50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War Commemorated AUGUSTA Some 6.4 million men and women living today served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces during this country’s involvement in Vietnam from November 1, 1955, to May 7, 1975. Whether stationed in-country, in-theater, or elsewhere during those two decades, they answered the call to duty. Across the nation, Americans continue uniting to thank and honor Vietnam Veterans and their families for their ser-

vice and sacrifice. To honor both the living Vietnam Veterans and the 9 million families of those who served, there will be a Vietnam Veteran War Commemoration Observance on Thursday, March 28, 10-11:30 a.m. at 1 VA Center, Augusta, Building 210 in the theater. On March 28, 2017, President Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act, to recognize and thank Vietnam Veterans and their

families for their service and sacrifice during one of the longest wars in our country’s history. This Act designates every March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. The Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services will observe National Vietnam War Veterans Day at the State House (Hall of Flags) in Augusta on Friday, March 29, 1-4 p.m. The afternoon’s events will include See VIETNAM page 7...

long; we twisted with the bus as we drove through the green sugar cane fields and black volcanic rocks. There were small villages and crowded towns with rundown buildings and weathered, smiling people. Dogs ran loose all over the place, skinny and wild. It’s definitely a different place. We stayed at a motel with no hot water but comfortable beds. The water was unsafe to drink due to parasites. We had to be careful. We stayed away from lettuce and food washed with water. Chief Towne Receives Statewide Award BERWICK The Maine Association of Police (MAP) held its 20th Annual Awards Banquet at the Portland Elks Club recently. Chief Timothy Towne of the Berwick police department had the honor of being selected as this year’s recipient of the David W. Pickering Award as Chief of the Year. This award, which is named in honor of the Cape Elizabeth police chief and president of MAP who died in 2000, is presented to the chief who has shown outstanding support for and made contribu-

tions to MAP. It was noted that Chief Towne started his career in 1993 as a reserve officer with the Berwick police. He then rose through the ranks to become a detective, sergeant, captain, and then chief of police. Towne makes sure that his officers have the tools and training for on-thejob challenges. He covers patrol shifts to let his officers attend to personal matters if needed. Chief Towne has made it his mission to keep his officers safe, as well as treated fairly and with respect.

Police Chief Timothy Towne (left) won the David W. Pickering award recently. Last year’s winner of the award was Chief Michael Morrill of Yarmouth (right).

Nicole was so inspired by what she saw at the Boca Costa Library in Guatemala she’s kicking off a campaign in Kittery to help raise some of the $1,900 required annually to keep it open. Madeline, a junior at Portland High School, shared her observations of their adventure: With growing excitement, our team of eleven people climbed onto this tiny yellow bus with red leather seats. Sergio, someone who by the end of the week would be a close friend, drove with one hand on the steering wheel and the other holding his phone to his ear as he maneuvered through

...LIBRARY from page 1 which I found out I don’t like. The sun was always shining and the heat was bearable. With lots of sunscreen we worked outside in the comfortable breeze. The bugs weren’t bad at all. Our team was split into two groups: the medical team and the construction team. I was part of the construction team. We got to paint a house for a family moving in soon. On the way there we got to ride in the back of a truck, something I’ve never done. On the busy, very crowded, and high-speed roads we traveled to the house. In the afternoon we played with the local kids of the village where we stayed. They were so well behaved and ready for anything we had for them. I was able to practice my limited knowledge of Spanish. Serena (one of the teammates my age) and I worked well together figuring out what these kids were saying. What really struck me was the graciousness of the people. We didn’t do much by my standards, but to them it seemed a lot. Throughout the week we distributed little care packages with toothpaste, toothbrushes, lollipops, a snack, and arts-and-crafts material. When playing with the kids, some would fight over who got to hold my hand. It was an

