29th Annual Patriots’ Day Celebration April 12-14 OGUNQUIT Please join the town of Ogunquit to recognize and celebrate Patriots’ Day with a host of patriotic and fun festivities April 12-14. Named the Best Show of Patriotism by Down East Magazine, Ogunquit’s Patriots’ Day events celebrate our colonial and early American heritage through re-enactments, concerts, contests, and demonstrations. As the unofficial opening weekend for visitors to Ogunquit, this event also celebrates the unique character of our beautiful community with an arts and crafts fair, fife and

drum corps, hay rides, a pooch pageant, food tastings from area restaurants and much more. Ogunquit’s patriotism shines brightly as we join in remember-

ing a revolutionary and historic event, honoring our forefathers throughout this fun and educational weekend. New this year, we are wel-

coming the Piscataqua Rangers Jr. Fife and Drum Corps to Ogunquit for a demonstration on Saturday afternoon. The Piscataqua Rangers Jr. Fife and Drum Corps was organized in 2014 as a ministry to children between the age of 10 and 18. It is free to join, and they provide free lessons and an experience like none other to young people in both Southern Maine and New Hampshire. Currently the only junior fife and drum corps in both states, their mission is to preserve the art and music of ancient fife and drum, to teach our cultural heritage to young

people, to make the art relative to today’s audience, and to raise the public’s patriotic spirit. A call also went out to any/ all great pie makers interested in submitting a homemade pie in an “American” flavor to compete in the American Pie Contest. Pies will be judged during Taste of the Town in categories of theme, appearance, and taste. Grand prize winner will receive Gift of Ogunquit gift certificates. For more information on Patriots Day activities, please go to www.visitogunquit.org or call 207-646-1279. (Photo by Shane Corcoran)

the executive producer of “Ciao Italia” with Mary Ann Esposito, America’s longest running cooking show, and spent 10 years writing and directing for “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” Lally recalls, “As the television director for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, my job was to never miss a trick when it came to preparing to shoot a scene in Studio A at WQED, Pittsburgh. Especially the ‘Neighborhood of Make-believe.’ “Whether it was at King Friday’s castle, X the Owl and Henrietta Pussycat’s tree, Lady Elaine’s Museum-Go-Round, or Daniel’s Clock, everything needed to be in perfect readiness before we rolled tape and started

to record.” Fred McFeely Rogers (1928 - 2003) was the creator, composer, producer, head writer, and host of the preschool television series Mister Rogers’ Neighbor-

hood (1968–2001). Rogers would end each program by telling his viewers, “You’ve made this day a special day, by just your being you. There’s no person in the whole world like you; and I like

you just the way you are.” Lally’s talk will take place at 6 p.m. at the Berwick Public Library, 103 Old Pine Hill Road. For details, call 207-698-5737 or visit www.berwick.lib.me.us.

Angels rolled the stone away from the tomb wherein He lay! Little children, come and sing, ‘Glory, glory to the King, Christ the Lord of everything!’ Happy Easter from the Parish of the Ascension of the Lord. Those who are able are asked to bring the above items for donation, before or after Mass, to St. Raphael Church, located on 6 Whipple Road in Kittery (Saturday Mass at 5:30 p.m., Sunday Mass at 9 a.m.); St. Christopher Church, located on

MSAD35 Directors Name John Caverly Superintendent of Schools

ELIOT/SOUTH BERWICK Directors of Maine School District 35, serving the children of Eliot and South Berwick, has named John Caverly as the next superintendent of schools starting July 1, to succeed Dr. Mary Nash, who is retiring at the end of June. The selection is the result of an extensive search that produced 18 applicants from diverse geographic and professional backgrounds. The Board of Directors conducted a thor-

ough interview process, including a 12 person advisory board made up of current MSAD35 principals, administrators and teachers, to arrive at the selection of Caverly. Caverly joined MSAD35 in 2004 and has served the district as a Physical Education and Health teacher at Marshwood High School; as an Assistant Principal at Marshwood High School, as Principal of Marshwood Middle School and most recently as the Chief

