Mala Practices Mindfulness To Help Others DOVER, NH Yoga has many personal benefits, and on Sunday, March 2 these will extend to an entire community because of a Yoga Mala, taking place at the Rivermill at Dover Landing. This is the sixth annual event, where more than 200 yogis and yoga instructors from yoga studios in Maine and New Hampshire come together for three hours to practice and raise funds for local food and fuel assistance. Funds will also provide yoga scholarships to disenfranchised populations in the region. One hundred percent of donations raised from the Yoga Mala will be distributed

to non-profit organizations. These include Seacoast Eat Local‘s SNAP campaign, which
encourages SNAP recipients to shop at farmers markets, SATYA – Seacoast Area Teach-
ers of Yoga in Action, which brings yoga to under served populations, and to three com-
munity action committees in York, Rockingham and Strafford counties for fuel assistance. Rae Lynn Stackpoole, who owns Yoga on York, a yoga studio in York is one of the founding members of Yoga Mala. She observes that the “energy and inspiration in a room full of 200 people donating their time and dedicating their energy to the cause of lifting others up is transforming.” Personal and studio pledges have been pouring in before the event, and will continue to be collected through Sunday. For more information and to make a pledge visit www.yogamala.kintera.org.

OGUNQUIT New Orleans may be warmer, but everything will heat up during this weekend’s Mardi Gras celebration in Ogunquit, with fire juggling, mad hatters and more. Festivities will include a hat and mask making party, a costume contest and parade down Main Street. The revelry will continue with an awards ceremony at the Old Village Inn and a performance by the Soggy Po’ Boys New Orleans Style Jazz Band at the Dunway Center at

7:30 p.m. One highlight of the extravaganza will be the performance by David O’Connor AKA “Duncan Doh-Naught”, who has been astounding audiences with his fire juggling for over two decades. During a phone conversation from his Barrington, N.H. home at press time “Duncan” worried a bit about the weather this weekend, musing that it might be too cold to juggle barefoot. But he assured, no matter what, he’d put on a “scintillating show.”

Hio Ridge Presents Artistic Authenticity in Kittery family home in Denmark, Maine to live, cook and collaborate. During a two-month residency they created a 45-minute piece focusing on the nature of youth, the embodied experience of music, and the endless search for patience. The dancers like to think of themselves as artist-inventors, constantly tinkering, never
accepting the possibility that their life’s work might not be the work they love. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. followed by questions from the audience. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. They can be purchased at www.brownpapertickets.com or at River Run Bookstore at Wallingford Square in Kittery.
Ogunquit Playhouse Announces Children’s Auditions with no appointments made in advance. Participating children should prepare a brief musical theater song to showcase their talents. They should also bring sheet music, in the correct key, for the accompanist. Auditioning dancers for Billy Elliot should wear comfortable clothes and ballet shoes. Performers may also bring a picture with a resume stapled to the back. Children chosen for the children’s ensemble in Billy
Elliot will be selected for two separate casts and will participate in a fee-based two-week rehearsal period prior to the show. Children must be available to perform in either 16 shows for two weeks or 24 shows for three weeks. Some performers may have the option to do the entire five-week run of 40 performances. For more information, visit ogunquitplayhouse.org/ contact/childrens-auditionslocal. Please do not call the dance studios for information.

toenail fungus can be very difficult, and even the most effective toenail fungus treatments can leave men and women susceptible to reinfection. Though pharmaceutical treatments have proven effective at targeting toenail fungus in two-thirds of patients, such medications have been associated with some potentially harmful side effects, including liver damage, and many antifungal drugs are very toxic. The body’s reaction to medications aimed at treating
toenail fungus can be tricky, limiting the drug’s effectiveness while simultaneously increasing the risk that men and women may succumb to other ailments. The liver tends to recognize certain toenail fungus medications as toxins, which can lead to liver damage that may produce far more drastic consequences than toenail fungus. Because of the body’s tendency to recognize certain treatments as toxic, many men and women have begun to seek alternative ways to address their toenail fungus. For example, anti-fungal nail polishes are considered safe alternatives to tradi-
tional medications. However, these topical drugs often must be applied regularly for up to one year before they produce any results. In addition, such treatments can be harmful to men and women with sensitive skin, potentially resulting in rashes and redness. Laser therapy is another alternative to toenail fungus medications. Studies have shown that laser therapy has successfully eradicated toenail fungus in roughly 33 percent of patients who underwent the therapy. However, laser theraSee FUNGUS page 11...

