Father and Son Duo Release Two Odes to York Beach YORK Over the past 4.5 years, local author Jody Clark has published six novels. His stories all take place in Maine and mostly range from comedies to heartfelt dramedies; culminating with last summer’s dark, yet uplifting novel – Medillia’s Lament. It was his most highly-reviewed book yet, and it was referred to as, “Maine magical realism at its best.” Since then, Clark has decided to take a break from his mostly adult-themed novels and has partnered up with his teenage son, Owen Clark. Together, they are dipping their toes into the children’s book genre. Their first collaboration was “York Beach – Through the Eyes of a Child”, which was co-written by both father and son. The story tells of a family’s first ever trip to York Beach. While the first half of the book is filled with photos of classic York Beach spots, the second half is completely illustrated by fifteen-year-old Owen Clark. The book is written from the perspective of a child but is more of a reminder to adults that “No matter how advanced technology gets, memories are better when they are experi-

I would sit and write, and he would draw. By the time he was five, it was pretty obvious he had talent as an artist. And no, I’m not just saying that as a typical biased parent. He had a real gift.” Although the book was officially released last year, Clark thinks this summer will have a bigger impact on sales. “Like most of the beach businesses, a majority of my book sales take place between

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and some issues with my printing company, our York Beach book didn’t get released until the end of the summer last year. I’m expecting this summer to be much better for exposure and sales.” Besides York Beach – Through the Eyes of a Child, the father and son duo will be releasing their second collaboration sometime this month entitled, “The Nubble Lighthouse is special to me because…” Clark points out, “I do a See BOOKS page 4...
OGUNQUIT A mainstay of Ogunquit’s bustling hospitality industry is about to change ownership when two of Caffé Prego’s original kitchen staff will take the reins later this month. Donovan Fraser and Zach Crosby, two well-trained and experienced executive chefs who brought their culinary skills to Ogunquit’s Five-O restaurant under former owners Donato Tramuto and Jeff Porter, and later helped open their second restaurant, Caffé Prego, are about to become owners of that popular Shore Road restaurant known for its authentic Italian cuisine and homemade gelato. According to Tramuto and Porter, this transition in ownership aligns perfectly with their “management mantra” to encourage and train staff toward future management

They have both earned this opportunity.” Tramuto and Porter have complete confidence that customers will see no interruption in the service or quality of the food at Caffé Prego, since both Fraser and Crosby have been front and center of the restaurant’s operation since its opening in 2006. “They See PREGO page 20...

And for nearly five decades, Hackmatack has even hosted thespians, turning the 300-yearold farm into a theater each summer. Wells Rotary Announces Annual Vidalia Onion Program WELLS The Wells Rotary Club is excited to announce their 6th Annual Vidalia Onion Sale Project. During the month of April, Wells Rotarians will be taking orders for sweet, delicious Georgia-raised Vidalia Onions. This program has been extremely popular for the last several years with the Augusta, Maine Rotary Club and the Augusta club has graciously included the Wells club into the distribution. The onions come in 25which began in the 1600s as a Guptill family homesteading site. “They are very hardy and wild and similar to the bison in that they need little care and maintenance,” said Connor Guptill, farm proprietor who a decade ago brought bison onto the Berwick farm on Route 9. The Mangalitsa pigs, which historically were bred more for lard than as meat pigs, were popular in the Austro-Hungarian empire, but were nearly forced into extinction after the empire died and as other cheaper oils replaced lard. By 1991, only 200 of these fatty pigs were left, all of them in Hungary. A Hungarian geneticist decided to breed them again and soon brought them to the United States where they took hold in Washington and then

~ News ~ ...PIGS from page 2 Michigan. Bakers Green Acres of Michigan first brought the pigs to Maine, where the harsh weather and forest lands were well suited to the pigs. Today, more than 50,000 of these fatty pigs are estimated to exist and Maine is a center of their reemergence in the US. On a recent day, Connor and his seven-year-old son Lewis made their way back through the fields to the forested area that is now home for their eight new Mangalitsas. The furry-looking pigs were happily foraging through the leaves and roots, preparing another parcel of land that may one day be farmed. “They’re the happiest when they’re foraging and digging,” Guptill said, while his son foraged around with them. The fleece on these pigs keeps them warm, but they need at least half an acre each of land, he estimated. Guptill, who manages a portfolio of software products for veterinarians as his day job, was looking for a new heirloom animal. He bought his five females and three males pigs from a local farmer who was looking to get rid of them. He is planning to breed them and sell the piglets. These pigs are good for homesteads or home farms because they are friendly and require
little care, according to Guptill. Because the pigs have more fat — fat makes up about 65% of their body weight — the meat looks and tastes completely different from normal pork and “is incredibly delicious,” Guptil said. These pigs, which aren’t as big as traditional pork pigs, get no hormones or antibiotics or vaccinations, another attractive feature. Despite being lard pigs, they have always been prized for their pork, and today the meat from a Mangalitsa has become a delicacy. They take longer to reach maturity and have less meat per animal. In addition, Mangalitsas give birth to only f5-8 piglets instead of the 12-14 of other breeds. As a result, the pork can run $10-$15 a pound in the US, and in Europe has been known to sell for as much as $70 a pound. Visitors are invited to Hackmatack Farm during farm store hours, which is Wednesday evenings and Saturdays. Guptill is hoping individuals and families will stop by and visit with the pigs, and check out the bison. The farm store opened last year, selling products they all “hyperlocal,” including Hackmatack bison and pork, chicken, lamb, eggs. cheese and yogurt. “Make a family day of it,” suggested Guptill, father to two young children. “They do really well with kids and they are very clean. Plus they look very cool.”

