Kennebunk and Kennebunkport Police Provide Greater Presence at Local Schools

KENNEBUNK – School officials in Maine Regional School Unit (RSU) 21 and local law enforcement agencies recently combined resources to develop methods to provide increased safety to the community’s students. Public safety officials in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport have begun collaborating with school administrators in RSU 21 to create a greater police presence at Kennebunkport Consolidated School, Kennebunk Elementary School (KES) and Sea Road School, which, unlike both the middle and high schools, do not have an assigned School Resource Officer (SRO). In Kennebunk, police
sought out office space at KES and Sea Road School, providing officers with a location to complete reports and conduct administrative duties while, at the same time, maintaining a school presence and interacting with staff and students. In Kennebunkport, officers make daily visits to the school, often spending a few moments in classrooms or the cafeteria, interacting with students and staff. Both of these strategies provide a greater police presence at the schools, with no additional cost to the taxpayer. RSU 21 Superintendent of Schools Andrew Dolloff gives much of the credit for the new ideas to Kennebunk Police
Chief Robert McKenzie and Kennebunkport Police Chief Craig Sanford. “We have been vigilant about school safety and have a very good working relationship with our public safety officials, but following the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., we took another look at how we could minimize the likelihood of a similar event here. Chief McKenzie and Chief Sanford were eager to help, and they each came up with ideas that provide greater visibility of officers without costing the towns or the schools a dime.” Officials agree this can sometimes be difficult to acSee POLICE page 3...

Force Association’s Cadet of the Year Award by Maj. Robert Gilbert, Highlanders Cadet Squadron Commander. The presentation was made during a Civil Air Patrol (CAP) squadron meeting in Rochester. Piazza, 16, was recognized as an outstanding facilitator and mentor for cadet staff. The squadron has experienced steady growth since last June, when Piazza became cadet commander.
Piazza’s focus for the squadron was recruitment and retention. Applying Civil Air Patrol core values of integrity, volunteer service, excellence and respect, he worked to develop a way of engaging cadets that would benefit their personal growth and excellence. Mike Hall, a New Hampshire Wing Recruiting Officer, said, “The retention issue is a See PIAZZA page 8...
