Andrea Collin Reigosa of Kennebunk will receive the 2018 Community Service Award.

KENNEBUNK A local 8th grader will be honored by the American Red Cross for her volunteer project which helped deliver toys to kids on Puerto Rico this past Christmas. On Thursday, April 19, at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland, Andrea Collin Reigosa of Kennebunk will receive the 2018 Community Service Award. Born in Puerto Rico, young

Andrea decided last year to collect toys for the children on the island for a school project after Hurricanes Irma and Maria hit. Determined to bring some happiness at Christmastime to children who had lost everything, she arranged to have collection boxes installed around the community. Through a friend in Puerto Rico, she made a contact with FedEx. The company had already completed its humanitarian flights but was so

impressed with the project that it added one more dubbed “Andrea’s Flight.” In all, her efforts provided more than 800 toys to Puerto Rican children. The American Red Cross will also honor Michael Bourque of Portland, president and CEO of MEMIC, with the Blood Services Award; Stewart Graham of Portland, Larissa Montminy of Auburn, and Paige Roberts of Portland with the Lifesaver Award; Dan Martins of Read-

field and Portland VA Clinic with for Service to the Armed Forces; and Operation HOPE and the Scarborough Police Department with the Community Impact Award. The American Red Cross of Maine recognizes individuals and groups who have gone above and beyond in service to others. We salute these Real Heroes and recognize that they embody the spirit that is at the very heart of the American Red Cross.

YCCC Talk a “Sign” of the Times By Nancye Tuttle Contributing Writer WELLS & ARUNDEL John Getchell, otherwise known as the Sign Guy, had a bad case of cabin fever when February 2015 arrived. To amuse himself, he bought an illuminated, portable marquee—the kind you see outside churches with warnings like “You’ve Sinned” and VFW halls to advertise bean suppers. He set it up in Arundel, on the lawn of his River Road home, came up with a few rules for messages he would post, and in large black letters spelled out his first missive: “Sign of the Apocalypse Watch This Space.”

At the start, someone asked him if he was starting a church. He replied, “Yes, the Church of the Apocalypse.” So, he had a name for his sign and it’s stuck. Getchell changes his mes-

servations like “Today Is The Tomorrow You Worried About Yesterday.” He’s become a local folk hero whose musings strike up classroom and coffee counter conversations. He’s gained regional attention with an appearance on a local TV show which chronicles some of Maine’s most interesting characters. And one message gained national acclaim recently from late night TV talk show host James Corden. OGUNQUIT Jonathan’s Ogunquit has been picked to appear on “Food Paradise, a program that highlights great venues for dining and entertainment on the Travel Channel. This is the first time Jonathan’s has been featured on a TV show, but it’s not his first

brush with fame. He was named Maine Restaurateur of the Year in 2017, and people come from all over to dine, drink, and dance at his Ogunquit fun spot, which he has owned for 41 years. “I grew up in Ogunquit, a half mile from the business, said Jonathan West. “Hospitality has been in my family since

The topic was whether Jonathan’s Ogunquit was suitable to be featured on “Food Paradise. After a few weeks of conversations and emails with the producers, Hollywood came to Ogunquit, according to a press release from the television show. “Food Paradise started in 2008 and has featured more than one hundred different eateries, restaurants, bars, and diners from all across the United States. Each episode focuses on the best places in the area for a specific cuisine or offering. The hour-long show typically features a few different venues per episode, all with a similar theme. Jonathan West, sole proprietor, is a native of Maine and currently resides on his farm in South Berwick. Many of the farm to table initiatives that are featured on Jonathan’s menu come right from his farm and garden, to which he tends to himself. He decided to expand his restaurant business in the early 1990’s and added a second floor to his once single-family home. He has now welcomed hundreds of internationally known artists, from Arlo Guthrie, Jonathan Edwards, Judy Collins, Paula Poundstone, the Indigo Girls, and now his personal friend, Maine’s very own comedian Bob

Marley. While he loves his work, West had to be patient when the Travel Channel filmed the TV episode. “They came up last November, to see a concert (Capitol Steps), West said this week. “They took pictures of several dishes. They had two camera crews, one in the kitchen. For me, it was relatively uncomfortable. I don’t like that part of the business. I love being with my customers, the people, my employees, but to have to showcase it. It was difficult. They asked questions that surprised me. I’m from Maine so I had to hold back my spontaneous responses. Tristan Maher, the head chef, was more at home under the bright lights, West said, and See SHOW page 31...

