50th Earth Day Anniversary Brings the Art of Coming Together YORK COUNTY The Planeteers of Southern Maine are hosting a project to celebrate the 50th Earth Day Anniversary and invites all to participate in the “Climate Community Clothesline”. Since the seacoast communities cannot get together for the usual Earth Day celebration, The Planeteers are excited to have residents create flags at home that will then be strung together when healthy safety allows us to reunite. So first consider: When it comes to the planet, what’s your passion or peeve? Second: Create
a flag or pennant (no larger than a pillow case) that reflects that. Third: Starting on Earth Day, April 22, hang it up on your front door, window, fence, or if very rural, perhaps ask a local shop to show it off. Fourth: Take a photo and email it, along with title and name, to info@someplaneteers. org and to SoMePlaneteers on Instagram and Facebook with hashtag #EarthDay2020 and #SoMePlaneteers. Lastly: Once we’re able to come together again, the flags will be strung together and the collection can become a traveling show be-
tween libraries with ceremonies at each stop. The Planeteers of Southern Maine is a grassroots effort dedicated to creating a sustainable future for the planet and more specifically for southern Maine. They seek to expand local communities’ use of alternative energies, to increase energy conservation, to reduce solid waste, to engage local municipalities and businesses in developing sustainability plans, and to engage area students in sustainability projects. King Pushes to Support Local Journalism Amid Pandemic STATEWIDE U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) recently joined a group of nineteen senators seeking to support local journalism and media in any future coronavirus relief package. In a letter to Senate leadership and appropriators, the senators stress that the widespread impact of the pandemic – including plummeting advertising revenue – could decimate regional and local news outlets even as communities have become increasingly reliant on their reporting amidst the public health crisis. ~ News ~ Governor Mills’ Executive Orders Update Extending Civil Emergency
Tuesday, April 14 – Governor Janet Mills signed a proclamation extending Maine’s state of civil emergency for another thirty days through May 15. A state of civil emergency places Maine on highest alert and allows Governor Mills to deploy all available state resources to protect the health and safety of Maine people. It also eases Maine’s access to critical federal aid to boost response efforts. FMI: coronavirus.maine.gov.
Moving Primary Election to July 14
Friday, April 10 – Governor Mills signed an Executive Order moving Maine’s primary election from Tuesday, June 9 to Tuesday, July 14. The Order allows applications for absentee ballots to be made in writing or in person, without specifying a reason, up to and including the day of the
election. Absentee ballots issued more than three months before June 9 still remain valid for use. The delay in the primary election will provide additional time for Maine people to request absentee ballots in order to minimize in-person interaction at the polls and will allow the Secretary of State’s Office additional time to develop guidelines to help municipalities conduct in-person voting in as safe a manner as possible. It also extends the deadline for qualifying contributions under the Maine Clean Election Act to May 19. To become eligible for Clean Elections funding, candidates must collect a minimum number of checks or money orders of $5, but the Stay Healthy at Home Order prevents candidates from traveling door to door to collect such contributions. Candidates can and should now obtain these contributions online.
Wednesday, April 8 – Governor Mills signed an Executive Order allowing remote notarization. The Order temporarily suspends the provisions of Maine law that require the physical presence of a notary or witness with certain exceptions. The Order will allow Maine people, especially those who are elderly or have under-
lying health conditions, to conduct important business that requires sworn statements or affidavits with minimal in-person interaction. Exceptions include: solemnizing marriages; administering oaths to circulators of state or local direct initiative or referendum petitions and
nomination petitions of candidates for electoral office; and absentee ballots in state and local elections. The Order also establishes parameters to conduct remote notarization services in order to safeguard the

KENNEBUNK Hi friends, it’s your favorite Hound Dog Beverly! I know today is a cold and gloomy day, and I’m very happy to be with my foster family, indoors where it is warm and cozy, but I want to tell you about my exciting adventure last week! On one of the days with very nice weather, I went out with Jasmine, one of my AWS pals. We took a long walk in the woods. There were lots of trails to explore and each trail smelled deliciously of squirrels. Did I tell you how much I love squirrels? Love to chase that is! I have been told I am the

best squirrel chaser on this side of the East coast. If I pick up the scent, I’ll tree any squirrel I find! Anyway, back to my adventure... We walked and walked and walked and came to this beautiful body of water. Jasmine told me it was a river. I thought it looked so cool and

