Theater Fire Prompts Venue Change: Berwick academy to Stage ‘les Misérables’ at Marshwood High SOuTH BerWICK – Berwick Academy is thrilled to announce that the Upper School production of the timeless classic “Les Misérables” will be staged on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Marshwood High School. Curtain time is 7 p.m. Because of a fire that recently broke out in the Patricia Baldwin Whipple Arts Center Theater on the campus of Berwick Academy, the show, which is the school’s annual major theatrical production, was forced to find a new home. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of neighboring school Marshwood High, the show will go on as planned. Head of School Greg Sch-

neider commented, “It is hard to express the amount of gratitude we all feel to Marshwood
High School and Principal Paul Mehlhorn. Their willingness to adapt, adjust, and accommo-
date their schedule to be good neighbors is like nothing I have ever seen as a school leader.
“Clearly, Berwick Academy will be looking for ways to repay this tremendous gesture in months and years to come. As Head of School, there are rare moments when I believe we have to be willing to think outside of the box to create remarkable opportunities for young people. “That said, I have fallen back upon my most trusted mantra in this challenging circumstance: do what is in the best interest of the students. I believe that we have done our best to find that outcome in this case, and that we will all be witness to a very special performance.” See LES MIS page 4...

WellS – U.S. Sen. Susan Collins announced this week that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers intends to allocate $3.5 million in federal funding to complete the full dredging of Wells Harbor this fall during the fall/winter dredge availability 2013-2014 window. Since Wells Harbor sustained damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy, it was eligible for funding provided in the Supplemental Appropriations Act, which was signed into law on Jan. 29. The Army Corps is currently moving ahead with completing the coordination and developing plans and specifications for the project. “The nation’s small ports and harbors play an important role in local economies, and there is an ongoing need to address the maintenance backlog to ensure they are properly maintained and can continue to provide economic benefit locally, regionally, and nationally,” said Collins. “This is welcome news for the Town of Wells and will help provide economic benefits for the businesses that rely on the

According to town officials, during astronomical high tides, many of the slips in the harbor are no longer accessible. The harbor has incrementally been filling in with sand, reducing the 150 moorings to 86 and increasing navigational safety problems. ~ News ~ Winter Farmers Market at Kennebunk elementary School KeNNeBuNK – Kennebunk Elementary School will host a Winter Farmers Market for the school community on Wednesday, March 6, from 10:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will be open to the general public starting at 12:30 p.m. The Farmers Market, which is part of a larger Wellness Fair at the school, seeks to connect children and families with local foods, even during the cold winter season. Twenty producers and growers from the area will have foods available for purchase at the market. These include Pullen Manor Farm, Redneck Ridge Farm, Casco Bay Butter, Sunset Farm Organics, and Maine Shellfish Co. who will be bringing live lobsters for kids to see. The Winter Farmers Market was held for the first time last March, and this year several new farmers – including the Bison Project, Trailside Herbs, Rococo Artisan Ice Cream, Guzman’s Salsa, The Soup Guy, Trailside Herbs, Eastern River Cattle Company, and VitaminSea Seaweed – will be participating. Rococo is promising a creative ice cream flavor “to showcase the veggie and fruit focus” of the day. The Farmers Market will also help visitors start planning for the spring gardening season. Frinklepod Farm in Arundel will offer seeds for sale, as well as shares in its Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm. Master Gardeners from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension program will answer gardening questions and help kids plant seeds to take home. A variety of children’s activities – including face painting, a farm-themed scavenger hunt, crafts, an essay contest for fourthgraders, and face painting – are also planned.
Admission and children’s activities are free. Kennebunk
Elementary School is located at 177 Alewive Road. The event is organized by the Kennebunk Elementary PTA’s Nutrition Committee. For more information, call 294-2961.