Explore Vernal Pools for Earth Day

WELLS Join local land trusts and conservation groups to celebrate the wonders of vernal pools during the upcoming week of Earth Day. Partners in the Mt. Agamenticus to the Sea Conservation Initiative will

offer several opportunities to muck around and explore these fascinating ephemeral environments that form throughout southern York County each spring. Vernal pools develop as snow melts and collects in shal-

low depressions on the forest floor. The pools may look like simple puddles to the untrained eye, but they actually contain delicate ecosystems that teem with life including wood frogs, spotted and blue-spotted salamanders, and fairy shrimp. Endangered species, including the Blanding’s turtle, also make their homes in vernal pools of southern York County. Two upcoming vernal pool explorations bring attention to MtA2C’s efforts to connect protected land in southern York Country centered on Mt. Agamenticus and stretching from the Tatnic Hills in Wells to the rocky coast in Kittery. Since 2002, the ten partner

organizations of MtA2C have conserved thousands of acres of land and have made great progress in their mission to form a landscape-wide mosaic of unfragmented protected lands. With a long-term goal of connecting 19,000 acres of open space by 2032, the region already boasts over 14,000 acres including more than 80 conservation projects completed by MtA2C partners. Protecting land in this region helps ensure that critical wildlife habitats like vernal pools can persist for the health of the environment and enjoyment of our communities, forever. On Saturday, April 21, from 9 to 11 a.m. join naturalist Sue Bickford of Wells Reserve for a hike for families with young

children. Meet at the entrance to the property on Tatnic Road in Wells. Free for GWRLT members, $5 donation ($10/family) suggested for non-members. Call 207-646-3604 or email info@ gwrlt.org to register. Also on April 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. follow experts from White Pine Programs and explore the vernal pools of York Land Trust’s Highland Farm Preserve. This is a family-friendly program designed for both adults and kids of all ages. Wear your muck boots. Licensing agent Cynthia Hall Domine recently landed a deal for a 2019 page-a-day calendar and is working on a greeting card line as well. The sign started as a lark, recalls Getchell, a humorist-writer-performance artist who does carpentry “to pay the bills.” “Winter 2015 was tough, and by February cabin fever was setting in,” he said during an interview in Domine’s Kennebunk office. “I was in this store in South Portland and saw the sign in the office section. Instead of writing something naughty on it, I realized that I could own it and make it my own analog Twitter account, a Poor Richard’s Almanac for the 21st century.” His girlfriend said it was the “stupidest thing” she’d ever heard of. But that didn’t deter Getchell. “I thought ‘I’ll do this as long as it amuses me, or until the sheriff arrives, or until I run out of things to say. None of those things have happened. In fact, people have taken ownership of it and often drop off quotes for me. There is no shortage of things to say,” said Getchell. His rules are simple. “I try to not get political. I stay away from religious issues. I don’t use overt profanity. I don’t sell things,” he said. Instead, Getchell gives passers-by a daily dose of humor that’s frequently sarcastic and rarely serious. “On occasion, Sign of the Apocalypse traffics in the earnest, but at its heart, it is rooted in a deep-seated desire to express the sarcastic and snort-worthy,” he writes in the book. “This, and a love of haiku, pizza, double en-

