Local Couple Wins Dream Wedding

Jacqueline Maude and Phillip Carter, the grand prize-winning couple, when they were 18.

By Timothy Gillis WELLS & OGUNQUIT Great things come to those who wait. That’s the lesson learned by a local couple, who were just announced winners of a $100,000 dream wedding. Since they were seventeen and shared an English class at Wells High School, Jacqueline Maude and Phillip Carter have always connected. The couple started dating then, and stayed together after graduation when she went to the University of New Hampshire and he joined the US Air Force. She started

teaching, and he got a job in the New Hampshire Air National Guard as an aircraft mechanic, completing four military tours. They stayed together, patiently, through all the distance and time. “We always planned on getting married, but we really wanted to build a future together before we did,” Maude said this week. They purchased a property last year, next to Brewed Awakenings, the family bakery which she took over, and had achieved the kind of future they wanted.

iPod Music Project Rocks On KENNEBUNK For the past four years, a teenage trio has been sharing their love of music with Kennebunk’s senior citizens. The project’s continued success, however, now requires that they teach younger students how it’s done. When Juli Ennis, Colby Ellis, and Jason Albaum were 8th grade classmates at the Middle School of the Kennebunks, they

created “Project Playback,” a community service endeavor at the Kennebunk Center for Health and Rehabilitation. They gathered refurbished iPods and created playlists of golden oldies for the clients there. They even personalized the song selections based on interviews with family and staff members. Then, they brought the devices and headphones to the center to share the music and memories. They were confident the music would be well received and were not surprised at how

emotional many became when hearing the old songs. What

the trio didn’t expect was the lasting impression the project

The couple got engaged this past Christmas Eve at the Lobster Trap Tree in Cape Porpoise. “He wanted to do it there,” Maude said. “It’s the perfect representation of our future together in Maine. It’s always been near and dear to me here, since I vacationed in a cottage on Atlantic Avenue with my grandparents.” They knew they wanted to marry each other, and here in southern Maine, but they had no idea their dream Maine wedding See WEDDING page 10... would have on them. “We split it half and half,” Albaum says. “Fifty percent is the therapeutic effect of the music, exciting them, bringing them back to their youth. The other half is the impact they have on us. It’s therapeutic for us as well. We’ve been able to make intergenerational connections through music.” They had come to help the senior citizens plug in and turn up, and were so moved by the experience that they kept coming back, week after week, year after year. Teachers’ Room Makeover Helps Lift Spirits ELIOT Faculty and staff at the Eliot Elementary School returned to work this past Monday to a bright and uplifting surprise. Members of PEEPs, or the Partnership of Eliot Elementary Parents, had spent the weekend renovating the teachers’ room—painting its walls with a sharp, mountain mural, cleaning furniture, and putting aesthetic touches on the redesign. Meredith Segit, Rebecca Henning, Megan Gamache, and Claudia Kaerner, all moms of EES students, worked on the mural, which was inspired by artwork by Kaerner, who had just painted her daughter’s room

with that same design. The mural was the jumping off point for the rest of the work. Ali Goodwin and Forrest Elliott of Haven & Homes came in to look at the mural and the space they had to work with, and then came back with a seemingly magical set of supplies for highlights and accents. “They brought in twinkle lights, mirrors, runners, a Relax sign, pillows, an oil diffuser… They took it to an entirely different level,” said Henning, who has known Goodwin since they were in kindergarten here together. Goodwin doesn’t have

Town House School Project Goes out to Bid

KENNEBUNKPORT Since Luverne Preble Tinkham’s impassioned plea in May of 2015 to the Kennebunkport Historical Society to save the Town House School, the Friends of Town House School—all members of the Kennebunkport Historical Society—have raised money to move forward with this renovation/rehabilitation project. The goal is to save the last remaining one-room schoolhouse in Kennebunkport. A Request for Proposals has been sent out to several local contractors to bid on the renova-

tion of this great, little treasure from 1900, based on a new implementation agreement between

the Kennebunkport Historical Society and the Friends of Town House School. This 118-year-old school on North Street at Town House Corners has provided many memories and will now continue to provide them. In 1900, the boys entered through one door and the girls yet another. ELIOT Seacoast Waldorf School announced that its three Odyssey of the Mind teams have earned a place in the Maine State Championships on April 7. “This is the first year we have entered teams into the Odyssey of the Mind regional competition and our teams earned 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes which qualified them to move on to States. We are thrilled! said school director Deirdre McEachern. “I don’t think any of us were expecting such success on our first time out. The students all worked very hard

on coming up with creative solutions to their challenges and had a wonderful time. The Seacoast Waldorf Middle School student teams will compete at Biddeford High School against other middle schoolers from across Maine in three categories: classics, vehicle, and structure. “Our kids did extremely well on both the long term projects as well as the spontaneous, day-of problems, said Erica Taylor, OM team coach. “We received wonderful feedback on the kids’ teamwork and creativity.

