This closure will restrict the southbound side of the bridge to two lanes. It will not be reopened to three lanes until this phase of the joint replacement work is complete. These lanes need to close to be able to work on the bridge joints. These traffic restrictions are also necessary for the safety of crews and the traveling public. It is hoped these lanes will be able to reopen as soon as this phase of the bridge joint replacements is complete, but these traffic restrictions could last through mid-May. First Parish Church Beach Clean Up YORK Calling all earth lovers, beach combers, families and individuals! First Parish Church’s Creation Care group is planning three upcoming beach cleanups at Long Sands Beach and welcome all who are willing and able to help. Despite the chill in the air, we are committed to protecting “our” beach, the shore wildlife, and the ocean, by cleaning up the debris that washes ashore. Cleanups are scheduled for Saturday, February 29 at 10 a.m.; Saturday, March 14 at 10 a.m.; and Saturday, March 28 at 10 a.m. In November, cleanup crews collected rope, fish nets, bottles, cans, cigarette butts, lobster traps and small articles of clothing – all things hazardous to wildlife if they remain on the

beach or are washed back out to sea. Join in for one or all the Saturdays at 10 a.m. at the Long Sands Bath House. Bring gloves, trash bags, rakes, or shovels, if you have them. Some tools may be available on site. For more information, call Nan Roberts at 978-877-6759.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Civil War Historian to Present on Maine Regiment KITTERY It had never happened before and it will never happen again: an entire regiment wins the medal of honor for doing almost nothing. It’s true. All 864 men of the 27th Maine Volunteers, many of them from Kittery, were ok’d by Civil War Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton to receive that coveted medal for bravery in 1863. On Thursday, March 5 at 6 p.m., Civil War historian Clay Feeter will present a lively, informative and visual talk about this wildly fascinating, little known story at Rice Public Library, in Kittery. For Feeter, a resident of York, the unveiling of this saga began last spring as he walked Kittery’s Oak Grove Cemetery. He has studied the “War of the Rebellion” for 30 years and sauntered through dozens of our area’s Civil War era graveyards, noting that “at least 30 percent of a typical New England cemetery holds men who died during that terrible four-year long, brother vs. brother conflict – yet Kittery’s volunteers were almost to a man not killed during the war.”

Feeter’s curiosity was especially piqued when he noticed lots of American flags adorning gravestones in the Oak Grove cemetery, yet almost every single veteran’s stone was inscribed with death dates into the late 1800s and early 1900s, decades after the war ended. “I kept shaking my head wondering why none of them perished during the war – very unusual – yes, I did eventually come across one or two men who were killed, but no others… why is that? Was Kittery one of the few towns, North or South, that lucked out during the Civil War?” Come learn how these local volunteers got the Medal

“Kids Can Grow” Youth Gardening Program YORK COUNTY Kids Can Grow provides children with a positive first experience with gardening and growing their own food, according to UMaine Extension Professor Frank Wertheim. The hope is that this early experience will inspire in young people a life-long interest in gardening, healthy eating and further exploration of natural resources related fields. The program, which has its roots in York County and is being adapted across Maine and in other parts of the U.S., is gaining in popularity as national interest

in youth gardening and local foods has grown. Applications are now available for children ages 7-12. Teaching sessions are held monthly on Saturdays from April 25 through October 3 at Crossroads United Methodist Church, 16 Grammar Road, Sanford. Master gardener volSee GROW page 11...

Wells Reserve Staff Garner National Awards WELLS Two staff members at the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve were recognized by peers from across the country at the annual meeting of research reserves held in South Carolina last month. Susan Bickford, stewardship coordinator for the Wells Reserve, was presented with the NERRS Impact Award by Erica Seiden, program manager of the reserve system. Seiden praised Bickford for her 20 years of work on geographic information systems, natural resource management, and disaster planning. She also cited Bickford’s expertise in applying cutting-edge technologies, such as unmanned aerial vehicles and soundscape acoustic devices, to research and conservation challenges in Maine and at other reserve sites. Jeremy Miller, research associate at the Wells Reserve, received the Technical Assistance Award. Miller has managed the weather, water quality, and nutrient data program in Wells for 15 years. Over that time, he has become the reserve system’s expert on the telemetry equipment that sends environmental data to orbiting satellites for near-real-time sharing via the world-wide web. Tramuto Releases Book in Italian Donato Tramuto, Founder and Chairman of the Mainebased non-profit, Tramuto Foundation, and the CEO of Tivity Health, Inc. (NASDAQ: TVTY), has published his 2016 book “Life’s Bulldozer Moments: How Adversity Leads to Success in Life and Business,” in Italy under the title, “Quando la vita ti ha asfaltato: come le avversità conducono al successo nella vita e nel lavoro.” The book, published in partnership with the Lucca Bank Foundation, reflects the challenges Tramuto has faced throughout his life that have inspired him to succeed against all odds, beginning with the loss of his hearing as a young boy which was only partially restored years later. Tramuto, who is also an Italian citizen and Co-Chair of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Italia, illustrates how adversity can