tendre and the worst puns ever crafted.” Calling himself a “sign anthologist,” Getchell loves the impact his messages make. “Almost invariably people start laughing when they read my daily messages. I’m doing something that makes them happy,” he said. That, he concludes, is why he’ll keep his sign lit and friends, fans and passers-by laughing for years to come. Getchell will share the sign’s story and the comical, quirky anecdotes connected to it at a lecture at York County Community College in Wells on Wednesday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m. The lecture is free, open to the public and sponsored by South Coast Senior College, an outreach program of YCCC. Copies of his book will be available at the free lecture at York County Community College, 112 College Drive, Wells on Wednesday, April 18. Kennebunk High School Environmental Awareness Club member Will Jones, who has been working to educate his community about the dangers to marine life from balloons and trash in the ocean, initiated the event because he thought some time spent with Ladder would make a lasting impression on people. “I was about six years old when I saw my first whale and it changed my life, Jones said. “I went from being a kid who let balloons go without a thought, to someone who spent the past 11 years of my life trying to tell people our balloons end up in the whale feeding grounds and cause harm to marine life. At a young age, Jones became passionate about the whales and their threats, and read every book in his school library about whales. He drew them, he studied them and made a homemade whale head that he still takes around to schools like Kennebunk Elementary School and other groups to talk about baleen, the filter-feeding system of most New England whales. Jones learned so much about whales, the Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conserva-

~ News ~ Town Celebrates National Volunteer Week WELLS The Town of Wells Volunteer Force is proud to have more than 450 active volunteers contributing their knowledge, skills, and expertise to the betterment of the town all year long, as well as seasonally. April is National Volunteer Month, and April 15-21 specifically is National Volunteer Week. It is a time when volunteer organizations and non-profits take time out of their busy schedule to thank all those who make a difference all over the nation, and especially here in Wells. Local volunteers come from all walks of life and cover the gamut from young teens to senior citizens. You can see them almost anywhere around town and, most likely, you may know one or two yourself. Young teens help out at Wells Parks & Recreation Department and Wells Library. They do all sorts of wonderful things through Wells High School, too, like mentoring young elementary students through the Lil Acorns program (Big Brothers, Big Sisters). You’ll see volunteers helping others all over town. Stop by the Wells Transportation Center where you’ll see smiling volunteers helping travelers with tickets or navigating their way to Boston or Freeport and every stop in between on the Amtrak Downeaster. They’re there for the incoming trains with that same friendly smile helping visitors connect with the trolley or a cab to get them to their destinations without worry. Residents work tirelessly to serve on many boards, committees, commissions, and programs; all with the goal of making Wells a great place to live, work, and play in the great state of Maine. Some have lived here all their lives; others like Mary and Dave Harrison are newcomers to Wells who bring their volunteer spirit and an unwavering desire to serve and help

make our town even better than it already is. The Harrisons come to Wells from Vermont. They’ve visited often and decided to make Wells their home just about six months ago. In that short time, Mary has become a member of the Wells Emergency Medical Services Board and Dave a member of the Harbor Advisory Committee. They bring with them a long history of volunteerism—more than 20 years worth in Fire Services in Vermont. Mary served as an EMT for 24 years on the Bristol Rescue Squad and 22 years with the Lincoln Volunteer Fire Company. Her volunteer resume is not only lengthy but most impressive. Dave retired after 35 years as the Fire Chief for the Lincoln Volunteer Fire Company and served as Lincoln’s Fire Warden for 25 years. He, too, brings with him a lengthy and impressive volunteer resume.

Legislation Introduced to Support Animals Rescued by Federal Government

NATIONWIDE Today, in recognition of National Dog Fighting Awareness Day on April 8, Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Kamala. D. Harris (D-CA) introduced the Help Extract Animals from Red Tape Act, bipartisan legislation that would expedite the disposition process for animals seized

in federal animal fighting cases, hold offenders financially responsible for the care of animals in custody, and allow courts to take into account the animals’ welfare when considering legal delays. “Animals who have been rescued from cruelty and abuse deserve to be placed in loving

Another Chance Animal Rescue NORTH BERWICK This past Sunday, April 8, ACAR hosted our 5th Annual Pet Expo at the North Berwick Elementary School in North Berwick. This event showcased a very large group of wonderful well-known animal rescues and shelters, plus a super group of animal product vendors as well as a large number of other product vendors showcasing a spectacular variety of unique wares. The public outpouring of support for this event was simply heartwarming and fabulous. We just can’t thank everyone enough for taking time out of their Sunday to patronize this yearly event that has become a local tradition for the community and make it the success it was Speaking on behalf of the animal groups, we all had a great opportunity to introduce some of our furry little clients to prospective new parents, to showcase our different missions, and most importantly just meet and greet the animal loving public. A big thank you to all of the rescue groups, non-profits and vendors, who participated. This includes Alpha Dog Rescue, AWS, Blixx Horses, Dog Temple—Dog Rehabilitation

