Habitat for Humanity Builds Home for Retired Combat Vet KENNEBUNKPORT Construction has begun on Habitat for Humanity York County’s Veterans Build in Kennebunkport. The new home is being constructed for the Holbrook Family, composed for Waylon, a medically retired combat veteran, his wife Nicole, and their two young sons. The property for the Veterans Build was donated to HFHYC by the town on Kennebunkport, and the build’s honorary chair is President George H.W. Bush. The home will be the product of collaboration between local veterans’ groups, individual donor
support, foundations, volunteers and local businesses. HFHYC has partnered with Steadfast Homes, of York to complete the exterior framing
of the home. “We typically have volunteers complete the framing of the home, said Executive Director Amy Nucci, “However it was important for us to move the
project along through the late winter, and the best way to get the home closed in was to work with a builder. Steadfast Homes has helped us make great progress in a short amount of time, and our volunteers are looking forward to taking over. As future homeowners, Waylon and Nicole will be working alongside volunteers to contribute “sweat equity to the build. All Habitat for Humanity York County home buyer complete 400 hours of “sweat equity by working on the construction of their home and on other Habitat for Humanity projects. The
family will purchase the home through an interest free mortgage which is recycled to support HFHYC’s affordable housing initiatives. In addition to its home building program, HFHYC runs Keep York County Warm! a weatherization program which serve low income Habitat weatherization teams have completed over 70 projects throughout the county for low-income families. Volunteers build and install custom storm windows and seal cracks, holes and gaps around See HOME page 2...

Actress Supports Wells Elementary School Classroom’s Unique Tech Request
WELLS Wells Elementary School Technology teacher Marty Cryer received a donation from actress and Portland native, Anna Kendrick (The Twilight Saga, Up in the Air) as part of the DonorsChoose #BestSchoolDay crowd-funding campaign. Kendrick donated $570 for the purchase of a hive of 6 Bee-Bots or computer coding robots and accessories for Cryer’s 4th grade classroom at Wells Elementary School. At the same time, Kendrick chose to fund 30 other school projects at schools in Maine as part of a flash mob of 58 celebrities, athletes and philanthropists
who paid out a combined total of $14 million in a day to fund half of all educational projects from 11,000 classrooms listed on DonorsChoose, (www.donorschoose.org) an educational crowd-funding organization. Although Cryer had previously raised $270 for this purchase from friends, relatives and visitors to her Facebook page, she still lacked hundreds more. So, like many other educators these days, Cryer turned to the Internet and listed her request on DonorsChoose, which prominently states on its website, “Support a classroom. Build a future. “Students absolutely love coding, commented Cryer.

The robots are cute and a lot of fun to use. Students learn so much, but don’t even realize it! Along with the Bee-Bots, Cryer’s classroom will receive a carrying case and a charging pod for all six units. For those not familiar with the concept, a “Bee-Bot is an exciting new robot designed for use by young children. This color-
ful, easy-to-operate, and friendly little robot is a perfect tool for teaching sequencing, estimation, problem-solving, and just having fun! (source: www.beebot.us.) “Computer coding requires students to use many math, reading, writing, and high level problem-solving and thinking skills all at the same time, summed up Cryer. “Combining coding with robotics takes students even further.

This year Carney celebrated his 30th anniversary as a member of the Maine Restaurant Association Board of Directors having served as the Maine Restaurant Association chairman in 1994-1996. students through Maine’s technical schools, establishing a legacy that will serve Maine’s hospitality industry for years to come. The 2016 Restaurateur of the Year Award was shared by the Geaghan Family of Bangor’s Geaghan Pub & Craft Brewery. Brothers Pat , Larry and Peter along with Larry’s son Andrew, today run the restaurant John and Arline Geaghan opened in 1975. An integral part of the economy of the greater Bangor area for the past five decades, Geaghan’s Pub has long been a cornerstone of its community employing generations of Mainers over the years. In 2011 the Geaghans added a successful craft brewery venture to the family business which has invigorated their brand and Maine’s craft brewing scene. Krista Cole, owner of Sur Lie in Portland received the association’s Rising Star Award. Established to recognize relative newcomers to the industry and the association, the Rising Star Award acknowledges restaurant professionals for their early achievements in the restaurant business. Cole, along with business partner Antonio Alviar, first opened the doors of their tapasstyle restaurant in September of 2014. Ms. Cole is deeply committed to the greater Portland area
which is apparent in her community outreach with a variety of local organizations in the city. Rounding out this year’s slate of awardees was the law firm of Norman Hanson DeTroy with offices in Portland and Lewiston who received the association’s Allied Member of the Year Award. Attorney David Herzer has been especially involved with the association since his firm joined the ranks of allied membership offering invaluable legal advice to both the association itself as well as its members. With expertise in a broad variety of business-related disciplines, Norman Hanson DeTroy has positioned itself as a law firm committed to Maine’s hospitality industry. Attorney Adrian Kendall and Attorney Darya Zappia were on the law firm slate. In speaking of the award recipients association President and CEO, Greg Dugal said, “Our goal is to recognize restaurant professionals who give back to their community, serve as mentors to others, go above and beyond in serving their customers, and make a positive contribution to our industry. We’re privileged to honor these individuals in a manner befitting their accomplishments through the generous support of our event sponsors.

