Center for Wildlife Breaks Ground CAPE NEDDICK The sound of heavy machinery is not usually music to a wildlife center’s ears, but for the Center for Wildlife in Cape Neddick, it means one thing – they’ve broken ground! For over 30 years the Center for Wildlife has been nestled at the base of Mount Agamenticus, and in that time has had only one indoor expansion. However, since that time demand for services has increased exponentially. “In 1995 we treated about 500 patients, and had no formal internship, environmental education, or research programming. This past year we treated 2,400 injured wild animals, hosted 30 interns and apprentices from across the country, and presented 375 environmental education programs in the community.” shares Executive Director, Kristen Lamb. Space is a real issue and has started to hinder the Center’s ability to serve wildlife and the public. The ranch house rests on standing water requiring expensive HEPA filters to run in each room 24 hours a day to keep air quality safe for patients and staff.

This winter, the “Mammal” and “Reptile” Rooms have been full. Typically, patient volume triples during nesting season. Also, lack of space means the Center has had to turn away much needed donations of X-ray machines and incubators from local hospitals and vet clinics. With no indoor classroom space, the Education program has been forced to cancel programming due to weather. Approximately 100 requests for field trips and earned income events- representing about $45,000 in program fees have been turned away due to lack of appropriate space this year alone. There is no state or federal funding available for the medical treatment of wild animals. Since 2014, Center for Wildlife has been working feverishly on not only keeping up with demand

and establishing themselves as a leader in conservation medicine and environmental education,

but also laying the groundwork for a capital campaign. In 2016, through a mini-campaign, 8.5 acres of land adjacent to the current property and also abutting the Mount Agamenticus Conservation Region’s 16,000 acres of conservation land was purchased. Subsequently, a partnership with McHenry Architecture, Jewett Construction, and Ambit Engineering helped create plans for a state-of-the-art wildlife clinic and nature center – com-

plete with an indoor auditorium, additional classroom space, and intern housing (see rendition in photo). “Our new campus will be a place where community members can slow down and connect with the wildlife, and learn about how to steward the land in their own towns and backyards. Now fully engaged in a capital campaign, the Center has raised $2.4M towards a $4.5M project total through early and lead gifts. Discovering Baseball’s First Indian BERWICK Ed Rice, former journalist, college instructor, and author of “Baseball’s First Indian”, will speak at 6 p.m. at the Berwick Public Library on Tuesday, April 2, on the legacy of Louis Sockalexis, the first-known Native American to play professional baseball. Louis Francis Sockalexis was a member of the Penobscot tribe, born at Indian Island, ME. He played his entire baseball career (1897-1899) as an outfielder for the Cleveland Spiders. Rice says Sockalexis was

the inspiration for the nickname of the Cleveland professional team, and a largely unrecognized, courageous civil rights icon representing Penobscot Nation and the state of Maine. Sockalexis paved the way for other pioneer American Indian baseball players, like Jim Thorpe and Hall of Fame pitcher Charlie Bender. He was legendary in his own time and, because of his sterling play in two seasons at Holy Cross College, he is considered one of the greatest college baseball players of the 19th century.

The Berwick Public Library is located at 103 Old Pine Hill Road, Berwick.

Nathan Dowling and his wife Katie operate Balata Fitness, a place where members of this close-knit community go to be healthy, reach goals, support one another, and make changes emotionally and physically. Nathan was recently diagnosed with Atrial flutter and Atrial fibrillation. Basically abnormal heart rhythms. In atrial fibrillation, the atria beat irregularly. In atrial flutter, the atria beat regularly, but faster than usual and more often than the ventricles. Medication is

used to lower the risk of stroke and help maintain normal heart rhythms. Not only is the medication very expensive, in this case, it is a band aid for a problem that

OGUNQUIT Great Works Regional Land Trust is saving money, generating energy, and protecting the environment. After completing a 12-month, $15,000 fundraising campaign, Great Works Regional Land Trust installed a 4.80 kw solar electric system at the nonprofit’s headquarters location in Ogunquit. ReVision Energy estimates a solar production of 5,003 kWhs of clean, renewable electricity annually. This would offset about 5,268 lbs of carbon pollution each year. “ReVision Energy is thrilled to welcome Great Works Regional Land Trust into the solar family! We’ve been a longtime supporter of Great Works’ programs, and with the installation of this solar array Great Works has clearly shown their dedication to Maine’s clean energy future,

says Jill McLaughlin of ReVision Energy. The solar credits earned will benefit not only Great Works’ administrative offices at Beach Plum Farm in Ogunquit, but also the caretaker home at Beach Plum Farm. The racked photovoltaic solar array consists of 16 grid-tied solar panels that convert sunlight to electrical currents. Great Works founding Board member Joseph Hardy of Wells provided the inspiration and lead financial gift for the project. “Alice and I are extremely pleased with and proud of the Trust’s successes in its primary mission of land conservation and we have been increasingly worried about the future ravages of climate change, says Hardy. “Though the few solar panels at Beach Plum won’t offset much carbon dioxide, they show that the Trust is doing its part in the effort to minimize some of the worst climate impacts, and set a good example for its members and the general public. As our state representative, Patty Hymanson, likes to say, ‘we are all in this together’. “It’s important that Great Works stands as a model of environmental responsibility in all asSee GREEN page 6...

