Grow Your Own Apothecary Garden with Emily Springer SOUTHERN MAINE Learn how to grow a garden of historic plants that can be used to care for yourself and your family with Emily Springer of Meeting House Herb Farm in Scarborough on Wednesday, March 31 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. Emily will present a lecture on how American Colonists used plants for their home apothecaries, and offers tips on how you can establish your own apothecary garden. Emily founded Meeting House Herb Farm, an herb grow-

ers collaborative, in 2017, following a successful 20-year career in financial services. She also leads Infusion Herb Company, an artisan apothecary focused on a plants-first approach to self-care, and empowering women with herbal products and wisdom. Emily holds a degree from The College of William & Mary, and is a life-long student of plants. She shares her knowledge of their many benefits through her herbs, herbal products, workshops, and consulting. The farm and apothecary are located on an

historic property that was once a 1730s outpost, Pony Express stop, and garrison. The Springer family makes their home in an old Meeting House built in 1731, largely still in original condition. This free, virtual program is presented via Zoom with registration required at www.oldyork.org. Registrants will receive an email with the zoom link for the program with registration confirmation through Simpletix, the online ticketing system. There is also an optional $10 soup and bread supper available

for this event where participants can enjoy a bowl of homemade Vegetable and Herb Gypsy Soup (vegan), accompanied by bread from When Pigs Fly Bakery in Kittery. Local contactless pickup 3-5 p.m. only on March 31 at the Old York Museum Center, 3 Lindsay Road. Meals will be packaged, labeled and ready for pick up outside the side door (by the blue stone patio) and meals will need to be reheated at home. For more information, call 207-363-1756 or go to www.oldyork.org.

New Owner of Loco Coco’s Shares Ingredients of Her Success By Jesse Scardina, Staff Writer KITTERY When Jami Scardina started at Loco Coco’s Tacos in Kittery, she never thought she’d one day own the restaurant. Scardina, 44, came on as an assistant manager in 2013, bringing decades of experience to the single location Mexican eatery that had continued to grow in its then nine years in existence. Now more than 16 years serving the seacoast, Loco’s has a new owner. And while Loco’s has deep roots in Kittery as one of the more established restaurants in a

continuously growing “foodie” destination, the new owner’s roots to Maine’s oldest town run much deeper. “One of the best parts of Kittery, besides the location and beauty, is the sense of community,” Scardina said. “People look out for one another and they raise their families here for generations, so to have aa business that sees that embodied every day is amazing.” Scardina, a 1994 graduate of Traip Academy, was the first of four Scardina children to graduate from Traip. Her father, Marco

Extension of State Income Tax Deadline AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced recently that the state of Maine will move the deadline for Maine individual income tax payments from April 15 to May 17. The change aligns with the federal government’s recent extension of the federal tax filing and payment deadline. Additionally, the filing deadline for Maine tax returns, which is distinct from the payment deadline, is automatically tied to the federal date. As a result, the filing deadline for 2020 Maine income tax returns has also been moved to May 17. Like the Inter-

Scardina, spent more than 40 years working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the same place where her brother, Cory, currently works. She has two more brothers: Nick, a local landscaper, and Jesse, who works with his sister at Loco’s. It was the draw of having a family with deep Kittery roots that led original owners, Ramona and Luis Valdez, to sell to Scardina, knowing she would continue to grow the restaurant. “I approached them about

self-employment tax, do not need to file any forms or call to qualify for this deadline extension to May 17. For individuals who file via Form 1040ME (Maine Individual Income Tax Return) for the 2020 tax return, penalties and interest will not be applied for the period from April 16 until May 17. Additionally, the bipartisan supplemental budget enacted by the Legislature and signed into law by Governor Mills allows recipients of unemployment benefits to claim exemption from Maine income tax up to $10,200 for tax year 2020. This applies to those with an annual income of

less than $150,000, regardless of filing status. Qualification criteria and tax forms are available at www.maine.gov/revenue. Lowincome Mainers may call 2-1-1 or visit www.211maine.org for assistance in identifying free tax preparation resources available throughout the state. The federal government’s extension does not apply to corporate returns and payments nor to individual and corporate estimated payments, all of which remain due on April 15. As a result, Maine’s deadlines for corporate and/or estimated filing and payments will also remain April 15. Have you seen our

U.S. Senators Designate Women’s History Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) led a group of 40 Senators – including all 24 women Senators – in introducing a resolution designating March 2021 as “National

Women’s History Month.” The resolution is also co-sponsored by Senator Angus King (I-ME). “Last year, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of American women’s suffrage and finally passed legislation to establish a Smithsonian American Wom-

When I first joined the Senate, there were only two of us. Today, women make up a quarter of the Senate, and this year we finally swore in the first female vice president. This progress has been tremendous, but we can’t stop until we achieve full equality.”

