deford will be the focus of a panel presentation on Tuesday, February 28, 6–7:30 p.m. at the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust, 57 Gravelly Brook Road, Kennebunkport. The event is sponsored by the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust (KCT), Maine Forest Service, Maine Board of Pesticides Control and University of Maine Cooperative Extension. The browntail moth, a destructive, invasive insect, can defoliate a tree just as buds

are opening in the spring. The moth’s microscopic hairs also can cause rash and respiratory problems in humans. Panel members include Amanda Couture, Board of Pesticides Control; Kyle Rosenberg, arborist; Frank Wertheim, UMaine Extension educator; and representatives from KCT and the medical community. Naval Prison: A Brief History at STAR Theatre KITTERY The prison, on Seavey Island, has been a source of myth and lore since it opened in 1908. Though now vacant, it still fascinates tourists and residents alike. The dearth of information about the prison led local writer Katy Kramer on a decade-long quest. This presentation, taking place on March 1 at 7 p.m.at Kittery's STAR Theatre, is the result of that research and traces the history of the iconic building

from its earliest days to present. Freelancing and teaching college composition, Kramer has written features for magazines, university publications,

~ News ~ Mail-It Unlimited Celebrates 28 Years by Giving Back KENNEBUNK On March 3, Bill Gallant will celebrate 28 years since his business, Mail-It Unlimited, first opened its doors. And once again, Gallant will use that anniversary celebration as a way to give back to the community. For the tenth year in a row, Gallant will be hosting a food drive to benefit Community Outreach Services, as well as the Animal Welfare Society. His drives bring in thousands of pounds of food each year for both organizations. This year, the drive kicked off mid-February with the final drive date on March 3. This year Gallant has set his largest goal: 10,000 pounds of people and pet food, plus personal care items (shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.). As an authorized UPS shipping location (one of the top 100 independently owned in the U.S., in fact), there will also be a

UPS flame truck in front of the store waiting to be filled with donations. To help Gallant reach his goal – and to stop in and meet Allie, people-greeter extraordinaire – bring your non-perishable people or dog food donation to Mail-It Unlimited, 45 Portland Road in Shopper’s Village, by March 3. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Hackmatack Playhouse Auditioning for Season BERWICK For the aging actor, Crystal Lisbon has a message: Hackmatack will be auditioning this spring for summer shows that feature numerous characters clearly beyond their 20s. “This season we will be in need of more actors over 30 than we have in the past, said Lisbon. “All of our four shows offer a lot of great parts for actors who aren't college age. Two of the season’s shows, “Steel Magnolias, and “The Fantasticks, are especially rich with older parts. In addition, Hackmatack is looking for older actors for “She Loves Me, as well as “Buddy, the Buddy Holly story. For “Buddy, Hackmatack will also be looking for a special breed of actor, those who can play instruments. “We are in need of musicians and actors for Buddy, which isn't something we're normally on the hunt for, noted Lisbon. “Often it's about actors and dancers or singers and actors, but for this particular show we need people who are musicians, actors, and singers. It makes for a very specific need. Auditions for “She Loves Me and “The Fantasticks will run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday March 4, with call backs that day or the next day. For “Steel Magnolias, Hackmatack’s third show of the season, auditions will be 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 1 with call backs right after auditions. Appointments for auditions, which will be held at

the South Berwick Community Center on Norton Street. Actors who want to be in “Buddy are asked to submit short videos with footage of the actor performing a song from the show. There are also some actingonly roles in the show. Call backs for “Buddy will be March 5. Lisbon likes each of this summer’s shows for what they bring to the stage and audiences. For instance, “She Loves Me, the basis for the film “You've Got Mail, is a lovely show just coming off of a 2016 Broadway revival, she said. “It does not have much name recognition outside theater circles, but once audiences see it, they will fall in love with it. This will run June 16 through July 1. The thrill of Buddy, the

Buddy Holly story, which will run July 5 through 22, is that Hackmatack has never taken on this kind of huge musical show. Lisbon sees “Steel Magnolias, which was also a film and will run July 26 to August 12, as a good balance for the male-oriented “Buddy. Finally, Hackmatack’s 45th anniversary season will close August 16 through September 2 with the “The Fantasticks, a musical done by Hackmatack when it opened in 1972 and one that is often requested by audiences. Actors looking for information on auditions and characters can go to hackmatack.org for descriptions of characters. For audition appointments, email mikeguptill@hotmail.com.

