Radio Icon Woos Ogunquit

By Maura Curley Special to the Sentinel OGUNQUIT Reunions can be extraordinary, when we meld memories with the provocative present. When I first heard his voice over the phone; seasoned with age, but still strong with that unmistakable authority, I was reunited with my younger self, growing up on Boston’s north shore. I was suddenly sitting in my brother’s old Ford on a Sunday night, listening to “Night Train” on WMEX radio. We’d feast on Hostess cupcakes and Coke, and let

Arnie “Woo-Woo” Ginsburg introduce us to the latest rock and roll. Recently I learned the iconic Arnie of my youth, was a neighbor (sort of) in Ogunquit, so I decided to give him a call to talk about those days – and now. After seven decades in broadcasting, with legions of loyal fans, and a nice life here, Ginsburg wasn’t looking for any publicity. Yet our phone conversation grew increasingly interesting, and a half hour later he welcomed me into his cottage on Shore Road. He gave

me explicit directions, but it was the “woo” on the car in the driveway that directed me to his door. (The “woo” originated from a train whistle he sounded on his show, followed by a bevy of other sound effects.) Arnie Ginsburg was to radio broadcasting what Mark Zuckerberg is to social media. Ginsburg revolutionized our relationship with radio, and fostered a generation’s affinity for rock and roll. “I never wanted to do anything else, but radio,” Ginsburg See GINSBURG page 16...

Creator of America’s Bellamy Eagles focus in Kittery KITTERY James Craig, author of the new book entitled “American Eagle: The Bold Art & Brash Life of John Haley Bellamy” and curator of the upcoming exhibit of carvings by Bellamy at Discover Portsmouth, will be the featured speaker at the March 11 at the meeting of the Kittery Historical Society. exhibit is anticipated to be the largest collection of Bellamy carvings ever assembled - over 100 pieces. It will include seven examples from the Kittery Museum’s own collection on loan for the summer. Widely considered to be the pinnacle of American woodcarving, the Bellamy eagle vies with such hallowed icons as the Statue of Liberty, the Great Seal, and Old Glory. Yet what of its creator? Who was the man responsible

for giving flight to this most celebrated piece of Americana? Recounting more than five years of investigative findings, author Craig answers these and other questions concerning the art and life of the immortal John Haley Bellamy, Kittery’s favorite son and America’s greatest woodcarver. This free presentation begins at 7p.m. For more information, contact Kittery Historical and Naval Society at kitterymuseum@netzero.net.

Just Us Chickens Presents Seacoast Fabric Artists

Colorful fabric art by sisters Gail Henderson and Donna Kelly is on display at Just Chickens Gallery in Kittery. (Image by Gail Henderson courtesy Just Chicken Gallery)

The colors of nature are her inspiration. She discovered a crazy quilt pattern a few years ago and adapted it into the current mini art quilts displayed at the gallery. She combines sewing with beads, shells, driftwood, bits of pottery and other found objects. Kelly, who currently lives in North Hampton, N.H., began her exploration of art as a pottery student at High Mowing School in Wilton, N.H. Throughout her life she has explored art in many forms, always with the purpose of complementing the original beauty found in nature. Kelly

KITTERY Sisters Gail Henderson and Donna Kelly have combined their interests in art, working with different textures and fabrics and a love for the New England countryside to create inspired and colorful fabric art on display at Just Us Chickens Gallery in Kittery. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, March 8 from 2p.m. to 5p.m. Henderson, who lives in North Berwick has been creating with color most of her adult life through sewing, quilting, beading, photography and collages.

Cinema Paradiso Screened in Ogunquit OGUNQUIT After watching Cinema Paradiso one critic exclaimed: “This is what all movies should be about…Terrific!” Ogunquit Performing Arts is offering an opportunity for the public to view this great film on Sunday, March 9 at 2p.m. at the Dunaway Center, 23 School Street in Ogunquit. The screening is part of a classic film series, and will be shown on a full wall-size screen using projection equipment provided by Kennebunk Savings Bank.