~ News ~ Task Force Outlines Maine’s Strategy Against Budworm STATEWIDE Gov. Paul R. LePage and the Maine Spruce Budworm Task Force today released recommendations about how to respond to the upcoming spruce budworm infestation. “Coming Spruce Budworm Outbreak: Initial Risk Assessment and Preparation & Response Recommendations for Maine’s Forestry Community and other materials are available at sprucebudwormmaine.org. “We are on the verge of another spruce budworm epidemic and our goal is to lessen its damage, Gov. Paul LePage said at a news conference in the Cabinet room. The eastern spruce budworm is believed to be the most damaging forest insect in Maine and North America. Outbreaks kill balsam fir and spruce trees every 30 to 60 years. The Province of Quebec has been mapping defoliation from this pest for more than a decade. In 2015, 15.6 million acres of Quebec’s forests were defoliated. Significant defoliation occurred south of the St. Lawrence Seaway. The infestation already has spread into New Brunswick. “Severe defoliation is within 50 miles of Maine’s border, said Dave Struble, state entomologist. “We are at the start of an outbreak. We don’t know how bad it will be or exactly where, but we are seeing a build-up of budworm populations here. The budworm task force
was formed in 2013 to determine the economic and ecological effects another outbreak might have on the state and a strategy to minimize those effects. Leading the collaborative effort are Robert Wagner, director of the Cooperative Forestry Research Unit (CFRU) at UMaine; Patrick Strauch, executive director of the Maine Forest Products Council, and Doug Denico, director of the Maine Forest Service. Task force teams, composed of leading experts on budworm and Maine's forest resources, focused on wood supply and economic impacts; monitoring and protection; forest management; policy, regulatory and funding; wildlife habitat; communications and outreach; and research priorities. A draft report of their findings was released for public review in November 2014 and presented to municipalities, environmental groups, the legislature, logging contractors and economic development consortiums. “It’s like having a hurricane moving toward us from offshore, Wagner said. “We know it is there, how it behaves and the kind of damage it can do. We can hope that it misses us, but if we don’t prepare for the worst, shame on us. The report includes about 70 recommendations on preparing for the outbreak, including increasing monitoring efforts, applying pesticides where appropriate, changing forest
management strategies such as harvesting, and seeking ways to pre-salvage trees that likely would be lost. “The budworm threat remains the same, but a lot of other things have changed, Strauch said. “Our industry is governed by the Forest Practices Act now; pesticides are highly regulated and far more expensive, and there’s much less state and federal funding available. So the landowner community will need to figure out the best path forward. This report provides a framework to help landowners make good decisions. Denico, who has vivid memories of the last infestation, said he and other members of the task force are determined that this outbreak won’t take the state by surprise as the last one did. By 1975, not only Maine, but

Kittery First to be Incorporated
KITTERY Very few towns in the United States have the honor of being the first one incorporated in their state. Kittery, incorporated in 1647, has that honor for the great state of Maine. For over 300 years, this small seaside town has not deviated far
from its shipbuilding roots. Like many towns of its day, Kittery was founded by a few prominent families whose presence is visible to this day. The rich architecture created by these people, coupled with various intriguing stories of the area, make for a fascinating visual tour of the past. Kittery’s

