African Children’s Choir Sing for their Schooling By Timothy Gillis WELLS Over the years, the African Children’s Choir has played before presidents, heads of state and even the Queen of England for her diamond jubilee. The choir has also had the honor of singing alongside artists like Paul McCartney, Annie Lennox, Keith Urban, and Mariah Carey. This month, regular folks like us will get a chance to take in their youthful, international sounds at three different local venues as part of their ninemonth tour world tour. They

are singing for their supper, in a sense. They are raising money that will help them return to Uganda, where the members of this choir hail, and support their
schooling up through and including university. Amy Berry, tour leader for the choir, cut her proverbial teeth as a social worker. She has vis-
ited and done mission work in Uganda on five different occasions. She graduated from East Tennessee State University in 2016 with a degree in social work.
“I have a huge heart for Uganda and its people,” she said. “I learned about the African Children’s Choir through a friend of a former chaperone. I knew this was an amazing opportunity for me (to) realize my next step in serving in Uganda.” Berry grew up in a small town called Bluff City, TN, and this work has helped expose her to international concerns. “When the children first come, many things are brand new to them. Women’s Ice Hockey, Here to Stay YORK The U.S. Women’s Ice Hockey team just celebrated winning gold at the Olympics. Not so long ago, the committee reportedly considered removing the sport from the Olympics since there was no parity with other nations: it was always Canada or the U.S. competing for the highest prize. that was the case again this year—with the US team edging Canada on penalties—the level of talented female players has risen across the globe. A local woman got her start in the sport as a youngster, when she was the lone female competing with a bunch of boys. Mandy Cronin credits her parents, Rose and Jim, for being her biggest supporters and helping her move from early experiences at local rinks to going pro in Canada. “We moved to York in 1983 from the Dayton, Ohio, area with five children, ages 3, 8, 10,
16, 17,” said Rose. “Mandy was the youngest and had to always follow around to wherever her siblings were going. That is how she began to play ice hockey.” Mandy has seen the sport come a long way since those days. When she was younger, there were no girls’ teams in the area to join. “I was 12 when I tried out for the Seacoast Spartans and made the team as the first girl,” she said this week. “That was when I first tried playing goalie.” Although she had no experience before that tryout, she beat out

Shakespeare’s Source for The Fool, 11 Plays Unearthed By Timothy Gillis SEACOAST There’s excitement in the world of Shakespeare. It’s a monumental find. Impartial advertising calls it the most important discovery since the mid-1800’s. Academe considers it the Olympian summit in scholarship. A new book called “A Brief Discourse of Rebellion and Rebels by George North: A Newly Uncovered Manuscript Source for Shakespeare’s Plays” by Dennis McCarthy (pictured) and June Schlueter has the lit-

And another one: Marketing. The book is in only its third week of publication and already requires a second printing. By all accounts, it’s a discovery of the most important Shakespearean source after “Plutarch’s Lives,” the works of Hall and Hollinshed, Ovid and The Bible.

He was led to believe that sources for works in Shakespeare’s canon were in a family estate library in England and were referenced in a 1927 auction catalog. “I was positive there would be some sort of source. Help Us Locate This Long Lost Mother
PERKINS COVE John and Clare Platt are searching all over. But this is not the type of search where Google will be much help. They are trying to find John’s biological family. They have been able
to find out quite a bit, relatively speaking, about his father, but locating his mother is still proving elusive. Perhaps you can help. “My husband was adopted in Montreal in 1958 and,
after years of searching for birth family, has recently been reunited with two half-sisters on his father’s side. We now know that his father chartered a sailing ship out of Perkins Cove in the 1950s and we understand from his sisters that his father may have met his mother in Ogunquit as well, although the identity of his mother remains a mystery, says Clare from the United Kingdom, where they now reside. The story is that John was adopted in Montreal in June 1958. Hospital records suggest that his mother may have been 23 years old (i.e. born in 1935) and that she was born in Canada, however the records are not wholly accurate and sometimes contradictory. For example, John’s official documentation states that his date of birth was Sept. 6, 1958, but hospital records indicate that he was