To The Weekly Sentinel Newspaper, a special note of appreciation for allowing ACAR to feature information related to this event over the past month, and, of course, a very big thank you to North Berwick Police K9 Dog Maverick and Officer Pelkey for coming and demonstrating the duties and skills involved with being a 4-pawed officer on the force. We are thrilled to report that Tyler, our featured Kitty of the Week in last week’s issue and Ambassador of the 5th Annual Pet Expo found his new, loving family at the event too, due to the exposure he received here that made his new parents want to come meet him! Happy life sweet Tyler, may you continue to be the sweet little character and charmer you are who loves his “faucet fountains and wonderful years ahead we know you will have. Stay tuned for our upcoming re-opening in a few weeks after our short hiatus as we care for the many kitties in our care who needed our full attention to get them healthy after the situation they came from. seized animals. I have long advocated for policies that improve the welfare of animals, and I urge my colleagues to support this legislation to help protect animals that have experienced inhumane treatment. “Rescuing animals from dogfighting operations is a priority for the ASPCA, but their necessary sheltering and care can last months or even years. Assisting law enforcement in this way can be very expensive for shelters and rescues, and the long federal process can take a toll on animal victims as well as cause local agencies to think twice before intervening in new cases, said Matt Bershadker, president and CEO of the ASPCA. “We commend Senators Harris and Collins for championing the HEART Act to streamline this process and help victims of cruelty transition more quickly from lives of suffering and uncertainty to safe and loving homes.

The HEART Act has been endorsed by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society, the National Sheriffs’ Association, and the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys. Specifically, the HEART Act accelerates the disposition process by reducing from 60 to 30 days the amount of time the government has to notify interested parties following the seizure of animals under the federal animal fighting or gambling statues; requires the court to consider the animals’ welfare and the cost to the government when seeking to extend the notice period; requires claimants to reimburse the costs of caring for animals seized in federal animals fighting cases when the government prevails in civil forfeiture proceedings; and gives judges the discretion to allow the consideration of the claimant’s culpability, financial condition, and other factors when requiring and determining the reimbursement.

Meet Alyssa Kaufold, a senior at the University of New England majoring in Animal Behavior. Alyssa has been volunteering at AWS for more than a year and has made a huge impact on our animals with her talents. She eagerly takes part in several dog obedience classes every week, she takes amazing pictures of cats and other animals for use on our website, works in the veterinary clinic, helps in the development department, and has even helped at off-site events. In a matter of weeks, she will be graduating from the University of New England. The next chapter in her life will take her to Key West to work with dolphins. We are really sad to see her go, but couldn’t be happier that she’s getting to live her dream. We wish Alyssa the best of luck and thank her for being a part of the AWS Volunteer Team! ~ News ~ ...VOLUNTEERS from page 11 around the harbor late in April or early May, if Mother Nature cooperates Denise Mahoney is also new to the Wells Volunteer Force. She has been back in Wells about three years now having purchased her first home here 20 years ago. Her background includes being a medical assistant but her passion for more than 25 years is Reiki, a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. Mahoney has been helping new WEMS Director Jim Lapolla too at the station, as well as volunteering around town whenever she can. She helped serve lunch to local

seniors at the Wells-Ogunquit Senior Center and will be there on April 21 for the 2nd Annual Beach Cleanup. Mahoney is a hands-on, action-oriented volunteer who can be counted on to jump in and help whenever she can. Volunteers give of themselves, and it’s not always about the number of hours they can contribute—it’s about the contributions they make in those hours. This week, Wells honors and thanks all of the volunteers who give of their time, whether it’s an hour or a day, seasonally or annually, to help the town in so many ways large and small. If you’ve got the time, we have a place for you too!

The Town of Wells Volunteer Force thank Mary and Dave Harrison, among others, for their volunteerism.