Governor Mills Signs Emergency Legislation Extending Fishing Season

AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills signed emergency legislation granting Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner Judy Camuso the authority to extend Maine’s fishing season. In the northern zone,

Maine’s ice fishing season closes on March 31 and the open water season begins on April 1, but fluctuating temperatures and shifting seasons have resulted in colder northern waters that can still be fished this year. “Fishing is a cornerstone of our state’s economy, support-

ing more than 3,300 jobs and contributing more than $319 million annually, including $75 million from ice fishing alone, said Governor Mills. “With northern Maine still firmly in winter’s grip, Commissioner Camuso will now be able to extend the ice fishing season for that part of the state,

allowing anglers the opportunity to continue fishing and our businesses the chance to continue operating. “The current ice fishing season closes on Sunday, March 31, and open water season begins Monday. With weather conditions currently more appropriate for ice fishing than open water fishing, I am grateful for Governor Mills’ support for extending the ice fishing season in the northern zone, said MDIFW Commissioner Judy Camuso. “Ice fishing is one of Maine’s most treasured pastimes. For me, it certainly makes the cold and brutal winter months much more bearable, said Senate President Troy Jackson. “Due to the seasonality of the

sport and the unpredictability of the weather, it only makes sense to allow the Inland, Fisheries and Wildlife Commissioner to extend the season should the weather allow it. With more snow expected in the County this week, I welcome the opportunity to get more ice fishing in before the spring weather arrives. “Ice fishing is an integral piece of Aroostook County’s way of life, said Representative Danny Martin. “For our community the annual movement of northern Maine’s ice shacks marks the change of seasons and the recurrence of this timehonored family tradition. This bill will offer the Department the flexibility to lengthen the ice fishing season and recognize the diversity that exists within our state’ s climate.

~ News ~ Governor Mills Announces Initiatives To Expand Electric Vehicle Use AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills and Efficiency Maine Trust announced a set of initiatives that will expand the use of electric vehicles across Maine in an effort to reduce the state’s carbon footprint and reliance on fossil fuels. The initiatives, which include the creation of financial incentives to purchase electric vehicles and the installation of at least 50 public vehicle charging stations, are in part the result of a $5.1 million settlement won last year by then-Attorney General Mills against Volkswagen. “Maine people shell out

lowering the operating costs of those fleets, and raising visibility and awareness of EVs and their benefits. The other half of the $5.1 million in funding will be will be used for a rebate program for the purchase or lease of EVs for Maine residents and businesses. Efficiency Maine estimates the program, which will be modeled on those in use in other states, will incentivize the purchase of approximately 900 EVs -- more than doubling the number of EVs currently on Maine roads. To help build out the transportation infrastructure to serve the growing number of electric

vehicles which will spur tourism, benefit the Maine economy, and protect the environment, Efficiency Maine said that it will issue in April a competitive solicitation for bids to install 50 to 60 electric vehicle charging stations across the state at public properties, workplaces or multi-unit dwellings. Locating the charging stations at a mix of cross-roads and destination towns will make it easier for Maine businesses and municipal governments to introduce more EVs and plugin hybrids to their fleets and lower their transportation costs since running vehicles on electric charge costs less than gas or diesel.

Governor Mills said that approximately half of the $5.1 million will be used for a financial incentive program to help public agencies and organizations that serve the elderly, low-income Mainers, and Mainers with special needs, to purchase EVs. Efficiency Maine estimates that these funds also will be sufficient to leverage local funding for 100 new EVs being used in local communities,

It is time to usher in the next generation of technologies that will move our state towards a renewable future,” said Governor Mills. “These initiatives are a critical step in that direction. By increasing our use of electric vehicles and building out the clean energy infrastructure to support them, Maine is making substantial and meaningful progress in transitioning us away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources, which will help slash carbon emissions and combat climate change. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Kennebunkport Historical Society Lecture Series KENNEBUNKPORT The Kennebunkport Historical Society (KHS) is offering residents and visitors an opportunity to immerse themselves in the remarkable history of the Kennebunks with the launch of “A Walk Through History, a free monthly lecture series focusing on historic topics of interest. The series begins on Tuesday, April 2, with a presentation by Kirsten Camp, Executive Administrator of KHS, entitled “From Walkers to Bushes: A History of a Family. Camp’s presentation offers fascinating insights into generations of his-

tory of the Bush family in the Kennebunks dating back to the late 19th century (Bush family pictured above). Discussion and refreshments will follow each presentation. The lecture will be held at

the KHS Pasco Center at 125 North Street in Kennebunkport. While the programs are free to the public, donations to KHS are encouraged. To learn more, visit www.kennebunkporthistoricalsociety.com.