Operations Officer for the district. Caverly has always strived to create a safe and secure learning environment where students can thrive. Caverly takes pride in being a student centered decision maker and tirelessly works to create a school environment where student learning comes first. Prior to joining MSAD35, Caverly was employed by the East Longmeadow Public Schools, for ten years, where he served in various roles including Dean of Students, Mathematics Teacher, and Athletic

Director. Caverly’s career in education began at the Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative, where he taught Adapted Physical Education for grades Kindergarten to grade 12. Caverly grew up in Bath and graduated from Morse High School. He received his undergraduate degree from Springfield College in Physical Education and earned his master’s degree in Counseling and Student Personnel Administration from Springfield College in 1995.

Caverly currently resides in South Berwick with his wife Renee and two sons Matthew and Connor.

Governor Mills Signs Legislation to Incentivize Growth of Solar Power in Maine

AUGUSTA Joined by state lawmakers and renewable energy supporters, Governor Janet Mills signed into law a bill that will help incentivize the long-awaited growth of the solar industry in Maine. LD 91 An Act to Eliminate Gross Metering, sponsored by Representative Seth Berry and signed by the governor, will reset the state’s metering policy for solar and ensure that consumers who produce electricity from solar panels will be

fairly compensated for supplying excess energy back to the electric grid. Governor Mills signed the legislation during a ceremony at Rocky’s Stove Shoppe in Augusta, the first stove shop in the state to convert to solar energy. “For too long, Maine has lagged behind other states in embracing policies that advance the future of solar power,” said Governor Mills. “That ends today. By signing into law this bill, we are restoring net metering, resetting Maine’s solar policy, and charting the course for the growth of solar power to lower electricity bills and combat climate change. There is a lot more work to be done, and I look forward to working with the Legislature to send a clear signal that Maine’s clean energy future is bright.” “Net metering is only a partial compensation for the incredible value we all receive from

our neighbors’ solar arrays,” said Representative Berry, DBowdoinham. “I want to thank Gov. Mills for her leadership and support as we take this first small step toward a locally-controlled, clean-energy future for our state.” In 2016, Maine came under the rule of a practice known as “gross metering”, which required solar panel owners to install a second meter to measure excess energy they produced through their solar array that was supplied back to Maine’s electric grid. This electricity, even if used on site, was given a lower value. LD 91 An Act to Eliminate Gross Metering reverses that decision and restores net metering in Maine. As established by LD 91, Maine customers who own a solar PV system will receive a one to one credit for the excess electricity they produce per kilowatt hour.

Dear Computer Lady, What is the best virus cleaner for your computer? I have Windows 10. It is sooooo slow and won’t even open explorer because it is trying to do too much. Is there any virus protector for free? Thanks, Cecilia Dear Cecilia, Chances are if your computer is so slow it won’t even open Windows Explorer, you either have a failing hard drive, or you need a good clean out of the computer before you start with a new virus cleaner. I would suggest that you get some hardware diagnostics done on the computer first, to make sure the hard drive is not failing. Otherwise, you would be spending time and money on cleaning out viruses only to find that you need to replace the hard

Finally, to remove and prevent malware and viruses, I would use Emsisoft at Emsisoft. com You can download a free trial to clean your computer out and see if you like the program, then it is fairly inexpensive to purchase. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have finally been able to move pictures to my photos in my documents in windows 10. What I cant do is put several pictures into one folder. compromise my computers information? Thanks, Ray

Dear Computer Lady, My computer goes to sleep every time I dust the key board off. I try to avoid the sleep key (it has a moon on the button) but it’s very sensitive. I always have to shut down the computer completely and turn it back on to WAKE it up. What can I do to wake the computer up? Thank you, Mary