PNSY Selects Military Youth of the Year
KITTERY On April 8, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard selected Faith Ettlich as their Military Youth of the Year. Established in 1947, Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program. The Military Youth of the Year component was introduced in 2013 to recognize outstanding teens served by BGCA-affiliated Youth Centers on U.S. military installations worldwide. Along with Ettlich, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was fortunate to have two additional outstanding candidates, Allison Maurice and Madelyn Peltier, who made the Military Youth
of the Year competition exceptionally challenging. “After meeting these three young women, I am confident in our future and theirs,” said panel judge Kathleen Murphy, Concord School Superintendent. The panel of judges, which included multiple school superintendents and an educational outreach expert, had strict criteria to follow with the objective to select the person who best embodies the qualities of leadership and service, academic excellence and living a healthy lifestyle. Being knowledgeable about current events and issues affecting today’s youth, as well as being articulate, and having a record of strong character and
achievements are critical elements of a Military Youth of the Year candidate. “Our decision was not easy to make, each candidate brought different strengths to the table,”
lot of writing in my car up at the Nubble, and I’m constantly people-watching. It never ceases to amaze me just how special the lighthouse is to so many people. Whether young or old, they all have their own reasons for considering it their happy place. Sometime last winter, I came up with the idea to make a book that was filled with a collection of notes from people telling why

the Nubble was special to them. While I still think it’s a cool idea, it didn’t really allow for my son to fully utilize his creativeness. That’s when we decided to do it strictly with kids and have them include a drawing of the Nubble as well.” Clark put the word out on social media that they were looking for kids from ages five to eighteen to submit a drawing and to write why the Nubble was special to them. “We were looking for about twenty submissions but ended up with nearly twice that amount,” Clark said. “At that point, we decided to rearrange the format of the book so that we could include everyone’s work. The last thing I wanted was to tell a five-year-old that their hard work didn’t make the cut. Besides, I think everyone should get to experience seeing their work in print at some point in their life. I mean, I still get excited when I see and hold one of my books for the first time. I love
seeing that sense of pride and accomplishment on my son’s face, and I hope all the kids feel the same way.” Not only did Owen Clark provide a drawing for the book, but his illustration has already taken on a life of its own, so to speak. “My son has always been his own harshest critic, but when he finished his pencil drawing of the Nubble, even he was impressed with how it turned out. I ended up taking his drawing and turning it into an 11” x 14” puzzle as a gift for him. I also did the proud father thing and posted a picture of the puzzle on my Facebook page. The next thing we knew, we had quite a few requests for people to purchase his Nubble puzzle. I think we all know it’s hard to make a teenager smile, but hearing and seeing people’s reaction to his work certainly did the trick.”

~ News ~ Scams Threatening Legal Action NATIONWIDE More and more residents have been receiving voicemails left by local numbers which threaten the receiver with legal action – Quite an alarming message to receive! An article entitled “Exposing Voicemail Call-Back Scams” by Patrick Webre, Chief, Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), helps shed light on what residents can do. To read his full article, visit www.fcc.gov/newsevents/blog/2019/08/28/exposing-voicemail-call-back-scams where you can hear recorded examples of the scam. The calls often sounded urgent, pressuring residents to take action to avoid legal and financial consequences, although some call-back messages may also sound friendly or routine. A scammer’s first goal is to engage you, then to work on stealing your money or personal information. Don’t give in to fear or curiosity! The FCC advises consumers not to answer calls or respond to texts from unknown numbers. Be on guard for spoofing scams where caller ID information is falsified. Scammers may spoof a local area code and number, a company you know and trust, or even a government
agency, to trick you into picking up. If you answer a call and suspect it was spoofed, hang up immediately. Do not respond to any questions or requests. Never reveal personal or financial information. If you feel pressured or suspicious, hang up and call back using a company number you can verify on one of your bills, an account statement, or an official website. As part of the FCC’s multipronged approach to stopping unwanted and illegal robocalls, some recent actions include: Allowing phone companies to block by default illegal or unwanted calls based on reasonable call analytics before the calls reach you; Allowing phone companies to provide consumers with tools to block calls from any number that doesn’t appear on a customer’s contact list or other “white list”; Banning malicious caller ID spoofing of text messages and calls originating overseas; Urging phone companies to implement caller ID authentication to help reduce illegal spoofing. To help avoid robocall scams, the FCC encourages residents to take advantage of the latest protections available and ask your phone company about robocall-blocking tools and apps. Several phone com-

Maine Medical Center wants your feedback for a new research study. The PROTECT Study: Do early antibiotics after cardiac arrest stop pneumonia and help improve survival? The PROTECT Study is a research study being done at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine for people brought to an emergency department after cardiac arrest. This research study will teach us if giving antibiotics after cardiac arrest stops pneumonia, a lung infection, and helps people survive and recover. It will also tell us how antibiotics affect the normal bacteria in our bodies. We do not know the best way to stop pneumonia after cardiac arrest; there are risks and benefits to each approach. This study will answer the question: Do early antibiotics after cardiac arrest stop pneumonia and help people recover?

