At the end of the performance, the dancers will invite children and the young at heart to join them onstage to learn or try out some steps. A reception with refreshments will conclude the evening. The Stillson School of Irish Dance/Performance Team is under the direction of Carlene Moran Stillson. In existence for twenty-five years, the school is

the only certified school of Irish dancing in the state of Maine. The school’s dancers compete all over New England and place in the New England Regional Irish Dancing Championships annually. In addition to the dance performance, Carlene Stillson will tell about the history of the dance and explain the reasons for the design of the many different costumes worn by the dancers. Traditional Irish dress is represented in the school dress which features embroidery designs taken from See IRISH page 4...

In Search of Berwick’s Oldest Citizen

BERWICK In the Summer of 1909, Mr. Edwin A. Grozier, publisher of the Boston Post newspaper, distributed 700 specially designed walking canes to the Board of Selectmen in 700 towns across Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. Back then, living to be close to 100 years

old was a very newsworthy topic. Mr. Grozier conceived the idea of these canes to attract more readers (the Boston Post was published from 1909 to 1956 and became one of the most successful newspapers of 19th century Boston). The canes were made by J. F. Fradley and Company, a New York manufacturer, from

The Board of Selectmen were to be the trustees of the cane and make sure it was passed to their oldest male citizen as a sign of respect for use as long as he lived and then handed down to the next oldest citizen of the town. (In 1930, eligibility for the cane was finally opened to women). Berwick, Maine is one of 227 towns in Maine that continue this Yankee tradition, although Berwick’s cane resides in a glass display case at the town hall and current recipients now receive a plaque. Mr. John F. Robinson, who was born in 1833, was the first known recipient of Berwick’s Boston Post cane. Over the years, the cane was passed along to close to 20 Berwick citizens, including Lura Foss, Jennie Cheetham, Gordon

nouncement which will strengthen and expand ConnectME’s efforts to improve broadband access for Maine families, businesses and communities statewide,” said Commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development Heather Johnson. “Identifying gaps in high-speed internet coverage is the first step in ensuring every Mainer can access the tools they need to succeed and this in an important step in making that goal a reality.” “In order to ensure that all Americans have access to broadband, we need a more precise picture of the current services and infrastructure that are available,” said David Redl, Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information and NTIA Administrator. “NTIA’s work on an updated map, in partnership with these initial states, will help policymakers around the country make better

decisions as they devise broadband expansion plans.” In addition to Maine, California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, and West Virginia will contribute data and inputs to improve the map. According to NTIA, the states were chosen because they “reflect geographic diversity, participate in NTIA’s State Broadband Leaders Network, have active broadband plans or programs, and were willing to contribute data that can be combined with nation-

wide sources to give policymakers a deeper understanding of broadband availability.” NTIA intends to seek participation from additional states. The initial map will include available nationwide data for every state in addition to the state-level data

Captain Joel Barnes, 32, was a paramedic and served as the Berwick Fire & Rescue training officer and emergency medical services coordinator. He died fighting a large apartment fire on Bell Street last Friday. The fire remains under investigation but initial findings indicate that Cap-

~ News ~ Land & Water Conservation Fund Signed Into Law WASHINGTON, D.C. The U.S. House of Representatives approved a permanent reauthorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) as part of a public lands legislative package by a vote of 363-62. The legislation previously passed the Senate by a vote of 92-8 and now heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME) have long championed LWCF. Last month, they joined a bipartisan group in reintroducing legislation to permanently reauthorize the program. “LWCF is our country’s most important and successful conservation and outdoor recreation program,” said Senator Collins. “The broad, bipartisan support LWCF received reflects the outdoor recreation opportunities this program has created in every county across the country. Permanent reauthorization of LWCF will strengthen local conservation and recreation efforts in Maine, helping to ensure both current and future generations can enjoy the beauty of its natural resources.” “Over the last 50 years, the Land and Water Conservation Fund has preserved public lands, supported outdoor recreation programs, and helped people across the country connect with the America’s natu-

ral beauty,” said Senator King. “The LWCF isn?t a partisan or political issue, and it should not be regularly held in limbo due to unrelated debates. By permanently reauthorizing the LWCF, we will be able to guarantee that this program will continue to serve the American public and protect our public lands for generations to come.” The LWCF was estab-

lished by Congress in 1965 to ensure access to outdoor spaces for present and future generations, and to provide money to federal agencies and state and local governments to purchase land, water, and wetlands for the benefit of all Americans. The LWCF has supported more than 42,000 state and local projects in communities across the country.