Dear Ray, I don’t believe that AVG has phone support, only email and online chat support, so if you found the phone number for this GuruAid after doing an online search, you were most likely not getting help from AVG. Just out of curiosity, I did a search for GuruAid and found lots on complaints online, mostly from people who thought they were contacting the support department of a major company like Microsoft, McAfee or Norton. Remember that anyone can put up a web page listing their phone number as the support number for a company. When you are searching for contact information for a company, don’t just google it. Make sure you get the number from the actual company website. So, for example, if you are looking for support for AVG, make sure you are at the www.avg.com website. I am always a little wary about giving control of my computer to anyone. I don’t provide remote services, and I would have to be ABSOLUTELY SURE that a person was from the company that I needed help from before I gave them control of my computer. They could install any number of programs on my computer while they are running it, anything from a program that collects passwords, to a keylogger that tracks everything you type. Elizabeth

Dear Mary, I would ALWAYS shut the computer down and unplug it before doing any cleaning on it. This is to protect the computer from static electricity, which can destroy sensitive electronics. Even dusting can generate static electricity. Before you clean the computer, turn it completely off, and unplug it. If it is a laptop, unplug it and remove the battery. Now it is safe to clean your computer. You can dust it with a damp rag, blow the dust off with some compressed air, or use a cleaning wipe made for computers. Don’t use a vacuum to clean your computer, since a vacuum cleaner generates static electricity. This will not only solve the problem of having your computer go to sleep when you don’t want it to, but also protect your computer from electrostatic damage. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. To submit a question, email her at elizabeth.boston@ gmail.com.

~ News ~ In Observance of a Robin in the Sun By Jim Fabiano The older I get the more I enjoy the simple task of observing. I am fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places on our planet. These observations aren’t planned because they just happen. I assume most are ignored or looked through. But, every now and then an observation has a tendency to burn into one’s brain. I was mesmerized by the image of a robin perched on the rung of an arbor I had built around a bird bath in order to display the flowers I had planted right after the ground allowed me to do so. It was early in the evening right before the sun decided it had enough of the day. The robin sat motionless staring into the dimming orb of light contemplating nothing more important than itself. Or at least I thought it was doing so. I had just finished what I considered a lousy day. Hell, I had just finished up a lousy month. Every time I attempted to get ahead financially some necessity in my life increased in price. The more I attempted to relax the more I was forced to speed my life up. In my youth this wouldn’t have bothered me because the definition of being young was living hard and fast not caring what the future would bring because the future was too far away. But, now that I see what time is going to give me I find it more important to prepare myself and my family for what living too long is going to deliver. Staring out a side window of my house I started to wonder what this mystery bird knew I didn’t know. How come with all its problems this bird seemed to be relaxing in a sun that no longer had the capacity to give heat and barely had the strength to give the day anymore light. I smiled thinking I was part of a species that was supposed to be

the highest level of living things on the planet. We were supposed to be in control of all other life. I smiled thinking maybe this was the problem. We thought we were so special we took it on ourselves to control all the living things around us. Maybe nothing else wanted to do this. Maybe the other species of the world were too smart to be fooled into thinking power meant peace. Thinking back into the history of our world I started to wonder if the dinosaurs, that once were

supposed to rule the world, also became too tired to control what was uncontrollable and simply gave up. I wonder if some giant reptile looked out from its cave and decided enough was enough because it too was mesmerized by something much weaker and smaller who was staring up at the same ball of light at another time seemingly relaxing in all its dying glory. Snapping out of a trance caused by a combination of yearning to relax and wonder-