amazing experience playing with these kids who were so excited we were there for them. There was a woman named Antonia who worked for the library in a small mountain village we visited. She told us the library was a main community spot and was so grateful we were there to paint it. By the end of each day we were covered in paint, but it was worth it seeing the smile on her face when we finished. All the hard work we did was worth it when we got to see the faces of the people we impacted. There was one family of about eight to ten people, who lived in this small compound house. The kitchen was dark and cluttered with dishes. The sink was full of water for dishes, cooking, washing. We were to build a stove. It went in the corner next to a makeshift stove with no ventilation. I was told by one of the doctors on our team that respiratory issues were among the problems they treated at the clinic. I could see why when we walked into this small space used to take care of so many people. The wood was charred black, with soft coals heating up a soup of some sort. The door was open and there was a small window on the other side of the room, but other than that there was no ventilation. We were able to easily put together this stove, which requires less

It was a shock to see them living in conditions we as Americans would think of as horrible. But I needed the experience, to understand we have a lot of benefits we take for granted. I appreciate it more. It means I can step into my life, as I enter adulthood, and look at what I have differently. I have the privilege to be born in a first-world country. I’m lucky and not many people are this lucky. This is something we need to acknowledge and not take for granted. William Hersey, an 8th grader at Marshwood Marshwood Middle School, has also been named by National Geographic Society as a semifinalist in the 2019 Maine National Geographic State Bee. The State Geo Bee will be held at the University of Maine at Farmington on March 29. This step represents the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, now

in its 31st year. National Geographic Bees were held in schools with fourth through eighth grade students throughout the state to determine each school champion. School champions then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. NGS has invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students, including Mabel, in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the state bees. The state champion will advance to the National Geographic GeoBee Championship May 19-22 at the National Geographic Society headquarters in Washing-

ton, D.C. This year, the national champion will receive a $25,000 college scholarship, $1,000 in cash, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, and a trip to the GalĂĄpagos Islands. Second and third place winners receive a $10,000 and $5,000 college scholarship, respectively, and $1,000 cash prize. The National Geographic Society is a leading non-profit that invests in bold people with transformative ideas in the fields of exploration, scientific research, storytelling and education. The society aspires to create a community of change, advancing key insights about the planet and probing some of the most press-

ing scientific questions of our time, all while ensuring that the next generation is armed with geographic knowledge and global understanding. For more information, visit www.nationalgeographic.org.

~ News ~ Patnaude Wins WJHS’s National Geography Bee WELLS Before a large audience of excited students and staff assembled in the Ward Gymnasium at Wells Junior High School on January 23, 7th-grade student David Patnaude became the school’s champion in the local portion of the National Geographic Bee. Jackson Koh, another 7th-grade student and a good friend of David’s, became runner-up. For a little over an hour, the ten contestants responded to challenging geography questions in the school-level of competition for thousands of the nation’s 4th through 8th-grade students in the 31st National Geographic Bee sponsored by the National Geographic Society in Washington D.C. According to this organization, the contest is “an annual competition designed to inspire and reward students’ curiosity about the world.” The other eight competing were Tad Allaire (grade 6), Owen Clarke (grade 8), Matt Gahagan (grade 7), Spencer Carpenter (grade 7), Nick Olsen (grade 8), Eli Potter (grade 6),

PJ Fortin (grade 6), and Ryan Chase (grade 8). All of these students were the highest scorers from the classroom-bees held earlier in January. This process allows for every student, grades 5-8, to have a chance to compete. “This year’s competition was really fun to organize,” said social studies teacher and contest moderator Bonnie Dill. “The contestants were all very motivated to compete and have always been highly interested in geography as students in class over their years at WJHS.” “This (event) engages the student body audience because they all know what it is like to be answering questions,” said Bonnie Dill. “Kids can relate to the notion that you have to know your stuff but there is still an element of luck-of-the-draw with a

