Grow Your Own Apothecary Garden with Emily Springer SOUTHERN MAINE Learn how to grow a garden of historic plants that can be used to care for yourself and your family with Emily Springer of Meeting House Herb Farm in Scarborough on Wednesday, March 31 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. Emily will present a lecture on how American Colonists used plants for their home apothecaries, and offers tips on how you can establish your own apothecary garden. Emily founded Meeting House Herb Farm, an herb grow-
ers collaborative, in 2017, following a successful 20-year career in financial services. She also leads Infusion Herb Company, an artisan apothecary focused on a plants-first approach to self-care, and empowering women with herbal products and wisdom. Emily holds a degree from The College of William & Mary, and is a life-long student of plants. She shares her knowledge of their many benefits through her herbs, herbal products, workshops, and consulting. The farm and apothecary are located on an
historic property that was once a 1730s outpost, Pony Express stop, and garrison. The Springer family makes their home in an old Meeting House built in 1731, largely still in original condition. This free, virtual program is presented via Zoom with registration required at www.oldyork.org. Registrants will receive an email with the zoom link for the program with registration confirmation through Simpletix, the online ticketing system. There is also an optional $10 soup and bread supper available
for this event where participants can enjoy a bowl of homemade Vegetable and Herb Gypsy Soup (vegan), accompanied by bread from When Pigs Fly Bakery in Kittery. Local contactless pickup 3-5 p.m. only on March 31 at the Old York Museum Center, 3 Lindsay Road. Meals will be packaged, labeled and ready for pick up outside the side door (by the blue stone patio) and meals will need to be reheated at home. For more information, call 207-363-1756 or go to www.oldyork.org.
New Owner of Loco Coco’s Shares Ingredients of Her Success By Jesse Scardina, Staff Writer KITTERY When Jami Scardina started at Loco Coco’s Tacos in Kittery, she never thought she’d one day own the restaurant. Scardina, 44, came on as an assistant manager in 2013, bringing decades of experience to the single location Mexican eatery that had continued to grow in its then nine years in existence. Now more than 16 years serving the seacoast, Loco’s has a new owner. And while Loco’s has deep roots in Kittery as one of the more established restaurants in a
continuously growing “foodie” destination, the new owner’s roots to Maine’s oldest town run much deeper. “One of the best parts of Kittery, besides the location and beauty, is the sense of community,” Scardina said. “People look out for one another and they raise their families here for generations, so to have aa business that sees that embodied every day is amazing.” Scardina, a 1994 graduate of Traip Academy, was the first of four Scardina children to graduate from Traip. Her father, Marco

Extension of State Income Tax Deadline AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced recently that the state of Maine will move the deadline for Maine individual income tax payments from April 15 to May 17. The change aligns with the federal government’s recent extension of the federal tax filing and payment deadline. Additionally, the filing deadline for Maine tax returns, which is distinct from the payment deadline, is automatically tied to the federal date. As a result, the filing deadline for 2020 Maine income tax returns has also been moved to May 17. Like the Inter-

Scardina, spent more than 40 years working at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, the same place where her brother, Cory, currently works. She has two more brothers: Nick, a local landscaper, and Jesse, who works with his sister at Loco’s. It was the draw of having a family with deep Kittery roots that led original owners, Ramona and Luis Valdez, to sell to Scardina, knowing she would continue to grow the restaurant. “I approached them about

self-employment tax, do not need to file any forms or call to qualify for this deadline extension to May 17. For individuals who file via Form 1040ME (Maine Individual Income Tax Return) for the 2020 tax return, penalties and interest will not be applied for the period from April 16 until May 17. Additionally, the bipartisan supplemental budget enacted by the Legislature and signed into law by Governor Mills allows recipients of unemployment benefits to claim exemption from Maine income tax up to $10,200 for tax year 2020. This applies to those with an annual income of
less than $150,000, regardless of filing status. Qualification criteria and tax forms are available at www.maine.gov/revenue. Lowincome Mainers may call 2-1-1 or visit www.211maine.org for assistance in identifying free tax preparation resources available throughout the state. The federal government’s extension does not apply to corporate returns and payments nor to individual and corporate estimated payments, all of which remain due on April 15. As a result, Maine’s deadlines for corporate and/or estimated filing and payments will also remain April 15. Have you seen our