inviting. I went out on a limb (literally) to get a better view. Jasmine warned me to be careful, but once I set my mind on something, I am laser focused. I stepped gingerly once, then again, what a beautiful view. Then I tried to take another step and… Splash! Guess what, guys? I love swimming. It’s so much fun! The water was crisp and clear and cool and it was so fun to paddle around. Poor Jasmine was so worried about me. “Bevvy, Bevvy, are you ok?” I could hear her saying as I swam about. I thought, “Gosh, what if she comes in the water after me? I don’t think she’ll like it as much as I do.” So I came out of the water to let her know I was just fine. She gave me a big hug and I got her all wet. So maybe, in my new home, we can take adventures to your closest swimming hole? I know I would love it! the major finance arms offering delayed payment options to customers in the U.S. impacted by COVID-19. Fiat and Jeep primarily relies on Chrysler Capital and Ally Financial to provide funding for leases and new-car purchases, and both are offering a variety of payment relief options, such as Jeep’s “Drive Forward” initiative which offers zero-percent financing for 84 months and no payments for 90 days. Toyota Financial Services is offering payment relief lease-end support for current customers, and 90-day payment deferral for new customers on new and certified retail Toyota vehicles pur-
chased March 18 through May 4. In one of the most expansive programs, Hyundai Motor America’s Assurance Job Loss Protection will make up to six months of payments for new owners who lose their jobs and have purchased or leased their vehicles between March 14 and April 30. Furthermore, anyone who anticipates trouble making their payments should reach out to the financial institution that made the car loan or financed the lease even if that lender is not linked to the manufacturer. This will enable people who owe money on a loan to discuss their options, which can include flex-
ible payment arrangements and payment extensions. Lessees might be able to arrange deferred lease payments as well. With consumer confidence in short supply right now, carmakers are assuring potential car buyers that their affiliated dealerships are open for vehicle sales as well as service. Many are emphasizing their online shopping and vehicle delivery options. For example, GM’s “Shop. Click. Drive.” program at participating dealerships enables customers to browse a dealership’s inventory on desktop and mobile devices 24 hours a day. Through that and similar programs, automakers offer consumers the ability to choose a vehicle, estimate a trade-in value, agree on payment, add accessories, and schedule delivery without ever setting foot into a showroom. In light of the fact that many Americans are self-isolating, automakers hope these options will prompt consumers to reconsider buying a vehicle in what has been and could continue to be a troubling economic time.

Andrée (Dadée) Sabourin Burk, 80 NORTH BERWICK – Andrée (Dadée) Sabourin Burk, 80, of Oak Woods Road, passed away at her home of 50 years with her son and daughter by her side on Sunday, April 5, 2020. Her name was Andrée, but everyone called her Dadée and her granddaughters called her Néné. She was a dignified lady at all times – full of integrity, grace, positivity, intelligence, humor, and generosity for all. Dadée was born in SaintJean-sur-Richelieu in the Province of Québec, Canada on May 25, 1939. She was the middle child of Carmen Rioux Sabourin and Ivan Sabourin. She grew up with her older sister and best friend, Marthe Sabourin Pascucci and younger brother Ivan Sabourin Jr., in a beautiful historic manor surrounded by love, conversation, classical music,
opera, piano playing, art, education, travel, and many eccentric moments. She graduated with a liberal arts degree from Marianopolis College in Westmount (Montréal), Québec. In 1961, she worked in Perkins Cove, Ogunquit, a renown artists’ community, and met the love of her life and husband of 54 years, George Burk. Both were artists to the core and they established their permanent residence in 1967 at Busari Farm, their country home in North Berwick where they raised their two children, Efram Burk and Jennica Burk Osborne. Dadée and George shared a love for their property and nature – they were frequently seen sitting by their pond counting ducks and geese or listening to the bullfrogs and peepers. They loved watching the birds (especially cardinals) which they fed by their kitchen door. Dadée was an avid gardener who added more gardens to her home, perfectly placing sculptures, granite stones, and paths, amongst the flowers and bushes. She enjoyed sitting in her car watching the waves, beach, and sky, at Wells Beach or watching the moon rise at Ogunquit Beach with her “moon crew.” She was a prolific artist known for her realistic portraits and still-lifes of flowers, fruits,

and vegetables, in the medium of graphite and watercolor. Dadée and George hosted and participated in weekly sketch groups with their artist friends throughout their lives, and most recently she spent her Saturdays with her tightly-knit sketch group at various homes and the Wentworth Greenhouse. As an innovator in the field of adult education, she founded MSAD 60’s Noble Adult Education Program in 1981, and acted as its director until she retired in 1999. She instituted all adult learning programs in our community, and was the first to encourage and champion her students. She was a master at listening to their needs and stories. Dadée immediately made you feel important and unique. When you were with her, you felt that she was hosting a morning talk show, feeding your soul with goodness and wisdom with her soothing voice. Things you may or may not know about Dadée: She was a linguist who spoke multiple languages and she corrected the grammar of her children, grandchildren, and their friends. She was a devoted and loving grandmother who was frequently seen driving, painting, chatting, or cooking, with Katherine and THANK YOU ST. FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth.
Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased.

fire going, sipping Prosecco with her son Efram while listening to Pergolesi. She loved to go to the cove for a Barnacle Billy’s lobster roll and rum punch topped with a floater. She was a passionate and well-versed reader, an art and antique collector, and she wore tons of scarves, sunglasses, jewelry, and perfumes. She loved the color green, marbles of all colors and sizes, Steven Seagal, Babe, American flags, and wind chimes. She spoke with her children every day of their lives. She

As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief.