named Nobel High School’s 2018 Principal’s Award winner, the school announced this week. Rudis is the son of Robert and Mary Rudis of Berwick. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship. “During his time at Noble, Jarrod has served as Student Council president, National Honor Society president, French Honor Society president, a member of Project SEARCH (an early-college lecture series), and was a National History Day winner, said Adina Hunter, one of his teachers. “But these titles don’t fully capture who Jarrod is. He is one of the top five students I’ve worked with in my twelve-year career as a Gifted & Talented educator. It is rare in education to have a highly gifted student have such a strong work

ethic and well-developed social skills. Jarrod is one of these rare gems. He is one of the brightest and most conscientious students I’ve worked with. Earlier, Rudis was selected as the Maine Gifted & Talented Student of the Year. “I couldn’t think of a student more deserving, she said of the awards. His French teacher, Jennica Osborne, said Rudis is a natural leader while remaining humble. “He has become one of Noble’s finest voices and visionaries, and he is respected and loved by faculty and students alike, she said. “I enjoy his company and over the years we have developed a strong relationship based on respect, dialogue and friendship. He is genuinely interested and concerned about the welfare of those around him. Jarrod, Dean of Students Tyler Winsor, and other award winners and administrators will

Students Make History at Jewett House Museum

SOUTH BERWICK A new exhibition of student art work is opening at the Sarah One Jewett House Museum and Visitor Center. Historic New England presents “Make History, an exhibit featuring the work of thirtytwo Marshwood High School art students in Ceramics and Mixed Media. The show runs April 7 to May 19, with an opening recep-

tion on Thursday, April 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the site. Both the exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public. “Make History is the culmination of an educational collaboration between Historic New England and Marshwood High School in which students were inspired to create personal meanings from the Sarah Orne Jewett House story in the form of

visual interpretations. Students visited Sarah Orne Jewett House Museum, exploring rooms and collections, including works by Marcia Oakes Woodbury and Charles Woodbury, Sarah Wyman Whitman, and Celia Thaxter, to investigate the influence of Jewett’s surroundings on her work. One visit took the form of “classroom in the museum, as students selected a space in the house to study, sketch, or write. Back at Marshwood High School, the mixed media studio lesson challenged students to incorporate a variety of techniques and to use pattern in a unique way. Ceramics students were asked to create paper blueprints, in which all aspects of their intended works, from decorative details to structure and shape, were planned, prior to working in clay. The project was the conceived by Julia Einstein, an education program coordinator for Historic New England, and was inspired by the collaboration between Sarah Orne Jewett and Marcia Oakes Woodbury and Charles Woodbury in developing illustrations for a second edition of Jewett’s novel “Deephaven. “Everything about this project fits perfectly with my own philosophies as an edu-

cator, said Marshwood High School art teacher Jeff Vinciguerra. “This process has been a great way to shake up my routine and make meaningful connections between my classroom, the community, and local history. As someone interested in the local history we are fortunate to have well documented around here, I was thrilled to begin this process. I’ve noticed my students seem to appreciate the magnitude of this project and have been deeply engaged while building their ceramic objects and managing the various deadlines they are under. (Marshwood High School) Prin-

cipal Paul Mehlhorn exceeded my expectations by not only approving the cost of buses to transport students but also expressing an interest in the project becoming a purposeful part of the curriculum going forward. The feedback I have received from students has been extremely positive and I can see how this project has added significant value to my curriculum. Most importantly, the project was a hit with the students. “Integrating our town’s history with the present has been See HISTORY page 12...

Volunteer Wins National ACS Award

KENNEBUNK Peggy Belanger of Kennebunk, an oncology nurse navigator at Southern Maine Healthcare (now retired), was one of eight American Cancer Society volunteers from across the country to receive the Society’s Lane Adams Quality of Life Award. Although she received the news in early February, she said she is still buzzing from it. “I didn’t expect it at all. I was totally surprised. I was unaware that my colleagues and patients had even nominated me, and that the Maine affiliate of the American Cancer Soci-

ety had nominated me. Proud doesn’t even begin to describe it. I’m honored, and it’s very humbling,” she said, adding that the two days she spent in Dallas, where she was presented with the award, were amazing. “It just really makes you grateful to have had the opportunity to work with these patients. I got the award because of them, because of the work that needs to be done and because of the work I’ve done.” Now retired, Belanger still finds herself quite busy. She continues to work for the American Cancer Society and its action network. Soon she will join other

