BA Team Wins Maine State VEX Championship, Qualifies for Worlds

Left to right: Matt DesRochers, Zach Miller, and Ian Miller, standing proudly with their winning robot and the two trophies, the Programming Skills Award and the Tournament Champion Award.

SOUTH BERWICK The Berwick Academy Robotics team has made unbelievable strides in just a few short years. That fact became most evident this past weekend when they took home the first place title in the Maine State VEX “Nothing But Net Championship in Hampden. The team earned the Runner-Up title in the Southern Maine VEX Tournament in November, which qualified them for the state competition. Competing against over 40 other teams, the Berwick group held steady for 81 qualifying

rounds and 9 matches, remaining undefeated until the final round, where they took 2 out of 3 matches for the tournament win. The win qualified the team to move on to the VEX World Championship in Kentucky this April. During the match, the team also won the Programming Skills challenge, which is the same as the main competition but involves no driver input. The robot is pre-programmed to complete its task, and the Berwick team scored 120 points in the competition. In addition to their championship win, Berwick

was also awarded the “Amaze Award, a judge’s award which is described as follows: The “Amaze Award is presented to a team that has built a competition robot that clearly demonstrates overall quality. A solid mechanical design along with demonstrated robot programming, robustness, strong performance and consistency are key attributes assessed for this award. The organization also patrols the border between Nepal and India and rescues victims from across the border, then brings them back to give them food, shelter and vocational training. Winter Home of Maine Atlantic Puffins Uncovered MAINE New findings recently announced by the National Audubon Society at the Pacific Seabird Group convention in Oahu, Hawaii reveal the first-ever mapped winter grounds of the Maine-breeding Atlantic Puffin, a species of conservation concern. Long a mystery, geolocation data helped discover surprising winter pathways and migration timing for where puffins spend much of their year when they are not at their nesting islands. “Potential threats of commercial fishing, offshore wind,

and climate change have prompted the need for information on the non-breeding movements and wintering locations of seabirds that nest in the Gulf of Maine, said Dr. Stephen Kress, Director

of the Audubon Seabird Restoration Program. “The discovery that Maine’s puffins winter over submerged Atlantic canyons and sea mountains provides another reason to protect these areas, and better understand what needs to be done to reverse population declines. Once common along Maine’s coast, Atlantic Puffins nearly disappeared there due to hunting and egg collecting in the 1800’s. Since 1973, Audubon’s Seabird Restoration Program, pioneered by Kress, has restored breeding Atlantic Puffins and

other seabirds to islands off the coast of Maine. Today, the program has reestablished more than 1,000 puffin pairs to three crucial islands. Until recently, little was known about the movements and distribution of Maine’s Atlantic Puffins outside of the breeding season in May to August. In 2011, Audubon researchers recovered geolocators from two puffins tagged at Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge back in 2009. These two tracking devices sugSee PUFFINS page 17...

Food Drive: Mail-It Unlimited Celebrates 27 Years by Giving Back KENNEBUNK – Once again this year, MailIt Unlimited owner Bill Gallant will celebrate his business’s anniversary by helping others. It’s been 27 years since Mail-It Unlimited first opened its doors. To celebrate that longevity, beginning Feb. 27 and ending March 11, Gallant will be hosting a food drive – his ninth in a row – to benefit Community Outreach Services, as well as the Animal Welfare Society. This year’s goal is 10,000 pounds of people and pet food. Gallant once again planned the food drive with the help of Allie, a gentle southern-

born Golden Retriever rescue pup who for the last six years has served as the official “peoplegreeter at Mail-It. As an authorized UPS shipping location, there will also be a UPS flame truck in front of the store for two weeks, waiting to be filled with donations. To help Gallant reach his goal and to meet Allie, bring your non-perishable people or dog food donation to Mail-It Unlimited, 45 Portland Road in Shopper’s Village, by Friday, March 11. For more information on Mail-It Unlimited, check out www.shopkennebunk.com, or call 207-985-2087.

Not necessarily the Maine State Champs, nor the worlds, but I knew that we would progress to a further and greater point than we have ever done before. It was my personal goal, for our team, all of us.” Zach also commented, “We thought we were going to do well, but we did not think that we were going to be able to win everything. Local Author Joseph Hardy will discuss his book History of a Maine “Little River on Thursday, March 3, from noon-1 p.m. Many New England communities have a “Little River.Today, they may seem insignificant, but during earlier centuries free flowing streams provided innumerable sites for industry, especially sawmills, grist mills, fulling mills and carding mills. This book is about one such Little River, situated in Wells, Maine. It presents the changing landscape during the time of the last continental glacier, and the ensuing cultures of the native inhabitants. The author then describes the period of European settlement in the 17th century, and the agricultural lifestyle dominant during the 18th and 19th centuries. This program. is free and wheelchair accessible.