Transportation Initiative to Bring Workers to Town OGUNQUIT The town is developing a plan to help alleviate seasonal and year-round staffing needs. The hope is to offer consistent, reliable transportation to people who live in the greater Ogunquit area and who would otherwise come to work here but for lack of transportation. “They may not have transportation, may not even think about coming to Ogunquit to work, said Sarah Potter, president of the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce, of the proposal. “But with this transportation initiative, they can think about it. The Ogunquit Transportation Initiative began with a handful of Ogunquit business-owners who have been meeting for well over a year now. The workgroup has reached the point of proposing a beta trial program for this 2018 season. The initial program focus will be for hospitality businesses or for those members that have schedules that this program meets—with the goal to help fill job openings with a similar time schedule requirement. We hope to build out the program as interest grows. In brief, a transportation route has been proposed, beginning at the York County Shelter in Alfred, making three stops north-to-south in Springvale/ Sanford and arriving in Ogun-

quit with three drop-off stops (north to south) at private business locations. This proposed route will transport employees to Ogunquit for a standard day work shift and will then pick up and deliver the employees home with the same stops, ending in Alfred.

“We are working with the York County Shelter, the Career Center in Sanford and YCCAC to help recruit and build a prospect employee pipeline, running from Alfred to Ogunquit, Potter said in a press release See TRANSPORT page 17...

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Authors Showcased on Ogunquit’s Patriots’ Day OGUNQUIT Celebrate Patriots’ Day weekend with five local authors who will be reading from their works. “We are very proud to

have the opportunity to highlight the writing talents and accomplishments of our local authors, says Sarah Potter, president of the Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce. “Our Patriots’

Artist’s Lost Landscapes on Exhibit SACO University of New England Professor of Art Charles Thompson will display his “Lost Landscapes,” featuring his plein air paintings. One morning several years ago, while visiting Dyer Library, Thompson came upon a book filled with black and white photographs of the area from the turn-of-the century. He became fascinated with the changes that had occurred in the community’s landscape in the intervening years, and

realized that many of the photographs were taken at locations he had visited and painted over the years. Thompson found the footprint of development on the open land and shoreline to be startling and disturbing. This discovery planted the seed for this visual project documenting the landscape as it once was and what it has now become. There will be a free opening reception for Lost Landscapes on Friday, April 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Day weekend serves up many kinds of activities and entertainment for all ages and with this platform, we’re pleased to celebrate and recognize our local authors.” Book topics and themes vary widely, and include a compilation of loving tributes about Ogunquit, a revealing journey through our criminal justice system, the delights of organic gardening, a child’s memoir

Meditate to Help Create Hunger Awareness ELIOT A local fitness group is hosting the first-ever Meditation Relay on Sunday, April 29. The purpose of the relay is to raise awareness about childhood hunger in the community and to raise funds to support End 68 Hours of Hunger. The event will take place at Yoga in ME in Eliot. The Meditation Relay is modeled on charitable walka-thons or bike-a-thons, but in this case fund-raisers will be participating in guided meditations for as many hours as they’d like during the event. “Our Meditation Relay is intended to be a fun and inclusive way to invite the community at large to join in our efforts to be of service,” said Nancy Garnhart, co-owner of Yoga in ME. “This event is designed to be accessible ...TRANSPORT from page 13 from the chamber. “There will be a monetary investment required to participate in this program but there may also be tax credits available to help defray the cost. Senator Warns of Senior Scams STATEWIDE In 2015, Stephen and Rita Shiman of Saco received a phone call that no grandparent would ever want to experience. The caller claimed to be their grandson, who said he had been arrested after being involved in a car accident in Georgia. The caller told the Shimans not to tell anyone and directed them to immediately contact his public defender, who demanded $1,250 for their grandson’s bail. Wanting to help their grandson, the Shimans sent a money order. But it turns out, their grandson was never in trouble—he was never even in Georgia. Instead, con artists had impersonated their grandson and preyed on the Shimans’ devotion to their family in order to rob them of their money. Recently, I invited the Shimans to testify before the Senate Aging Committee, which I chair, to share their awful experience. That hearing was the 12th in the past three years that the Committee has held examining scams affecting older Americans. I appreciate the Shimans’ willingness to share