~ News ~ AAA Believes Tech Must Improve Before Trustng Self-Driving Cars NATIONWIDE AAA’s annual automated vehicle survey finds that only 22% of people feel manufacturers should focus on developing self-driving vehicles. The majority of drivers (80%) say they want current vehicle safety systems, like automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assistance, to work better and more than half — 58% — said they want these systems in their next vehicle. These findings signal that people are open to more sophisticated vehicle technology, which if they provide positive experiences for drivers, will open the road to self-driving vehicle acceptance. “People are ready to embrace new vehicle technology, especially if it will make driving safer,” said Pat Moody, manager of public affairs for AAA Northern New England. “Consumers are clear about what they want and if automakers seize the opportunity to provide a better experience now, it will pave the way for the vehicles of tomorrow.” Nearly 96% of 2020 vehicle models came equipped with at least one advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) such as automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning or lane keeping assistance. Consumers who buy new will likely have at least one type of vehicle safety system and in many cases, this could be their first interaction with more advanced vehicle
technology. Previous AAA research has found that some systems, particularly those that provide the highest level of automation available to the public, do not always work as expected. These negative experiences could influence driver opinion of future vehicle automation. It also reinforces the need for manufacturers to continue to hone vehicle technology by expanding testing and focusing on including more real-world scenarios encountered by drivers. For 6 years, AAA’s annual automated vehicle survey has gauged consumer sentiment regarding emerging vehicle technology, focusing on self-driving vehicles. While American’s interest in owning a car with more advanced technology grows, they are still struggling to warm up to the idea of full vehicle automation. AAA’s survey found that 14% of drivers would trust riding in a vehicle that drives itself, similar to last year’s results. However, 86% either said they would be afraid to ride in a self-driving vehicle (54%) or are unsure about it (32%). The survey was conducted January 15-17 using a probability-based panel designed to be representative of the U.S. household population overall. The panel provides sample coverage of approximately 97% of the U.S. household population. Most surveys were completed online; consumers without Internet access were surveyed over the phone. A total of 1,010 interviews were completed among U.S. adults, 18 years of age or older. The margin of error for the study overall is 4% at the 95% confidence level. Smaller subgroups have larger error margins. As North America’s largest
motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides more than 61 million members with travel, insurance, financial, and automotive-related services. Operating 18 offices throughout Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, AAA Northern New England is a not-for-profit, fully tax-paying corporation and serves as an advocate for the safety and security of all travelers. Drivers can request roadside assistance, identify nearby
gas prices, locate discounts, book a hotel or map a route via

OGUNQUIT Live theatre returns to Maine’s Southern Seacoast this Summer with side-splitting laughter; tap dancing heroes and monsters; pizza, spam, and cheeseburgers in paradise; and everyone’s favorite pop hits from the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. It’s the biggest backyard bash in the playhouse’s 89-year history and the public is invited! “When it became obvious we couldn’t produce shows indoors this year, the creative wheels began turning on how we could deliver that legendary Ogunquit Playhouse magic in an entirely new way,” says Bradford T. Kenney, Executive Artistic Director. Rising from the grounds of the South lawn
on our campus this April is The Playhouse Pavilion, a 25,000 square foot, fully covered, open air venue designed to give audiences the greatest theatrical experience in the safest of environments. Fully wired for lights and sound, the 75-foot wide stage will dazzle socially distanced audiences seated in pods of two seats with clear sight lines for all the show stopping glitz and side-splitting laughter we’ve been without for the past year. The 2021 Season begins with “Spamalot” in a new 90minute, no-intermission extravaganza. From the comedic brilliance of the mighty Pythons and their hysterically inaccurate retelling of King Arthur’s quest for the Holy Grail, Eric Idle adapts