Kennebunk Free Library Children’s Room Takes Water Damage – Closed Upcoming A hot water valve in the KFL Children’s Room burst earlier this week causing the need to close this area off to the public. Because materials and furnishings were exposed to this hot moisture they’ll need to be thoroughly inspected and cleaned. In keeping with the positive spirit of KFL, the Library’s staff sees this as an opportunity to address related repair needs and library-wide projects. We are working closely with contractors and vendors to have the Children’s Room open back up in three to four weeks. In the meantime patrons still have access to the rest of the building and can also use their KFL card at Wells Public Library.

~ News ~ Marshwood HS Teacher Speaks about “We the People Program SOUTH BERWICK Matt Sanzone, teacher of “We the People at Marshwood High School, will speak about the program at Eliot Historical Society's March 7th meeting. Started in 1987, the “We the People Program has reached tens of thousands students throughout our nation. Each year, about 1,200 high school students from all fifty states participate in the highly prestigious academic competition on the U.S. Constitution. Now in its 29th year, the annual three-day competition is the culminating activity of “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution, the most extensive civic education program of its kind in the country. The program provides students with an understanding of

the fundamental values and principles of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The competition involves entire classes making presentations and answering questions on Constitutional topics before a panel of judges requited from across the country. Constitutional scholars, lawyers, and government leaders, acting as congressional committee members will judge the students' performances. Marshwood High School has represented Maine at eight of the past nine national competitions and has won two national awards during that time. All are invited to this free meeting, held at the John F. Hill Grange, Eliot, at 7 p.m. For more information, call 207-439-2404. Photo to right: Marshwood’s “We the People Team.

Artist of the Month: Randie Rouser Olofson KITTERY Randie Rouser Olofson, Artist of the Month for March at Just Us Chickens Gallery, is a colorist who creates portraits of animals, figures and landscapes with lavish brush strokes and rich color. “As an animal lover, I find beauty in both mighty mutts as well as blue-blooded thoroughbreds. I love dogs and all their funny characteristics, short or long legs, one ear up and one down, furry or sleek, young or old. A dog’s personality comes through the texture of their fur, the tilt of the head, the way they sit or lay and especially in their eyes. Dogs don’t concern themselves about whether they look fat or have wrinkles, making it all the more fun to paint them honestly. I have been privileged to meet and photograph most of the dogs I paint. Others sadly are memorial portraits but never the less are just as important to their families as the tail wagging ones

who come to my studio in Kittery. Randie’s whimsical paintings strive to capture the dog’s personality. Her dramatic backgrounds depict the dog’s home, family, or are reminiscent of English sporting pictures with rollings hills, leafy trees and wide blue skies. The artist, a resident of New Hampshire, has a BA in Fine Arts and has traveled and painted all over the world. Randie’s work may be found in many private and corporate collections. Opening reception Friday March 4 from 4-7 p.m., 156A State Road, Kittery; 207-4394209.

Health & Fitness Talk About Rx: Aging Parents at Potential Risk for Medication Misuse

ment is a difficult subject to broach as it is a very personal topic. Often times, seniors have been managing this aspect of their life on their own for many years and may not be fully aware of potential pitfalls. “If families see any signs that their senior loved one may be having difficulties – such as unintended weight loss or full medicine bottles – we encourage them to help their senior loved one, serving as a second set of eyes and ears, or ask for help, said Howard Schultz, franchise owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office in Kennebunk. Family caregivers can accompany their senior to the doctor, use pill boxes and medication trackers, or look into pharmacies like Simple MedsSM that package medications and vitamins in single-dose packs. Having the right medication

management plan can help seniors stay independent in their homes and avoid adverse drug reactions. “Discussing medication regimens with a loved one increases their self-confidence to correctly take their prescriptions, over-the-counter medications and vitamins, said Dr. Jane Potter, geriatrician and director of the Home Instead Center for Successful Aging at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. “This is increasingly important both as an individual ages and the number of medications they take increases. Taking more medications puts seniors at higher risk for a medical emergency from incorrect dosing or adverse medication interactions. To obtain the solutions guide, or to view other program resources and tips, visit www.LetsTalkAboutRx.com.

Health & Fitness Maine Resident Develops Tooth Fairy App SACO “Brushing with the Tooth Fairy app brings joy to learning is the promotional theme of a dental app for children to help parents promote proper brushing technique and develop good oral health habits for their children. The app is available on both iOS and Android devices. Created by Saco resident and Registered Dental Hygienist Aurelija Asssennato, who plays the tooth fairy herself, has made it her personal mission to make a child’s first dental visit a positive experience. She wants them to be proud as they smile and say “no cavities! Sadly, too many children do not brush properly

