Marking Earth Day at Wells Reserve WELLS Celebrate Earth Day a few days early at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm with an annual appreciation of nature, science, and the planet. Visit the reserve on Friday, April 19, for a family-friendly, free event co-hosted by the Wells Reserve and the Planeteers of Southern Maine. The heart of the celebration is an Earth Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. More than 30 organizations will be on hand, offering activities and information about wildlife, plants, water, energy, conservation, and much more. Loads of earthy crafts, games, and activities are lined up to keep kids busy and adults

amused. There will be music in the air, with Matt Loosigian, Scot Stinson, and Tony Michaud each performing a set of songs and tunes. Children’s book author Jean Flahive will inspire learning about the Earth through storytelling. Additional morning activities include a 2-hour bird walk led by York County Audubon at 8 a.m., a clean-up on Laudholm Beach at 9 a.m., and a docent-led nature walk at 11 a.m. Lunch will be offered for sale. The KK&W Water District will bring water bubblers and hand out reusable water bottles (while supplies last) to people who pledge to switch from single-use plastic bottles.

The event gains inspiration from science and, in particular, biologist and author Rachel Carson, who said, “The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.” The simple query “What would Rachel do?” will inform many of the actions taken by exhibitors and attendees. The organizers are aiming for a zero-waste day. The Earth Fair receives key support from the Kennebunk Conservation Commission, Alternative Education students at Kennebunk High School, See EARTH page 4...

Local Communities Pitch in with Earth Day Cleanup Events YORK COUNTY First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day has grown to become an international day of environmental awareness and now includes events in more than 193 countries. Although officially celebrated on April 22, many groups, schools, organizations and individuals throughout the state of Maine are doing their part by volun-

Diggs Places First in Tech Challenge WELLS In early March, the Wells-Ogunquit CSD School Committee recognized Emanuel (Manny) Diggs, a Wells High School 11th grade student also studying automotive technology at Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS) for placing first in the Universal Technical Institute’s Top Tech Challenge on February 9. Diggs and his teammate placed first among 36 two-person teams from New England competing in a demonstration of their automotive

skills and knowledge. Presenting a Certificate of Recognition to Diggs on March 6 for “exemplary achievement” was WOCSD Superintendent Jim Daly and Committee Chair Helena Ackerson. Both Manny and his teammate received a $10,000 scholarship to attend UTI which has been described as a “leading provider of technical training for students seeking entry-level careers as technicians in the transportation industry.” Diggs’ team also won $4,000 and a toolbox for PATHS.

WELLS Biologist Logan Maxwell recently completed her master’s work at UNH. Her research focused on ways climate change affects birds along the seascoast. Her aim was to figure out how saltmarsh birds might adapt to this changing environment. Birds that live in our saltmarshes are seriously impacted by lunar high tides and are the leading cause of nest failure. Saltmarsh nesting

SOUTH BERWICK The South Berwick Community Garden is looking for about six to eight South Berwick residents who would like to have a plot of their own. The 20-year-old community garden off Willow Road in Agamenticus Estates has boxes that are about 5-feet by 10-feet and cost $15 for the entire summer season. “This is your little piece of land to do what you want with, said Mimi Demers, garden coordinator. Gardeners grow everything from blueberries and sunflowers to radishes, garlic and other vegetables.

birds are extremely vulnerable to even slight increases in sea level. Logan will share her findings at the Mather Auditorium at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm on Tuesday, April 16 at 7 p.m. Logan is an engaging speaker who relates well to a diverse audience who promises to give everyone a better understanding of factors concerning birders, motivating biologists, and threatening the saltmarsh birds. This program is free and open to the public. Come early for refreshments and social time.

Water, wheelbarrows and a selection of tools are available at the garden. Members meet once in the spring at Town Hall and once at the end of the season for a pot luck at the garden. Three of the garden’s plots are dedicated to raising food for the Maine Harvest for Hunger, a program of the Maine Cooperative Extension Service, and members take turns tending to these plots. ~ News ~ Marshwood Participates in Odyssey of the Mind

Live life without limitations!