his original Broadway script to streamline the music and laughter for a COVID-friendly environment. Brought to life on the new expansive Pavilion stage by inspiringly inventive director BT McNicholl, performances will take place for four weeks from June 16 through July 10. Summer shifts into cruise control with the Regional premiere of “Escape To Margaritaville”. Co-created by TV’s Greg Garcia (My Name is Earl) and Mike O’Malley (Yes, Dear), it’ll be cheeseburgers in paradise with this 90-minute, no intermission journey through the music of the incomparable Jimmy Buffett. Parrotheads can kick off their flip flops for seven weeks from July 14 through August 28. The Pavilion stage transforms into a quaint New England seacoast village for the World Premiere of “Mystic Pizza”, the beloved 1980s MGM romantic comedy that launched the career of Julia Roberts. It’s the story of three girlfriends navigating life, love, and coming-of-age in a working class seaside pizza joint cooking up a hot and fresh musical from September 1 through October 2, topped with the hits of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Bringing the curtain down on the Pavilion stage spectacular, a new 90-minute, no intermission, side-splitting version of “Young Frankenstein”. Devilish director Jeff Whiting (Bullets Over Broadway) and spine chilling scenic designer Nate Bertone are puttin’ on the Playhouse glitz as Transylvania mania overtakes Ogunquit from October 6
through Halloween! This “abbynormal” exhibition is the perfect way to roll our troubles away. It is important to note that seating in The Pavilion is limited so early ticket purchase is encouraged. Playhouse Members will receive a week of pre-sales beginning April 19 at 10 a.m. With an annual Membership of $100 or more, members can get a fast pass to the front of the line! General Public sales begin April 26 online at www.ogunquitplayhouse.org and by phone at 207646-5511. Ogunquit Playhouse encourages all patrons and guests to get vaccinated for their own safety and the safety of those around them. Staff, artists, and patrons must adhere to current State and Federal CDC guidelines for social distancing. Masks will be required at all times, except when eating and drinking. Masks will be provided to those who arrive without one. And patron traffic flow will be managed to ensure the safest, most efficient arrival and departure from the campus. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ “Decades of Change in Maine’s Birds” Presentation YORK COUNTY If you’ve lived in Maine for a while, you’ve probably noticed that bird populations have changed and continue to do so. Just a few decades ago, birds such as the Northern Cardinal, the Tufted Titmouse, the Red-Bellied Woodpecker and the Carolina Wren were uncommon sightings here, if seen at all. Birds such as the Eastern Bluebird were much fewer in number. In 1949, Robert Palmer’s then definitive Maine Birds described the “Eastern” Cardinal as “a very rare visitant,” with most sightings being “escaped captives.” As for the Tufted Titmouse, he noted there was one specimen in the University of Maine collection from 1890, but no records since. Bird Atlases are an essential tool for cataloging birds, and have been created for every U.S. state. From 1978-1983, birders created Maine’s first Breeding Bird Atlas, but it is now significantly out of date. Intensive work to create an updated second one is underway. 2021 marks the fourth year (of five) for this second Maine Bird Atlas, a project by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to document the breeding and winter ranges of Maine’s birds. On Tuesday, April 20 at 7 p.m., York County Audubon is pleased to present a Zoom program entitled “Decades of Change in Maine’s Birds.” Presenter Doug Hitchcox is the Outreach Coordinator for the Maine Bird Atlas and Staff Naturalist
for Maine Audubon. He will share an update on the project, focusing on what the goals are for the last two years and especially how we can help. Data collected as part of this project will be invaluable in guiding future species status assessments, priority species’ needs, and identifying and conserving high value wildlife habitats. In order for it to be successful, community
scientists need help to fill in the gaps before this survey is over. York County Audubon will be presenting this program online. It’s available free of charge, but advance registration is required. To register, go to www.yorkcountyaudubon.org, and click on the link found there. After registering, a confirmation email will be sent containing information about joining the program.

Lecture About Scottish Prisoners in Maine
SOUTH BERWICK The Old Berwick Historical Society will present “Involuntary Americans: Scottish Prisoners in Early Colonial Maine” on Thursday, April 22 at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. Dr. Carol Gardner will detail the lives of some of Maine’s earliest settlers – prisoners of war who were sent to Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts, against their will in 1650-1651. As forced laborers and later as free men, these solders left their
marks on early New England society. Dr. Gardener’s recently published narrative history of the same title chronicles the life and times of Scottish foot soldier Thomas Doughty, who was captured at the Battle of Dunbar, shipped to Boston, sold to a Puritan industrialist in New Hampshire, and eventually established his own milling operation on the Saco River in Maine. In order to sync your email across your iPad, iPhone and Windows computer, you need to set it up to use IMAP servers instead of POP servers. Let me explain: The original email protocol, created in 1984 is POP, which stands for Post Office Protocol. POP downloads your email messages from a remote server and stores them on your computer or other device. IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. It was created in 1986. IMAP leaves your email messages on the remote server, and just stores a temporary copy of them on your device. Each time you connect to the server, it syncs your messages so anything you delete on your computer, is deleted on the server, anything you move from one folder to another on your computer is also moved on the server. Both of these protocols allow you to read your emails using an app or program installed on your devices. My guess is that you have your Comcast email set up to use POP instead of IMAP. Switching to IMAP will result in your email working the way you want it to. You might have to contact Comcast for directions on exactly how to do this, or switch to something like Gmail, which you can use with the Gmail app on your phone and tablet, and Gmail website on your comput-