Award-winning Author and Poet to Speak at BA SOUTH BERWICK Poet and author Marjorie Thomsen will be featured in Berwick Academy’s annual Mary Anker Poet-in-Residence series at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 4. This event is free and open to the public. Thomsen’s poems are inspired from the landscapes of North Carolina and Virginia, where she grew up, and from New England, where she currently lives. She is the author of “Pretty Things Please which was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. She won the New England Poetry Club’s Firman Houghton Award and received a first-place poetry honor from The University of Iowa School of Social Work. Most recently, her poems have won Anna Davidson Rosenberg awards. Marjorie earned degrees from Simmons College and The Catholic University of America’s School of Social Work. She has been certified to act as poet-inresidence by Mass Poetry, a nonprofit organization that works to broaden the audience for poetry in greater New England. She serves on the Board of the New England Poetry Club and lives in Cambridge, MA, with her family. Marjorie’s reading on Thursday evening will be the culmination of a week-long residency at Berwick Academy, where she and Middle School students will engage in the process of reading, writing, and sharing poetry in daily workshops. She will also be sharing her work with the Lower and Upper School students. A focus of the week will be to consider how kindness and empathy are expressed in poetry. “I will encourage students to take risks in their own writing and to think of poetry as a joy and not a burden, says Marjorie. “The world will inevitably be different, and I think splendidly better because the students will be writing new poems—their unique record of what it is to be alive. Thomsen’s hope for Thursday’s evening event is to include any

and all students and faculty who would like to read alongside her. As time allows, she will read poems from her collection “Pretty Things Please and a few new ones that have recently been published. The residency and evening event were created by Kimberly Green, the first Poet-in-Residence at Berwick Academy, and Mary Anker, retired Berwick Academy English teacher. Their love of poetry, energy, and vision, resulted in the creation of this annual series, which began in 2010. Poets Richard Blanco, Naomi Shihab Nye, Tom Moore, McKeel McBride, Sophia Snow, Ellen Waterston, Willie Perdomo, and others have been featured and welcomed by an often-standing room only re-

sponse from the greater Seacoast Area. The program was named in Mary’s honor in 2017 for her dedication, passion, and commitment to bringing poetry to Berwick Academy. Located at BA’s HUB in Jackson Library, 31 Academy Street, South Berwick. For more information, call 207-384-6372 or www.berwickacademy.org.

OPA Screens “Breaker Morant OGUNQUIT The 6th film in Ogunquit Performing Arts’ 18th Annual Classic Film Series is the award-winning Australian film, “Breaker Morant. The film will be screened on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. at the Dunaway Center, 23 School Street, Ogunquit. The 1980 film is a dramatic, controversial war film, compellingly directed by Bruce Beresford and starring British actor Edward Woodward. The film inspires audience sympathy for its three, soldier protagonists, who are in fact guilty of the act for which they are condemned. Beresford shaped the story to place the focus not on their guilt or innocence but on the far more universal theme of the extreme acts soldiers are driven to commit and the two-faced military politics of the time. The film is based on an actual incident from the Boer

The film also stars Bryan Brown and Jack Thompson. “Breaker Morant won several Australian Film Institute Awards, as well as many nominations in other countries. It was also a commercial success, paving the way for subsequent Australian films which became widely popular in the 1980’s. The film was favorably compared to Stanley Kubrick’s “Paths of Glory, and resonated especially with American audiences, identifying their recent experiences with the Viet Nam war. The film will be shown on a full wall-size screen; admission, parking, and popcorn are free! For more information, please visit www.ogunquitperformingarts.org.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Kennebunk High School to Show Rubber Jellyfish KENNEBUNK Rubber Jellyfish, a new, groundbreaking film just released in the United States will be shown Thursday, April 4, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. in the Economos Lecture Hall, Kennebunk High School on Fletcher Street in Kennebunk. The feature-length film, sponsored by the Kennebunk High School Environmental Awareness Team, documents the personal journey of Carly Wilson, who sets out to meet key players on all sides in the fight to ban balloons and exposes the truth about this popular party product. As she travels

around Australia seeking to understand the science and various points of view, Wilson discovers a range of issues, from the heartbreaking impact on sea turtles to the potentially deadly effect of helium on children. Her journey takes her from littered beaches to the capital as she speaks to activists, businesses and politicians to find out why the balloon problem is being ignored and whether something can be done. “Our team has been working diligently to bring awareness to balloon trash, hosting last year’s inflatable whale “bEarthday Party” at Kenne-

bunk Elementary School for children and now this year’s Rubber Jellyfish event for the older students and adults,” said KHS EAT president Molly Hetzel, a senior and founder of the team. Admission to the film is free. The Natural Resources Council of Maine, Maine Audubon, Balloons Blow and Marine Mammals of Maine join in support of the students’ efforts to make an impact on how society uses balloons and will be on hand during the event to answer questions about balloon trash in Maine and its effect on wildlife.

