YORK COUNTY – Julie Weiss, founder and executive director of Canine Community Corps was a recent guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Ogunquit, where she presented a program about Canine Community Corps (CCC), a new Maine nonprofit that rescues homeless dogs, helps rehabilitate jail inmates by having them train dogs, and enables military trauma survivors to adopt the dogs as emotional support animals. The inmate trainers spend eight weeks teaching the dogs basic commands, such as sit, stay, lie down and walk on a leash. The dogs are then placed with military veterans. The program is committed to
rehabilitating three groups: homeless dogs, jail inmates and veterans. “All three populations have unmet needs, so we bring them together to help themselves and each other,” says Julie Weiss. “We call it a compassionate community.” Weiss explained that the program prevents dogs from being euthanized. The compassionate community includes several York County residents on the Board of Directors. Susan Glick and Bob Luttman of York, and Kathleen Lyons of Acton, serve on the Board. Lyons knows firsthand the value of an Emotional Support dog. Brutus, her specially trained black lab, has changed

her life. “For many of us veterans,” Lyons explains, “PTSD [Post Traumatic Stress Disorder] gets in the way of our everyday lives. Before we know it symptoms appear--isolation, nightmares, bouts of depression and anxiety. We live in a hell all our own.” Once Brutus became her support dog, Lyon’s life changed. “An Emotional Support Assistant has helped me put some of those handicaps aside,” she says. “My life has become full.” In the CCC model, the rescued dogs will live with inmates at York County Jail in Alfred. See DOGS page 2... travel/best-coastal-small-town/ ogunquit-maine/. Please keep reposting, using your own photos of Ogunquit to remind your friends to vote! No sign up or email is required. The contest ends on March 16. A first place win and the related coverage which will result, will bring Ogunquit a significant amount of national and global exposure – literally millions of dollars worth of free publicity. This is important for our small tourismpowered communities.
Sarah Orne Jewett House Hosts Sledding Party SOUTH BERWICK – Your family is invited to a sledding party hosted by the Sarah Orne Jewett House Museum & Visitor Center on Sunday, March 8 from 1 to 3 p.m. In a letter from December 1889, Maine’s beloved author wrote, "This morning I was taking a drive about town and I beheld Stubby faring along with his sled, which is about as large as a postage-stamp. So I borrowed it and down I slid over that pound-cake frosting of a coast most splendid. Then an hour later in bursts Stubby, with shining morning face: ‘There were two fellows that said Aunt
Sarah was the boss, she went down side-saddle over the hill just like the rest of the boys!’" Follow in Sarah’s footsteps and enjoy traditional winter pastimes with your family in South Berwick. Grab your snow gear and join us for a sledding party meeting first at the Jewett House visitor center and heading to the Hamilton House at 40 Vaughan’s Lane. We'll sled for an hour and return to the Jewett House to enjoy hot cocoa and treats, crafts, and a short story. Participants must provide their own sleds, and helmets are strongly recommended. In the event that sledding is not possible, the

Salting an area or using rubberbacked mats may help make them less slippery. Add a reflector and house numbers for visibility by your letter carrier, plows, emergency vehicles and others. Watch for mail carriers on foot and slow-moving postal vehicles. Leave a light on to help illuminate potential hazards on the way to your mailbox. That’s why the Postal Service reminds residents not to overlook regular upkeep of residential mailboxes as part of any snow and ice removal routine. In order to avoid an interruption in service, here are a few tips that never go out of season: Keep stairs and walkways clear of snow and ice. Mail carriers are especially vulnerable to slips, trips and falls during the winter months. Remove obstr uctions around a mailbox. If you have a mailbox at the road, keep it clear of packed snow. ...DOGS from page 1 The inmates will care for the dogs, and through weekly classes will train the dogs to respond to basic commands. “Research shows that caring for dogs can play a significant role in rehabilitating inmates, according to Weiss. The CCC, with dogs provided by the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk, is poised to begin its cycle of caring and service. Dogs will live with carefully screened inmates at York County Jail. Professional trainer Kim VanSickle, who has trained dog-inmate teams at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham, will train the dog-inmate teams in Alfred. Then Sue Walsh of Acton, also a certified dog trainer, whose long career includes training Brutus as well as puppies who become service dogs, will train the veteran-dog teams. Under Sue’s guidance, the veterans’ dogs will reach the level of Canine Good Citizen so that they can become registered support dogs, welcome everywhere their humans go. Veterans will talk with other veterans about the value of having such a dog. Susan Glick, Board Chair, notes, “Many of us know the difficulties faced by wounded veterans, or people who have made a mistake that landed them in the county jail. We also know the usual fate of shelter dogs. The CCC offers a model for achieving winning outcomes for all three groups. Based on values of “Rescue - Dignity - Service, the CCC is committed to rehabilitating the three populations that it serves. The CCC welcomes contributions, volunteers, and comments. To learn more, visit caninecommunitycorps.org.

