Brian Hall

Refuses to Slow Down for Parkinson’s By Jeanne Couturier, Staff Writer SEACOAST Brian Hall is a remarkable man who has lived and suffered with Parkinson’s Disease since he was 14 years old. Now 58, Brian shares the story of his personal journey in his book “Not Afraid to Fall” and also speaks in front of groups to empower others and offer messages of hope to other Parkinson’s sufferers. At a recent event (shown on left), Brian introduced himself and said, “It’s a physical battle isn’t it?” and continued by saying, “Physically I do the best I can,

but psychologically from time to time I need to give myself a pass because it’s bad enough I’m sick, why would I want to feel bad about feeling bad? If I fall I just get back up and keep going, and that attitude has been very helpful for me.” Brian’s road has been a long one. At 16, he saw a neurologist who told Brian his problem was psychosomatic (all in his head!). “What does a kid do with that? I didn’t know what was going on, so the worse I got, the more inward I got. I started to hide my feelings but that was as crippling

as the disease itself.” Another neurologist called it dopa responsive dystonia which is a disorder that involves involuntary tremors, muscle contractions and other uncontrollable movements. He was given drugs and some worked for a while but then didn’t. So basically from age 14 to 28 he was getting worse and worse and not knowing why. “I knew I was drugged up but what choice did I have?” Sometimes he felt like the drugs were actually making him worse See HALL page 14...

works its way through to the big pan of the evaporator, where the level of it needs to be strictly con-

trolled. “Too low and it burns the pan and ruins it. Too high and the sap won’t boil,” said Rick. So the evaporator needs to be tended at all times, usually through 12 hours of boiling per day. And the wood stove that sits below the evaporator needs tending too. He explained, “Takes a lot of wood. Got to keep the stove as hot as we can – faster cooking.” As the sap cooks the syrup gets heavy, sinks to the bottom of the pan, and flows over to a tap on the side. Here it will be released and bottled by hand. It takes 40 See MAPLE page 2...

Here in York County, the sweet aroma of sap turning to syrup fills the sugar shack at Chase Farms, 1488 North Berwick Road, Wells. Rick and Bellinda Chase and their righthand-man, McCormick Adams, collect sap in the morning, using work horses pulling a sleigh (pictured), from the 700 or so buckets that hang on sugar maples around the 300-acre farm. In the sugar shack, raw sap flows from

The kickoff event is set for Thursday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Kittery Community Center’s Star Theatre. The Kittery School Committee last adopted a vision document eight years ago. As The Vision For the Future was executed, many of its tenets were applied to both Shapleigh School and Mitchell Primary School.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ KAA All Member Show KITTERY The vibrant new Kittery Art Association all-member show, “Splash of Color”, opened on Thursday, March 12, and runs through April 12 with an opening reception on Saturday, March 14, 4-6 p.m. The Spotlight Wall artist for this exhibit is KAA member Jeanne Havran, whose seascapes,

florals, and street scenes are characteristically filled with a dynamic mix of color, light, and movement using a self-described “airy and loose” painting style. As a teenager, Havran had an interest in becoming an artist but was discouraged by her high school guidance counselor because of her color-blindness. Years later, Jeanne took an adult

education art class and was enthusiastically encouraged by the instructor to continue painting and taking art lessons. Her many paintings of

YORK YORKWISE is hosting their 25th annual auction on Saturday, March 21 at York High School. Doors and silent auction open at 5:30 p.m. and the live auction starts at 7 p.m. Funds raised at this event support York’s Project Graduation, and drug/alcohol prevention and education for local youth and families. “We have been overwhelmed by the support from the town departments and organizations,” said YORKWISE President, Britta Ayer. “They have donated some amazing and unique items!” Ayer went on to describe the Mt. A overnight camping adventure that the Parks & Rec. Department provided, Chases Pond Boat Tour from the York Water District, beach parking passes from town hall, birthday party at the York Fire Depart-