...FUNGUS from page 11 py can cost as much as $1,000 per treatment, and some patients have suffered burns on the nails and skin during the procedure. The risks associated with medications and other toenail fungus treatments have led many men and women to seek natural treatments that won’t be accompanied by potentially unhealthy and painful side effects. For example, phenolic antiseptic powder packs a potentially powerful punch against toenail fungus without the negative side effects of other treatments. Discovered by pioneering 19th century surgeon Sir Joseph Lister, the antiseptic properties of phenol were found to kill the harmful bacteria and fungus that caused infection. In addition to addressing toenail fungus, there are other ways men and women can improve the appearance of their feet. Cast out calluses and corns. Calluses and corns appear when dead skin builds up along the heels and toes and bony areas of the feet. While unsightly, calluses and corns can be easily eliminated with a pumice stone or foot file used immediately after showering. Consult a podiatrist if your calluses or corns are especially pesky and difficult to remove. Address ingrown toenails. Athletes and dancers tend to suffer the most from ingrown toenails, a potentially painful condition wherein the toenail grows into the surrounding skin. Ingrown toenails are often a byproduct of the toes rubbing tightly against the shoe during physical activity. Soaking feet in an Epsom salt bath twice a day for 15 minutes can reduce pain and inflammation, while cutting toenails straight across can reduce the likelihood that the nails will grown into the skin. Wear footwear that fits. Wearing footwear that’s too small or restrictive can increase your risk of ingrown toenails and hammer toe, a deformity that occurs when the toes become claw-like. Ill-fitting footwear can cause hammer toes or aggravate preexisting hammer toes, while also increasing the risk of friction between the toes and the interior of the shoes, potentially causing ingrown toenails. When shopping for shoes, always find footwear that fits, even if it means sacrificing style for
comfort. This article was provided by MetroCreative. The Sentinel

5 Foods For The Over 50 Crowd Men and women must alter their diets as they age. Portion sizes that young
adults might have been able to get away must shrink when those same men and women
enter their 30s. And as thirtysomethings head into their 40s, what’s on the plate requires more careful consideration than it might have a decade ago. The same goes for men
and women over 50, who must take steps to reduce their risk for heart disease, stroke and diabetes. One of the easiest ways to do just that is to eat healthy foods. The following are five flavorful and healthy foods tailor-made for the over 50 crowd. 1. Apples: Apples definitely qualify as a superfood, helping reduce cholesterol by preventing plaque buildup in the blood vessels and, as a result cutting an individual’s risk of diabetes considerably. In fact, a recent study published in the British Medical Journal found that

eating at least two servings of apples per week can reduce a person’s risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 23 percent. Apples also make for a great source of fiber, potassium and vitamin C. 2. Blueberries: Blueberries help men and women maintain healthy blood sugar levels because they are high in soluble fiber, which lowers cholesterol while slowing the body’s uptake of glucose. And despite their relatively small size, blueberries contain more fiber, vitamins and minerals per ounce than any other fruit. 3. Broccoli: Though broccoli might not have been your best friend during childhood, you may want to cozy up to this powerful green vegetable now that you have cracked the half-century mark. Broccoli is loaded with vitamin C. A single 3.5 ounce serving of broccoli contains more than 150 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, which can shorten the duration of the common cold. In addition, a 2013 British study published in Medical News Today found that broccoli may help prevent osteoarthritis, a degeneration of joint cartilage and the underlying bone that is most common from middle age onward. A similar study from researchers at New York’s Roswell Park Cancer Institute published in the same publication six years earlier found that just three servings of broccoli per month can decrease bladder cancer risk by as much as 40 percent. 4. Fava Beans: Fava beans are cholesterol-free and low in fat. Fava beans also may provide cardiovascular benefits and help men and women maintain healthy weights. Fava beans are considered “nutrientdense,” a term used to describe low-calorie foods that boast lots of nutrients, and are an excellent source of vitamin B1, which is important for nervous system function and energy metabolism. 5. Oatmeal: Another food that might never make youngsters’ lists of their favorite foods, oatmeal is nonetheless a healthy option at the breakfast table. Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which can reduce cholesterol levels and subseSee FOOD page 24...