~ News ~ Helping Others is Worth the Plunge BERWICK – Mid-February is a time for skiing, sledding or just keeping cozy with books or movies by the fireplace. Few would consider diving into the frigid ocean waters of Portland’s Eastern Promenade. But then, Jeannine Brunette of Berwick is not like most Mainers. Brunette and other intrepid adventurers raced into the frigid water on Saturday February 21, as part of Camp Sunshine’s annual “Portland Polar Dip. The money raised benefits the Casco based nonprofit’s recreational facilitry that provides a respite for children with life-threatening illnesses. Brunette, who turns 81 next month, was one of the oldest participants at Saturday’s event. “I’m thrilled to do it because it helps so many younger children. As long as I can do it, I’ll do it said Brunette, proudly. This is Brunette’s fourth year taking the “polar plunge, which has become an annual event for her. Her first Polar Dip coincided with the anniversary of her brother’s death, who died in a car accident when she was 16-years-old. She said she told him “I’m doing this for you. Though Brunette’s participation in the Polar Dip is relatively recent, her involvement with Camp Sunshine stretches
for many years. “If you have children who are well, said Brunette, “you are truly blessed. Despite her age, Brunette shows no sign of curbing her volunteer activity. In addition to Camp Sunshine, she is active with the Kittery Lions Club and her Elvis Presley Fan Club. “I just love people, she said. “And whatever I can do, I do. Last year, Camp Sunshine raised $14,000 in total, according to events coordinator, Ashley Caswell. Adding Brunette to the strength of an event such as the Portland Polar Dip and the resources of Camp Sunshine, this year’s goal was to exceed $20,000. That is enough to send 10 families to Camp Sunshine. – So, will Brunette take the plunge again, next year? “Abso-

lutely, she said. “If the Good Lord tells me today, ‘Jeannine, you’re coming with me,’ I would say, ‘OK. I’m ready,’ said Brunette. “But I hope he lets me stick around for a little bit longer. Portions of this article written by Adam Marletta.

NORTH BERWICK – Meet Whisper, a handsome blue tiger male with a sweet gentle personality! This nice guy definitely believes a lap is a terrible thing to waste so he will take advantage of an empty lap whenever possible. He can be a little shy in new situations but once he feels safe and establishes a bond with you he turns into a total loving snuggle bug. Whisper came into ACAR from a local family that was just not able to provide adequate care and food for the number of pets that were in their home. Whisper's companions have all found their forever families, now he is looking to you to get a family that will love him. Whisper has never been an outside kitty so he is looking for a family who will allow him to continue his indoor only life style for his safety and longevity. Whisper is current on all necessary vaccinations, is neutered and has passed his well-