actually born in the early hours of Oct. 6, according to the Platts. “Adoption files are closed in Quebec Province and so we do not have access to these as yet, Clare said. The Platts are worried that they might be running out of time to speak with people who were around in the 1950s and of an age to remember John’s father. They contacted The Weekly Sentinel for help, and we connected them with The Maine Irish Heritage Center, which (despite the name) helps track the ancestral roots of anyone from anywhere. There Matthew Jude Barker immediately jumped into action. “At the Maine Irish Heritage Center, we sponsor a DNA study called the Maine Gaeltacht DNA Project through FamilyTreeDNA. lyze their results and have even solved some adoption cases using DNA and good, old fashioned genealogy, Barker said. “Clare has been tracing her husband’s heritage and trying to ascertain the identity of his birth mother after having already identified the birth father through DNA. “In October 2016, Clare’s husband John’s Ancestry DNA test results came back, and it showed that he had some very close DNA matches on his father’s side, first and second cousins in fact. This knowledge eventually led to finding the name of his birth father, Jon Lambert, who was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1925. He also found two half-sisters. Although there are conflicting dates and information, it appears John was born in Montreal on October 6, 1958. Hospital records indicate that his mother was a 23-year old named Michelle Smith who was born in Canada, but this cannot be verified. Unfortunately, adoption records in Quebec Province are currently still sealed. DNA matches that appear to be on the maternal side have thus far only been fourth to sixth cousins. John’s results have just recently been transferred to FamilyTreeDNA, so it is hoped that being in another giant DNA database will shed some light on the mystery. Although John appears to be mostly of French extraction, he can still join the Maine Gaeltacht DNA Project, where many members also have French, English and Scottish heritage. By joining the study, it might be possible to narrow down closer DNA matches on his maternal side. John Platt’s biological See LOST page 5...

Schooled in Shakespeare
By Timothy Gillis A former colleague of mine said he had to read all of Shakespeare’s plays while a student at Bowdoin College. Three times. Once before the class, again during a few meetings, and then again after, when writing an essay. When we taught together,
students read Romeo and Juliet, MacBeth, and Hamlet, though there was talk of replacing Shakepeare’s tale of two young lovers with the pop sensation Twilight by Stephanie Meyers. Now students at Maine high schools read one or two works—most probably including Hamlet, one of the
Bard’s least accessible plays. At Traip Academy, students at all levels tackle Shakespeare’s tale of the tortured Dane pondering whether “to be or not to be. Carla Landers, a teacher there for fourteen years, says she will sometimes use Othello, depending on the lesson. For a psychology unit, they explore

Hamlet’s mental state as he ponders revenge. “We ask ‘How do emotion and thought motivate behavior?’ she said. “Students are initially nervous. I tell them I happen to have a degree in Shakespeare and that we will get through it. ‘Don’t worry about the thee’s and thou’s. Focus on the characters and their issues.’ They do okay with it once they get that comfort level. It’s the meaning behind the words. Landers has them read parts and then act out a few scenes, but she encourages them to interpret them in a modern way. The work becomes part of their final assessment.

...SHAKESPEARE from page 1 ment, that showed that Shakespeare got this one point from one manuscript, McCarthy said. “I thought it would already be well known. Immediately, he hit upon a memo’s overt reference to Jack Cade, a character who appears in Henry IV, parts 1 and 2, as well as Richard III. McCarthy studied the Shakespeare plays next to the North text and had no trouble spotting the Cade connection. The North poems include Jack Cade and the “rebel lament of his ghost, who regrets that he has died for all of his protesting. From there, he used the word recognition software to discover several more plays indebted to North. Perhaps most exciting of all, the book traces Shakespeare’s Fool to the North text, and to Merlyn the magician (aka Merlin) as its source—a truly groundbreaking discovery. Both Merlin and The Fool invert the logical order to simultaneously subvert, warn, and (like satire), encourage change. Note: The seven words Shakespeare invented that can be found in the first paragraph are excitement, monumental, impartial, advertising, cademe, Olympian, and summit.

