Chase Farm Gets Sappy for Maine’s Maple Sunday STATEWIDE Commissioner Walt Whitcomb formally announced that Maine has adopted the international grading system for maple syrup. This standard to take effect, comes in advance of this year’s Maine Maple Sunday, held March 25. Most Maine producers have already implemented the voluntary standards in hopes of providing consumers with a better understanding of the natural product they are buying.

Maple Sunday is held annually, every fourth Sunday of the month. Participating sugarhouses will be open for visitors to enjoy freshly made maple syrup and candy, demonstrations of syrup production, sugarbush tours and a variety of other family activities. The voluntary standards announced by Whitcomb are designed to match those used by other countries in order to give consumers standardized information for selecting maple

syrup. It is in response to a 2010 petition from the International Maple Syrup Institute, an organization of producers in the United States and Canada. “The new system, utilized by most Maine producers, combines four to five different systems into one standard that is easier for consumers to follow,” said Whitcomb. “Customers benefit from a system that more accurately portrays what they See MAPLE page 5...

Fullmer has served in a variety of leadership positions, including flying squadron command, Chief of Staff of the Joint Interagency Task Force South, facilitating the interdiction of illicit trafficking and other narco-terrorist threats, and Vice Commander of the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, where she was second in charge of United States Central Command’s largest air wing, responsible for combat operations and installation support for 8,000 U.S. and coalition warfighters. Fullmer is a command pilot with more than 2,500 flight

hours in the B-1 Bomber, including 90 combat missions over Afghanistan and Iraq during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom from October 2001 to May 2014. Her lecture “Beyond the Cockpit” is sure to inspire and educate. The afternoon features Monica Grabin, musician and historian, who specializes in how American history is reflected in song. She plays guitar, banjo and autoharp and various percussion instruments. Her focus in this YCSC program will be on music of the 50s and 60s, and a few from “the greatest decade of American songwriting,” the 40’s.

Sen. King Talks with Local Leaders on Economy WELLS U.S. Senator Angus King joined business leaders and community members to discuss ways to grow the economy in York County. Senator King spoke at the York County Community College “Eggs and Issues” series last week. He discussed his work in Washington to support job growth in Maine and discussed the importance of workforce development and broadband infrastructure for York County and the state. Rotarians to Raise Roof

SO. BERWICK & ELIOT The South Berwick Eliot Rotarians plan to raise a roof in the mountains of Honduras, and they invite members of the community to join them. The 10th annual South Berwick-Eliot Rotary Community Geography Quiz Friday, March 23, at the Great Works School in South Berwick will raise the money to put a roof on a new building for a nutritional center and day care center started 10 years ago by a North Berwick elementary school teacher. Sharon Beckwith of North Bewick built a small daycare center in Concepcion del Norte after visiting the mountains of

Honduras and hearing about a woman who starved to death so she would have enough food to feed her own four children. More than a dozen teams will compete in the annual quiz, including teachers, parents, business leaders, and students from all five schools in the Marshwood District. The quiz each year draws hundreds of people to watch game-show-style fun. Audience members are invited to compete for an audience participation prize. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for silent auction, raffle and food and the quiz will begin at 6 p.m. with a presentation by Beckwith about the project. The geography quiz has

raised money in the past for the Eben Ezer School in Milot, Haiti, to send portable kitchens down to an impoverished town in northern Colombia and to help free enslaved women and girls in Nepal. Last year it raised funds for Safe Passage in Guatemala. A former nurse, Beckworth’s efforts to provide clean water, education and medical care evolved into an organization called Daisy’s Children that now feeds 132 children two meals a day and has fed more than 400,000 meals in the 10 years since her first trip. “I dream that the children of these communities receive the same opportunity as my or your child, nephew or niece,� said Beckwith. “Where in the World is Concepcion del Norte,� is free and open to the public. They hoped to introduce their daughters to the idea that many people in the world do not live with blessings and comfort they had. “The money raised by this quiz will not only help the children in Honduras, but will continue to build connections between communities with very different experiences and challenges,� said Mike. “Sharon has worked for years to bring a better life to the children of Conception del Norte and we are glad to be able to help her.� The quiz features teams of two students and two adults, including teachers, parents and community members representing just about every Marshwood