~ News ~ ...LOCO from page 1 throwing my hat into the ring whenever they thought they’d be ready to sell,” Scardina said. “I was surprised when it was something that they were interested in immediately.” While having been manager at Loco’s since 2013, it wasn’t until around early 2019 that Scardina thought about acquiring Loco’s. What was hoping to be a relatively easy transaction was exacerbated by the pandemic, delaying the sale roughly a year. To further the family ties, Scardina partnered with her cousin, Doug Scardina, from New York. The transaction was finalized on Wednesday, February 24, sealed with a shot of tequila at the lawyers office, a “cheers” from past owners to the new ones. Each member of the Scardina family has a role at the restaurant. In addition to Jami owning it and acting as its general manager, Jesse is a bartender and works on marketing and promoting the restaurant; Jami’s mother Tammy works on catering; Jami’s father Marco and brother Cory act as handymen and Nick helps with landscaping and plowing in the winter. “To have it be a family business is the best feeling,” Scardina said, adding that beyond her family-by-blood, another familial aspect has grown out of this acquisition. “It’s both the family I was born into and the family that

we have created with the crew and customers at Loco’s.” Loco’s has seen its share of changes in its 16-plus years serving the seacoast. What started out as a small, takeout-preferred restaurant that shared a building with a boat storage facility, the Mexican restaurant continued to grow into the space, eventually occupying its neighbor and building a dining room and patio, becoming one of the largest restaurants in Kittery. But one change that Loco’s hadn’t experienced was a change in ownership. The goal, according to Scardina, is for those who don’t know that their is new ownership, to not notice any significant changes. There will be cosmetic improvements and repeat customers may notice a new paint job, new flooring and furniture. But as far as what has made Loco’s a favorite spot for families, shipyard workers and other locals — the food and drink and energetic yet family-friendly atmosphere — won’t be changing. “There won’t be any major changes to the menu, except for a few tweaks and a some new specials,” Scardina said. “They can expect to see us embrace the history of the building, which was originally a boat yard, and give new flair and respect to the building.” Scardina added that menu expansions to the bar and more frequent specials will be something customers can look forward

to. Scardina has already added to Loco’s include a “Hot Dog Tuesday,” featuring a variety of Mexican-inspired hot dogs. “With Taco Tuesday being a popular promotion, what do you do when every day could be Taco Tuesday,” Scardina said. “So we decided to deliver a classic American food with a Mexican twist.” Scardina also plans on increasing the restaurant’s outreach to the greater seacoast area, including helping with the Kittery Block Party when it returns in 2022 and building partnerships with local community organizations and nonprofits.

~ News ~ The Joy of Summer-Flowering Bulbs YORK COUNTY The month of March offers the end of winter and the beginning of spring, and it’s the perfect time to begin to plan for summer-flowering plants – including bulbs – for Maine gardens. Summer-flowering bulbs – collectively including corms, rhizomes and tubers – are planted in the spring when soils warm. These jewels, which include crocosmias, dahlias, begonias, gladioli, lilies and others, offer a vast range of color, shape, height and texture to the landscape. They require very little care, and are wonderful companions for annuals and perennials, as well as woody plants. Summer-flowering bulbs are planted in mid to late spring as soon as the danger of frost has passed and the soil temperatures have warmed to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Tender spring-planted bulbs – USDA hardiness zone six and above – will not survive the cold Maine winters; to preserve these bulbs, gardeners must dig them up in

the fall and properly store them over winter. Similar to many other plants, bulbs prefer to grow in loose, well-drained soil that is amended with compost or other organic matter. Correct planting depth of bulbs is important. The general rule of thumb is to plant them three times as deep as the bulb is tall. Light conditions are also important and vary depending on the type of bulb. Begonias, for example, prefer shady conditions whereas dahlias prefer full sun. Summer-flowering bulbs can be planted en masse in a landscape for visual impact or showcased in containers. And they make wonderful additions to border, perennial and rock gardens. The visual beauty that comes from a garden that is artfully planted with summer-flowering bulbs is undeniable. There are thousands of different types to choose from. If you’re looking to plant something out of the ordinary, consider rare and unusual bulbs. It’s such a joy for both novice and discerning gardeners alike to grow bulbs that

have history. There are small specialty nurseries and online companies that offer limited amounts of unusual varieties. And unusual doesn’t necessarily mean hard to grow. In fact, many of the rare heirloom bulbs prosper with minimal care and attention.

