York Middle School XC Skier Takes First Place YORK On Saturday February 15, the Agamenticus Ski Club (ASC) York Middle School Ski Team – competed against 10 teams in Maine CCC MS Championship races at Starks Hill, Fryeburg. The Championship races included a 3.2 KM Skate Ski Race and a 3.2 KM Classic Ski Race on the same day. The courses included a flat section out of the start/finish with a steep climb followed by a descent and one additional climb/descent. Considering that the team has been challenged locally with a lack of snow and training on roller skis, dry land running and weekend on-snow sessions – they finished strong and made history with local eighth grader – Sam Hunter sweeping the Skate and Classic race in first place!

Hunter swept both races finishing in first place with a time of 10:05 in the skate race and 12:09 in the classic race. It was both the first time in the CCC Championship and ASC York Middle School Ski team’s history that a York MS Nordic Skier finished in first place in both events. Additional York MS racers that competed in the Saturday championship events included: In the boys skate races: Charles Newton finishing with a time of 14:32 in the skate, Callan Eves finishing with a time of 15:13, Kelton Bryant with a time of 21:43, Logan Schrimper with a time of 22:27 and Jameson Moore with a time of 23:50. In the girls skate races: Lucy Fullerton (independent See SKIING page 22...

What is a Census and Why is it Important? NATIONWIDE Once a decade, America comes together to count every resident in the United States, creating national awareness of the importance of the census and its valuable statistics. The decennial census was first taken in 1790, as mandated by the Constitution. It counts our population and households, providing the basis for reapportioning congressional seats, redistricting, and distributing more than $675 billion in federal funds annually to support states, counties and communities’ vital programs — impacting housing, education, transportation, employment, health care and public policy.

It is an economic engine for Maine, providing good jobs, supporting Maine vendors of goods and services, and strengthening our tourism industry,” said Senator Collins. “With this funding, the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority will be able to make important improvements to this rail line in southern and midcoast Maine, increasing the corridor’s capacity and improving safety, efficiency, and reliability for the hundreds of thousands of passengers who use this service each year.” Through this project,

~ News ~ South Berwick Helps Sister City Get Selected for “Home Town Takeover” SOUTH BERWICK South Berwick may not be competing to star in the television show, Home Town Takeover, but town residents have nonetheless been clicking and “liking” like crazy in hopes of helping their sister city in Alabama get selected. SoBo residents have been watching and supporting the video entry sent into the HGTV contest by the Chamber of Commerce in Tuskegee, Ala. “I would love to see our sister city get this recognition and assistance from a nationally recognized show like this,” said Lisa Jones of South Berwick. Towns across the country were invited to send in video presentations to compete to be the location of a six-episode special airing in 2021 on HGTV called, “Home Town Takeover.”

Jones and others from Maine who are supporting Tuskegee’s bid for the spot expressed a feeling that the growing relationship between the communities gives South Berwick a stake in seeing Tuskegee chosen. “As we have gotten to know our friends in Tuskegee, we keep learning how much our communities have in common,” said Jones, who liked, watched and shared the video. “A love for our towns – the people, the history, all of it – that is one of the biggest things we share.” South Berwick and Tuskegee in 2017 became the first and only domestic sister cities in the nation. Residents from the two towns have visited each others’ communities and become becoming enamored with what the other had to offer. “In my visits to Tuskegee, I come to love and respect this

city more than a thousand miles away,” said Rachel Martin of South Berwick, who went with eight other Mainers on the first delegation down to Alabama in December 2017. Besides visiting the Tuskegee Airmen Historic Site and the local Tuskegee History Center, the South Berwick travelers saw a downtown with a beautiful central square, a few operating businesses and many shuttered buildings. They also saw