children in the school, but likes to give back to her alma mater. She donated two picnic tables to the school last year. Beachmere Inn donated chairs, and Henhouse Entertainment gave plants for the project. The crew kept a table and four chairs that were there, having them steam-cleaned. They certainly had their work cut out for them when they started it. “It was a nasty, depressing, pale white, with old leather couches, a couple of coffee tables—not a place I’d want to hang out,” Henning said of the teachers’ room “Before” photo. To get the work done in secret, the parents got keys to the school from Principal Maureen Goering, who said she was kept in the dark about the makeover plans. “I only asked that they not do any construction without a permit.” Her first impression when she walked in Monday? “I was speechless. They have reimagined themselves (as a parentteacher group). It’s not the Harper Valley PTA anymore.” Goering said. “They are great parents who do everything they can to support our school and they rock it. “Our number one priority is to do everything we can to create a safe and nurturing learning community for everybody, grownups as well as children. Anything that we can do to bolster a sense of community— that’s what we do.” PEEPs started off as an Eliot community-parent-teacher organization, according to Goering. Around five years ago, they decided to rebrand, made a new logo, became a non-profit and changed how they approached things—everything they do is focused on supporting the school and keeping the politics out of it. “The countless hours you all spent working over the weekend (with your children in tow) to make sure the surprise was ready for us on Monday morning speaks volumes about the PEEPs community,” wrote Stephanie Letourneau on the PEEPs Facebook page. “The thought and detail that went into bringing your special gift to fruition is mind blowing. I felt compelled to share these sentiments with you because I truly feel that the Eliot/PEEPs community is one in a million.” By Timothy Gillis

~ News ~ ...MUSIC from page 1 life after high school, they are expanding the project and adding live music performances at Atria Kennebunk, an assisted living facility. “Our residents enjoy music throughout all hours of their day and with the help of Project Playback, we are looking forward to the impact they will have on both the residents’ emotional and social wellbeing, said Kourtney Soucy, Atria’s Engage Life director. Albaum plays tenor sax and Ennis handles percussion in both their jazz trio and the school band. Colby plays trombone at school and keyboard for Project Playback. At Kennebunk High School, they play in the wind ensemble, or its honors level band. They also play in the pep band for the football team. The trio has worked collaboratively with United Way of York County for the past two years to keep the program in play after they graduate. They are working to build something that can be duplicated at other senior-living communities. (The organization also serves as Project Playback’s fiscal agent.) The group wants to make their project permanent and have taken on some new volunteers, working with the current crop of middle schoolers to find the right type. “Over the summer, United Way helped us recruit 8th graders through their activity coordinator, and showed us how to develop a volunteer recruitment process. It’s hard to find the right people to join the project. Not all 8th graders are the right fit for performing in nursing homes, Albaum said. “Our biggest goal is, once we leave high school, to have another group of students take over the project. Music has such a connection to our sense of who we are. We’d hate to have such an impactful thing just disappear after we are gone. By Timothy Gillis

Citizenship Website Gets Update NATIONWIDE This week, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services launched a pilot to test a redesigned processing times webpage that displays the data for all forms in an easier-to-read format and also tests a new way of collecting data and calculating the processing times for some forms. The pilot will test four forms using a new automated methodology for calculating processing times. The new webpage makes it easier for anyone to see approximately how long it will take USCIS to process a form, which will help users determine when it is necessary to contact USCIS to make an inquiry if their case is outside the normal processing time. For the four pilot forms, the information on the webpage reflects a new methodology for collecting and calculating processing times. The new methodology is automated, more accurate, and allows USCIS to post data on processing times within two weeks, compared to six weeks under the old methodology. The updated page displays processing times in a range for each form based on the date USCIS receives it. The low end of the range for pilot forms shows the time it takes to com-

plete 50 percent of cases, and the high end shows the time it takes to complete 93 percent of cases. The high end for the non-pilot forms will be adjusted by 30 percent above current cycle times to reflect the time it takes to complete a majority of the cases. Applicants, petitioners, and requestors can create an online account at uscis.gov/casestatus to track the status of their cases. They may make an “outside normal processing time case inquiry for any cases pending longer than the time listed for the high end of the range by submitting a service request online or calling the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283. USCIS will continue to The Weekly

They had so much fun making the video, it seemed to them that they had won already. So it was quite the frosting on the wedding cake when they heard that they had received the dream nuptial from Real Maine Weddings, based on the twominute video they made of why they wanted to get hitched in Ogunquit. “Now, there is a lot of plan-

We’re really happy to share this moment with family and friends.” This is the eighth year that Real Maine Weddings has given away a $100,000 wedding. Past contests have been held in Kennebunkport in 2013, York in 2016, and elsewhere in Maine. The couple will immedi-

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Junior High Singers in Honors Festival WELLS Thirteen Wells Junior High School students participated in the Southern Maine Middle School Honors Festival for 7th and 8th grade students earlier this month at South Portland High School. Students from about a dozen middle schools participated in this annual event that highlights talented junior high school singers. This festival for 6th grade singers and band members was held the following week. Those who wanted to attend this festival went to their first audition last October. The top scores in the auditions were accepted to sing in either the Soprano, Alto, or Baritone section.