ness exam. He will do best with a calm relaxed household with older children and other nonaggressive house cats and small dogs. If you think this good looking young guy would be a nice addition to your family, you may contact his foster mom, Bonnie at 603-781-1807. In addition to our featured pet of the week, ACAR has a limited selection of teenage kittens, a nice selection of young adult cats and a smaller number of older cats also looking to you for new loving families. Our “Support For Life program asks for the pledge of a $10 monthly donation. Donations may be sent to: Another Chance Animal Rescue, PO Box 552, North Berwick, Maine 03906. Another Chance Animal Rescue would like to thank Business Owners and Donors who provided the equipment, labor
and expertise to install the muchneeded water system at our Sanford Adoption Center on Route 4. For the last four years our Sanford Adoption Center has worked with hundreds of strayed, abandoned, displaced and injured felines without the benefit of running water in the building. All of the water for cleaning condos, washing floors, doing dishes, filling water bowls had to be carried in from the home. Thanks and appreciation go out to Carl and Helga Dunbar of Carl’s Water Systems of Wells, Calvin B. Hilton of Calvin B. Hilton, Excavating of Ogunquit, Armand, Eric and Carrie of Armand Tardif Plumbing of Biddeford, Mark Inangelo, Electrician of Ogunquit, Sheila Bemish and Jo-Ann Buffum, and those who donated to GoFundMe.com. Special thanks go out to our dedicated manager, Marilyn Harley for working in difficult conditions without a complaint!
Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS – Meet Grover‌ again! He has been featured in the paper several times, and has almost found a home several times but something always happens. Maybe he’s destined to remain a Safe Haven kitty, but hopefully his right person is still out there. Grover is a beautiful curmudgeon. He’s absolutely precious when no other kitty is around. We all love him, but he would truly blossom as an only cat. At our adoption center Grover grudgingly shares the kitchen with other kitties but he would prefer being the only one. Because we love Grover, we’ve given him secret hiding places where he can sulk, nap or spy from. Grover can be a real mush as well. Some of us can pick him up and hold him and kiss him. He rubs against our legs to be patted. If you get to know Grover, you’ll love him. Yes, he may stay with us forever, but we
Animal Welfare Society WEST KENNEBUNK – Meet Gilroy, a 1 1/2-year old American Rabbit who is a friendly fellow who loves getting attention. He’s also quite fond of being able to explore and sniff around new areas. A habitat filled with rabbit necessities, like toys, grass, and treats, would keep him happy and healthy in a new home. Gilroy’s favorite treat? Graham crackers. He’ll gladly steal them if he can. Guinea Pigs Galore AWS recently assisted the State of Maine’s Animal Welfare Program with a guinea pig rescue just in time for the 13th annual “Adopt Rescued Guinea Pigs Month. We now have many cute guinea pigs that will be available for adoption soon.

certainly do want him to have a chance at a real home with his very own person(s). Now is a great time to donate to Safe Haven. Two weeks are left in our latest $8,000 matching grant from Carolyn and Bruce Gowdy. All donations to our building fund up to $8,000 will be matched, so your donation essentially doubles in value! Mail your check to Safe Haven Humane Society, PO Box 1842, Wells, ME 04090, or donate online. With our new adoption center opening soon and our IGA plaza thrift store will have longer hours this summer and we need new volunteers. Call to help with cat care, front desk greeting, laundry, cat socializing, hauling litter and more. We also need volunteers to sew items or make crafts for fundraising, haul donations, and help with painting. Got a special skill? Call Leonore at 207985-3227. One of our biggest ongoing needs is for cat room buddies. Socialization is essential for rescued kitties. Each needs a gentle, helping hand to learn to trust and love again. Our kitties are not in cages. They’re in happy, free roaming, home-like cat rooms, so working with them is fun and easy. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Playtime keeps them in good physical and mental shape also.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Open Auditions for “West Side Story at Hackmatack BERWICK If you want to produce a play about the Jets and Sharks in Berwick, Maine, you might have to look high and low to find actors for the Puerto Rican roles – if you are looking for authenticity. Hackmatack Playhouse has decided to take auditions to Boston to cast some of the roles for this summer’s production of “West Side Story. Auditions for the popular Broadway hit will be held on Saturday, March 29 in Boston in the Rehearsal Hall A of the Calderwood Pavillion, 527 Tremont St. Auditions for this and the Hackmatack’s other three shows will also be held in South Berwick. “You don’t have to have Latinos cast in the roles of the Puerto Rican characters, said Michael Guptill, owner of Hackmatack Theater, “but it sure adds a genuine touch to this show about two warring gangs and racial relations in New York City. Although auditions in Boston are primarily for “West Side Story, directors may look to fill specific roles for its other shows, Guptill said. According to Guptill, the theater has had great success in the past holding auditions in more urban areas to bring in a more
diverse cast. Auditions for Hairspray were held in New York to fill out a cast with both Caucasian and African American actors. According to the most recent US Census, less than 1 percent of the population of South Berwick and Berwick is Hispanic. Auditions for “Unnecessary Farce will be March 7 at the South Berwick Community at 71 Norton St. and for all three musicals “West Side Story, as well as “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and “Ruthless held March 21 at the community center. Directors at Hackmatack are looking for males 15 years old or over and females 9 and over for the various shows. Actors for the musicals will be asked to sing from one of the shows and provide a monologue no longer than two minutes, said Crystal Lisbon, artistic director at Hackmatack. Sheet music for these shows as well as detailed lists of characters will be available beforehand on the Hackmatack website, she noted. Some candidates in the Berwick auditions may be asked to return on March 22 for additional singing, reading and a dance call, she said. Those unavailable for callbacks will be asked to indicate this in an appointment request.
Artist Inspired by Nature KITTERY – Kris Weyrick-Scott is a Fiber Artist/Instructor living in Nottingham, NH. Her work will be exhibited at Just Us Chickens Gallery, 16A Shapleigh Road, Kittery, from March 3 to March 30. You can meet Kris at the gallery on Friday, March 6, 4 to 7 p.m. After discovering the wonderful sculptural properties of wool, Weyrick-Scott studied both needle and wet felting techniques and utilizes both in her work. One of the “perks of her craft is visiting local farms and wool festivals to find the very best, locally-sourced sheep, goat and alpaca wool. She has added an angora rabbit to her pet me-