build character and highlights the events that instilled in him the drive to dedicate his life to making the world a more fair and just place for others. “In the healthcare industry, individuals are typically defined by their physical health or their mental health, but we often overlook story health – the experiences that define and transform our lives,” Tramuto said. “In my case, my hearing loss, the death of my sister-in-law in childbirth due to a medication error, the tragic loss of my brother and nephew, and the loss of my friends on 9/11, are moments that struck the very core of my being and challenged me to get back up and live with purpose for another day, I hope that this book will inspire others to share their ‘bulldozer moments’ by recognizing their story health matters.” For more information, visit www.tramutofoundation.com.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, What would you recommend I do to make a back up for all my PC data if my PC ever goes to Cyber Heaven? I downloaded Carbonite for the 15 day free trial, now they are after me, so to speak, wanting me to sign up for one of their plan offers. I think I would find that should a time ever come for me to retrieve my back up, the site says it is easy to do myself. Really? Richard Dear Richard, Actually, I think that Carbonite is one of the easiest backup and restore methods available. Once you install the program (which you already have since you used the 15 day free trial) you really don’t have to think about your backup any more. Carbonite automatically backs up your files as you make changes to them, or create new ones. You don’t have to remember how to do anything else. In the event that you need to recover your files, all you need to know is your user name and password that you created with Carbonite, and you can log in and retrieve your files. If you run into difficulty, you can either call them for help, or have your local computer shop help you get your files back.

Think about it this way, if you use Carbonite, your files are backed up, and you can get them back even if you need help to do so. If you don’t use Carbonite and your computer crashes, you won’t have the option of getting your files back with or without someone helping you. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, When viewing your many answers to questions, how can I go directly to a certain page, rather than scrolling to the bottom and selecting 2 pages ahead at a time? Thanks, Paul Dear Paul, I assume you are talking about the questions page on my website at: https://asktcl. com/ There are a couple of ways you can go directly to a certain page. First, there is a search box in the upper-right corner of the page. Just type what you are looking for in the search box and you will see a list of results. Below the search box, you will find a list that says, “Archives”. Just select any month you are interested in, and you will see a list of questions and answers for that month. Finally, there is a list of categories under the list of archives. (you will have to scroll down a ways to see them) All my questions are in categories,

so if you want to see questions about Windows 10, for example, just scroll down, click on the “Windows 10” category and you will get a list of all Windows 10 questions. Hope this helps, and thank you for visiting my website! Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have found I have a program called “speccy” on my computer and I am wondering if this is doing anything useful or if it is a piece of malware. I googled it up but don’t know which sites to trust. Thanks for all your great advice, Mary Dear Mary, You are in luck, it is not malware, Speccy is actually a useful little program from the makers of Ccleaner at www. piriform.com. Speccy is an advanced system information tool for your PC. It can tell you things like the type and amount of RAM on your system, also the speed and model of your CPU, motherboard, hard drive, etc. Two things that I really like about speccy is that it will also tell you the temperature of your components, which is great if you think there is something overheating in your computer, and it will tell you exactly when Windows was installed on your computer. My guess is that some-

one who was working on your computer installed it so that they could access some of this information. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How can I upgrade from Window 7 to Windows 10 Free? Windows 7 is no longer supported, and I need to go to Windows 10. Thanks, Art Dear Art, The short answer is that there is no longer any free upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. The free upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or 8 is the only time Microsoft has offered free operating system upgrades, and it was only available as a free upgrade until July 2016. Unfortunately, it is no longer available So, how can you upgrade to Windows 10? The best thing to do is first make sure your computer is in good shape with

some hardware diagnostics. Once you know the computer is in good working condition, you can then purchase an upgrade and install Windows 10. Your local computer shop is a good place to start, but if you are comfortable doing the upgrade yourself, you can always find an upgrade version of Windows 10 in stores or online at places like Amazon. Something to keep in mind is that by the time you have paid for diagnostics on your computer, purchased an upgrade for Windows 10, and paid to have someone do the upgrade, you are getting very close to the cost of just replacing the computer with a new one. Studies Show Yard Work is Good for You As you get outside this spring, have you ever considered how our green spaces contribute to our health? Studies show that green space and landscaping contribute to health, happiness, and intel-

lect. Living landscapes are an important part of the outdoor lifestyle that Americans enjoy, but the benefits go beyond the barbeque and backyard baseball. Green spaces are necessary for your health.