ment, catered dinner 10 people donated by First Hill, and even old parking meters from town! Vicki Carr, YORKWISE Auction Chair added, “We also have generous York High alumni who speak fondly their Project Graduation memories and have donated items like Patriots and Red Sox tickets.” Hundreds of auction booklets were dispersed around town and most are now gone. Anyone interested in seeing the booklet can preview many of the items at www.f lipsnack.com/8DB 6797F8D6/yorkwise-auctionbook-2020.html.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Hackmatack to Hold Auditions for Summer Shows BERWICK Auditions for “The Foreigner,” “Legally Blonde,” and “The Spitfire Grill” will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at the South Berwick Community Center at 71 Norton St. “I think 2020 offers roles that will challenge and thrill actors, singers and dancers looking for a place to take the stage this summer,” said Michael Guptill, owner of the 48-year-old Hackmatack Playhouse. Auditions are generally open to actors age 18 and up, but directors may consider younger actors, Guptill said. All actors should prepare a brief audition package of three minutes or less, including a one-minute contemporary comic monologue and two contrasting song cuts of 16 bars each, according to Artistic Director Danielle Howard. At the audition table this

year will be Artistic Director Danielle Howard, Alden Caple, the director and choreographer of “Legally Blonde,” and John Berst, the director of “The Foreigner” and musical director. The three shows run July 8 through Labor Day and each show rehearses the three weeks before it opens. For the first show, “The Foreigner,” Hackmatack is looking for two women and five men. This two-act comedy tells the story of a shy Englishman on vacation at a fishing lodge in rural Georgia. After pretending not to speak English, he becomes privy to dangerous and frivolous secrets. Characters include a science-fiction copy editor, an inherently shy man with an unfaithful wife; a British military demolitions expert; an elderly widow who is a

good-hearted, generous, “downhome” Southerner; a promising young religious leader; a genteel young woman going through an emotional time; an agreeable young man who is a bit slower than those around him; and a local property inspector who is superstitious and mysterious. “Legally Blonde,” the second show, is a popular Broadway musical that is “the big show” of the summer. It follows the transformation of Elle Woods, a law student, as she tackles stereotypes and scandals in pursuit of her dreams. The show calls for several people to play law students, as well an ensemble of singers and dancers. “The Spitfire Grill,” a smallstage musical that will close the season, has a cast of four women and three men. It tells the story of an elderly woman who owns

tion the cast calls for a soft spoke 30-something woman and her slightly older husband; an out-ofwork foreman of a stone quarry; a young small-town policeman; a nosy postmistress, and a mysterious visitor who never speaks, but has a powerful and expressive intensity. established in the 1980s as a drug- and alcohol-free night of celebration for graduating seniors, in an effort to see them celebrate safely on this special night. Following its implementation more than 30 years ago, Maine saw an almost immediate, consistent decline in alcohol-related teen highway deaths, and by 1990, there were no youth fatalities attributed to drinking, drugging, and driving in Maine during the May 15 through June 20 commencement season. Recognition of Project Graduation’s impact has continued. Tickets cost $15 per person in advance, $20 at the door, and are available at https://ericdittelmanatnoble.bpt.me. The show runs through March 22, and features artwork from every KHS visual arts student in grades 9 through 12. The show provides a scope of visual artworks across a broad range of media and subject matter, highlighting some of the most dynamic examples of visual art currently happening in our community at the high school level. During the show’s run, all RSU21 students will be admitted to the Museum for free. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I was typing in Word Pad and my tool bar disappeared. Can you please tell me how to get it back? Thank you so much, Barb Dear Barb, Your toolbar will be simple to get back once you know how it disappeared. This is my best guess how that happened. In WordPad (Which is included in every version of Windows) there is a small arrow in the upper-right hand corner (just below the X that you use to close the window) If you click on this arrow, it either expands or minimizes the ribbon (what you referred to as a toolbar). If your toolbar is not displayed, click on this arrow to display it. If you want to hide the toolbar, click again. I’m guessing that you accidentally clicked on this arrow when your toolbar disappeared. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Sometimes when working on the computer I have the need to copy and paste several items several different times. With all the technology in our computers I would think someone has come up with a way to save several copies (example: Copy 1, Copy 2, Copy 3 etc.) and be able to paste them over and over whichever is needed. Is there a way to do this? Thanks, Eddie

Dear Eddie, You have just described one of my favorite software programs, ClipMate by Thornsoft Development, Inc. When I upgrade to a new computer, this is one of the very first programs that I install, and I use it almost every day. (occasionally I don’t use my computer for a day, that is probably the only time I don’t use ClipMate) Not only does Clipmate remember everything I copy, it also allows me to save collections of clips that I use over and over again (a huge help when working with code) Another great feature is that I can copy a large chunk of data, then paste it in small chunks. This is also helpful when working with code like HTML. When writing this article, I use clipmate when I copy your question, then I copy the question with the answer, use ClipMate to insert line breaks, I often use it to spell check my article, and to automatically remove characters. This job would easily take twice as long without ClipMate. So, head on over to www. thornsoft.com and download a trial copy of ClipMate. You will be glad you did. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a new-ish laptop. I always use a mouse because I can’t cope with the silly little track pad thing they have on laptops. How