school. Each team is sponsored for $250, mostly by donations from South Berwick Eliot Rotary members and a few other businesses. Raffle and silent auction items are donated by local businesses. There will be home baked goods, with Robin Wheeler of Eliot leading the effort. The Marshwood Interact Club will sell pizza and water. Retailers can also more easily choose the grades they want to stock based on customer preferences.” Maine Maple Statistics: 545,000 gallons were produced last year, worth $17.4 million. Maine’s industry has an annual statewide economic contribution, including multiplier effects, of an estimated $48.7 million in output, 805 full-and part-time jobs, and $25.1 million in labor income. Maine has the third largest syrup industry in this country. Maine has the largest maple producing county in the country—Somerset County. Maine has around 1.4 million taps. On the local front, the steam and sweet aroma of sap turning to syrup fill the sugar shack at Chase Farms in Wells. Rick and Bellinda Chase and their right-hand-man, McCormick Adams, collect sap in the morning, using work horses pulling a sleigh, from the 700 or so buckets that hang on sugar maples around the 300-acre farm. In the sugar shack, raw sap flows from a holding tank through three strainers, which filter out things like bugs or twigs that can get into the sap in the woods. The sap then works its way through to the big pan of the evaporator, where the level of it needs to be strictly controlled. “Too low and it burns the pan and ruins it. Too high and the sap won’t boil,” says Rick. So the evaporator needs to be tended at all times, usually

through 12 hours of boiling per day. And the wood stove that sits below the evaporator needs tending too. Rick explains, “Takes a lot of wood. Got to keep the stove as hot as we can – faster cooking.” “We have a lot of conversations around the evaporator,” says Bellinda. As the sap cooks, the syrup part gets heavy, sinks to the bottom of the pan, and flows over to a tap on the side. Here it will be released and bottled by hand. It takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. Chase’s family has been on the land since the 1720s. The farm currently raises 50 head of cattle, sold as all natural beef, and pigs, for all natural pork. Acres of fields get planted in vegetables and flowers every spring. Some are sold as plants, but many leave the farm as mature flowers for a bouquet, or fullygrown peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, onions, summer squash, basil—many things to make a summer salad or yummy vegetable main dish. Chase Farms will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekend of March 24-25, starting with a pancake breakfast. There will be barn tours, so folks can meet the calves, piglets and lambs. The Blond Belgian horses and the Chestnut Belgians will take turns pulling the wagon out to the sap, so folks can see it up close. And there will be plenty to eat: hot dogs, hamburgers, maple fudge, maple donuts, maple whoopie pies, and vanilla ice cream with maple syrup on the top. Visitors can watch the

Other programs produced by the media team and their classmates include the 2017 WHS graduation, Warrior football games, school wrestling matches, athletic awards, sports promos, new teacher interviews, and even a flu prevention video. Several of their productions can still be viewed on their YouTube space, the WHS Media Team Channel. “Its real world experience. It feels like working a job that I love instead of more like a class,� said team member Nolan Potter who creates video sports promos, graphics and posters.

Last October, Redman led a session about what is involved in creating a high school level media team at the Association of Computer Technology Educators of Maine Technology Conference. Potter also participated in the conference session by providing a student’s perspective on a large screen via Facetime. “I look at this as opportunity to get experience for what I want to do in college,� said senior and sports commentator Dean, who added candidly that his first game commentary was “pretty bad.� However, he indicated that he was determined to improve his on-air performance and so began researching and practicing to get much better at it. “He knows everything (about teams that play Wells and sports in general) and that’s what’s been so much fun about doing the broadcast with him,� said Zach, Dean’s co-host and

the importance of rural broadband for rural education, healthcare, and economic growth. Last Friday was a busy day for the senator. In the morning, Senator King also visited the Sanford Regional Technical Center, the new high school and technology center which will open in September 2018. The facility is designed to serve eight school districts, comprised of 22 school communities, with state of the art programming for workforce development and aims to provide apprenticeship opportunities to high school students in a variety of industries. That afternoon, Senator King presented a Senatorial Certificate to Genest Concrete Manufacturing in Sanford to honor its 90th anniversary in business. He then traveled to Biddeford to present Biddeford Savings Bank with a Congressional Record Statement to honor its 150th anniversary. At the chamber luncheon, Senator King also presented a Congressional Record Statement to the Sanford/Springvale community congratulating the city on its 250th anniversary.

I hope our livestream audience will grow in the same way our Facebook following has.� Redman adds that she hopes to promote the media team as “another amazing vehicle� or platform to share the story not only of Wells High School but, as she puts it, “our amazing community.�

~ News ~ High School Names Top Citizens KENNEBUNK Susan Cressey, principal of Kennebunk High School, has named Hallie Schwartzman and Jack Reetz, seniors at Kennebunk High School, as the Southern Maine Athletic Association Good Citizens for the Class of 2018. They will be honored at a banquet on April 10 along with other recipients from the SMAA conference. Schwartzman is a member of the National Honor Society, Peer Helpers and the Class of 2018 Executive Council. She mentors middle school girls and is an active participant on the Unified basketball team. Schwartzman is a captain of the KHS girls’ soccer and lacrosse teams. She was presented the Dartmouth Book Award as a junior and was one of six athletes in Maine to be named a U.S. Lacrosse Academic All-American in 2017. She is the daughter of Joseph and Edie Schwartzman of Kennebunk. Reetz was a member of his class’ Executive Council for two years. He has played soccer for four years and received all-conference academic honors. A four-season member of the ski team and captain for junior-senior years, Reetz was named most improved player in 2014-2015 and received the coach’s award during his sophomore and junior years for his team spirit and leadership throughout the season. He also plays lacrosse and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is the son of Jack and Paula Reetz of Kennebunk.

