What is COVID-19? COVID-19 is a novel (new) coronavirus which was first detected in December 2019 in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and has now been detected in other countries, including the United States. For some, the respiratory virus causes mild symptoms like the common cold or influenza (flu), for others it can cause severe pneumonia that requires medical care or hospitalization.
What are the symptoms? Symptoms of COVID-19 may include fever, cough, difficulty breathing, sore throat (in some patients). Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure. Most patients experience mild symptoms and can recuperate at home, but others, particularly those with underlying medical conditions, may experience more severe respiratory illness.
illnesses such as influenza and the common cold: Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer; Avoid close contact with people who are sick; Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands; Stay home while you’re sick and avoid close contact with others. Currently there is no vaccine available to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Government Update: Dine-Ins Close, Options Open
AUGUSTA Under authority granted to her in a civil state of emergency, Governor Janet Mills issued an Executive Order mandating that all restaurants and bars statewide close to dine-in customers effective Wednesday, March 18, at 6 p.m. for a period of 14 days until midnight, March 31. Such businesses that offer carry-out, delivery, and drive-through food and beverage service may continue to do so but eating and drinking inside restaurants and bars is temporarily prohibited. The Governor urges Maine people to continue to support our establishments by purchasing take-out meals or by buying gift cards or other measures of support. In her order, the Governor also prohibited gatherings of more than 10 people statewide. Gatherings subject to this Order are those that are primarily social, personal, and discretionary events not work-related events. Such gatherings include, without limitation, community,

In addition, Governor Mills strongly urged non-essential public-facing businesses, such as gyms, hair salons, theatres, casinos, shopping malls, to close their doors for the next two weeks to minimize public gatherings. This does not include businesses that provide essential services including, but not limited to: food processing, agriculture, industrial manufacturing, construction, trash collection, grocery and household goods (including convenience stores), home repair and hardware and auto repair, pharmacy and other medical facilities, biomedical and health care, child care, post offices and shipping outlets, insurance, banks, gas stations,

The entry deadline is April 15. This year’s theme explores the centennial of the transformative constitutional amendment that guaranteed the right of citizens to vote would not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex. The women’s suffrage movement expanded representative democracy and inspired other popular movements for constitutional change and reform. Reflection on that movement reveals complexity and tensions over race and class that remain part of the ongoing story of the 19th Amendment and its legacies. Recommendations for Businesses As the country deals with cases of Coronavirus, many businesses have questions about how to handle the public and their own employees. In general, it’s a good idea for any business to have an emergency plan, as well as one that can be used to cover illness outbreaks such as the one in the country now. Below, you’ll find CDC’s tips and strategies for employers to use now: Actively encourage sick employees to stay home. Employees
who have symptoms of acute respiratory illness are recommended to stay home and not come to work until they are free of fever, signs of a fever, and any other symptoms for at least 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing or other symptom-altering medicines. Ensure that sick leave policies are flexible and consistent with public health guidance and that employees are aware of these policies. Talk with companies that provide your business with contract or temporary employees about the importance of sick employees staying home and encourage them to develop nonpunitive leave policies. Do not require a healthcare provider’s note for employees who are sick with acute respiratory illness to validate their illness or to return to work, as healthcare provider offices and medical facilities may be extremely busy and not able to provide such documentation in a timely way. Employers should maintain flexible policies that permit employees to stay home to care for a sick family member. Employers should be aware that more employees may need to stay at home to care for sick children or other sick family members. Separate sick employees. CDC recommends that employees who appear to have acute
respiratory illness symptoms should be separated from other employees and be sent home immediately. Place posters that encourage staying home when sick, cough and sneeze etiquette, and hand hygiene where they are likely to be seen. Provide tissues and notouch disposal receptacles for use by employees. Instruct employees to clean their hands often with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60-95% alcohol, or wash their hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Provide soap and water and alcohol-based hand rubs in the workplace. Ensure that adequate supplies are maintained. Routinely clean all fre-
quently touched surfaces in the workplace, such as workstations, countertops, and doorknobs. Use the cleaning agents that are usually used in these areas and follow the directions on the label. Provide disposable wipes so that commonly used surfaces (doorknobs, keyboards, remote controls, desks) can be wiped
down by employees before each use. Advise employees before traveling to take certain steps. Specific travel information for travelers can be found at: www. cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/ travelers/index.html. Advise employees to check See MORE page 4...