Currently, four real estate professionals have contributed to the OWN campaign, including: Greg Gosselin, Gosselin Realty Group; Wanda Syphers, Carey & Giampa Realtors; Melissa Lesniak, Keller Williams Coastal Realty, The Lesniak Home Team; and Susan DeQuattro Arrand, Coldwell Banker Yorke Realty. Fair Tide Executive Director Mary Oplinger said one Realtor also helped a resident find a suitable apartment with a landlord willing to take a Housing Choice voucher. “Individually and collectively, these Realtors have made a tremendous difference in the lives of our residents,” said Oplinger, who noted the Realtors have also agreed to serve as March Thrift Store Business Partner. “They are very active in the Fair Tide community— they are amazing.” Proceeds from the Thrift Store, open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and located at 15 State Road in Kittery, directly support the Fair Tide program. the estimated $3.5 million federally funded project. The dredge sand will be placed on Wells and Drakes Island beaches as beach nourishment projects which have eroded over the decade since the last full dredge. This is a huge project for the town of Wells which is tourism based, officials said. “We are grateful to our delegations and Army Corps of Engineers efforts,” stated Robert Foley, chairman of the Board of Selectmen. This project has been five years in the making with an incredible amount of work behind the scenes in securing dredge and beach nourishment permits. “Countless hours have been put in by a large number of people to make this happen” Foley stated. The town will need to remove its harbor infrastructure to make ready for the dredge later this summer and fall. That alone is a gigantic project in itself said Harbor Master Chris Mayo, noting the infrastructure will be removed and then reinstalled. On average, about 6 feet of sand cover mooring blocks and tackle. The Weekly

business & finance sis bank supports saco River Theatre: $2,500 Donation continues Yearly Tradition
Bar MIllS – In what has become a yearly tradition, SIS Bank recently presented the Saco River Theatre with a donation of $2,500. This is the fifth year in a row that SIS has made a donation to support the organization’s theatrical and artistic presentations. “Giving back to the community is one of the most important aspects of doing business, and as a mutual savings bank we take that responsibility especially seriously,” said Mark Mickeriz, president and CEO of SIS. “Saco River Theatre is a mainstay in the region that provides a wonderful cultural experience, and we enjoy helping make that happen.” The Saco River Theatre, which serves as a non-profit community center with an emphasis on the arts, is the performance home of The Originals, a professional theater group
whose upcoming productions include “Maiden’s Progeny: An Afternoon with Mary Cassat,” “Adrift in Macao,” and Steven Martin-adapted “The Underpants.” Additionally, the theater regularly plays host to musical acts. Health & Fitness Elderly at Risk in Winter Weather
As more winter storms threaten, local senior care experts are encouraging families to help their senior loved ones and neighbors prepare for the possibility of heavy snow, ice and frigid temperatures. The extreme temperatures and snow of winter can be especially dangerous for older adults. The elderly and those with heart disease are at special risk, according to the American Heart Association. “As people age, their ability to maintain a normal internal body temperature often decreases,” said Jeff Huber, president of Home Instead, Inc., franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care® fran-
chise network. “Because elderly people seem to be relatively insensitive to moderately cold conditions, they can suffer hypothermia without knowing they’re in danger.” The following tips, from the local Home Instead Senior Care® office, will help you safeguard a senior loved one or neighbor. Fill the cupboard. Help your senior stock the staples and groceries they’ll need in the event of a large snowstorm or cold spell. Maximize energy. Encourage your senior to make sure they have adequate insulation and to check and clean the fireplace and furnace. Replace furnace filters
monthly. Minimize drafts. Help your senior fill old socks with sand and use them in drafty windowsills and door jams. Weather-strip around windows and doors. Keep doors closed to unused rooms and close curtains at night. Stay toasty. Advise your senior to add an extra blanket to the bed and warm the bed in advance with a hot water bottle. Never use electric blankets. A senior may not be able to operate the controls if the temperature needs to be adjusted in the night. dress warmly. A senior’s circulation decreases with age. Encourage your senior to wear an extra sweater or sweatshirt,
and sweat pants during the winter. Monitor the thermostat. Check with your senior to make sure that they’re keeping the thermostat above 65 degrees during the cold weather. Older adults are particularly susceptible to hypothermia, which can develop over a few days and weeks even in the mildly cool indoor temperatures of 60 to 65 degrees. Beware of budget problems. Make sure your senior isn’t trying to save money by keeping the thermostat down. Many communities have energy assistance programs for low- and fixed-income households. avoid slips. Make sure your senior has made arrangements to have driveways and
walkways cleaned. Salt and sand should be available to speed melting. Stay in touch. Check on your neighbor or loved one frequently during periods of cold and snowy weather. Build a network. You can’t always be around to help your elderly loved one. Call on neighbors, family and church members to help or contact your local Home Instead Senior Care office. For more information about senior and caregiver well-being, please visit www. caregiverstress.com. Health & Fitness Preventing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in the Workplace
The incidence of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is higher in office settings than most other professions. CTS occurs when the median nerve in the wrist is compressed by inflamed finger tendons that pass through the tunnel. Help prevent CTS by
following these guidelines: The height of the keyboard should allow wrists to be in a neutral or straight position. Use a padded wrist rest in front of the keyboard so that your wrists can rest comfortably when not actively typing. Stop typing every 30 min-
utes and stretch your hands and wrists. Spread your fingers wide and then ball them into a gentle fist. Repeat five times. Rotate your forearms palm up, then palm down five times. These exercises will help to increase circulation and reduce muscle fatigue.
Starting a family?
Get to know the team that delivers at York Hospital’s next...
If you spend much time on the telephone, you need to switch to a headset. The headset will help to alleviate neck and upper back strain which decreases the circulation into the arms which can be a contributing factor in the development CTS. When performing repetitive gripping activities, make every effort to keep your wrist straight. When the wrist is kept straight, this position produces the least amount of pressure in the carpal tunnel. Stop every 30 minutes and stretch your fingers and wrist backwards five to 10 times to maintain
flexibility. If you have numbness and tingling in the hands, primarily in the thumb, index, and/ or long fingers or the presence of an electric-like shock in your hands, you may have CTS. Ask your doctor for a referral to a hand therapist and get proper treatment. A minor injury to the hand or arm can become a serious long-term disability if neglected. Submitted by Cindy Lavigne, a certified hand therapist at ProCare Physical Therapy and Hand Center, info@procarepthand.com.