ment of something that was taking place in front of me I continued to watch the motionless robin stare into the dying sphere of light. I found my head turning toward the sun hoping to see what this ancient reptile saw. The pastel colored light started to pull my mind or maybe even my soul to its center. I started to watch the light begin to flow around a vertex as if it were setting up some sort of scene that would make me understand everything and anything around me. I found my eyes begin to squint hoping not to miss any of the show in front of me. I dared not look back at the robin I assumed was doing the same because I did not want to miss the chance of finally finding out why I was allowed to take my first breath. Then my phone rang and all that was displayed in front of me went away. Looking back to my arbor I had built in order to bring some beauty and serenity into my world I watched the robin disappear from its perch either upset at me for invading its world or had completed what it had originally set out to do. For a few moments I actually felt like I belonged to something I have no clue as to what it is but has always been. I went back to my real world a little more informed yet a little more frustrated because I was forced to do so. The next morning as I was mowing my lawn I discovered a dead robin near my garden. In that second I understood what the robin had known as it was basking in the sun. All the problems of our lives mean nothing because we are simply a part of time that will continue long after our moment is over. I buried the robin in my garden and continued my life in a more serene manner. The concept of observing doesn’t have to come with age. It surrounds us all. We just have to be receptive of what it is. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ The Life of Trees and Botanicals YORK On Friday, April 12, 5-7 p.m. there will be an opening reception of the York Art Association April show: The Life of Trees and Botanicals, with Featured Artist Rowland Bryant. The artwork will be viewable and available for purchase in the gallery from April 4 through June 2, Friday through Sunday noon – 5 p.m. Trees and other botanicals play a deep and very important role in our every day lives, whether you are aware of their impact or not. They have been an integral subject in artwork as long as artwork has been around. This exhibit explores the usage of and a deeper look at trees and botanicals as a subject. Member artists dive deep into texture, color and contrast, the cycles of the seasons; both macro and micro explorations and how we interact with it all in our lives. Rowland Bryant, a recent transplant to York from the amazing Hudson Valley in New York, currently lives with his girlfriend and their rescue Yorkie and Silky Terrier dogs. Born in Woodbury, New Jersey, across the river from Philadelphia, Rowland started painting at age 12 and did numerous portraits in Wildwood, NJ. After working as an electrician on submarines for 20 years, Row-

land left the profession to purchase, renovate and operate the Iran Allen House Bed & Breakfast in Sutherland, Vermont for 10 years. While there he honed his culinary skills, treating his guests to his tasty creations. Rowland bounced from Vermont to Cambridge, NY then to Saugerties, NY before finally landing here in York, painting all along the way. Join us at the artists reception on April 12 to be treated to a collection of Rowland’s prized works.

The legislation, LD 630, sponsored by Representative Craig Hickman (D-Winthrop), aligns the definition of hemp in state law with the definition in federal law as outlined in the 2018 Farm Bill and clarifies that hemp-derived food products or additives are no longer considered adulterated under state law and may be sold. “I am glad we were able to take steps to rectify this issue, and I applaud Representative Hickman for his leadership,” said Governor Mills. “This bill will allow for the safe and legal commercial sale and use of CBD products and support the continued growth of the legal hemp in-

People need access to the foods of their choosing for their own well-being. Dr. Davidson will present an interactive program to demonstrate proper body mechanics, especially those related to gardening activities. There will be instructions on how to avoid low back pain by using safe bending, lifting, pulling, pushing and turning techniques using common gardening tools. There will be time for individuals to ask questions regarding specific problems and physical challenges in gardening. The presentation begins at 1 p.m. and will be held at the Parish Hall of the First Parish Church, 180 York Street in York. The public is invited to attend. There is a suggested $5 donation for non-members. For further information about the Old York Garden Club, visit www.oldyorkgardenclub.org.

Health & Fitness Hospital Offers Two New Services for Adults 65 years and Older YORK York Hospital is pleased to announce two new services to better serve our community members who are 65 years of age or older, the Center for Older Adults and Older Adult House Calls Program. These services provide a more comprehensive consultation than would be possible at a regular primary care visit with the patient’s convenience in mind. The Center for Older Adults provides a comprehensive outpatient consult service — for older adults who often need more time, or more frequent visits, than a regular primary care visit. An interdisciplinary team of medical, nursing, rehab, nutrition, pharmacy and behavioral medicine, is available to our older adult population who have begun to experience functional decline within the past year and/ or are beginning to struggle at home. Providers Elizabeth Castillo MD, PhD and Barbara Roberge GNP, PhD, stay in close communication with the patient’s primary care provider with a goal of supporting the comprehensive care of their older adult patients. The House Calls Pro-