If an employee is confirmed to have COVID-19, employers should inform fellow employees of their possible exposure in the workplace but maintain confidentiality as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Employees exposed to a coworker with confirmed COVID19 should refer to CDC guidance for how to conduct a risk assessment of their potential exposure. The Maine CDC states that one of the best resources for businesses of any size is the national CDC website at www.cdc.gov. On that site, not only will you find fact-based updates on the virus’ progression in the U.S. The Red Cross also provides tips and supplies at www.redcross. org. Hospitals Respond with Visitation Restrictions Cancelling elective procedures and non-essential office visits will allow healthcare facilities to redirect their resources to the patients who most need their help. Doing so will also conserve the protective equipment vital to providing safeguards, as well as keeping beds available in the event of a surge in demand related to COVD-19. Most importantly, this step will reduce community spread by reducing person-to-person contact. The nine local health organizations within MaineHealth are also suspending elective medical procedures and postponing non-urgent office visits to its practices in response to the coronavirus outbreak. They ask patients not call to check on the status of a procedure or office visit, but rather await notice from the hospital or practice. “We need our front-line people available to help us
manage the calls we are receiving with respect to COVID-19, which are considerable,” said Joan Boomsma, MD, Chief Medical Officer of MaineHealth. “We also want to emphasize that, if someone calls today, we may not be able to provide exact information because we are still in the process of determining what care can and should be postponed.” Patients seeking additional information about how MaineHealth is responding can find it at www.mainehealth.org. New rules are in effect immediately for visitors to Maine Medical Center in Portland and Southern Maine Health Care locations as well. New guidelines for visitors to Southern Maine Health Care facilities can be found at www. smhc.org and include: Visitation hours at Biddeford and Sanford Medical Centers are Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Limit of one visitor per patient for both inpatient and ambulatory care. This includes all hospital, ambulatory, clinic appointments, and emergency department visits; Because children can carry COVID-19 without showing symptoms, no visitor under the age of 18 will be permitted; Care teams can make exceptions in specific circumstances (i.e. pediatric patients, compassionate care); All events open to the public/community groups and meetings at any SMHC facilities are cancelled. Guidelines for MMC includes the above as well as the following and can also be found at www.mmc.org: Visitation hours at MMC are now limited See HOSPITALS page 14...