It is recommended to take 500 mg of calcium and 250 mg of magnesium once per day, later in the evening. This can be done after dinner or a few hours before going to bed for best results. How to Help Stenosis and Disc Pain
Once and for All... Without Drugs, Shots, Surgery or even Chiropractic Now, in Kittery, ME, one doctor is helping local residents with back pain live more active, pain-free lives. Do You Have Any of the Following Conditions? • Stenosis • Low back pain • Tendonitis
• Disc pain • Neck pain • Arthritis pain
Living with back pain can feel like a crippling experience. Let’s face it, your back isn’t as young as it used to be, and playing with the kids or grand-kids isn’t any easier either. Maybe your back pain keeps you from walking short distances or playing golf like you used to. Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally, but physically feeling held back from life because your back hurts, and the pain just won’t go away! My name is Dr. Jeff Donatello, owner of York Chiropractic Health Center. Since we opened 18 years ago, we’ve seen hundreds of people with back problems leave the office pain free. If you’re suffering from these conditions, a new breakthrough in medical technology may completely eliminate your pain and help restore normal function to your back.
Finally, You Have an Option Other Than Drugs or Surgery
Using a K-laser (Class 4 laser) is an outpatient, nonsurgical procedure, often used in physical therapy and sports medicine to accelerate the healing process. It offers a noninvasive treatment to promote healing for those who suffer from pain in muscles, nerves, and joints, like that associated with chronic back pain. This same laser is used by professional sports teams including the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Bengals.
It Promotes Rapid Healing of the Injured Tissues
This pain-free, nonsurgical approach works by stimulating the body’s natural healing process, providing pain relief and reducing injury damage. This leading-edge technology has an impressive success rate of returning patients to work, sports and competitive activities, as well as everyday life. Patients treated with the K-laser often show a higher level of function, both during and after the treatment period. The therapeutic laser provides a tremendous alternative for those facing surgery.
Could This Noninvasive, Natural Treatment Be the Answer to Your Back Pain?