gram provides highly skilled nurse practitioner home visits to adults 65 years and older, who are having a difficult time traveling into the provider’s office due to a functional or cognitive limitation. House Calls nurse practitioner, Erin Morgan provides a higher level of medical care, including the expertise to diagnose and treat acute and chronic diseases; perform blood tests and interpret lab results; and prescribe and manage medications and other therapies. For patient criteria and to learn more, visit www.yorkhospital.com, call 207-351-2371 for the Center for Older Adults, and Erin Morgan, AGPCNP at 207646-4663 for Older Adult House Calls. The Weekly

~ News ~ BUSINESS & FINANCE To H2B Visa Employers: Cap Raised by 30,000

STATEWIDE From the Department of Homeland Security-The H-2B nonimmigrant visa program allows U.S. employers who meet specific statutory and regulatory requirements to bring foreign nationals to the United States to fill temporary non-agricultural jobs. There is a statutory cap on the total number of foreign nationals who may be issued an H-2B visa or otherwise granted

H-2B status during a fiscal year. Under section 214(g)(1)(B) and 214(g)(10) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, as amended (INA), Congress has set the H-2B cap at 66,000 per fiscal year, with a maximum of 33,000 available during the first half of any given fiscal year and 33,000 for workers who begin employment in the second half of the fiscal year. dated Appropriations Act, 2019, was signed into law by the President on February 15, 2019. This fiscal year, for the third year in a row, Congress delegated to the Secretary of Homeland Security the authority to allocate visas above the 66,000 cap if the Secretary determines, after consultation with the Secretary of Labor, that the needs of American businesses could not be satisfied with U.S workers who are willing, qualified, and able to perform temporary nonagricultural labor. After consultation with Secretary Acosta and carefully weighing several factors, including whether U.S. workers may be harmed, and impact statements from your constituents, Secretary Nielsen has decided to allocate an additional 30,000 H-2B

visas for the remainder of fiscal year 2019. Further, this supplemental visa allocation will be available only to applicants who have held H-2B status in at least one of the past three fiscal years (2016, 2017 and 2018). Details on eligibility and filing requirements will be available in the temporary final rule and on uscis.gov when the final temporary rule is posted for public inspection. As Secretary Nielsen has

“Love is the Maine Ingredient”

Several years ago, I had some close friends over for Easter dinner and they brought over this easy to make pie for Easter dinner, and I thought I would share it with you. They are Greek, and they told me that they make this pie for most holidays. I make it a couple times a year and all who eat it, just love this unique pie when served as a side dish because it is so light and fluffy.

Ingredients: 3 extra large eggs 2 teaspoons of good pure vanilla extract ¾ cup of powdered sugar, plus 3 to 4 tablespoons for garnish The Zest if a large orange, save a couple tablespoons for garnish after cooking A 15 oz container of whole milk Ricotta cheese 1/3 of a cup of toasted pine nuts ½ half cup of cooked short grain rice ¾ stick if unsalted butter, melted 6 sheets of fresh or frozen Phyllo thawed

Directions: 1} Blend ¾ cup of powdered sugar, your eggs, Vanilla, orange zest, and ricotta cheese in your blender or food processor, until nice and smooth. Pour into bowl and stir in the cooked rice and Pine nuts, set aside. 2} Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.

3} Lightly butter a 9-inch glass pie plate, lay 1 Phyllo sheet over the plate, shape to the bottom of the dish and over the sides of the plate, let extra crust overhang the plate. Brush the entire phyllo crust with your melted butter. Lay your second crust over the first crust but going in a different direction, the first north to south and second east to vest. the remaining crust and butter each until all used up. Be sure to lightly firm the crust on the bottom in plate. 4} Slowly pour in the Ricotta mixture into the pie plate. Carefully fold the overhanging layers of dough over the top of the filling to enclose the pie filling completely. Brush the remaining butter on the top of the phyllo crust that covers the filling. 5} bake the pie until the phyllo crust is golden brown, fluffy and the filling has set, about 30 to 35 minutes. Place the pie on a cooling rack and cool completely. Sprinkle or sift the powdered sugar over the pie and your ready to serve. The pie can be made the night before and refrigerated for the Easter dinner, if your using the oven to cook the main meal in it. Enjoy!

Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

Safe Haven Humane Society

WELLS When Cod and Starfish were surrendered to Safe Haven, they must have been confused. One moment they were home with their human family, and suddenly for no apparent reason they were in a totally different environment. Confused? Scared? You bet! That’s why our volunteers do all they can to make a cat’s transition as stressfree as possible. Luckily, Cod and Starfish settled in nicely. As lifelong companions, they still had each other for this new adventure. These healthy, friendly three year-olds are lovely black and white. Cod has more white on her cute head, and Starfish has more black markings. Both are blessed with good health and friendly personalities. Cod really loves chasing the laser light, while Starfish prefers to observe. Once they get more familiar with you, they start rolling on their backs, reaching out for your affection and will be

lovely additions to your family. They’d prefer to be the only kitties, and older children are more suitable because sudden movements startle them. Once settled in your home and feeling safe, they’ll blossom and shower you with love and companionship. FMI 207-646-1611. The kitties at Safe Haven’s shelter are loving this time of

Blixx Horses Receives Gratitude Grant KENNEBUNK Blixx Horses recently received a grant from Elks National Foundation, Sanford Lodge #1470. The $500 grant will fund a 5-day program and benefit several Veterans from Sanford Vet Center. It was presented to Director, Gabriela Rodriguez Quinn, Director of BlixxHorses by Elks representative Bob Shaw who visited the facility with his daughter and met the horses who will be interacting with participants. The program is designed specifically as a non riding program that helps people experience horses, promoting stewardship and keeping horses in good care for life as a foundation of horse ownership. This adds a sense of security for participants who are assured that the horses are in good care and will be pres-

ent during future visits. The focus will be on participants needs, particularly in dealing with everyday stress effectively to reduce anxiety levels with help from the horses. Allison Fish LCSW, from Sanford Vet Center had the opportunity to spend time with the horses and recognized their ability to calm when not stressed by traditional use and by living in a calming environment. She was also impressed by reactions of participants during a visit and asked the organization to partner in a program. Interestingly, horses react to stress similarly to humans. BlixxHorses a 501(c)3 Educational organization providing interactive, therapeutic non-riding programs and is recognized for unique, innovative work in the community since 2007. The

organization is the first in New England to provide these type programs and one of the first in the country.

Why You Should Get A Mutt “Mutt and “mongrel have long had negative connotations, but there’s no need to turn one’s nose at mixed breed dogs. Dogs of any kind, regardless of lineage, can be cherished companions who offer years of tireless love and affection. In fact, mutts have gained steam as dogs of choice thanks to new, more trendy monikers, such as “designer dogs or “crossbred pups. In addition, many well-recognized purebreed dogs popular today were likely once amalgams of different breeds that were carefully crafted to acquire the desireable traits of popular breeds. Many mixed-breed dogs are beautiful, well-behaved pets. The American Veterinary Medical Association states that 36.5 percent of American households have dogs. Many of those pooches are mixed-breed dogs. Here’s a look at what can make mutts stand-out pets. Healthy pup: Mixed-breed dogs may not be prone to genetic diseases specific to one particu-

lar breed and may be less likely to develop an inherited disorder. According to Dog Reference, something called “hybrid vigor explains how a mutt’s mixed ancestry makes it hardier and more robust. The average lifespan of a mutt is longer than that of most purebred canines. This doesn’t replace the need for quality veterinary care, however. Life-saving choice: Animal shelters are often bursting at the seams with mutts. Choosing to adopt a mixed-breed dog can reduce overpopulation and ensure that dogs will not be euthanized. Affordability: Mutts are typically more affordable than pure breeds because a person is not paying for lineage, show titles and AKC registration. Some mutts actually may be free if a family is giving away puppies. Unique qualities: No two mixed-breed dogs are the same — even among litter mates. That individuality can be an advantage. Moderated traits: Many purebreed dogs were bred to serve specific purposes of the breed. A Border Collie, for example, is designed to herd and requires rigorous exercise to remain healthy both physically and mentally. Stripped of that See MUTT page 35...