~ News ~ Berwick Community Television Benefits from Federal Court Ruling BERWICK A federal judge has upheld a Maine law requiring cable television providers to keep public access programming to low channel numbers and to present programming in high definition. These and other requirements were upheld in a decision handed up March 11 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maine. The ruling is a win for local public access community television statewide. It was good news for Berwick Community Television Director Terri Wright.“I’m extremely pleased with this ruling and believe that it will make a difference for Maine residents, municipalities and cities, along with public access stations,” said Wright. “BCTV will finally go out in high definition and we’ll be able to post our program information on Comcast’s program guide. BCTV records all of our events and meetings in high definition. With this ruling our TV viewers will now be able to
watch in the same format as recorded.” The law, LD 1371, “An Act To Ensure Nondiscriminatory Treatment of Public, Educational and Governmental Access Channels by Cable System Operators,” was signed by Governor Janet Mills in June, 2019. It affects local cable access television stations such as Berwick Community Television (also called Public, Education, and Government access channels). U.S. District Court Judge Nancy Torresen rejected cable industry arguments that the new law conflicts with federal rules on cable regulations and violates the cable companies’ First Amendment rights. “We were surprised – she ruled in our favor on all the counts,” said Tony Vigue, a cable access consultant, formerly of South Portland Public Access. James Joseph Daly, 84
SHAPLEIGH – James Joseph Daly, formerly of Gold Canyon, AZ, passed away February 26, 2020 at Maine Medical Center. He was born March 8, 1935 in Elmont, NY, the son of James and Margaret (Cochran) Daly. Jim graduated from Valley Steam High School then proudly served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict. In 1958, he married his sweetheart, Agnes Thorpe. After Jim was discharged, he began his career at Westinghouse Elevators, retiring as Construction Foreman in 1994. Jim and Agnes then relocated to Gold Canyon to enjoy their retirement. They
often traveled back East to Maine to watch their son Jimmy coach and their grandsons wrestle and granddaughter play volleyball. They also loved visiting their son Sean and family, watching him play in his band and swimming with their family. They spent time with their daughter and her family while in Arizona, enjoying many dinners together. “Big Jim” was a proud Irishman who relished in his oldfashioned ways. He stayed active and healthy his entire life. Jim had recently moved to Maine with his son’s family where he loved spending quality time with them as well as the serenity of the lake. Jim loved all animals, especially horses. Jim was pre-deceased by his wife Agnes and will be forever be missed by his two sons, James Daly and his wife Tammy of Shapleigh; Sean Daly and his wife Colleen of Bay Shore, NY; daughter Kim Pease and her husband Stan of Apache Junction, AZ; “Happy” as he was so fondly referred to will be missed by his 10 grandchildren, Shane Daly and wife Emily, Kaylee (Daly) Martel and husband Aaron, Chad Daly, Breanna and Cara Daly, Daniel

We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth.
PORTLAND With attention to the guidance from the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and upon consideration of the size of the usual congregations, Bishop Robert P. Deeley is temporarily suspending all daily and Sunday Masses and religious services throughout the Diocese of Portland (covering the entire state of Maine), effective immediately. The bishop is also issuing a dispensation from the obligation to
FUNERAL HOME
As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists.

She was born March 25, 1940 in Holyoke, MA, to Paul R. and Doris V. (McCauley) Keeping. Diana married her high school sweetheart, Lester Jr., on September 5, 1958 at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita County, TX. They were married over sixty years before Lester passed away in July of 2019. Diana and Lester enlisted in the U. S. Air Force together. They were stationed in Alaska for a few years before starting a family of their own. After serving three years in the military, Diana stayed home and focused on raising their three children. When all of her kids reached high school, she began working for the Maine Turnpike Authority where she remained for 25 years before retiring. Some of Diana’s favorite pastimes included scrapbooking, playing bingo, card games, doing crafts of all kinds, and cake decorating. On any given summer day, she and Lester could be found “yard-saling” and flea-marketing, searching for antiques and treasures. Making memories with her grandchildren was one of the most important things in Diana’s life. They would often spend time vacationing as a family, road tripping and camping throughout the United States and Canada. After retirement, Diana and Lester wintered in Tampa, FL, where they made many memories and lifelong friends. Diana was predeceased by her husband Lester G. Foss Jr; son Lester G. David A. Emery, 66 SANFORD – David A. Emery, 66 of Sanford, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2020, in SMMC Biddeford after a period of failing health. He was born October 25, 1953 the son of Alfred and Eleanor (Fife) Emery. David was a graduate of Thornton Academy in Saco. He was employed at various places over the years, among them were Lyn-Flex Shoe in Saco, Westbrook Spinning, Peck’s Store and Boothby’s Farm both Limington. David would often be seen riding his motorized chair around Sanford, Springvale and on his trips to Cumberland Farms, where he enjoyed conversing with other patrons. He loved coffee; actually, he was obsessed with it and wouldn’t do anything before he had a cup in hand. In 1975 he married Carolyn Perkins and together they raised their three children in Limington, moving to the Sanford/Springvale area in 1995. David was an avid Patriots fan. He was a best friend and companion to his wife of 44 years. His sense of humor and the love from his family brought him through many dark times. David was a kind, caring, and gentle soul who never missed an opportunity to say “I Love You”. He had fond memories of swimming in the Ossipee River in Limington with his family.
He is survived by his wife Carolyn; daughter Misty Emery; son Jason Emery and partner Jennifer Siciliani, all of Sanford; son Jeremy Emery of Buxton; three sisters Sharon Burton of Windham, Marilyn Caouette and husband Andy of West Kennebunk, and Jane Dery of Hollis Center. any help in this area. Joanne Dear Joanne, Yes, you can either erase the hard drive, or remove it from the computer before you give it away. First, did you get all your information off the computer, or do you still have files on there that you would like a copy of? Depending on how badly your hard drive itself was damaged, it is still possible to get your data off the drive, just bring the computer to a local repair shop, and let them take a look at it and give you an estimate. Hopefully, you have a good backup system in place, and getting your data off the hard drive is not an issue. The hard drive can then be securely erased, this is something your local computer shop can also do. If you prefer to just take the drive out and donate the rest of the computer, you can open it up and take out the drive. If you have a tower, the drive is about the size and shape of a ham sandwich, it is held in with 4 screws, two on each side, and is attached to the inside of the computer by a power cable and a data cable. If your computer is a laptop, the hard drive might be a lot harder to access, and I can’t really tell you exactly where it is located. Sometimes, it is under a small door on the back of the laptop, while other times, I have had to practically take apart the entire laptop just to access the hard drive. Again,
this is something your local computer shop can help you with. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am using Windows 10. Most but not all of the icons on my desktop have a small curved up-arrow on the lower left corner. What is the significance of that arrow? You do good work. Keep it up, Terry Dear Terry, The small, curved uparrow in the lower left corner of an icon means that it is a shortcut to another file. This is something you need to consider in a couple of situations. First, if you backup the shortcut file, you have not saved the actual file, just a shortcut to it. Second, if you delete the shortcut file, the actual file (either program or data) will still be on your computer. You can see where the actual file is located on your computer by right-clicking on the file, then click on “Properties” in the context menu that appears. The shortcut tab in the properties dialog box will have a section named, “Target” which will give you the location of the file that the shortcut is pointing to. Files that don’t have the shortcut arrow are either an actual file stored on your desktop, or a system file (like the recycle bin). Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a question. How do I move a line or sentence in a document I create up or down? For instance, If I placed a large

