Local Towns Participate in a Solar Collaborative SOUTHERN MAINE Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC) is soliciting proposals from solar power developers for six towns that have banded together as the Southern Maine Solar Collaborative (SMSC) in an effort to take advantage of Maine’s new energy billing program, by purchasing from solar farms (located within Central Maine Power utility grid) thus reducing their energy costs and reliance on fossil fuels. The six towns will use a joint procurement process to obtain solar power via the Net Energy Billing Tariff Rate Program, which allows Maine mu-

Based on research from Constant Contact, over 40% of these owners have all of their wealth tied up in the business. a new, free option for Maine people who need a ride to and from a COVID-19 vaccination appointment. Maine DHHS is partnering with ModivCare, one of the organizations that coordinates rides for MaineCare members, to provide rides for any Maine resident who is unable to drive, lacks reliable transportation or is otherwise unable to travel to their appointment. ModivCare will in turn partner with Community Action Programs and transportation companies to provide rides. This new option is in addition to the transportation support that DHHS already offers for eligible MaineCare members who face challenges getting to their vaccine appointment. “This new transportation option helps residents who may struggle to get to and from a clinic for a lifesaving vaccine,” said DHHS Commissioner Jeanne Lambrew. “It is a new tool to promote equity in Maine’s vaccination plan.” Advertise in

“This new help with transportation removes another obstacle facing at-risk Maine people who are eligible to be vaccinated against COVID-19,” said Dr. Nirav D. Shah, Director of the Maine CDC. “Its a welcome addition as we continue to work to add vaccination options.” Individuals must have a vaccination appointment before requesting a ride. Rides will be provided to and from the appointment. These may be shared rides so DHHS can provide transportation to as many people as possible, and face masks will be required. DHHS can provide transportation for appointments that are scheduled Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

At least 48 hours before the vaccine appointment, individuals should call 1-855-608-5172 to reserve a ride and should have the following information ready: Date and time of appointment; Name, address, and phone number of the facility where they are receiving the vaccination. MaineCare members who already use a Non-Emergency Transportation broker to arrange rides to their MaineCare-covered services should call that same broker for rides to vaccination clinics. This program is for MaineCare members who are ineligible for Non-Emergency Transportation as well as any other Maine resident who does not have access to reliable transportation to get to their vaccination appointment.

End 68 Hours of Hunger Kittery Celebrates 9th Year KITTERY This coming week is the 9th anniversary of the End 68 Hours of Hunger Kittery Program. Thanks to a very supportive community and school system, the group has delivered over 22,700 bags a food. As of last week they are supporting a little over 60 children each week and in 9 years, every dollar donated has gone to supply food for children. End 68 Hours of Hunger is a public not-for-profit effort to confront the approximately 68 hours of hunger that some school children experience between the free lunch they receive at school on Friday afternoon and the free breakfast they receive at school on Monday morning. This weekend program, established in New Hampshire in 2011, puts nourishing food in the hands of school children to carry them through the weekend. They are entirely volunteer

based and 100 percent of funds go directly to feeding at-risk children unless otherwise des-

ignated by the donor. For more information, go to www.end68hoursofhunger.org.

6 sheets of fresh or frozen phyllo thawed

Directions: Blend ¾ cup of powdered sugar, eggs, vanilla, orange zest, and ricotta cheese in a blender or food processor, until smooth. Pour into bowl and stir in the cooked rice and pine nuts, set aside. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Lightly butter a 9-inch glass pie plate, lay 1 phyllo sheet over the plate, shape to the bottom of the dish and over the sides of the plate, let extra crust overhang the plate. Brush the entire phyllo crust with melted butter. Lay second crust over the first crust but going in a different direction, the first north to south and second east to west. Repeat this with the remaining crust and butter each until all used up. Be sure to lightly firm the crust on the bottom in plate. Slowly pour in the Ricotta mixture into the pie plate. Carefully fold the overhanging layers of dough over the top of the filling to enclose the pie filling completely. Brush the remaining butter on the top of the phyllo crust that covers the filling. Bake pie until the phyllo crust is golden brown, fluffy and the filling has set, about 30 to 35 minutes. Place the pie on a cooling rack and cool completely. Sprinkle or sift powdered sugar over the pie and it’s ready to serve. Enjoy!

Emily M. Sirois, 75 SANFORD – Emily Mae Sirois passed away unexpectedly on March 24, 2021. Emily was born in Attleboro, MA, on April 27, 1945 the daughter of Theodore and Iola Jarosz. Emily was the youngest of four siblings Micky, Kitty, and Ted. Emily spent her childhood years growing up in North Attleboro and attended local schools it is during this time she met her high school sweetheart, Lanny S. Sirois Sr. Emily and Lanny were married in 1964 and spent 45 loving years together. Emily and Lanny had their first child in 1965, followed by their second child in 1967. The Sirois family moved to Tampa Florida where Emily was a teachers aid for seven years and in 1975 the couple welcomed a third child. It was in 1976 the Sirois family decided to make Maine there forever home; settling in Sanford, it was at this home where Emily spent the remainder of her days. Emily worked at Sprague Electric for a short time but most importantly she was a mother