how much the city, suffering the aging common to many US downtowns, could benefit from a takeover. According to Karin Hopkins, director of the Tuskegee Area Chamber of Commerce, the number of clicks on the HGTV video entry took off after South Berwick started sharing and promoting the video. She is grateful for this support and also confident about her community’s intrinsic assets. “Many people come to Tuskegee and fall in love with our history, heritage and resilience,” Hopkins said. “We featured all of this in the video with hopes that it would resonate favorably with our producers of HGTV Home Town.” Towns that apply to be in the special must have population of under 40,000. Applicants were encouraged to showcase what makes their town “special, fascinating, historic or unique - including distinctive features like vintage period architecture, special destinations or a classic main street.” The show will be a spinoff of HGTV’s “Home Town” series, hosted by Ben and Erin Napier. The six-episode special of “Home Town Takeover” will let the Napiers help bring another community back to life.

Third-grade students read quotes about kindness to the whole school each morning. Challenges included playing with new friends at recess, thanking bus drivers, thanking cafeteria staff, sending kind notes, and being kind to ourselves. Many students and staff were “caught being kind” and recognized by notes shared on the Kindness Wall. Cafeteria staff even wrote “Be Kind” on the bananas! ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ White Pine Programs Reignites Popular Naturalist Nights YORK White Pine Programs is excited to bring to the community a monthly series of handson “Naturalist Nights” starting on March 10. Beginning with a pot-luck dinner and a chance to connect with each other, participants will then engage in classroom or field study led by White Pine staff naturalists and mentors. Come for one or more of these fun, engaging experiences featuring a dive deep into topics ranging from wildlife tracking and backyard birding to spring ephemeral flowers. “The Greater Seacoast has supported White Pine for more than 20 years,” said Executive Director, Heather Campbell. “Free programming like Naturalist Nights allows us to say ‘thank you’ our friends, neighbors, and supporters,” she continued. “While we have grown

to serve more than 2,000 children, youth and adults annually across 270 days of programs, we continue to seek ways to reach more people through the power of nature connection. Research is clear that repeated time outside, led by caring mentors, positively impacts mental and physical health and fosters a lifelong environmental consciousness. We see cultivating these positive impacts on society as a critical component of our mission.” Naturalist Night topics and dates are as follows: Wildlife Tracking, March 10; Spring Ephemerals, April 7; Backyard Birding, May 12; and Vernal Pools, June 9. All details, including how to register, can be found at www.whitepineprograms.com under “Adult Programming”. For more information, call 207361-1911.

Irish Music in West Kennebunk WEST KENNEBUNK Get a jump on the St. Patrick’s Day crowds with a concert of outstanding Irish traditional music on Sunday, March 8, at the West Kennebunk United Methodist Church. Christian “Junior” Stevens, Alden Robinson, and Miles Isacke—three of the leading Irish musicians in southern Maine—will perform from 3-5 p.m. at the WKUMC, 160 Alfred Road, in West Kennebunk. Alden Robinson is a popular performer and dance musician throughout New England and other parts of the country. He, along with Junior Stevens, was a longtime member of the traditional Irish band the Press Gang. Miles Isacke plays with a rhythmic and driving guitar style, drawing on influences from a range of traditional Irish players. He is also an accomplished and powerful tenor banjo player. He has performed with many excellent traditional music groups, including the Hanz Araki Band, and Skipper’s Alley. The concert, which is part of the church’s outreach and fund-raising efforts, takes place Sunday, March 8 from 3-5 p.m. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. Admission is by donation at the door. YORK On Sunday, February 9, members of the York Equestrian Team competed at a Regional Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) horse show in Byfield, MA. Over 174 rides were analyzed by IEA judges as riders competed in both team and individual classes to advance to Zone I Finals held March 28-29 at The Big E in Springfield, MA. Congratulations to the York Equestrian Middle School Team

represented by Elle McDaniel of Eliot, Ivy Landry of South Berwick, Katie Plaisted of Berwick, and Lilly Leonhard of York, for winning their competitions and being named Regional Champions – as well as 9th grader Sara Plaisted for winning all first place ribbons and qualifying to advance to Zone I Finals! Other highlights included a fourth place finish by Madison Hurley of Portland and second places earned by Élise Handy of Scar-

borough and Posie Price of Cape Elizabeth. The York Equestrian Team is comprised of middle and high school-aged students from southern Maine. Current co-captains Meg Brewer and Posie Price, both from Cape Elizabeth, explained that students who are interested in joining the York Equestrian Team are not required to have their own horse, as IEA hosting barns provide mounts and tack for all competitions and riders draw the horse they ride at random the morning of each show. BUSINESS & FINANCE Social Security Benefit Statement