space between a line and I want to move the line up, how do I do this, or move it down. Thanks for your help, Joe Dear Joe, The placement of a line of text in your document is created by elements that are not visible, but they work just like the visible elements in your document. For example, if you wanted to remove a word in your document, you might click at the end of the word to insert your insertion point, then press the backspace key to remove each letter in the word. The remaining text will automatically move into the space created by removing the word. In the same way, when you want to remove a large space, click to insert your insertion point at the end of the space, then press the backspace key to remove the invisible characters. The line after the space will automatically move up as you remove the space. When you want to move a line in your document down, you would simply click at the beginning of the line to place your insertion point, then press the enter key on your keyboard to move the text down one line. Keep pressing the enter key until you have moved it down to the place you want it to be. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Student Actors Share a Message of Tolerance with a One-act Play
ARUNDEL In a time of increasing polarization, one school is using theater as a way for students to explore how we could relate better across our differences. School Around Us in Arundel, Maine has been a pillar of alternative education since its founding in 1970. Theater has always played an important role in the school’s holistic and experiential curriculum. Each winter, the entire school puts on a play that is performed with several public showings over one weekend in April. This past winter, 3rd-8th grade students produced a oneact play exploring issues of inclusion and difference. The play,
titled “They Eat Sunshine, Not Zebras” by Dara Murphy and produced by Theaterfolk, features a community of blades of grass who react negatively when a dandelion appears in their midst. Teacher and director Rae-a Moughty explained, “What I liked about this play was that it felt accessible to everyone without being preachy. This play holds a mirror up to society. It reflects back to us the different roles we take on when we are faced with someone or something that is different.” Students at School Around Us are studying migration this year, and the play fit with their curriculum and offered a creative way to learn about these topics ex-