Threshold Stage Company Presents “The Roommate”

KITTERY “The Odd Couple” meets “Breaking Bad” in Threshold Stage Company’s Seacoast premiere of Jen Silverman’s critically acclaimed comedy “The Roommate” at the Star Theatre in Kittery. “The Roommate” revolves around two middle-aged women with completely opposite life-experiences as they become roommates and forge an unlikely friendship. Robyn, a vegan lesbian slam poet with an enigmatic past, moves from the Bronx, NY to Iowa City. Sharon, a somewhat sheltered and naïve recently-divorced housewife in need of a roommate, welcomes Robyn into her home and becomes increasingly intrigued

and inspired by the mysterious past that Robyn is attempting to leave behind. The friendship and unlikely partnership the two form results in unpredictable and outrageously humorous situations and revelations about the cultural roles that are expected of us, the choices we make and who we are versus who we wish we could be. “The Roommate” is a very current cutting-edge comedy that is typically produced by large regional theatres. “We were very fortunate to obtain the rights to Silverman’s critically acclaimed play” says Threshold co-artistic director Peter Motson. “We wanted to focus on the acting this season by producing a play with

a small cast, well-written roles and a compelling dynamic dramatic structure; and ‘The Roommate’ fits the bill perfectly”. Reuniting award-winning actress and Seacoast favorite Heather Glenn Wixson as Sharon with the accomplished Arizona-based equity actress Johanna Carl-

isle-Zepeda as Robyn, under the direction of A. Nora Long for “The Roommate”, Threshold looks to re-capture the magical and mesmerizing chemistry that the trio achieved in last season’s critically acclaimed production of “The Clean House”. The improbable relationship between Robyn and Sharon unfolds in the kitchen of Sharon’s two-story Iowa home.

“The Roommate” runs April 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. Shows on April 6, 7, 13 and 14 are at 3 p.m. at The Star Theatre at the Kittery Community Center, 120 Rogers Road, Kittery. 26th Annual Production of “To God Be The Glory” YORK For the past 25 years, the annual production of “To God Be the Glory,” a musical presentation of the life of Jesus, has been a highlight of the Lenten Season in York. This April, the 26th annual production of 2019 will go on stage. Sponsored annually by the Roman Catholic Parish of the Ascension of the Lord, the show will be performed at St. Christopher Church in York at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4; Friday, April 5; and Saturday, April 6. On Sunday, April 7, the performance will be at 3 p.m. Admission is free, but a donation is welcome. Before the Thursday performance, at 5:30 p.m., there will be free pizza donated by Anthony’s Food Shop, Ruby’s Wood Grill, York 54, and York House of Pizza. Based fully on the Gospel of the New Testament, “To God Be the Glory” depicts the birth and public ministry of Jesus Christ and enacts a realistic portrayal of his Passion and Death on the Cross. It concludes with

a spirit-lifting celebration of his Resurrection. The audience is deeply affected by the show and many attendees come back year after year. “To God Be the Glory” can surely be described as both an authentic religious experience and an engrossing theater event. To God Be the Glory” is performed by an all-amateur group of more than 100 singers,

musicians, actors, and supporting volunteers, some of whom come from non-Catholic faith traditions. York resident Rita Leroux wrote and produced the show in 1994 and continues as its producer. St. Christopher Church in York is one of three churches in the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord. Rev. Scott M. Mower is the Pastor.