PC (I have Windows 10) most of the transferred picture to the PC come upside-down or sideways. Most of the time the pictures on the iPhone are right-side up, as they should be. I have to adjust each picture on the PC that is upside down or sideways. Please help me to correct this problem. Thank you, Robert in CA Dear Robert, I take photos with my iPhone all the time, and while I do have the occasional upside-down or sideways photo, it doesn’t happen very often. So, I decided to do a little research and this is what I found. The orientation of your photos depends on how you hold the phone when you are taking the picture. If you are taking a picture in portrait mode, you want to have the home button on the bottom of your phone, not the top. When you are taking the picture in landscape mode, you want to rotate the phone to the left so that the volume buttons are on the bottom. I frequently take pictures of papers lying flat on the table (instead of photocopying them) and I have found that I need to hold the phone in the direction I want to orient the photo before I take the photo. Otherwise, I often end up with an upside-down or sideways photo. Hopefully this will help you with your photography. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Microsoft removed my original Skype and you now need to get it through Microsoft apps which doesn’t work. I finally found out how to remove it and downloaded the earlier version but it won’t load. Removed that and tried many sites to download from and they all keep telling me go to Microsoft apps… Microsoft seems to think they own our computers. Is there any way I can get Skype without Microsoft? Thanks for all your help, Elaine Dear Elaine, Actually, I believe that Microsoft owns Skype now. They purchased it in October of 2011. As for a solution to your problem, have you tried downloading Skype using the Ninite. com installer? Just go to www.ninite. com click the check box next to Skype and click the blue button that says, “Get Your Ninite”. Once the file has downloaded, you can run it to install Skype. I just tried it, and it works on my Windows 10 computer. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. All Veterans, Spouses and Caregivers Eligible for COVID-19 Vaccinations from VA STATEWIDE All veterans, their spouses and caregivers can get COVID19 vaccinations from VA under the Save Lives Act signed into law March 24. Covered individuals can receive a vaccine from VA due to the ongoing COVID-19 public health emergency, including Veterans who are not eligible to enroll in VA health care. Under the bill, covered individuals are: Veterans who are not eligible to enroll in the VA health care system; speci-
fied Veterans who are eligible for hospital care, medical services, and nursing home care abroad; family caregivers approved as providers of personal care services for Veterans under the VA’s Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers; caregivers of Veterans participating in the VA’s Program of General Caregiver Support Services; and caregivers of Veterans participating in the VA’s Medical Foster Home Program, Bowel and Bladder Program, Home Based Primary Care Program, or
‘Real Man’ Fights Breast Cancer KENNEBUNK Donning a hot pink Lone Ranger-style mask, a blazing pink bandana and a boldly pink tutu, a Kennebunk business owner and community volunteer is on a mission – a mission to help lead the fight for a world without breast cancer. Under the guise of “Real Man,” John Spain, owner of Maine Art Hill, is working hard to promote breast cancer awareness. “This fall while traveling across the country dressed in a pink leotard, cape and mask, I have had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with so many people facing this disease in one way or another,” said Spain, a resident of Kennebunk and a board member of the Kennebunkport Festival. “With this comes the dramatic realization of just how easy my part is compared to what they have been through, and more often, still going through.” This is Spain’s third consecutive year as a Real Men Wear Pink of Maine ambassador, collecting donations for the American Cancer Society. During that time, he has raised more than $23,000 through The Pink Show which engages artists from across Maine and other states. Each piece in The Pink Show incorporates the color pink, and every artist is asked to submit a statement about why fighting breast
cancer is important to them. Maine Art Hill in Kennebunk concluded the show in November 2020 (www.maine-art.com). Not only has cancer See PINK page 17...
Veteran Directed Care Program; Civilian Health and Medical Programs of the Department of Veterans Affairs recipients and Veteran spouses. VA must prioritize the vaccination of (1) Veterans enrolled in the VA health care system, (2) Veterans who fail to enroll but receive hospital care and medical services for specified disabilities in their first 12 months of separation from service, and (3) caregivers accompanying such prioritized Veterans. Additionally, vaccines furnished abroad are authorized to be furnished in a geographic location other than a state regardless of whether vaccines are needed for the treatment of Veterans with a service-connected disability. SANFORD Waban marked several milestones in March – hosting its 50th annual telethon, the debut of a virtual telethon, and raising over $110,000 for Waban’s Fraser Ford Child Development Center’s (FFCDC) essential programs and services. Jennifer Putnam, Waban’s Executive Director, and Gervaise Flynn, Waban’s Deputy Director, kicked off the telethon on the Waban website and on Facebook and YouTube Live. Along with other long-time hosts, Melissa Hall
and RJ Legere, the event had many of the hallmarks of the community event. Because last year’s annual event had to be cancelled as the pandemic emerged, this was Putnam’s first telethon. “It was great to see first-hand the community come together to help support Waban. After a year of pandemic turbulence, I found it gratifying to see the volunteers, entertainers, performers, and so many businesses and individuals come together virtually to make the telethon successful!” The entertainment got rolling

