Local Grad Student Grabs National Architecture Award By Timothy Gillis YORK Modern architecture is combining with the medical field to help make health facilities more patient-friendly. Alyssa Garvey, a graduate student at Endicott College, is studying interior architecture, but she majored in psychology and art therapy at University of New England as an undergrad. The occupational shift, she said, came from her employment experience at Durgin Pines in Kittery. “While I was a social worker, it gave me an idea about how I can impact these people’s lives in a different way, through design,” said Garvey, who stum-

Her ideas have made an immediate impact. She was recently announced as the winner
of a national award from the Interior Design Educators Council which wanted designs that empowered users to grow intellectually, spiritually, mentally, or metaphysically. Purposefully broad and open ended, the project program asked entrants to define the specific use of the design and to develop an atmospheric intervention. The purpose could be a religious practice (traditional or emerging), a secular space of reflection or mindfulness, and/or places for public commemoration. Garvey landed first place with a concept that “incorpoSee GARVEY page 14...

The company has been accused of unethically taking information from Facebook users in order to gain insight into voting behavior. The CEO of the company, Alexander Nix, was suspended after being caught in an undercover journalism sting, bragging about influencing the
election and the possible use of “honey pots” to put politicians in compromising situations and make them susceptible to bribery and extortion. As the news continues to unfold about what data was compromised and who is responsible, a tech attorney offers some tips for keeping you and your info safe in the meantime. Marcus Harris, technology attorney for Taft Stettinius & Hollister, says, “Cambridge Analytica acquired information about Facebook users without

Former Harbormaster Nets Clues to Mystery Woman
By Timothy Gillis OGUNQUIT Bruce Robertson-Dick has soaked up a lot of maritime tales in his days on the sea. His great grandfather sailed the English channel. His grandfather and father were professional mariners. And he was harbormaster in Ogunquit, fished commercially the gulfs of St. Lawrence and Maine, as well as the Georges Bank and the Caribbean. So it should come as no surprise that he is able to offer new clues to the story of the “Long Lost Mother we wrote earlier this month (March 2, 2018). In that story, we learned of John Platt, who was adopted in Montreal in 1958 and, after years of searching for his birth family,
was recently reunited with two half-sisters on his father’s side. His father chartered a sailing ship out of Perkins Cove in the 1950s, and may have met Platt’s mother in Ogunquit as well, although the identity of his mother remains a mystery. John Platt’s hospital re-

cords suggest that his mother may have been 23 years old (i.e. born in 1935) and that she was born in Canada. Robertson-Dick remembers Jonathan Lambert, the father of John Platt, who contacted The Weekly Sentinel for help in finding his biological mother. John and his wife Clare already knew that Lambert spent the summer months chartering a sailing ship out of Perkins Cove. John’s sisters think it is most likely that their father would have met John’s mother, and a relative thought that Jon Lambert had dated a woman with the surname of Francis in 195657. It would seem possible that a French-Canadian woman, who was vacationing in the Ogunquit area, met Jon Lambert, got pregnant, and then went back to Montreal to have the baby. Robertson-Dick confirmed parts of the story, and also offered a few other tidbits.

York among 13 Counties to Qualify for Storm Aid
YORK COUNTY Sen. Dawn Hill, D-York, is reminding municipalities that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently opened an application to aid disaster relief caused by the major storm last fall. This opportunity is open to all municipalities in the 13 counties FEMA has approved for federal financial assistance. York County is one of those qualifying for public assistance. “Last year’s storm caused a
lot of damage, said Sen. Hill. “I encourage the towns in District 35 to reach out and make use of these grants rather than place an additional burden on local taxpayers. If the municipality’s application is accepted, this grant can cover up to 75 percent of repair costs to public infrastructure like roads, bridges or town offices. Damage from the storm last year still remains in the designated counties. This storm recovery

Harris said. “I would warn Facebook users to be very careful about anything they do on Facebook, whether it’s ‘liking’ a T-shirt page, completing a “Which Friends’ Character Are You? quiz, or even participating in a friend’s poll about your favorite band. This might sound paranoid, but the reality is that every single thing you are doing on Facebook is being watched and monetized. ~ News ~ High Schoolers Join in the HYPE
SOUTH BERWICK & NEW HAMPSHIRE Several Marshwood High School students participated in the 2018 Hosting Young Philosophy Enthusiasts (or HYPE) conference last week at the University of New Hampshire. Ruby Albers,
Stella D’Aran, Melanie Dube, Emily Entz, Michaela Flanders, Emry Greene, Morgan Hasty, Carolyn Hoerth, Stephen Kaplan, Nathan Kiesman, Nicholas Lillis, Noble Mushtak, John Riccardi, Alaina Smith, Matt White, and Tate Whitesell.
This conference consisted of keynote speakers and interactive sessions. The keynote speakers were David Wood and Andrea Bruce, both noted photojournalists with experience documenting the struggles of emerging democracies in the Middle East and Africa. After
the keynote addresses, the students spent most of the day in a Socratic seminar-style discussion surrounding the essential question of the day, “What does democracy look like? These sessions were led by student facilitators from the HYPE leadership schools. Each
group consisted of between four to eight students who came from various schools around New England. In all, more than 800 students were in attendance. They learned much from this experience and hope to share much of what was gained with their classmates at MHS.