Tips to Survive Unexpected Tax Bills It’s estimated that up to 30 million Americans may end up owing more in taxes. The reasons for the surprise bills vary – from limited deductions available to reduced payroll withholding rates. Whatever the cause, receiving a tax bill you hadn’t planned for can be chaotic, especially if the amount you owe is large and you don’t have the means to pay it out of pocket. Here are a few tips to help survive this tax season from Rebecca Gramuglia, Personal Finance Expert at TopCashback. com: Make sure it’s not a mistake. If your bill seems higher than expected, check your records to make sure the numbers add up. If you’re still unsure, review your return with a tax professional/accountant to make sure you’ve included every exemption and credit for which you qualify. Pay as much as possible. It is better to file than not file at all. Pay as much of the bill as possible to lower penalties and interest fees. Without filing on time, you can face some pricey penalties. If you cannot pay the bill in full, the following options may be suitable for your situation: Get an extension. In many cases, the IRS will be willing to extend your deadline to pay by 120 days – if you owe less than $100,000. Simply send the IRS what you can and then request an extension to pay by filling out Form 1127 prior to the April 15 deadline. To be eligible for an extension, you will need to explain any financial hardship that paying the bill in full will cause. Consider the IRS’ installment plan. Yes, Uncle Sam will let you pay your hefty bill over time. If you cannot pay your bill in full, establish a payment plan with the IRS. Be sure to include a Form 9465 Installment Agreement Request, or you can apply online to set up a payment plan. There’s a small fee to set this up and interest to consider, but a payment plan can help you steer clear of additional penalties associated with missed deadlines. Visit the IRS website for details. Borrow to pay it off. If you need more than 120 days, you may want to consider a bank loan or even a credit card. While going into debt to pay off debt might not seem like a great option at first, the interest rate and fees assessed by a credit card issuer or bank may be lower than the penalties and interest assessed by the IRS.

To reduce the interest burden of paying your tax bill with a credit card, you could transfer what you owe into a new card with a favorable, introductory rate. Start preparing for next year. To avoid any more surprises, remember to start saving money now for a potential unexpected bill next year (or you may need to RSVP to the surprise tax bill party again!). Never assume that you will be receiving a refund. Put small amounts from your paychecks into a separate account or save money while going about your normal day to day habits, like shopping online. Using cashback websites like TopCashback. com can help you earn money back from your favorite retailers including Target, Macy’s and Walmart. Did you know that you can also earn cash back by doing your taxes with H&R Block? The retailer is currently offering 21% cash back or $10 off a Tax Pro Return Review on TopCashback. com. Here are three ways you can start preparing for next year right now: Adjust your withholdings. Take advantage of your completed return forms to help you decide if your withholding should

be adjusted for next year. If you under-withheld, for example, adjust your 2019 withholdings to avoid penalties next year. Similarly, if you received a large refund, adjust your exemptions for next year to get more money throughout the year rather than getting a large refund the following year. Re-evaluate your retirement plan. The post-tax season is a great time to ask yourself if you’re making the best financial decisions. Whether you occasionally

set money aside for retirement or take advantage of an employer 401(k) match ask yourself, “Am I putting away enough to offset my tax burden? Remember contributing towards your future is key to achieve financial wealth and picking the right retirement plan is crucial. Set a system that works for you. There’s no shame in misplacing one or two receipts but losing important documents could really impact your year-end deducti-

bles and contributions. Take advantage of hightech financial management tools to help you keep track of all your important documents and spending habits. But, if you prefer old-school options like a box or spreadsheet, that’s ok too, find the system that works for you and stick to it. Rise in Single-Family Home Prices AUGUSTA Sales of single-family existing homes in Maine eased slightly, while prices rose 2.85% comparing February 2019 to February 2018. The Maine Association of REALTORSÂŽ released statistics indicating a 0.49% decline in sales during the month of February 2019 compared to February 2018. The median sales price for the 818 homes sold statewide reached $200,000. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and

half sold for less. “Conversations with REALTORSŽ across Maine and a review of the statistics indicate that we may be shifting to a more balanced real estate market. Since 2011, Maine’s real estate economy has been bullish with year-over-year increases in units

sold and median sold prices, says Peter Harrington, 2019 President of the Maine Association of REALTORSŽ and Broker/Partner with Malone Commercial Brokers in Portland. “Sales volume over the See HOME page 26...

Talk to Help Parents with Autistic, ADHD, Quirky Kids Thrive Naturally SOUTH BERWICK Autism or ADHD might seem like a lifelong sentence for children and parents but Health Coach Katie Semro believes things can change. On Tuesday April 2 at 7 p.m., Semro will be speaking at the South Berwick Public Library to tell the stories of such diagnosed children who

now feel better and behave better just by making changes to their diets, nutrients, gut health, and lifestyle and sharing options that any family can use. South Berwick Public Library is located at 27 Young Street, South Berwick. Call the library at 207-384-3308 or visit www.southberwicklibrary.org.