Dahlias are a favorite summer-flowering bulb. These showy plants add drama to any garden with their bright colors and playful blooms of varying shapes and sizes. One of the most charming white dahlias to grow is the rare Dahlia ‘White Aster’. This heirloom is considered one of the world’s oldest surviving garden dahlias. First

FINANCE & CAREER Maine Real Estate Sales Up

AUGUSTA High demand for singlefamily existing homes across Maine continues, despite the

yearlong pandemic. Maine Listings released new housing statistics today for the month of February 2021, which indicate a sales

increase of 22.77% compared to February 2020. Home prices rose 12.91% to reach a median sales price (MSP) of $244,900 comparing February 2021 to February 2020. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “The hot pace of residential real estate activity continues, with

statewide days-on-market statistic was 21 days, compared to 52 days for February 2020.” Nationally, sales of singlefamily existing homes in February 2021 increased 8.0% compared to February 2020, and the national MSP rose 16.2% to $317,100 over that same time period. According to the National Association of Realtors, the regional Northeast in February 2021 experienced a sales jump of 13.2%, while the regional MSP increased 20.5% to $356,000 compared to February 2020. “Over the coming year, we’re hopeful for a return to pre-pandemic conditions, with more sellers entering the market which will ease the pent-up demand,” added Bolster. “Our advice to buyers until then is to work with a REALTOR® to learn your market, develop a strategy, and remain committed and patient.”

AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced that Maine is accelerating the timeline of its vaccination plan again to make more people eligible for COVID-19 vaccines earlier. Starting on March 3, residents age 60 and older became eligible for the vaccination; on March 23, residents age 50 and older became eligible; and beginning April 19, all Maine residents age 16 and older will now be eligible for vaccination. The accelerated timeline comes as some Maine vaccine providers are reporting availability of appointments and as Maine anticipates an increase in vaccine supply from the Federal government. As with all changes in eligibility, it will take some time for some vaccine clinics to begin to schedule appoint-

ments and administer COVID19 vaccines. To find a vaccination site, visit the State’s vac-

cine website at www.maine. gov/covid19/vaccines/vaccination-sites.

Go Red for Women Luncheon STATEWIDE The American Heart Association’s 2021 Go Red for Women® Luncheon digital experience will take place on Tuesday, March 30 at noon and celebrate the energy, passion, and power brought to the fight against cardiovascular diseases. The upright growth habit of this plant makes it ideal for container and garden beds alike. The cascading types are perfectly suited for hanging baskets. Begonia bulbs can be directly planted in the garden in the spring with no more than an inch of soil covering them. For earlier blooms, start your begonias indoors, six to eight weeks before the last frost date. If you love pink, consider planting Begonia ‘Helena’. This upright begonia, from Blackmore & Langdon, England, offers true pink blooms that are softly fluted. As you plan for the upcoming gardening season, consider incorporating some summer-flowering bulbs into your landscape. They are wonderful companions to other plants and they are a popular source of food for beneficial pollinators such as honey bees and monarch butterflies. Easily grown, flowering bulbs will add unique interest, color, and some even fragrance to your Maine landscape during the hottest months of the growing season. Young Frankie had untreated medical needs and had a medical emergency that involved emergency diagnostics, life-saving surgery, then followup diagnostics and evaluations that eventually gave him a clean bill of health and full recovery. His vet bills smashed our budget, totaling $7,000! Soon after Frankie, we rescued a burly 15-pound stray, a hearty orange tiger we named Rocky, because he seemed so strong and healthy. Within two weeks a volunteer noticed his breathing was abnormal.

Rushed to the emergency vet, we learned this big wonderful guy was having heart failure! Rocky was hospitalized for several days and nights until he was stabilized, then put on a course of heart medications. Due to his unhealthy heart, Rocky has a prognosis of a shortened life. His care cost us nearly $3,000! We are thrilled to say that Frankie has made a full recovery and this wonderful boy has been adopted, along with three other Safe Haven kitties by a loving family. As for Rocky, he is being closely monitored at our Cattail Farm house. To help cheer up Rocky we opened the screen door between rooms and he and another kitty, Lucas, became best buddies. neering and, later, Goldman Environmental Consultants. He traveled throughout the country working on projects such as nuclear waste storage, environmental remediation, and the Big Dig in Boston. His love of the environment carried through in his volunteer work with the Bridgewater Conservation Commission and Wells Reserve & Laudholm Trust. In addition to his serious side, Rick was playful at heart. His expressed his love of the outdoors through hiking, canoeing, skiing, biking, sorting through tide pools, and summers spent in Wolfeboro, NH. A fan of Big Band–era music and singing in the car, Rick lifted his baritone voice with the Highland Glee Club of Needham, MA. Everyone who knew Rick knows his dry wit, his robust laugh, and twinkle in his eye. He loved good food and good company, and his family could always catch him sneaking a second bowl of ice cream when the mood struck. A memorial service will be planned for late summer and announced by Bibber Memorial Chapel, Wells. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to A Place to Start for Dementia (www.aplacetostartfordementia.org) or the Nature Conservancy (www.nature.org). To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Rick’s Book of Memories Page at www.bibberfuneral. com. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