How To Maintain Mental Focus The technological advancements made in the 21st century have undoubtedly made life easier in many ways, but this golden age of gadgets has not come without some negative side effects. Thanks to the near-constant availability of the Internet and devices like smartphones and tablets, many men and women find it difficult to maintain their focus throughout the day. But while such distractions are never too far away, there are some ways to stay focused and productive. • Get more exercise. Studies have shown that exercise and improved mental focus are linked. In a 2013 analysis of 19 studies involving more than 500 children, teenagers and young adults, researchers found that exercise sessions between 10 and 40 minutes immediately boosted concentration and mental focus. That improvement might be a result of exercise increasing blood flow to the brain. Men and women who find themselves struggling to focus at work after lunchtime may benefit from incorporating some exercise, whether it’s a brief walk or a more strenuous workout, into their midday routines. • Perform breathing exercises. Nervousness is an oft-overlooked cause of loss of focus. When nervous, breath can become shallow and restricted, which can have a negative impact on the flow of oxygen to your brain, making it more difficult to concenSee FOCUS page 15...

requiring further treatments at a young age. With the tooth fairy app, good habits will be taught in a way that is fun for children and keeps them engaged for the somewhat mundane task of tooth brushing. Brushing with the Tooth Fairy app targets children 4+ and educates on teeth brushing and healthy oral habits. We all know that healthy teeth play an important role in our lives. Brushing with the Tooth Fairy app is interactive and it has a real person, a tooth fairy, that actually interacts with children and teaches them to brush. The tooth fairy demonstrates and explains the brushing sequence so the child can easily follow along and imitate her. It boosts dexterity and teaches children how to learn through following directions. It also has a flexible reminder feature for morning and night time brushing.

Brushing with the Tooth Fairy is now available for 0.99$ in the US and is priced accord-

ingly in other regions. The app is available worldwide and in Spanish in the near future. Please visit www.facebook. com/BrushingwiththeTooth-

Our parents and grandparents worked hard their entire lives and saved for retirement. Unfortunately, there are criminals who are targeting them and who want to rob them of their hard-earned savings. The size and scope of this problem are immense. According to the Government Accountability Office, the top federal watchdog agency, America’s seniors lose a staggering $2.9 billion each year to an ever-growing array of financial exploitation schemes and scams. Senator Susan M. Collins represents the state with the oldest median age. The Senator is Chairman of the Senate Aging Committee, protecting seniors against financial exploitation and scams is one of my highest priorities. Due to the epidemic of fraud perpetrated against seniors and the extent to which victims are unsure of where they

should turn for help, the Aging Committee has just published a comprehensive guide on scams titled, “Fighting Fraud: U.S. Senate Aging Committee Identifies Top 10 Scams Targeting Our Nation’s Seniors. This guide is intended to raise awareness among seniors and their families of the top 10 frauds aimed at older Americans. It also provides tips on ways to avoid scams and lists important consumer protection agencies. In order to help seniors report fraud and connect them to the proper resources, the Aging Committee maintains a toll-free Fraud Hotline (1-855-303-9470). The Hotline is staffed by experienced fraud investigators, who receive calls from every state in the nation, but especially from Maine. The Hotline has proven to be an invaluable resource for seniors and has had considerable success in the fight against fraud. For instance, the Hotline was recently contacted by a woman from Iowa who sent nearly $4,000 to criminals before realizing that she had been scammed. The Senator's staff promptly called the bank and was able to stop the money from being sent overseas. Time is of the essence in stopping a scam once it is underway. If that money had already been wired, getting it back would have been extremely difficult, if not impossible. In another example, the Hotline received a call from a senior in Florida whose husband was deceived by a scam in which he sent $1,900 to con artists pretending to be IRS agents demanding immediate payment of so-called back taxes and penalties. This was reported this to the Treasury Department, and its agents have located 155 other victims and identified two suspects. The number one complaint reported to the Fraud Hotline last year was the IRS imposter scam, like the one that cost the Florida couple $1,900. Victims are threatened with retaliation, such as home foreclosure and even arrest. With Tax Day 2016 approaching, all Americans should be on guard against this particular scam. In fact, my own mother recently received three such calls in one week. These scam calls most often involve a disguised, or See GUIDE page 15...

Health & Fitness ...GUIDE from page 14 “spoofed, caller ID to make the victim believe the call is coming from the Washington, D.C., “202 area code, where the IRS is headquartered. It is important to know that the IRS will always mail a bill before trying to call. Anyone receiving a call from someone claiming to be from the IRS can call the Treasury Department at 1-800-366-4484, or the Aging Committee Fraud Hotline, and report it to their local police. Sweepstakes scams, where victims are told they must pay a fee to collect fictitious winnings, was second on the list. The third most-common complaint of 2015 was robocalls or unwanted phone calls. A Committee hearing examined how scammers’ use of this new technology has rendered the national Do-Not-Call registry ineffective in many cases. Computer tech support schemes ranked fourth. Fraudsters typically claim to represent a well-known technology company and convince victims to provide them with access to their computers by telling them that their computer has been infected by a virus that must be fixed. Identity theft, the fifth most common fraud, involves the theft of a wallet or mail, online impersonation, or other illegal efforts to obtain a person’s personal identifiable information. Grandparent scams, elder financial abuse by caregivers, grant scams, romance scams, and home improvement scams rounded out the top 10 most common scams perpetrated against seniors. While tangible progress has been made in countering scams, it is evident that more work remains to be done, and new scams are cropping up all the time. Recently, the Senator chaired a hearing where we heard the tragic story of a 77-year-old Maine man, a retired pastor, who was tricked by a con artist into unwittingly smuggling drugs between South America and Europe. Although he was not aware of the contents of the packages he was given, he was caught by customs officials and is now serving six years in a Spanish prison. He is just one of more than 30 Americans imprisoned overseas after being deceived into smuggling drugs. The Aging Committee remains focused on scams