Aging In-Place Specialist to Speak at Seacoast Home Show SOUTH BERWICK /NH The Seacoast region is bursting with independent senior living communities. This growth continues despite survey data, like a recent February 2019 AARP-New Hampshire survey which revealed that a staggering 95% of adults over 50 want to age in their homes. One possible explanation for this seeming disconnect in the market is that more than half of homes in New Hampshire and Maine were built in the 1980s or earlier. Many features of older homes make aging in them difficult, and sometimes dangerous. Today, most builders work to Universal design standards which create an environment that can accommodate the widest array of people. Houses built thirty of forty years ago did not consider the need for wider doorways or barrier-free bathrooms. Stairs, carpeting, and inaccessible kitchens also create unfavorable living conditions for older and less mobile folks. NAHB Certified Aging-inPlace Specialist Len Bogh, President of Great Northern Builders, based in South Berwick, meets with homeowners to help them envision how they can remain in their home for as long as they want. Len describes a key area

for homeowners to consider.” Access in and out of the bathroom including the ability to maneuver yourself in regards to bathing, is liberating.” For many people, a large remodeling project is taking place once the kids have left the house, but long before they are faced with the lessened mobility that comes on in later years. It can be easy to lose site of the value of including aging-in-place elements during such a home update. “In the kitchen you take for granted being able to reach certain surfaces in your 30s, 40s, 50s, but when you’re in your 70s and 80s it’s not so easy to reach upper cabinets.” Len says that he deals with older clients faced with the need to quickly adapt their home to their mobility. “One of the most important aspects of these renovations is being proactive. Aging in place accommodations are more difficult to pull off when you have reached a point that you’re in an immediate need to have those adaptations. Regardless of the age of a client, we want them to look at what their changing circumstances might be down the road.” Homeowners could see a significant return on investSee SENIORS page 26...

Health & Fitness Waban Celebrates Success of 48th Telethon SANFORD The community came together for the 48th time to raise funds and show its support for Waban at the annual Telethon, which was held on Saturday, March 16 in Sanford. Individuals, businesses and organizations gathered at the St. Ignatius Gym to surpass previous records for an all-time high total of $110,725! Father Phil Tracy from Thérèse of Lisieux kicked off the event by welcoming the Waban Telethon to the St. Ignatius gym. On behalf of the Parish, he presented a check for over $3,000 and predicted that with the help of the faithbased and other community members that Waban would “pierce the $100,000 total this year.” Over three dozen businesses and numerous individuals generously supported the event as one of Waban’s Wall of Supporters by donating $1,000 or more. Midway through the day, Kennebunk Savings’ own Kenny Bear helped President and CEO, Brad Paige present a check for $7,500, the largest individual donation of the day. Central Furniture generously donated cottage furniture, gas grills and other items, as did Landry’s Furniture Barn. Many other businesses were instrumental in making the Telethon a success by donating goods and services, and/or volunteering their time throughout the day. The phone bank was staffed by volunteers from Southern Maine Health Care, SIS Bank, Kennebunk Savings and the Altrusa Club. This year’s hosts were long-

time volunteers, RJ and Jim Legere, Waban’s Melissa Hall who joined Neal Meltzer and Gervaise Flynn, Waban’s Executive and Deputy Directors and former WCSH meteorologist Kevin Mannix. Every penny was counted to get to the grand total, as Val and Doris Grondin circulated throughout York County collecting donations – large and small – from friends and area businesses which had set out donation buckets to gather pocket change prior to the Telethon. Their efforts garnered more than $4,000, an amount which was then matched by General Electric, bringing their total raised to $8,800! Throughout the 48 years of its existence, Waban’s Annual

Telethon has raised a total of more than $2.6 million to benefit Waban and to help provide critical services and programs to children and adults with autism, intellectual, and developmental disabilities. For more than 50 years, Waban has been working on behalf of children and adults with autism, intellectual, and developmental disabilities, providing services and supporting more than 3,000 individuals annually. It offers many programs including adult residential services, therapeutic preschool and K-2 programs, children’s and adult case management, day habilitation and employment services and clinical services. Peel and slice your fruit and place in a medium mixing bowl and sprinkle your whiskey over the fruit and carefully mix with your hands to coat both sides of the fruit. ~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS We have two beautiful black shorthaired kitties are at our Adoption Center, Birdie and Cookie. They were born outdoors to a feral mom who was fed by a kind neighbor woman. The woman noticed that the cat didn’t eat the food but carried it off in her mouth. Of course, this meant momma was feeding her babies somewhere. Luckily, the brood was rescued by Safe Haven and all eventually found homes. Unfortunately, the person who adopted Birdie and Cookie passed away, so they’re now back at Safe Haven. They’re very shy but coming along and have been known to sit in someone’s lap if the room is very quiet. They even tolerate some petting. What these two kittens need now is a quiet and loving

...SENIORS from page 18 ment when compared to the cost of staying in a rehabilitation center after a fall or injury. As well as those who stay in the home they own rather than moving into a Senior Living Community. The average cost of a one-bedroom apartment in an independent senior living community is $5,000 per month. One year of senior living rent could pay for a substantial home remodeling project. The growing number of in-home medical and personal aide services also help the aging stay in their homes longer. Great Northern Builders Business Manager, Maya Bogh, says, “When we remodel a home we are thinking about doorways, accessibility, and what’s going

on the main floor. We ask ‘Could this be something adapted to age with you?’ ‘Can we bring the laundry upstairs and the bedroom downstairs?’ Barrier free showers and first floor laundry are both high on the wishlist for a majority of homeowners – not just the 55+ community. Len Bogh will speak about Aging-In-Place home design modifications at the Seacoast Home Show taking place at the Whittemore Center Arena in Durham, NH on April 6-7. Attendees can hear Len speak on April 6 at 3:15 p.m. or visit booth 214 during show hours (Saturday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. or Sunday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.) to learn more about home remodeling projects with Great Northern Builders.