perientially. Moughty continued, “This play fits in really well with the themes we are studying as it reflects back how we welcome people into our community… or don’t. To really welcome people we have to accept who they are and where they have come from, and not be afraid of what we might learn about ourselves in the process. Due to our close knit student population across age groups, our students had a
lot of trust in each other when it came to philosophical and honest discussions about tolerance, acceptance, bias, discrimination, stereotypes, and peer pressure. I was amazed with how honest they could be about their own actions and experiences.” When the play was performed at the Dorothy Stevens Community Center in Kennebunk, Rob Laprise, a former SAU parent and current middle

school teacher at Bonny Eagle Middle School (BEM) in Buxton, was in the audience. He was so impressed with the performance and the message of the play, that he saw an opportunity to share the experience with students at BEMS. Together with Moughty, other School Around Us teachers, parents and staff, they worked with administrators at BEMS and arranged for two performances by School Around Us actors for the student body of BEMS. Laura Laprise, Administrative Director of School Around Us explained, “There were nine student actors in the play. The actors also helped support painting the props and designing the program cover. Many School Around Us parents supported and participated in making this show a reality – repairing lighting and sound equipment, transporting students and gear.” For more information, visit www.schoolaroundus.org.
Steven Wells Photo Exhibit BIDDEFORD Fine art photographer Steven Wells, of Wells, will exhibit his dramatic new coastal Maine photographs at Elements: Books, Coffee, Beer, located at 265 Main St., Biddeford, on view through April 12. The images, all framed, are for sale. Wells specializes in creating stunning landscape and seascape fine art images of New England. “I enjoy the ability of mixing photography and computer technology to create beautiful images to share with people,” said Wells, a retired computer industry executive who lives in Wells. “When I am out shooting, I am drawn to images that show depth, variations in light, texture and contrast,” said Wells. “I am particularly drawn to capturing images of New England coastal scenes and Maine countryside settings.” He has been a photographer most of his life, beginning in elementary school when he shot movies on an 8-mm camera. Later on, he created cibachrome and black-and-white prints. He also shot and developed color slides. Today, he uses Pentax digital cameras with a variety of lenses to capture his images. Wells does all of his own printing and framing. “To me, the framed print is the ultimate photographic statement, not images viewed on the screen from the internet. A printed image is something you can see, touch and get close to. It can be shared and appreciated by many for generations to come,” he said. For details, visit www.stevenwells.photoshelter.com.

Health & Fitness Tips for Boosting Immune System! According to the CDC, the Covid-19 virus is much more aggressive than the flu. Those at greater risk are over 50, have diabetes, a heart condition, a compromised immune system, are smokers, and are overweight. If one is immunocompromised and develops this virus, they may develop pneumonia. There are no anti-viral medications or vaccines to prevent it. Therefore, it is vital to boost our immune system. This may help us from developing pneumonia, which can be fatal. A healthy immune system is dependent on the quality of the food we eat, sleep patterns, and exercise. Even the best immune system is subject to exposure to bacteria, environmental toxins, and viruses. There is a connection between nutrition and immunity. If you are eating healthy, you may still not be getting all the nutrients required to keep your immune system healthy. Some people may experience “micronutrient malnutrition” (deficiency in some essential vitamins and trace minerals). There are several essential nutrients, herbs, and probiotics needed to help strengthen your immune system, which can shorten recovery time from illness. Nutrients Liposomal Vitamin C is a supplement that can be helpful for your immune system. You must eat lots of foods containing Vitamin C (potatoes, citrus fruits, and strawberries) in order to get enough into your system. Vitamin A has an antioxidant effect and helps strengthen the immune system. Carotenoids are found in colorful foods such as: cantaloupe, carrots, pumpkin, and sweet potatoes, and are turned into Vitamin A Vitamin B6 supports nearly 200 biochemical reactions in the immune system and is critical for the function of your immune system. B6 can be found in foods such as bananas, chicken and cold-water fish such as salmon and tuna. Vitamin B6 is also found in green vegetables and in chickpeas. Vitamin D Many people have difficulty with absorption of this vitamin. Therefore, it may be best to take a supplement. Ask your health care provider to test your vitamin D level. The result should be in the upper half of normal.
Foods that are high in vitamin D include: fatty fish (maceral, salmon, sardines, and tuna), and fortified foods including, milk, cereals, and orange juice. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps the body fight off infection. Foods rich in vitamin E include almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, seeds, broccoli and spinach. Zinc helps slow the immune response and controls inflammation. Zinc is found in various meats and fish. Quercetin is a flavonoid found in plant foods, leafy greens, broccoli, berries, and tomatoes. Quercetin has anti-inflammatory and anti-viral effects and is best when combined with Bromelain (compound found in pineapples), which aids in wound healing and has anti-inflammatory effects. They both have powerful healing properties.