WASHINGTON, D.C. On Maine’s 199th birthday, U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME) and Representatives Chellie Pingree (D-ME) and Jared Golden (D-ME) wrote to the United States Postal Service (USPS) expressing their strong support for creating a commemorative postal stamp in celebration of Maine’s bicentennial on March 15, 2020. “Since joining the Union 199 years ago as the 23rd state in 1820, Maine has contributed enormously to the social fabric of our country,” the Maine Delegation wrote. “The people of Maine are diverse, hard-working, and kind. Grateful in good times and resilient in bad, Main-

bee format.” In the final championship round, with just Patnaude and Koh remaining, the two continued on with nine tie-breaking questions until Patnaude broke the stalemate successfully by answering a question that Koh missed. “Making it to the championship round was welldeserved for both of these boys; they have great work ethics,” commented Dill. Patnaude, who is in line to represent WJHS at the state bee on March 29 at the University of Maine at Farmington, must now pass a brief written test. Judges for the bee included teachers Susie Dugovic and John Covino. The timekeeper was Dan MacLeod. Prizes for the 10 finalists included a Toblerone chocolate bar, a puzzle ball

~ News ~ MEF Awards York County Teachers YORK COUNTY Pam Starkey, 2016 York County Teacher of the Year, and Devan Webber have been awarded a grant from the Marshwood Education Foundation. Pam participated in a teacher leadership conference held by Educate Maine and the Maine Teachers of the Year Association

at Colby College. That conference was called “Elevating and Celebrating Effective Teachers and Teaching or “ECET2 for short. Pam says it was one of the best conferences she has ever attended as a teacher. Pam participated in this conference three times. Once as an attendee in 2016, as a colleague circle leader in 2017 and then as a breakout presenter in 2018. In 2017 she invited her district colleague, Eliot Elementary School teacher, Devan Webber,

to attend. Pam and Devan recently learned there would be no state-level convening. ECET2 Convenings, at their core, are focused on teacher leadership, collaboration, and innovative instructional practices. They knew they needed to bring ECET2 to the teachers of York County. They received a donation from the ECET2 Maine and quickly began planning the event to elevate and celebrate the teachers in York county. They applied for and were awarded a grant of $1000 by the Marshwood Edu-

cation Foundation. They plan to hold this conference at the begin-

Ray Calabro and Keith Fletcher Musical Performance Tuesday, March 26 at 6:30 p.m.

YORK The York Public Library is pleased to announce Joyce Andersen and Harvey Reid as the next featured guests in its program series, “Who Are the People in Our Neighborhood”. Harvey and Joyce will be speaking on Tuesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. They are 21st century troubadours who have lived quietly in York for 25 years, breaking the norms of musician life. No longer touring nationally, and not living in New York or Nashville, they are instead raising two boys, while performing locally and regionally. Throughout their long careers as widely-respected American acoustic musicians, they have created more than fifty highly-acclaimed recordings and books, and have earned numerous honors and considerable recognition for their art. Joyce is at the forefront of revolutionizing the solo violin, and her songs are being sung all over the world. The local women’s

chorus, Voices from the Heart, recently sang one for Bishop Desmond Tutu in South Africa. Harvey has been the national fingerpicking guitar and autoharp champion, and one of his CDs was the only one in the last 25 years to be included in Acoustic Guitar Magazine’s Top 10 Folk albums of all time. Active members of First Parish Church of York, they lead the music at the Thursday fellowship dinner, and perform on the Parish Green in the summer. They continue to write, compose, and mentor other musicians and seek fulfilling artistic careers close to home. Joyce is working on a new audio and video album of her songs, and Harvey is researching and writing a landmark book chronicling the American troubadour. The library is located at 15 Long Sands Road, York. FMI: 207-363-2818 or www.york.lib. me.us.