their story to help alert other seniors so they can avoid becoming victims of these criminals. Scams perpetrated against seniors take many forms, but the type of scam that targeted the Shimans is especially cruel because it takes advantage of love. “There is a special bond between grandparents and their grandchildren, Mr. Shiman told the Committee. “The scammers knew this well and took full advantage of it with my wife and myself. They knew that when a grandchild is in trouble, grandparents go all out to help. When it comes to these emotional responses, reason goes out the window. According to the Government Accountability Office, financial fraud targeting older Americans is a growing epidemic that costs seniors an estimated $2.9 billion annually. Seniors often do not report fraud because they do not know where to report it, are too ashamed to admit they have been scammed, or may not even know that they are victims. At the hearing, the Aging Committee released its 2018 Fraud Book detailing the Top 10 scams reported to the Committee’s Fraud Hotline last year.

The Fraud Hotline is staffed by experienced investigators, and the toll-free number is 1-855-303-9470. Once again, the most prevalent complaint was the IRS impersonation scam. Through this scheme, fraudsters call victims over the phone, pretending to be an IRS agent, and demand immediate payment for allegedly unpaid taxes. The callers frequently threaten victims with arrest, foreclosure, or other adverse legal action. Seniors should be especially vigilant about this fraud as the tax filing deadline approaches.

Other examples of the scams identified in the annual fraud report include lottery phone scams, where fraudsters convince seniors that a large fee or taxes must be paid before one can receive lottery winnings; romance scams, where victims are told that their online romantic interest needs funds for a U.S. visit or some other purpose; and guardianship schemes, where deceitful relatives or guardians siphon seniors’ financial resources into their own bank accounts. More information about these and other scams can be found in the 2018 Fraud Book on the Committee’s website (www. aging.senate.gov/download/ fraud-report-2018), or you can call the Fraud Hotline to request that a copy be mailed to you. In addition to raising public

Low Income Home Energy Program Gets Fuelled STATEWIDE U.S. Senator Susan Collins helped to secure $3.6 billion— an increase of $250 million—for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and $248 million—a $23 million increase—for the Weatherization Assistance Program in the fiscal year 2018 funding bill that was recently signed into law. “Access to affordable home energy during the cold winter months is a matter of health and safety for many lowincome families and seniors in Maine and across the country, said Senator Collins. “I have long led bipartisan efforts to support federal funding for both LIHEAP, which provides critical heating assistance to low-income households, and the Weatherization Assistance Program, which lowers energy consumption and costs for the longterm. These programs remain

important lifelines that help prevent vulnerable Mainers from having to choose between heating their home, paying their bills, or going without food or medicine.

See SCAMS page 19...

Senator Collins has long led bipartisan efforts to support federal funding for LIHEAP and weatherization programs. Most recently, following a bipartisan letter coauthored by Senator Collins in November 2017 urging the Department of Health and Human Services to release funds for LIHEAP as quickly as possible, HHS released nearly $35 million for Maine LIHEAP programs.

Tax Burden: Maine Ranks 4th in Nation MAINE On April 17, Uncle Sam will once again take his cut of the past year’s earnings, and many taxpayers are already wondering how that will affect their finances. However, since the tax code is so complicated and has rules based on individual household characteristics, it’s hard for the average person to tell. And with a new tax code recently signed