J. Dennis Robinson Speaks on The Smuttynose Murders YORK – J. Dennis Robinson will talk about the infamous Smuttynose Murders and his recent book “Mystery on the Isles of Shoals: Closing the Case on the Smuttynose Ax Murders of 1873. The event will take place on Wednesday, March 4, at 6 p.m. at the Museums of Old York’s Jefferds Tavern, 3 Lindsay Road in York. There are many opinions and theories about what happened on Smuttynose Island that night; the guilt or I nnocence of Louis Wagner. Robinson sifted through historical documents and court records to document the truth. Come hear how a local historian fleshed out the facts surrounding a tragic robbery gone wrong.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Your Best Homeowner Tax Return: How To Deduct Mortgage Points If you itemize your deductions and can take the mortgage interest deduction on your federal income tax, you may be able to deduct the points you paid on your home mortgage, too. Points are prepaid interest, so they get reported as home mortgage interest on Form 1040, Schedule A . The total deductible points you paid during the year (along with the interest you paid) show up on the Form 1098 your lender sends to you. You can typically deduct points in full in the year they’re paid, if you meet all these requirements: • The mortgage was for your primary home. • Paying points is an established business practice in your area. • The points you paid were typical for your area. • You use the cash method of accounting (you report income in the year you receive it and
deduct expenses in the year you pay them). • The points you paid didn't cover services or products that show up on your loan settlement sheet such as appraisal fees, inspection fees, title fees, attorney fees or property taxes. • The points you paid at or before closing, plus the points the seller paid, were at least as much as the points charged. You didn't borrow money from your lender or mortgage broker to pay the points. • You used your loan to buy or build your primary home. • The points were computed as a percentage of the principal amount of your mortgage. • The amount is clearly shown as points on your settlement statement. If you don’t meet the IRS’ requirements (and this typically happens in a refinance), you may still be able to deduct your points over the life of your new mortgage rather than in a single
year. You can deduct the rest of the points over the life of the loan if you meet these requirements: • You use the cash method of accounting (you report income in the year you receive it and deduct expenses in the year you pay them). • Your loan is secured by a home. The home does not need to be your main home. • Your loan is for not more than 30 years. • If your loan period is more than 10 years, the terms of your loan are the same as other loans offered in your area for the same
or longer period. • Either your loan amount is $250,000 or less, or the number of points is not more than: • 4 points, if your loan period is 15 years or less. • 6 points, if your loan period is more than 15 years.
Other Pointers On Points When a seller pays points for you as a buyer, you have