One of the library’s favorite performers, Ray Calabro, will be returning to play songs on his guitar.

ets in jars for 54 different items to be drawn later in the evening. From a Scratch ticket basket, to numerous liquor and wine baskets, hair and bath products, many gift certificates to restaurants and massage establishments to pillows, paintings, quilts, and more, the tables gave everyone an opportunity to take home something. A quick pre-dinner auction of three special items got the ball rolling for the bigger event. Many paddles were raised through the course of the auction with the highest bid of the evening going for a white-water rafting trip for 4 with lodging and meals included. Auction over and dinner plates cleared, the music was turned up and the dance floor came alive. 10 o’clock came way too fast but what a great way to

close out another memorable and successful evening. A huge thank you for the Auction and Raffle donations go to Angel of the Berwick’s, Hair Shop, Andy’s Detailing, York Harbor Inn, Dunlap Accounting, Willow Brooke Farm, Sonya Markham, Johnson’s Seafood, Bobs Clam Hut, Cinco de Mayo, Los Olas, Bubba Frye’s, Lord’s Clambox, Rococo Ice Cream, 31 Bags - Jennifer Downs, Aroma Joe’s, Dunn’s Farm, Maine Diner, Jewelers Outlet, Cherabella Salon and numerous others who donated sports memorabilia, massages, baskets and ski tickets. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Student Artwork From Japan to be Exhibited at BA SOUTH BERWICK Through a partnership, Friends of Aomori, Berwick Academy is pleased to host Hashi, the second annual Maine-Aomori student print exchange exhibit at Berwick Academy’s Jackson Library Gallery in South Berwick, from March 27 to April 12. Hashi means “bridge” in Japanese. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 28, 4-6 p.m. Friends of Aomori is a nonprofit organization striving to improve the relationship between the State of Maine and Aomori Prefecture, Japan. This exhibit will feature over 70 prints made by students in Kindergarten through grade 6 from Aomori, Japan. Raegan Russell, Berwick Academy Visual Art Chair traveled to Aomori as a teacher delegate in November, 2018 and that trip sparked this exhibition. “I was chosen by Maine’s Friends of Aomori Foundation to represent Maine in a cultural exchange between sister-states Maine and Aomori, Japan.” says Russell “As a guest of the Rotary Club and Friends of Aomori, Japan, I was given hands-on workshops in traditional Japanese woodblock printmaking as it is taught in elementary schools, and conducted a series of school visits where students were engaged in printmaking to create work to submit for the es-

teemed printmaking competition in March. My role was to ‘build bridges’ between our two states, and to facilitate a student artwork exchange. Berwick students regularly work in printmaking, but this was an opportunity for them to learn Japanese woodblock techniques, and to connect with students in Japan. We are so pleased to exhibit artwork from

the students in Aomori in our gallery, while Berwick student artwork is simultaneously exhibited in Japan. For students in Aomori, printmaking is not only an artistic expression, but a link to a long, rich cultural tradition.” In addition to Hashi, Friends of Aomori sponsors Maine-Aomori Printmaking Society (MAPS), an exchange of work between professional printmakers in Maine and Aomori that is entering its fourth year, and has resulted in twenty exhibitions throughout Aomori and Maine. Friends of Aomori supports high-school exchange programs, educational events and programming about Japan, and economic development opportunities such as a delegation visit of Maine fisherman and aquaculture business leaders to Aomori in October 2016. Friends of Aomori is an all-volunteer nonprofit that supports the sister state relationship.

Hackmatack Camp in its 40th Year

Campers at Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick rehearse on the stage where professional actors will perform that night. The camp is enrolling for the summer of 2019.

BERWICK While the tween campers are rehearsing for “Jungle Book” this summer at Hackmatack Playhouse, they are apt to run into the adult actors rehearsing for their main stage productions. And when the young actors take the stage for their final performance in August, they will appear on the very same stage as the actors they have been meeting with throughout the summer on

Hackmatack’s rural fields in Berwick. This mingling of campers and professional actors is part of what defines Hackmatack Camp, now in its 40th year. “The kids are there at the same time as the actors. so the actors come by and play some of the theater games,” said Christopher Gempp of Dover, who will be directing the camp for See CAMP page 17...