If ever a movie came from the heart, it was Giuseppe Tornatore’s nostalgic Cinema Paradiso (1988). A successful but jaded film director recalls his Sicilian childhood: He was a cheeky scamp called Totò (Salvatore Cascio) helping out in the cinema booth, learning to love movie magic while becoming a friend to the old projectionist Salvatore (Philippe Noiret). The action occurs in a special place where the interior is designed to look like a church, with an altar under the screen. A local priest censored

the movies. In 1990 Cinema Paradiso received both the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film and the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film. The Classic Film Series program will continue showing one film each month through May 2014. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. ways to focus on health in the upcoming months, including paying more attention to dental hygiene. Proper dental care can not only keep a smile bright, it can affect other areas of the body. Fluoride Benefits One of the keys to oral health is the use of fluoride to prevent dental caries. In fact, many health professionals will say that exposure to fluoride, whether through use of toothpaste or fluoridated water supplies, is probably the most effective cavity-prevention treatment available. Fluoride helps the teeth in a number of ways. Fluoride can promote tooth remineralization. This means it attracts other minerals, particularly calcium, to the areas of the teeth where tooth decay can form, helping to strengthen teeth. Fluoride also helps to make teeth more resistant to decay. New tooth mineral created when fluoride is present helps to make teeth harder, making it more difficult for acids and bacteria to penetrate the enamel of the teeth and cause damage. Another advantage is that fluoride helps to inhibit acid creation. Dental researchers have found that fluoride can inhibit bacteria living in the mouth. That’s an important finding, as such bacteria can contribute to the formation of damage-causing acids that are notorious for wearing down tooth enamel, causing spots for more bacteria to congregate and form cavities. According to the American Dental Association, individuals who find themselves prone to cavities or whose dentists have deemed them at elevated risk for developing cavities may benefit from fluoride application beyond the norm. This may include prescription fluoride applied directly to the teeth at home or procedures where dentists apply the fluoride in their offices. Recent clinical recommendations from a multi-disciplinary expert panel convened by the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs suggest that topical fluoride, used in conjunction with drinking optimally fluoridated water and using toothpaste with fluoride, can prevent tooth decay. These clinical recommendations cover professionally applied and prescription-strength, home-use topical See DENTAL page 13...

It is still vital to brush twice a day, floss daily, eat a balanced diet, and visit the dentist regularly for checkups. BUSINESS & FINANCE Why It Pays to Graduate

Graduation ceremonies and other events that mark the end of a school year are rife with tradition. Students know it is important to receive their

diplomas but may not have a full understanding of why that piece of paper can help open so many doors. Diplomas date back to some of the earliest schools,

but were also conferred upon land owners in ancient times by kings and other authority figures. Some military personnel were also given diplomas to signal land grants that were not subject to taxes. Nowadays diplomas take on a different meaning and vary depending on where one lives in the world. Graduates who complete a specific course of study are issued diplomas. Diplomas were once written on Italian sheepskin. Although “diploma” translates to “folded papers,” paper was not always an economically viable medium for

Receiving a degree or diploma can be a point of pride in families where older members may not have had the same educational opportunities as younger members. Many people move to North America for the educational opportunities, and a diploma can symbolize taking advantage of those opportunities. who have a high school diploma or less. The United States Department of Education says high school graduation rates have increased since the 20062007 school year. Around 80 percent of student who enter high school now earn a regular or advanced diploma. Dropout rates are on the decline, and a growing number of high school students continue on to two- or four-year degrees. In Canada, numbers are quite similar. Canada is second only to the United States in the high school completion rate of its working-age population. Statistics Canada says that enrollment in Canadian universities continues to increase. Enrollments are now approximately 5 percent larger than they were just a few years ago. Community colleges are benefitting from this influx of students. Various statistics from the 2010-2011 year point to more than eight million American students enrolled in community colleges at that time. Volunteers Celebrated at Kennebunk Savings KENNEBUNK Recently Kennebunk Savings officials took some time to celebrate those employees who are dedicated volunteers. The 2013 tally determined that employees of the company contributed 7,500 hours of service to nearly 200 different organizations Every year Kennebunk Savings’ employees are given eight hours of paid time to volunteer at a nonprofit organization of their choice. Staff members volunteer everywhere from their children’s classrooms to food pantries, animal welfare groups, churches, local libraries and community centers. Many employees also work together to deliver Meals on Wheels, participate in walk-a-thon fundraisers, or help out at various area events such as Harvestfest in York or Apple