father was an Episcopalian minister; and that Jon became involved in a relationship with a young, local woman that caused quite a stir. “The woman was Nancy Littlefield (approximately 18 years old at the time). She became pregnant and had a daughter, Robertson-Dick said. This could well be John Platt’s mother, but we have yet to confirm it. He also knew two of the men from Lambert’s crew: Richard Coote (of Harvard) and Col. Bruce Martin. We shared the news with the Platts in England, who are still actively searching for John’s mother. They took the revelation, and upon more research, dis-
covered that “Col. Bruce Martin died in February of this year – just found his obituary, Clare wrote in an email. “This is really interesting as it confirms a story that John’s sisters had heard about a daughter being born. The romance which resulted in John’s birth would have been the late summer of 1957. She shared the information they found on a Richard Coote, who was born circa 1933, attended Kingswood-Oxford High School, in West Hartford, CT, and then Harvard, where he participated in sailing. The search continues, but thanks to the vault-like memory of Robertson-Dick, solid strides have been made to find this long lost mother.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ SOUTH BERWICK The arts bring the opportunity to explore a new culture, a new time period, and a new place, and the cast of Marshwood High School’s production of “Brigadoon has been doing just that as they explore Scotland in 1746. Tommy Albright and Jeff Douglas, New Yorkers on a Scottish hunting trip, get lost in the woods and come upon the magical village of Brigadoon. Rising out of the Scottish mist only once every 100 years, and only for one day, Brigadoon is an enchanted place where life is simpler and easier, untouched by the worries of the modern
world. When Tommy falls for beautiful villager Fiona MacLaren, he must decide whether to stay or to return to his life. Two summers ago, director Tanya West had the amazing opportunity to study Celtic music and dance at the University of Limerick in Ireland. It was a summer intensive program where she found herself completely immersed in a new culture and an art form full of tradition. Celtic music and dance has a rich foundation in story-telling and folklore, family, and tradition. She discovered that the performing arts has a strong place and important role in Celtic life.

In her travels through the countries where Celtic culture is most alive – Ireland, Scotland and Wales – West was struck by the sense of community the arts creates as a living, breathing tradition. “It’s impossible for your imagination not to run wild when listening to music in an Irish pub, exploring castle ruins in Ireland, wandering village streets in Wales, dancing at a Scottish ceilidh, or riding in a horse-drawn wagon through a forest which our driver assured us was enchanted with fairies, she said. She saw that the locals are utterly in love with their culture and adore sharing it. “It has been such a pleasure revisiting that magic through “Brigadoon. It has been wonderful to bring the Celtic influence and Scottish traditions to my students through this theatrical experience, she added. In the craziness of the everyday, modern world, don’t miss your chance to escape into this enchanting fairy tale set in a magical place. As one character says, “There must be an awful lot of folk searching for a Brigadoon - even if it only lasts for a couple of hours. community in support of Waban to raise $95,562. It was a St. Patrick’s Day celebration with donors, volunteers, visitors and entertainers gathering to kick off activities at 10 a.m. The Returnables band opened the Telethon with some upbeat rock ‘n roll on the stage. Guests and viewers enjoyed the children from Fraser-Ford Child Development Center as they performed an adorable rendition of Old MacDonald’s Farm, complete with costumes and pictures. Ben Guillemette and his band of fiddlers gave the Irish flavor needed for the day, and musical groups, To Be Determined, Brian Wardwell, Pretty Girls Sing Soprano, Joe Sailor, Long Road Home and MECA kept everyone entertained throughout the afternoon. Dancers from Steppin’ Out Dance Centre and Northern Explosion Dance Studio added sparkle and energy with over 80 dancers performing jazz, hip hop, lyrical and clogging routines. Waban staff members Libby Ricker and Bonnie Leslie received the Waban Making a Difference Award for their committed and passionate service to Waban. In the community category, the Waban Making a Difference Award was given to the City of Sanford and graciously