YORK COUNTY The American Red Cross of Maine announced that it has been awarded a one-year grant of $5,000 for youth volunteer engagement and a two-year grant totaling $20,000 for Disaster Cycle Services from United Way of York County. The investment will support the recruitment, training, and engagement of youth and young adult volunteers in York County with the aim of increasing their numbers. It will also impact the organization’s ability to respond to the emergency needs of York County residents by enabling it to increase the capacity of disaster volunteers,

youth engagement in programs, and direct financial assistance to disaster clients. The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Girls Raise $ for Corner Cupboard SANFORD Girls Who Grant (GWG) recently set out on their first bus tour of Sanford. Members voted that a portion of the proceeds raised would go to the Corner Cupboard, a non-perishable pantry in Sanford. Tickets were open to the public, $50 each, to take a ride on the Bowl-A-Rama Bus through the city, while Owen Martin drove and spoke about Sanford/Springvale history. Tickets included a beverage and appetizers at three local restaurants: Backstreet Grill, Springvale Public House, and Third Alarm Diner. The tour didn’t stop there, when the bus returned to the Bowl-A-Rama, folks enjoyed a round of drinks, bowling, and a fully catered meal by Above and Beyond Catering. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Oz Brought to Junior High Stage WELLS Wells Junior High School students invite you to their production of “The Wizard of Oz - Young Performers’ Edition” later this month. A combined cast of actors and tech crew represents more than 60 students from grades 5-8. This interpretation of the classic 1899 children’s story became a Broadway play in 1903 and toured for nine months before becoming a major motion picture. Performances will be held Thursday, March 22, and Friday, March 23, at 7 p.m. A Saturday matinee will take place on March 24, at 2 p.m. All shows take place on the WJHS stage, Ward Gymnasium, Route 1, in Wells. The show’s director is Josie Lynn Perkins with Chris Milliken as assistant director. Alison

Graichen is music director. The production team also includes many dedicated community members who assist with choreography, costuming, technical support, and photography. Theatre Camps Open for Enrollment OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Playhouse Children’s Theatre Camps are open for enrollment and filling up fast. Register your aspiring thespian today for either the Rising Stars Camp for children ages 5 to 7, Center Stage Camp for children ages 8 to 10, or the Junior Players Camp for ages 10 to 18. These programs offer theatrical training in a supportive and nurturing environment, and no prior training or skill level is required to participate. Each camp session concludes with a staged production in front of an audience. Rising Stars Theatre Camp introduces the youngest students to the theatre arts through fun and educational games with instruction for children ages 5 to 7. The directors bring performing arts to life for youngsters new to theatre by teaching basic staging, music, and choreography with an emphasis on group performance. Students are encouraged to grow at their own pace with no pres-

Weather Extends Casting Call BERWICK Local actors interested in performing this summer at Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick may have received a stroke of good luck, thanks to Mother Nature. Due to the stormy weather the first weekend in March, the theater had a smaller turnout than usual at its annual Boston auditions and will have more roles to cast in local auditions set for later this month. “The storm kept a lot of people from traveling to auditions last weekend,” said Michael Guptill, owner of the Berwick theater. “The good news is actors from our very own backyard will have all kinds of opportunities to get cast in our four summer productions.”

Auditions will be March 24 and 25 for the two musicals and two plays that will be performed at Hackmatack Playhouse during the 2018 season. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ George Washington and the Natives SOUTH BERWICK On Thursday, March 22, Dartmouth College professor Colin Calloway will discuss George Washington’s relations with Native Americans and how Indian nations and lands shaped the man who shaped the republic. The lecture is hosted by the Old Berwick Historical Society, and begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Berwick Academy Arts Center in South Berwick. Admission is free and open to the public. Donations are gratefully accepted. In his sweeping new biography, “The Indian World of George Washington: the First President, the First Americans, and the Birth of the Nation,� Dr. Calloway uses the prism of George Washington’s life to bring focus to the great Native leaders of his time, and the tribes they represented. In the process, he returns them to their rightful place in the story of America’s founding. “Historians continue to examine the significance of the relations early Americans had with Native Americans,� said Nicole St. Pierre, OBHS vicepresident. “The interactions between early settlers and Native Americans are a featured part of our Forgotten Frontier exhibit at the Counting House Museum. This book continues the story,