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, Somehow my Chrome page has been hijacked by a nasty browser called Binkisland. I cannot find a way to get rid of it other than to download more spyware such as Spyware Clear (I think that ís what it ís called). Luckily I researched that before I used it. Any suggestions? Thanks so much. You’ve never failed to answer my questions. Terrie Dear Terrie, There has been a lot of this type of browser hijacking going on lately. What happens is that the browser gets set to a search engine with an affiliate link embedded, then when you go to search for something, the malware writer gets advertising revenue from your searches. Your best bet for getting rid of this type of thing is to use Emsisoft Emergency Kit at: emsisoft.com/en/home/emergencykit. If that doesn’t undo the home page hijack, bring it in to myself or your local computer repair shop and we would be happy to fix it for you. There are several ways that the malware can set your home page, and many of them involve ed-

iting the registry, which is not something you should do yourself. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a problem with downloading windows 10 updates, does any one else have this problem? It won’t download and even my tech friends can’t get it to download. Please help... Thanks, Arlene Dear Arlene, If even your tech friends can’t get the service pack to download and install, it is probably because Windows Update has corrupted files. I see this on computers in my shop every few months. If that is the case, your best solution is to backup your files, erase the hard drive, and install a clean copy of Windows 10. Then you will be able to do

all your updates and get Windows 10 up to date. This is something that you should get a tech to do, make sure it is someone you trust to make sure your files are backed up first. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a new Gateway Computer with Windows 10. I could always make a shortcut on my desktop from my old computer running XP. I cannot make a shortcut with this PC with windows 10. I right click on my desktop, go down to “new” in the box and it says “empty”. Keep clicking and I cannot create a shortcut. Do you have any answers for my problem.? I use shortcuts quite a bit. Thank you, Wilma Dear Wilma, I use an easier method to create shortcuts, and it should

work in any version of Windows. Here is how. 1. Open Windows explorer and navigate to the folder containing the file you want to create your shortcut to. 2. Using your RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON, drag the file from its location to your desktop. 3. When you release your right mouse button, you will see a small context menu appear, click on the option that says, “Create Shortcut Here” to create a shortcut to your file. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am in the new world of Windows 10. Wow. Any tips to using this new world would be helpful I have found some help sites, but you do things so nicely I thought I would ask again. Instructions for Windows 10? Bob Dear Bob,

I would be happy to answer your questions about Windows 10, although I always do better answering a specific question about how to do a task, than just giving tips. For today though, I will give you a quick tip. As you probably know, shutting down your Windows 10 computer can be tricky. To make things a little bit easier, you can use the keyboard combination, ALT + F4 to close any open windows, if you hold down the ALT key and keep pressing F4, it will close all open windows, and then begin the process of shutting down. A different keyboard shortcut to shut down would be to hold down the Windows key and press the letter X to bring up a menu, then press the letter U two times to shutdown. I hope this helps. Elizabeth

Middle School in Plaistow, NH. We have that time to focus on the skills base as well as putting on a good show at the end. In fact, the Disney version of “Jungle Book was chosen for the camp production because of the “ensemble nature of the show, Gempp said. Last year, many of the campers and their families complimented the choice of “Alice in Wonderland because so many of the campers got to be on stage so often and featured in so many different ways. He found similar attributes in “Jungle Book.

Governor Mills Signs Legislation Protecting Health Care Coverage AUGUSTA Flanked by lawmakers and health care advocates, Governor Janet Mills signed into law a bill protecting health care coverage for Maine families. The legislation, LD1, sponsored by Senate President Troy Jackson and Speaker of the House Sara Gideon, passed by strong bipartisan majorities and codifies into state law the patient protections outlined in the Affordable Care Act. “I will not leave critical health care protections for Maine people to the whims of Congress or the Courts. I am proud that our state has taken the important step of strengthening the laws that protect critical coverage for people with pre-existing conditions and other essential health benefits, said Governor Mills. “From this moment on, Maine people can rest assured that, regardless of whatever happens outside of Maine, they will not be denied coverage here in Maine.