can I turn off the trackpad, or maybe there’s another way to solve my problem. When I’m writing something, often the cursor jumps up to a previous line. Sometimes it highlights everything on its way, and sometimes it doesn’t but whichever it does, suddenly I’m typing in the wrong place. This is most frustrating. If it highlights everything, then the next keystroke I make deletes everything in the highlight, which is fine if I were doing it on purpose, but since I’m not, it’s quite infuriating. How can I get this computer to stop doing that? I’m thinking that disconnecting the trackpad might work, but I’m not aware of touching the trackpad when this happens. I may be touching it by accident along the way. Has anyone else complained about this? I know one other person who says she has this problem too, so at least I know it’s not just me. Any ideas how to stop the cursor from jumping up like that? Please and thank you, Betina Dear Betina, This is actually one of the most common questions I receive, and as such it is worth addressing once again. If you search my website, you will find similar questions and answers. Some trackpads can be easily disabled by a switch on or near the trackpad itself. Others can be disabled by a keyboard com-

bination, and still others can be disabled using the settings in the control panel. Sometimes there is a setting in the control panel that turns off the trackpad as soon as you plug in an external mouse. Unfortunately, the switches or settings are unique to each manufacturer and even model of laptop so there is not a universal answer to this question. Look closely at your trackpad, if there is a small button or switch close to it, try pressing it and see if it turns the trackpad off. If you see a light on or near the trackpad, try double tapping directly on the light, often the light will change color and the trackpad will turn off. Double tapping again will turn it back on. If you can’t find any switches, try going to the Control Panel, under “Hardware and Sound” then click on “trackpad” and see what you can find for settings. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, The other day I accidentally blocked a person who had an email in my outbox. Afterwards, I tried looking at ways to retrieve him, but was unable. Can you help? Thanks, Mike Dear Mike, Although you didn’t say what email program you were using, your message came from a hotmail account, so I am going to guess that you are using the online

hotmail (now called Outlook since Microsoft bought hotmail) interface. Here is how you take an address out of your blocked senders list in Hotmail (outlook) 1. Log into your hotmail account. 2. In the upper-right corner of the window, next to your name is a small gear icon. Click on the gear. 3. In the drop down list, click on “Options”. 4. In the list of options, click on “Safe and blocked senders”. 5. Click on “Blocked senders”. 6. In the list of blocked senders on the right, click on the address you accidentally blocked, then click the “Remove from list” button. 7. Click on the “Outlook. com” button in the upper-left to go back to your email messages. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. In December, U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME) led a bipartisan letter that was signed by 14 Senators to Acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf, urging him to release these visas to allow Maine small businesses to hire additional temporary employees and help support their oper-

In January, Senator King and Representative Chellie Pingree led a letter that was signed by 189 Members of Congress, including Senator Collins and Representative Jared Golden, urging Acting Secretary Wolf to immediately increase the statutory cap of H-2B visas. “Nearly 37 million people visit Maine each year, supporting the jobs of more than 100,000 Mainers. ...HALL from page 1 because he’d be on the floor writhing and crying in pain, had awful headaches. He added, “If we’re counting on drugs to solve all our problems, that’s not going to cut it.” Brian’s condition wasn’t officially diagnosed as Parkinson’s until he was 28 years old. At that point he was given a drug called Sinemet which is prescribed for Parkinson’s or Parkinson-like symptoms and it helped him so much he was able

to ski Mont Blanc in France with friends. Brian also shared that his brother, who also has PD, decided to get the same operation as actor Michael J. Fox called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS). It’s a brain surgery where an implant sends electrical signals to areas responsible for body movement. Electrodes are placed deep in the brain and are connected to a stimulator device similar to a heart pacemaker.