and ushers us into the time of the Revolution, and what the relations looked like then.� “The Indian World of George Washington,� spans decades of Native American leaders’ interactions with Washington. It traces his early days as surveyor of Indian lands, to his military career against both the French and the British, to his presidency, when he dealt with Native Americans as a head of state would with a foreign power, using every means of diplomacy and persuasion. the end of his life, Washington knew more than anyone else in America about the frontier and its significance to the future of his country. Calloway was born in England, and received his B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Leeds. He has taught at the College of Ripon and York St. John in England, at Springfield High School in Vermont, and at the University of Wyoming. He has also served as editor/assistant director of the D’Arcy McNickle Center for the History of the American Indian at the Newberry Library in Chicago. He joined the faculty of Dartmouth College in 1995 and served four consecutive threeyear terms as chair of the Native American Studies Program. He is now the John Kimball Jr. 1943 Professor of History and Professor of Native American Studies. STATEWIDE Auto insurance rates vary from person to person, even though it may seem like the offerings are the same. But no two drivers are the same, and certain factors may be affecting drivers’ auto insurance premiums without the motorists even realizing it. Automotive insurance provider State Farm says most insurance companies consider several factors when calculating the cost of car insurance. Recognizing which situations can increase or lower costs can help drivers get the best rates and coverage needed. Although it can be tempting to reduce the price of insurance by choosing lower amounts of coverage, there are other ways to make insurance more affordable. • Move. Insurers typically look at where a person lives when calculating rates. Those people who live in highly populated, urban areas likely will have higher premiums than others who live in more rural towns. That’s because greater population density often translates into more people on the road — and a greater chance for insurance claims due to fender benders or theft. By moving, a person may be able to cut rates. • Gender and age are factors. One can’t step into a time machine, but it’s helpful to know that growing a little older can lower insurance premiums. The financial advice source Money Crashers say that young men usually incur higher rates than young women because statistically men get into more accidents. However, as a person moves into his or her senior years, the roles reverse. Older women may see higher rates than men the same age. • Keep make and model in mind. Insure.com says married couples have been found to be less of a risk to insurance providers statistically than those who are single. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that single drivers were twice as likely to be in an auto accident as married drivers. Combining policies also can help married people save.

• Follow the rules of the road. Drivers who have moving violations, drink and drive or engage in otherwise risky behavior behind the wheel may see their rates soar. Insurance companies

Health & Fitness Opioid Crisis Enlists Grandparents STATEWIDE Every child deserves a safe and loving home, a family to provide support, stability, and hugs. When birth parents are unable to care for their children, grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts and uncles, and other family members often step forward. Their answer to this unanticipated challenge is unconditional love. This challenge has become a crisis due to the epidemic of opioid abuse that is ravaging the country. There were more than 64,000 deaths from drug overdose nationwide in 2016 – numbers that exceed the lives lost to car accidents, breast cancer, or a host of other causes. The statistics are shocking and heartbreaking. Last year, in addition to a recordhigh 418 overdose deaths in Maine, nearly 1,000 babies in our State – about eight percent of all births – were born to women addicted to opioids and other drugs. In the United States, a baby is born with an opioid addiction every 25 minutes, more than two per hour. In this crisis, as in past crises, grandparents are coming to the rescue. Grandparents raising grandkids together with the child’s parents can support healthy aging and be a positive experience for all involved. Across the country, however, some 2.6 million children are being raised solely by grandparents. These “custodial grandparents� are called upon for a number of reasons, including alcohol and drug addiction, physical abuse, incarceration, divorce, financial difficulties, military deployment, and even death. In Maine, the number of children being raised solely by their grandparents increased by 24 percent between 2010 and 2015.

Last year, as Chairman of the Senate Aging Committee, I chaired a hearing on the growing phenomenon of grandparents raising grandchildren. The purpose of our hearing was to recognize these “grandfamilies,� and to explore what can be done to assist them as they take on this unanticipated challenge motivated by their love of their grandchildren. A clear message from that hearing was the need for these kinship parents to have greater access to information about the resources available to assist them. As a result, I introduced the Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Act, bipartisan legislation that would create a federal task force charged with developing and disseminating information designed to help kinship parents. This legislation would assist families with navigating the school system, planning for their families’ future, addressing mental health issues for themselves and the children, and building social and support networks. This vital legislation achieved a major step forward on Feb. 28 when the Senate Health Committee, on which I serve, passed it by a unanimous vote. It is essential that the full Senate swiftly pass this bill so that our grandfamilies can get the help they need. Among the witnesses at the Aging Committee hearing last year was Bette Hoxie, a custodial grandparent and a board member of the Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine and the Kinship Program, based in Orono. She testified that of the 3,100 families her organization works with statewide, 85 percent are headed by grandparents or great-grandparents, many due to opioid abuse. Senator Collins, Colleague Call for More Doctors STATEWIDE By 2025, the United States is estimated to need more than 100,000 new physicians to meet the growing demand for health care services across the country In response, U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Jon Tester (D-MT) wrote to the Health Resources and Services Administration, urging the agency to address the growing need for health care services by using the significant funding increase they championed to train physicians in underserved communities. This will help ensure that all Americans, particularly those who live in