Health & Fitness Decrease Mucus Production And Subsequent Sore Throats

When allergies, colds or the flu strike, the result-

ing symptoms can be unpleasant. Watery eyes, sneezing,

aches, pains, and lethargy are common. Two additional symptoms common to respiratory illnesses include excess mucus production and sore throat. Mucus is a vital component of bodily health. The American Academy of Otolaryngology says glands in the nose and throat continually produce thin mucus to moisten and clean respiratory passageways. viruses or bacteria irritate parts of the nose and throat, excess mucus may be produced as the immune system attempts to retaliate. This mucus may thicken and become more acidic. Extra mucus can produce its own side effects, including further irritation. According to New YorkPresbyterian Hospital, in many cases, excess mucus production can lead to post-nasal drip and subsequent sore throats. People often mistake postnasal drip and related sore throat as separate medical conditions. But each can be traced to whichever illness or irritant (such as dry air or chemical exposure) is triggering the body’s mucus response. Reducing the amount of mucus pooling in the back of the throat can help a person feel better more quickly and can be used in conjunction with medical advice. • Limit foods that may increase mucus production. Dairy products, wheat, soy, bananas, sugar, and preservatives may contribute to mucus production, according to The University of Maryland Medical Center. • Drink peppermint or regular mint tea. The natural menthol in these herbs can help thin mucus and loosen it up for more productive coughs. • Increase consumption of mucus-fighting foods and beverages. Mustard, lemon, garlic, and anti-inflammatory oils found in many nuts may help reduce swelling in the throat and nose and tame mucus pro-

Simple nasal saline rinses or gargling with salt water can alleviate irritation and help reduce some of the mucus, too. Remember to use cooled-down boiled tap water or distilled, sterile water for nasal rinses to prevent the chance of water contamination, which can lead to serious illness. • Consider medication. When natural remedies are exhausted, prescription or overthe counter products may provide relief. Decongestants can dry up nasal secretions, while antibiotics may be needed if an infection is bacterial in nature. One of the best ways to improve focus during the day is to make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night. Sleep deprivation produces a host of negative consequences, not the least of which is its impact on cognitive functioning. Research has shown that sleep deprivation compromises alertness and concentration, making it more difficult to focus at work and tackle tasks that require deep analysis and thought. In addition, a survey from the National Sleep Foundation found that sleep-deprived men and women are less likely to exercise and eat healthy diets, each of which can boost mental acuity. Focusing in today’s atmosphere of constant distractions can be difficult, but men and women can overcome diversions by employing a handful of successful strategies aimed at improving concentration. ...PUFFINS from page 1 gested a northward journey to the Gulf of St. Lawrence—a region known for abundant forage fish, a key food source-- after the nesting season, before a southward movement ranging from the Labrador Sea to Bermuda in winter months. This was the first hint of puffins’ actual winter homes. “Puffins are perfectly at home at sea. A surprise to many is that adult puffins spend about eight months resting and sleeping on the waves,” said Kress. “They can drink salt water and eat under waves too. Young puffins are even more ocean going, spending at least the first two years of life on the water without ever stepping foot onto land.”

Studies continued with improved, smaller geolocation devices to rule out speculations that earlier models affected puffins’ breeding behavior and migration routes. Since 2010, 38 advanced geolocators were attached by Audubon researchers to leg bands on puffins from Matinicus Rock and Seal Island National Wildlife Refuge. By March 2015, 19 of these trackers were recovered from returning puffins. Data showed the birds travelled a northward distance in August to the western Gulf of St. Lawrence. The data also showed that as days shortened the puffins left the Gulf of St. Lawrence and headed south to the U.S. Conti-

nental Shelf-- well offshore from New York and New Jersey where they spent the rest of the winter on water—before arriving back to Maine’s islands by early April. The areas most frequented by tagged puffins during the winter months are about 200 miles southeast of Cape Cod— including an area known as New England’s “coral canyons and seamounts.” This vast, largely unexplored area includes canyons deeper than the Grand Canyon, along with submerged seamounts noted for colorful corals, some as large as small trees. Puffins are likely attracted to the region because of the productive upwelling that offers

abundant food-- the same conditions that favor whales, porpoise, tuna, sailfish and other seabirds. Cashes Ledge, another underwater mountain range inside the Gulf of Maine, was also found to be popular with tracked puffins, as it is for whales and other sealife. Together, these locations have been proposed for designation as the first Atlantic marine national monument in the United States. Kress hopes to recover more geolocators over the next year to help inform an international conservation plan. For more information and updates about Audubon’s ongoing efforts to help Atlantic Puffins, visit