~ News ~ ...LOST from page 2 father, Jon Lambert, spent the summer months chartering a sailing ship out of Perkins Cove {in the 1950s} and this is where John’s sisters think it is most likely that their father would have met John’s mother, Clare told The Weekly Sentinel in an email. A relative thought that Jon Lambert had dated a woman with the last surname of Francis in 1956-57. It would seem possible that a FrenchCanadian woman who was vacationing in the Ogunquit area met Jon Lambert, got pregnant, and then went back to Montreal to have the baby. “We don’t know anything for sure—just lots of anecdotes and possibilities‌ but I honestly believe that our only chance now is for someone who knew about John’s birth to see or hear something of our search,â€? Clare wrote. Jon Lambert’s genealogy includes the surnames Girard/ Durard, Pepin dit LaChance, Boisvert, Storer and Littlefield, all French and English surnames that have been in Maine for a long time. It is still hoped that the magic of DNA will solve this family mystery. But, as the Platt family hopes, someone out there might just know something.
As Clare Platt writes, “Anyway it has been an interesting journey and has had a happy ending for John in meeting his sisters. He also now knows where his love of sailing and boats came from as this was always a strong pull for him and his adoptive family had no interest in or knowledge of sailing—it was quite literally in his blood. If you know anyone with any of the aforementioned surnames, please contact The Weekly Sentinel by calling 207646-8448 or emailing editer@ theweeklysentinel.com. For more information on the Maine Irish Heritage Center and its Maine Gaeltacht DNA Project, see the website: www. maineirish.com, as well as check out their Facebook page. The MIHC Library is open every Friday, 10am-2pm. Consultations are $25/1 hour for members, $35/1 hour for non-members. Article written by Matthew Jude Barker with contributions from Timothy Gillis.

On her second tour, she was 18 and still in the choir. Nambooze became the conductor for this tour. “The kids are very interested in singing and traveling, she said. “They get to study while they here. And the choir raises money for their continued education back home. Nambooze, 26, is from a district called Luwero in the central part of Uganda. She has ten half brothers and sisters. She studied Business Administration and specialized in Finance in university. The choir will perform some songs in English and some in Luganda, one of the major languages of Uganda. Tunes include “Rejoice, “He’s Got the Whole World in his Hands, and “This Little Light of Mine. Music for Life (MFL - the
parent organization for The African Children’s Choir) works in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda and South Africa. MFL has educated more than 52,000 children and impacted the lives of over 100,000 people through its relief and development programs during its history. MFL purpose is to help create new leadership for tomorrow’s Africa, by focusing on education. The African Children’s Choir is a nonprofit humanitarian and relief organization dedicated to helping Africa’s most vulnerable children today so they
can help Africa tomorrow. Janefer, 8, has been with the African’s Children for nine months, two and half months of which have been spent in the US. “We went to the aquarium in Baltimore, and to Washington, D.C. I love to see people who love to dream. I love literacy classes,â€? she said. Of Maine? “It is nice, but the cold weather!â€? Lookie Lookie Heats up the Hall KITTERY Lookie Lookie brings its Latin beats to The Dance Hall on Saturday, March 3 at 8 p.m. The Boston-based band is the brainchild of bassist Chris Maclachlan, best known for his work in the punk band Human Sexual Response. Maclachlan has an abiding love for Latin BugalĂş, a crossover genre invented by Newyorican musicians in the 1960s. Incredibly fun and catchy, BugalĂş lies somewhere between the stately Cuban sounds of the 50s and the manic high salsa of the 70s. Top artists included Joe Cuba and Ricardo Ray, whose tunes form the backbone of the band’s repertoire. The band is indeed named for an early Ricardo Ray hit, “Lookie Lookie,â€? which encapsulates some of the panAmerican fusion that went into BugalĂş. Along with playing, just
about everybody in the band sings, in Spanish and English. The band has a melange of styles that includes Afro-Cuban rhythms, mambo, rock and soul. All eight members come from other bands, in a variety of styles, but this is one “side project that captured all of their imaginations. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door and can be purchased at www.thedancehallkittery.org.

Health & Fitness Regrow Healthy Hair after Chemo Chemotherapy is designed to attack rapidly dividing cells. Unfortunately, hair follicles are some of the fastest-growing cells in the body. That’s why, within a few weeks of beginning chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer, many women report losing some or all of their hair. BreastCancer.org says that some chemotherapy treatments will only cause hair loss on the head. Others can also cause the loss of hair elsewhere on the body. No treatment can guarantee that hair will not fall out during or after chemotherapy. However, planning ahead for changes in appearance, and taking the steps to help strengthen hair when it begins to grow in again—typically several weeks after treatment—can make a difference. It’s important to note that hair almost always grows