“For me, this bill has always been personal. As someone who has a preexisting condition and who has gone without health insurance, I understand what threats to patient protections mean for families. People with preexisting conditions cannot afford for things to go back to the way they were, said President Troy Jackson, D-Allagash. “While we still have a long way to go to make health care more affordable and more accessible for everyone, I hope workers and parents can all breathe a sigh of relief knowing lawmakers in Maine have their backs. In Maine, there are an estimated 230,000 non-elderly adults living with pre-existing conditions. In addition to ensuring that no Mainer living with pre-existing conditions is denied health care coverage, LD 1 “An Act to Protect Health Care Coverage for Maine Families, also prohibits charging seniors substantially higher rates due to age; bans lifetime and annual caps on coverage, allows young adults up to age 26 to remain on their parents’ insurance, and requires ten essential health benefits, such as ambulance services, prescription drugs and pediatric care.

Colorectal Cancer Alliance Receives $500 from Bank YORK COUNTY SIS is honored to announce that its most recent $500 gift (as part of the Bank’s monthly Employee Donation Program) has been given to nonprofit Colorectal Cancer Alliance. Kimberly Page is the 36th employee to have the honor of naming an organization for the donation program. The Colorectal Cancer Alliance was established to support patients, fighters and champions of colorectal cancer. The Alliance works with these individuals to em-

power action within the community to push for better policies on cancer treatment as well as to support research, education and awareness of colorectal cancer for all those touched by this disease. The Alliance’s approach centers around the power of working with passionate and informed individuals to advocate for research to lead to a cure. Page, Deputy BSA/Security Officer of SIS Bank, selected the Colorectal Cancer Alliance in memory of SIS Bank dear friend and employee of 30 years, Laura Toth, who passed away

from colorectal cancer on February 22. “Kimberly, you have touched our hearts and our souls with your donation in memory of Laura,” says SIS Bank President & CEO Blaine Boudreau. “Thank you for kicking off our third year of this monthly employee donation program with such a meaningful organization.” For more information on the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, including how you can get involved with this nonprofit organization, go to www.ccalliance.org.

The Right Foods Can Fight Inflammation The human body and its immune system excels at fighting foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. Signaling chemicals called interleukins tell cells whether they are needed to fight illness or they should wait in the wings. While these immune defenders are doing their jobs, soreness, fatigue and swelling can occur — the natural side effects of an immune system response — but will soon dissipate. However, many people deal with immune systems that are consistently revved up, even when no invaders are present. This is the problem with many chronic diseases and immune system dysfunction. Unfortunately, the inflammation that is a hallmark of immune defense becomes a daily problem that may result in chronic pain and other complications. What many people may not realize is that the foods that they are putting into their bodies may exacerbate inflammatory re-

sponses, while others may help keep inflammation at bay. People with rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, Hashimoto’s, and other chronic illnesses may find that turning to the right diet can tame inflammation and other symptoms. Recently, many health experts, including Dr. Barry Sears, founder of the Inflammation and Research Foundation and author of the “Zone Diet,” and Dr. Andrew Weil, who offers the Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid, have begun to tout certain foods that are purported to reduce inflammatory response over an extended period of time. As beneficial as some foods can be, it’s important to note that individuals are unique and certain foods may produce a particular response in some but not in others. Systematically isolating certain foods can help paint a picture of foods that can be problematic. But generally speaking, refined carbohydrates, sugar-sweetened beverages, fried

foods, and processed meats may increase inflammation, advises Harvard Health Publishing. Conversely, certain foods and beverages that have been identified as reducing inflammation for many people. These include: tomatoes; olive oil; green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables; nuts, like almonds and walnuts; fatty fish; berries; avocados; green tea; peppers; grapes; turmeric; dark chocolate. Including these foods in one’s daily diet may help to reSee FOOD page 26...