rural areas, have access to quality health services. Last month, Senators Collins and Tester secured $126.5 million—double last year’s funding level— for the Teaching Health Centers Graduate Medical Education Program. For the past six years, the THCGME Program has worked to address the growing demand for health care services across the country by training medical residents in community-based settings, including low-income, underserved rural and urban neighborhoods. Medical education residents who train at teaching health centers are significantly more likely to remain in rural or

underserved communities. Senators Collins and Tester are the authors of the Training the Next Generation of Primary Care Doctors Act, which is the foundation of the funding reauthorization appropriated last month for the THCGME program. “(The Teaching Health Centers Graduate Medical Education Program) brings primary care physicians and dentists to rural and underserved communities that face critical shortages of health care professionals,� Senators Collins and Tester wrote. “The statute appropriates funding at double the prior annual appropriations level and includes new provisions to

strengthen and expand the program. Accordingly, we are writing to emphasize the importance of allocating the newly appropriated funds expeditiously and in an amount and fashion that will sustain training at existing Teaching Health Centers as directed.� “We secured a doubling of THCGME funding in order to increase the per-resident allocation for ‘filled positions,’� the Senators continued. “With this appropriated funding, we have an opportunity to ensure our nation’s teaching health centers have the resources they need to train the next generation of primary care doctors and incentivize them to work in rural and underserved areas.�

Senators Collins and Tester introduced the Training the Next Generation of Primary Care Doctors Act last August. Since then, they have been working to ensure the reauthorization and continued funding of this important program. The first Teaching Health Centers opened in 2011, and Senator Collins was present at the opening for the Penobscot Community Health Center in Bangor, Maine, which houses one of the original Teaching Health Centers. RiverStone Health in Billings, Montana, was also one of the original 11 Teaching Health Centers and is nationally recognized for its high-quality resident training and patient care.

Health & Fitness Planeteers of Southern Maine Encourage Community STATEWIDE The Planeteers of Southern Maine have been recognized for their work with Seed Grants recently awarded them from both the Natural Resources Council of Maine as well as the New England Grass Roots Environmental Foundation. The Planeteers of Southern Maine (née the Kennebunks’ Environmental Action Alliance) came together in adhoc grassroots fashion in January 2017 to encourage community efforts related to planetary stewardship, under the promise of very trying times ahead. Aligning themselves with educators, artists, local scientists, farmers, town committees and area non-profits, and in solidarity with DC’s March for Science and the internationally celebrated Earth Day, the Planeteers organized a terrific day’s worth of activity last April offering a local opportunity for dialogue, learning and expression. The event served to bring together many who’ve known each other by name only, and still more who’ve never had the opportunity to engage in indepth conversations about the varied subjects and issues represented with those on hand: scientists from astronomers to zoologists; experts and activists involved in the exploration of alternative energy sources, construction, applications, lifestyles, and waste management innovations; as well as those working on the elimination and

sequestration of pollutants from carbon and methane emissions known for their impact on global warming and climate change, as well as jetsam and marine debris known for the hazards it poses to sea life. The event served also to formalize the Planeteers fieldwork in beach clean-ups and erosion studies, both of which they conduct according to NOAA protocols, as well as instituting a “Trash Talks” series. The Planeteers are eager to have others join them in these and other efforts related to supporting others’ greening efforts. Well known in these parts is the Natural Resources Council of Maine, conveniently headquarterd just opposite of the State Capitol building, to facilitate lobbying efforts. 1 fresh beef brisket (6 pounds) 1/3 cup packed brown sugar 3/4 cup coarse sea salt 1/4 cup chopped onion 4 bay leaves, crushed 3 teaspoons pepper 2 teaspoons dried rosemary, crushed 2 teaspoons dried thyme 1-1/2 teaspoons ground allspice 1-1/2 teaspoons ground cloves 4 medium onions, sliced 4 medium carrots, sliced 2 celery ribs, sliced 2 cups stout or beef broth Rye bread, Swiss cheese slices and Dijon mustard

DIRECTIONS Place beef in a 15x10x1-in. baking pan; rub with brown sugar. Refrigerate, covered, 24 hours.