FUNERAL HOME Somersworth, NH

says, recalling his days as child of three or four years old, being fascinated with that new invention. Ginsburg, now 87, was born in 1926, when radio was in its infancy. “It was the days when you hooked your radio up to a car battery”, he observes. Ginsberg liked to tinker with radios, and got his first class engineer’s license while still in high school. His initial job was behind the scenes, but colleagues encouraged him to go on the air as a disk jockey. “They thought I was funny”, he recalls, noting that he became an “instant success.” The height of his on-air career was his stint at WMEX, a Boston “Top 40” radio station. During this period he became a rock guru playing songs by artists such as The Everly Brothers, Bobby Darin, The Temptations The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Blood Sweat and Tears, Rod Stewart and The Bee Gees. Not only did he play these hits from the “fabulous fifties” “swinging sixties” and “super seventies”, he emceed live performances on local stages, including shows by The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Ginsburg’s on air influence extended beyond music. He delivered customers to the station’s advertisers, where he injected his persona and could make a product’s sales soar. Legend has it that as many as 2,000 teens flocked to Adventure Car Hop on Route1 in Saugus Massachusetts on a weekend night to order the “Ginsburger”. “The twist was popular then, and the burger had an onion peeled like a twist,” he explains with a smile. Ginsburg, says the radio signal for his show extended beyond Boston, up the coast to Bangor, where he says, “Stephen King grew up listening to

me.” It’s no surprise Ginsburg was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Museum of Radio and Records in 1998 and the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He has been named one of all time top 12 disc jockeys in the United States. In later years Ginsburg became involved in station management and ownership, including WSME in Sanford and Kiss 108. He also formed a group to launch V-66, Boston’s video music channel WVJVTV. (According to Ginsburg V-66 is the subject of an upcoming documentary.) Some say Ginsburg retired to Ogunquit, but the village has been in his blood as much as radio. He says he spent 86 summers here, coming first with his grandparents when Route 1 was farmland. He has had his charming cottage on Shore Road for 40 years. It is his oasis, set off a bit from the street with trees and the Ogunquit river running near the French doors leading to the backyard. He finds it peaceful, even in the height of the tourist season. (He does acknowledge some locals holler “woo-woo” when they pass by.) Meeting Arnie Ginsburg in person was a treat. He looks older, with his mop of white hair, than most of his pictures. But the glint is his eye tells a story of a life still well lived. He’s proud of his accomplishments, but appears more enthusiastic about his experiences. He exudes a joi d’vivre, still engaged, with people and piñones, his pet chihuahua, who faithfully fetches every ball he throws. Ginsburg says he listens to radio these days when he’s in the car, but doesn’t usually play records and reminisce. “I’m busy with other things now,” he says matter of factly.

NORTH BERWICK Meet Remi Remi is a one-year-old declawed neutered male kitten. He is a really handsome guy, sporting a soft gray and white tiger jacket. He came to us from a young woman who was leaving the area and could not take her furry buddy with her. Remi is a little shell shocked about being uprooted, but is adjusting to the reality of a new life. Remi will do best in a quiet environment with either an older couple or a single person in a low energy setting. He is seeking an indoor only life style where he can feel safe and secure. He is current on all necessary vaccinations, has been wormed, and passed his wellness exam. If you think that you could provide a loving reasonable quiet home for this sweet gentle, young guy, Remi would like to meet you. In addition to our fea-

tured pet of the week, Remi, the rescue still has a nice selection of young adult cats, adult cats and growing number of older adult cats. Adoption hours are Saturday 10a.m. to 2p.m and by appointment during the week at 37 Market Street in the village of North Berwick.

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Kitties Waiting for Adoption in Kennebunk Safe Haven Humane Society urges you to visit St. David’s Episcopal Church, Route. 1, in Kennebunk, this Saturday March 8 from 10a.m. to 3p.m. You’ll meet some of Safe Haven’s adorable adoptables. We appreciate St. David’s Carolyn Gowdy hosting this event to help homeless kitties find great homes. Carolyn is an enthusiastic soul who keeps St. David’s thrift shop, The Budget Box, an active satellite location for Safe Haven’s kitties. Thanks to Carolyn’s diligence and passion, many kitties have found happy homes. We’re happy to announce that Mischief has been adopted. He’s the kitty who was found in

Springvale, dragging his hind leg behind him. The poor guy racked up $3,000 in medical bills to mend his broken bones. He faced a lot of medical complications, but now he’s part of a family with lots of company: children, other cats and dog friends. We celebrate another adoption of three feral kittens by Sandy and Skip McLeod. They’d called Safe Haven wanting to adopt two kittens and ended up adopting three feral kittens needing patience, love and socializing. Sandy and Skip are some of