Throughout its half-acentury of existence, Waban’s Annual Telethon has raised a total of more than $2.8 million to benefit Waban and to help provide services to children with autism, intellectual, and developmental disabilities. For more than 50 years, Waban has been working on behalf of children and adults with autism, intellectual, and developmental disabilities, providing services and support for hundreds of individuals annually. Health & Fitness ...PINK from page 15 touched Spain’s world personally, but many of Maine Art Hill’s employees have faced the disease, either personally or alongside family members. In addition, the gallery represents several amazing artists who are breast cancer survivors. “As a breast cancer survivor, I am acutely aware of the challenges of this insidious disease,” said Julie Houck, who has a piece in The Pink Show. “My work, ‘Reflective Moment,’ reminds us that life is full of hope and renewal. “As a successful and very grateful cancer survivor, I now look at cancer as ‘our’ problem rather than my problem,” said artist Richard Winslow, who has two pieces in The Pink Show. Now in its fifth year as part of a nationwide program, the Real Men Wear Pink of Maine campaign enlists dozens of prominent men to take a stand against breast cancer. Candidates contribute their unique talents and reached deep into their networks to collect donations as well raise awareness for the fight against the disease. Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society save lives from breast cancer through early detection and prevention, innovative breast cancer research and patient support. “This year’s Real Men know there is no time to wait. We can’t and won’t allow progress to be put on hold because of COVID-19. At risk are more and
better treatments and discoveries that will improve and save lives,” said Reven Oliver, community development manager at the American Cancer Society who is coaching the Real Men Wear Pink volunteers. “We’re impressed by John’s creativity, and all of our Ambassadors.” In Maine, this year alone, 1,370 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 180 will die from the disease, according to the American Cancer Society Cancer Facts & Figures. Across the country an estimated 279,100 women and men were newly diagnosed with breast cancer and 42,690 died from the disease in 2020. Breast cancer death rates among women declined 40 percent from 1989 to 2016, largely due to improvements in early detection and treatment. Still, it remains the second most common cancer type diagnosed in women, after skin cancer,

FINANCE & CAREER Community Colleges Offer Free Summer Classes AUGUSTA Maine’s community colleges are offering free classes this summer to re-engage Maine’s high school students in their educational journey. Maine high school seniors graduating this spring and attending a community college this fall can take a free summer class under the new “Momentum from the Start” program. All tuition and fees are waived and students only pay for books or materials. More information about Momentum from the Start is available from the college admission offices (www. mccs.me.edu/admissions-tuition-aid/admissions/how-toapply/.) Maine students who are still in high school this summer can also take a free summer class under the state’s early college “Aspirations” program, which allows all high school students to take free college credits each academic year. Any student who has already earned the maximum number of free college credits for the year, or is not eligible for Aspirations, can
The Weekly Sentinel (877) 646-8448 www.TheWeeklySentinel.com
still take a class at half-price under a special Early College rate. Students interested in this program should contact their high school counselor or apply directly at our new OnCourse portal (https://oncourse.mccs. me.edu/.) Education experts across the country have noted a dip in high school student engagement during the pandemic, and these free classes make it easy for Maine students to re-engage with the educational opportunities around them. Courses are free, available online or in-person if there is a hands-on component, and with flexible start times to accommodate work and life schedules. “This has been a very tough year for high school stu-
dents, and we know many of them couldn’t take the classes they wanted – including Early College classes - for a number of reasons. This gives them a chance to catch up, re-engage on pursuing their interests and experience college-level instruction,” said Janet Sortor, vice president and chief academic officer of the Maine Community College System. Studies show that students who take Early College courses are more likely to go to college after high school, and earn more money as adults. We don’t want anyone to miss out on that opportunity. It’s a great deal.” “The Momentum from the Start program is also a great way to help incoming students get acclimated and get a free head
start on their studies,” Sortor said. “Some students lose their initiative to attend college over the summer – it’s known as “summer melt” – and we don’t want that to happen to a single person.” Maine’s seven communi-
ty colleges have the lowest tuition and fees in New England and offer nearly 300 career and transfer programs of study, customized training for business and industry, and continuing education.

It was 3 p.m. and the restaurant opened at 4 p.m. Nevertheless, we were offered a seat on the front porch and immediately served glasses of water. We thought that maybe someone spotted our veterans license plate and said, “Let’s be nice to the old man from the U.S. Army.” We had the best dinner we have ever had! Ordered one of everything, except drinks – Two. As we got ready to leave, our beautiful server Andrea pointed to the man near the bar and said, "It’s all set." The owner Rick pointed at me with a half salute and said, "Thank YOU!" I wished that a hundred veterans were with me at that moment to share it. For their part, Fraser and Crosby, longtime colleagues and best friends, say that with Tramuto and Porter’s encouragement and support, they are prepared to take this next step in their careers. “We both are so grateful to be able to continue Donato and Jeff’s legacy in this beautiful community,” said Fraser, who came to the United States from Jamaica in 2004 and officially became a US citizen in 2011. “Owning the restaurant I have worked at for the past 11 years is a dream come true.” Crosby, a year-round Wells resident, explained that to be co-owners of an established and successful restaurant alongside his best friend and longtime col-

For the executive chef who left the area for a few years to return as co-owner of Caffé Prego “is like coming home again, back to a beautiful, familiar place,” he said. He enjoyed being in the woods and hunting all his life. He cherished spending time with family and his great-grandchildren. They gave him much joy. At any family gathering, he was always “willing” to try every dessert. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him. FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