Tax season is approaching, and the Social Security Administration has made replacing annual Benefit Statements even easier. The Benefit Statement, also known as the SSA-1099 or the SSA-1042S, is a tax form mailed to those who receive Social Security benefits. It shows the total amount of benefits received in the previous year so beneficiaries know how much Social Security income to report to the IRS on tax returns. If you live in the United States and you need a replacement form SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S, simply go online and get an instant, printable replacement form using your personal my Social Security

account at www.socialsecurity. gov/myaccount. A replacement SSA-1099 or SSA-1042S is available for the previous tax year after February 1. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, Read your column every week & love it, have learned from it! I know how strongly you feel about backing up ones files. Is a 2nd external hard drive a good back-up for my 1st external hard drive, or am I being redundant? Gary Dear Gary, The reason I feel so strongly about backing up ones files is because I have seen how devastated people are when they realize that their photos or work documents are gone. If your files are important to you, you need to take care of them. I like to keep my files in

three locations: 1. On my computer; 2. On an external hard drive that is connected to my computer; 3. In a remote location that is not connected to my computer. The first two locations protect me from hard drive failure, which is still fairly common. The third, remote location, protects me from fire, flood, theft, natural disaster, and a type of nasty malware called, ransomware. If your files are already on your computer, and also on an external hard drive, putting them on another external hard drive won’t help much, unless you are keeping one of the external drives in a different physical

location. You could use two external hard drives, and rotate them, keeping one at another location and switching them every week. An easier offsite backup would be one of the backup services like Carbonite. I’m glad you are thinking about backing up, many people don’t until it is too late. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have Windows 10. Sometimes I want to rearrange the pictures in my own order in a folder. When I had Win XP I could do that by dragging the pictures around with my mouse. However, in Win 10, it won’t allow

me to move the pictures around so they will stay. If I right click in the picture folder, it says I may sort them by Name, Date, Type, Size, and Tags, and other parameters. However, I usually don’t want to sort ALL of them a certain way – I just want to move one picture closer to another that is a similar looking picture and have them stay that way in the folder. What do I have to do to allow me to freely move a picture close or in between another picture in the same folder without changing the sorting structure of all of them? Thanks, Brian

Unfortunately, there is no way to rearrange your pictures by dragging and dropping. Really, the only way you can do this is to re-name the image files, then sort them by name. I would suggest that if you want to move one picture closer to another, rename the picture you want to go after another one, give it the same name as the first, but with an extra letter or number at the end. For example, if you have a list of pictures named, pic001, pic002, pic 003 and so on, and you want pic015 to show up right after pic003, right-click on

Coronavirus Sparks Worldwide Concern The dawn of 2020 ushered in many newsworthy headlines, but few have turned the heads of the masses as sharply as the arrival of a novel coronavirus that was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. In late 2019, Chinese authorities identified the new virus, which has resulted in scores of confirmed cases in China, and additional cases identified in a growing number of international loca-

tions. Both the World Health Organization and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have closely monitored the coronavirus, which was named COVID-19 in mid-February 2020. The public is understandably concerned, but educating oneself about COVID-19 and coronaviruses in general can assuage some fears. What is a coronavirus?

