He happened to follow Bruce during a defining period in his career, and during what may have been the industry’s most dramatic year, 2012, the year of the Great Canadian Syrup Heist and the warmest year in history. The result is The Sugar Season, published by Da Capo Press and Perseus Books. The

Ogunquit Receives Down East Magazine Honor OGUNQUIT – After a precedent-setting ban on lawn pesticides passed last November in Ogunquit, Down East magazine chose the town as the recipient of the 33rd Down East Environmental Award. Ogunquit is the first community in Maine and the second in the United States (following Takoma Park, Maryland) to prohibit the use of insect killers, weed killers, and fertilizers on all land, public and private. “Ogunquit was an obvious choice for this year’s award, and we’re proud to have protectors

and leaders of environmental issues like this in Maine, noted Down East Editor in Chief Kathleen Fleury. “It’s even inspired us to stop using pesticides at the

(OWLS) offers classes in Spanish and Chinese language and culture for kids ages Pre-K through Grade 8. Principal Nina D’Aran is thrilled to host OWLS in Central’s facilities: “I’m a big supporter, she said. One World Language School is the brainchild of Julie Reece of Lee, NH and Brigitte Herz of Durham, NH and is hosted in 11 area schools. The OWLS goal is to prepare students to travel to a foreign country and be able to communicate with kids their own age. They originally organized as a club and offered languages as diverse as Japanese, Swahili, and Gujarati. In 2003 they formed the

One World Language Schools, a non-profit, that now offers classes in German, French, Spanish and Chinese. The school draws on the University of New Hampshire (UNH) for international teachers. Herz and Reece develop their own curriculum, which is games-based and designed to be fun. For example, learning the names of fruits becomes an opportunity to make ice cream with those fruity flavors. Learning the names of vegetables means using those vegetables to make pizza toppings. Puppets of all kinds accompany the lessons. It is deliberate that kids think they’re only having fun when they are actually picking up a second language. OWLS emphasis is also

on spoken language and communication rather than formal grammar. The teachers use language and sentence patterns that kids already use in English. For example, the familiar sentence, “Do you want to play? is used in English and then taught in the second language. Other translated familiar sentence patterns, for example, “Do you see the green frog? or “May I have an orange? are translated into Spanish or Chinese to allow students to move successfully from familiar word construction in English to that of a different language. Ages 3 through 7 use spoken language exclusively. Once children are 8 years old, about third grade level, their understanding of English is solidified, so they are ready to read and write in a new language. Reading and writing are introduced gradually and naturally. Children are grouped according to age. Ages 3 through 7 are Trailblazers; ages 8 through 10 are Explorers, and ages 11 through 13 are Voyagers. The emphasis is on kids seeing themselves as world travelers. Classes are kept small – no more than 8 students per class – so teachers can individualize. Repetition is built into the curriculum in fun ways. For example, the lessons include a forgetful animal character. Students have to keep reminding her of the names of animals, so they get more than one opportunity to learn those names. Central School’s Principal D’Aran enjoys working with the OWLS students and faculty. She sees OWLS classes as a wonderful opportunity for children. “If the kids don’t do sports, this offers another See LANGUAGE page 3...

YORK – Seminar held at Atlantic Design Center (in the Eldredge building), 627 US Route 1, York, on Saturday, March 14, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Jay Feldman, Director of Beyond Pesticides, Washington DC, and Chip Osborne, Owner of Osborne Organics, Marblehead, MA, will discuss compelling reasons to consider a natural approach to lawn care. Public health, storm-water runoff, and water quality issues are all reasons to reduce dependence on synthetic and chemical products to grow our lawns and gardens. The Workshop will take a 3-step Systems Approach to Natural Turf Management and will be held March 14 at the Ogunquit FireStation, 15 School Street, Ogunquit, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Osborne will discuss: Basic understanding of soil biology; the proper use of natural, organic products as indicated by soil testing; and specific and sound cultural practices. This will be explained so that the do-it-yourselfer will be able to care for the lawn or inform his landscape contractor. It will also be a great introduction to natural lawn care for the Landscape Contractor. The presentation will also address what can be done at the municipal level to reduce the negative impact on human health and environment by the continued use of synthetic products. Reservations may be made at mclaesson@eldredgelumber.com or call 207-3633004.