accepted by Tom Cote, Mayor of Sanford. Mayor Cote expressed thanks to Waban in conjunction with the city’s 250th anniversary celebration and stated that, “The City of Sanford should be giving Waban an award for all the great work that Waban does for the children and adults of our community. The Telethon was produced by Cremmen Creative and broadcast over Metrocast, simulcast by The Legends radio 1220 AM and 102.3 FM and live streamed via a link on Waban’s webpage. The phone bank was provided by TPx Communica-
tions and staffed by volunteers from Southern Maine Health Care, SIS Bank, Kennebunk Savings and the Altrusa Club. This year’s hosts were long-time volunteers RJ and Jim Legere, Kim LaChance from SMHC, and Waban’s Melissa Hall joining Neal Meltzer and Gervaise Flynn, Waban’s executive and deputy directors. Through the 47 years of its existence, Waban’s Annual Telethon has raised a total of $2,511,125, which has benefitted the children’s programs of Waban with critical services and programs. ...GARVEY from page 1 rates psychology and the interior spaces, and how you incorporate those spaces to impact people positively,” she said about her submission, one of 155 from the region. Her work won $700 and a chance to display it at the 2018 IDEC Annual Conference earlier this month in Boston. It was recognized at the 2018 President’s Dinner.
The award-winning concept was “a take off of an art installation I would love to do sometime,” she said. “It is realistic, but I rendered it through the Revit program, with photos of the concept.” Garvey creates art, especially using mirrors for the back of pressed flowers, some examples of which can be seen at her website, www.pressed byag.com. “I use a mirror for the back
of pressed flowers for a three-D quality, and then I put glass on top and frame it,” she said. “When they called for a spiritual place, I was really looking into how to transform space by using infinity mirrors. On three walls, there are these infinity mirrors with pressed flowers, as you ambulate around the space it offers silence and contemplation. It brings you from being out in the world, a place that is over stimulating, to a place that is calm and
reassuring but also stimulating.” Visitors to the virtual health center would exit the place to an actual field of flowers; the three-wall effect is an infinity of mirrors and then a fourth wall, an actual wall of flowers. Garvey said the combination of design and health is a natural progression. “I see it now with hospitals hiring designers. There are entire design firms that do just interiors.”

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, Thank you for all your help over the years. This is not a computer question per se. Why do so many sites, including Yahoo and Facebook, have completely false information on the side of the site? For example, there are reports of deaths of celebrities, including movie stars and sports figures, that show up for several days on the side of the site. And there are reports that are completely untrue, that someone in the sports world has been suspended for life. The suspension never occurred. These are blatant examples of fake news. I have reported this to Facebook but never received a response. Thank you. Robert in CA Dear Robert, You are talking about advertisements called, clickbait. Clickbait is purposely provocative and/or misleading in an effort to get users to click on it. Once the user has clicked on the clickbait, they are disappointed to find that the story is not really what it seemed, or all they see is a page full of ads with no story. Clickbait often generates income based on the number of clicks or the number of page
views generated from the clicks. In addition, Facebook and other companies that are displaying the ads also make money when you click on them. If you and I don’t click on the clickbait links, no one will make money with them, and eventually they will stop displaying them. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been a subscriber for several years, and have learned a lot from you. This is the first time I am submitting a question. I have a Lenovo ideapad 110S, with Windows 10. I use Firefox as my browser, and have uBlock Origin as my ad blocker. I have been entering sweepstakes at a particular website for several years, with the ad blocker on. Recently, a popup appeared, telling me it appears that I am using an ad blocker, and to please turn it off, since they provide their content for free, etc. With the ad blocker on, I can submit about 6 entries per minute. With the ad blocker off, the ads slow down the computer, so that it takes up to two minutes to submit one entry. Quite a difference! I resent the waste of my time, and I don’t have time

to enter all the giveaways under these conditions. Is there any way I can use the ad blocker without the other party detecting it? Or, is there another ad blocker I can use that they can’t detect? I also don’t think they should have the right to prevent me from accessing their website if I’m using an ad blocker. Thanks for any help you can give, Rose Dear Rose, If you think of every website on the internet as a place of business, kind of like a small shop, it might help. The reason this particular sweepstakes website was created is so that the owner can pay his or her bills. They offer a service to you (a convenient place to enter multiple sweepstakes) and instead of charging you for this service, they get paid by displaying ads. I know that some game sites (like pogo) offer a paid subscription to their site that removes the ads, perhaps the site you are using has an option like that. I don’t have much experience with ad blocking software, so I can’t help with that part of your question. Perhaps other readers will be able to help you in the comments section below. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady,
I have an HP desktop (windows 7) and a HP tablet that both run Gmail. When I delete an entry on the desktop it doesn’t delete the same one on my tablet. Can this be done? Thanks, Ron Dear Ron, Yes, this can be done. In fact, I’m surprised that it is not already being done. Gmail is a web based email program, you can access it from any internet- connected device from your computer to your phone. Normally, when you delete a message from any device, it is removed from your Gmail account on their server, which means that it is removed from all devices. The fact that your emails are not automatically synced means that one of your devices is using POP to download messages and not either direct access or IMAP. If you are using an email program on your desktop, try switching to direct access (https://mail.google.com) If you are using the email app on your tablet, try either direct access, or switch to the gmail app if it is available. If you want to continue to use your email program, you would need to set Gmail up for