back after chemotherapy. However, women must be mindful that there may be some distinct changes when hair grows back. Hair can regrow with a different texture. Hair may be curly when it was once straight. Hair may now be thick instead of thin. Hair color may change as well. Other people experience little to no changes. How quickly hair grows back depends on individual health. It can take up to three months before women get a full a head of hair. As the body recovers from chemotherapy and more effectively processes vitamins and other nutrients, those nutrients will be delivered to hair follicles. To promote healthier hair growth, individuals may want to try changing their diets to include ingredients that can be beneficial to hair growth and health. The following are some foods to try. • Salmon: Salmon and
other fatty fish contain omega3 acids that can fuel shiny, full hair. The body does not make omega-3s, so they must be acquired through food. • Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt contains an ingredient known as pantothenic acid, or vitamin B5. This can help improve blood flow to the scalp and also may assist against hair thinning and loss. • Iron: Iron contained in organ meats, fortified cereals, whole grains, and legumes can protect against hair loss. • Eggs: Rich in biotin, eggs can help hair grow. Biotin also helps strengthen brittle fingernails. • Avocados: Avocado contains healthy oils that can fight dry hair and promote shine. Hair loss is a temporary side effect of cancer treatment. With time, patience and a healthy diet, hair can return. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.
It may take a few months, but hair can be restored after chemotherapy and other cancer treatments have ended.

Air Quality and Heart Health According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, studies have shown that air pollution can trigger heart attacks and strokes. The threat posed by air pollution is greater among people who have or have had coronary artery disease, angina, heart attack, bypass surgery or an angioplasty, heart failure, stroke or transient ischemic attack, or blockages in the arteries of the neck or legs. People who have internal cardiac defibrillators also may be at greater risk of heart attack or stroke due to air pollution. While it’s common to assume that air
pollution is only a problem for people who live in large cities, the American Heart Association warns against making such assumptions, noting that air pollution can be traced to a host of sources, including wildfires and cooking with wood stoves, that can be found outside of major cities. Health & Fitness Tooth-Colored Options Part of Orthodontic Evolution
Braces have evolved considerably over the years. With new technologies available, plus an acknowledgment that braces are a necessity for people of various ages and not just children, patients of all ages are choosing orthodontic procedures to give themselves healthy smiles. Orthodontic treatment in some shape or form has been around since 1000 B.C.E. Studies of exhumed Egyptian mummies found that some Egyptians were buried with crude metal bands around their teeth, and archaeologists believe a material may have been tied to these bands to provide
pressure to move the teeth. Ancient Romans and Greeks wrote about bringing newly emerging teeth into proper position by pushing them with fingers. Pierre Fauchard is considered the father of dentistry and a pioneer in the field of orthodontics. Fauchard invented the bandeau, which was a horseshoe-shaped strip of metal with regularly spaced holes to fit around teeth and correct their alignment, states Colgate Oral Care Center. Nowadays, braces have evolved even further, with millions of people choosing from the various types of braces to correct dental problems. The
American Association of Orthodontics notes that one out of five orthodontic patients is over the age of 21 — proving it’s never too late to straighten one’s teeth. Braces were once considered a cosmetic procedure only. Dentists today recognize that correcting misaligned teeth can

prevent periodontal problems, tooth wear, dental caries, infected gums, and various forms of dental disease. Braces work by applying pressure to the teeth to gradually shift them and the jaw. Traditional braces consist of small brackets adhered to the teeth that are connected by a wire. Pressure is achieved by periodically using tight, thick wires. As pressure is applied to the periodontal ligament, which holds the teeth in place, the body will naturally create new room and adjust. If too much pressure is applied too soon, tooth loss may occur. Braces no longer resemble the railroad style metal braces that wrapped around teeth in the
early 1970s. Brackets are small and may be the color of metal or enamel. Brackets may be affixed to the front of the teeth or the back. Some people opt for clear plastic aligners, which can be very successful in the hands of trained orthodontists. Many orthodontists use heat-activated nickel-titanium alloy wires that apply constant pressure and do not need to be tightened as frequently. Also, advanced photography and x-rays enable orthodontists to plan treatment plans more effectively. Orthodontists spend two to three years learning how to properly align teeth and jaws, says the American Association of Orthodontists. Braces treatment lasts an average of about two years, with patients visiting the orthodontist every four to six weeks for adjustments. Braces have come a long way. In a short time, anyone can have a beautiful smile to show off. This article was provided by MetroCreative. Health & Fitness Did You Know About Mold? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that there is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in an indoor environment, including a home. But by controlling moisture in their homes or apartments, men and women can control indoor mold growth. One way to do just that is to prevent condensation in a home
by adding insulation. In addition, clean building materials or furnishings that become wet as promptly as possible, and no more than 48 hours after the items have become wet. Mold produces allergens and irritants, and inhaling or touching mold or mold spores can trigger allergic responses such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, rashes on the skin, and even