Scam: Pretending to be Grandchild and in Trouble NATIONWIDE An increasing number of calls to the Aging Committee's Fraud Hotline reporting of a persistent phone scam that targets grandparents. Through this so-called “Grandparent Scam, of which there are multiple variations, scammers typically call an older adult pretending to be a family member, often a grandchild. The con artist claims to be in urgent need of money to cover medical care or a legal problem, such as for bail or legal services following a supposed arrest. In another version of the scam, instead of the “grandchild making the phone call, the criminal pretends to be an arresting police officer, a lawyer, or a doctor. It is also common for con artists impersonating victims’ grandchildren to talk briefly with the victims and then hand the phone over to an accomplice impersonating an authority figure. This gives the scammers’ stories more credibility and reduces the chance that the victim will recognize that the voice on the phone does not belong to See SCAM page 12...

Health & Fitness Six Ways A Great Smile Can Change Your Life Today is the day. Your suit has been dry cleaned, your pants have that perfect crease and your tie has just the right splash of color to get noticed but not overpower the rest of your ensemble. One last glance in the mirror to check your hair, a final swipe of polish on your shoes and you are ready to go. Today is the day you nail the job interview. One more thing though. Have you checked your smile? That perfect smile might just be the key to you landing the job and changing your life forever. “A smile plays a critical role in how we feel about our-

selves and how others see us, says Dr. Leslie Pitner, an orthodontist and author of “Improve Your Smile, Transform Your Life: A Life-Changing Guide to Orthodontics for Adults. Pitner says adults whose teeth – and consequently their smile – could benefit from braces often don’t think about that option. Even when they do, they are discouraged from following through because of dubious information that they have come to regard as fact. A good smile, however, may be more important than most realize. It could be life-changing in fact. Here are six reasons why:

• Smiling can have an impact on numerous aspects of a person’s life, including their mood. Smiling activates the release of neuropeptides in our brains that work toward fighting off stress.

• People who have crooked teeth tend to hide their smiles, making them less approachable and seemingly less friendly. The benefits of having a friendly personality, and more friends, are numerous. • Research has shown that when a person smiles, he or she seems more attractive to others.

Unclaimed Cash for Mainers Available STATEWIDE The Office of the State Treasurer has received more than $11 million in the form of unclaimed property in the past year, and Mainers are being urged to check whether any of that cash belongs to them. “Unclaimed property” is

money owed to Maine people by third parties, such as former employers, banks or utility companies. Organizations are required to give unclaimed property to the State Treasurer after a specified period of time, after which the owner of the unclaimed property can retrieve it from the state.

“I appreciate Treasurer Terry Hayes’s efforts to make Mainers aware of this issue, and I am happy to pass it along,” said Sen. Dawn Hill, D-York. “It is important that this property ends up in the right hands.” Even if you have done everything right, you could have unclaimed property. It could be from a forgotten account, an overpaid bill or uncollected wages. This money could be unclaimed as a result of a change in name, addresses or bank account. You can search the Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property List, by logging on to https://maine.unclaimedproperty.com/property/ search. If you find your name, or the name of your current or past businesses on the list, you can claim the property immediately online — for free.

You can also search your friends and family and let them know about unclaimed properties that may belong to them. To find out if you are owed money in other states missingmoney.

and all the warning consumers hear, cyber criminals still achieve success and seem more brazen than ever. “Sometimes it can feel like the cyber criminals are working harder than the people who are supposed to be protecting our information,” says Gary S. Miliefsky, CEO of SnoopWall, a company that specializes in cyber security. But when consumers and businesses are vigilant, he says, they can foil those cyber criminals despite all their scheming. To that end, Miliefsky says some cyber security trends and factors worth knowing about for the rest of 2017 and beyond include: • Serious breaches still take too long to discover. As unsettling as it is to think about, Miliefsky says, the truth is that there’s generally a long lag time between when a breach happens and when it’s discovered. The average is 280 days, which means if cyber criminals hack your system today, it could be about nine months before anyone realizes there’s a problem. • Employees will continue to be critical to protection. For just about any organization, employees are the first line of defense – and the weakest link. Typically, when a breach happens behind a firewall it’s because someone was tricked into clicking on a link they shouldn’t have. Employees need to be educated, Miliefsky says. • Cyber insurance is hot and growing hotter. A breach can prove costly to companies, which is why cyber insurance is a growing field, Miliefsky says. Just as homeowner’s insurance doesn’t keep your house from catching fire, though, cyber insurance doesn’t guard against a breach. But a policy can help the company that’s hit by a breach regain its financial footing. • Companies may begin to realize the importance of See TRENDS page 15...

BUSINESS & FINANCE Maine Ranks among Most Affordable States for Auto and Homeowners Insurance STATEWIDE Maine’s Insurance Superintendent announced that Maine continues to be among

the top states in the nation for most affordable homeowners and personal auto insurance rates.