multiple roles. “This will create a wonderful experience for actors, Guptill said. For “Curious Incident, Hackmatack will be looking to cast 10 versatile actors who move well, can handle English dialects, and play imaginatively together as an ensemble, according to Artistic Director Crystal Lisbon. “These roles are just superb, with plenty of ways to make and build characters, Guptill said. The lead in this play is Christopher Boone, who is in his late teens or early 20s and has a unique perception of the world. Lisbon describes Christopher as being brilliant at math and someone who “feels deeply, but struggles with understanding social and emotional cues, and empathizing with others. Fear and frustration can cause him to become overwhelmed, agitated, and sometimes violent so the actor must be be physically fit and agile, she said. For “Peter and the Starcatcher Hackmatack will be looking for a dozen or so actors to play a number of roles. Though the show

is not a musical, there are musical interludes, and actors will need to be comfortable with music. “If we can find actors with some experience as musicians as well, that would be ideal said Lisbon, who is also directing the show. As far as the two musicals of the season – “Always, Patsy and “Mamma Mia, each calls for very different abilities. Guptill expects a large turnout of performers auditioning for the role of country singer Patsy Cline because “it is such a great way to show off musical skills. Any actors who are interested in this part will need to forward their headshot and resume when they request an audition. Patsy Cline, a female who is 25 to 35, is known for her rich tone, emotionally expressive and bold contralto voice. The only other actor in this show is Patsy’s wisecracking friend, Louise Seger, a female 35 to 55 years old. The actor playing Seger must be musical, but not necessarily a great singer, said Lisbon, “She must command the stage, because she essentially narrates the entire show. And “Mamma Mia, a hit

Broadway comedy based on the music of ABBA, has many roles suitable for older men and older women. The lead is a 20-something female, and the ensemble

Dear Computer Lady, I have an issue and could use some assistance. I keep getting message and shutting down “proxy server connection failed” and to the best of my knowledge have no relationship with a proxy server. Information I have researched indicates proxy servers are used primarily by organizations and companies. Arlys Dear Arlys, It sounds like you have some malware infecting your system. Many malware infections set a proxy on the machines they infect so that all of the computers internet traffic is funneled through a specified server. Sometimes they do this so that they can get paid for bombarding you with ads, or they might try selling you a program that will “fix” the problem. Your local computer repair shop should be able to remove the malware and turn off the proxy settings for you. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been using Carbonite for the past few months but I had a problem that I thought Carbonite would have saved me from but it did not. I had a virus (or something) that caused a number of my files to get corrupted. So, I went to Carbonite to recover my files but found that the corrupted files had been backed up over my good files. Based on what I could find, many of these backup services only save one copy of your files. So, when corruption occurs, they are of no benefit. Do you know of any backup services that do periodic backups and keep any prior backups? I have begun

~ Computer Lady & Library News ~ doing backups on my external hard drive more often as a result of the problem I ran into. I would like something automated if possible. Thanks for your help and advice, Debbie Dear Debbie, When you need to recover an earlier version of a file that has been backed up with Carbonite, you can do so with the following directions. 1. Locate the file you want to restore on your computer. 2. Right-click on the file. 3. In the context menu, point to, “Carbonite” then click on, “Restore previous versions...” 4. A window with available previous versions will appear. Click on the version you want to restore, and click, “OK” to restore the file. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have an aol email address. How do I stop all the spam that I get every day? Some days I have over 500 spam. Should I change my email address our what should I do? Thank you, Irv Dear Irv, If you are willing to change your email address, I would get a new one with Gmail. I believe they have the best spam filter available. An email address with Gmail is free, includes a large amount of storage space (mine is currently 15GB of which I am only using 11%) you can access it from any computer or device with an internet connection, and as I already said, it has an excellent filter. You can sign up for Gmail at https://mail.google. com. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,

I was typing in Word Pad and my tool bar disappeared. Can you please tell me how to get it back Thank you so much, Barb Dear Barb, Your toolbar will be simple to get back once you know how it disappeared. This is my best guess how that happened. In WordPad (Which is included in every version of Windows) there is a small arrow in the upper-right hand corner (just below the X that you use to close the window) If you click on this arrow, it either expands or minimizes the ribbon (what you referred to as a toolbar). If your toolbar is not displayed, click on this arrow to display it. If you want to hide the toolbar, click again. I’m guessing that you accidentally clicked on this arrow when your toolbar disappeared. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. The informational gatherings provide an opportunity for community members to learn about elder law and the many ways elder law attorneys can help, in a casual setting. Firm attorneys (pictured to the right) will answer general questions such as: what is elder law; MaineCare eligibility requirements; why one might want to avoid probate; and why downloading estate planning documents from the internet could do more harm than good. Community Conversations will be held the second Wednesday of each month from noon to 12:45 p.m. Registration is required either online at www.mainecenterforelderlaw.com or by calling the office at 207-467-3301. The first Community Conversation is March 13, and will be led by firm founder and partner Martin C. Health & Fitness ...RADON from page 17 something valued by homeowners since the dawn of time: safety. Security systems can safeguard homeowners and their families from criminals, but homeowners also must ensure steps are taken to protect a home’s inhabitants from naturally occurring threats, including radon. Radon is a radioactive gas that is produced from the natural breakdown of the uranium found in most rocks and soil. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, exposure to radon gas is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Because it’s naturally occurring, radon can infiltrate any home. However, the EPA, working alongside state and federal geologists, has developed maps that predict the potential indoor radon levels for every county in the country.