to Maine's own William Pitt Fessenden), the 14th Amendment granted citizenship and equal civil and legal rights to African Americans and slaves who had been emancipated after the American Civil War, including them under the umbrella phrase "all persons born or naturalized in the United States." As detailed by the Maine Humanities Council, the 14th Amendment laid the groundwork for many of our most valued and debated rights. Some of the Supreme Court's most famous and influential cases have hinged on the justices' interpretation of this amendment, including Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), Brown v. Board of Education (1954), Loving v. Virginia (1967), and Obergefell v. Hodges (2015). Projects may be entirely new, or build on existing activities. Now several times a day a message to buy the full version appears on my screen and the only way to get rid of it is to restart my computer. I’m frustrated and ready to get rid of AVG and go back to Webroot, which has served me well for many years. It seems to me that if this optimization program isn’t from AVG, that AVG should have protected me from it. Can you give me any insight here? Teri Dear Teri, It sounds like you have downloaded the trial of AVG Tune-up. If you want to get rid of it, and the prompts to purchase it, just follow these directions. 1. Open the Control Panel (right-click on the start button, click on “Control Panel) 2. Under “Programs click on “Uninstall a Program or click on “Programs and Features. 3. Click on the program you want to get rid of, then click “Uninstall in the menu bar. or right-click on the program and click “Uninstall/change in the context menu. 4. When the program has finished uninstalling, restart your computer and the unwanted program will be gone. the great work, Jim Dear Jim, Unfortunately, I can’t tell you how to fix eudora, it has been abandoned and is no longer being updated. I can only give you the best available alternative which would be Mozilla Thunderbird at www. mozilla.org/en-US/thunder bird/. Thunderbird is a free, open source email program. I have found that it is easy to setup, easy to use, and it has the features and abilities that most people are looking for in a local email program. In addition to the built in features, Thunderbird has add-ons available that provide features like calendars and mail merge. I have found that Thunderbird has more features and is easier to use than any of the email apps that come with recent versions of Windows. It is a great replacement for Outlook Express, and far easier to use and more powerful than the Windows 10 mail app. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, One of the main reasons that I have not upgraded to W10 is that I’ve been told it no longer has the snipping tool! I use that tool nearly daily and have no intentions of giving it up without a fight!! If it is included in W10, how do you find/access it?
Thanks for your help and this great newsletter, G Dear G, Good news!! The snipping tool is included with Windows 10. Here is how you would access it: 1. Click on the start menu icon or tap the start menu key on your keyboard. 2. When the start menu opens, don’t click on it, just start typing “Snipping Tool and it will appear at the top of your start menu. 3. Click on the snipping tool icon, or if it is at the top of the menu, just press the “Enter key on your keyboard. 4. If you want to keep the snipping tool on your taskbar for easy access, just right click on the Snipping tool icon on your taskbar, and click “Pin To Taskbar in the context menu. Elizabeth
on this arrow, it either expands or minimizes the ribbon (what you referred to as a toolbar). If your toolbar is not displayed, click on this arrow to display it. If you want to hide the toolbar, click again. I’m guessing that you accidentally clicked on this arrow when your toolbar disap-

Dear Computer Lady, I was typing in Word Pad and my tool bar disappeared. Can you please tell me how to get it back. Thank you so much, Barb Dear Barb, Your toolbar will be simple to get back once you know how it disappeared. This is my best guess how that happened. In WordPad (which is included in every version of Windows) there is a small arrow in the upper-right hand corner (just below the X that you use to close the window) If you click