WEST KENNEBUNK Coal Meet Coal, a 1-year old Labrador mix. Coal is a very rugged and big friendly dog. He loves going for hikes, walks, runs, or just exploring outdoors. This active fellow enjoys playing. He’s an expert at catching Frisbees. Coal would be happy to share a new home with some other dogs and older, active children who can handle his size and energy. He would prefer not to live with any cats. Reiko Meet Reiko, a six-year old short-haired cat. Reiko is FiV+,

the feline equivalent of being HiV+. There is currently no treatment or medication for the disease. humans, Each cat handles the disease differently and has the potential to live a long life with no visible problems. But he is contagious to other cats, so he would have to be the only cat in a new home. Reiko is a kind and handsome fellow. He’s happy to get attention from his people and loves spending time napping in a cozy spot Reiko would be happy to share a new home with gentle children who will let him relax. By D.B. Bostdorf Special to The Weekly Sentinel Do you think squirrels fatten their tummies, get into their nests, roll up in a ball and hibernate for the winter? They don’t. Squirrels are active little buggers, who have been cavorting across the thick coat of this winter’s white. And, believe it or not, they even snorkel in the snow. Earlier this season, I began indulging in squirrel theater, viewing the neighborhood’s gray and red species fighting over the fistfuls of peanuts I threw out in the biggest animal lovers we’ve met yet. They knew it would take lots of time and patience before these feral kittens would be the cuddlebugs they wanted, but their priority was the welfare of the kittens. For all our latest stories and photos, visit Facebook at https:// www.facebook.com/safehavenhumanesociety/.

the yard. I placed their booty on patches of brown earth. They would approach cautiously, grab a few munchies and scamper away. After a few weeks my yard was overrun with squirrels: big gray males, smaller females, and even a rare red one, puny, but lightening fast. I began to look forward to their theatrics as I sipped my morning coffee and checked my email. It went like this: One gray squirrel chases another. Then the red squirrel sneaks up and starts eating the nuts, while the other two are distracted. But then the gray squirrels discover the peanuts are missing, stop dead in their tracks, and chase after the red squirrel. Amazingly, a fourth squirrel sneaks up while those three are chasing each other wildly and steals more nuts. I have had tears of laughter watching this. It makes engaging entertainment for those of us suffering from cabin fever.

A squirrel comes up for air after a snow snorkel. (Photo courtesy National Wildlife Federation)

But then the snow last week completely covered the few bare patches in my yard. The morning after the storm looked like the Antarctic, with massive piles of icy stuff plowed into mini mountains. I figured the squirrels knew better than to risk sliding along the icy terrain. I assumed they’d retreat to their burrows to sleep for a couple of days, leaving the peanuts in their subterranean hideaway. Boy was I wrong. Engaged at my computer, I noticed action outside the corner of my eye. A squirrel leapt off a tree trunk, dove down into the snow, snorkeled his way around and emerged with a peanut in his mouth! Soon a smaller specimen joined him, and another tiny squirrel arrived. He took a leap of faith and dove in as well, although the depth soon made him realize this could be his folly. He quickly popped back up and went to the safety of my back porch where I had just put out a nutty new stash. I have never seen snorkeling squirrels before. I’ve have lived and worked in Caribbean marveling at the high altitude precision dives of See SQUIRREL page 23...

it to get closer to the scent.” These little scavengers can make hundreds of caches. They recover most of the nuts while the remainder occasionally germinates. My grandfather Clyde Daniel Boone was a descendant of Daniel Boone. When I was growing up, my grandfather told me all sorts of stories about fishing and wildlife. But he never mentioned anything about a snowy squirrely spectacle. Nearly five decades later, I get to see my first snow snorkeling squirrel.

I think back during those years exploring the woods with my Grandpa Boone. I wish he were alive now to share a “snorkeling squirrel” moment with me. He would have laughed harder than I have. I’m going to share this story with my son. I suppose I could embellish it a bit. Perhaps adding that I discovered a set of tiny fins or a minuscule air pipe in the snow. But for the time being this is just a simple squirrel story. Nothing fishy about it!

...SQUIRREL from page 22 pelicans plunging into the waves, and coming up with a mouthful of fish. But I never imagined squirrels snorkeling in the snow. I decided to do a little research to verify my imagination wasn’t in overdrive. According to the Maryland Department of Natural resources the eastern gray squirrel can be seen all year, “even digging through snow in intense cold to retrieve buried nuts.” It said “squirrels can smell buried nuts under a foot of snow; when snow is deep, the squirrel tunnels under