Lower the interest rate by shortening the duration of the loan. A longer loan term generally carries with it a higher interest rate. If it is possible to put down more money and reduce the length of the loan, you can earn a smaller interest rate, paying less over the life of the loan.

According to Consumer Reports, credit unions have low operating costs because of their nonprofit status. As a result, their lending rates can be quite competitive. Many people belong to credit unions just to take advantage of the convenient loan policies. Consider online banks, which can be quite
competitive with loan rates. Such banks also are more convenient, allowing applicants to apply from the comforts of home. You may be able to have several online banks compete for your business by filling out a few forms. However, keep in mind that applying online may make you more likely to receive emails from various lenders, even after you have purchased a vehicle.

WELLS Adoption Event March 8, 10am-3pm, at St. David’s Episcopal Church, Rt. 1, Kennebunk. Meet your next best friend! Needed Friskies brand canned cat food, especially poultry flavors. Also Temptations cat treats as training rewards. Many times, stray cats are ignored. Too many people think it’s acceptable for cats to be hungry and homeless, that it’s just a part of society. If left to roam without food and water and shelter, it’s only a matter of time before any cat will perish. Sadly, we’ve seen it happen many times over the years. But Safe Haven will never accept it. We work toward the day when no cat will ever be homeless, and each will be loved and protected. Gemmie Gemmie, like many other kitties, had a very tough start in life. Happily, someone reported her and Safe Haven rescued her. This pregnant cat was living outside under a bush. On a freezing cold, moonless night, we arrived in total darkness to a tired-looking apartment building in a sad part of town. We spotted no strays, so we knocked on doors. A tumble of teens came out as we inquired about the cat. Doors opened from other apartments, with each person telling their

story about “the cat”. This poor cat had appeared a month or so before, with a litter of kittens, which had died from the cold and hunger. They led us up a steep hill behind the apartment and we searched. After we climbed back down, we heard a mewing, and a scrawny but bigbellied kitty trotted up to us. We fed this lovely young grey tabby. She ate ravenously. We wrapped her in soft, warm fleece blankets and put her in our carrier. She didn’t argue. We named this darling kitty Gemmie. She’s been fostered by a wonderful volunteer. She wasn’t pregnant after all, just malnourished with a big belly. Now spayed, healthy and free of parasites, this happy girl is ready for her forever home. Gemmie is one of the sweetest, happiest kitties you’ll ever meet. She loves dogs and people, and will be a wonderful blessing in your life. She deserves a loving home. Yours? For the latest stories and photos, visit our Facebook postings. Better yet, become a part of Safe Haven. Donate, volunteer, foster, adopt. Be a part of the No-Kill movement!

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Meet Gabriel Gabriel is a one-year-old Lemon Hound pulled from a very high kill shelter in North Carolina. Gabriel has made his way to Maine looking for a new loving family that can love and care for him. This sweet guy is considered a special needs dog, having lost his hind leg to a steel foot hold trap injury. Gabriel, despite his ordeal, is happy, gentle and well adjusted. He will do well with children in any age group, non-aggressive dogs and respectful cats. Gabriel will be neutered in the immediate future, vaccinations are current, and he was heart worm tested. If you have been thinking about adding a nice good-natured young dog to your family, Gabriel will be interviewing for starting this week.
In addition to our featured pet of the week, Gabriel, ACAR still has a number of young adult cats, a good group of adult cats and a growing number of older cats that are also seeking new loving families.