Treat Sleeplessness with Vitamins and Supplements Millions of people around the world battle insomnia. Sleeplessness may be a byproduct of different conditions, and treatment may depend on the underlying cause of the insomnia. Many people find using allnatural supplement therapy is enough to ward off sleeplessness. Insomnia is more prevalent among elderly individuals and women. Elderly people are more likely than younger ones to have medical conditions that may cause pain at night or to take medication that can interfere with a good night’s rest. Some research suggests that men lose about 80 percent of their deep sleep between the ages of 16 and 50. For women, hormonal events often trigger sleeplessness. These can include menstruation, pregnancy and menopause. Individuals who are over the age of 50 may be more prone to anxiety, grief and depression which can cause sleeplessness. Although there are many different medications, be it prescription medications or overthe-counter drugs, to alleviate symptoms of sleeplessness, some people prefer to not take these medications due to the risk of dependency or the side effects associated with them. Hypnotics, which include the brand name Ambien, have been linked to morning drowsiness and even temporary amnesia, where individuals walk around, drive or even cook while under the medication and are unaware of what they are doing. Those who are looking for more natural approaches can use the following vitamins and minerals in conjunction with good sleep hygiene. Calcium and magnesium combination: Calcium and magnesium have been shown to relax the central nervous system, helping the body drift into sleep. According to Dr. William Sears, calcium helps the brain use the amino acid tryptophan to man-

You’ll see everything first hand to find out if this amazing treatment will be your pain solution – like it has been for so many other patients. The first 25 callers can get everything I’ve listed here for only $39. The normal price for this type of evaluation is $250, so you’re saving a considerable amount by taking me up on this offer. Remember what it was like before you had back problems, when you were pain free and could enjoy everything life had to offer. It can be that way again.
Here’s What to Do Now
Due to the expected demand for this special offer, I urge you to call us at York Chiropractic Health Center at once at 207-4389339 so we can get started with your consultation and exam as soon as possible.
Yours in Health, Dr. Jeff Donatello, D.C. P.S. Now you might be wondering...
Is This Safe? Are There Any Side Effects?
The FDA has cleared the K-laser as safe. Their only warning: Don’t shine it in your eyes. Of course, at our office, the laser is never anywhere near your eyes and we’ll give you a comfortable pair of goggles for your safety. Don’t wait and let your back problems get worse, disabling you for life.
Take me up on my offer and call today! 207-438-9339
Our Patients Say It Best
“I work for TSA and have to travel a lot. I went to two chiropractors and they didn’t help. In fact, Dr. Donatello’s chiropractic care didn’t help until we added the laser to my treatments. When we did this, my pain went away, the tension disappeared and I could travel on a plane for 8 hours without problems. I have not been able to do that in years.” ~ Brian H., Kittery Point, Maine