IMAP access instead of POP. You might need to get your local computer shop to set this up for you as it is too involved for this column. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I read your newsletter and love it, have learned much from it! I want to know I was running windows 7 and upgraded to windows 10 free. Now I want to know how can I make DVD from installed windows 10 for fresh install windows 10 again. I try to make USB but it did not work properly. Regards, M. Dear M., If you want to do a fresh install of Windows 10 on the same computer, all you have to do is create an install disk using the tool and directions on Microsoft’s website at: https://www.microsoft.com/ en-us/software-download/ windows10. The tool is called the media creation tool, and Microsoft has some pretty good instructions for you to follow as you download first the tool, then the file for the disk. You will not need a product key since Windows 10 will authenticate using a hardware key that is unique to your computer. If you want to create an image of your current setup on your computer complete with files, drivers, and installed programs you will need to get a program like Acronis True Image, which will allow you to make a complete backup of your hard drive, and also create a boot disk that will allow you to start the computer if the hard drive has crashed and restore the computer using the backup you made. When you create this type of backup on a regular basis, you also protect yourself against ransomware. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Ollie is a very sweet loving giant of a boy who is current on all necessary vaccinations and has passed his wellness exam being declared ready to go. Ollie, like all black and white cats’ original ancestry, immigrated from Holland to New Amsterdam some time in the sixteenth century, predating the American Revolution. In that time frame the black and white cat has become a house hold favorite among so many families. This big Dutch boy is looking for an indoor only life
style, (he already knows what the streets had to offer), for his health and longevity. Ollie is also hoping to be an only kitty. He wants to enjoy all the attention that he so richly deserves. If you are the single person or family that thinks that a gentle giant with an impressive ancestral history would make a nice addition to your family circle, please plan a trip to the rescue this Saturday to meet this charmer, Ollie. In addition to our featured pet of the week, we have a small number of kittens, a few teenage kittens and a nice group of young and older adult cats all looking to you for their forever loving family.
Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Holly (pictured) and Rex come to life in the evening. Zoom, thump, bang! Like clockwork, their daily naps end and play time begins! They leap from cat tree to cat tree, race across the room and come to a screeching stop—on top of one another! Less than a year old, these beautiful Maine Coon mixes are sister and brother. Holly has the classic Maine Coon tiger markings, while Rex’s long, shiny black coat is just as beautiful. Until they landed at Safe Haven, these spirited kitties from midcoast Maine had little opportunity for socialization. They’re still a wee bit standoffish around strangers, but confidence simply takes time to develop. They’re healthy and active, and their madcap play is hysterical to watch. Their medical needs are complete so they’re ready to be placed in a loving home together, preferably one with the room for them to run and romp and stretch their long legs. Both will grow to be large. They’re already long and leggy, and as they mature their coats will grow even longer and silkier. Come and visit these beauties! For details, call 207-646-1611. We’re struggling with an influx of people surrendering their older cats with chronic health problems: cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, thyroid problems. Most also have serious
dental decay that must be treated. Because we’re No-Kill and provide optimal vet care to each kitty, our budget is really getting squeezed. We need some additional financial support from our friends. All these chronically ill senior kitties enjoy a happy life at our adoption center, with volunteers who dote on them, play with them, and feed them the best quality food. The kitties are happy and comfortable, and deserve to live out their lives enjoying love, care and respect. Some also need intravenous fluids or insulin shots. This puts additional strain on a small, tired team of unpaid volunteers. We’re happy to give the extra care, but our vet care budget is limited.