Health & Fitness Chocolate Historically More Than Just Food Many cannot resist chocolate, that beloved creamy, sweet confection derived from cocoa beans, milk and sugar. All over the world people love to indulge in chocolate, especially come Valentine’s Day. According to data from Leatherhead Food Research, Switzerland consumes more chocolate per capita than any country in the world. Ireland, the United Kingdom, Austria and Belgium round out the top five.
Women’s Life Imaging Center is the region’s premier imaging center for women.
Despite its apparent popularity in Europe, chocolate was first popularized among the Olmecs of Mexico, who used the cocoa beans more than 3,500 years ago. However, it wasn’t until the last 200 years that chocolate turned into the sweet treat that is known and loved today. Aztecs believed cocoa had aphrodisiac properties, and chocolate contains a chemical called phenylethylamine, which

employ other methods to produce realistic results. Legend has it that Bosco brand chocolate syrup was used as blood in the famed shower scene in the classic horror movie “Psycho.â€? Bosco was used because it showed up great in black and white. • Skin care: Cocoa butter, a component of chocolate, has long been used to moisturize and soothe dry skin. Many spas now incorporate organic chocolate into their healing and beauty therapies. • Perfume: Chocolate produces more than 400 distinct smells and has been used to make perfume more fragrant. • Mood enhancement: Chocolate may help to improve mood, as it is a mild stimulant and can affect serotonin levels, which govern those feel-good feelings, in the brain. • Postage: In 2013, Belgium’s post office sold limited-edition stamps that were varnished with 40 percent of a cocoa product. ~ Where To Dine ~ The Weekly Recipe: New England Clam Chowder
17
WE ARE NOW
OPEN!!
This clam chowder recipe is easy, and very tasty. Make it the day before or in the morning for supper and it will taste even better. Two options are given. Option 2 will take a bit more time to make but the cost will be less, and the taste more flavorful.
Ingredients: 6 slices of bacon cut into 1/2â€? strips 2 cups chopped sweet yellow onions 1-Âź cups chopped celery to 1/2â€? pieces ½ teaspoon of sea salt ½ teaspoon of dried thyme 2 garlic cloves, minced 5 cups of peeled and diced potatoes (if you use red skin potatoes, do not peel, they add nice color to chowder) ½ cup of all-purpose flower 3 cups of whole milk 1 bay leaf Option 1: Six 6 1/2 ounce cans of chopped clams, undrained Option 2: 5 lbs. of fresh steamers clams in shell to produce 3 pounds of clams Option 1: Four 8 ounce bottles of clam juice Option 2: Use a quart (32 ounces) of the clam broth from steaming the clams
Directions: Cook the bacon in a Dutch oven or large stew pot over medium heat until crisp. Remove the bacon and set aside. Save 2 to 3 tablespoons of the bacon fat in the pot and dispose the rest. Add the onions, celery, sea salt, thyme, pepper, and garlic to the bacon drippings in your pan. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes until vegetables are nice and tender. If you’re using Option 1 drain the chopped clams and save the liquid. Add the clams, potatoes, clam juice, and the bay leaf to the pan and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender. Discard the bay leaf. Place your uncooked steamers clams in a separate large pot. Add a can or bottle
Everyday Special $10 OFF $35 OR MORE of your favorite beer or ale to the pot and cover. Cook the clams on a medium high heat until the liquids begin to bubble and steam over the clams. Open the cover of the pot about half way to prevent spilling over onto the stove, and cook for about 5 minutes or until the clams open up. Remove from heat, dump out clam broth into bowl, and save. Let the clams cool, open the shells, and clean them of its black beard, and put aside. Use your clam broth in place of bottled clam juice. Now continue with the recipe. Spoon flour into a measuring cup and level with a knife. Combine it with milk and stir with a whisk until smooth. Add the mixture to the pan and bring to a boil. Cook for 12 to 15 minutes or until thick, stirring constantly. Add the cooked bacon during the last 2 minutes of cooking and you’re ready to serve. If the chowder has been refrigerated, heat slowly on medium heat and stir often to prevent burning for about 10 to 15 minutes. This will serve 6 big bowls of chowder or 12 cups of chowder. Enjoy your Clam Chow-da! Shared by Paul Parent Newsletter