Near the end of the year, they were provided music so that they could begin working with their music teachers to learn and practice the parts that they would be performing at the festival. When all the students came together on the festival’s first day, they teamed up with a guest conductor and accompanist to perfect the music. At this time, they also learned some new musical techniques. On the following day, they performed in public before a large audience with a concert band. “The students most enjoy being with other like-minded students who have a passion and a talent for music, said WJHS

music teacher and choral director Katie Mercier. “Being able to work together with other singers who have similar goals, ambitions, and talents is an extremely rewarding experience.â€? According to Mercier, students learn â€œâ€Ś a wealth of vocal techniques that they could bring back to use in their musical careers moving forward.â€? Those from WJHS who attended included (in alphabetical order) Delia Bailey, Isabella Bazata, Lucy Breton, Anavi Curtiss, Gretchen Graffam, Riley Hansen, Evyn Lally, Jackson Meagher, Aaron Patnaude, Hunter Roberts, Alaina Stivaletta, Tamia Tomlinson and Tiffany Vevmany.

Prison Provides Blueprint for School Success PORTLAND Telling a story of bold and relentless leadership in schools, “Everything I Know About School Reform I Learned in Prison (from Archway Publishing) follows author Michael McCarthy’s career as a school leader and describes the challenges, barriers, and occasional breakthroughs he experienced along the way. In this book, the author tackles the question: “Can you create a school that works for all kids and really mean it? “Everything I Know About School Reform I Learned in Prison shares the success story of King Middle

School in Portland, Maine. This book tracks how one school recreated itself to welcome and challenge all students without excuses. It is an inside look at the mistakes, trials, triumphs and hope faced by the school as a whole. The book highlights the importance of shared ideas among faculties and the significance of relentless and consistent leadership. Drawing from his personal and professional experiences, McCarthy presents the use of unorthodox and sometimes bold strategies to eliminate the negative practices and widely accepted myths about students and learning.

Concurrently, “Everything I Know About School Reform I Learned in Prison also serves as a challenge to teachers, parents and school administrators to work together for the betterment of the children. McCarthy spent 36 years as a successful middle school principal. During the last 28 of those years, he led King Middle School in Portland, Maine, from a school parents avoided to a school parents celebrated. Despite making radical and unpopular decisions, he was twice named Maine’s Principal of the Year. He was also awarded an honorary doctoral degree from the University of New England.

South Berwick Public Library Soldier & Stray Dog Save Each Other Craig Grossi and Fred the Afghan will visit the library and present a program on their story, about how Grossi met Fred and the two started an improbable journey together. In 2010, Sergeant Craig Grossi was doing intelligence work for Marine RECON —the most elite fighters in the Corps—in a remote part of Afghanistan. While on patrol, he spotted a young dog “with a big goofy head and little legs” who didn’t seem vicious or to run in a pack like most strays they’d encountered. After eating a piece of beef jerky Craig offered—against military regulations—the dog began to follow him. “Looks like you made a friend,” another Marine yelled. Grossi heard, “Looks like a ‘Fred.’” The name stuck, and a beautiful, life-changing friendship was forged. Fred not only stole Craig’s heart; he won over the RECON fighters who helped Craig smuggle the dog into heavily fortified Camp Leatherneck in a duffel bag—risking jail and Fred’s life. With the help of a crew of DHL workers, a sympathetic vet, and a military dog handler, Fred eventually made it to Craig’s family in Virginia. Months later, when Craig returned to the U.S., it was Fred’s turn to save the wounded Marine from Post-Traumatic Stress. Today, Craig and Fred are touching lives nationwide, from a swampy campground in a Louisiana State Park to the streets of Portland, Oregon, and everywhere in between. A poignant and inspiring tale of hope, resilience, and optimism, with a timeless message at its heart, that it is not what happens to us that matters, but how we respond to it, the story is a shining example

of the power of love to transform our hearts and our lives. Tuesday, April 3, at 7 p.m.