I have two beautiful children, a husband, I work two jobs and I am enrolled full time at the University of Southern Maine. The grant would be such a gift, as it would help with the gas, tolls and the costs of books this spring semester.” Cheryl Drisko of Springvale lost her job when the company she worked for moved its offices to New York. She decided to switch gears entirely and enrolled in the YCCC culinary arts associates degree, with the goal of providing nutritional support and cooking for the elderly. The scholarship will allow her to purchase her own tools, which she is borrowing now. The Rotary Club Continuing Education scholarships are given out annually. Sargent said she hopes the trend in increased applications continues."The scholarship applications prove that there are many people who need just a little support to

We are pleased that we can help in some small way toward making a difference in people’s lives,” said York Rotary Club President Dr. Stephen Jendzejec. “Rotary’s motto is, ‘Service above self,’ and we take that charge very seriously. The job market has changed in such a way, individuals need to utilize all of their resources, and the biggest resource they have around them, is their family and those who are in their inner circle. You would be amazed at who those in your inner circle may know, and they are not afraid to speak up on your behalf.” Adult Education’s newest career building opportunity is the “Ready-to-Work” Certificate beginning on Wednesday, March 2, 6-8 p.m. at 89 Fletcher Street in Kennebunk. This 15 week program offers hands-on opportunities for people who want to build valuable job market skills such as writing resumes and filling out applications, fine tuning customer service and problem solving skills, learning to dress for the job you want, including preparing for the interview and valuable networking sessions. Come learn how to network and meet people who can help make connections. “A better trained workforce” says Crothers, “makes good economic sense and we are excited to be part of it all.” For more information, contact Adult Education of The Kennebunks and Arundel at 207-985-1116. or visit www. rsu21.net/adult-education.

The PATH Act – What it Means for You The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act of 2015 was passed by Congress and signed into law last week. The PATH Act extended, and even made permanent, numerous business and personal income tax incentives that had been allowed to expire at the end of 2014. This article provides a quick summary of some of the highlights of last week's legislation, as they relate to both individuals and business owners. The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act of 2015 was passed by Congress and signed into law last week. The PATH Act extended, and even made permanent, numerous business and personal income tax incentives that had been allowed to expire at the end of 2014. This article provides a quick summary of some of the highlights of last week's legislation, as they relate to both individuals and business owners. Charitable Donations from Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs): IRA owners who have reached age 70 1/2 have, in recent years, been allowed to make charitable cash donations directly out of their IRA's. These Qualified Charitable Deductions (QCDs) do not provide a tax deduction, but do count towards required minimum distribution (RMD) amounts, thereby allowing those who

are so inclined to reduce their income tax liability by turning all or a portion of their taxable RMD, into a tax-free QCD. The PATH Act permanently extends this provision, which is limited to $100,000 per taxpayer per year. Extension of Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses, and Enhanced American Opportunity Credit (AOTC): The new law extends, through 2016, the above-the-line deduction (up to $4,000) for qualified tuition and related expenses, for those whose adjusted gross income (AGI) does not exceed $65,000 (single), or $130,000 (married filing jointly).

ness energy property. The credit, of up to ten percent of the cost incurred for qualified energy improvements (up to a maximum of $500), is extended through 2016. If you are thinking of making any energy efficient improvements to your home, do so before the end of next year to take advantage of this tax break. Cost-Recovery Period for Qualified Leasehold Improvements: The PATH Act permanently extends the 15 year straight-line cost recovery period for qualified leasehold improvements, qualified restaurant property, and qualified retail improvement

property, thus avoiding having to use longer 27.5 or 39 year cost recovery lives. Extension and Modification of Section 179 Expensing Limitations: The new law permanently extends the expensing and phaseout limitation of $500,000 and $2,000,000, respectively. In addition to the extension, the current aforementioned limits will be indexed for inflation beginning in 2016. The new law also permanently extends the provisions that allow for expensing of computer software, qualified leasehold improvement, restaurant, and retail improvement property, as well as

allowing for expensing of air conditioning and heating (HVAC) units in 2016. Prior to enactment, HVAC units had not been eligible for expensing under Section 179. This article provides only a brief synopsis of the new tax legislation. Consult with your tax adviser regarding your specific situation. For other details about this legislation, contact us for more information. Submitted by Macpage Tax Service. For more information: www. macpage.com/tax or contact Ben Dailey at BD@macpage. com or 207-523-3328.