In a small bowl, mix salt, chopped onion, bay leaves and seasonings; rub over beef. Refrigerate, covered, 3 days, turning and rubbing salt mixture into beef once each day. Preheat oven to 325°. Remove and discard salt mixture. Place beef, onions, carrots, celery and stout in a roasting pan. Add water to come halfway up the brisket. Roast, covered, 4-4-1/2 hours or until meat is tender. Cool meat in cooking juices for 1 hour. Remove beef; discard vegetables and cooking juices. Transfer beef to a 13x9-in. baking dish. Refrigerate, covered, overnight. Cut diagonally across the grain into thin slices. Serve with rye bread, cheese and mustard. Yield: 14 servings. Editor’s Note: This is a fresh beef brisket, not corned beef.

The DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at the age of 33 from complications of a little known, but not uncommon, auto-immune disease. “Rose Marie Labrie has a great love for her profession as a nurse,” said Chrysa Ragnarsson, SMHC’s Special Care Unit nurse manager. “Rose includes her patients their care plan. She works with them to get out of bed several times a day to improve their healing during their hospital stay. Rose is positive and professional and staff seek her out for input on solving patient problems or concerns. Rose is a wonderful nurse and a strong advocate for her patients and their families.”

Nurses may be nominated by patients, families, and colleagues. They are chosen by a committee of nurses at Southern Maine Health Care to receive The DAISY Award. Awards are given throughout the year at presentations given in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, SMHC administration, patients, and visitors. Each honoree receives a certificate commending her or him for being an “Extraordinary Nurse,” and a beautiful and meaningful sculpture called A Healer’s Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night,” said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, president and co-founder of The DAISY Foundation. “Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. Cafe Serves It Up for Everyone SOUTH BERWICK A ribbon cutting ceremony was conducted by Holly Roberts, executive director of the York Region Chamber of Commerce on February 14 for the Grand Opening of Madison’s Cafe located on Portland Street in South Berwick. Madison’s Cafe is a breakfast, lunch and dinner restaurant that sources local ingredients and employs individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. We put an emphasis on empowering and appreciating these individuals, while helping them to develop life skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Nicole McCoomb heard about Bitty and Beaus Coffee Shop in North Carolina that employs people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. So she decided that she wanted to open up a cafe, a place for her daughter to work when she graduates from high school. Madison is a very vibrant and happy 19 year old at Marshwood High School. WELLS For three years Baby Girl lived outside as a stray. Those who knew her hated to see her endure a third winter outside, so they called Safe Haven. We initially put Baby Girl on our wait list, and she was brought in before the snow fell. At first this darling little grey and white female was hesitant and very shy. It took months before she relaxed enough to respond to other cats, but eventually she made friends with another shy kitty named Soulful. They napped and cuddled to-

gether, finding comfort sharing mutual fears. As the weeks passed, Baby Girl responded to other kitties as well. She became confident enough to walk around the room without fear, and eat with the other kitties. Soon after that, Baby Girl realized that people were just as fun to be around! She made her social breakthrough and hasn’t looked back at her shy life! Baby Girl even seeks affection from volunteers now. If she knows you, she’ll even jump in your lap and rub against you, begging for kisses and ear rubs. She’s become a real love bug and will be a wonderful family member for anyone with a quiet home. She is still getting over her initial shyness, so a loud environment would be scary for

her. It might even set her back, but in the right home, she’ll be very happy. Baby Girl is a healthy

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK Meet Elsa! This magnificently beautiful, dark calico Maine Coon kitty is approximately two years of age that came to ACAR as an owner surrender. Maine Coons take five years to fully mature, so Elsa is still a very young cat with a lot of “kittenhood� left in her and a long time to go to before she fully matures. Elsa is a bit unsettled at the moment, having been uprooted from her home and family routine quite abruptly. She is slowly decompressing in foster care and is already showing signs of becoming a little less shy and scared daily with the oneon-one attention she has been receiving. She went through a lot in her former home, but underneath it all is an absolutely sweet and loving girl. She just needs to find the “purr-fect� humans who understand how fun and quirky calicos can be, especially when she’s a Maine Coon kitty! Elsa is fully vetted, current on vaccinations, and spayed. She has passed her wellness exam and is looking forward to meeting new prospective parents in the near future. She will do best in a quiet household where there are no young children. Preferably a home where a single person, family with respectful teens or empty nesters where she can be the queen of your animal loving dreams and household would be the ideal match for her. We are not sure how she would feel about sharing her world with dogs or other kitties. Ideally we think she would do best as an only cat. I am using the jump drive right now, but I’m thinking that you gave warning about them only opening so many times and then becoming useless? I use Quickbooks for accounting and Windows 7 Home Premium for other documents. Any suggestions for this type of back up? Thanks, Rhonda Dear Rhonda, If your jump drive (or any USB data stick type of device) is the only thing you backup to, you could be at risk of losing your data just when you need it most. Here is what I would suggest. You could buy a USB external hard drive and use that to backup. It is not quite as sensitive to external conditions as the jump drive. If you go with this type of backup, you still want to replace the external hard drive every couple of years just to be safe. When you purchase a second one, you could also alternate backing up to each drive so that you have two copies of your files backed up. If you continue to use the jump drive, I would suggest that you purchase two drives and alternate them. If you backup to one drive this week, and the other drive next week, you