Although DBS helped Brian’s brother, Brian was apprehensive about having it done.“I knew I’d have holes drilled in my head so I wasn’t ready to jump in too quickly.” But the prospect of a life filled with more pain or not being able to move at all, helped him decide to go ahead. So in 2007 he had bilateral DBS which means both sides of his brain and Brian now says it was the best thing he could have done. After the surgery, Brian was determined to take over his own life and started eating healthier, getting more sleep and getting more exercise. He has been off medications for 12 years and works out five days a week - even riding his bicycle on the Mount Washington auto road for two years in a row! “I’m not just exercising to gain anything, I just want to keep what I have.” The battle is not just physical, it’s up here” as he points to his head and smiles. “It starts in our head, if we shut down opportunities to make changes and grow and develop we short change our lives.” At the event Brian connected with every attendee, moving

Run For Fox Sake 5K Benefits Parkinson’s Disease Research BERWICK –

On Saturday, April 18, downtown Berwick will be the scene of “Run For Fox Sake”, a 5K walk/run hosted by local Michael J. Fox Foundation (MJFF) fundraisers. In addition, Corner Point Brewing Company will support the cause with their “For Fox Sake Blackberry Wheat Beer Release”. The Michael J. Fox Foundation (www.michaeljfox.org) is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease through an aggressively-funded research agenda and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson’s some to tears by the inspiration they found in his story. “We attach our self worth to what we do, like what we did for a living or even what we wear, so because you’re hampered now, doesn’t mean you’re useless, this is not your fault, that’s why I tell people “give yourself a pass!” A woman with PD asked Brian about using a stationary bike. Brian emphatically said,“yes, in fact that was a gateway to going up Mt Washington, I had a stationary bike at home and one day I realized if I can pedal here why can’t I pedal on the road with my friends? It opened up a whole new world for me.” Brian encouraged a man who missed being able to ski by telling him that he has a friend who teaches how to sit while skiing, “I’ll give you his name if you want to try it out.” Brian told him. Another man said he used to like to take walks in the woods but now he’s afraid he’ll trip and fall. Brian said, “we need to focus on what’s in front of us, not what we lost, that’s the only way to do

today. This chip-timed race will start at 8:30 a.m. in Sullivan Square with the beer release following immediately after at 9:30 a.m. Registrations prior to March 15 will receive an event t-shirt (while supplies last). Local business sponsors are being added weekly to help cover event costs so all proceeds from the race registrations and $1 of every Blackberry Wheat Beer will be donated directly to MJFF. Details can be found at https://runsignup.com/ ForFoxSake5K or on their Facebook event page. it and if you can’t do the things you used to do, find something new and different. Parkinson’s can erase your passion, DON’T LET IT!” Brian wanted everyone know what empowerment meant to his life. “If this crippled guy (meaning himself) can ride a bike up Mt. Washington, there’s opportunity for all of us. Advocate for yourself, find your own path to feeling better.” By the end of the event people were obviously moved by Brian’s honest, thoughtful and positive message. One woman said, “we really appreciate you being here Brian! You give us hope, you really do, you’re phenomenal!” Brian sold several copies of book and signed each one. Not Afraid to Fall is available for purchase on Brian’s website: www.notafraidtofall.com. It’s a powerful and helpful book not only for people with Parkinson’s but anyone who needs inspiration to take control and overcome difficult situations in their life.

Blue light is a type of visible light that is emitted from the devices you use every day, including your smartphone, tablet, and computer. Because this is a short wavelength of light that produces a high amount of energy, our bodies tend to associate blue light with daytime. Students Raise Thousands for Heart Health WELLS Under the direction of Physical Education teacher Kathy Calo, over 300 Wells Elementary School students took part in a large jump rope event in the school’s gymnasium in February. This was part of WES’s annual participation in the Kids Heart Challenge to raise funds for the work of the American Heart Association (AHA). In doing so, students raised $15,300 with pledges for their participation. Previously known as “Jump Rope for Heart” and introduced in 1987 to the school by Calo, WES students have thus far raised a grand total of $256,528 for this cause. According to the main

People and Business Profiles Chef Expands Palate on Trip to Thailand and Cambodia WELLS Chas Beymer, chef/part owner Joshua’s Restaurant and Bar on Route One in Wells, spent two weeks in January traveling through Thailand and Cambodia sampling local cuisine. “I have always been interested in Southeast Asian culture and the ingredients and techniques they use in their boldly flavored cuisine and saw the month the restaurant closed as a perfect opportunity to immerse myself in the local food culture.” Beymer credits his parents with introducing him to boldly flavored home cooked meals, and instilling in him a passion for food leading him to restaurant kitchens where he worked his way up from washing dishes to sous chef. After graduating from Bellingham Technical College for culinary arts he took a job at a Spanish Tapas restaurant on St. John, one of US Virgin Islands, which is where Joshua Mather, owner of Joshua’s, found him. “While on vacation on the island of St. John an enjoyable meal prompted me to ask the chef if I could come by the next day and hang out in his kitchen. Coming back the next day the only one working was Chas. I in-