Maine: Purveyors of Originality PORTLAND The 2018 Governor’s Conference on Tourism will take place April 3 and 4 in Portland. This year’s program of speakers, workshops and breakout sessions will address critical issues for the growth of Maine tourism, with a focus on skills-building, workforce development, and tactics for expanding visitation throughout the state. “Maine’s tourism businesses and entrepreneurs showcase all that Maine offers visitors, and by doing so contribute not just to the growth of our tourism industry, but also to increasing awareness of our quality of life, said Governor Paul R. LePage. “It is essential for our continued growth that we let the world know that we are a great place to live, work, and operate a business. Maine’s annual tourism conference brings together approximately 400 industry businesses, organizations and stakeholders from across the state each year for an exchange of ideas and best practices to help build one of Maine’s most vital and valuable industries. The 2018 conference theme reflects the Maine brand value, “Originality, the core of the Maine Office of Tourism’s marketing program. The two-day conference will open with an afternoon of information sessions and skills-building workshops, using Portland as the conference campus with workshops at a variety of locations in addition to the conference home at the Holiday Inn by the Bay. The evening opening reception will take place at Bayside Bowl. STATEWIDE The Robbie Foundation is hosting an adventure day for kids of all ages and abilities. The aim is to give all children the opportunity to get to know each other and learn from each other regardless of their abilities. There are many typical children that never get to play

with a child with special needs and vice versa. Children with special needs all too often feel isolated and do not get to spend time with other children. The foundation seeks to create an environment of acceptance, awareness, tolerance, inclusion and individuality for all participants. For more than seven years,

SMHC Launches National Diabetes Prevention Program YORK COUNTY Southern Maine Health Care will begin offering the National Diabetes Prevention Program on April 24, with classes meeting at 655 Main Street in Saco. The year-long program is recognized by the CDC and has proven to help participants reduce their risk for developing type 2 diabetes through modest weight loss and increased physical activity. The National Diabetes Prevention Program is based on research led by the National Institutes of Health that found people with prediabetes who take part in a structured lifestyle change program can cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58 percent. According to the CDC, more than one out of three adults in the U.S. have prediabetes. Prediabetes is defined as having a blood glucose (sugar) level that is higher than normal but not high enough to be considered diabetes. Having prediabetes increases your chance of getting more serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The American Diabetes Association estimates that over 37 percent of Maine’s adult population has prediabetes. Without weight loss and moderate physical activity, 15 to 30 percent of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within five years. Type 2 diabetes can be pre-

vented or delayed with healthy lifestyle changes; the first step to preventing diabetes is to find out your risk. “If you have a family history of type 2 diabetes, are carrying extra weight, and get little or no physical activity, you could be at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, said SMHC Family Nurse Practitioner Louise Beaulieu. “Age also plays a role, so if you are over 45 and have more than one of these risk factors, you should talk to your provider about getting screened for diabetes. In order to qualify for the National Diabetes Prevention Program, participants must be at least 18 years of age, determined “overweight by a body mass index equal to or greater than 25, and be diagnosed with prediabetes via blood work, a previous diagnosis of gestational diabetes, or by a qualifying risk score from a diabetes risk assessment test. Participants do not need a doctor’s referral to register for the program. The hour-long classes will meet weekly on Tuesday nights from 5 to 6 p.m. for the first 16 weeks, then bi-monthly or monthly for the remainder of the year. For more information about the program, contact the MaineHealth Prevention Program at 207-661-7294 or visit mainehealth.org/preventdiabetes to register.

Health & Fitness New Push to Fight ‘Silent Epidemic’ NATIONWIDE The NASH Education Program launched earlier this month in the United States, with a focus on bringing awareness to a little-known, asymptomatic disease estimated to affect more than 25 million Americans and about 12 percent of adults in developed countries. NASH, or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, is a metabolic disease characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver, along with inflammation and the degeneration of liver cells. In too many cases, it leads to liver transplants and liver cancer. It afflicts a growing number of children and teenagers, and particularly strikes the Hispanic population. The NASH Education Program, an independent legal entity and a non-partisan initiative, includes an independent scientific committee, made up of EU and US hepatologoists and diabetologists, dedicated to raising awareness of this devastating disease. Through the production and dissemination of educational

videos, digital content and research conducted by the NASH Global Health Observatory, The NASH Education Program seeks to build a non-partisan coalition to inform and equip all healthcare sectors to proactively solve this public health crisis. To mark the launch of The NASH Education Program in the United States, a webinar was held last week, including expert perspective from leading hepatologists and diabetologists in the field, a NASH patient who shared her experience with this complex disease, and a leader in liver patient advocacy. They also released results of their new patient “Health Unlocked survey, via the British Liver Trust & the Fatty Liver Foundation communities in partnership with Health Unlocked. This important survey contains new data on patients’ awareness of the disease, feelings on the need for more information on NASH, and the ties to related health conditions patients have, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. In related news, The NASH Education Program will organize the first International