SOUTH BERWICK On March 16 there was a whirlwind of creativity, competition, and fun at the Annual Maine Odyssey of the Mind (OM) Discovery Regional Competition at Biddeford High School. Five teams from Marshwood Schools competed in the tournament. There were two Marshwood Great Works School teams, two Marshwood Middle School teams, and one Central School team. OM Teams from around southern Maine met, supported, and challenged one other for a day of long term and spontaneous problem solving. It’s a high-energy beginning to an exciting season of creative problem solving, fun, and teamwork. “OM is important because you get to work on problem solving as a team,” said participant Zooey LaFlamme. The Marshwood Great Works teams (pictured above) and one Middle School team qualified for the State Finals on Saturday, April 6 at Biddeford High School and all have their sights on the World Finals held at Michigan State University in May. Grace Jacobs, Marshwood Gifted Specialist, coordinated the GWS team efforts. Danielle Breton and Angie Gilbert coached the fourth grade team that took on Problem 3 Leonardo’s Workshop and placed in their division. This was their first experience working as a team. They had volunteer assistance from Alison Richards and Kate DeLois. The team mates are: Sophia St. Cyr, Mabel Emery, Ozzie Gilbert, Emily Keith, Judah Curry, Baylor Horvath and Leah Richards.

Bethany Grogg coached the fifth grade team with Eric Waddell and David D’Aran volunteering. This team has worked together other years really creating a strong bond and the ability to work excepSee ODYSSEY page 9...

Cuba Photo Exhibit and Talk at the Library BERWICK Photographer Robert Ortiz will talk about photographing Cuba on April 24 at 6 p.m. at the the Berwick Public Library, 103 Old Pine Hill Road. The photographs reflects Ortiz’s Cuban heritage in the people, streets, cars, and buildings of Havana and other locations in Cuba. Time stands still in Havana, since Castro’s revolution in 1959. It is a city showing the wear and tear of

time with its paint-peeling Art Deco architecture and old cars. But the classic Spanish influence in old Havana, crumbing from lack of maintenance, is still majestic. Ortiz is an American citizen, but his heritage is Cuban. “My parents met each other in 1958 after leaving Cuba for a better life in the United States, said Ortiz. “However, in 1960, soon after I was born, my father returned to Cuba to take care of my ailing grandmother,

so I grew up in a Cuban family without a father. For many years, I didn’t understand why

North Berwick Historical Society Celebrates Emily Dickinson NORTH BERWICK The American poet Emily Dickinson has always been the mystery woman of literature with her reclusive ways, unique style and multitude of poems on death and immortality. ily swept through the 56-year life of the poet from her own words. Miss Mulholland played the part of Emily Dickinson with a dashing flair and obvious grasp of the poet’s inner soul. She read from many of Miss Dickinson’s 1,776 poems and from the poet’s multitude of letters. The production was interspersed with a distinctive selection of Dickinson poems that were put to music by the trio Mosaic, comprised of Vicki Adams, David O’Brien and Karen Stathoplos. Ginny Lawrence accompanied the group on piano and Kim Kraus tied everything together as the narrator. Kraus effortlessly took on the characters of Dickinson’s gentlemen friends as he read their letters to Dickinson with a deep and sultry tone. The enthusiastic audience erupted in a standing ovation as the production came to a climax. Miss Mulholland graciously answered questions from the audience on Dickinson’s life following the performance.

local artist Amy Audet and her collection called “Catching the Moment”. Raised in Wakefield, MA, and now a permanent resident of Wells, Amy Audet has been a long-time lover of the outdoors in all types of weather. “Nature has amazed me as long as I can remember,” said Audet. “I love that nature is momentary and constantly changing.” Audet attempts to capture all the senses in her paintings: the feel, smells, sounds, light, and color. Transforming her seasonal cottage to a year-round residence in 2013, Audet was able to spend more time on the estuary and beach for painting inspiration. Working primarily with pastels on “sanded” surfaces and occasionally in oil paints, she has been experimenting with plein air painting in studio from moments captured in photos. While she enjoys typical meditation, there is nothing more quieting yet joyous to Audet than to be immersed in painting. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be provided at the reception and all are welcome.