SMMC PrimeCare Cardiologists Receive “Best” Rating
SMMC PrimeCare Cardiologists in Biddeford have received a “Best” rating for cardiac care from The Maine Health Management Coalition. Clockwise from left: Dr. Shabbir Reza, Dr. Paul Meadows, Dr. Howard Sherman, Dr. Edward Quinlan, III, and Jill Gagne, nurse practitioner. (courtesy photo)
BIDDEFORD – The PrimeCare Physicians Cardiology group at Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) recently received the highest rating for cardiac care from The Maine Health Management Coalition. The team of four physicians and one nurse practitioner has also been accredited for heart and stroke care by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and rated Level III for cardiac care by Bridges to Excellence, their highest ranking. “SMMC’s PrimeCare Cardiologists are an experienced team with an uncompromising commitment to providing compassionate, quality care,” said Vice President of Quality and Patient Safety Dr.
Nate Wilson. “Receiving a ‘Best’ rating from The Maine Health Management Coalition assures our cardiac patients that they are getting the best treatment.” Fellowship trained cardiologists Dr. Paul Meadows, Dr. Edward Quinlan III, Dr. Shabbir Reza, Dr. Howard Sherman, and Nurse Practitioner Jill Gagne pro-
vide a full range of diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic treatments for heart and stroke patients. SMMC PrimeCare Cardiology is located at 9 Healthcare Drive in Biddeford. For more information about the quality designations visit: www.ncqa.org, www.hci3.org, or www.mehmc. org.
...SLEEP from page 13 cursor to serotonin. In several double-blind clinical studies, 5-HTP decreased the time required to get to sleep and to decrease the number of awakenings, according to HolisticOnline. It is recommended to take 100 to 300 mg, around 45 minutes before retiring for bed. Melatonin: Although melatonin is the go-to supplement for sleeplessness because of its direct relationship with sleep onset and circadian rhythm in the body, some research indicates that melatonin supplementation may only be effective for those who are deficient in this hormone. However, it may be effective for the elderly person who naturally produces less melatonin as he or she ages. A report titled, “Melatonin in elderly patients with insomnia: A systematic review,” found there is sufficient evidence that low doses of
melatonin improve initial sleep quality in selected elderly insomniacs. Melatonin doses ranged from 0.5 mg to 6 mg, and most participants took a single dose 30 to 120 minutes before bedtime. However, larger, randomized controlled trials with less strict inclusion criteria are necessary to yield evidence of effectiveness in geriatric patients who suffer from insomnia before widespread use can be advocated. Sleeplessness is something that can cause anything from mere annoyance to a long-term health problem. Older adults who are more prone to insomnia can consider a number of natural remedies to help get a better night’s rest. This article was provided by MetroCreative. ~ ask The Computer lady ~ dear Computer lady, This is actually a multipart question. An acquaintance purchased a used computer with Windows XP and found out later that the My Computer icon is missing. This person asked me for help, but I know almost nothing about XP so I can’t help. My question is where the My Computer files actually live. What is the path? I do not see it under that name when I view hidden items in Windows Explorer (my OS is ME). His question is how does he get it back? Will he need to reinstall Windows XP? Luckily, he did get the restore disks with the computer. Sincerely, Jeanene dear Jeanene, I can tell how to put “My Computer” on the Start Menu
in XP, but I am not sure I can answer your question about where the files actually live. The “My Computer” icon is not a shortcut, but a windows system icon. In Windows XP, you can have the “My Computer” Icon show up on your “Start” menu this way: 1. Right click on the “Start” button and click on “Properties” from the menu that appears. This will bring up the “Start Menu Properties” window. 2. Make sure the top “Start Menu” is selected, not the “Classic Start Menu” option, and click the “Customize...” button. This will bring you to the “Customize Start Menu” window. 3. Click on the “Advanced” tab and look for the list of Start Menu Items. When you scroll
down the list, you will see “My Computer” with several options beneath it. Click on “Display as a link” to select it, and click “OK” twice to save your settings. If you want the “My Computer” icon on your desktop too, follow these directions: 1. Right click on a blank spot on your desktop and click “Properties.” 2. In the “Display Properties” window, click the “Desktop” tab and then click the button near the bottom that says “Customize Desktop.” 3. Click on the “General” tab and in the top section where it says “Desktop Icons” place a check mark in front of “My Computer.” Click “OK” twice to save your settings. I record my daily weight on a yearly datebook calendar. I have been manually listing my weight for the last six years. I would like to use a computer calendar to list current weight but still have the record of the prior years. At the end of the year, I would like to be able to transfer the previous years to the current calendar and then continuing adding the daily weight. Is this possible? If so, how do I begin to list numbers only and be able to transfer to current year? If not possible, what, if any alternatives, can you suggest? 2007. Carolann dear Carolann, I don’t know if doing this on a calendar program is possible, but I think I would do this in an Excel spreadsheet. Just open Excel, create a new spreadsheet. In the first column, list dates (without the year) January 1, January 2, and so on. At the top of the second column, enter the year, then, in that column, enter your weight next to the date. Each column would be a year, and each row, would be a date. For example, the first row would be your weight on January 1. This way, you just look across the row to see your weight on January 1 each year. At the end of each year, go back to the top of your spreadsheet, and start a new year in the next column. If you don’t have Excel on your computer, you can always create the same spreadsheet in the free version of Office at www.openoffice.org. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? dancing and colorful costumes. The evening traditionally concludes with the showing of an Irish film, this year featuring the famous Riverdance group performing at Radio City Music Hall. The Stillson School of Irish Dance is one of the gems of Maine’s artistic community. Its founder and director, Carlene Moran Stillson (ADCRG/ TCRG, accredited by An Coimisiun in Dublin, Ireland, and a member of the Irish Dancing Teachers’ Association of North America and the New England Region teaching organizations) began her dancing career at age 4 studying under the direction of her aunt at the Lenihan School of Irish Dance in New Haven, Conn. She has competed in the New England Regional, North American, and World Championships. Stillson started her school 20 years ago. It is the only certified school of Irish dancing in
the state of Maine. The school’s dancers compete all over New England and place in the New England Regional Irish Dancing Championship annually. Dancers have placed in the North American Irish Dance Championships, as well as competing in the All Ireland Championships. Students of the school have performed with famous Celtic performers such as Solas, Cherish the Ladies, Trinity Dance Company, Liz Carroll, Billy McComiskey and Mick Moloney, and Eileen Ivers. Throughout the evening, as the dancers change from one costume into another, Stillson tells the history of the costumes and dances and the awards her dancers have attained. Following the dance presentation, the film “Riverdance: Live from New York City” will be shown on a full wall-size screen using quality projection equipment provided to OPA by Kennebunk Savings Bank.