Medical News Today reports that coronaviruses typically affect the respiratory tracts of mammals. Coronaviruses are responsible for between 15 and 30 percent of common colds. They’re also associated with pneumonia and severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS. Coronaviruses were given their name based on the crownlike projections on their surfaces (in Latin, “corona” means “halo” or “crown”). Coronavirus antibodies do not last or work for very long, so a person who becomes ill can catch the same virus again a few months later. Also, antibodies for one strain of coronavirus may not be effective against other strains. What is COVID-19? In 2019, a new type of coronavirus not previously identified was discovered in China. Like other coronaviruses, this virus, COVID-19, can be spread easily from person to person, particularly through respiratory droplets acquired when someone with the virus coughs or sneezes. Most often people need to be within six feet of the infected person for contraction. The CDC says that COVID-19 also is believed to be spread from animals to people. It’s currently unclear if a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching his oer her own mouth, nose or eyes. Those confirmed as having the virus reported illnesses ranging from mild symptoms like fever, cough and shortness of breath to more severe illness. Reactions to COVID-19 can differ from individual to individ-

However, research into antiviral drugs, such as those for HIV and influenza, are being tested for their potential efficacy against COVID-19, Research into developing a vaccine for this novel coronavirus also is ongoing. Concerned individuals should speak with their healthcare providers for accurate, up-to-date information about COVID-19 as global health organizations continue to monitor conditions and treatments.

Prevention and Treatment The WHO says that if a person is healthy, he or she only needs to wear a mask if this person is taking care of another with a suspected COVID-19 infection. One also should wear a mask if he or she is coughing or sneezing. Doctors advise that frequent handwashing, and in the absence of warm, soapy water, alcohol-based sanitizers that are at least 60 percent alcohol can be effective in preventing transmission of COVID-19. Also avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Currently there is no spe-

Health & Fitness Why are all Four Wisdom Teeth Removed? Many people have had their wisdom teeth removed. When people discuss wisdom tooth extraction with their healthcare professionals, it’s not uncommon for them to wonder why all four teeth must be removed, especially if only one tooth or even none of the teeth are causing any pain or are in...COMPUTER from page 19 pic015 and rename it pic003b. Once you have renamed it, the picture will be arranged right after pic003. Hopefully, this will help you. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Recently, You have been answering questions about Windows 10. My question is do you have to have a touch screen monitor for Windows 10? Thanks, Maxine

fected at the time of surgery. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the location of wisdom teeth at the back of the mouth make it difficult for people to keep them free from plaque and food. Wisdom teeth also may trap harmful bacteria that can contribute to gum disease, decay and infection. By removing all four wisdom teeth, surgeons can greatly reduce this risk. But some

may wonder why a less proactive approach is not recommended. For example, those who are less than enthusiastic about having their wisdom teeth removed may wonder why they cannot simply wait to see if the teeth do not cause any problems once they grow in, and then just keep them if no issues arise. While that’s within patients’ rights, extraction is often recommended when people are young because, at this stage in a person’s life, the wisdom teeth

are not completely formed. That means the surrounding bone is softer and the risk of damaging nerves or other nearby structures is smaller than it would be if the extraction is delayed until the wisdom teeth have fully formed.

By having all four wisdom teeth removed before adulthood, people are greatly reducing their risk of both surgical complications and consequences that can adversely affect their overall health.

Dear Maxine, No, you do not need a touch screen for Windows 10. While it is optimized for devices with touch screens, it will work equally well with a mouse. Actually, Windows 10 works better with a mouse than Windows 8 does. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I own a laptop, tablet and a smartphone. I have to delete emails three times. Is there a way to stop this? I would like to delete an email from any of the three sources and have the email deleted on the other two automatically. I use Gmail and my wife uses Yahoo. It is the same irritating problem on both systems. Thank you, John Dear John, There is a way to set this up in Gmail. On your laptop, you are directly connected to Gmail in your browser so there is no need to change anything there. If you install the Gmail app on your tablet and phone and use that instead of the built in email app, you will find that the email will stay in sync very nicely. When you delete an email message on your phone, within seconds it will also be deleted on your tablet and laptop. I don’t use Yahoo, so I don’t know if there is a Yahoo email app that does the same thing. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. To submit a question, email her at elizabeth.boston@gmail.com.