troduced myself and helped him prep for the service that night. I admired his kitchen skills and the control he had over the stoves. We met up later that night and talked about the restaurant business and cooking. This was the start of a friendship that grew through emails and phone calls. Beymer came to work at Joshua’s the following summer and the next spring he started working year round. A couple of years later the owner of a restaurant in St John offered Beymer the job of executive chef. He hesitated but Josh assured him he was ready. They kept in touch and a year later Mather offered Beymer a partnership. In addition to Thailand

and Cambodia, Beymer has visited Vietnam, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru and Chile. Mather assures that “the basic menu at Joshua’s will not change, or I should say, there may be some subtle changes as there have been over the years. Our cuisine will continue to be Regional American but American food has always been influenced by food from other parts of the world.” Joshua’s Restaurant and Bar opened in 2004 serving dinners which include organic vegetables raised on their own farm. Agents Earn Quality Service Award SOUTH BERWICk Century 21 Real Estate LLC recently recognized the following sales affiliates with the Century 21 Quality Service Pinnacle Producer Award. The annual award is based on results from the Century 21 Quality Service Survey which is emailed to consumers immediately after the purchase or sale of a home.

To earn the award, an agent must receive completed customer surveys for at least 50% of their transactions surveyed from January 1 to December 31, with an average survey score of at least 95% or better for two consecutive years. This year’s winners include Anne Whitney-Gray and Jerry Tatlock of Century 21 Barbara Patterson in South Berwick, who

WELLS Jessica Keyes will retire from her elected position of Town Clerk in June of 2020. She has served the Town of Wells for over forty-two years. Keyes began her career with town government as a volunteer in the town clerk’s office and within a few years became part-time deputy clerk and in 1986 became a full-time deputy clerk. Her first election as town clerk was in 1999 until present. She took the place of her mother, Marion Noble, who was elected as Town Clerk in 1978 until 1999. Noble was her mentor and boss, and taught her to pay attention to detail and to always be honest. Her constant saying was,

“Always have your customer leave with a smile.” Keyes sought to make this happen as often as possible. Keyes is very thankful for the supportive and dedicated office staff over the years. She appreciates the support of the citizens of Wells who elected her to the position for seven three-year terms of office. Many changes occurred over those forty-two years. Retirement will bring her time to spend with family – in particular, her mother and grandchildren. Keyes hopes to have a bigger garden and more time on snowmobile trails throughout the state. Biddeford Savings Become Division of Maine Community Bank YORK COUNTY On January 1, 2020, Biddeford Savings and Mechanics Savings Bank merged under a single banking charter becoming Maine Community Bank. Biddeford Savings and Mechanics Savings will retain their names as divisions of the new Maine Community Bank. The merger of these two community banks creates an almost $1 billion bank, providing strength for future growth, while retaining their established bank identities and ties to their communities. The creation of Maine Community Bank combines the strengths and rich histories of two banks that share the same mission and core values. “Bringing these two great banks together under one banking charter is the next logical step for the relationship between Biddeford Savings and Mechanics Savings,” said Jeanne Hulit, President and CEO of Maine Community Bank. “Both banks are already

vibrant and strong. Officially unifying these two longstanding community banks enables us to grow stronger together for the benefit of our customers, our colleagues and our communities.” This merger gives Biddeford Savings and Mechanics Savings the ability to increase lending capacity and introduce expanded product offerings. All bank branches will remain open and customers will have access to full-service banking at all branch locations from Auburn to Kennebunk later in 2020. Biddeford Savings and Mechanics Savings are updating their visual identities, bringing the look and feel of each division in line with the parent brand, Maine Community Bank. “We’re thrilled to unveil our Maine Community Bank brand family identity,” said Hulit. “Biddeford Savings and Mechanics Savings share the same values and integrity, which our new

Kennebunk’s Hancock Lumber Receives Award KENNEBUNK When the North Berwick American Legion Post 87 needed to replace their deteriorating stairs on the back side of their building, Hancock Lumber of Kennebunk, donated the building materials to build a brand-new set of stairs. To properly thank and recognize this well-known Maine business for their donation, Don Beaupre, American Legion Post Commander and Janet Hooke, American Legion Auxiliary President, presented a Commendation Award to Jim Vitello of Hancock Lumber, Kennebunk. Post Commander Don Beaupre stated that because of the generous donation by Hancock Lumber, the post will have the extra funds to help other veterans and their famiMaine Community Bank logo represents. Charles M. Goller, 98 YORK – Charles M. Goller passed away peacefully on February 23, 2020 in York. Chuck was born on December 11, 1921 to Hattie (Bushold) and Charles J. Goller in Lawrence, MA. After graduating from high school he went to work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PSNY) as a shipbuilder’s apprentice. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943, graduating from Aviation School in Pensecola, FL, in 1945. He was proud to be an accomplished Corsair aviator. After active duty he remained in the Naval Reserves until 1965. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Lawrence, MA.