and housewife. Emily decided to return to work and held a position as a salesperson at Woodman Jewelers. Emily worked at Woodman Jewelers for 20+ years where she became an extraordinarily successful, well-known sales lady, Emily made many friends and was loved by all she worked with. Emily was a gifted artist she enjoyed painting and writing poetry, she made several paintings and murals that hang in her children’s homes. Emily spent many of her days tending her garden creating beautiful gardens wherever she lived. Emily loved to teach her grand and great grandchildren about all the birds that came to visit. Emily was an exceedingly kind and giving person, always searching for ways to give back to those less fortunate. Emily was part of the Ladies Auxiliary for Ross Corner Fire Company and supported her church by serving on the Vestry, cleaning linens, and assisting with donating food to the local food pantry. Emily is predeceased by husband Lanny S. Sirois Sr., son Dawson Lee Sirois, parents Theodore and Iola Jarosz and siblings Mitchell (Micky) Jarosz and Catherine (Kitty) Jarosz Roaf. She is survived by her children, Lanny S. Sirois Jr with wife Diane and Adam Sirois; grandchildren Diane Bell with husband Raymond, Deena Day with husband Brandon; four great-grandchildren; brother Theodore (Ted) Jarosz Jr. with wife Susan; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a period of visitation on April 9, 5-7 p.m. at Autumn Green Funeral Home, 47 Oak Street, Alfred. All are welcome. To celebrate Emily’s life there will be a private service held for immediate family at 10 a.m. on April 10 at the St. Georges Episcopal Church in Sanford. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the New England Cancer Specialists (www.newenglandcancerspecialists.org). The Autumn Green Funeral Home is respectfully handling her arrangements. • • • • • • • • • •

dent of Kennebunk, went to be with the Lord on Palm Sunday, March 28, 2021 at her home with her loved ones by her side. She was born in Kennebunk on May 21, 1934, daughter of Earl and Vivian (Littlefield) Hanscom. Kathy was a 1953 graduate of Kennebunk High School. For many years, she worked retail for several companies; including Colonial Pharmacy and Farrington’s Clothing Store. Kathy was brought up in the Advent Christian Church in the Lower Village and currently a member of the Bethel Christian Church in North Berwick. She enjoyed her monthly get-togethers with her 1953 classmates. Kathy loved gardening and her little dog, Lizzie, but especially loved her Lord Jesus whom she said “Never failed me”. She was pre-deceased by her two daughters, Jody Melanson and Allison Goodwin; grandson Tyson Goodwin; sisters, Genevieve Nadeau and Marjorie Gould; and brother Milan Hanscom. She will be sorely missed by her husband of 30 years, Richard “Deke” Stevens of

Graveside services in the Evergreen Cemetery in Kennebunk will be private. Friends who wish may contribute to Southern Maine Hospice, 390 Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home in North Berwick. Condolences may be expressed at www. johnsonfuneralhomeme.com.

We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, I read your column and love it, I have learned so much from it! I want to know I was running Windows 7 and upgraded to Windows 10. Now I want to know. How can I make a DVD from installed windows 10 so I can do a fresh install of Windows 10 in the future. I tried to make a USB but it did not work properly. Regards, M. Dear M., If you want to do a fresh install of Windows 10 on the same computer, all you have to do is create an install disk using the tool and directions on Microsoft’s website at www.microsoft. com/en-us/software-download/ windows10. The tool is called the media creation tool, and Microsoft has some pretty good instructions for you to follow as you download first the tool, then the file for the

disk. You will not need a product key since Windows 10 will authenticate using a hardware key that is unique to your computer. If you want to create an image of your current setup on your computer complete with files, drivers, and installed programs you will need to get a program like Acronis True Image which will allow you to make a complete backup of your hard drive, and also create a boot disk that will allow you to start the computer if the hard drive has crashed and restore the computer using the backup you made. When you create this type of backup on a regular basis, you also protect yourself against ransomware. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have an HP desktop and a HP tablet that both run Gmail. When I delete an entry on the desktop it doesn’t delete the same

one on my tablet. Can this be done? Thanks, Ron Dear Ron, Yes, this can be done. In fact, I’m surprised that it is not already being done. Gmail is a web based email program, you can access it from any internet- connected device from your computer to your phone. Normally, when you delete a message from any device, it is removed from your Gmail account on their server, which means that it is removed from all devices. The fact that your emails are not automatically synced means that one of your devices is using POP to download messages and not either direct access or IMAP. If you are using an email program on your desktop, try switching to direct access (https://mail.google.com) If you are using the email app on your tablet, try either direct access,

or switch to the gmail app if it is available. If you want to continue to use your email program, you would need to set Gmail up for IMAP access instead of POP. You might need to get your local computer shop to set this up for you as it is too involved for this column. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have been a reader for several years, and have learned a lot from you. This is the first time I am submitting a question. I have a Lenovo Ideapad 110S, with Windows 10. I use Firefox as my browser, and have uBlock Origin as my ad blocker. I have been entering sweepstakes at a particular website for several years, with the ad blocker on. Recently, a popup appeared, telling me it appears that I am using an ad blocker, and to please turn it off, since they provide their content for free,

Dear Rose, If you think of every website on the internet as a place of business, kind of like a small shop, it might help. The reason this particular sweepstakes website was created is so that the owner can pay his or her bills. They offer a service to you (a convenient place to enter multiple sweepstakes) and instead of charging you for this service, they get paid by displaying ads. I know that some game sites (like pogo) offer a paid subscription to their site that removes the ads, perhaps the site you are using has an option like that. I don’t have much experience with ad blocking software, so I can’t help with that part of your question. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Thank you for all your help over the years. This is not a computer question per se. Why do so many sites, including Yahoo and Facebook have completely false information on the side of the site? For example, there are reports of deaths of celebrities, including movie stars and sports figures, that show up for several days on See COMPUTER page 23...

etc. With the ad blocker on, I can submit about 6 entries per minute. With the ad blocker off, the ads slow down the computer, so that it takes up to two minutes to submit one entry. Quite a difference! I resent the waste of my time, and I don’t have time to enter all the giveaways under these conditions. Is there any way I can use the ad blocker without the other party detecting it? Or, is there another ad blocker I can use that they can’t detect? I also don’t think they should have the right to prevent me from accessing their website if I’m using an ad blocker. Thanks for any help you can give, Rose