awareness, the Aging Committee has urged federal agencies to crack down on con artists attempting to rob seniors of their hard-earned savings. Following the Committee’s steadfast advocacy to protect seniors from fraud, the Department of Justice announced in February that it charged more than 250 people with allegedly stealing more than a half billion dollars from more than a million Americans through a variety of schemes. This law enforcement action, the largest-ever coordinated sweep of senior fraud cases, marks an important step forward in our efforts to protect older Americans. into law, next year’s taxes will be quite different. One simple ratio known as the “tax burden helps cut through the confusion. Unlike tax rates, which vary widely based on an individual’s circumstances, tax burden measures the proportion of total personal income that residents pay toward state and local taxes. And it isn’t uniform across the U.S., either. To determine the residents with the biggest tax burdens, WalletHub compared the 50 states across the three tax types of state tax burdens—property taxes, individual income taxes and sales and excise taxes—as a share of total personal income in the state. Maine ranked 4th in the nation, in terms of highest property tax as a percentage of personal income. New Hampshire was #1, followed by Vermont, and New Jersey. After registering in the lobby, guests traveled down a hallway resembling a lush forest with hanging vines leading to the gymnasium that, for the night, resembled an enormous magical ball room. “This event is a tradition and a way to celebrate time with family or loved ones, said WES principal April Noble, who added that a similar dance event is held in the fall for moms (or other female relatives) and sons. “Each year the theme changes for the girls. According to PTSA member Alison Pucciarelli, several parents helped with this two month project which culminated with a rush to decorate after school in the final days. She said a theme had to be formulated, research done and props built leading up to this special night. “We would really like to thank our generous community of people, families and businesses who volunteered their time, donated food, supplies, and raffle items, said Loran Townsend. “We couldn’t do it without their support. The Girls Gala Committee was comprised of Alison Pucciarelli, Kim Bohn, Loran Townsend and Jennie Lawson. Another PTSA member, Marcia Ciorra, noted the hard work a handful of volunteers did in the last two days assembling the decorations and then, following the dance, working several more hours removing the decorations and props. “That’s an amazing amount of work for so few people to do, said Ciorra. “Alison Pucciarelli, her husband Gary, and Kim Bohn did an unbelievable job, giving our girls as close to a magical experience they could get. But it was worth all the effort. “I know many girts felt very special getting all dressed up and seeing the school gym transformed into a magical enchanted forest, said Noble. “This is truly one of the family fun events that

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ book by first exporting it from Thunderbird, then importing into OE Classic. They have directions listed at www.oeclassic.com/online-help-import. As for your email folders, OE Classic uses the .eml mail format so you would need to export your messages from Thunderbird to the .eml format, then you could import them into OE Classic. Here is a guide: www.mailsdaddy.com/blogs/how -to-export-thunderbird-emails-to -eml/. If you live in the area, this is something that I could do for you, it might take an hour or so, depending on how many email folders you have. I can’t give you step by step directions because I don’t

Dear Computer Lady, A friend purchased as a gift for me OE Classic and I like it but I cant seem to get both my address book and folders from Tbird to transfer to OE Classic. If you think you could help it would be so appreciated. I have Windows 10 and have tried so many things but NOTHING has been successful. Thank you for your time and help if can or can’t. Venna Dear Venna, I had not heard of OE Classic until I read your message and did a little bit of research. OE Classic does have an import function, but I don’t see Thunderbird listed as a program you can import from. It does look like you can probably transfer your address

use or own OE Classic. Elizabeth

Dear Dennis, This is probably a hardware issue. A hard one to isolate though. It could be the power supply, or the RAM or the motherboard. What to do depends on the age of the computer, and how much money you want to put into finding an answer. Do you have your computer plugged into a good UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)? Sometimes the power can fluctuate just enough to cause your computer to restart, but not enough that you might notice the lights flicker or need to reset the clock on your microwave. A UPS would switch to battery quickly enough to fix the problem. If you are confident that it is not a power issue, bring it into your local computer repair

Dear Computer Lady, My computer reboots itself without warning 2-3 times a week. I’m not doing any one thing when this happens. It’s happened when I clicked a link in my browser, when I was simply reading something online, and when I was making a graphic. Other times too, I’m sure, but those are the instances I recall. One time recently it rebooted itself just a minute or two after I started it up. I don’t think it’s a maintenance update as I get warnings when it does those. I’ve searched and searched for a fix, but to no avail. It seems to be a Windows 10 problem that affects many, but no one (that I could find) has a solution. Thank you for your wonderful newsletter. I’ve been a fan for many years!