Collins Meets with Leadership from Maine Veterans’ Homes New Sewer Superintendent in Kittery WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Susan Collins recently met with Kelley Kash and Deb Fournier, the CEO and COO of Maine Veterans’ Homes, in her Washington, D.C. office to discuss the compassionate care their organization provides for veterans throughout the state. Senator Collins is a member of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs (MilCon-VA) Appropriations Subcommittee. “Maine Veterans’ Homes provides veterans with the high-quality care and support they have earned through their service to our country, said Senators Collins. “I had a productive conversation with Kelley and Deb about the challenges Maine Veterans’ Homes faces and ways we can work to-

gether to solve these issues, ensuring Maine’s veterans continue to receive the health care they deserve. Following Senator Collins’ advocacy, Maine received a $50 million grant last year from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to construct a new 138-bed facility to replace an older facility on Cony Road in Augusta. Work on the new facility began last month and is

expected to open in 2021. Maine Veterans’ Homes was established by the Maine Legislature in 1977 to provide long-term care services to Maine’s veterans and eligible family members. The organization continues to operate as an independent, nonprofit organization. Maine Veterans’ Homes has locations in Augusta, Caribou, Scarborough, South Paris, Bangor, and Machias.

York County Shelter Programs Receives United Way Grant ALFRED York County Shelter Programs has been awarded a oneyear grant of $20,000 from the United Way of York County. Half of the grant will go towards psychiatric services for homeless adults who do not have health insurance; the other half will go to YCSP’s food pantry. “We are so grateful to receive this support from United Way, said Bob Dawber, YCSP’s Chief Executive Officer. “They have been a longtime supporter of our agency, and this grant money will go a long way towards helping the people we serve. YCSP offers a comprehensive range of services to home-

less individuals and families; the agency works to help people make changes that will enable them to create better lives. Besides emergency shelter, YCSP provides addiction and mental health treatment and services, job training, and permanent housing solutions. YCSP also has a food pantry that serves thousands of people every month. The United Way of York County, which receives donations from individuals, businesses and organizations, “invests in community programs such as YCSP. This year the United Way is assisting 58 programs. “Thanks to the generosi-

ty of those who support United Way’s work throughout the year we are able to provide continued and much needed support for essential and direct human services right here in our county, said Barb Wentworth, United Way of York County’s CEO and president. “These important programs support the best start for our youngest citizens, provide healthy foods for children and seniors, engage youth in meaningful service and meet basic needs – all critical components of our collective efforts to build an even stronger York County. For more information, visit www.ycspi.org or www.buildcommunity.org.

KITTERY The Town of Kittery is pleased to announce the hiring of Timothy Babkirk to the role of Sewer Superintendent. Babkirk will be replacing George Kathios, who is retiring after over 24 successful years in Kittery. Babkirk was selected from over thirty applicants. He brings a wealth of experience in both the collection and treatment operations of wastewater. Prior to coming to Kittery, he served in the city of Portsmouth, most recently as chief plant operator for the Pierce Island and Pease plants. In

2016, he was tasked with focusing his attention on the Pierce Island plant including overseeing the plant upgrade for the city. In his eight years in the wastewater industry, Babkirk’s work ethic and commitment to environmental protection has propelled his career forward from truck driver to chief plant operator, all while successfully receiving his Grade 4 Wastewater license and Grade 2 Collection license. Please welcoming Babkirk to the Town of Kittery, as well as congratulating Kathios on a well-deserved retirement.