WELLS We have completely moved out of our former thrift shop at the IGA Plaza in Wells. The task was even more overwhelming than I expected. I knew we were packed tight, but I was amazed we needed to call the movers SIX times before we finished, not to mention the dozens of loads we hauled to other charities or to the dumpster.
Adopting a Rescue Dog? BBB Warns About Phony Fees NATIONWIDE During COVID-19, so many people adopted dogs that they emptied local shelters. If you are looking to rescue a furry friend, watch out for scams. Puppy scams are targeting people who want to adopt a dog from a shelter or rescue, by impersonating real animal shelters or posing as individuals wanting to rehome an animal. How does the scam works? You are looking to adopt a dog, and you find an animal shelter or individual online wanting to rehome a puppy. You message them for more information and receive a convincing, heart-tugging backstory. In one recent BBB Scam Tracker report, a
scammer claimed to be finding a new home for her poodle after a car accident left her unable to care for the dog. In other cases, scammers impersonate real animal shelters. In this version of the puppy scam, the scammer may not charge for the dog. Instead, they ask for a refundable deposit to “hold” the pup or request payment to ship the pet to your home. Most scammers ask you to pay through a digital wallet (Zelle was mentioned in several reports) or use a pre-paid debit card or gift card. Although this scam mostly involves dogs, it can also include cats and other pets. After you pay, the probSee FEES page 24...
That store will always be dear to us. We met so many of you there. It’s where we developed Scaredy Cat School, ‘where frightened kitties go to learn to be brave!” The shop, with its rough concrete floors, sagging ceiling tiles, stubborn pipes and old heating, was home to us who worked there, sometimes overnight. We got to know our plaza neighbors and their businesses and loved being their neighbor. Shabby it was, but we packed it with so many wonderful donations from all of you that the rundown interior went unnoticed, and instead we created mazes of aisles and bookcases filled with treasures. It was fun for everyone. A funny thing happened the day we finished moving. The shop stood empty and my heart was feeling rather emotional about saying goodbye. I was in line at the IGA, and next to me was a man with a black and white dog. I stared at him and asked. “Six years ago, do you remember I took a photo of you and your dog? Because you were our very first customer on opening day at our shop?” He thought about it and remembered! I said how strange and fitting that today is our last day, and here you both are again. I again took their photo in front of

our shop. When I went inside, the radio was playing a song about angels. I got huge goosebumps. I do want to say a very special thank you to our friend Ernie Coleson. Six years ago he was the plaza’s property manager. It was thanks to Ernie that we were given the opportunity to try out the vacant shop for a weekend yard sale. He encouraged the owner to give us a chance. We did, and rented it for six years after that. Ernie was a great friend. He explained the circuit breaker box and helped us figure things out while we got settled. It was with great sadness when we lost Ernie years later. But we will never stop thinking of him and his kindness. Our current shop is at Cattail Farm, 1784 Post Road. Our neighbors are frogs who live in the pond and they sing duets with the redwing blackbirds. It’s lovely and currently very alive with the peepers. We’ve opened the porch in the farmhouse attached to our shop and our resident kitties who await adoption are enjoying the sunshine. Kanga, the queen of our shop kitties (photo), lays on her back at checkout to charm shoppers. Don’t forget that the revenue from our shop pays our vet bills. Without it we couldn’t afford all the surgeries, exams, tests and lifesaving emergency room visits we provide the kitties we rescue. We receive donations on Saturday only from noon-3 p.m. Please bring us your best, because it’s expensive for us to dump it in the trash. Reform Physical Therapy of Kennebunk, led by Bobby Cochrane, PT, DPT, SCS, CSCS, is now open in the Lower Village, next to Live Cafe. The company, owned by Jill Partridge, is a general orthopedic outpatient physical therapy practice with clinics also in Topsham and Yarmouth. Licensed physical therapists use their one-on-one therapy sessions to treat the individual as a whole, not just the injury. A group of like-minded healthy lifestyle businesses have opened recently at the LIVE Well-
ness Complex at 169 Port Road. It has become a hub for local residents and tourists alike. There is LIVE Cafe, a healthy eats graband-go restaurant, Mainely Cycles for all cycling needs, Maine Revolution Spin Studio and, of course, now Reform Physical Therapy. “I’m very excited about Reform Physical Therapy joining the other tenants at the newly named LIVE Wellness Complex,” says Fred Forsley, founder of the LIVE Wellness Complex and president of Shipyard Brewing Company. Reform Physical Therapy of Kennebunk is located at 169 Port Road, Suite 21, Kennebunk. For more information, call 207-2040679 or visit www.reform-pt.com.
Local Historical Society Reduces Carbon Footprint in Wells WELLS Since 1969, the Historical Society of Wells & Ogunquit has been housed in the iconic 1862 First Church Meetinghouse on Post Road. Preserving the National Register-listed structure has long been a focus for the society and now, thanks to generous grant funding from both Wells and Ogunquit, they are reducing their carbon footprint, too. The extensive project involved insulating the attic and first floor of the meetinghouse and library, as well as wrapping the existing ductwork. These energy upgrades will significantly reduce the society’s heating costs, and reduce the environmental impact of their operations, one of their stated goals. Buildings comprise 40% of the energy consumption in the U.S., and the society is eager to do their part in lowering this number. Additionally, the project used blown-in cellulose and mineral wool batt insulation which are both natural materials with low environmental impacts. Funding for the project, which totalled $26,000, was provided by joint grants from the towns of Wells and Ogunquit. The funding was approved by voters in the July 2020 elections. The pandemic provided chal-
lenges for many municipalities, and in light of this, an anonymous Ogunquit resident donated Ogunquit’s portion of the grant to ensure the project could move forward. “This year has been quite a challenge for all of us,” says Society Board Chairwoman Irene Crocker, “We are grateful to both towns, and to our anonymous donor, for making this project possible. We’ve accomplished a lot this year and it gives me hope that 2021 will be just as successful and maybe even more so!” The insulation project is just one step for the historical society, which recently completed a five-year capital plan. This year the society has a matching grant from the Davis Family Foundation to repair and paint the meetinghouse interior, for which they are currently raising funds. Future projects include installing heat pumps, which also provide air conditioning. Other goals include painting the exterior painting, ADA accessibility upgrades, new signage, digitizing their archives, and repairing the historic 1868 bell, which has been silent for the last four years. Kennebunk Savings Celebrates 150 Years in the Community KENNEBUNK Kennebunk Savings is excited to celebration its 150th anniversary all year long! Founded in 1871 and continuously headquartered in Kennebunk, it has maintained its mutual form of organization with no shareholders or direct owners and a continued emphasis on customers, communities, and employees. “From our founding as a small savings bank in a shared office in Kennebunk, we’ve grown into a local institution, employing 330 people across 17 branches in two states,” said Bradford C. Paige, the bank’s President and CEO. “But our philosophy remains the same – we are here to serve our customers and to help our communities