should never be more than a week behind if one of them fails. I would also purchase a new set of jump drives each year since they are limited in the number of times you can read/write to them. Florence Lillian (Barlow) Haggett, 105 BOOTHBAY HARBOR – Florence Lillian (Barlow) Haggett, 105 peacefully passed away on March 10, 2018 at the remarkable age of 105. Born in East Boothbay on November 13, 1912 , she lived in there until her 100th birthday. She was one of six children born to Luther and Lillian Barlow. She was predeceased by brothers Richard, Arthur, Wendell and Elliott, and her sister Katherine, as well as her husband Gilbert Mather Haggett. She was the first of her family to attend business school in Portland, and worked as a bookkeeper for Marston Brothers, Central Maine Power Co.,

where she met her eventual husband “Gib� and then worked for brother Arthur at Harbor Motors Co. Her life was one of giving unconditionally as evidenced by her 95 years of attending Boothbay Harbor Methodist Church as a Sunday school teacher, member of United Methodist Women and Life Member of Crescent Chapter #54 of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a recipient of the Boston Post Cane as the oldest citizen of Boothbay Harbor. She will long be remembered for her service to the local Public Library and the Historical Society as well as by her friends and neighbors for her kindness and blueberry muffins and buckle, chocolate chip cookies, and those amazing lemon merenque pies. She leaves behind a son Richard and his wife Jeannette Davis of Wells; a son Courtney and late wife Janet O’Sullivan (predeceased in 2007), and his present wife Anne Rollins of Wells; Five grandchildren Candace Flanders, Christian Haggett, David Haggett, Patricia Pappalardo, and Nancy Kirshner; Seven great-grandchildren - Mary Grace Miller, Emily Haggett, Anthony

was born June 21, 1966 in York, son of David M. and Arline L. (Welch) Racine. Stephen was a 1985 graduate of Wells High School. He grew up in Wells learning to hunt and fish locally and riding his motor cross bike thru those same woods. He loved Harley Davidsons and collecting all the memorabilia associated with them. At the age of 14, he starting tinkering on vehicles; later graduating from TCI in Enfield, CT as a Diesel Mechanic, which began his lifelong career. Stephen was predeceased by his father, David M. Racine in 2002. He will forever be missed by his mother, Arline L. Racine of Wells, his sister, Rebecca L. Racine of New Portland, three aunts, Valerie Bourque, Nancy Hunt, Suzanne Racine and several very dear friends who were his family; Calvin Hilton, Carl Walton, Brett Ryan, Gerald Patterson, Larry Taylor, Chris and Cathy and Kenny Milliard. There will be no services at this time. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Judson A. Redlon, 78 WELLS – Judson A. Redlon, 78, of the Barron Center in Portland, formerly of Wells, died Friday, March 9, 2018, at Maine Medical Center following a period of failing health. Judson was born February 6, 1940 in Biddeford, the son of Maynard and Mildred Hutchins Redlon, and lived at home until age 10 years, then he was placed at Pineland Center until he was 22-year-old and his parents took him home to

live with them once again and resided with them until around 2007, at which time he moved into his niece’s home. He was moved to a nursing home due to respiratory issues, eventually being placed at the Southridge home, an ICF, in 2010. He attended Creative Works System day program, where he is successful in a variety of activities and also attended CPI (Community Partner Inc) day program “Senior Enrichment� in Portland. Most recently he has resided at the City of Portland Baron Center, and was a member of the Wells Congregational Church. Survivors include a brother, Dennis B. Redlon, last known to reside in Biddeford, and a niece Bethany Chaloux, of Arundel. Judson is described by his team members as a very loving and social person, and misses having closer attachment to others. An hour of visitation will be held 10 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, March 21, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel 111 Chapel Road, Wells, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. with Reverend Charity O’Martian officiating. Spring interment will be in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk. Should Friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Bowdoin Mill Island #300, Topsham, ME 04086. ~ News & Classifieds ~ Volunteers Help Locals Warm Up SACO More than 40 community volunteers gathered last weekend at Thornton Academy to wrap storm window inserts for low income homeowners in Saco. The storm window inserts are part of a collaboration between Habitat for Humanity York County and Age Friendly Saco. Keep York County Warm! is Habitat for Human-

ity’s weatherization program which provides weatherization services at no cost for up to 40 low-income homeowners each year. Habitat utilizes rebates from Efficiency Maine’s Low-Income Home Energy Savings Program to provide each participating homeowner with $1,050 of weatherization services, LED bulbs, CO and smoke detectors and interior storm window inserts.