Dear Computer Lady, I have over 3000 photos on my iPhone 4s. Should i put them on my computer or onto a disk? There are too many for one disk. How would I do this? Kathy Dear Kathy, You should always have more than one copy of your important files, so if these photos are important to you, yes, you should put them on your computer, on one or more disks or both. Your first step is to get the pictures on your computer. There are a couple of ways to do this, one is to use iTunes on your computer, then plug in your phone and sync the photos using iTunes. I have all the photos on my iPhone backed up to iCloud, and then use www.icloud.com
on my computer to access my photos. This way, the pictures are on my phone, on my computer, and backed up on iCloud. Another way to get them off your phone is to email them as attachments, but with over 3000 photos, that would be very time consuming. Once you have the photos on your computer, you should be able to easily back them up to an optical diks like a CD or DVD, or back them up to an external hard drive. I use Roxio Creator to put files on optical disks, and I usually just drag and drop files when using external drives. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Read your newsletter every week and love it, have learned from it! I know how

strongly you feel about backing up ones files. Is a 2nd external hard drive a good back-up for my 1st external hard drive, or am I being redundant? Gary Dear Gary, The reason I feel so strongly about backing up ones files is because I have seen how devastated people are when they realize that their photos or work documents are gone. If your files are important to you, you need to take care of them. I like to keep my files in three locations: 1. On my computer. 2. On an external hard drive that is connected to my computer. 3. In a remote location that is not connected to my computer. The first two locations protect me from hard drive failure, which is still fairly common. The third, remote location, protects me from fire, flood, theft, natural disaster, and a type of nasty malware called, ransomware. If your files are already on your computer, and also on an external hard drive, putting them on another external hard drive won't help much, unless you are keeping one of the external drives in a different physical location. You could use two external hard drives, and rotate them, keeping one at another location and switching them every week. An easier offsite backup would be one of the backup ser-

vices like Carbonite or Mozy. I'm glad you are thinking about backing up, many people don't until it is too late. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, For about the last three issues, your Weekly Newsletter email opens with this message at the top in a big red box. "This message could be a scam. The sender's account may have been compromised and used to send malicious messages. If this message seems suspicious, let us know and then alert the sender as well (in some way other than email). Learn more Report this suspicious message Ignore, I trust this message". I continue to read and marked Ignore at least twice, but it is continuing to happen. Scary, especially in this day and time. Why and what do I need to do? Thanks so much. Enjoy reading your newsletter, Rae Dear Rae, This message is your email program's way of telling you that the email message did not actually come from the account in the return address field. In the case of my newsletter, the return address, eboston@gwi. net is not the actual address that the newsletter is sent from (I use a list server that sends the message out to all 40,000 subscribers at once, not something I can do using my regular email servers). In fact, your message to me had the same warning at the top. This is because you filled out the form on my website, and it came to me as an email with your email address as the return address. My email program warned me that the message was not sent from your email address. I'm not sure that you can do anything to stop the message, but now that you know what it means, you can be on the lookout for messages that might actually have come from a compromised system. Elizabeth
Dear Computer Lady, I receive almost weekly calls from some company that tells me that my computer is sending all kinds of information from windows out to the internet and they represent the Windows company and need to access my computer in order to fix the problem. This has been going on for a couple of years. I view this as a fraud and never allow them to access my computer and have repeatedly asked them to discontinue the calls. This never happens. Am I mistaken or is this real? If it is fraudulent how can I stop the calls? Thanks for your helpful responses to other problems. Hope you can help, Paul L in Utah Dear Paul, I get these calls too. You are right to hang up on them, it is nothing more than a scam. Microsoft will never call you to tell you that your computer is having problems. Often, the scammers will have you sit at your computer and bring up a screen with a long identification number that they will then read to you (it is supposed to be proof that they are getting the signal from your computer) the thing is, this number that they have you display on your screen is THE SAME ON EVERY WINDOWS COMPUTER! They try to tell you that it is a unique identification number for your computer, but it is not. Asking them to stop calling you will do no good. They are not legitimate, law abiding companies. The only way to get them to stop calling you is to change to an unlisted telephone number. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Come browse her articles, watch instructional videos, ask questions, and view comments at: www.askthecomputerlady. com/questions.

You’ll likely do that capital gains calculation when you sell the home many years from now, so be sure to file your settlement sheet where you can find it in the future.