Please consider making an additional donation to provide for the growing number of senior cats needing expensive vet care. You can donate with a credit card on our website, or mail a check to Safe Haven, PO Box 91, Wells, ME 04090. We appreciate your help! Our Thrift Shop in the Wells IGA Plaza needs donations of quality household items, home dÊcor, jewelry, vinyl records, small furnishings, lamps, small kitchen appliances, pots, pans and linens. Please, only items in good condition. For clothing, please bring only spring-summer clothing, as we have no space to store off-season items. We also need large strong shopping bags, bubble wrap, trash bags and newsprint. The less we have to purchase, the more we have for our kitties’ care. Open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon-Sun. For details, call 207229-8314. Our shelter, open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, always needs large litter boxes (the uncovered kind), scoopable cat litter, canned Friskies cat food (pref chicken flavor with gravy) and Temptations treats. Thanks!
KENNEBUNK Valentine is a sweet girl who tends to act her age. At 9 years old, she doesn’t bound around too much, preferring to find comfy spots to relax and/ or nap in. She would do best at the only cat in a new home, as well as being an indoor/outdoor cat, as she sometimes enjoys her independence. Valentine unfortunately does not always use her litter box properly, something which our adoption counselors will be happy to go over with potential adopters in detail. She does have a heart full of love that she is ready to share with her new family. Open up your heart and your home to this sweetheart of a cat today. You won’t be sorry you took a chance on her. Valentine’s adoption fee is only $10. She is also a Doris Day Animal Foundation senior. Through generous funding from the DDA to support senior cats, we are able to offer Valentine’s adopters up to $100 in post-adoption support for qualified non-routine veterinary care,
such as dental care, surgery, diagnostics, and certain prescription medications. More information is available at the adoption center. Stop by AWS’ Adoption Center at 46 Holland Road in Kennebunk or give us a call at 207-985-3244 to learn more about adopting sweet Valentine!

Town Joins AARP as Age-Friendly Community OGUNQUIT With the recent additions of Waldo County, Caribou, and Ogunquit, AARP Maine announced that a total of 50 communities in the state have joined the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities. Maine continues to lead the nation in the number of towns, large and small, that are making a difference in the lives of residents of all ages through creative and cooperative accomplishments. “We are thrilled that a record-breaking number of Maine communities are committed to advancing agefriendly initiatives that encourage residents to remain active and socially engaged,” stated Lori Parham, AARP director of Maine. “The AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities helps participating communities become great places for all ages by adopting features such as safe, walkable streets, better housing and transportation options, access to key services, and opportunities for residents to participate in community activities. Maine’s dedication to well-
designed, livable communities that promote health and sustain economic growth is truly inspiring.” The momentum to embrace a livable community concept continues to grow in 2018. In 2017, Maine saw a remarkable surge in the efforts of towns and neighborhoods to advance age-friendly initiatives. Maine has consistently led the country in the number of NAFC participants in large part due to the effective collaborations of the town, businesses, residents and local non-profits. “Cities and towns across Maine are embracing agefriendly planning, using the structure provided by the Network of Age-Friendly Communities to create places where age itself is not a barrier to being as active in community life as people want to be,” said Patricia Oh, consultant for AARP Maine. “We have a vibrant older population in Maine. Cities and towns of all sizes—from Portland to Caribou—are tapping into the economic, civic, and social power of their residents 50+ to make the community a better place for everyone—from

toddlers to centenarians.” In addition, AARP is now accepting applications for the 2018 Community Challenge grant program to fund “quickaction” projects that spark change in local communities. The grant program, which is now in its second year, is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities initiative, which aims to make communities great places to live for everyone. The Community Challenge is open to 501(c)(3), 501(c) (4) and 501(c)(6) nonprofits and government entities and other types of organizations will be
considered on a case-by-case basis. Projects may range in scale from small, short-term activities costing hundreds of dollars to larger projects with budgets of a few thousand dollars. The program will accept applications in the following categories for 2018: • Delivering a range of transportation and connectivity options in the community through permanent or temporary solutions that increase walkability, bikeability, wayfinding, access to transportation options and roadway improvements
• Creating vibrant public places in the community through permanent or temporary solutions that activate open spaces, improve parks and improve access to amenities • Supporting the availability of a range of housing in the community through permanent or temporary solutions that increase accessible and affordable housing options • Other innovative projects to improve the community For a complete list of participating communities in the NAFC in Maine and across the country, go to www.aarp.org.