Volunteers from both organizations then went into homes to take measurements and provide weatherization services to participating homeowners. Wrigley Selected Student-Athlete of Month WELLS Wells High School has awarded senior Michael Wrigley the Student-Athlete of the Month Award. Wrigley received this distinction for his academics and performance on the WHS wrestling team. This is his second time receiving this award in wrestling, the first in December of 2016. Presenting a plaque to Wrigley on February 16 was WOCSD Director of Athletics 6-12 Pierce Cole, John C. Kreie of Cole Harrison Insurance Agency and Pamela MoodyMaxon of Moody Maxon Real Estate. “It’s great to get recognized twice for this, but I look at wrestling more as a team sport,” said Wrigley after the award presentation. “Arguably the best threesport athlete Wells has seen in many years,” said Kreie. “Being part of four state championship teams in the last year says a lot about this kid’s talent and leadership ability.” Scott Lewia is coach of the WHS wrestling team. “Michael is a very smart technical wrestler,” Lewia said. “He

Michael was a big part of our second consecutive state championship win here at Wells High School, winning the 195 pound weight class becoming the 43rd Wells wrestler to capture a state title.” Wrigley was a runner-up in the South Regional Championship in the 195 pound category before winning the Class B State title. He also qualified for the New England Wrestling Championships. “Michael strives to be the best in whatever he is doing both on and off the mat,” said Moody-

Maxon who has followed Wrigley since he was a fourth grade student participating in Pee Wee Wrestling. “He is a true warrior who is a great example for the younger kids. He is a fan favorite and takes time to get pictures with the younger athletes. And I’ve even seen him signing autographs after games and meets.” The Student-Athlete of the Month awards program at Wells High School is in its 12th year. It is sponsored by the Cole Harrison Insurance Agency and Moody Maxon Real Estate. Recipients of the award are chosen by the administration at Wells High School.

STATEWIDE The Maine Boatbuilders Show is in its second year, and now at the Portland Sports Complex—same show, new site. Sail, power, small and large boats are all represented at the three-day event in March in Portland. Up and down the New England coastline, boat yards are humming. Come meet the builders, see the experts, and get your boating questions answered. If you are an old salty, or new to boating, this is the show to spend the weekend with. All of the manufacturers for marine products and engines are here. Maine’s boatbuilding community is extremely diverse. There are those that build dinghies, others mega-yachts, and anywhere in between and this show is here to promote everyone. Many boat builders do not know what they will have available at show time, but what boats are coming will be announced soon. With the brain trust that is attracted to the show, there is

often animated discussions and as much going on in the aisles as in the booths. Friends make the show an annual pilgrimage. The fact that it is a gathering point and a celebration has attracted national organizations. The Maine Maritime Academy alumnae will hold a Maritime Flea Market all three days with proceeds going to support Maine Maritime Academy with scholarships. Lectures are free all three days so pick a seat for a rest, and enjoy an educational hour. There is a restaurant in the new site all on one floor. To celebrate the next generation, for the seventh year, there will be an engine diagnosis competition between the Maine vocational high schools from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday. This has grown and become very important to the industry as they search for new competent employees. What better than to see them at their best, here competing for $15K in scholarships? ~ News ~ Students Take Olympic Reading Challenge SOUTH BERWICK Sixty-five GWS reading students participated in a fourweek Winter Olympic Reading Challenge. Students chose an international flag to mark their reading progress during the four weeks of the Pyeonchang Winter Olympics. On March 1, the challenge ended and students turned in their logs to show the thousands of pages they had read since February 5. They celebrated their achievements with cake and medals for

all students, and prizes for the top six readers. Special thanks to Pumpkinman Triathlon and GWS

SOUTH BERWICK A Marshwood High School teacher’s Advanced Placement statistics class had the opportunity of participating in an open dialogue with Nick Hatley from the Pew Research Center based in Washington, DC. Kelly Crowley’s class interacted by the use of Skype. Hatley is a research analyst on the Center’s Domestic Survey Research Team. The Marshwood students were given a 40-minute presentation that addressed the types of jobs at the Pew Research Center, the surveying methods used at the center, The American Trends Panel, and the specific research that Hatley has participated in.