SIS Bank Announces New Name and Logo YORK COUNTY SIS Bank is pleased to announce that it is changing its name to: Partners Bank of New England. The name change will officially occur on July 1. SIS Bank has been a longstanding community partner to Sanford and surrounding communities in southern Maine and the New Hampshire seacoast. As “The Bank That Listens®”, the Bank’s top priority is to respond to the financial needs of its customers and community members. Based on two years of market research, it was determined that the brand identity of SIS should better reflect the Bank’s personal approach to banking that its customers and community members have come to know and expect. The SIS Bank Board of Directors chose “Partners Bank” as the new identity for SIS to convey what the Bank has always been to its customers: a true partner to the individuals and businesses it serves. There have been no buyouts and no

mergers. There has been no change either in the management team of SIS Bank or in its Board. SIS intends to remain a locally based, independent community bank dedicated to the communities it serves. SIS Bank and its employees support many local organizations and nonprofits with significant donations and volunteer efforts each year. To reinforce its commitment, going forward the Bank will increase its donations and economic development budget to 10% of its net income, a 67% increase over previous years. “Our new name will give us a stronger identity as we expand into new markets and continue to develop mutual goals and long-term relationships with our customers and communities,” states President & CEO of

SIS Bank Blaine Boudreau. “As Partners Bank, we will continue to offer superior customer service, competitive products and a true concern for the well-being of our customers. We will continue to give back to the communities we serve. We certainly could not be The Bank That Listens without our loyal customers. Renaming the Bank will help us to continue our legacy throughout our markets. We are excited for this important change to better connect with our customers, and we hope you will be, too!” The rebranding was announced to all Bank employees and Corporators at the Bank’s annual meeting on March 27, 2019. With its new name and brand identity, the Bank will launch a new and improved website and online/mobile banking platform.

Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services Receives National Recognition AUGUSTA On Tuesday, February 26, the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services (MBVS) received the 2019 Abraham Lincoln Pillar of Excellence Award from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for its work to end Veteran homelessness. This is the Bureau’s second consecutive Pillar of Excellence Award, having been recognized previously for its Veteran suicide prevention efforts in 2018. Since 2011, the VA has recognized its state partners for programs and initiatives that support Veterans in their respective states. This year’s Pillar of Excellence Award was presented to MBVS Acting Director David A. Richmond by NASDVA President Alfie Alvarado-Ramos and VA Undersecretary Randy Reeves, standing in for Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie at the 2019 National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs (NASDVA) Mid-Winter Conference held in Alexandria, VA. All fifty states are represented as members of NASDVA as well as the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

Maine was one of just six states to receive a Pillar of Excellence Award this year. MBVS Acting Director Richmond shared the following regarding the significance of the recognition: “It is truly an honor for the Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services to receive this award. However, there are many other partner organizations in Maine that we work with every day on this important mission; this award is a direct reflection of their efforts as well. The Bureau strives to support Maine’s most vulnerable Veteran population and their families with professional support, compassion, and respect. Our Homeless Veterans Coordinator, Jarad Greeley, who is also a U.S. Army Veteran, serves as a conduit between MBVS, Maine’s homeless Veterans, and our partner organizations. He works tirelessly to remove the barriers to Veterans securing stable housing and support. “The Bureau has forged great partnerships with the Maine Homeless Veteran Action Committee; the Homeless Team at VA Togus; Easterseals; Preble Street; Veterans Inc.; Volunteers of America

Northern New England; Maine Elks; Betsy Ann Ross House of Hope; Bread of Life Ministries; United Veterans of Maine, Inc.; the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars; Gary Owens House; and other shelters, agencies, and caseworkers around the state. Our shared goal is to end Veteran homeless-

ness in Maine, one Veteran at a time.” If you know a homeless Veteran who needs assistance, contact Jarad Greeley at 207430-6036 (office), 207-699-7186 (cell), or jarad.greeley@maine. gov. There are also resources available on the bureau’s website at www.maine.gov.