Health & Fitness Industry Innovator Delivers Address OGUNQUIT Donato Tramuto, CEO of Tivity Health Inc., a longtime Ogunquit resident and small business owner, and president and founder of the not-for-profit organization, Health eVillages, will deliver the keynote address at Lasell College’s 164th Commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 12, of this year. Tramuto is an innovator and industry leader with more than 35 years of experience in healthcare, which includes improving medication safety, expanding digital access, and developing health improvement and fitness programs to promote healthier aging. He is recognized for his commitment to the integration of digital technology to improve global healthcare access. In less than a year as CEO of Tivity Health Inc., Tramuto executed a turnaround in the company’s performance, adding more than $1 billion of valuation to the company. “Tramuto’s decades-long commitment to the healthcare industry and social change makes him an ideal candidate to address our students at this critical time when national conversations around access to
healthcare dominate the news,â€? said Lasell president Michael B. Alexander, noting Lasell’s programs in athletic training, exercise science and health science. “We are honored to have him on campus where he will meet with many of our students who are preparing to enter the burgeoning and evolving healthcare industry.â€? Tramuto founded Health eVillages in 2011, with projects in Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Haiti and the United States. Today, the nonprofit currently provides 400 stateof-the-art mobile tablets to 18 global and domestic communities with challenging clinical environments. Through these tablets, which feature medical, nursing, and public health applications and content tailored to the unique needs of each community, users can view medical resources and support tools without internet access. Kerry Kennedy, president of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, describes eVillages as “transformativeâ€? and as â€œâ€Ś a medical library in a portable package.â€? In 2014, the organization bestowed Tramuto with the RFK Ripple of Hope award for his charitable work in the healthcare field.

NATIONAL The National Multiple Sclerosis Society honored U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a member of the Congressional MS Caucus, with the 2017 U.S. Senator of the Year Award. Senator Collins was recognized for her leadership in ensuring that individuals with MS maintain access to quality, affordable health care coverage; her work to preserve the medical expense deduction; and her advocacy on behalf of family caregivers. Cyndi Zagieboylo, president and CEO of the National MS Society, and Emily Rude, a registered nurse in Portland, presented Senator Collins with the award. “I am honored to receive this recognition from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, said the senator. “Promising scientific advancements and
enlightened public policy are leading to breakthroughs in our fight against MS. I am proud to help lead efforts in Congress to increase funding for biomedical research and support those who are fighting this disease. Senator Collins is a strong advocate for those living with MS. Earlier this year, the Recognize, Assist, Include, Support, and Engage Family Caregivers Act she authored was signed into law. ~ Where To Dine ~
Lamb: A Favorite Meal At Springtime Holiday Dinner Tables Versatile and flavorful, lamb is enjoyed across the globe and is especially popular come springtime holidays. Throughout the Middle East and parts of Eastern Europe, lamb has traditionally been enjoyed once the weather warms and the season of fertility renews. Christians, who refer to Jesus Christ as the “Lamb of God pay homage to the Easter miracle and often dine on lamb as part of their celebrations. Depending on how they interpret Jewish law, Jews may or may not include lamb at their traditional Passover seder. Lamb is a tender and tasty meat that can be prepared in various ways. Lamb can be roasted, braised,
stewed, broiled, and even grilled. To prepare lamb well, it is extremely important to follow safety guidelines concerning food cross-contamination. Undercooked and raw meats may contain E. coli bacteria; therefore, lamb should not come in contact with other foods that will be served uncooked. Many cuts of lamb are very tender so they will not require long marinating times to help break down the fibers in the meat. Lamb does not need a lot of prep time. In fact, a simple seasoning of herbs, garlic or a spice rub will provide substantial flavor. According to The Daily Meal, New Zealand or Australian lamb has a milder flavor than domestic lamb. Over-seasoning can

overwhelm the delicate flavor of the lamb in these cases. While preferences differ, many chefs attest that a bonein cut of lamb will be more flavorful. However, boneless cuts are easier to carve. Similarly, cooks have strong opinions on the doneness of lamb, with some prefering rare meat while others like theirs well-done. Lamb can be juicy and tender at a wide range of cooking temperatures, so home chefs can decide how they want to prepare their lamb. The average temperature for roasting lamb to medium doneness will fall between 135 to 145 F, with the USDA recommending at least 145 F as the desired temperature. Lamb roasts at a rate of 20 minutes per pound at a cooking temperature of 325 F.
Use a thermometer to accurately measure the internal temperature of lamb. Remove the lamb when it is roughly five degrees below the desired temperature, as the meat will continue to cook even after it is removed from the oven, skillet or grill. After cooking. let the lamb rest for around 10 minutes for thinner cuts and 20 minutes for roasts or leg of lamb to allow the juices to redistribute. Certain flavors pair especially well with lamb, including citrus, mint, garlic, oregano, and curry. Lamb can be served beside potatoes, couscous, polen-

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Score ham by making 1/2-inch deep diagonal cuts, creating a diamond pattern; transfer ham to a roasting pan. Mix brown sugar with enough yellow mustard to make a smooth, pourable sauce.
Pour reserved pineapple juice over ham, followed by the honey. Pour brown sugar mixture over honey and arrange pineapple rings decoratively atop ham. Secure pineapple rings with toothpicks. Bake in the preheated oven until diamond pattern on ham splits open, 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Baste ham every 15 minutes with pan drippings. Recipe by Alison Skaff Straub

