space discovery as well as handson STEM education opportunities for K-12 and college students. UCDC brings together teams of students in grades 6-12 from schools across Maine to conceptualize, plan and present original payload designs to a panel of space industry experts. This year, students will focus on designing high-altitude, functioning micro-satellite missions. The top three teams will advance
to a build and test phase, where they will bring their designs to life using 3D printing technology, and deploy their cubesats via high-altitude balloon. Noble Middle School will be one of twelve schools competing and each student teams is led by a faculty advisor from each school. Local Towns Participate in a Solar Collaborative SOUTHERN MAINE Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC) is soliciting proposals from solar power developers for six towns that have banded together as the Southern Maine Solar Collaborative (SMSC) in an effort to take advantage of Maine’s new energy billing program, by purchasing from solar farms (located within Central Maine Power utility grid) thus reducing their energy costs and reliance on fossil fuels. The six towns will use a joint procurement process to obtain solar power via the Net Energy Billing Tariff Rate Program, which allows Maine mu-

municipal staff time, competitive contract terms and peer learning support. SMPDC Sustainability Coordinator Karina Graeter explains, “Utility costs are a big burden on towns.