Author of “Waking Up White, Gives Talk in South Berwick SOUTH BERWICK Author of the book “Waking Up White, Debby Irving, racial justice educator, will visit Berwick Academy on Monday, April 4 at 7 p.m. In the talk, titled “I’m a good person, isn’t that enough, Irving will share stories and lessons from her own life to explore how those experiences shaped and changed her belief system on race. Copies of Irving's book will be for sale at the event and she will conclude with a book signing. The event is free and open to the public and will be held in the Patricia Baldwin Whipple Art Center Theater at Berwick Academy, 31 Academy Street, South Berwick. RSVP to 207384-2164 or online at http://bit. ly/1LOE3it. “Waking Up White is the book Debby Irving wishes someone had handed her decades ago. By sharing her sometimes cringe-worthy struggle to understand racism and racial tensions, she offers a fresh perspective on bias, stereotypes, manners, and tolerance. As she unpacks her own long-held beliefs about colorblindness, being a good person and wanting to help people of color, she reveals how each of these well-intentioned mindsets actually perpetuated her illconceived ideas about race. She
also explains why and how she’s changed the way she talks about racism, works in racially mixed groups, and understands the racial justice. “When I finally came to understand the way racism worked,â€? Irving explains, “I spent a lot of time thinking about what might have enlightened me earlier. I decided it wouldn’t have been an academic book, an essay, or a book from the perspective of a person of color ‌ it would have been another white person describing their own awakening, with some humor, poignancy and drama in the mix. What I needed was a memoir so irresistible that I would have read it even if racism weren’t on my mind.â€?
additional details are available from Membership Chairperson, Judith Kinsman by emailing her at judithkinsman@gmail.com or calling her at 207-229-9659. BUSINESS & FINANCE Gas Prices May Climb Above $2 for First Time in 2016
Pump prices have climbed higher for two straight weeks, and the national average price of gas may soon climb above $2 per gallon for the first time this year. Gas prices have increased largely due to seasonal increases in fuel demand and reduced production as some refineries conduct maintenance. Today’s aver-
age price of $1.98 per gallon is a the highest daily mark since January, and drivers are paying a nickel more per gallon than a week ago and 27 cents more per than a month ago. Despite retail averages rising, consumers continue to benefit from yearly savings and prices remain 44 cents per gallon cheaper than a year ago. Here is a look at local gas
prices: Vermont’s current price is $1.96 per gallon, which is two cents more than one week ago, and 54 cents lower than one year ago. New Hampshire’s current price is $1.86 per gallon, which is five cents higher than one week ago and 49 cents lower than one year ago. Maine’s current price is

which is more expensive to produce, but mandated due to the fact that it is causes less air pollution at warmer temperatures. These factors typically lead to higher gas prices this time of year and have helped push prices higher in recent weeks. For the second consecutive week, California ($2.68) leads the nation with the highest average price for retail gasoline. Consumers in the Golden State are paying 13 cents per gallon more than second-place Hawaii ($2.55), and gas prices could move higher in the near term due to refinery issues. Nevada ($2.32), Washington ($2.24) and Alaska ($2.22) round out the top five most expensive markets. The nation’s least expensive market for retail gasoline is New Jersey ($1.73), which is also the only state with an average price below See GAS page 17...

Massachusetts current price is $1.89 per gallon, which is five cents higher than one week ago and 49 cents lower than one year ago Gas prices tend to reach the highest levels of the year in the spring before the summer driving season. As the weather turns warmer and days grow longer, people tend to drive more, which results in increased demand. Many families also take spring break road trips this time of year, which means they may use more gasoline than normal. This increase in demand comes at the same time that many refineries conduct maintenance to prepare equipment for the busy summer driving season, which leads to a temporary decline in fuel production. In addition, refineries also begin to transition to summer-blend gasoline,

BUSINESS & FINANCE 6th Annual York County Regional Job Fair YORK The York County Regional Job Fair will be held on Friday, April 8, from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at the Nasson Community Center, 457 Main Street, Springvale. ...GAS from page 16 $1.75 per gallon. For the first time in 13 weeks, the U.S. oil rig count increased, which raises the possibility of continued strong production in the United States despite relatively low crude oil prices. Both Brent and West Texas Intermediate crude oil closed last week with gains, but each benchmark moved lower on Friday as oversupply concerns again come into focus. Global oil prices are expected to continue to move in response to ongoing discussions by some of the world’s top producers to potentially freeze production, which could be finalized at a meeting scheduled for April 17. The U.S. dollar is also in focus after posting its largest two-day loss in value since 2009. All eyes are on the Federal Reserve to see if corrective action is taken to help boost its value. A weaker dollar makes oil relatively less expensive for investors holding other currencies, which could help offset some of the market’s losses. Motorists can find current gas prices along their route with the free AAA Mobile app for iPhone, iPad and Android. Learn more at AAA.com/mobile.