Home Values Up 5.26 Percent in January STATEWIDE Realtors across Maine report steady activity in most markets. According to Maine Listings, sales of single-family existing homes increased 0.21 percent comparing January 2018 to January 2017. The value of those homes, tracked statistically by the Median Sales Price, indicates a jump in home values of 5.26 percent to an MSP of $200,000 during that same time period. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “Buyers are anxiously awaiting the increased forsale inventory that spring traditionally brings, says Kim Gleason, president of the Maine Association of Realtors. “The January 2018 forsale inventory is 17 percent below January 2017 due to a strong winter selling season. “Now is a great time to list your property, because buyers are searching for homes in anticipation of spring. Realtors are reporting that multiple offer situations are common in areas that are at full employment. In Maine’s rural areas, buyers are more cautious, but they are finding great values. Nationwide sales have dipped 4.8 percent comparing January 2018 to January 2017. The National Association of Realtors today announced the national MSP in January was $241,700, an increase of 5.7 percent from January 2017. Regionally, sales in the Northeast declined 7.6 percent while the regional MSP of $269,100 represents a climb of 6.8 percent comparing January to January.

Local Bank Helps City Skate Away SANFORD SIS Bank is proud to announce its recent donation of $2,500 to the City of Sanford, to go towards the development and opening of Sanford’s first public ice skating rink. The opening of the ice skating rink, February 27, kicks off the city’s 250th Anniversary celebration. The city, which has partnered with the Sanford Springvale Chamber of Commerce, has organized a full year of events to celebrate its milestone anniversary. Opening a public ice skating rink will provide the community with a place to gather for recreational enjoyment and exercise, as well as set the stage for possible sports programs for all ages. Helen M. Berg YORK – Helen M. Berg of York, previously of Gardner, MA, left this earth on Monday, February 5, 2018 at home with family by her side. Helen was born in Gardner, the only child
of Remi and Helen Hudon. After her childhood, Helen ventured onto art school in Boston and then to New York City. As an adventurous young woman, she pursued her passion for art as a commercial artist, while modeling with the John Robert Powers Agency, and flying as a flight attendant for National Airlines on Lockheed Lodestars. Helen married John Berg, in 1952, and they returned home to the city of Gardner where they built a family and raised their five children. They were a committed and inspiring team, and their partnership spanned
62 years. She was a strong, beautiful, courageous woman. She put family first, and her absolute priority was always her husband and their children. She filled their home with the big bow window on Cross Street with much love… many plants… lots of baking… and endless projects. While John Berg left his creative mark on the community through the many homes and buildings he built in and around Gardner, Helen was forever an artist. Through her life-long career and passion, she shared her talent across many platforms. She opened a small busi-
ness in Gardner in the 1970’s— The Busy Bee—on Parker Street, and subsequently on Cross Street. There, she taught classes in various forms of arts and crafts. Her multitude of gifts she leaves behind include countless decoupage handbags, boxes, clocks, lamps, dolls, jewelry and paintings. Familiar faces in their community, John Berg served for years as a call firefighter, and Helen gave back through fundraising and hosting and producing events—including fashion shows for Henry Heywood Memorial Hospital, and church ba-
zaars for Sacred Heart. While simultaneously running her business and volunteering, she was endlessly supporting her kids in the stands and the auditorium at Gardner High School sports and plays. Splitting their married life between Gardner and York, Maine, after many summers the Bergs made Maine their permanent home. Working late in life, Helen’s final decades were spent as the Art Director at Salmon Falls Stoneware in Dover, NH. Her tireless creativity inspired her work. Her blueberry basSee BERG page 21...
~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Hi Computer Lady, A piece of freeware that I have used for at least 10 years is “aTube Catcher”, which will not only download to your hard drive but also in many different formats (avi, wmv, mp4 etc). This same software can also burn to DVD so that the disc will play in any DVD player. The software allows the user to select PAL (as here in Aussie) or NTSC (as in the USA). This software is a prime example of the expertise of freeware developers and deserves the attention of any home user wishing to process any media file be it audio or video. accepted by a publisher. On my computer on the internet there is a complete copy of my work--in docx. The publisher wishes it to be in PDF. How may I change the docx to PDF? Or, can the publisher change it to be able to edit it? Thank you, John Dear John, The fact that your manuscript is in docx format tells me that you are using Microsoft Word. Fortunately, it is easy to export your work into PDF format. Here is how. 1. Open your manuscript in Word. 2. Click on the “File” tab, then click “Export” in the left column. 3. Click the button that says, “Create PDF/XPS” 4. A dialog box will open. Select where you want to save your document, and make sure the “Save as type:” line says, “.pdf” 5. Click the “Publish” button You now have a copy of your work in PDF format that you can send to your publisher. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, At the beginning of the
year, I created a spreadsheet for weight lifting. I have a column for each exercise, and fill out a row for each day that I work out. The name of each exercise is at the top of each column. As I have added more rows, I have to scroll back up to the top to see the headings for each column. I seem to remember that there was a way to make the top row in my spreadsheet “stick”, can you tell me how? Thanks, Jane Dear Jane, I’m so glad you are working on getting stronger! What you want to do in Excel is use the “Freeze Panes” feature. Here is how to do that. 1. Open your Excel worksheet. 2. Click the row number (on the very left edge) just below the row you want to freeze. 3. Click on the “View” tab in the ribbon, then click on the “Freeze Panes” icon. 4. Click on “Freeze Panes” in the menu. Now, when you scroll down in your worksheet, the name of your exercises will stay visible. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,