tion services for up to 40 low-income homeowners each year at no cost to the homeowner. The weatherization program leverages Efficiency Maine rebates to provide homeowners with professional air sealing and insulation. Keep York County Warm! provides LED bulbs, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and low flow devices. Volunteers also build and install an average of six interior storm window inserts for each home, saving $16 in energy costs per window each year. The weatherization program assists many households to make it through the cold weather season – and the years ahead – by adding interior storm windows, sealing cracks and making other improvements that reduce heat loss and save money on energy bills. Since 2014, the program weatherized homes in 27 of the 29 York County communities. “The Hudson Foundation grant funding will leverage the opportunities Keep York County Warm! offers to improve energy efficiency and directly make a positive impact on low-income families and seniors in York County by reducing their heating and cooling costs, and improving health and safety issues.” said Amy Nucci, Habitat for Humanity of York County’s Executive Director. “We continue to look for better ways to assist residents in York County who struggle with high heating bills and unhealthy homes.” Habitat has many opportunities to volunteer on projects, in the office, or with special events. Anyone interested in participating or donating to the local Habitat is encouraged to call the office at 207-985-4850 or visit www.habitatyorkcounty.org.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

BERWICK In Berwick, around the corner from downtown, there is a unique center that is offering locals a place to practice selfcare in the community. Whole Heart Therapies was formed in 2018 by Mistee Boyd, an Es-

describes the origin story. She realized the impact could be much greater by creating a center for many healers to combine energies and practices. Today, Whole Heart Therapies services hundreds of clients and fills up over two dozen

workshops in the course of any given month. Services include treatments that folks are generally familiar with such as yoga classes, massage therapy, aroma therapy, and foot soaks, but other treatments are unique for most visitors. Are you familiar with cupping, radionics, shamanic healing, castor oil packs or bowenwork? Even if these unique sounding healing methods are not mainstream, that has not stopped Whole Heart Therapies from building a loyal following in their first year of business. Mainers are well known for practicality and resourcefulness, and many are looking away from conventional pharmaceutical medicine, so it’s no surprise that the center’s holistic approach has found traction. To celebrate the one year mark – the center will host an Open House at 8 Wilson Street in Berwick on Sunday, April 14, 12-4 p.m. “We will open our doors to the community we are blessed to be a part of in celebration. Health & Fitness $2.3 Million Grant to Combat Opioid Epidemic WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME) announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded the State

of Maine $2.3 million to help combat the opioid epidemic. The State Opioid Response grants are administered by HHS’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) and aim

to address the opioid crisis by increasing medication-assisted treatment. “No community is immune from this heartbreaking epidemic that has taken a toll on far too many of our peers, friends, and

Maine Summer Camps For Grieving Children STATEWIDE This summer, August 19-24, at Camp Manitou in Oakland (boys) and Camp Somerset in Smithfield (girls), children from New England will come together to spend a week at the “Manitou Experience for Boys” and the “Somerset Experience for Girls”, respectively. Experience Camps provide free, one-week camps for children who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or primary caregiver. Along with swimming, arts and crafts, and team sports, the kids take part in bereavement activities including sharing circles where they are encouraged to talk about their grief. Camps are currently accepting referrals and applica-

tions for boys entering grades 4-12 and girls entering grades 4-8 in the 2019-2020 school year. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 1.5 million children are living in a single-family household because of the death of one parent. Grieving children are at higher risk than their non-grieving peers for depression, anxiety, poor school attendance or dropping out, isolation, behavior problems, lowered academic achievement, drug and/or alcohol abuse, incarceration or suicide.