Tips on Credit Card Balance Transfers Balance transfers offer consumers the opportunity to reduce the amount of interest owed and pay down their credit card debt faster. This can be a nifty tactic when done right — but the numbers don’t make sense in all cases, which can lead to costly challenges down the road. A balance transfer entails moving the balance from one credit card to another card with a lower interest rate. Seems great on the surface, but extra fees and conditions could potentially negate the benefits if borrowers aren’t careful. “For many, a balance transfer is a straight-forward solution,” said Michael Sullivan, a personal financial consultant with Take Charge America, a national nonprofit credit counseling and debt management agency. “However, I always recommend doing some research before committing to transferring any balances. You need to make sure you can realistically pay off the balance before steeper rates kick in. Failure to do so could set

you back further in your journey to become debt-free.” Sullivan offers consumers guidance on whether or not a balance transfer makes sense for their situations: Pros of a Balance Transfer: Take advantage of lower interest rates — Some balance transfer offers come with a low introductory or zero-percent interest rate. With this low rate, you’ll have the opportunity to make a noticeable dent in your balance and pay it off quicker, rather than just paying down the interest. Yet keep in mind, this strategy only makes senses if you can pay off the balance before that introductory rate expires. Consolidate debt — Do you have multiple balances on different cards to keep track of? Make your job easier by consolidating debt onto one credit card with the lowest interest rate — and have just one balance to pay off. Cons of a Balance Transfer: The costs may outweigh benefits – Some balance transfer cards are associated with hefty fees. Also, note that not every-

one qualifies for a promotional interest rate and, even so, these low rates often come with a time limit before interest spikes — you could be left with a higher interest rate than what you started with. If the associated fee or the resulting interest rate is more than your overall balance, then it’s not worth it. Your credit score might take a hit — If you open a new card for the balance transfer, your credit

score will likely dip, but you can recover if you focus on paying off the balance quickly. Alternatively, if you close a card following a transfer, the increase in credit utilization will likely cause your score to decrease as well. In that case, you may be better off cutting the card and ceasing use rather than closing the account. “No matter the route you chose, it’s important to stop spending on both credit cards. If

a lifelong career in banking. While working there, he met his future wife, Anne Francoeur. With a large merger in 1989, Ken transferred to Bank of Boston’s Boston office, where he managed the marketing for all New England branches of the bank. After briefly leaving banking in 1994, he joined Kennebunk Savings Bank in 1995, serving as Vice President for retail banking. He and Anne had a wonderful marriage spanning fortynine years that was full of love, joy and the usual occasional bumps in the road that strengthen a marriage. Ken was a good family man. He was very proud of his two children, David and Kelly. He enjoyed spending time with his four grandchildren, sonin-law and daughter-in-law. The woods called him during hunting season, to fish the streams and rivers in the spring and skiing in the winter. He enjoyed mowing his lawn, tending to his gardens and watching the Patriots. He appreciated the many friendships he made during his career and always looked forward to his quarterly luncheons with his Casco Bank buddies. Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Oreo was left behind by her previous owners. They piled all their furniture into a truck and drove off, leaving her abandoned in the driveway. Neighbors took her in but she was terrified of all the other cats and the strange new environment. Immobilized with fear, she hid. This big change was just too much for poor Oreo and the family called Safe Haven. Oreo was given her own space at our adoption center and eventually she was matched with cats who did not intimidate her. She is slowly gaining confidence, but her trust has been shaken due to abandonment.

~ News & Classifieds ~ Permanent Reauthorization of LWCF Signed into Law WASHINGTON, D.C. This President recently signed into law a permanent reauthorization of the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) as part of a public lands legislative package. The legislation previously passed the Senate and the House by overwhelming bipartisan majorities. U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME) have long championed LWCF. In January, they joined a bipartisan group in reintroduc-

ing legislation to permanently reauthorize the program. “I have long supported LWCF, which has helped to ensure that everyone can enjoy the beauty of natural resources in Maine and across the country. I am delighted that this permanent reauthorization will secure the future of our country’s most important and successful conservation program, which will create the stability that landowners, states, local communities, and conservation partners need