(Note: Radon can pose a health risk when breathed in through outdoor air, but such instances are unusual because radon is typically diluted in open air.) Each county has been assigned a zone depending on its potential radon threat, and those that pose the biggest threat are designated as Zone 1, while those with the lowest threat are Zone 3. Homeowners building their homes can contact their state’s radon office via www.epa.gov to determine which zone their property is in. In addition to learning which radon zone they’re in, homeowners building new homes can ask their builders to take the following measures so their homes’ interiors are as resistant to radon as possible: Install a layer of clean gravel or aggregate beneath the slab or flooring system. Lay polyethylene sheeting on top of the gravel layer.

~ Where To Dine ~ 5-Bubble Review! from TripAdvisor

5 STARS! This was our first visit to Bintliff’s after many annual trips to

Ogunquit. We started with the mussels, which were AMAZING! They were cooked to perfection and the broth was out of this world, especially with the homemade bread! I had the special which was swordfish with a pineapple salsa and my husband had the beef wellington. Both dishes were incredible and the flavors were well balanced. You could cut the beef with a butter knife! To end our dinner, we had the cheesecake, which was just as amazing as everything else. We met the Chef who was super friendly and accommodating, and made perfect recommendations. We will definitely make Bintliff’s a part of our annual dinner routine!

~ News ~ Dig Safe Emphasized in Safety Training SOUTH BERWICK Sam Murray from Unitil recently visited the South Berwick fire station to provide training on natural gas safety and emergency response. State law requires homeowners and professionals to call Dig Safe at 811 for even small projects, like installing a mailbox or planting shrubs, to make

sure the area is clear of important utilities. The depth of utility lines vary, and there may be multiple utility lines in a common area. Dig Safe is a not-for-profit clearinghouse that notifies participating utility companies of your plans to dig. In turn, these utilities (or their contract locating companies) respond to mark

out the location of their underground facilities. Dig Safe is a free service, funded entirely by its member utility companies. The organization offers educational seminars throughout New England. The event to be held March 28 at Village by the Sea in Wells is sold out, however readers can visit www.digsafe. com for additional possibilites.

Most of Glen’s career was spent at Hussey Seating, very close to his home in North Berwick. After 35 years he joined Noble High School until retirement. Glen was a former member of the North Berwick fire department. He was a family man who enjoyed spending time over holidays, various parties or simply just to get together with what he preferred to call his “blended family. Glen enjoyed hunting and fishing trips with his friends and family as well as clam digging when the tide was just right. Fun Thrives at Charlie Brown Basketball Tournament

YORK This year’s slate of teams competing in the 29th Annual Charlie Brown Basketball Memorial Classic in York delivered on its promise of providing round after round of exciting basketball action. In total, 63 teams competed in 114 games in a double-elimination format that took place at both York High School and York Middle School. When all was said and done, the results were as follows: York won both the thirdand fourth-grade and the fifthand sixth-grade boys divisions, Marshwood won the third- and fourth-grade girls and the seventh- and eighth-grade boys divisions, Wells won the fifth- and sixth-grade girls division, and

the Kennebec Valley Boys and Girls Club won the seventh- and eighth-grade girls division. This popular tournament was the brainchild of York Police Officer, Charlie Brown, who was well ahead of his time in his philosophy of Community Policing. Charlie believed that a tournament could be a great outlet for kids; providing an opportunity to participate in a safe, competitive atmosphere where the emphasis would be on healthy choices, sportsmanship and fun. He also believed that any funds generated from the tournament should be put back into the community through youth-based initiatives that promoted and encouraged those very same things throughout the year. YORK York Parks & Recreation is offering co-ed indoor flag football at the York Sports Center, 1050 Route 1, York. Flag football is a version of American football that is popular across the U.S. The rules of the game are similar to those of the professional game, but instead of tackling players to the ground, the defensive team must remove a flag from the ball carrier who is wearing a flag belt in order to end a down. This is a non-contact league in an effort to minimize injuries. This program wishes to emphasize fun, friendly competition, and practice of the “skill portion of the game. Games will be held Thursdays March 14 through April 18, with kids ages 6-9 playing from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and ages 10-12