NASH Day, slated for June 12, in close to 20 cities across the globe. A large coalition of physicians, scientists, patients and stakeholders will come together for a day of action to bring awareness to the next worldwide public health crisis, and to rally behind efforts to combat and cure NASH, a metabolic disease characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver, along with inflammation and the degeneration of liver cells. The disease is associated with long-term risk of progression into diminished liver functionality, leading to non-alcoholic cirrhosis, liver insufficiency and possibly even liver cancer. It also is associ-

ated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. Its rise is believed to be connected to the type 2 diabetes and obesity epidemics that are growing globally. The NASH Education Program defines and drives initiatives in collaboration with an independent scientific committee composed of four international key opinion leaders. The scientific committee leaders are wellknown and respected in both hepatic and metabolic disease circles, with a strong presence in the United States as well as in Europe. and consumer trends, will talk about how to market to and meet the needs of a diverse customer base through customized service and targeted outreach. Conference breakout sessions will share insights from Maine businesses that are successfully leveraging existing assets and events to attract a wider audience. “Our goal is to strengthen

our industry partners and help build their success by providing tools and strategies that work in today’s competitive tourism market, said Steve Lyons, director of the Maine Office of Tourism. “Maine is a world-class destination, with so much to offer to visitors. Working together, we can continue to grow and prosper. More information and registration is available at www. MaineTourismConference.com.

~ Where To Dine ~ Make Mealtime More Eco-Friendly

An eco-friendly lifestyle is anything but selfless, as such a way of life can pay both immediate and long-term dividends, helping men and women in the present day while also contributing to healthier futures for generations to come. As environmentalists and eco-friendly ordinary Joes no doubt already know, there are myriad ways to go green. Even mealtime at home can be made considerably more eco-friendly

10% OFF

with relatively little effort. • Stop handwashing dishes. Men and women who dread having to hand wash their dishes after a nice meal have an ally in science. A study from researchers in Europe found that people who handwashed place settings for 12 people used as much as 27 gallons of water, while washing the same amount of place settings in a dishwasher required just four gallons of water. So instead of standing over a sink

and washing dishes by hand each night, men and women can simply load up the dishwasher, making sure only to run it when it’s full so even less water is wasted. • Avoid the stove when possible. Empty nesters, couples without children or single men and women who want to save energy come mealtime can use toaster ovens in lieu of traditional stoves when preparing small meals. According to EnergyStarŽ, toaster ovens consume between one-third to one-half the amount of energy as conventional electric ovens when cooking small meals, making them a far more eco-friendly option for men and women accustomed who typically cook small meals

for one or two people. • Shop with reusable shopping bags. Cooks know that great meals begin at the grocery store, so there’s no reason why eco-friendly cooking cannot begin there as well. Estimates suggest that as many as 100 billion plastic bags are used in the United States alone each year. EnvironmentMassachusetts reports that such bags are used for an average of 12 minutes, even though their life expectancy is as high as 1,000 years. By relying on reusable cloth shopping bags instead of single-use plastic bags, shoppers can dramatically reduce the carbon footprint of cooking their own meals. • Recycle materials. Glass jars, plastic butter tubs, milk car-

tons, and other items necessary to prepare meals at home are all recyclable. Many local governments have weekly if not biweekly pickups of recyclable materials, making it easier than ever to ensure these items are given new life after being used. Men and women who reside in areas without such pickups can go it alone, collecting recyclable materials and periodically transporting them to nearby recycling centers. Mealtime provides a host of opportunities for eco-conscious men and women to embrace practices that protect the planet. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, Is it possible at this point in time to return to a previous version of Windows? I upgraded from Windows 7 about 6 months ago. What I have read on line is that Microsoft has made it impossible. Also it seems to be impossible to stop “automatic” updates. Do you know if this is true in both instances? Thank you Again, Celeste

of Windows 7. This is something that I occasionally do for my customers, but I don’t recommend it. You are going to have to upgrade to Windows 10 eventually, and it is more secure than Windows 7. As for stopping automatic updates, you can stop some, but not all. Many updates are important to the security of your computer, and need to be done to maintain the security of Windows 10. Elizabeth

Dear Celeste, Windows 10 only keeps the files necessary for going back to the previous operating system for 30 days. After that, the only way to go back is to back up your data files, erase the computer and start over with a clean install