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer lady, I use Firefox, Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail. I’d like to know if there is a setting in Mail that would allow me to read my messages, press the links in the e-mail, but stay in Mail? Each time I press a link it takes me directly to Firefox. I’d like to read my messages in a batch and then check out the Internet when I’m done. It is annoying to have to keep clicking back and forth. I hope you can help me out. Deidre Dear Deidre, It sounds like your computer is working the way that it should. Windows Live Mail is a program for reading email messages. It is not a web browser, so

when you click on a link in an email message, your computer switches to your web browser, which in your case is Firefox. There is no setting that would allow you to stay in Windows Live Mail (WLM) when you click on a link because the links lead to a web page, and WLM is not capable of displaying web pages. I hope this helps answer your computer question. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been using Carbonite for the past few months but I had a problem that I thought Carbonite would have saved me from but it did not. I had a virus (or something) that caused a number of my files to get corrupted. When, I went to Carbonite to

recover my files I found that the corrupted files had been backed up over my good files. Many of these backup services only save one copy of your files. Do you know of any backup services that do periodic backups and keep any prior backups? I have begun doing backups on my external hard drive more often as a result of the problem I ran into. I would like something automated if possible. Thanks for your help and advice. ~ Debbie Dear Debbie, When you need to recover an earlier version of a file that has been backed up with Carbonite, you can do so with the following directions: 1. Locate the file you want to restore on your computer 2. Right-click on the file. 3. In the context menu, point to, “Carbonite” then click: “Restore previous versions...” 4. A window with available previous versions will appear. Click on the version you want to restore, and click, “OK” to restore the file.

Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been saving recipes and DIY projects in Microsoft OneNote 2010 and was wondering if there is a way to alphabetize them? It would make it handier. Thanks, Judy Dear Judy, There is not a way to automatically alphabetize the pages in your notebooks. But you can, drag to tabs for the pages into any order that you desire. You can also group pages together. Right click on a page, and click: “Make Subpage” to nest the page under the page above it. Subpages, they can be hidden or revealed by clicking the arrow to the right of the page tab. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I hope you can supply an answer to an irritating problem on my computer. Whenever I play “Words with Friends” an ad from Zynga always comes on, and then I have to wait until I can make a play. Is there any way to block or delete these ads? I cannot seem to find anything that would help get rid of them.

Thank you so much and have a great day! Mary Dear Mary, I think it depends on what device you are using to play “Words With Friends”. If you are using a tablet, such as an iPad or an android tablet, you can purchase “Words With Friends” and the ads will go away. I purchased “Words With Friends” on my iPad for just 99 cents and no longer have to wait for the ads. If you are playing the game on Facebook, I don’t think you can make the ads go away. SPORTS Marshwood High Alpine Ski Team Ends Season Strong SOUTH BERWICK In spite of a shaky start with cancelled practices and meets, the Marshwood High alpine ski team had a superb year on the slopes. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams took first place at the Southern Maine Activity Association (SMAA) Class A Division Championship races February 24th at Shawnee Peak in Bridgton, Maine. Then at the Maine State Class A finals on February 27 and March 1st the boys and girls teams both finished in 4th place. Reflecting on their season, skiers, parents and the coach agreed that it was a year of growth and a great experience.

Twin sisters Hannah and Brittany Bossi, both seniors on the team, enjoyed their successes but regretted to see the season end. “My last season as a skier came up way too quickly; I definitely wasn’t ready for it to end,” said Hannah. “We were kind of a young team when I first started and it was really great to see us grow and we were ready compete with the big schools and the big names.” “It’s been an amazing season for my last season,” said her sister Brittany. “It’s been so wonderful; I can’t even imagine being on a better team.” “We started off shaky but as the season went through, we

amped up every single race and by the end we were just cruising,” she added. “The SMAA were a wonderful thing to accomplish…Both teams coming in first; that’s incredible. We’ve done so much better than any of

Fourteen Division III teams competed at this meet. The girls team finished third overall while the boys were able to bring home a trophy with a second place standing. The team dropped 60 seconds from its top times. Abby Donaghue, Kieran Friel

and Teddy Vatcher had the largest time drops. There were nine first place finishes, four second place finishes and one third place finish. Seven meet records were broken and Isabel Reis earned the illustrious Robertson Award for Division III.

Berwick Acedemy Girls’ Basketball SOUTH BERWICK -

The Berwick girls gave top seeded Kimball Union a scare in the Quarterfinal round of the NEPSAC tournament, but in the end KUA prevailed 51-33. Berwick ends its

season with a mark of 18-7. KUA continues on with a record of 17-5. The Lady Bulldogs trailed 27-15 at the half, but closed to within six points at 34-28 with seven minutes to play. Kimball Union gathered itself, and outscored Berwick 17-5 to close out the game. The free throw line was key in this one, as KUA shot 15 of 20 at the charity stripe, while Berwick made only 2 of 6 attempts. Maggie Duchene led Berwick with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Both Becca Siegel and Torie St. Pierre added 6. KUA will play Beaver Country Day in the semifinals.