~ News ~ ...YOURSELF from page 7 Week ‘because we know that, unfortunately, schools, even our school, is not a place where individuals always feel comfortable being themselves,” said Assistant WJHS Principal Robert Griffin in introducing Mr. Baldwin. During his presentation, Baldwin, a mentor to over 150 civil rights school teams across Maine, showed a cartoon on bias.
“I believe the cartoon in Mr. Baldwin’s presentation showed students and staff that things, such as race and ethnicity, should not be dividing lines between us,” commented Griffin. “We can all learn to accept people as the individuals.” Baldwin also spoke on such topics as the development of the human brain in adolescence. He hammered home the importance of being authentic to students as they grow into adults. Towards the end of his
presentation, Baldwin asked the members of the Civil Rights Team to stand up and be recognized by their peers and school staff members. “I feel like this assembly went really well and our school will have a better understanding of the Civil Rights Project and what we’re trying to do to help,” said team member and seventh grade student Daisy Aromando. Another team member, fifth grader Kate Pinette,
added, “Well, I thought it was really cool because some people didn’t know what civil rights meant and Brandon Baldwin did an awesome job explaining it to everybody”. The team has two inschool advisors including assistant principal Griffin and guidance counselor Kristie Soucy. “I am truly energized by the students on the Civil Rights Team,” commented Soucy. “They are a positive and energetic group. The assembly fur-
thered our message as a team and has given us a jumping off point to continue this work in our school.” The Civil Rights Team at WJHS will meet twice a month. Some of those meetings will involve studying the school’s social climate and examining various student issues that may border on civil rights issues. Griffin indicated the group will also “plan events, See CIVIL page 24...

Her beloved grandchildren, Laura and Ethan Wilson of York, Maine and Joshua and Jacob Richie of Taylor, Texas, also survive Mary Lou. Mary Lou was a lifelong employee of the telephone company (NET, Nynex, Verizon) before retiring and moving to York with her husband, Bob, where she opened and operated The Apple Blossom B&B. She loved running her business, but her greatest passion was her grandchildren. She was blessed with granddaughter Laura and grandsons Joshua, Jacob and Ethan. A memorial mass will be held in Mary Lou’s honor at St. Mary of the Nativity, 1 Kent Street, Scituate Harbor, Massachusetts at 10 a.m. on May 13, 2014. They are the furthest thing from alone, but it very much feels like they are.” Soucy added, “Our audience was completely engaged throughout the entire assembly. Brandon [Baldwin] did such a beautiful job sharing the mes-
sage of being yourself and how hard that can be, especially as a student in Middle School.” ...FOOD from page 12 quently reduce a person’s risk of heart disease. SPORTS Berwick Academy Girls Basketball Wins Entry into NEPSAC SOUTH BERWICK The Berwick Girls basketball team at Berwick Academy played in the EIL tournament Saturday, February. 22 with mixed results. As the number #1 seed in the A bracket of the tourney, the Berwick team beat #4 seed Winsor in the semifinals 41 to 32 Maggie DuChene and Dominique St. Pierre both
scored 12 points After more than a threehour layoff between games, Berwick played a poor first half in the championship game and found itself down 24 to 9 at the break. An 11 to 1 run to open the second half closed that gap to 25 to 20 with seven minutes to go. But two consecutive shots upped the LCA lead to 11 points again. Berwick never seriously threat-
ened from there, losing 43 to 34. Dominique S. Pierre scored nine points in this game, while Maggie DuChene and Rebecca Siegel added eight points. Berwick is 18 to 6 on the season. After Saturday’s games the team learned it qualified to play in the NEPSAC for the second consecutive year. According to Berwick’s Brian Sanborne only eight of 33 teams make this cut. At press time the team was traveling to New Hampshire to compete against Kimball Union Academy for this tournament.
Sign up for Babe Ruth Baseball in South Berwick SOUTH BERWICK South Berwick’s Babe Ruth Baseball League will be taking registration for the 2014 season on Friday March 7 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, March 8 from 9 a.m. to noon at the town hall in South Berwick. Sign-ups are open to 13 through 15 year olds from South Berwick and Eliot. All 13 year olds must provide proof of age with a copy
of their birth certificates. Any 14- or 15-year-olds who have not previously played for South Berwick Babe Ruth must also provide a birth certificate. Applicants must be 13 on or before April 30, 2014 and no older than 15 on April 30, 2014. Registration fee is $95 on March 7 and 8. Later registration is $120. FMI: Contact Richard Raitt at 384-9281.
~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, My new Sony Vaio Pro 13 A does not have a CD slot, but the only version of Microsoft Office 2013 is in a CD form. Can I transfer the contents to a USB? I am afraid to open the $170 package and find I must activate the CD to find the product key. Is there a way around this? Bianca Dear Bianca, Yes, you can copy the contents of the Microsoft Office disk to a USB to install it on your computer. You might even find directions inside the package for downloading your version of Office from Microsoft. Many versions of Office these days are not even provided on a disk. The user must have or create an account with Microsoft, download the installation files from the website, and after filling out an online form get a product key. I hope you enjoy your new version of Office. If it includes OneNote, check it out. OneNote is my favorite part of Office! Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, What would you recommend I do to make a back up for all my PC data? I’m afraid if my PC ever goes to cyber heaven, I will be in hell. I downloaded Carbonite for the free trial. Now they want me to sign up for one of the plans. Should a time ever come for me to retrieve my back up, the site says it is easy to do myself. Is this cor-
rect? Richard Dear Richard, Actually, I think that Carbonite is one of the easiest back up and restore methods available. Once you install the program (which you already have since you used the 15 day free trial) you really don’t have to think about your backup any more. Carbonite automatically backs up your files as you make changes to them, or create new ones. You don’t have to remember how to do anything else. If you ever to want to recover your files, all you need to know is the user name and password you created with Carbonite. Then you just log in and retrieve your files. If you run into difficulty, you can either call the company for help, or have your local computer shop help you get your files back. Think about it this way: If you use Carbonite, your files are backed up, and you can get them back even if you need help to do it. If you don’t use Carbonite and your computer crashes, you won’t have the option of getting your files back with or without someone helping you. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I just needed to know the name of the eye saving program you mentioned you used. I am having problems with my eyes and am spending too long on my computer without taking breaks. My eyes get very tired, and the