WellS – If you’re looking to volunteer some mornings, our morning caregiver team sure could use your help. We try to have four caregivers each morning to share the workload but many times we’re shorthanded. Help feed kitties, clean litter boxes, clean and sanitize rooms, sweep and mop. Of course you get to do this with the kitties watching you. Sometimes they’ll give you a hand with the mop, and lie on your back when you bend over. That’s just because they love you and want you to know it. Please call Joanie at 646-4981. Our new Maverick Mondays and Thursdays are catching on. Our smart kitties now know when someone walks into their room it’s party time. They’re getting accustomed to companionship and affection from new and old friends. So come on down any Monday and Thursday 5 to 7 p.m. Sometimes a family must part with a kitty they love very much. Times like this are very hard on both family and animal. Many cats surrendered by their owners grieve for their loss and sometimes stop eating. So it makes sense to match up these kitties with similar families. Tigger is one such kitty who needs a new home. It’s heartbreaking because this handsome Maine Coon kitty already has a great home, but one of the children has become very allergic to him. So sadly, this 2-year-old must find a new home. Hopefully, one that’s similar so he doesn’t get depressed having to move. Tigger is a great family cat. He loves kids, dogs and people. Like all Safe Haven kitties, he is indoor-only and enjoys playing with his toys and family. Tigger also loves playing with water. He actually tries to get in the tub with the children! He loves

to sleep with his human mom and dad every night. Tigger is neutered, up-to-date on all his shots, and the only special care he requires is Science Diet dry cat food, because his tummy is sometimes sensitive. If you love Maine Coon kitties, help this family by adopting Tigger. Please call 229-8314 for more information. George George is as handsome as can be and very low key. He likes to take things slow and enjoys an easy-going environment. This 3-year-old gets along well with everyone he meets. George is very well-mannered and gentle. He would love to share his new home with other pets, and respectful people of all ages. If a true gentleman is what you are looking for, George may be just the boy for you. Bella Bella is a 3-year-old cat looking for a new home. Bella has tested positive for feline leukemia, so she can’t share a home with other cats. As the name implies, it’s only a concern for other felines. Dogs, people, rabbits, hamsters, parrots, monkeys are all safe around her. Bella is a sweetheart of a cat who just enjoys doing all the usual cat things. NOrTH BerWICK – Meet Brody… This handsome guy is a one-year-old chocolate lab. Brody had never seen snow, but like a true Mainer, he loves the fluffy white stuff, chasing snowballs and making doggie angels in the fresh fallen snow cover. Brody is house trained, and his foster parents indicate he is not a barker. Brody will do well with children of all ages, all cats and he just loves other dogs. Brody came to ACAR as part of a convoy of dogs and cats, all rescued from a very high-kill southern shelter. All northbound hounds pulled from these highkill shelters are quarantined for two weeks before transport. All rescued pets come current on all necessary vaccinations, are neutered and have been tested for
tion to practically any home. To see how great she is for yourself, and learn more about her condition, stop on by the shelter today to meet Bella. Murphy Twenty-nine years old. A milestone that isn’t often hit by many domestic animals, but Murphy is just that. Yes, this handsome cockatiel is 29 years old. Amazing, isn’t it? Murphy has lived a long, fulfilling life and now he’d like to find a comfortable home he can retire in. As you might expect, he’s rather laid-back and doesn’t cause a great deal of commotion. Give him a cozy habitat, some treats, a couple of toys, and he’ll be right at home. If you’d like a mature, noble, handsome feathered companion, then stop on in today to meet Murphy. Lawrence “Larry” Cato, 63 WELLS – Lawrence Michael Cato, 63, of 102 Stephen Eaton Way, Wells, died Feb. 18 after a long illness. Larry, a Vietnam veteran, served as a U.S Marine. Larry believed that serving his country was a very proud time in his life. Larry grew up in Salem, Mass., before enlisting in the Marine Corps at the age of 18. After his discharge, Larry spent time traveling and exploring the country. He worked several jobs after settling again in Salem, Mass., to raise his son. Larry’s passion for music was evident as he taught himself to play the guitar and also wrote lyrics for many of his songs. He was very proficient in his music abilities and everyone who was blessed with being part of his musical world enjoyed what he offered musically. Humor, animals and music were his three passions and greatest joys of life, he would often say. Larry settled in Wells, with his life partner and best friend, Lisa Helen Peters. Larry was predeceased by his mother, Rosemary (Mellow) Crawford, and is survived by a son, Larry Cempellin, and a young grandson, Mark; his beloved Auntie Alice Kingston; a sister, Rosemary (Chicki) Foley, and her husband, Frank; Cindy and Dean Hennessy; his brother, Christy Crawford; and his cousin, Jack Kingston, with whom he remained close through the years.