the sidewalks and streetscape at the heart of the village will get a major facelift thanks to additional funding from the town of Ogunquit. While the project will have an impact on traffic over the coming 19 months, the good news is that road construction will cease from June 18 through Labor Day. Though work on the new bridges will continue, temporary bridges will keep traffic moving. Outside of the summer period, the town will be working long and hard to finish the project by December 30, 2016. In the meantime, updates on progress and traffic impacts will keep you informed.

with my OpenOffice". Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have Windows 7 Home Premium and use IE 11. I've just (finally!) gone from dial-up to high-speed (cable company broadband). I'm loving it, but I'm also having to get used to new ways of doing things. And therein lie my questions: With dialup, I would leave my computer turned on all day; I'd start it up in the morning, shut it down at night (or if we were going out) . With broadband, I know that the computer being on now means that I'm connected to the Internet all the time. Keeping in mind that I have a full, always-updated security program in place (firewall and scanning always on), can I still leave the computer on all day? Or should I shut it down whenever I'm not using it, then start it up again later? Also, I was told (by the cable installer) that I could use the computer and be truly offline by unplugging the Ethernet wire, then plugging it back in when I want to go online. Is there any disadvantage to that? You are truly our maven and appreciated more than you know. Thank you for all you do. Lucille in N.J. Dear Lucille, I agree that it is quite an adjustment to go from connecting and disconnecting to the internet when we want to being always connected. Many programs however, work much better when you are always connected. As long as you have good security software and are behind a firewall (your router serves as a firewall) you should be quite secure. That doesn't mean that no one can ever get into your computer, but they would probably have to trick you into giving them access first. As far as unplugging the Ethernet cable, there really is no disadvantage. An Ethernet port is not technically "hot swappable" which means that you can plug it in while the computer is on, like a USB connection is, but I have never had any problems doing so with the computers on my workbench. If it gives you peace of mind to unplug the Ethernet cable when you don't want to be connected to the Internet, then go ahead and do so. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? The juror for this show is artist and teacher, Cameron Davis who studied art at Colby College, University of Southern Maine, the New Hampshire Institute of Art, River Tree Arts and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. Cameron is an active member of the Maine Art Edu-

OGUNQUIT – Darryl F. Zanuck’s 1946 production of Somerset Maugham’s 1944 novel “The Razor’s Edge will be held Sunday March 8, at 2 p.m., at the Dunaway Center, 23 School Street, Ogunquit. Admission (and popcorn) are free. “The Razor’s Edge is the first film version of W. Somerset Maugham’s 1944 novel. A Darryl F. Zanuck production, it was released in 1946 and stars Tyrone Power, Gene Tierney, John Payne, Anne Baxter, Clifton Webb, and Herbert Marshall, with supporting cast: Lucile Watson, Frank Latimore, and Elsa Lanchester. The film was directed by Edmund Goulding.

The book’s epigraph reads, “The sharp edge of a razor is difficult to pass over; thus the wise say the path to enlightenment is hard.â€? (Taken from a verse in the KathaUpanishad.) This intriguing tale centers on a soul-searching World War I veteran, Larry Darrell (Tyrone Power), an American pilot traumatized by his experiences in World War I — the death of a comrade who sacrificed himself on the last day of the war to save Larry’s life. He finds that he cannot settle back into the upper class. Shunning his planned marriage and career, he travels abroad to seek a more meaningful life, and causes his distraught fiancĂŠ

(Gene Tierney) to seek solace with another man (John Payne). However, her efforts to win him back leave disaster in her wake.