My computer has a lot of apps running when I look at Task Manager. How do I know which ones I can delete to make my computer run faster? If I delete one will it start up the next time I turn on my computer or is canceled forever? Thanks for you help. Kris Dear Kris, First, we need to determine what part of Task Manager you are viewing. Task Manager shows you what apps are currently running, what background processes are running, in addition to a lot of other things. If you are looking to stop apps from automatically starting every time Windows starts, you need to click on the “Startup” tab in Task Manager. If the startup tab is not visible, click “More Details” in the lowerleft corner of the task manager window. Once you have clicked on the “Startup” tab, you will be looking at the apps that are starting every time Windows starts. If you want to stop an app from starting, right click on it and click, “Disable” in the context menu. Your app will still be listed in the startup list, but the status will change to “Disabled”. Most of those apps will be easy to identify, and you can safely disable any of them (I would NOT disable your antivirus program however). When you disable an item on the startup list, it will stay disabled until you change it back to enabled. You can, however run the program any time you want by running it from the start menu. If you see an entry that you can’t identify, right click on it, then click “Search Online” this will take you to search results for that file. I hope this helps your computer run faster. Her exclusive bear line, which depicts bears as characters in ordinary moments in life, has become the object of collectors across the country. Having lost her husband John Berg and their son J. Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Like a feline King Kong, Nicky balances high atop his skyscraper—ok, his cat tree— and swipes his mighty paw at the green feathered cat toy, as if it were a plane attacking him. With strength and stealth, Nicky is determined to take that thing down! Zoom zoom! The feathered toy keeps bouncing back, but Nicky never falters. He rolls on his back. He swipes from his hiding place behind a post. His yellow eyes laser focused on his prey, Nicky makes a death-defying leap, rears up on his fuzzy hind legs, and seizes the toy, wand and all, and tears at it with his fangs. Then he stops, green fuzz hanging from his mouth, and begs for some cat treats. As Nicky jumps down and strolls away, you can’t help noticing his black fuzzy pantaloons that swish when he walks. But don’t you dare call him pretty! Pretty, he is not. He is handsome, and very brave. Nicky is one of the most striking cats I’ve ever seen. He has velvet black legs and a chocolate brown mane that frames his strikingly beautiful black face. His glowing yellow eyes twinkle
when you interact with him. This fellow has a profile that inspires paintings. Nicky is seven years young, a remarkable cat who will add fun and energy and love to your home. Come and visit him at our adoption center at 1420 Post Road, next to the Wells Library. Open 11-4pm Tues - Sat. For more information, call 207-6461611. Our thrift shop is accepting donations of clean, quality housewares and home decor. We are still having our 50% off winter clothing clearance sale, so please don’t bring any winter clothing until next August, because we have nowhere to store them. Only a few bags of donations at a time, please. The kitties at Safe Haven’s Adoption Center need socializers, cat-care givers, buddies and Friskies canned cat food and cat treats. Please come visit, and get to know these dear kitties who eager to meet the special person in their life. Call 207-646-1611.