He attended University of Massachusetts where he met his wife, Janice Luther Goller. He graduated in 1951 with a bachelor degree in business. Chuck then began a 38 year career at PNSY which included a record number of sea trial trips. During that time he and Jan built a home in York Harbor, raised a family of four children, and became an active part of the York community. He was a founding member of the Agamenticus Ski Club which created the Powderhouse Hill ski area in South Berwick. Chuck was also a key principle in the incorporation of The Big A ski resort in York where he served as a volunteer ski patrol. He later built a camp near Sugarloaf Mountain where he enjoyed skiing for over 45 years with his family and friends. Chuck and Jan were active members of the York Golf and Tennis Club where he served as a director and was a member of the Men’s Twilight League for many years. Over the years he owned a number of boats and took great pleasure in fishing and sailing on the ocean with his children and grandchildren.

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists.

4-year battle with ALS with his wife by his side. Bill was born June 22, 1970 in Rochester, NH, the son of William and Patricia (Lizotte) Prentice, Sr. He was a 1988 graduate of Noble High School and in 2002, coached baseball. Bill drove a boom truck delivering drywall for many years before moving on to the City of Rochester, working as a light equipment

operator-Senior Roads Scholar; retiring after ten years. Billy liked spending time in the kitchen cooking and enjoyed drywalling. He had a great love of the outdoors including boating, fly fishing, ice fishing, hunting four-wheeling but most of all, hanging with all of his friends and family. He’ll be remembered for being a jokester and especially a wise ass. Billy was a caring, giving and gentle soul whose life was cut too short from ALS, but he lived his life to its fullest in spite of his diagnosis. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Patricia Prentice and sister, Kelley McAloon. He will be sorely missed by his wife Sheri V. Special St. Patrick’s Celebrations PORTLAND Masses and special events at churches across Maine will highlight the diocese’s celebration of the Feast Day of St. Patrick. The feast day holds special significance in the Diocese of Portland as St. Patrick, along with St. Jean Baptiste, is a secondary patron. In addition, St. Patrick Church in Newcastle was the first church in the country named for St. Patrick. It was dedicated by Fr. Jean-Louis Lefebvre de Cheverus on July 17, 1808, a year before the cornerstone was laid for St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. The original St. Patrick Church has been in continual use longer than any other Catholic church in New England. St. Patrick, who was captured by Irish raiders as a teenager in the fifth century, ultimately escaped his enslavement, entered the Church, and returned to Ireland where he brought the message of the Gospel to the very people who had kept him in slavery. Local gatherings planned

to celebrate the Feast Day of St. Patrick include the annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance on Saturday, March 14 in the hall of St. Mary Church, 236 Eldridge Road in Wells. Corned beef and cabbage, along with ham, will be on the menu with music provided by Tom Pomeroy. The cost is $30 with a social 5:30-6 p.m. To reserve a spot, call 207-646-6870 or 207-850-6488. This year’s benefactor of the St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance is baby Ophelia. She is a six-monthold relative of parishioners who needs a liver transplant. She is under care at Boston Children’s Hospital. Even though the family has insurance, much of the treatment is not fully covered and the constant medical care has caused severe financial hardship for the family. Anyone wishing to make a donation may do so after Mass at the Knights table in the narthex. Checks should be made out to the “Knights of Columbus.” Checks may also be mailed to P.O. Box 3050, Wells, ME 04090.

Emma’s Angels NORTH BERWICK Our sweet dog of the week is Panda! We really love this girl and can’t understand why she hasn’t found her forever home. Panda is a seven-year-old Staffie mix up-to-date on her shots and spayed. She should be the only pet in the home as she is the queen! Panda loves to run and play with toys, so a fenced in yard is a must. Her new pet parent should be home most of the time or work from home. If you would like to meet this gorgeous girl, call Emma’s Angels Rescue 207-676-5599. She is in North Berwick. Needed at this time. Dry dog food. We feed Blue Buf-

falo or 4 Health from Tractor Supply and thank you!