She graduated from Lynn English High School. During her early years she studied clarinet and saxophone. In 1945, Ms. Hallam received a bachelor of science degree in education from Massachusetts College of Art and in that year she received a position at Lasell Junior College, Auburndale, where she was chairman of the art department until 1949. In 1948 she attended Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Mich. In 1953 she received her master of fine arts degree at Syracuse University. From 1949 to 1962, Ms. Hallam was professor at the Massachusetts College of Art where she taught painting, drawing and design. She also introduced and taught the first courses in photography and theater arts. On Saturdays she supervised the Saturday Morning High School Art Classes. An avid photographer, Ms. Hallam traveled to Europe and compiled many illustrated lectures on art subjects which she gave throughout the country. In the early ’50s she pioneered and researched the use of Polyvinyl Acetate as a painting medium, now used extensively internationally and called “acrylic.” She exhibited and demonstrated its use throughout the East. Known for her larger-thanlife airbrushed flowered canvases, she had 45 solo exhibitions in mu-
seums and galleries and 280 group shows. Her work is in the permanent collections of many museums and corporations and in private collections in the U.S., Canada, France, Belgium and Switzerland. An illustrated book, “Beverly Hallam: An Odyssey in American Art” by Carl Little, (Pub. Walesback Books, Washington) depicts her life and work. The Union of Maine Visual Artists, as part of the Maine Masters Project, featured her brilliant career on film in “Beverly Hallam: Artist as Innovator.” No service. Private burial will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn, Mass. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, P.O. Box 815, Ogunquit, ME 03907.

SPORTS York Indoor Track Team Takes State Title
Tom Reid, senior captain of the York High School winter indoor track team and state champion in the long jump.
By Larry Favinger Contributing Writer YOrK – Winning an interscholastic state championship at any level in any state is something of which the school and the athletes can be justly proud. To accomplish that feat two years in a row is an even more difficult task, yet that is just what the boys’ winter indoor track team at York High School has done. The Wildcats overcame 26 teams in gaining the Class B state title in the Merrill Gym at Bates College in Lewiston last weekend. The champions piled up a total of 76 points to run away from the field. “It was a total team effort to win our second state title, veteran Coach Ted Hutch said
recently. “Ten athletes scored to get our total points.” Rounding out the top six finishers at the meet were Foxcroft Academy (46), Waterville (44), Falmouth (42), Ellsworth (30), and Wells (29). “We expected and got our big points from (Tom) Reid, (Joe) Vogel and (Josh) Brooks” Hutch said. “Then we got some surprise points from (Nick) Eaton and (Kyle) Morrison in the mile, (Nick) Moulton in the high jump and the 4x800 relay team of (Brandon) LeBlanc, (Schaefer) Rees, (Tony) Ruest and (Tucker) Corbett.” Reid finished first in the long jump, second in the triple jump and second in the 55meter hurdles, Eaton had a third in the mile, Vogel was third in the long jump and fourth in the

800 meters, Brooks was fourth in the 200, Morrison was sixth in the mile and high jump and Corbett was sixth in the 800. The 4x200 relay took fourth and it included Brooks, Bridges, Sean Kelly, and Corbett. Sometimes things work out above expectations to give a team a boost. “That relay was not supposed to score,” Hutch said,
“but they ended up stealing it and giving us 10 points we did not expect.” And it gave the Wildcats a quick 10 points and the lead. “It was a good way to start the meet and we never looked back,” Hutch said. Wells High School was led by senior Denzel Tomaszewski who won the 55-meter dash in See CHAMPS page 26...