“The advantages of grass and landscaping surpass the usual physical benefits that result from outdoor activity,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO, Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI). “Nu-

merous studies have found that people who spend more time outside or are exposed to living landscapes are happier, healthier and smarter. As you get ready to get outside this spring with your lawn mower and other outdoor power equipment, it’s great to know being outside is good for you.” Getting dirty is actually good for you. Soil is the new Prozac, according to Dr. Christopher Lowry, a neuroscientist at the University of Bristol in England. Mycobacterium vaccae in soil mirrors the effect on neurons that Prozac provides. The bacterium stimulates serotonin production, which explains why people who spend time gardening, doing yard work, and have direct contact with soil feel more relaxed and happier. Children who are raised on farms in a “dirtier” environment than an urban setting not only have a stronger immune system but are also better able to manage social stress, according to the National Academy of Sciences. Living near living landscapes can improve your mental health. Researchers in England found that people moving to greener areas experienced an immediate improvement in mental

health that was sustained for at least three years after they moved. The study also showed that people relocating to a more developed area suffered a drop in mental health. Green spaces can make you healthier too. People who live within a half mile of green space (such parks, public gardens, and greenways) were found to have a lower incidence of fifteen diseases by Dutch researchers – including depression, anxiety, heart disease, diabetes, asthma and migraines. Studies show that tasks conducted under the calming influence of nature are performed better and with greater accuracy, yielding a higher quality result. Spending time in gardens, for instance, can improve memory performance See YARD page 15...

Health & Fitness March Named Maine Childhood Cancer Awareness Month AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills signed into law an Act to Make March Maine Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and immediately after signing the bill issued the first proclamation to raise awareness of child...YARD from page 14 and attention span by 20%. Living landscapes make you smarter. Children gain attention and working memory benefits when they are exposed to greenery, says a study led by Payam Dadvand of the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology in Barcelona, In addition, exposure to natural settings may be widely effective in reducing attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder symptoms in children. Research has also shown that being around plants helps you concentrate better at home and at work. A National Institute of Health study found that adults demonstrate significant cognitive gains after going on a nature walk. In addition, a Stanford University study found that walking in nature resulted in decreased anxiety, rumination, and negative affect, and produced cognitive benefits, such as increased working memory performance. Living landscapes help you heal faster. Multiple studies have discovered that plants in hospital recovery rooms or views of aesthetically-pleasing gardens help patients heal up to one day faster than those who are in more sterile or austere environments. Physicians are now prescribing time outdoors for some patients, according to recent reports. Park Rx America is a non-profit with a mission to encourage physicians to prescribe doses of nature. All of these benefits reinforce the importance of maintaining our yards, parks and other community green spaces. Trees, shrubs, grass, and flowering plants are integral to human health. Not only do they provide a place for kids and pets to play, they directly contribute to our mental and physical well-being. More information can be found by visiting www. turfmutt.com. hood cancer. The legislation, sponsored by Senator Lisa Keim (R-Oxford), establishes March of each year as Maine Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and requires the Governor to issue a proclamation inviting and urging the Maine people to observe the month. It passed the Legislature unanimously. “Cancer is an insidious and heartbreaking disease, especially when it touches the lives of children,” said Governor Janet Mills. “It is my hope that this designation will shine a light on its devastating impacts and demonstrate to Maine families that we stand with them in this fight. I thank Senator Keim and the dedicated families whose lives have been touched by this awful disease for their leadership in making today possible.” “This new law we official-

ly enact today is the result of the courageous dedication of a group of wonderful people who have been touched by childhood cancer,” said Senator Lisa Keim. “Recognizing the devastating impact of this disease on Maine families will benefit their work, and the work of all of those who seek to put an end to childhood cancer. By this act we hope to further their efforts and gratefully acknowledge their dedication.”

KENNEBUNK – Dr. William “Bill” G. Chigas, DMD of Kennebunk, formerly of Lowell, MA, died peacefully Monday morning, February 10, 2020, at York Hospital following a period of failing health. Bill was born on November 14, 1933, in Lowell, MA, the youngest of three sons born to Greek immigrant parents Dr. George V. and Aristea Rhangos Chigas. Bill is a graduate of Lowell High School, where he was active in the Boy Scouts and played on the football team. He continued his education at Tufts University and earned his DMD from Tufts Dental School in 1959. Upon his graduation, he joined the US Army, serving as a captain in the Dental Corps in Germany. He always considered his three-year tour in Germany as one of the best periods of his life. After returning from Europe, he started a successful dental practice in Lowell and later moved to Chelmsford, where he stayed for 30 years

until his retirement in 1991. He and Margaret, his wife of 34 years, began their retirement in Moody in the early 1990s. They lived briefly in Savannah, GA, before returning to Wells and eventually making their home in Kennebunk. A longtime member of Rotary, he initially joined the Lowell and Chelmsford Rotary Clubs and later served as president of the Wells Rotary Club. He was previously a member of Savannah South Rotary and at the time of his death Kennebunk Rotary Club. Bill was a rare member that attained a 50year perfect attendance record. In retirement, Bill enjoyed woodworking and has created many pieces of fine furniture over the years. He loved classical music and was a patron of the Portland Symphony Orchestra. He is survived by his wife Margaret Chigas of Kennebunk, two sons George Chigas of Acton, MA, and Charles Chigas of New York, NY, two step-daughters Katie