to plan ahead, said Senator Collins. “The broad, bipartisan support LWCF received reflects the outdoor recreation opportunities this program has created in every county in every state. “The Land and Water Conservation Fund isn’t a partisan or a political issue – it’s an overwhelmingly popular program that has preserved public lands and supported outdoor recreation programs for the last half century – but never had a permanent funding source to make it

age for all occupations. As the number of households with pets and spending on pets continue to rise, there is expected to be increasing demand for veterinary technologists and technicians to perform laboratory work and imaging services on household pets. Some career opportunities available to Licensed Veterinary Technicians include: Small Animal Medicine, Equine Medicine, Food Animal Medicine, Zoo/Wildlife Medicine, Emergency/Referral/Specialty Medi-

cine, Lab Animal Medicine (research), Regulatory Medicine (protect well-being of animals), Veterinary Practice Management, Veterinary Product Marketing and Sales, Animal Nutrition and Humane work or Shelter Medicine. York County Community College provides academic, career, and transfer programs while serving to advance cultural, economic, and workforce development in York County and the State of Maine. For more information, visit www.yccc.edu.

...VETS from page 28 Medical Center, we are able to provide educational opportunities in Veterinary Technology to Maine people statewide, said UMA Professor Jennifer Freese. “Students in southern Maine can complete the first two year of their education close to home. Veterinary Technology positions are in demand within the state of Maine. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, “Employment of veterinary technologists and technicians is projected to grow 20 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the aver-

a lasting treasure, said Senator King. “For 50 years, the LWCF has helped Americans across the country connect with our nation’s natural beauty, and thanks to this permanent reauthorization, we can be certain that it will never again be put in jeopardy due to unrelated debates. This is good news for the American people, who will now be able to reap the benefits of LWCF’s work and enjoy our public lands for generations to come. In Maine, the reauthorization of LWCF is supported by L.L. Bean, Chimani, Natural Resources Council of Maine, The Nature Conservancy in Maine, Maine Conservation Voters, Appalachian Mountain Club Maine Chapter, and the Maine State Chamber of Commerce. The LWCF was established by Congress in 1965 to ensure access to outdoor spaces for present and future generations, and to provide money to federal agencies and state and local governments to purchase land, water, and wetlands for the benefit of all Americans. The LWCF has supported more than 42,000 state and local projects in communities across the country.

SPORTS Coach and Team Recognized by WOCSD

WELLS On March 6, the Wells-Ogunquit CSD School Committee recognized the Wells Warriors Wrestling team and coaches for a very successful season which ended with their third consecutive State Class B championship win. This past season the team scored 18 wins and three losses. On their quest for the state title,

the team first became MidState League Champs and then Southern Maine Class B Regional Champions. In addition, Head Coach Scott Lewia was acknowledged for being named “Coach of the Year” for the third time in four years by the Mid-State Wrestling League. Coach Lewia was also recognized for receiving “The Torch Award” for his role

Kennebunk Parks & Recreation Offering Over-50 Coed Softball

in the team’s raising of over $30,000 in support of Spencer Smith, son of WHS alumnus, Nate Smith, whom Lewia had coached. Lewia was one of only four recipients globally presented with a Torch Award by the Sanofi Genzyme Corporation, a specialty care unit of Sanofi, a multi-national pharmaceutical company based in Paris.

Knighthawks Hockey Honors Spirit of Sportsmanship ELIOT Knighthawks Middle School Hockey has created a new award that honors the player on each team who best exemplifies the true spirit of sportsmanship. A plaque will be hung at the Rochester Ice Arena, which will

list the team-voted player who best represents overall sportsmanship. A team member will be chosen each year from both the A team and the B team. A banquet will be held on March 31 at the Kittery Community Center, 120 Rogers

Road, Kittery, 12-2 p.m. All are welcome to attend. A brief discussion of sign-up protocol will follow for any child interested in participating in the program. Children are allowed to start as early as 5th grade. If interested, email msknighthawkshockey@

KENNEBUNK This summer, softball fans over the age of 50 need to look no further than Kennebunk’s Parks & Recreation Department.