Experience Camps are free one-week camps for boys and girls who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or primary caregiver. It’s a place where kids can laugh, cry, play, create, remember the person who died, or forget the grief that weighs them down. It’s a place where they can feel “normal”, because everyone there has been through something similar and understands what it’s like to lose someone important to them. neighbors” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “This important funding continues Maine’s efforts to fight the opioid crisis by expanding access to treatment and recovery support services.” HHS has released a total of $500 million of the $1.5 billion State Opioid Response grants. The remaining $1 billion in grant funding will be released in September. The funding provided by HHS was authorized through the 21st Century Cures Act, which was championed by Senators Col-

In 2017, overdoses claimed the life of more than one Mainer per day, making this one of the top causes of death in the state. In 2016, there were more than 63,600 drug overdose deaths nationally. “Big Surprise!! A great meal Reviewed March 4, 2012

Not only is this place reasonably priced, along with that you get great atmosphere and wonderful service. The lobster was steamed to perfection, the prime rib was medium rare which was exactly what I ordered and even the homemade mashed potatoes were excellent and I NEVER order potatoes when eating a large meal. ~ News ~ Seniors Named Presidential Scholar Candidates SOUTH BERWICK Berwick Academy is pleased to announce seniors Mahesh Agarwal of Exeter, NH and Abi Wool of Portsmouth, NH have been named among the 4,000 candidates in the 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 3.6 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2019. Approximately twenty females and twenty males are selected as candidates from each state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and from families of U.S. citizens living abroad based on SAT and ACT scores. Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 55th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon

graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in many areas: academic success, leadership, and service to school and community. Mahesh Agarwal has attended Berwick since first grade. He serves both as the senior class president and a permanent member of the school’s honor committee. He joined the Varsity Tennis team as a freshman and became co-captain his junior

year. A state-ranked debater with an interest in politics, Mahesh leads the debate team, competes in mock trial and is the reigning public speaking champion. A keen stargazer, he volunteers at the UNH observatory, co-leads astronomy club and is currently working on an Innovation Pursuit project exploring whether Berwick could one day build an observatory. Mahesh also participates in drama club and contributes to the school newspaper. He has received the Cogswell Book Award, won the Timothy Keller Writing Prize, and is a member of the National Spanish Honor Society. Abi Wool came to Berwick her freshman year. She is a fouryear member of the Performing Arts program at Berwick, participating in four Upper School mu-

sicals, three plays, and the dance program, and was inducted into the National Thespian Society last year. Abi also spent four years in the Youth Repertory Company at the New Hampshire Theatre Project. She co-leads Coffeehouses and Diversity Club, and is an active member of the Alliance as well as a peer tutor. She has been inducted into the National

Spanish Honor Society, and received a Departmental Recognition Award in Chemistry the fall of her junior year. Abi’s been a part of SWAT (Student Wellness Advising Team) since her junior year, and became a Head Tour Guide her senior year. Her junior year, she received the Dartmouth Book Award and was inducted into the Cum Laude Society.

Blixxhorses Hosts Unbridled and Weeklong Events

KENNEBUNK Join BlixxHorses Saturday, April 20 for their annual fundraiser Unbridled, the first event of a weeklong educational program that ends on April 26. The events will also bring awareness to the ASPCA’s designation of April as ‘Prevention of Animal Cruelty’ month and are sponsored by Kennebunk Savings. Unbridled will take place 2-4:30 p.m., 5 Portage Way, West Kennebunk. There will be music presented by duo Krystian & Adrian, food, refreshments, a silent auction, raffles and an opportunity to meet the organization’s horses. This is the 13th year of programs developed to educate people on the BlixxHorses Mission and help people experience horses and gain insight on the commitment, time, work and financial investment required to provide good care to horses. Mini events begin at 3 p.m. starting with a Welcome, followed by a Blessing of the Animals with Rev. Deb Shipp, Pastor of Christ Church, Kennebunk. Visitors who would like their animals blessed are invited to participate but are asked to keep pets away from the food and refreshments and that pets need to be on a leash or crated. On Sunday, April 21, 2-5 p.m., there will be a Spring Open

Barn that will give visitors a glimpse of horses and their environment and the day-to-day needs for proper care. Bunnies will also be featured 3-5 p.m. with Micheala Falzone, Director of Rabbit Cabinet Rescue & Sanctuary in Wells. A rabbit’s life span averages 8-12 years, require daily care but can be house trained and make wonderful companions. For more information, contact Micheala at 207432-2136 or email therabbitcabinet@gmail.com On Monday April 22, 122 p.m., visitors are welcome to come learn about horse behavior. Horses may have been born into captivity but their instincts remain wild and in certain situations, can be dangerous. Find out what subtle warnings look like. On Tuesday, April 23, 2-4 p.m. come celebrate Lexxie’s