Ramage of Escondido, CA, and Barbi Ramage of Ashville, NC, as well as four grandchildren; John and Arthur (George’s children); and, Olivia and Sebastian (Charles’ children), as well as several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours were held Wednesday, February 12 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. A funeral mass was held on Thursday, February 13, at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 186 Bradley St., Saco. Interment will be in Westwood Cemetery, Lowell, MA, at a future date. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Rotary Foundation C/O Kennebunk Rotary Club, PO Box 888 Kennebunk, ME, 04043 or https://my.rotary.org/ en/donate in Bill’s memory. ~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Meet Tinkerbell. She is a lovely brown tiger kitty with a well-rounded personality. In her prior home she was accustomed to living with other cats, dogs and children. This past social experience means she will likely adjust easily to your home life. Tinkerbell had three kittens who were recently adopted. Her foster mom says Tinkerbell is lonely, and a new home would be the best remedy for her. Tinkerbell is a total sweetie, very friendly, loves attention, loves her toys and loves to be pet. She can sometimes get overexcited in play and jump up onto your shoulder. Like many young kitties, she sometimes might gently

nip you if she’s overstimulated during play time. This makes her a better candidate for families with older children, age eight or older. This beautiful young lady will be a fantastic member of a loving family. If you’d like to meet her, give Leonore a call at 207-985-3227.

We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

He spent the next 26 years in the Dorchester and Jamaica Plain neighborhoods of Boston, retiring to his beloved Maine. ~ News ~ More Students Attended Maine’s Community Colleges This Past Fall STATEWIDE The numbers are in and final fall enrollment at Maine’s community colleges is up 4.2% from last year. The enrollment increase is in sharp contrast to a nationwide trend of declining enrollments at two-year public colleges over the last several years. Headcount at the seven colleges is 17,327 students, compared to 16,622 last year, according to the ...PARKS from page 27 Online at www.campwithme. com (24-7); By calling 800-3321501 or 207-624-9950 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday - Friday; By mailing reservations to: Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, Bureau of Parks and Lands, ATTN.: Reservations, 22 SHS, Augusta, ME 04333; By dropping off completed reservation forms at the Harlow Building located at 18 Elkins Lane, Augusta.

official tally made on October 15. The greatest gain was at SMCC, which is up 8.9% with 6,384 students. The colleges are also seeing a big increase in enrollment in certain high-demand programs. The number of students studying for careers in the health professions is up 19% over last year. Enrollment in pre-engineering and engineering technology programs is up 6%. “This kind of growth is gratifying to see, because we are constantly focused on meeting the needs of today’s students by offering an affordable, accessible, quality education in a wide range of fields,” said System President David Daigler. In recent years, Maine’s community colleges have launched multiple initiatives aimed at attracting and retaining students, from adding new, popular courses and programs to increasing student support services. Those efforts, along with new recruitment

and marketing campaigns, contributed to the increase in enrollment. “Our primary mission is to provide an education to students that meets the economic needs of the state,” Daigler said. “We are constantly assessing our programs to ensure we’re offering targeted, relevant programs so graduates have the skills to step right into the jobs available now, in their communities and across the state.” The enrollment increase is in sharp contrast to a nationwide trend of declining enrollments at two-year public colleges over the last several years. As of October 15 the systemwide head-count is up an additional 705 students from the same date a year ago. Five colleges report increases, the largest of which is at Southern Maine Community College, up 8.9% with 6,384 students enrolled compared to 5,862 last year at this time.

Fall enrollment figures do not include students enrolled in non-credit courses, continuing education or short-term job training. In the last year, the number of trainees who completed shortterm training programs funded by the MCCS Maine Quality Centers (MQC) program increased about 80% to 1,602, up from 897 in the previous year. MQC works with Maine employers to provide customized training that is free to trainees and is focused on strengthening the skills of the Maine workforce. The high demand for both degree programs and short-term training at Maine’s community colleges is particularly noteworthy given the state’s record low unemployment, aging demographics and widespread workforce shortages. Community college enrollment has historically been tied to the economy, going up during periods of high unemployment and declining when jobs are plentiful.