Free Version of Safety Resources App Available ARLINGTON, VA LiveSafe Inc. announced it is making a free, limited version of its industry-leading safety and two-way communications app, as well as the platform’s Command & Communications Dashboard, available to any business, college, university or healthcare institution that needs an effective means for employees or students to anonymously communicate their concerns and receive important information about the COVID-19 outbreak. The COVID-19 Safety Resources App will enable members of an organization’s workforce or student body to engage in two-way communications with their COVID-19
coordination or response team. Rather than relying on email or emergency notification systems, the LiveSafe Platform offers a more efficient and discreet way for organizations to engage their workforce and students during a time of limited resources and rapidly changing information. “We are all in this together and we are stronger when we come together as communities to address critical safety, security and health concerns,” said LiveSafe President and CEO Carolyn Parent. “In a dynamic environment like the COVID-19 situation, being able to provide accurate information, mitigate your employee’s concerns, and get inbound information about their status can be overwhelm-
ing to safety and security teams. LiveSafe enables two-way chat and broadcast, and offers needed anonymity so you can quickly identify who needs help and deliver accurate information to your workforce or student population.” This special offer will provide organizations three key LiveSafe features on the LiveSafe Mobile App, as well as the LiveSafe Command & Communications Dashboard. Coronavirus Questions: Through the LiveSafe App, your employees or students can submit questions or seek information from your organization’s Coronavirus response team. Real-time chat and anonymous submissions are available. Access CDC COVID-19 Guidance: Get one-touch access to the latest information from the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. Emergency Call: Call 911 with the touch of a button. LiveSafe will automatically route your 911 call to the nearest 911 call center, regardless of your location. Broadcast Messaging: Use LiveSafe’s Command & Communications Dashboard (privilege based), to broadcast critical COVID-19 information and communicate with your community in real-time. The LiveSafe App and the Command & Communications Dashboard can help you manage the risk of the Coronavirus to your community. The App will be made available for both iOS and Android. To learn more about how to order the free LiveSafe COVID19 Safety Resources App, go to www.livesafemobile.com/contingency. Follow LiveSafe on Twitter @LiveSafe, and learn more at LiveSafeMobile.com.

Individuals will also be asked if they have been in close proximity with someone who is currently sick with the COVID-19 or any other respiratory illness within the past 14 days. (mayoclinic. org) Quit Smoking Smoking and vaping weakens lung function, leaving people more susceptible to viruses, bacterial infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. Now is a good time to quit smoking. Stay Hydrated Water helps your body produce lymph, which carries white blood cells and other immune system cells. Avoid drinking beverages containing caffeine as they can make you dehydrated. You can swap coffee for green tea as it has anti-viral effects. Eat more hydrating foods, such as cucumbers, celery, and watermelon. Limit watermelon as it has a high glycemic index, which can cause a rise in blood sugar. Wash Your Hands Although most germs are airborne, illness often occurs after you touch a contaminated surface then touch your face, eyes, nose, or mouth. Maine’s small businesses and their workers are the backbone of our economy, and I understand that these actions will not only impact them, they will also disrupt the lives of Maine people,” said Governor Janet Mills. “However, COVID-19 continues to spread across Maine and more aggressive action is required to mitigate that spread

WELLS Safe Haven’s shelter was already closed due to a few kitties testing positive for ringworm. Now with the coronavirus pandemic, we’re not sure we’ll have enough volunteers to keep our thrift shop open. So please be patient if we have to close our shop at times. Our shop, of course, is the financial backbone of our shelter, and with the added expenses of ringworm testing and treat-

It’s been a great learning experience, working with the feral cats at our shelter who cannot be treated for ringworm because they are too fearful. We’re hopeful they will “self cure” as medical experts say they can. Cats have a better chance to self cure if they remain happy and unstressed, and we keep that in mind. We use Feliway sprays to calm them, provide environmental comforts, catnip and cat treats, but the best thing of all is a See HAVEN page 23...