BUSINESS & FINANCE Phone Scam Alert YORK COUNTY – Please remember that phone scams do occur in our area of York County Maine. A local resident recently reported that she received a call claiming ...FRAUD from page 12 a security freeze which safeguards a person’s credit report. Without access to this sensitive information, an identity thief will be unable to obtain credit in that person’s name, thereby greatly minimizing the potential damage from the theft. Once the freeze is in place, the consumer has control over who can receive their credit report. Currently, only consumers who have been the victim of identity theft can turn on the security freeze for free. For all other consumers there is an initial cost of $10 for each of the three credit bureaus and subsequent fees of $10 or $12 to turn the freeze on and off. AARP is also encourag-

ing Mainers to visit aarp.org/ taxaide (1-888-227-7669) for information about AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax preparation program. Each tax season, Tax-Aide helps millions of low- to moderate-income taxpayers – especially those 60 and older – get the credits and deductions they deserve. In Maine, the program annually processes more than 20,000 tax returns at no cost. For these and other fraud prevention tips, visit aarp.org/ fraudwatchnetwork. Health & Fitness Snack Foods That Promote Better Sleep According to the National Sleep Foundation, changes in sleep patterns are a part of the aging process. Many people experience difficulty falling asleep and then staying asleep as they age, and that difficulty can make men and women over 50 feel more tired during the day. But even though difficulty sleeping may be a part of aging, that does not mean men and women over 50 cannot take steps to improve their sleeping patterns. For example, certain snack foods may help to improve quality of sleep, especially when these foods replace less healthy snacking options. While men and women over 50 should always consult with their physicians before making any changes to their diets, the AARP notes that the following are a handful of snack foods that promote better sleep. Almonds Magnesium is a mineral with muscle-relaxing properties, and almonds contain enough magnesium to help men and women get a better night’s sleep. A small amount of almonds before bed might be enough to make falling and staying asleep easier. Bananas Much like almonds, bananas provide a substantial amount of magnesium. Bananas also contain the amino acid tryptophan, which many people associate with Thanks-

giving turkey. While tryptophan might be most often associated with the sleepiness people feel after eating a holiday meal, it also has been linked to better sleep quality, so a banana shortly before bed might be just what you need to fall and stay asleep. Cheese and Crackers One more traditional snack may just help you get a better night’s sleep. Cheese and crackers contain tryptophan and carbohydrates, which can induce a better night’s sleep and help you fall asleep sooner. Cherries Cherries contain the sleep hormone melatonin, and the AARP notes that recent studies indicated that participants who drank tart cherry juice on a daily basis fell asleep more quickly and slept longer and better than participants who did not. Hummus The primary ingredient in hummus is chickpeas, which are loaded with tryptophan, folate and vitamin B6. Folate has proven especially beneficial to older men and women who need help regulating their sleep patterns, while vitamin B6 helps the body regulate its clock.

Walnuts Walnuts also contain melatonin, which can contribute to a longer, more restful night’s sleep. Walnuts also can help regulate stress, which is a leading cause of sleeping difficulty. Many men and women experience difficulty sleeping as

they age. But the right foods may just help combat such problems and help men and women get a more adequate night’s sleep. This article was provided by MetroCreative. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by articles from MetroCreative.

Health & Fitness Home Remedies For Joint Pain Can Provide Relief

Stiff, painful joints affect a vast number of people. According to the American College of Rheumatology, arthritis and

of the Canadian adult population has arthritis. The number of people living with arthritis is expected to increase as the Baby Boomer generation continues to age. Treatments for joint pain and stiffness range from medication to physical therapy. Finding

the right regimen may take some effort, including some trial and error. For those looking for treatments they can try at home, consider these homespun remedies. Exercise More Regular movement helps to maintain flexibility in the body’s joints. Those with joint pain may