GREAT HIDDEN BREAKFAST! This truly is a great place. Service was great, all the staff there are so nice you really feel welcomed. Food was very good, they have a great selection. My wife had the lobster benedict, she said it was so good. I had the corned beef hash, unbelievable great flavor. Inside it is so cozy, nice, warm atmosphere. Prices are very reasonable, and the quality is of the highest you can get. ~ Danvers, MA

Over the next two decades he created innovative, state of the art Audio Visual presentations for ad agencies and corporations in Boston. The deadline for this year’s contest is Friday, May 11, 2018. In the past 13 years, the Law Offices of Joe Bornstein has given away over $120,000 in prizes to graduating high school seniors to help promote safe driving practices. A complete set of rules and all past winning entries can be viewed online at: www.arrivealivecreativecontest.com or on Facebook.
...JOBS from page 16 designing equipment and evaluating the adaptability of materials. • Pilot: Navigating, calculating wind speeds and fuel ration and much more are involved in piloting an aircraft. Math skills can be life-saving when pilots have to make adjustments and calculations thousands of feet in the air. • Sports broadcaster: Math is involved in many aspects of sports. Sports broadcasters often must add up statistics on the fly and proficiency in math makes that easier. • Astronomer: Observing, researching and interpreting astronomical phenomena requires a strong understanding of mathematics. • Insurance underwriter:
Underwriters rely on math to assess risk as they make recommendations to insurance companies before such companies will issue policies. • Financial planner: Financial planners help businesses and individuals map out the ways to grow their money so they can secure their financial futures. • Actuary: Actuaries measure risk and uncertainty as they evaluate the liklihood of future events occurring as they apply to certain areas, including insurance and pension programs. Strong math skills can provide an entryway into a lucrative and stable career. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.
6 Reasons To Buy And Wear A School Class Ring Come spring, many students are preparing for graduation. Among the decisions soon-to-be-graduates have to make in the months leading up to graduation day is whether or not to invest in a class ring as a memento of their time in school. Class rings are one of the more enduring symbols of academia. The following are reasons why those about to don their caps and gowns may want to invest in class rings. 1. Rings symbolize hard work. Graduates can think about the hours they spent toiling for great grades or the experiences they made participating in extracurricular sports teams and clubs. A ring is a tangible reminder of those accomplishments and experiences. 2. Rings can provide a way
to connect with other graduates. A class ring can be an easy networking tool. When another alumna spots a person wearing a class ring, it can be an easy way to break the ice. It may even help a person get a foot in the door for a new job. 3. Rings can be an ideal gift. Class rings can be expensive. According to the class ring company WearMyStory, rings may range from $200 to $2,000, depending on the metal and embellishments chosen. For the graduate who has everything, a class ring can be a symbolic and generous gift. 4. Rings are a long-lasting keepsake. School rings can last decades. Many people hold on to jewelry and pass it down to future generations. Should another family member decide to
go to the same school in the years to come, the ring can be gifted to that person. 5. Class rings can be customized. Today’s class rings come in a wide variety of styles, sizes and shapes. Students get to choose the stone color, engraving, accents, and much more as a way of self-expression. 6. Rings are traditional. A class ring is just one of many rites of passage for young adults. School days are fleeting, but a ring is an enduring symbol of times spent in the classroom. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.