19th birthday (pictured). Reading to horses is fun and a good way to observe their expressions. Our favorite is ‘Black Beauty’. Read, sing Happy Birthday and enjoy carrot cake. On Wednesday, April 24, 4-6 p.m. learn how to feed a horse. It’s not as easy as it sounds but is a great training opportunity that should be done properly. Learn what to do when they see you and expect food. Thursday, April 25, 2-4 p.m. trick or treat. Learn what treats are safe and why size and amounts are important as well as how to safely give a horse a treat. On Friday, April 26, 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., the final day of events commemorates the founding of the ASPCA in 1866 and there will be an interactive, educational presentation with See BLIXX page 34...

Kennebunk Announces Two Opportunities to Serve Community with local Rotary District 7780. The emphasis will be on expanding relationships with local and regional partners to increase awareness of programs related to the prevention and treatment of substance and opioid use disorders. The VISTA will work to support the continuation and expansion of these programs in our immediate community and beyond. “This position is a fantastic opportunity for someone to work directly with law enforcement and our community partners to address an issue that affects all of us either directly or indirectly, said Police Chief Robert MacKenzie. The Community Development Department is seeking an individual to serve as a Summer VISTA Associate for a 10-week period. This position will work with staff from the Community Development department, Social Services office and non-profit organizations in Town to increase access to programs that address food insecurity and poverty, as well as outreach to low-income and aging populations. “The Town of Kennebunk is fortunate to have many programs and resources in place to address these concerns.

KENNEBUNK The Town of Kennebunk announces two unique opportunities to serve your community, gain leadership experience and help pay for college. The project, a partnership between the Town of Kennebunk, Goodwill Northern New England and the Corporation for National and Community Service, will engage one full-year AmeriCorps VISTA member and one Summer Associate VISTA member to serve with the Town. AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America), is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering. Members are placed in partner agencies to build capacity and reduce poverty by creating new programs, managing advisory boards, helping with fundraising and grant writing, increasing social media presence, recruiting volunteers and supporting initiatives to provide long term positive impacts to communities. The Kennebunk Police Department is seeking an individual to serve for one year in a position working in collaboration

Safe Haven Humane Society

WELLS In the rescue world, it is not uncommon to rescue animals who’ve been abandoned for financial or family crisis reasons. These animals’ only means of survival is the kindness and watchfulness of others. Luckily for a mother cat and her kittens who were left behind for several months, a local landlord stepped in and cared for them. During that time, the mother cat gave birth to a second litter. As both litters grew older, the landlord reached out for help. Safe Haven rescued them. All are enjoying good health and lots of love at our adoption center but wait... what’s this? The vet tells us the mother cat is already pregnant with her third litter! Five months old, Groot and Apple are looking for a home together. Both are lovely and sweet.

Groot is a short-haired velvet black beauty with golden eyes. Apple (in photo) is long-haired, silver and white. Considering all they’ve been through, both are remarkably friendly and sweet once they’re familiar with you. At five months of age, they’re still just kittens. They enjoy playing together and will be happy living with cat-friendly dogs and older children. Visit both beauties at Safe Haven Adoption Center, 1420

Post Road (Route 1) in Wells. FMI: 207-646-1611. Hang out with them in our home-like free-roaming cat rooms. Maybe consider becoming a volunteer and join us in our no-kill mission. As our shelter’s population keeps growing, so does our need to feed! We always welcome donations of canned Friskies cat food, especially poultry with gravy flavors. Fancy Feast, too, which encourages older and

sick kitties to eat, and of course Temptations treats are great rewards for good behavior and confidence training. Thank you for all your generosity and support! As you know, our thrift shop supports our shelter’s financial needs. But we also need donations, either on our website or by check mailed to Safe Haven, PO Box 91, Wells,

ME 04090. Your donations of clean, working household items and clothing to our thrift shop magically turn into cash for the kitties’ health care. FMI: 207229-8314.