Betty D’Agostino, 96 YORK – Betty D’Agostino died peacefully at her daughter’s home in York on February 8, 2020. The daughter of Dudley and Matilda Willcox, Betty grew up in Lawrenceville, NJ. One of her favorite high school memories was sitting opposite Albert Einstein on the Trenton Transit Bus. Upon graduating from the College of William and Mary in 1945, Betty returned to New Jersey where she met Maurice Joseph D’Agostino (“Doc”), a Princeton graduate back from serving in WWII. Married in 1946, they raised three children and ran The Cranbury Inn. Over the years, many joyous times were spent at their summer home in NH. One of Betty’s favorite past times was to play the piano, especially Tuxedo Junction. After spending forty-four years in Cranbury, NJ, Betty moved to Maine in 1998 with her sister Mary. They enjoyed a comfortable cottage at Sentry Hill, joined the First Parish Church, and enjoyed many activities together. Betty is survived by two daughters Laurie Stoumen and family of California and Lucy Crowe and Caitlin of York and Portland, and special friend George Bushway. Although Betty experienced health setbacks later in life, nothing could dampen her positive attitude. When someone was in need, she extended a helping hand and cheerful thought. She was witty and made everyone laugh. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Varney Crossing, York Ambulance, and York Hospital Hospice for making the sunset of her life as pleasant as possible. Funeral services will be private. Should friends desire, in remembrance, please extend a ray of sunshine to someone in need, as Betty did throughout her long and happy life. • • • • • • • • • •

South Hadley, MA, where she spent the last 17 years of her life. Her son Paul lived nearby which was a great gift. Coming to New York City in 1939 for the World’s Fair, she was essentially stranded when the war broke out in Europe. Connected by the Hungarian community, she was recruited and taught the Hungarian language to GIs in Military Intelligence, meeting her future husband, Pierre Lambert (19212003), who was one of her students. Following the war, they spent two years in Iowa City as Pierre completed his doctorate, leading to life in Newton and then Needham, MA, while Pierre taught at Boston College for 40 years. It was in Newton and Needham where she and Pierre raised their children. She enjoyed a varied working career, including a treasured job at the Phonograph & Record Shop in Boston; time as the school librarian at Memorial School in Oak Hill Park; support positions in a doctor’s office; Shreve, Crump & Lowe; the Women’s Educational and Industrial Union; and various volunteer roles. For 50 years she also loved her house and life in Ogunquit. She became the beloved greeter at the Information Bureau, connecting with many tourists throughout the years. In Ogunquit, Pierre and Elizabeth enjoyed the theater, attended many art openings, or just sat by the beach. They opened their home to foreign students and new friends, and to many just wanting to visit the shores of Maine. Her bright blue eyes and warm spirit created a welcome space and home. Elizabeth is survived by her loving children in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine: daughter Susan with husband David Henry and son Lucas; son Paul with wife Cynthia and sons Benjamin and Peter and daughter Jacqueline with partner Jim Maxwell; and son Andrew with wife Alicia and daughter Emily. She will be dearly missed by a wide circle of loved ones who will remember and celebrate this remarkable, small, Hungarian woman who survived so much with her indomitable energy and spirit. Daniel John Marquis, 72 WELLS – Daniel John Marquis passed away peacefully on February 29, 2020, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. He was surrounded by his two sons and loving wife of 49 years. Dan was born the oldest son of 11 siblings. He is survived by all four of his brothers and four of his surviving sisters.