Extension of Option to Deduct State and Local Sales and Use Taxes: The option to claim an itemized deduction for state and local general sales tax, in lieu of state and local income taxes, was made permanent. This permanent extension provides a beneficial option for those individuals who pay little or no state income taxes. If you can benefit from this option and have been thinking of making a big-ticket purchase (such as a new car or boat), you may consider doing so prior to December 31st in order to earn a deduction on your 2016 Form 1040. Extension of Credit for NonBusiness Energy Property: The PATH Act extends the credit for purchasing non-busi-

How Sweet it is! Rossi’s Italian Bakery Relocates By Kevin Cox, Staff Contributor YORK The long awaited re-opening of Rossi's Italian Bakery at its new location took place on February 10. Owners Ted and Debbie Flanagan of Cape Neddick have been welcoming friends and customers they've met over the last three years to their new location at the Meadowbrook Plaza in York. Ted brought his thirty-eight years of baking experience, and Debbie her fifteen years, to the original Rossi's on Beach Street at Short Sands beach in York. The recent move to Route One gives them a convenient, hightraffic, year-round business. The new store is situated between the Nubble Light Salon and

Greenleaves restaurant: Unit #1, Meadowbrook Plaza, 647 Route 1, York. “We make the best everything said Debbie as she proudly displayed the cases loaded with fresh pastries and baked goods. People have been waiting for the bakery to open at its new location, where Rossi's will feature their favorites plus even more offerings. Debbie said the fan favorites include cannoli, lobster tails, pan pizza, rum cake and ricotta pies. Rossi's bakes one hundred different flavors of cupcakes. Another favorite, bocconcini, is a ricotta-filled cream puff dipped in chocolate. Wedding cakes have been a part of Rossi's menu from the beginning, but Ted and Debbie

2 Pounds of fresh green asparagus A pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar 4 cups of vegetable broth (like College Inn light) 1 tart green apple, such as Granny Smith The juice of half a large lemon 1/3 of a cup of whipping cream Pepper to taste Fresh grated nutmeg or ground nutmeg

Garnish: Âź cup of whipping cream 2 scallions

Directions: 1. Peel the lower third of the asparagus, and snap off the tough ends. Cut into 1-inch pieces. Barely cover with water and bring to a boil. Add a pinch of salt and sugar and cook for about 10 minutes until tender, strain asparagus but save the cooking water. 2. Puree the Asparagus with a tiny bit of cooking water and set aside. 3. Add enough vegetable broth to the cooking water so you have 6-1/2 cups of liquid in total. 4. Peel the apple. Using a melon-baller, scoop out pieces of apple and put them in a bowl of water and lemon juice so that they donÕt turn brown. If you do not have a melon scoop, cut your apple into 1-inch cubes. 5. Add the pureed asparagus and cream to the broth and season with salt and pepper to taste. You can use more

or less cream or broth depending on your desired consistency. 6. Whip up the soup a bit more with a hand blender before serving. Add the apple balls to the soup and warm up over a low Ăžre. 7- To garnish, whip the cream until stiff peaks form. And add a dollop to each portion. Cut one scallion into strips and the other into small rings. Use them for garnish for the bowls 8- Serve with pieces of a fresh cut crusty bread and a glass of white wine. Enjoy!

WEST KENNEBUNK PetSmart Adoption Weekend Animal Welfare Society's recent participation in PetSmart's National Adoption Weekend was a rousing success. All in all 14 cats/kittens, 20 dogs/puppies, and even one rabbit were adopted over the course of the weekend. Included among those was Tripp, who was born with a birth defect that left her with only three legs. Her new happy family was in line at 5:30 a.m. to ensure they were the first to adopt. Special thanks to PetSmart and PetSmart Charities for putting on the event and to Road Trip Home for providing many of the animals whom were transferred from Georgia. NORTH BERWICK Meet Sam, a young adult female Seal Point Siamese that came into ACAR as an abandon kitty. She is very sweet and gentle, most likely a much loved kitty at some point in her immediate past. How and why Sam became a stray isn't her fault and now all she is looking forward to is a new safe stable home with a loving family or single person who can love her again. Siamese are loyal, intelligent and dog like in their devotion to their chosen human(s). Most Siamese are great with children and other family pets, and Sam has excel in both these areas at the adoption center. Sam will be spayed the beginning of March and all her vaccinations will be up dated. If you are the family or single person that has always wanted a sweet, loving, devoted, and beautiful house cat to join your family, Sam would so like to meet you for an interview. Sam's only need is that she be an indoor only kitty for her

These animals are at our mercy so please help them! If you see a kitty in need, step up and provide food, water and shelter. Call a rescue or shelter for assistance. Meanwhile, Annabelle needs a safe, quiet foster home to give birth. We prefer the foster volunteer have kitty birthing experience, but we can provide a volunteer to offer advice and help when the time comes. We’d also prefer a foster home close

Their surprise visit truly touched our hearts. Our Cat Socializing Team is enjoying the rewards of seeing their time and attention spent with shy kitties as they blossom into happier, friendlier kitties. Join our volunteers to ensure each kitty gets more of the individual attention they need. Just two hours a week will make our kitties (and yourself) happier. We also welcome folks with strong backs to help us haul kitty litter a few times a month. This is an on-call job and requires a van or truck. Our thrift store also needs strong people to help haul heavy items, and cashiers to ring up sales. Please give Joyce a call at 207-229-8314.

