Theater Fire Prompts Venue Change: Berwick academy to Stage ‘les Misérables’ at Marshwood High SOuTH BerWICK – Berwick Academy is thrilled to announce that the Upper School production of the timeless classic “Les Misérables” will be staged on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Marshwood High School. Curtain time is 7 p.m. Because of a fire that recently broke out in the Patricia Baldwin Whipple Arts Center Theater on the campus of Berwick Academy, the show, which is the school’s annual major theatrical production, was forced to find a new home. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of neighboring school Marshwood High, the show will go on as planned. Head of School Greg Sch-

neider commented, “It is hard to express the amount of gratitude we all feel to Marshwood

High School and Principal Paul Mehlhorn. Their willingness to adapt, adjust, and accommo-

date their schedule to be good neighbors is like nothing I have ever seen as a school leader.

“Clearly, Berwick Academy will be looking for ways to repay this tremendous gesture in months and years to come. As Head of School, there are rare moments when I believe we have to be willing to think outside of the box to create remarkable opportunities for young people. “That said, I have fallen back upon my most trusted mantra in this challenging circumstance: do what is in the best interest of the students. I believe that we have done our best to find that outcome in this case, and that we will all be witness to a very special performance.” See LES MIS page 4...

WellS – U.S. Sen. Susan Collins announced this week that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers intends to allocate $3.5 million in federal funding to complete the full dredging of Wells Harbor this fall during the fall/winter dredge availability 2013-2014 window. Since Wells Harbor sustained damage as a result of Hurricane Sandy, it was eligible for funding provided in the Supplemental Appropriations Act, which was signed into law on Jan. 29. The Army Corps is currently moving ahead with completing the coordination and developing plans and specifications for the project. “The nation’s small ports and harbors play an important role in local economies, and there is an ongoing need to address the maintenance backlog to ensure they are properly maintained and can continue to provide economic benefit locally, regionally, and nationally,” said Collins. “This is welcome news for the Town of Wells and will help provide economic benefits for the businesses that rely on the

According to town officials, during astronomical high tides, many of the slips in the harbor are no longer accessible. The harbor has incrementally been filling in with sand, reducing the 150 moorings to 86 and increasing navigational safety problems.