CAPE NEDDICK – Evelyne Harper Neill died March 12, 2021 after a brief illness. She was an artist, adventurous traveler, avid gardener, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved the ocean and her swimming was elegant to behold. Raised in France, the eldest of five children to Donald and Francoise Harper, her idyllic childhood was ended by the Nazi invasion, when her family moved to the US. She had vivid memories of bombings as the family departed France, including holding a warm shell fragment found by the side of the road. After high school, she attended college and traveled for two years in Mexico. On return, she met and married the late artist Harmon Neill in Ogunquit, where they raised four children and where she lived until her death. Evelyne earned her Bachelors and Master’s from UNH. She taught French and Spanish at Wells High School, and then worked for many years with Perkins Realty. Her family remembers how quickly people took to her, noting her graciousness and how drawn they were by her welcoming nature. Even decades later, her children’s friends fondly recall meeting her. She was a decades-long active member and at times officer of the Ogunquit Art Asso-

ciation, where she made many wonderful friends. She painted primarily landscapes, often inspired by her wide-ranging travels and by her gardens. She took great joy from her family. She is survived by four children, Monty, Frank, Cloe, and Georgia; their spouses, Shelley, Terri, and Joyce; three grandsons, Damian, Jason ,and Jeremy; three great-grandchildren, four siblings, and many cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends. A celebration of her life is being planned. Visit www.lucaseatonfuneralhome.com for online condolences. • • • • • • • • • •

FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth.

Evelyne Harper Neill, 93

Somersworth, NH

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, One of the main reasons that I have not upgraded to Windows 10 is that I’ve been told it no longer has the snipping tool! I use that tool nearly daily and have no intention of giving it up without a fight! If it is included in Windows 10, how do you find/access it? Thanks for your help and this great column, G Dear G, Good news! The snipping tool is included with Windows 10. Here is how you would access it: 1. Click on the start menu icon or tap the start menu key on your keyboard; 2. When the start menu opens, don’t click on it, just start typing “Snipping Tool” and it will appear at the top of your start menu; 3. Click on the snipping tool icon, or if it is at the top of the menu, just press the “Enter” key on your keyboard; 4. If you want to keep the snipping tool on your taskbar for easy access, just right click on the Snipping tool icon on your taskbar, and click “Pin To Taskbar” in the context menu. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I just found your column and am loving it. It is so informative. My problem is not serious as computer problems go. I have Windows 10. My question is how do I keep my computer desktop on all the time. It seems if I am not touching the mouse, it is like it is in sleep mode. Thank you, Wanda Dear Wanda, All you need to do is adjust the power settings. Here is how: 1. Click on the start button; 2. In the start menu, click on the small gear icon. It is located just above the power icon that you use to shut down

the computer; 3. A “Windows Settings” page will open. Click on “System”; 4. In the left column, click on “Power & Sleep”; 5. Click the drop-down list and select the amount of time desired before the screen goes to sleep. You can select “never” if you want; 6. Click the second drop-down list to select the desired amount of time before the computer goes into sleep mode. If the above steps don’t fix your problem, you can click on the link under “Related Settings” that says, “Additional power settings”. This will take you to the power settings in the Control Panel which you can change as well. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I’ve learned so much from your column, its hard to thank you enough. I want to back up/

save my business accounts/ files without using the internet. I am using the jump drive right now, but I’m thinking that you gave warning about them only opening so many times and then useless? I use Quickbooks for accounting. Any suggestions for this type of back up? Thanks, Rhonda Dear Rhonda, If your jump drive (or any USB data stick type of device) is the only thing you backup to, you could be at risk of losing your data just when you need it most. Here is what I would suggest. You could buy a USB external hard drive and use that to backup. It is not quite as sensitive to external conditions as the jump drive. If you go with this type of backup, you still want to replace the external hard drive every couple