SPORTS ASC York MS XC Ski Team Takes 1st and 2nd in MS Championships

YORK On Saturday, February 13, the Agamenticus Ski Club (ASC) York Middle School (MS) XC Ski Team competed in the Maine Jr. Ski Club Class B Championships at Starks Hill in Fryeburg. Temperatures hovered around 10 degrees, but with plenty of sunshine. The team and many families arrived well-prepared for the day and 3 girls and 6 boys from the team participated in two events: a 3km classic ski race and a 3km skate ski race. Now in its 4th year, the ASC York MS XC Ski Team has steadily developed into a high spirited, dedicated, and resilient team of xc skiers where none existed previously. Despite an unusually warm December and January with minimal snow to train on locally, the team had strong results at this years’ championships.. According to Coach Laura Creagan and Co-Founder of the Agamenticus Ski Club, “it’s taken our team a few years to reach this level of development and I’m very excited for each skier’s achievements and growing love for this awesome sport. Our team had two skiers take top 3 podium finishes, and three top 20 finishes!” Podium finishes included: 8th grader, Noah Taracena, who only in his 2nd year on the team, placed 1st and won the boys classic 3km race with a finish time of 12:05. He also placed 11th in the skate race with a finish time of 11:14, just 9 seconds out of top 10. On the girls team, in a breakthrough performance, 8th grader Laura Wilson took 2nd place overall in the girls classic 3km race with a finish time of 12:50. She also placed 4th overall in the girls skate 3km race with a time of 11:41. According to Coach Creagan, “Laura has been with the ski team since 5th grade,

Left: ASC SC Ski Team with their coaches at the XC ski championship competition. Right: Noah Taracena and Laura Wilson show off their XC ski medals.

she’s worked hard, she loves to ski and has made consistent, steady progress each season. I knew she could accomplish a top 3 and this year she really demonstrated her improved skill and strength.”

Top 20 performances included: 5th grader, Elise Creagan, who placed 11th with a finish time of 12:15, just 7 seconds from a top 10 finish. Elise also placed 17th in the classic race with a finish time of 14:56.

Across all of the Bank’s 64 locations, employees, customers and local businesses are partnering together to gather personal items, toiletries and non-perishable food items for “Hope Kits to be delivered to shelters in each of the communities Camden National Bank serves. The collection will take place throughout the month of February, and donations can be delivered to any of the banking centers in Maine. “When we first introduced Hope@Home in January of last year, there were a lot of unknowns, said Greg Dufour, president and chief executive officer of Camden National Bank. “We didn’t know how the program would be received by our

customers and communities or whether our dedication to this single issue would resonate with everyone the way it did with us. We knew we wanted to raise awareness around the issue of homelessness in Maine, and we knew we wanted to use our position and visibility to help make a difference. Through the communitybased, statewide program, for every home Camden National Bank finances, $100 is donated to a homeless shelter in the community of the new homeowner, and in the homeowner’s name. In 2015, Camden National Bank financed 442 new home purchases and raised $44,200 for Maine’s homeless shelters. Dufour added, "With a year under our belts, we can now report that response has been great. In addition to donations of over $44,000 to Maine's shelters, Hope@Home is also helping to increase awareness in our com-

munities. Whether it is someone stopping me on the street to thank us, a new homebuyer sending a note to one of our lenders complimenting the program, or our employees donating their own time to area shelters, we

have seen an increase in engagement to help the homeless. Our 'Hope Kits' are another way we can provide support and raise awareness for those in need in our state." To donate items for Camden National Bank’s “Hope Kit collection effort, visit your

local banking center, or go to CamdenNational.com to find a location near you. For more information on Hope@Home or how to join Camden National Bank’s efforts to help Maine’s homeless individuals, children and families, please visit CamdenNational.com/hopeathome.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, How can I upgrade from Vista Home edition to Window 7 Free? Vista will not be supported with updates and I need to go to Windows 7. Thanks, Art Dear Art, The short answer is that there is no free upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. The free upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or 8 is the only time