Local Realtor Completes Coursework
Marina Welcomes Operations Manager KENNEBUNKPORT Shawn Dumas has been hired as operations manager at Kennebunkport Marina, where he will help the marina prepare and plan for future growth and expansion. “I have always had the utmost respect for the needs of customers. They are relying on us, as their boat servicer, to keep their friends and family safe when they go out on the water,” said Dumas. “I take that responsibility to heart and enjoy building stalwart teams that support that mission.” Dumas has worked in the marine industry in Southern Maine since the early 1980s’s. Learning from the ground up, he started as a yard worker at a family shop in Arundel, then became a certified master technician. After transferring to Yankee Marina, he gained significant experience working with marine engines and complex vessel systems from small boats to sixty-foot yachts. In 2004, Dumas was hired on as an outboard technician at Yar-
mouth boat yard. Over the next 14 years, he grew through the ranks, learning all aspects of the business from sales and parts to service, and eventually became the general manager. His expertise and understanding of customer needs coupled with his knowledge of boats and engines helped the company sustain significant growth. “We are thrilled to be bringing Shawn aboard,” said owner Michael Shea. “His keen
insight and broad industry experience will provide strong guidance in evolving our operations. Together with Cathy Norton, marina manager, and Gary Mulsow, yard supervisor, this skilled management team will work to upgrade current marina amenities and expand and enhance service offerings.” Additional staff is expected to be brought on in the near future to help facilitate this growth.
Real Estate Company Expands YORK Williams Realty Partners announced that realtor Mike Milliard has recently joined their team. “As WRP continues to expand into the New Hampshire market, we are happy to bring someone onto the team who has an affinity for the area and a love of houses and real estate. We’ve been looking for someone with Mike’s enthusiasm and unique qualifications and I’m confident he will work hard for his clients,”
YORK Abigail Douris with Re/ Max Realty One has received the Accredited Buyer’s Representative designation by the Real Estate Buyer’s Agent Council of the National Association of Realtors. Douris joins more that 25,000 real estate professionals across the globe who have earned the designation. All were required to successfully complete a comprehensive educational curriculum in addition to verification of qualified professional experience. REBAC, founded in 1988, is an association of real
estate professionals focusing specifically on representing the real estate buyer.
said Troy Williams, owner. Milliard grew up in a small town in Connecticut and spent his summers vacationing in Hampton Beach, NH, at his family’s cottage. He earned a degree in Business Administration from Virginia Tech, but has always loved real estate. During thirteen years working at Lowes, he met many terrific people, both employees and customers and
developed professionally in customer service. To indulge his love of houses, Milliard worked on properties, starting with building custom cabinets and additions, then remodeling, and eventually did complete renovations with a craftsman in Eliot. He met his wife, Tamara, also a realtor at WRP, during one of those jobs. Their mutual love of property led them into investing and flipping.

He will sing baseball songs, offer up baseball trivia, and talk about his days on the Bosox beat. In addition, Newman will hold a free raffle for his two baseball CDs, Baseball’s Greatest Hits, Volumes 1 and 2. Not all of the program will focus on baseball. Newman will also play classic songs from yesteryear, including the music of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and

~ News ~ How To Banish Mosquitoes From Your Yard Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus. The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irrita-
tion through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva. Homeowners can employ several measures to prevent mosquitoes from invading their backyards this spring and summer. • Remove standing water. Stagnant water is an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, so homeowners must be diligent in their efforts to remove standing water around their properties. Mosquitoes can breed in bird baths, pets’ water bowls and empty plant pots that collect rain water. Routinely tipping these items and refilling them with fresh water can prevent mosquito infestations, protecting both humans and pets alike. • Inspect property for hidden pockets of water. While bird baths, pet bowls and kiddie pools are easy to find, homeowners may be unknowingly hosting mosquito breeding grounds elsewhere on their properties. For ex-
ample, tarps used to cover pools, automobiles or grills that are not tightly secured can fold up, creating pockets where rain water can collect and give mosquitoes somewhere to breed. Mosquitoes also may use gutters to breed, so homeowners should routinely inspect and clean their gutters during spring and summer. • Keep a well-manicured lawn. Well-manicured lawns are less likely to be breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Because water plays such a crucial role in the mosquito breeding process, it’s necessary that all potential water sources in a yard be removed. Fallen leaves that are not removed and pockets of soil beneath trees and plants can collect rain water or water from lawn sprinklers, which can be just enough for mosquitoes to breed. • Use fans. Consumer Reports tested the efficacy of oscillating pedestal fans to keep
mosquitoes from invading decks and patios and found that such fans cut mosquito landings by 45 to 65 percent for those sitting closest to the fans. When hosting backyard barbecues, homeowners can set up several such fans on their decks and patios to keep mosquitoes at bay.
Mosquitoes are unwelcome guests come spring and summer. But homeowners can take steps to increase the likelihood that their properties stay mosquito-free. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources.
Maine Boatbuilders Update STATEWIDE You are invited to a discussion at the Maine Boatbuilders Show on March 23, at 4 p.m., about encouraging Mainers of all ages to consider careers in Maine’s maritime and coastal economy. The careers range from boatbuilders and aquaculture workers to kayak guides and marina workers. The event will be at 512 Warren Ave. in Portland. “We hope to draw a cross section of folks from the entire Maine Coast representing the whole range of outreach and training programs as well as potential
employers to brainstorm solutions to this emerging problem,” the press releaser read. Speakers include: Adam Shepard, exec. director of Rippleffect, Portland; Monique Coombs, director of marine programs for the Maine Coast Fishermen’s Association in Brunswick; Jason Curtis, VP of operations at Portland Yacht Services in Portland; Stacey Keefer, exec. director of the Maine Marine Trades Association, Rockland; Ken Sparta, of the Pine Tree Council Boy Scouts of America.