past few months has shown decreases compared to figures from a year ago. However, forsale inventory continues to be tight—4% lower than February of 2018. While slightly decreasing, the February 2019 data shows a comfortable pace—the third highest February sales volume since 2011. According to The National Association of Realtors, sales across the country were down 1.4% while the national MSP of $251,400 represents a 3.6% increase. Regionally, sales in the Northeast increased 1.5% and the MSP rose 3.8% to $272,900. “Traditionally, now is the time when we see a boost in the listing inventory numbers and a steady uptick in sales statewide for the second and third quarters. Mortgage interest rates are drifting lower, which will also be helpful for home sales, adds Harrington.

Jim attended local schools before enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard serving as a Machinest Mate 3rd Class and SCUBA diver on the USCG Cutter “Taney at the Captain of the Port in San Francisco, CA. In 1965, he married his ! rst wife, Judy, and upon his discharge from the Coast Guard, returned to Maine settling in Wells, where they raised their two children, Kimberly and James, Jr. (Jamie). While Jim and Judy divorced in 1982, they remained constant and loving friends. In 1984, Jim married Nancy Morrison and welcomed her children, Michelle and Jamie Morrison into his family. Jim enjoyed a long career with the Department of Marine Resources as a Marine Patrol Officer serving the Southern York County area. During his tenure, he was priviledged to run the Department’s chase boat for then Vice-President George H.W. Bush in Kennebunkport, whenever he was in Maine. In 1990, he retired, and his long love of the sea, led him to earn his Captain’s License and eventually operating his fishing charter business out of Wells Harbor. Jim loved his retirement as it allowed him to enjoy his love of the sea and as well as time with his family. He will be remembered as a kind and loyal friend to many as well as a champion of those challenged in life. Jim was compassionate to the needs of others and was always willing to help out, whenever asked. He

FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked quesWLRQV LV ³:K\ VHQG ÀRZHUV WR D PHPRULDO service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money? Well nothing could be further from the truth.

was blessed with a quirky, sharp wit and unique sense of humor, which meant there was always laughter when Jim was around. Jim enjoyed get togethers with family and friends, and especially enjoyed his Monday “Poker Nights in the Clubhouse with many good friends throughout the years. Jim became a good cook gifting the family with great apple pies and, of course, the holiday tradition, lime jello mold, which will continue to be passed down to the family in honor of Grampy. Jim was a lover of animals, especially the many dogs who shared their life with him. His most beloved pet was a Westie he named “Rudder Jim and Rudder were attached at the hip and had the opportunity to be featured on the TV show “Animal Planet as well as be featured in the magazine, “Down East. We know Rudder has welcomed Dad home along with the many squirrels and raccoons that Jim rescued and rehabilitated into the wild. Jim loved his time spent with his family and grandchildren especially out on his boat, the Karen Ann. During the last years of his life, Jim was fortunate and happy to share his memories with his loving companion, Patricia Shaw, traveling abroad, to Florida, attending plays and movies and, of course, special times with family. On the eve of Jim’s passing, the Shaw cannon was shot off in salute of his ascent into heaven. Jim will be dearly loved and fondly remembered by all. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

Bank Employees Raise Over $8,200 for Charitable Causes

SANFORD SIS Bank is pleased with how well its “Casual for a Cause” jeans days were received with Bank employees. Throughout 2018, SIS hosted bimonthly jeans days to raise funds for local organizations and charities. Twice monthly on specific Fridays and Saturdays, Bank employees contributed $3-5 (or more) to wear jeans to work. As a result, employees collectively raised over $8,200 in support of 26 local organizations for the year. The Casual for a Cause jeans days are an SIS Bank tradition and something the employees look forward to participating in every year. Not only do Bank

staff get to take a day off from wearing their usual professional attire; they do so for a cause that matters. This past year’s list of designated charities include: Relay for Life, Save Our Shores-Maine, Go RED for Women, Sister’s Wish, Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation; Sanford Project Graduation 2018, Rolling Thunder’s Bowl-A-Thon for Veterans, MGhelpMe Gaited Horse Rescue, K9s on the Front Line, Safe Haven Humane Society, Safe Kids Maine, Cancer Care Center of York County and a host of other local and impactful organizations. “Everyone looks forward to the jeans days, especially know-