rest of me too. My acupuncturist thinks my symptoms are caused by tension in my neck and eyestrain. That program you mentioned sounded like something that could help me. I’d appreciate any other ideas or suggestions. Thanks in advance, Donna Dear Donna, The program that I use to remind me to take breaks is called, Work Rave. You can find it at: http://www.workrave.org/ I use the reminders to not only give my eyes a break, but also to stretch my neck. I use the longer breaks to get up and walk away from my computer for a few minutes. Usually I make myself a cup of tea. I hope this helps! Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,
I’m using Vista Home premium, and McAfee Total Protection. Recently my preset weekly scan wouldn’t start. I was told I have low memory, that I need to have at least two to three RAM (to do the upgrades). I have gotten a Windows pop-up about low memory. McAfee told me I can add RAM for free.. I have no idea how or where to get free RAM. Of course I’m afraid to fry or blow up this machine. Buying a new computer is not an option right now... I appreciate your expertise. Jo Dear Jo, I can tell you how to upgrade your RAM, but it is not
free. In fact, I have never heard of a source of free RAM. RAM is a physical piece of computer hardware, something that you can hold in your hand. Before you go to the store and purchase some RAM, though, you need to do a little bit of research. You need to find out two things. One is what kind of RAM your computer uses, and the other is the maximum amount of RAM your computer can support. You can find this information on the computer manufacturer’s website, but an even easier way is to use the Crucial Memory Advisor located on my web site at: http://askthecomputerlady. com/questions/. You will find it in the right column half way See COMPUTER page 28...

Beaulieu made a presentation directed towards parents, explaining the importance of math and making their children comfortable and confident in math abilities. Beaulieu suggested ways in which parents, and other family members, can help children understand math concepts primarily through the use of “good questioning”. According to Beaulieu, children’s answers to questions such as “How do you know that?” or “Can you show me?” can not only be surprising but reveal a child’s thinking process. Knowing this process can enable parents to support their child at the appropriate developmental level. Attendees rotated in and out of math stations aptly named “Pizza Problem Puzzler,” “Games-Games-Games,” “Math Matters Mysteries” and “Greg Tang Challenges.” Each station was designed to provide opportunities for parents to ask questions, interact, and play mathematical activities with their children. In an interview, Beaulieu
indicated the importance of helping the youngest of students develop his or her critical thinking skills which can bring about confidence needed to tackle math problems. If they make a mistake, it is not failure, but an opportunity to learn. “It’s nothing bad and it is part of the learning cycle,” she said. At the end of the evening a raffle for a variety of math related board games was held. ...COMPUTER from page 25 down the page.