Emma’s Angels Voice for Animals YORK COUNTY Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the handsomest boy of all? Sir Alex is! He is a fabulous cat who brings with him the promise of being a lifelong companion to a lucky person. He is a large, neutered cat who insists on being the king of his castle so that means he must be an only pet. Because he is very friendly, a home with older children would be fine! If you would like more info on this boy, email Voice for Animals at in2catz@gmail.com.

NORTH BERWICK Our dog of the week is sweet Max! He has not found his forever home yet and deserves a great one. Max was rescued back in 2014, was adopted and returned due to a new baby. He is a calm boy who should be the only pet as he is a Shepherd/Cattle dog and has a bit of a prey drive. Dog savvy kids over 12 ok. Max is 8 years old, neutered, and up-todate on his shots. SPORTS Sherburne Selected Student-Athlete of the Month WELLS Wells High School senior Matt Sherburne was recognized on March 29 as WHS’s Student-Athlete of the Month. He received this award for his academics, sportsmanship, and performance as point guard on the Warriors Basketball team. This is Sherburne’s second time receiving this award for basket-

Kreie of the Cole Harrison Insurance Agency and Pamela Moody-Maxon of Moody Maxon Real Estate. Both businesses are sponsors of the Student-Athlete of the Month award at WHS. “We just (had) a good season, said Sherburne when asked about receiving the award. “It was fun. I think we did (well) in the month of January. Sherburne said that he plans to attend the University of Southern Maine after graduation and continue playing basketball there. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching Matt play the last 4

years, commented John Kreie. I recall his freshman year, seeing him play a little in a postseason game at the Cross Insurance Arena and thinking, wow, this kid’s going to be good. He was the kid you wanted to have the ball at the end of a tight game and he played hard for every second of every game. He’s a competitor and he led a strong Warrior basketball team to another regional championship game this year. Going to be big shoes to fill next year. He’ll be missed! According to Troy Brown, coach of the Warriors, Sherburne finished the season averaging 14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2.49 steals per game. Sherburne was named 1st Team Western Maine Conference All-Star and was selected to the McDonald’s

Traip Academy Athletics Director Honored KITTERY Michael Roberge, the longtime Assistant Principal and Athletics Director at Traip Academy in Kittery, was honored on April 4 with the Robert Boucher 7th Player Distinguished Service Award. The presentation was made during the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (MIAAA) Spring

Conference Awards Luncheon in Rockland. The Robert Boucher 7th Player Distinguished Service Award recognizes the non-traditional athletic administrator whose role at school goes outside of the already versatile job description of athletics director. Honorees are individuals who have given years of service to Maine high school athletics and to its student-athletes, and who have dedicated selflessly to their community and its athletics programs. Superintendent of Schools Eric Waddell noted that “Mike advocates passionately for students in Kittery. Whether he is expanding new programs or cultivating existing ones, Mike always makes decisions with the students’ best interest in mind. He is a shining example of a highly effective athletics director, and I am so pleased that the MIAAA has recognized him. Roberge was nominated for the award by fellow athletics director Paul True of Lake Regional High School in Naples.

Marshwood HS Interact Club Dodgeball Charity Scores Big

SOUTH BERWICK Senior Macey White brought information about how Yemen’s children are struggling in the face of a national economic crisis, widespread malnutrition and the grave threat of cholera and other lifethreatening diseases. This crisis soon came to the attention of the Interact Club and members worked together to find a way to raise money and help. The result was a charity dodgeball game pitting the Marshwood School Board against Marshwood High School student teams on Friday, March 15. The event kicked

off in a bracket style seeding pitting ten teams against one other. Some teams barely had a chance with the balls flying through the air sometimes at high speeds. Senior Makenna Janes did a great job as an MC while senior Courtney Thim and junior Katie Taran were referees. Senior Morgan Hasty kept track of the playoff brackets. After a couple hours of back and forth and a lot of laughs, the teams ended with donating $900 to “Save The Children to help the children in Yemen. The community support meant the world to these caring students.