After high school Daniel proudly served in the U.S. Army within the 25th Infantry as an NCO (E-5) Tank Commander in Viet Nam from 1967-1968. He conducted and completed many combat missions in and around Cu Chi as well as within the Saigon Theater during the Tet Offensive of ’68. He earned several medals including the Army Commendation Medal for Merit, both of the Viet Nam Service and Campaign Medals, Expert Rifle, as well as the National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Marquis was a distinguished employee of Pratt & Whitney for over 35 years. As an athlete, Dan participated in his local CYU Basketball League and went on to be the Captain of three Championship UTC Softball Teams during the early 1980s. As a lover of golf, Dan could often be found competing with his colleagues of the Pratt & Whitney Golf League at the Links at Outlook Course in South Berwick. Dan was also a life-long outdoorsman who enjoyed both fishing and hunting with family and friends. Throughout a 41-year window, Dan was a dedicated fan to the Wells High School wrestling, football, and basketball teams. Like his father before him, he served his local Catholic Church as a 4th Degree Knight within the Knights of Columbus for over 30 years. In the last decade he served countless hours volunteering as an active member of the Viet Nam Veterans of America, Chapter 1044 Maine. A Catholic Memorial Ser-

vice will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 236 Eldridge Road, Wells, on Friday, March 20 at 9 a.m. Immediately after the service, a military burial will commence at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale at 11 a.m. A reception will follow for family and friends at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Hall, 12-2 p.m. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

~ News ~ Legislation to Strengthen National Defense Signed into Law WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a senior member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, announced that the fiscal year (FY) 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which authorizes $730 billion for national defense, has been signed into law. “Our state has an integral role in our national security thanks to the numerous Mainers who have answered the call to serve our nation in uniform and the thousands of hardworking Mainers who build and maintain our naval fleet, aircraft, and other military assets,” said Senator Collins. “This legislation is vitally important, not only for strengthening the defense of our nation, but also for bolstering our support for the brave men and women in our armed forces and ensuring that they have the equipment they need to carry out their missions effectively. I am particularly pleased that the NDAA authorizes the largest pay increase for our troops in a decade as well as an amendment I authored to help service members acquire the skills they need to obtain good-paying jobs

upon returning to civilian life.” Senator Collins advocated for a number of provisions that are important to Maine including: Repeal of the Widow’s Tax: Includes legislation authored by Senators Collins and Doug Jones (D-AL) to repeal the offset of Department and Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs survivor benefits, commonly referred to as the “Military Widow’s Tax.” DDG-51: Authorizes three DDGs for $5.03 billion. It also authorizes $260 million above the President’s budget request for advanced procurement (to accelerate purchase of long lead time materials). Frigate/FFG(X): Authorizes the procurement of the lead FFG(X), a class of multimission guided-missile frigates, for $1.28 billion. The contract for the next class of Navy frigates is expected to be awarded in 2020. F-35 Procurement: Authorizes 90 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft (all F-35As), which is 12 more than requested in the President’s budget. Engine components for the F-35 are made at Pratt & Whitney’s North Berwick facility.

~ Home & Business ~

CH-53K Procurement: Authorizes the procurement of six CH-53K Heavy Lift helicopters for the U.S. Marine Corps. The rotating drive shafts are a critical component of the aircraft and are produced at Hunting Dearborn’s facility in Fryeburg. Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS): Prohibits the Department of Defense (DoD) from procuring firefighting foam that contains PFAS/PFOA chemicals after October 2024, with an exception for shipboard use, and prohibits the uncontrolled release of fluorinated aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) and the use of AFFF in training exercises at

military installations. The agreement encourages the Secretary to finalize cooperative agreements with states to address contamination by these substances and authorizes the National Guard to use Defense Environmental Remediation Account funds for the purpose of addressing PFOS and PFOA exposure and contamination. Pay Raise: Authorizes a 3.1% pay raise for members of the Armed Forces, the largest pay increase in a decade, as well as an average pay raise of 3.1% for civilians. Paid Family Leave: Authorizes 12 weeks of paid parental

Apprenticeships: Senators Collins and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) sponsored a provision that would further expand the DoD Skillsbridge Program by allowing the inclusion of federal agencies as program participants. Currently, at the discretion of military commanders, DOD authorizes servicemembers transitioning to civilian life to carry out skills training, apprenticeships, and internship programs beginning up to six months before the completion of their military obligation. This program allows service members to receive job training that eases the transition to civilian life and can lead to full-time civilian jobs.