Appropriations Act that was recently signed by the President, to declare a disaster following a request received from Gov. Janet T. Mills on March 13, 2020. The disaster declaration makes SBA assistance available in the entire state of Maine and the contiguous counties of Carroll, Rockingham and Stratford in New Hampshire. “SBA is strongly committed to providing the most effective and customer-focused response possible to assist Maine small businesses with federal disaster loans. We will be swift in our efforts to help these small businesses recover from the financial impacts of the Coronavirus (COVID-19),” said Administrator Carranza.
SBA Customer Service Representatives will be available to answer questions about SBA’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan program and explain the application process. “These loans may be used to pay fixed debts, payroll, accounts payable and other bills that can’t be paid because of the disaster’s impact. Disaster loans can provide vital economic assistance to small businesses to help overcome the temporary loss of revenue they are experiencing,” Carranza added. Eligibility for Economic Injury Disaster Loans is based on the financial impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). The interest rate is 3.75 percent for small businesses. The interest
rate for private non-profit organizations is 2.75 percent. SBA offers loans with long-term repayments in order to keep payments affordable, up to a maximum of 30 years and are available to entities without the financial ability to offset the adverse impact without hardship. Applicants may apply online, receive additional disaster assistance information and download applications at https://disasterloan.sba. gov/ela. Applicants may also call SBA’s Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955 or email disastercustomerservice@sba.gov for more information on SBA disaster assistance. Individuals who are deaf or hard-of-hearing may call 800-877-8339. Completed applications should be mailed to U.S. Small Business Administration, Processing and Disbursement Center, 14925 Kingsport Road, Fort Worth, TX 76155. The deadline to apply for an Economic Injury Disaster Loan is December 16. For more information about available SBA resources and services, visit www.sba.gov/ coronavirus.

Providers also must present community access channel programming in high definition, not downgrade it to standard definition as they do now. The ruling upheld the mandate that cable providers must provide infrastructure (cable) in low-population areas. Also, cable providers must list cable access channel programming in on-screen schedules, which is
not done presently. “In this age of hundreds of available channels, an electronic program guide is, effectively, the only way that subscribers can figure out what is available to watch,” said Berwick Town
Manager Steve Eldridge on the new programming guide requirements. The Internet and Television Association, representing cable providers, filed the lawsuit. In response to the ruling, the association issued a statement: “We continue to believe that Maine’s burdensome network build-out and PEG (Public, Education and Government use) requirements conflict with federal law and should be preempted, and that the PEG mandates independently violate cable operators’ First Amendment rights.” Maine public access cable channels have been carried for decades on lower-numbered channels alongside the cable

Sweet Dirt and ArchSolar to Break Ground ELIOT Sweet Dirt LLC, a Mainebased cannabis company, and ArchSolar, a provider of environmentally sustainable greenhouses, have partnered to build a state-ofthe-art 32,800 sq.ft. extreme-light deprivation greenhouse. Construction begins in January and the facility will be located at Sweet Dirt’s headquarters in Eliot, where voters last November overwhelmingly approved an ordinance and licensing procedure allowing for adult use cannabis cultivation, manufacturing and
retail operations. Optimized for harsh climates, the multi-bay greenhouse will feature exceptional thermal performance, best-in-class snow and wind load capacity, an automated louvered intake and exhaust system, an automated light-deprivation (shade) system, and more. As sustainability is a critical consideration in all of Sweet Dirt’s decisions, the ability to leverage natural light to reduce electrical usage, was a large part of Sweet Dirt’s decision to partner with ArchSolar.