...TRENDS from page 14 managing their intranet. Most breaches happen behind firewalls. “You’ll need more than antivirus to stop the bad guys,” Miliefsky says. This includes anti-phishing tools, network access control (NAC), zeroday malware quarantining and other next-generation approaches focusing on the root cause of how you get breached. Without a NAC solution, you won’t be able to tell who is on your network, including if the cleaners are plugging in a laptop at midnight or if a consultant is on the wrong VLAN, like human resources or payroll where you don’t want them to have access, he says. In addition, you should find and fix all your common vulnerabilities and exposures. You can learn more about them at the National Vulnerability Database at nvd.nist.gov or cve.mitre. org. “By finding and fixing your holes, you’ll have a stronger, less exploitable infrastructure,” Miliefsky says. • The best protection for consumers is still self protection. Consumers can’t always count on how well their bank or their favorite retailer handles cyber security. But anyone can take steps to be safer, Miliefsky says. Change passwords frequently. Put a sticker over your laptop’s webcam when

you’re not using it. Protect your smartphone by turning off WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC and GPS except when you need them. Delete cookies and your browsing history regularly. When consumers learn the importance of mobiledevice “hygiene,” both they and the places they work are at less risk of suffering a data breach or loss. Gary S. Miliefsky is the CEO of SnoopWall, Inc. (www. snoopwall.com) and a co-inventor of the company’s innovative breach prevention technologies. He is a cyber-security expert and a frequent invited guest on national and international media commenting on mobile privacy, cyber security, cyber crime and cyber terrorism, also covered in both Forbes and Fortune Magazines. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by stock articles.

For the fourth year in a row, Maine ranks 3rd for lowest average auto insurance premiums, nationally, and for the third year in a row, the State ranks 10th for lowest average homeowners premiums nationally, according to recently released reports by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). Maine continues to have the lowest average homeowners premiums in New England. The NAIC’s Auto Insurance Database Report provides the average costs associated with personal automobile in-

surance and includes state-bystate auto insurance data and analysis for insurance regulators, consumers, and lawmakers. The types of auto insurance coverage included in the report are bodily injury and property damage liability, uninsured and underinsured motorist, medical payment, collision, and comprehensive. The NAIC’s Homeowners Insurance Report provides data on market distribution and average cost by policy form and amount of insurance. Data is collected from insurance sta-

tistical agents or reported directly to the NAIC and includes national and state-specific premium and exposure information for homeowners policies, as well as non-commercial dwelling fire insurance policies. According to the Insurance Research Council, Maine also continues to have one of the lowest percentages of uninsured motorists, at 4.7%. More information is available from the NAIC at www.naic.org, 1-800-300-5000 or insurance.pfr@maine.gov.

Museum Mourns the Passing of Painter Dahlov Ipcar OGUNQUIT Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA) mourns the recent passing of renowned painter and illustrator Dahlov Ipcar. The museum had been looking forward to welcoming the artist at the opening of its 64th exhibition season with an installation of her work. Dahlov Ipcar was 99. “Dahlov brought such brilliant color to the lives of so many. She is beloved in Maine and her passing is deeply felt, said Michael Mansfield, Executive Director and Chief Curator of OMAA. “We are honored now to be mounting an important exhibition of her early work in the coming season. What better way to celebrate the life and career of this extraordinary woman than by revisiting her premiere exhibition, which will bring much deserved attention to her achievements in painting and sculpture. We’ll also continue to share her illustrated books with

young audiences through public readings and to further champion her work in the museum’s permanent collection. Curator Andres Verzosa, former Interim Executive Director of OMAA, had been working closely with Ms. Ipcar since this summer to realize the museum's upcoming exhibition which opens May 1. Verzosa stated, “I have been so fortunate to have spent time with Dahlov developing and planning Dahlov Ipcar: Creative Growth for this spring at OMAA. She is truly a master, and I feel so lucky to have had the entree of meeting her and getting to know her. I was first introduced to Dahlov's art simultaneous to that of one of Maine’s other most celebrated animalier, Bernard Langlais in the mid 1980’s. Over the ensuing years I would see Dahlov at her various art openings and book signings. It was not until my recent visits to her Robinhood Cove home and studio in Georgetown this