shy away from exercise, but they could be doing themselves a disservice. Low-impact exercises, like swimming and water aerobics, can work out muscles and joints without adding extra stress. Walking can replace jogging or running, and yoga and pilates may be just the thing for deep stretching. Lose Weight Joint pain is often tied to obesity. Losing just a few pounds can ease up strain on certain joints, such as the hips, feet and knees. Shedding weight can improve mobility and decrease pain and potential future damage to joints. Exercise goes hand-in-hand with healthy eating to lose weight. Hot and Cold Therapies Using a heating pad, hot shower or bath or an ice pack can work wonders on arthritisrelated pains. Hot treatments will loosen up stiff joints, while cold therapy is best for acute pain relief. Do not apply hot and cold packs to the skin directly, as this can injure the skin. Wrap them in a towel first before application. Anti-inflammatory Foods and Beverages Explore the many different natural foods and herbs that are purported to reduce inflammation in the body. Ginger, turmeric, flaxseed, grape juice, and bromelain can alleviate inflammation and stiffness. Foods such as fatty fish and nuts high in omega-3 fatty acids also will help fight inflammation. Blueberries, garlic, celery, and kelp should be included in diets as well. Go for a Massage The Arthritis Foundation says regular massages can help reduce pain and stiffness and improve range of motion. The massage therapist should have experience working on people with arthritis. In addition, massages should be performed by licensed physical therapists and guided by a doctor’s recommendation. Increase Magnesium Intake Magnesium can alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. It is best ingested through dark, leafy greens but also can be taken in supplement form. Magnesium oil can be applied topically to sore joint areas. Joint pain can impact daily life and make activities less enjoyable. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways that do not require harsh medications to loosen joints and combat pain. This article was provided by MetroCreative. Local Healthy Maine Partnership Brings Leadership Skills to Local Students SOUTH BERWICK Almost 50 youth leaders from York, Traip, and Wells Schools gathered at Spring Hill Farm in South Berwick to learn leadership and public speaking skills, take part in a state-wide drug prevention focus group, and hear a young man in recovery speak about addiction. Dana Mitchell and students, of Dover Youth2Youth, provided an interactive workshop on public speaking. At the end of the workshop all students were able to act out different Public Service Announcements (PSAs) in front of the crowd At the end of the training all youth shared something they learned or will bring back to their community. Some of the answers included peer leadership, helping friends who might start using, and

many more terrific answers. One youth exclaimed how excited they were to implement a drug-take awareness campaign to promote Drug Take Back Day. The Choose To Be Healthy Coalition will support the youth who want to work on substance abuse prevention projects in their school or community. Choose To Be Healthy is a community health coalition that works to reduce the incidence of chronic disease and substance abuse. Choose to Be Healthy Coalition is largely funded with tobacco settlement money from the Fund for a Healthy Maine through the Healthy Maine Partnerships. ~ Pets ~ Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICKMeet Sweet Rosie who was saved at the last minute from certain death in a high kill shelter down South. Rosie is a six-yearold Walker Hound who is looking for her forever home. She is good with other dogs, cats and kids over 10. Rosie is not asking for much, just a loving family to cuddle with (Rosie is quite the snuggler!) and a nice warm wood stove to curl up by. Rosie has been spayed, is up to date on vac-

cinations, healthy and is ready to start the next chapter of her life. If you can provide a safe place and loving family for this gorgeous girl, please call her Foster Mom Cheryl at 207-676-5599. In addition to Rosie, ACAR has another hound; a handsome Bluetick Hound named Blue, a limited selection of teenage kittens, a nice selection of young adult cats and a smaller number of older cats also looking to you for new loving families.

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS – Looking for a new family member who will give you back so much love? A sweet and lovely kitty named Gemmie is waiting to meet you at St. David’s Budget Box in Kennebunk, near Anchor Fence on Route 1. Gemmie was neglected by a neighborhood group who knew her litter born was outside yet left them without shelter in this harsh winter. All her kittens perished except one, who was taken by someone who wouldn’t even allow her inside! The only kindness Gemmie received was a thin kitchen towel on a frozen doorstep for her to lie on. After we rescued her, we couldn’t find her! So we shook a bag of dry food, and out came running – a skinny, desperate young kitty. Gemmie trotted over and buried her face in the

cat food and ate and ate. We scooped her up in our arms and brought her back to Safe Haven. In foster care she gained weight and blossomed into a real beauty. Gemmie was nearly adopted several times but other kitties were chosen instead. When this happens we believe it’s simply not the right person for that particular kitty, and that the right person will appear eventually. To help Gemmie get undivided attention, she is now at the Budget Box where she’s the only kitty, and where she’s pampered and adored by the lovely team of women who run the store. Perhaps you are the person Gemmie has been waiting for all this while! To visit Gemmie and see if you click, call 207-985-3073. Last weekend’s book sale at our IGA thrift shop was a big hit. With book donations still pour-