Rhea I. Sanborn, 71 ELIOT – Rhea I. Sanborn, 71, of Eliot, died on Friday, January 26, 2018, with her family by her side. A Celebration of Life in her honor is planned at The Regatta at 28 Levesque Drive, Eliot, on Saturday, March 3, to begin at 4 p.m. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.jspelkeyfuneralhome. com. Born December 29, 1946 in Wheeling, WV to Bonnie M. (Boone) Wolodkin together with Edward Wolodkin, raised by Edward and Dorothy (Severeid) Wolodkin, she graduated from Triadelphia High School in 1964. After several months caring for (Boone) maternal siblings Karen, Mark and Olivia, she left to Kittery to join her eldest sister Brenda (Wolodkin) Ritner where she assisted with the care of her nieces Kelly and Suzanne. Brenda introduced her to Stephen Sanborn, and the couple dated briefly before he was drafted to Vietnam. After Stephen’s return the couple married in a civil ceremony on February 15, 1969 and purchased their first house
on Cass Street in Portsmouth, NH. In the years following she worked, completed some collegiate coursework and a certification in real estate sales, and along with Stephen, purchased, renovated and managed properties along the New Hampshire seacoast. She began a family in 1978 with the birth of her son Daniel, followed soon after in 1981 by Michael. The new family made homes along the seacoast before settling in Eliot, where the couple began work on a new house. With Stephen she established partnership in Ford Financial Services, Inc. and eventually earned an insurance license and served as Vice President. She worked in the insurance business for over thirty years, helping launch new companies and serving in various corporate roles, enjoying success operating some of the top producing agencies in the country. Illness struck in 2005 in the
form of advanced-stage ovarian cancer, thrusting her into an unusual heroic role. She applied her methodical work style and resilient spirit fighting the progression of the disease for over 12 years, and in the process won the respect of medical staff and other patients of cancer as a coach and mentor. She was an active participant in support events and networks such as the woman’s cancer support group at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, the Stowe Weekend of Hope, and Turning The Tide. As an avid reader, she principally enjoyed fictional works. A warm and generous host, she was proud of a meticulously kept home that she readily extended to family and friends. She loved travel, and over the course of her lifetime she managed to visit four continents, including numerous exotic locales throughout China, England, France, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Morocco,Scotland, Spain and beyond. Rhea was predeceased by her beloved husband of 48 years, Stephen Wayne Sanborn. She is survived by sons Michael andDaniel Sanborn, siblings Brenda (Wolodkin) Caveney of Vero Beach, FL, Donnah (Wolodkin) Whitaker and spouse Bill of Concord, OH, Edward Wolodkin of Moundsville, WV, and many nieces, nephews and ex-

back to her hometown area with a series of camps for young girls who are interested in skating with sticks. “In regards to what makes this M-Power Husky G.O.A.L. Camp unique is that, while it is drawing together a group of girls with the common bond of hockey, our focus of this camp is leadership and character development through sport, Cronin said. The camp includes daily on-ice skills development, classroom sessions with guest speakers on study tips and college recruiting, fitness and conditioning, as well as outdoor adventures and team building. “We are holding this camp
on the campus of a premier private school where we will have access to state-of-the-art athletic and academic facilities, Cronin said. “Of course we will be on the ice every day, but we will also have the girls participating in other activities including, multi-sport training, outdoor learning experiences, and teamwork and leadership programs. Because it is an overnight camp, we will also offer fun evening activities both on and off campus where the girls will create life-long connections with each other. For more information on the camps, and to register, visit www.m-powerhockey.com.

Nominate Now for William Troubh Community Service Award PORTLAND The Portland Sea Dogs are now accepting nominations for the William Troubh Community Service Award. The annual award recognizes a local citizen who is making a positive impact within the city of Portland. It may be a public employee or private citizen who, through their efforts, makes Portland a great city to live and work. The Sea Dogs established the award to honor Troubh in April of 2014. Troubh was a lifelong resident of the city of Portland, who dedicated his life to making Portland a great place to live and work. He served multiple terms on the Portland City Council and was Mayor of the
city in 1974 and 1975 and again in 1983 and 1984. Troubh was instrumental in bringing the Portland Sea Dogs to the city in 1994. He also played a major role in the development of the Portland Waterfront, Cumberland County Civic Center and the Portland Ice Arena, now named in his honor. His contributions will be enjoyed by residents and visitors of the city for generations to come. ...HOCKEY from page 1 “There was no where to play women’s ice Hockey after college except Canada, she said.