Please help. Thank you, Michael Dear Michael, I think you are talking about the control center. You access it by swiping up from the bottom of the screen on your iPad or iPhone. I use my control center all the time to quickly access my flashlight and my camera. Here is how you can customize it. From your home screen, tap on “Settings” In the settings app, tap on “Control Center”. The first setting controls if you can access the control center while you have an app open. If it is turned off, you can only access it from the lock screen or the home screen. Turn it on if you want to be able to access it while using an app. To add or remove apps from the control center, tap “Customize Controls”. The top section of the list of apps are already included in your control center. Tap the red circle,

then tap the button that says, “Remove” if you don’t want it in your control center. The next section has apps that you can add to your control center. Just tap the green dot with the plus sign to add one or more. Once you have added or removed all the apps you want, you can change the order that they appear in your control center by dragging the 3 little lines to the right of each icon either up or down. I hope this helps, Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Please help an old lady. I am trying to install adobe reader with no luck. The bottom line seems to ‘acro read 51 not found.’ I have no idea what that is or means. Please advise, blessings Peg Dear Peg, I don’t have an answer for that specific error message, and without taking a look at the computer to see what is going on, I can’t tell you exactly what is wrong, but I do have a few suggestions for you. 1. Try uninstalling all instances of adobe reader, then restart the computer before trying to re-install the program. 2. Try downloading the program again. Make sure you are downloading it directly from adobe.com. 3. Bring your computer to your local computer repair shop (like mine) for a tune-up and make sure you mention that you need to have adobe reader installed. I usually make sure apps like adobe reader and java are updated when I do a tune-up.

I also make sure Windows updates are installed. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I Love your newsletter. I have a question, on something I have never run into before. I keep getting this message that says low disk space. This in referring to my D drive, I have restored the computer to factory, and it made no difference. Is there any way I can correct this? Thank you so much for your many years of help. Miriam Dear Miriam, I am going to take a guess here since I can’t actually see your computer and how it is set up. On most computers, the D: drive is either a CD or DVD drive, or a section of your hard drive that contains your recovery files. If the D: drive is indeed a recovery partition, it is just big enough to hold your recovery files, and nothing else. When I get computers in the shop because they are getting the same message as you are getting, it is usually because they are trying to store files, or do a backup to the D: drive. If that is the case for you, what you need to do is save your files on the C: drive, and make sure your backup program is backing up to an external drive, not the D: drive. YORK Miss Potter is a sweet but independent little girl. She doesn’t like to be picked up but loves to hang out with her foster mom and follows her from room to room. Out of the blue, she will show her gratitude and rub up against her leg. One of Miss Potter’s favorite past times is to perch in a window and watch the birds. She seems to shy away from other cats but may do well with a friendly, laid-back kitty. Dogs would probably scare her. Older kids would be fine as long as they don’t want to pick her up and carry her around. Miss Potter is a beautiful kitty who will blossom in a quiet, caring home. If you would like more information about Miss Potter, contact Voice for Animals at in2catz@gmail.com.

Hometown Wrestler Grabs Third Award WELLS Michael Curtis, of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA, has earned recognition for the third year in a row from the New England Wrestling Association. He collected another honorable mention at the 197/lb category and finished the season with 27 wins, 10 defeats, and had 12 pins. Curtis’s teammates also pinned down some high praise. Brendan Marion was tabbed as the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Co-Rookie of the Year while head coach Steve Hall ‘87 took home the association’s Coach of the Year award. Tyler Marsh added to the Crimson and Gray honors by being selected the All-NEWA first team while six others drew honorable mention praise from the conference and 13 were named to the all-academic team. Marion had an outstanding freshmen year going 26-6 and finishing fifth at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship. The 165-pounder helped lead the Engineers to a dual meet record of 18-4, their best since 1994. WPI finished third at the NEWA Duals and second at the Northeast Regional. Marion was

the RIT Invitational Champion, the NEWA Duals Outstanding Wrestler, and was also named a Scholar All-American with a 3.52 GPA in Aerospace Engineering. He shared top-rookie billing with Southern Maine’s Austin Shorey and was named to the All-Rookie team along with Mike Ilic, who was above .500 with six pins, at 174. Hall was selected the NEWA Coach of the Year after winning the NCAA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year award last month. Since that accolade, the Crimson and Gray, bolstered by seven regional place winners, collected a second place finish at the 17-team regional tournament and Marsh represented the team at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships. WPI also boasted four Scholar All-Americans. Marsh, a mechanical engineering major and repeat NWCA Scholar All-American, finished second at 157 pounds at the NCAA Northeast regionals and concluded the campaign with a 31-5 record and a teambest 13 pins. The sophomore garnered co-rookie and All-NEWA second team honors a year ago. Austin Shrewsbury, a