Microsoft has offered free operating system upgrades, and it is only available as a free upgrade until July 29, 2016. Unfortunately, the free upgrade offer isn't available for computers running Vista. So, how can you upgrade to Windows 7? The best thing to do is first make sure your computer is in good shape with some hardware diagnostics. Once you know the computer is in good working condition, you can then pur-

chase an upgrade and install Windows 7. Your local computer shop is a good place to start, but if you are comfortable doing the upgrade yourself, you can always find an upgrade version of Windows 7 in stores or online at places like Amazon. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have found I have a program called "speccy" on my computer & am wondering if this is doing anything useful or if it is a piece of malware. I googled it up but don't know which sites to trust. Thanks for all your great advice, Mary Dear Mary, You are in luck, it is not malware, Speccy is actually a useful little program from the makers of Ccleaner at www. piriform.com. Speccy is an advanced system information tool for your PC. It can tell you things like the type and amount of RAM on your system, also the speed and model of your

CPU, motherboard, hard drive, etc. Two things that I really like about speccy is that it will also tell you the temperature of your components, which is great if you think there is something overheating in your computer, and it will tell you exactly when Windows was installed on your computer. My guess is that someone who was working on your computer installed it so that they could access some of this information. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, When viewing your many answers to questions, how can I go directly to a certain page, rather than scrolling to the bottom and selecting 2 pages ahead at a time? Thanks, Paul Dear Paul, I assume you are talking about the questions page on my website at: askthecomputerlady.com/questions/. There are a couple of ways you can go directly to a certain page. the upper-right corner of the page. Just type what you are looking for in the search box and you will see a list of results. Next, there is a list of categories under the search box. All my questions are in categories, so if you want to see questions about Windows 10, for example, just scroll down, click on the "Windows 10" category and you will get a list of all Windows 10 questions. Lastly, at the bottom of the categories list, you will find a button that says, "Archives" and a dropdown link that says, "Select Month". Just select any month you are interested in, and you will see a list of questions and answers for that month. Hope this helps, and thank you for visiting my website. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, What would you recommend I do to make a back up for all my PC data if my PC ever goes to Cyber Heaven? I downloaded Carbonite for the 15 day free trial, now they are after me, so to speak, wanting me to sign up for one of their plan offers. I think I would find that should a time ever come for me to retrieve my back up, the site says it is easy to do myself. Really? Richard Dear Richard, Actually, I think that Carbonite is one of the easiest backup and restore methods available. Once you install the program (which you already have since you used the 15 day free trial) you really don't have to think about your backup any more. Carbonite automatically backs up your files as you make changes to them, or create new ones. You don't have to remember how to do anything else. In the event that you need to recover your files, all you need to know is your user name and password that you created with Carbonite, and you can log in and retrieve your files. If you run into difficulty, you can either call them for help, or have your local computer shop help you get your files back. Think about it this way, if you use Carbonite, your files are backed up, and you can get them back even if you need help to do so. If you don't use Carbonite and your computer crashes, you won't have the option of getting your files back with or without someone helping you. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Come browse her articles, watch instructional videos, ask questions, and view comments at www.askthecomputerlady.com.

Great Works Regional Land Trust Moves Ahead in its Farmland Protection Efforts

OGUNQUIT – Great Works Regional Land Trust (Great Works) will continue to place a high priority on conserving farmland in all six of its town region: Eliot, Wells, Ogunquit and the Berwicks during 2016. Board members and staff alike have been out meeting with many farmers during the fall of 2015 and will continue to do so throughout 2016. Informational meetings are being planned for March 3, 2016 in Eliot and on March 31, 2016 in the Berwicks. These sessions will be held jointly with Great Works partner organization, Maine Farmland Trust (MFT) with the goal of educating anyone interested in protecting local food supplies and farmland. Farm owners are invited to learn about conservation options and participate in a roundtable discussion about farms, generational transitions and options for preserving critical agricultural resources. In late 2015, Great Works had the pleasure of completing the conservation agreement on the Parker Farm on Maple Street in North Berwick. The transaction was finalized at the home of Charlie and Marjorie

Parker. It was a long awaited moment. While Charlie and Marjorie Parker were honored for their dedication to conservation during the warm days of summer last year with a small group gathered on the porch of their farmhouse for their commitment and generosity, completion of the transaction took much longer. On October 23, 2015, the Parkers sold an easement on 51 acres of farmland and donated an easement on 58 acres of forestland to protect the entire 109-acre property. In addition they granted a recreational trail easement. The Parker

family, who will continue to own the property. Many were involved in making this a successful project. Special thanks to Keith Fletcher of Maine Coast Heritage Trust, and to Darrell DeTour of Great Works for their work on this project, both helped in countless ways as Great Works navigated hurdles associated with funding sources from Land for Maine’s Future (LMF), federal funding, private donations and the challenges of due diligence. Chappell, Davis Conservation Foundation, 1772 Foundation, the Town of North Berwick and several private donors are all responsible for helping to fund the preservation of this southern Maine farm that will now remain available for growers in years to come. "It was memorable to have both Charlie and Marjorie at their living room table to sign the papers and receive the check," said Great Works President Tin

Smith. "It is times like this that make all our work worthwhile and so meaningful."