Spring is here, so it’s time to think about the outdoors and proper protection against ticks. Maine had 1,171 cases of Lyme disease reported in 2015. May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month and we want to remind you the importance of daily tick checks and encourage the “tick watch prevention strategy. Ticks are primarily active in warmer months. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that is caused by a bite from an infected deer tick (Ixodes scapularis). In Maine, Lyme disease is most common in adults 65 and over and children between the ages of 5 and 15, but anyone can get the disease. Individuals who work or play outside are more likely to be exposed to ticks. The most common and visible symptom of Lyme disease is a red bulls-eye rash that grows and appears within 3-30 days of exposure. Other symp-

toms may include fevers, and joint or muscle pain. Lyme disease is treatable and most individuals recover completely with a proper drugs. However, the easiest way to avoid the disease is prevention, using “No Ticks 4 ME: 1) Use caution in tick infested areas; 2) Wear protective clothing; 3) Use an EPA approved repellant; 4) Perform daily tick checks after any outdoor activity. A tick must be attached for a minimum of 24 hours before the infection can be passed on, further stressing the need for prompt and proper tick removal. If you are bitten by a tick, or work in a known tick habitat, watch for symptoms for up to 30 days, and call a healthcare provider if symptoms develop. Deer ticks can transmit not only Lyme disease, but also two other tick-borne infections that are present in Maine: anaplasmosis and babesiosis. Babesiosis cases increased in 2015 and cases of Anaplasmosis remained steady. The majority of tickborne illnesses occur during the summer months when ticks and humans are active outdoors. Remember that the deer tick (Ixodes scapularis) is the only tick that can transmit Lyme disease, but there are other species of ticks throughout the state. Tick identification references are available to order online at Maine CDC’s website. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension Tick ID Lab offers free identification services and educational resources. Maine CDC has Lyme disease information available at www.maine.gov.

Three Ways to Lift Your Mood "Posture is not just important in how you look; it’s also important in how you look at life, says posture and healthy living expert, Dr. Steven Weiniger. “Think of all the sayings that correlate the way you look to how you feel – feeling down, eyes downcast, keep your chin up, hold your head high – your posture reflects your mood." Tired and grumpy, and it’s not even Monday? Your postural habits may be to blame. "On a scientific level, poor posture negatively impacts your body’s natural processes, from a neurological, muscular, and hormonal point of view," says Dr. Weiniger. "Living slumped can cause a range of problems from chronic pain and numbness from nerve compression, to gastrointestinal issues, to breathing difficulties. And, when you’re not feeling your best physically, it takes a big toll emotionally." There’s been a number of studies done that show that posture and attitude are tightly linked, and if you can strengthen your posture, you will not only look better, but you may feel better as well. If you’re ready to start feeling better, Dr. Weiniger provides actionable posture tips to feel more confident and energetic right now (Hint: they don’t involve coffee). 1. Commute with strong posture. You may be spending upwards of 4 hours a day in the car, and your posture may not be helping your road rage. “Make your chair more vertical and adjust your rear view mirror a little higher, forcing you to keep your sitting posture tall while you drive, suggests Weiniger. 2. Older Drivers Who Fall are More Likely to be Involved in Car Crashes AAA Foundation study suggests that preventing falls for older drivers can make roads safer. Older drivers with a history of falling are 40 percent more likely to be involved in crashes than their peers, according to a new study re-
leased by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. Falls limit an older drivers’ ability to function behind the wheel and can make driving risky for themselves and others on the road. These findings are important since annually a record 12 million older adults will experience a fall.

“Drivers age 60 and older are involved in more than 400,000 crashes each year, and it’s important that we find ways to keep them and others safe on the road. said Peter Kissinger, President and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “This research is critical because it shows that we can now use an older driver’s fall history to identify if they are at greater risk for a crash. The report, Associations Between Falls and Driving Outcomes in Older Adults, is the latest research released in the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety’s Longitudinal Research on Aging Drivers (LongROAD) project. Researchers from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus along with the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety say that falls can increase crash risk in two ways:
Falls can result in a loss of functional ability (i.e. wrist fractures or a broken leg), which can make it difficult for older drivers to steer or brake to avoid a crash. Falls can increase an individual’s fear of falling, which can lead to a decrease in physical activity that weakens driving skills. “When it comes to physical health, you either use it or lose it, said Pat Moody, Director of Public Affiars for AAA Northern New England. “Falls often scare people into being less active, but decreasing physical activity can weaken muscles and coordination and make someone more likely to be in a crash. The research suggests that seniors and their families should view falls as a possible early indicator of declining physical fitness. Addressing the health