23

ing in, we’re repeating our book sale this weekend. We’d also love more donations of ladies and men’s clothing, housewares, and useful and decorative items for the home. Thank you!

KITTERY The loyalty of Labs. The steadfastness of greyhounds. The fierce affection of a Bichon Frise. When it comes to love, no creature shows it like a dog. Starting March 13, Stage Force celebrates all things canine with “Dogs and Lesser Mortals a theatrical evening of music, poetry, stories and scenes from contemporary wits to the legends of literature. Learn the true meaning of the exotic dance your terrier does for dinner. Share the burden of policing poop. Find out what your mutt is really thinking when he watches you make love. “Dogs is a joyful romp through what a dog’s life means to us – and what ours means to them – from clowning to companionship, from grief to the hope for a better life. Produced in partnership with the Cocheco Valley Humane Society and the NHSPCA, performances of “Dogs and Lesser Mortals will be introduced with help from featured rescue dogs, and those interested in adopting will be able to meet eligible pupsin-need on the Kittery Community Center grounds during the run. “Dogs and Lesser Mortals features the talents of Jamie Bradley, Christine Dulong, Andy Fling, CJ Lewis, Jessica Miller,

and Ryan Salvato, with original music by CJ Lewis. Playing March 13-22 at the STAR Theatre, 120 Rogers Road, Kittery. Shows Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sundays at 3 p.m. Tickets $25-$30. Kids ages 8-12 are only $1 each with purchase of an adult ticket. Reserve at kitterycommunitycenter.org, call 207-439-3800, or in person at the Kittery Community Center. OGUNQUIT Great Works Regional Land Trust (GWRLT) members and other partners conserve land and protect habitat for humans and other species to thrive. Sometimes, it takes special “ambassadors to help send this message soaring. At the GWRLT Annual Meeting February 26, Center for Wildlife staff featured four wildlife ambassadors, representing area animals that are on the brink of becoming endangered. Kristin Lamb, Executive Director, and Emily Calhoun, Education and Outreach Coordinator, engaged the audience with their ambassadors in a live presentation, “Adaptation and

Extinction: Wildlife in a Changing Climate. They discussed evidence of local climate change and its effects on wildlife and delicate ecosystems, such as wetlands and vernal pools. Great Works also introduced its new Executive Director, Lisa Erickson-Harris, whose background is in conservation and business. She and other staff highlighted 2014 successes and challenges ahead, such as protection of additional farmlands and Mount Agamenticus parcels as well as wetlands within the endangered Salmon Falls River watershed. ~ News & Classifieds ~ ...AWARD from page 1 dividuals like environmental reporter Bob Cummings and wood duck champion James Dorso, and even Maine voters, who were recognized in 1980 for their commitment to conservation. Ogunquit is the first town to receive the award. The award’s focus on a commonplace activity like lawn and garden care is a departure that excited Down East editors. “Ogunquit residents are showing how simple it is for each one of us to have a positive impact on the environment and on public health, Fleury said. Four years ago, Ogunquit already had a ban on chemicals used on town-owned land when residents began expressing their

concern about the chemicals that were seeping into their land from neighboring properties. Through the efforts of concerned community members and the Ogunquit Conservation Commission, the ban was put to vote and passed in November 2014. Known largely for its pictur-

esque downtown and waterfront areas, the pesticide ban ensures Ogunquit’s natural beauty will remain intact, and the surrounding waterways clean. With workshops in natural turf management planned for the spring, Ogunquit has become a model for other environmental endeavors around the country.