Maine Airbnb Hosts Earned $66 Million in 2018 AUGUSTA Airbnb, the world’s leading community driven hospitality company, announced recently that its Maine host community earned a total of approximately $66 million in supplemental income while welcoming approximately 425,000 guest arrivals to the state in 2018. This comes as Maine residents increasingly embrace the home sharing platform as an opportunity to earn supplemental income and make ends meet. There are now over 6,200 Maine hosts who share their homes via Airbnb, typically earning about $6,900 annually ing they are contributing to different worthy causes each time,” said SIS Bank President & CEO Blaine Boudreau. “We continue to be humbled by the generosity and the charitable spirit of our staff and thank them for another successful year of fundraising.” For a full list of organizations and donation amounts, ask a teller at one of your local SIS Bank branches or call us today.

in supplemental income. “2018 was another great year for Airbnb in Maine, with more local residents and small businesses able to benefit from the economic opportunities created by home sharing than ever before,” said Josh Meltzer, Head of Northeast Public Policy. “As we reflect on this past year and celebrate the beginning of a new one, we are proud to have played a small role in countless memories and cultural exchanges across Vacationland -- from summer trips to leaf peeping to the holiday season. We look forward to continuing to help

families across Maine earn extra income while allowing countless communities to enjoy the tourism economy in 2019.” In addition to the new income going into the pockets of Maine Airbnb hosts, the state is also generating new revenue through a tax agreement announced in 2017 that allows Airbnb to collect and remit applicable Maine taxes on behalf of its hosts. Earlier this year, Airbnb announced that it delivered $5.3 million in tax revenue to the state in the first year of that tax agreement.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, Since the latest upgrade to Firefox, all my drop down arrows have quit working. I mean the File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, and Help buttons are useless. I click on them and nothing drops down. I use this to copy and paste the recipes that I find that I like and now I am having to use the control c to copy. When I pasted them into my Microsoft Word, that too has stopped working. All the ribbons at the top do not open. I don’t know what has happened, but I am very upset about this. I deleted Firefox and reinstalled, but that doesn’t work. Nor did the restore to a previous point. I am very upset and thought maybe you could help. I do not know how to get in touch with Mozilla about this problem. Your help would be very much appreciated. Thank you, Donna Dear Donna, This does not sound like

a Mozilla Firefox problem, but a Windows problem, or possibly a hard drive problem. If the problem with the menus was only happening in Firefox, then I might think that was the problem, but since it is also happening in Word, that tells me it is not just one program. If it is only Firefox and Word with the problems, you might want to try the following steps, if that doesn’t work, then it is probably time to run some diagnostics on the computer to rule out hardware problems, and if no hardware problems are found, a clean install of Windows is the next step. But first, try the following steps and see if this fixes the problem: 1. Go to the Control Panel and uninstall both Firefox and Office. 2. Restart the computer (DO NOT skip this step, it is often the difference between this working or not working) 3. Install Firefox and Office again. If the steps above work,

you are all set, if not, you will need to figure out why it is not working, and probably need a clean install of Windows. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I love your website and appreciate all the help you give us. Many years ago you told how to do a quick shut down when I had XP. Now I have Windows 10 and it would not work. Can you tell me how to do a quick shutdown with it? Thank you so much, Carolyn Dear Carolyn, Here is how to create a shutdown shortcut in Windows 10: 1. Right-click on your desktop, point to “New” in the context menu and click on “Shortcut”. 2. In the shortcut dialog box that appears, you will need to type this exact command: Shutdown.exe -s -t 00 and click “Next”. 3. Type a name for your shortcut (Shutdown is a good name) and click “Finish”. Your shutdown shortcut will

have a generic icon, and if you want to, you can right click on the shortcut, click “Properties” in the context menu, then click the “Change Icon” button to select an icon. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Your column has provided me with a lot of good information over the years. Recently, there was a question of whether shutting down the computer was a good idea. My question is whether shutting off the surge protector where my computer and printer are plugged in would be a good idea when they are not in use. I’m a big supporter of saving on my utility bills and would appreciate your input. Thanks, Joni Dear Joni, I don’t see any problems with turning off the surge protector once your computer and printer are turned off. And it will conserve a small amount of electricity. If you want to protect your computer from

possible lightening strikes or power surges, however, you should not only turn off the surge strip, but unplug it from the wall as well. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, I love your column and have used your suggestions several times. Two days ago I downloaded the latest Windows update and the message came back: “Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine” MS offered to sell me a serial number, lol. Is this a scam or do you think Office Depot sold me a computer with a bogus copy of Windows 7? Why didn’t this show up earlier with all the other windows updates that I have downloaded in the last two years? Thanks, Arden Dear Arden, I don’t believe that Office Depot sold you a computer with a bogus copy of Windows See COMPUTERS page 38...