issues that originally led to the fall such as lower body weakness, poor balance, slow reaction time, certain medications, dizziness, or vision problems, can help older drivers strengthen their functional ability and lower their risk for crashing or experiencing another fall in the future. “Older drivers should find activities that enhance balance, strengthen muscles and promote flexibility,â€? continued Moody. “Even a low impact fitness training program or driver improvement course can help safely extend an older driver’s years on the road.â€? Fall prevention is a great way for older drivers to keep themselves and others safe while on the road. Those concerned about a parent or other older driver should help them monitor risk factors that address health concerns or household dangers. AAA recommends a series of exercises and stretches to improve neck, shoulder, trunk, back and overall body flexibility, which can help a driver who has suffered from a recent fall. As a leading advocate for senior driver safety, AAA also offers a variety of programs and resources to help older drivers improve their driving performance and avoid crashes. The LongROAD (Longitudinal Research on Aging Drivers) Study is designed to generate the largest and most comprehensive data base about senior drivers in existence and will support in-depth studies of senior driving and mobility to better understand risks and develop effective countermeasures. Health & Fitness What Causes Autism? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that autism spectrum disorder is the fastest-growing developmental disability, affecting about 1 percent of the world’s population, including 3.5 million Americans. The National Epidemiologic Database for the Study of Autism in Canada, which has been monitoring the prevalence of ASD in various areas of Canada since 2003, says one in every 94 children in Canada is autistic. The prevalence of autism and the mystery behind it has left families, doctors and researchers perplexed as they continue to look for possible causes for of the condition. Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that involves deficits in social communication and interactions across multiple settings and situations. Some people with autism may have trouble communicating, while others may recede from social situations. Other signs can include repetitive behaviors or extreme focus in one concentration of activity. ASD develops — and presents symptoms — differently from person to person. There is no single cause of ASD, but medical professionals generally accept that it is linked to abnormalities in the brain structure and its function. The Autism Society indicates that scans of brains in children with autism are different in shape and structure than brain scans of children who do not have the disorder. Vaccines are not linked to autism, despite misinformation that has spread in recent years. That potential link between vaccines and autism was discredited as far back as 1998. “Over the last two decades, extensive research has asked whether there is any link between childhood vaccinations and autism,â€? said Rob Ring, the chief science officer at Autism Speaks. “The results of this research are clear: Vaccines do not cause autism. We urge that all children be fully vaccinated.â€? Researchers at the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center have found autism likely starts well before the emergence of any noticeable symptoms, and the following factors may play a role in the development of ASD. • Pesticides: Some studies
have found that pesticides may interfere with genes involved in the central nervous system, according to experts at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. These chemicals may adversely affect people predisposed to autism. According to a study published in June 2014 in Environmental Health Perspectives, a research team from the University of California, Davis, tracked 1,043 families in California, where there’s a $38 billion agricultural industry. One-third of the pregnant mothers in the study lived within a mile of farms that used pesticides linked to impaired development. Proximity to pesticides was associated with a 60 percent increased risk for ASD. • Genetic vulnerability: The Autism Society states ASD tends to occur more frequently among individuals with certain medical conditions, including fragile X syndrome, tuberous sclerosis,
congenital rubella syndrome and untreated phenylketonuria, or PKU. Ingesting harmful substances during pregnancy also has been linked to increased risk of autism for the child. The National Institutes of Health found families with one child who has autism have about a one in 20 chance of having a second child with the disorder. • Pharmaceuticals: Babies who have been exposed to certain pharmaceuticals in the womb, including valproic acid, which is used for seizures and mood disorders, and thalidomide, have been found to have a high risk of autism for the child. Thalidomide was once used for morning sickness and anxiety, and it can still be prescribed as a treatment for cancer. • Parental age: According to UC Davis Health System researchers, autism risk increases with parental age. Conception by older parents (age 40-plus) may increase the chances for ASD compared to pregnancies for
those in their 20s. ASD continues to affect millions of people across the globe. Understanding potential risk factors may help individuals make smarter choices as they
consider expanding their families. This article was provided by MetroCreative. The Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by articles from MetroCreative.