“He’s excited to celebrate this milestone anniversary!” In its 150 years, Kennebunk Savings has experienced a number of firsts, including its first branch office, which was located in York Village and opened in 1969. North Berwick followed in 1971, the bank’s 100th year in operation. The first computers were introduced to its branches in 1987 and online banking, or “Kenn-e-banking” as it was known, was introduced in the year 2000. And in 2010, Milda Castner became the Bank’s first female Director, rising to become the first female Chair of the Board in 2018, a position she still holds today. “It’s difficult to put together a comprehensive list of all of our achievements over the past century and a half,” said Paige. “But we as current employees are incredibly proud of the bank’s legacy of community impact.” “Kennebunk Savings is committed to serving our communities,” said Dennis Byrd, Chief Operating Officer. “We like to say that it’s not what we give, but what we do. We donate money to food banks, but just as importantly our employees donate their personal time to volunteering at soup kitchens. And that’s what really makes me proud about coming to work every day.” The theme for the year is “Celebrating our past, driving our future.” The bank has celebrations and activities planned which are connected to the bank’s rich history and deep community roots. “We’re pulling boxes of photos out of basements and reaching out to former employees for stories, but we’re also honestly thinking about what the next 150 years will look like – and how we’ll all move forward together,” said Paige.
up for emergency vet visits, additional shipping fees, or even a COVID-19 test. The scammers ask for more money to resolve the problem, often promising to refund it after the pet is delivered. They may even claim that the pet will be euthanized if you don’t pay up. Once they’ve gotten your money, scammers disappear. The dog never existed. How to avoid pet adoption scams? Never buy or adopt a pet without seeing it in person. This is the best way to ensure
you aren’t caught in a con. Do an internet search of the pet’s image. If you do find a puppy online, upload the pet’s photo to a reverse image search. If you find multiple pet adoption sites using the same picture, it’s probably a scam. thrive.” The bank is kicking off its 150th celebration by funding its Community Promise program with a commitment for $1 million in donations to local nonprofits in 2021. Since its inception in 1994, the Bank’s Community Promise Program has donated over $14 million to nonprofits in the southern York County and seacoast New Hampshire area. The bank will be celebrating with a number of other initiatives and activities in 2021, including the unveiling of a new website, and a new look for their longtime mascot, Kenny Bear. “Kenny’s a little lighter on his feet now,” said Jenn Straetz, a spokesperson for the bank specializing in Mascot Relations.
Rep. Tim Roche Chosen for Education & Cultural Affairs Committee AUGUSTA Representative Tim Roche of Wells has been appointed to the Legislature’s Education and Cultural Affairs Committee, where he will be responsible for reviewing all proposed bills relating to improving education and modifying practices for remote learning. Reached for comment this week, Rep. Roche is looking forward to serving on a legislative panel which has a direct impact on the next generation of Mainers. “When I ran for office last year I heard everywhere I went how tough it was for students of all ages to keep up with the changes.. That transition has been difficult for teachers as well, and I know so many families out there worried about less in-person school days and cancelled extracurricular activities. I think this will be a busy com-
mittee for me to serve my first term on, and I hope to learn a lot about what works best in different parts of the State.” This committee faces an ambitious workload this session including the review of legislative proposals relating to the Department of Education; State Board of Education; school finance, governance and administration; school budgets; school facilities; curriculum, instruction and assessment; teachers and administrators; special education and child development services; education of deaf and hard-of-hearing students; career and technical education; charter schools, alternative education, school choice and homeschooling; school district reorganization; online learning; student health, nutrition and safety;
...FEES from page 22 lems start. One victim reported driving to the “shelter” to pick up their new dog, only to find no such address existed. “I called, and they texted me that they are coming down with the puppy. I asked them where and no answer. Finally, after 10 calls the phone was not accepting any calls! By then it was quite clear I am not getting the puppy and I’m out $300.” In other versions of the scam, the con artists offer to ship the dog. But first you need to pay