KENNEBUNK As the baseball season opens, Carl Johnson, who covers the Red Sox for the Biddeford Journal Tribune, will be at the Kennebunk Free Library on Wednesday, April 4, at 6 p.m. to talk baseball and introduce his latest book, “Life After Big Papi. The book analyzes the Red Sox’s future without the second teamer last season, garnered his second honorable mention nod at 285 (29-8, 6 pins). Dan Wensley and Stephen Jendritz were repeat selections at 184 (27-9, 3 pins) and 133 (29-10, 5 pins), respectively. Ben Zogby earned his first at 125 (20-9, 5 pins) as did Marion at 165. Academically, the Engineers were 11th nationally, and fourth in the region, with a 3.49 GPA. The group was led by national honorees Marsh, Zogby, Chase Lind at 165 and Marion. In addition to Marsh, Zogby and Lind, repeat regional selections featured Curtis, Nick Day, Andrew Ellis, Jendritz, Pete Nash, Jack Nigro, Wensley and Tyler Wilson. Marion and Jake Smith represented the Class of 2021. To make Academic All-NEWA a wrestler must have been a major contributor to the team and have over a 3.2 GPA.

greatest designated hitter of all time. The Red Sox home opener at Fenway Park is the next day. The book relives the Red Sox’s 2016 season and follows them through the 2017 season when they won their second consecutive Division Championship—the first one without Papi—and into the 2018 season just as it begins. See why Red Sox fans have reason to be optimistic about the 2018 season. Johnson will also have copies of his popular series “The Baseball Buff’s Bathroom Books, Volumes 1-3, and his other Red Sox books available

for signing and personalization. His previous visits to the library have been popular and generated large audiences and much interest. Come in for an interesting baseball talk and the chance for a lively discussion about the Red Sox and baseball in general with this well known local baseball historian and author. This program is free and wheelchair accessible. The Kennebunk Free Library is located at 112 Main Street in Kennebunk. For more information, call 207985-2173 or email kfl@kennebunk.lib.me.us.

~ News ~ amendments and relieve compaction that likely occurred from freezing temps and snow pressure. Tilling also helps with drainage and oxygen delivery to roots. The DIY Network suggests turning over soil at a depth of 12 inches to work the soil—about the length of a shovel spade. However, the resource Earth Easy says that existing garden beds have a complex soil ecosystem and simply top-dressing with compost or manure can be enough preparation for planting. Gardeners can experiment with the methods that work best for their gardens. Nutrition: Testing the pH and the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often can benefit from the

and experienced attorneys from across the state. Mr. Short was one of the dozens of applicants the Committee assessed for Senate-confirmed vacancies in Maine. The Marshals Service is the enforcement arm of the federal courts, involved in virtually every federal law enforcement initiative. Presidentially appointed U.S. Marshals direct the activities of 94 districts— one for each federal judicial district. The duties of the U.S. Marshals Service include protecting the federal judiciary, apprehending federal fugitives, managing and selling seized assets acquired by criminals through illegal activities, housing and transporting federal prisoners, and operating the Witness Security Program. Short’s nomination requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

Short has led a number of initiatives to enhance community safety, such as the Zero Tolerance Domestic Violence Policy, which established partnerships between the Maine State Police Criminal Investigative Division, prosecutors, advocacy groups, and local leaders to protect victims. He also organized Hope for the Seacoast, an innovative effort to help southern Maine and northern New Hampshire address the opioid crisis by bringing law enforcement and the community together. As the senior Republican member of Maine’s congressional delegation, Senator Collins established an eightmember Federal Appointments Advisory Committee to evaluate applicants for federal positions. riety of plants in their gardens. Such an approach requires taking inventory of the type of soil in one’s garden and making the necessary modifications so that the types of vegetables, herbs, shrubs, or flowers that will be planted can grow in strongly. In fact, according to the plant company Proven Winners, the most important step to developing good roots is preparing the soil. Take a sample of the soil and examine it to see what is present. If the soil is too full of clay, too sandy, too dense, or too loose, that can lead to problems where plants cannot grow in strong. Work with a garden center to add the right soil amendments to make a rich soil. This may include organic compost or manure, which will also add nutrients to the soil. Cultivation: Cultivating the soil can involve different steps. Removal of weeds, errant rocks, roots, and other items will help prepare the soil. Mother Earth News suggests working on garden soil when the soil is damp but never wet; otherwise, garden soil can become messy and clumpy. Use a digging fork or shovel to lightly turn the soil when it’s mostly dry. Gentle tillings also can open up the soil to incorporate the nutritional

addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed. Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth and preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply. Preparing garden beds takes some effort initially, but can be well worth the work when plants flourish throughout the growing season.