At an auction in Hong Kong, a single case of wine from Henri Jayer, the legendary Burgundian vintner who passed away in 2006, sold for $83,000. Not all wine from Burgundy is that expensive, of course. But numbers like these terrify wine enthusiasts, budding and experienced alike. How is someone supposed to learn about Burgundy with prices seeming to reach new heights each week? Sure, affordable options abound in lesser-known appellations in southern Burgundy, like Rully, Mercurey, and Givry. The most distinctive Chardonnay in the world comes from Chablis, where even humble wines from top producers are charming. Beaujolais offers the greatest value in the wine world. But Beaujolais offers Gamay, not Pinot Noir. Chablis is geographically separated from the rest of Burgundy by about 60 miles -- and the soils and climate

have more in common with Champagne than Burgundy. Southern Burgundy's offerings are bountiful and often delicious -- but at best, the wines give a sense of Burgundy's aspirations. The heart of Burgundy is in the north, where the CĂ´te de Nuits and the CĂ´te de Beaune together comprise the CĂ´te d'Or. So when my brother asked me to teach him and some friends about "serious" Burgundy, I was worried. How could I possibly walk them through the CĂ´te d'Or without bankrupting the family? The first step? Explaining Burgundy's classification system. About 800 years ago, Cistercian monks in the region began observing different sites and the quality of the resulting wines. An informal, threetier classification of vineyards emerged over time. The French government formalized that system in 1936. The first classification level is "village," a designation that's only granted to Burgundy's top communes. About 37 percent of Burgundy's production is classified here. If a wine is adorned with a village name -- e.g., Gevrey Chambertin -- it's produced entirely from grapes grown in that village. The next level is "Premier Cru." Almost 600 vineyards in Burgundy have this status, and most are in the CĂ´te d'Or. Premier cru wines aren't necessarily from a single vineyard, though. So wines from these sites always feature the village name prominently -- and the vineyard name if the grapes come from a single site. Together, these vineyards account for about 10 percent of Burgundy's production. The top 32 vineyards -the "Grand Crus" -- produce Burgundy's most storied wines. Twenty-four of these sites are in the CĂ´te de Nuits, all of which are dedicated to Pinot Noir. Eight of these sites are in the

Côte de Beaune, seven of which are dedicated to Chardonnay. In the hands of a skilled winemaker, the grapes from these sites are able to translate both time and place. These wines are always expensive -together, the Grand Cru vineyards account for less than 1.5 percent of Burgundy's production -- but the experiences they offer can be spiritual. Wines from outside these classified areas but within Burgundy's boundaries -- and wines blended from different classified areas -- are generally labeled as "Bourgogne." (There are many confusing exceptions to this broad generalization.) The second step? Helping my brother and his friends distinguish between the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune. Pinot Noir fares excellently in both. But broadly speaking, wines from the Côte de Nuits are richer, more structured, and more complex than their Côte de Beaune counterparts. Finally, I wanted to stress the importance of skilled winemaking. Sure, it'd be difficult to make a bad Chardonnay from a Grand Cru like Montrachet or a bad Pinot Noir from a Grand Cru like RomanÊe-Conti. But great producers can make excellent wines from Burgundy's least impressive sites. With these three goals, I selected seven wines: To start, two whites: a young, basic Bourgogne from Dominique Lafon and a 10-year-old Grand Cru from Louis Jadot's holdings in Bienvenues-BâtardMontrachet. Then, four young reds: two village wines from the Côte de Nuits and two Premier Cru wines from the Côte de Beaune. From the Côte de Nuits, I selected a Gevrey Chambertin from Marc Roy and a Chambolle-Musigny from Bruno Clair. From the Côte de Beaune, I selected Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru from Simon Bize and a Volnay Premier Cru from Pousse d'Or. To finish? A 20-year-old, Grand Cru red from MÊoCamuzet's Clos de Vougeot holdings. All the wines came from top producers. All were delicious. It wasn't a cheap night; together, our group split a $900 tab. But with just seven wines, I was able to talk about "serious" Burgundy. Submitted by David White, founder and editor of Terroirist.com, one of the world's most popular wine blogs. His columns are housed at GrapeCollective.com.

Observing the cats and understanding each one’s unique personality guides us in knowing how best to help them relax, overcome fear, and develop confidence. Once they’re happier, they’re ready to be adopted. If you love cats and are interested in helping socialize them, join a team that gives so much love to kitties who desperately need it. We want every kitty, like Sweet Pea in the photo, to have a loving socializer working with them. Adoption Center Closed -
Our adoption center is temporarily closed to the public until our kitties are feeling better. Please visit our website to see how you can help! Thank you.