past summer and winter that I would get to know her and her art more intimately. It was especially poignant speaking with her in the studio surrounded by her work. OMAA’s opening installation this season will revisit Dahlov’s first solo exhibition which took place at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1939. had a best buddy. They were often seen together eating from dumpsters, drinking from dirty puddles, and dining on decaying seagulls. Most neighbors either ignored them or chased them away, considering them a nuisance, unworthy of help or kindness. Luckily, a kind person tried over time to help them. One awful day, she saw Grover standing guard beside his buddy, who lay there dead. Was he hit by a car? Poisoned? We don’t know. It was then that she redoubled her efforts to bring him to safety at Safe Haven. This buff and white hobo was so skinny and covered with bumps and bruises, we called him Mr. Bumpy. Soon we renamed him Grover and he settled into the shelter’s kitchen. But Grover is now having

serious health issues. The radioiodine therapy for his thyroid disease costs about $1,400. Last night’s Beachmere donation will go toward our beloved Grover’s care. But we still need to raise the rest of the money. If you want to help, please donate at our website or mail a check to Safe Haven Humane Society in Wells.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady: I have had Windows 10 loaded on to my Windows 8.1 Toshiba laptop for several months. Since going to Windows 10, I have not been able to send or receive mail in Windows Mail. The people in the store could not load it on, either. A computer tech just told us that Windows Mail in Windows 10 is "a piece of junk" and that we should just wait for the update to arrive. I like the Windows Mail format and have used it for years. So, I am wondering if you have any suggestions about what I might do. Love your articles and your help. Stay warm! Sincerely, Nancy Dear Nancy, I don't know if the Mail app that comes with Windows 10 is junk, but it does not have

many of the features that we have come to expect from our email programs. I am not sure if this is because Microsoft assumes we all get our email online now, or if they are trying to get you to purchase Microsoft Outlook which is a full-featured email program. Either way, waiting for an update probably won't bring a solution to your problem. I would suggest that you try a different email program. There are several available that have a similar format to the Windows Mail that you are used to using. I usually suggest Mozilla Thunderbird at: www. mozilla. org/en-US/thunderbird/. If you search my question and answer database at: askthecomputerlady. com/questions/ for Thunderbird, you will find quite a few articles about it. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, How do I get a program to open when starting up, i.e., I want Outlook to open automatically when I boot up the computer. Thanks, John Dear John, If you want an app or program to automatically start when you boot up your computer, all you have to do is place a shortcut to that app or program in the Windows 10 startup folder. The trick is finding that startup folder. The rest is pretty easy. The startup folder is usually located in your user folder, but it is buried pretty deep. If you wanted to locate it using Windows Explorer, you would need to follow the following path: C: \ Users\USERNAME\AppData\ Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\ StartMenu\Programs\Startup. In that path, you would replace USERNAME with whatever your user name is. An easier way to open the startup folder is to use some keyboard shortcuts. Here is how: 1. On your keyboard, press the windows logo key and the letter R. This will open the "Run" dialog box. 2. In the Run dialog box, type the following shell:startup. 3. Press the "Enter" key on your keyboard to open the startup folder. 4. Now that you have the startup folder open, you need to get a shortcut for Outlook

(or whatever program you want to automatically start) in that folder. The next few steps will do that for you. 5. Press the windows logo key on your keyboard and type Outlook (or whatever program you are looking for) 6. A link to your program will appear in the search results at the top of the start menu. Right-click on the link, and click on "Open File Location". 7. You now have one explorer window open with the startup items, and another open with the shortcut to Outlook. Using your right-mouse button, drag the Outlook shortcut to the startup window. 8. When you release the right mouse button, a context menu will appear. Click "Copy Here" to create a copy of that shortcut in the startup menu. 9. Close both Explorer windows. Now, when you start your computer, the program you just placed in the startup folder will automatically open. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I receive almost weekly calls from some company that tells me that my computer is sending all kinds of information from windows out to the internet and they represent the Windows company and need to access my computer in order to fix the problem. This has been going on for a couple of years. I view this as a fraud and never allow them to access

my computer and have repeatedly asked them to discontinue the calls. This never happens. Am I mistaken or is this real? If it is fraudulent how can I stop the calls? Thanks for your helpful responses to other problems. Hope you can help, Paul L in Utah Dear Paul, I get these calls too. You are right to hang up on them, it is nothing more than a scam. Microsoft will never call you to tell you that your computer is having problems. Often, the scammers will have you sit at your computer and bring up a screen with a long identification number that they will then read to you (it is supposed to be proof that they are getting the signal from your computer) the thing is, this number that they have you display on your screen is THE SAME ON EVERY WINDOWS COMPUTER! They try to tell you that it is a unique identification number for your computer, but it is not. Asking them to stop calling you will do no good. They are not legitimate, law abiding companies. The only way to get them to stop calling you is to change to an unlisted telephone number. Elizabeth Interested in learning more?