LearningWorks Receives Grant YORK COUNTY LearningWorks announced that it has been awarded a one-year grant from United Way of York County totaling $4,050. This investment will benefit their Service Works program, which uses a restorative justice framework to mentor corrections-involved youth through transformative, community based volunteer projects. Service Works provides a positive alternative to juvenile justice system involvement for youth and young adults. We employ restorative practices to create positive connections to the community and successful experiences in meaningful work. Participants spend time writing about their experiences, reflecting on their behavior, and giving back by volunteering at local food pantries, serving community meals, rehabilitating public spaces, and more. Through the mobilization of people, resources, and expertise, United Way of York County works to improve lives across

York County. Thanks to the continued support of dedicated individuals, businesses, and organizations across the region, this year the United Way is investing in 58 community programs that serve children, youth, adults, and families. “Thanks to the generosity of those who support United Way’s work throughout the year, we are able to provide continued and much needed support for essential and direct human services right here in our county, noted United Way of York County President & CEO Barb Wentworth. “These important programs support the best start for our youngest citizens, provide healthy foods for children and seniors, engage youth in meaningful service, and meet basic needs - all critical components of our collective efforts to build an even stronger York County. To learn more about United Way of York County, visit buildingcommunity.org or call 207985-3359.

~ News & Classifieds ~ Celebrating Reading With Dr. Seuss’ Birthday WELLS Wells Elementary School held its annual Celebration of Reading Day as part of the NEA’s Read Across America Day, established around the March 2nd birthday of Dr. Seuss, a pen name for Theodor Seuss Geisel who authored numerous children’s books including “The Cat in the Hat. Invited guests were assigned classrooms to visit and share their love of reading with students by reading aloud one or two of their favorite children’s books. Thirty-nine community members attended at various times throughout the day to reinforce the importance and joy of reading, not only in school but at home. Guest readers included teachers, former teachers, parents, students and representatives from the Wells Fire Department, Wells Police Department, People’s United Bank, York Hospital, Ogunquit Rotary Club, and the Wells Public Library which hosted a “Dr. Seuss party for all first ...MUTT from page 30 primary job, a dog might be destructive or become depressed. Comprised of different breeds, a mutt may have a less intense drive to fulfill its breed standards, perhaps making it a more easygoing pet. Trendy: Thanks to puggles and labradoodles, it’s now chic to have a mutt. Mixed-breed dogs can be the ideal puppy pets and can be a first stop in one’s search for a new canine pal. The Weekly Sentinel does not endorse any products or services suggested by third-party sources. ...TOOL from page 20 way toward helping families afford to pay their electric bill, cover an emergency car repair, or even put food on the table week to week, said Robyn Merrill, executive director at Maine Equal Justice. “A little extra income can be really important for kids’ stability and growth. “Filing your taxes is the only way to claim benefits such as the EITC or other credits that offset the cost of necessities such as child care and housing, said Garrett Martin, executive director at MECEP. “Today, some Mainers could be eligible for up to $5,000 in state and federal refunds. Even those families who earned very little money last year should file their taxes to avoid leaving money on the table. For further information contact Maine Equal Justice at www.mejp.org or the Maine Center for Economic Policy at www.mecep.org.

and second-grade students in the school’s library. “Celebration of Reading Day is always a wonderful day for the students, staff and the guest readers, commented WOCSD Community Resource Coordinator, Maryanne Foley who coordinated the event. “Having the community involved in promoting the importance of reading gives the students a different perspective. We love having visitors come in to celebrate reading. One reader used an interesting way to reach students. Kyle Burnell, a third-grade teacher at WES, and his wife Eileen Brazer Burnell, a teacher at Eliot Elementary School, connected classrooms via FaceTime so that she could read to his students on a class projection screen.

Members of the Wells Rotary Club visited the Wells Junior High School school for about an hour and read in various classrooms. One of the Rotarians read “We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by author and illustrator Ryan T. Higgins whose mother, Deb Sheppard, teaches fifth grade at WJHS.
