YORK COUNTY – Julie Weiss, founder and executive director of Canine Community Corps was a recent guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Ogunquit, where she presented a program about Canine Community Corps (CCC), a new Maine nonprofit that rescues homeless dogs, helps rehabilitate jail inmates by having them train dogs, and enables military trauma survivors to adopt the dogs as emotional support animals. The inmate trainers spend eight weeks teaching the dogs basic commands, such as sit, stay, lie down and walk on a leash. The dogs are then placed with military veterans. The program is committed to
rehabilitating three groups: homeless dogs, jail inmates and veterans. “All three populations have unmet needs, so we bring them together to help themselves and each other,” says Julie Weiss. “We call it a compassionate community.” Weiss explained that the program prevents dogs from being euthanized. The compassionate community includes several York County residents on the Board of Directors. Susan Glick and Bob Luttman of York, and Kathleen Lyons of Acton, serve on the Board. Lyons knows firsthand the value of an Emotional Support dog. Brutus, her specially trained black lab, has changed

her life. “For many of us veterans,” Lyons explains, “PTSD [Post Traumatic Stress Disorder] gets in the way of our everyday lives. Before we know it symptoms appear--isolation, nightmares, bouts of depression and anxiety. We live in a hell all our own.” Once Brutus became her support dog, Lyon’s life changed. “An Emotional Support Assistant has helped me put some of those handicaps aside,” she says. “My life has become full.” In the CCC model, the rescued dogs will live with inmates at York County Jail in Alfred. See DOGS page 2... travel/best-coastal-small-town/ ogunquit-maine/. Please keep reposting, using your own photos of Ogunquit to remind your friends to vote! No sign up or email is required. The contest ends on March 16. A first place win and the related coverage which will result, will bring Ogunquit a significant amount of national and global exposure – literally millions of dollars worth of free publicity. This is important for our small tourismpowered communities.
Sarah Orne Jewett House Hosts Sledding Party SOUTH BERWICK – Your family is invited to a sledding party hosted by the Sarah Orne Jewett House Museum & Visitor Center on Sunday, March 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. In a letter from December 1889, Maine’s beloved author wrote, "This morning I was taking a drive about town and I beheld Stubby faring along with his sled, which is about as large as a postage-stamp. So I borrowed it and down I slid over that pound-cake frosting of a coast most splendid. Then an hour later in bursts Stubby, with shining morning face: ‘There were two fellows that said Aunt
Sarah was the boss, she went down side-saddle over the hill just like the rest of the boys!’" Follow in Sarah’s footsteps and enjoy traditional winter pastimes with your family in South Berwick. Grab your snow gear and join us for a sledding party meeting first at the Jewett House visitor center and heading to the Hamilton House at 40 Vaughan’s Lane. We'll sled for an hour and return to the Jewett House to enjoy hot cocoa and treats, crafts, and a short story. Participants must provide their own sleds, and helmets are strongly recommended. In the event that sledding is not possible, the