Remembering Kittery’s Schoolhouses 1804 - Present
KITTERY The Kittery Historical & Naval Museum has partnered with Kittery Adult Ed for this historic look at the evolution of Kittery's schoolhouses. As the oldest incorporated town in Maine, Kittery has had an interesting and often challenging education system. From 1647 until 1805, education was required by law so private houses and churches were initially the place of learning. Beginning in 1805 that changed.
This program will focus on the original twelve one-room schoolhouses in Kittery's confines. The consolidation and expansion of six remaining school will also be a feature of the presentation. It will be an evening
to swap and share stories about Kittery's old schoolhouses. Bring your personal or family memories and photos to share. Steve Estes is a former Traip history teacher and will facilitate the discussion. He will be joined by other long-term residents who will also present information on the Kittery schoolhouses. Program is scheduled for Tuesday, April 12, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Traip Academy, Williams Ave Kittery. Fee: $5. Please call to pre-register: 207-439-5896.

recognizing the work of playwrights, designers, actors, choreographers and directors among small, mid-size, small and fringe theater companies throughout the previous year. The IRNE Awards recognize the extraordinary wealth of talent in the Boston and New England theatre community. The IRNE Award ceremony will take place on Monday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. (doors at 7 p.m.), at the 1200 Hotel Ballroom (The Holiday Inn) in Brookline, MA, just outside Kenmore Square. All are invit-

Things like taking the stairs versus the elevator is a good start, but take an extra moment to focus on maintaining an erect posture as you go up the stairs – you may be surprised at how much better you’ll be able to breathe at the top! 3. Take a break! Stop what you’re doing at work every 30-45 minutes, get out of your chair, stand tall, and focus on your alignment and breathing. During your Strong Posture break, focus on bringing your shoulders up, back and down, keeping your pelvis tucked, and head held tall and aligned over your shoulders. Then, take 5 deep belly breaths. Posture and healthy living expert Dr. Steven Weiniger speaks globally on improving posture for longevity, health,

McKenna Named NAC LaCrosse Rookie of the Week YORK After leading the Castleton University Spartans to a seasonopening 15-4 victory against Western Connecticut, freshman Erin McKenna of York, was honored as the North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Week, (NAC) as announced by the conference.
McKenna was a key force on defense in the Spartan victory on Saturday. She played the entire game on defense and helped limit the Colonials to their lowest scoring output since 2012 and zero goals over the final 27 minutes of regulation. She also picked up a pair of draw controls in the win.
Castleton University, VT, is a community that offers more than 75 programs of study for undergraduate and graduate students, 27 intercollegiate sports, and over 40 clubs and organizations. The university stresses community service and provides exceptional programs for first year students.
Gunsmiths in the 1800s Exibit Opens at Museum STATEWIDE “Inventors and Sportsmen: Maine Gunsmiths in the 1800s” opens at the Maine State Museum, 230 State Street in Augusta on Saturday, April 2. It celebrates generations of Maine gunsmiths and illustrates the inventiveness, artistry, and craftsmanship that they brought to the early gun-making industry, as well as to the sports of hunting and fishing. “Inventors and Sportsmen: Maine Gunsmiths in the 1800s” features over 75 artifacts, including guns made by 22 Maine makers. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the exhibit’s opening day, which will also feature free museum admission, informal gallery tours by exhibition curator Laurie LaBar, and live music. “In Maine, people are comfortable with guns, but many perhaps don’t realize that for centuries, firearms have not just been tools for recreation, provisioning and safety, but also sources of complex craftsmanship, beauty, and ingenuity,” comments Maine State Museum Director Bernard Fishman. “At the museum’s new exhibit, visitors will see an aspect of Maine’s culture that they may not have considered before, but which is
sure to excite pride and inspiration.” The 1800s represent a time of transition and innovation in the craft of gunsmithing, as it evolved from craft toward industry, and from handwork to mechanization and mass-production. Maine was at the forefront of this dramatic change through the work of John Hall, a Portland cooper turned gunsmith, whose work is featured prominently in the museum’s exhibition. In 1811, Hall set off a revolution with his invention of a breech-loading mechanism and system of mass-production. By the 1870s, men like the Evans brothers, whose firearms are
also shown in the exhibit, had adopted Hall’s mass-production system and were making over 50 large-capacity rifles every day in their Mechanic Falls plant. With their improvements in the efficiency of manufacture, Maine’s gunsmiths changed the way America worked. Employing a remarkable number of skills and innovations, Maine’s numerous gunsmiths also helped create and sustain a culture of hunting and outdoor sports in Maine that continues to shape the state today. “Inventors and Sportsmen: Maine Gunsmiths in the 1800s” will be open from April 2, 2016 through April 1, 2017.