Hopefully, you will find an inexpensive fix for your computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady: I have an Apple 5C. How do I get the Photos from my phone to my PC? Thanks for all the help you give us. Mike Dear Mike, The easiest way to get your photos from your phone to your PC or any other device with internet access is to use iCloud. On your phone, go to the settings, then icloud, and make sure photos is turned on. There is a setting under photos named, iCloud Photo Library. SPORTS Lacrosse Player Finds Deeper Meaning in Sport By Timothy Gillis YORK Sam Desmarais joined his Endicott College lacrosse teammates this week in a game that meant much more than the final score. Tufts edged out Endicott 12-11—a bunch of goals but not the main goal of the game. The team joined forces with the Tufts University men program to host a game at Hempstead Stadium in Beverly, MA. The goal of the event was to raise funds and awareness for Team IMPACT, which is a national nonprofit organization that connects children facing serious and chronic illnesses with local college athletic teams, forming life-long bonds and life-changing outcomes. Prior to the game, Endicott and Tufts honored their respective Team IMPACT teammates, Kenny Wallace of Endicott and Jacob Beranger of Tufts during the introduction of each team’s starting lineups. Wallace and Beranger also served as honorary captains for their respective programs, and took part in the coin toss at midfield. Wallace had a turbulent

start to life, sustaining a stroke at birth which left him with physical limitations on the left side of his body and some learning disabilities. He later developed a seizure disorder at the age of five. Recently, thirteen-year-old Wallace saw his family grow in size significantly as the seventh grader from Ipswich became the newest member of the Endicott men’s lacrosse program, signing his official letter of intent prior to being introduced to the Endicott community at the men’s basketball game on Wednesday. Desmarais, a freshman from York, tore his ACL earlier in the season, so he has been

sidelined, but that has lent him a greater perspective on the impact this program has, on both the team and the new recruits. “The guys have shown Sam what it’s like to have Kenny in our program, said Shawn Medeiros, the school’s sports information director. “Kenny’s always at practices and games. He’s a family member. And Sam has learned the importance of Kenny being in our program. It’s a huge thing for Kenny to have that support system. Endicott College men’s lacrosse is coached by Eric Hagerty, an alumni in his third year leading the team.

People and Business Profiles

Companies Collaborate on Barrel-Aged Coffee YORK Wiggly Bridge Distillery, a local family-owned and -operated business, and Anthony’s Small Batch Roasters, also a local family-owned business, have joined forces to combine coffee beans and bourbon barrels. In a neighborhood collaboration to mix individual passions for small batch bourbon and coffee, these business owners believe they are on to a palatable creation. “At Wiggly Bridge Distillery, we enjoy working with local businesses and this idea was exciting,” says Amanda Woods, director of Marketing for Wiggly Bridge Distillery. “A long time ago, coffee was actually traded and shipped across oceans using barrels, so this really isn’t something new. What is unique is that we are aging the green (unroasted) beans in a used, bourbon barrel. Green beans are very porous and pick up the aroma and flavors in the barrel, it’s really awesome.” They put Anthony’s green Peruvian Organic beans in

a used 30-gallon white oak bourbon barrel. The green beans were aged in the barrel over time with the barrel being turned every now and then. “We originally tried a small batch of coffee in a smaller barrel, we weren’t quite sure if the end product would be any good and didn’t want to go all-in on an unknown result,” says Dave Woods, founder of Wiggly Bridge. “We emptied the smaller barrel and handed it off to Anthony’s Small Batch Roasters to do their thing. The result was a unique coffee with distinct flavor notes.” The barrel is stored in the root cellar of the old barn where the distillery makes and ages their spirits and picks up the Angels’ Share of the barrel room. (The Angels’ Share is the amount of alcohol that is lost to evaporation when the liquid is being aged in oak barrels, usually around 2 percent but can be much higher in hotter countries, like the United States.) The beans are then roasted to a light espresso roast. The coffee is not going to taste like bour-

bon, but rather the beans will have picked up some of the flavor that the barrel(s) give off creating a unique coffee and adding richness and complexity to the bean. “Our family traditions run deep. Our fathers knew and respected each other. Our fathers would be very proud knowing we have joined forces to work together and give the local community something unique” says Mark Graziano, owner Anthony’s Small Batch Roasters. The Hand Crafted Barrel Aged Coffee is now available in limited quantities at either location.