Lizzy. She was always up for a trip to Italy to be with her beloved sister Marthe and family, or to Canada to be with her cousin Monique and family. She was a “great” driver of big cars and a gracious hostess, known for her tortière pies, baked ham, and quiches. She was highly observant of others and the world around her; she could find resemblances in everything, and she could point out how an animal or tree branch was identical to a certain person. missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Tick Season is Upon Us STATEWIDE It is that time of year again when we start seeing an increase in tick populations and bites. During this pandemic, people are getting cabin fever and spending more time outdoors cleaning around their property, playing with their children and grandchildren, and hiking locally. Clinics have already received calls from patients indicating they have found ticks crawling on
them or have removed embedded ticks. Early treatment helps reduce the incidence of the progression to tick-borne diseases. According to the Centers for Disease Control, it is now estimated that approximately 300,000 people may contract Lyme disease annually in the United States. Lyme disease is the most reported tick-borne illness in the Unites States and is caused by the Borrelia bacteria that is injected into the host. Its

various effects depend on the extent and stage of the disseminated spirochete. If Lyme disease goes untreated soon after being infected, patients may develop chronic illness. Aside from the typical initial bullseye rash (erythema migrans) that a small percentage of patients develop at the site of the tick bite, they may present with non-descript flulike symptoms (fevers, fatigue, joint pain, headaches), facial nerve palsy, and other neurological symptoms. A more serious manifestation of this disease is cardiac complications. Furthermore, a single tick can be infected with and transmit several other bacterial, viral, and protozoan pathogens at the same time (co-infections). For many patients, there are various challenges to obtaining an accurate diagnosis of Lyme disease and co-infections as many people never recall having a tick bite. These tickborne diseases can mimic other chronic diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), depression, anxiety, arthritis, fibromyalgia, etc. Most patients visit various providers without successfully finding a diagnosis or a treatment. Most people who have been “undiagnosed” and present in our clinic for Lyme disease and/ or co-infection treatment, often have multiple overlapping factors causing them to remain ill. They may develop hormonal imbalances, thyroid disease, nutritional deficiencies, and dysfunction of their autonomic nervous system which regulates breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure, digestion, etc. Occasionally, we see a reactivation of other viruses such as: EBV, CMV, and

Maine Medical Joins Clinical Trials PORTLAND – Maine Medical Center has joined a pair of clinical trials designed to examine the efficacy of the drug Remdesivir for treatment of moderate and severe COVID-19. The trials’ Principal Investigator is David Seder, M.D., MMC’s chief of critical care, and was organized under the Maine Medical Center Research Institute (MMCRI). MMC enrolled its first patient in the study of treatment for severe disease on April 9 and now has three patients enrolled in that study. MMC has not yet enrolled patients in the study of moderate disease. Study participants must be at least 12years old, be hospitalized with COVID-19, have no underlying significant kidney or liver dysfunction and not be pregnant or breastfeeding. “Unless clinical research is conducted to identify which treatments are effective, doctors, nurses and other frontline caregivers will continue to be limited in how they can care for these patients,” Dr. Seder said. “Clinical trials require multi-disciplinary teams who are dedicated to

advancing science and patient care so we can develop effective, evidence-based therapies.” While a preliminary study of 53 patients showed Remdesivir may have some clinical activity against COVID-19, the drug is not yet licensed or approved in the United States and has not been demonstrated to be effective for the treatment of COVID-19. These two studies will enroll up to 7600 patients worldwide. They being sponsored by Gilead Sciences Inc., which manufactures the drug. “One of our responsibilities at MMCRI is to give Maine people access to important clinical trials like this one that gives them access to potential treatments,” said MMC’s Chief Academic Officer Doug Sawyer, M.D. “While participation in a clinical trial does not guarantee patients they will be cured, and not everyone is eligible for participation, without such trials we will never learn more about how to fight this novel disease.” Currently, MMC is the only hospital enrolling patients in this study in Maine.

Many kitties are still available and will be wonderful new members of your household. See them on our website at www.safehavenhumanesociety.org, which will link you to Petfinder’s in-depth profiles. We’re happy to share that some of our shyer and socially challenged kitties are now in great homes and doing well – Like Miss Poppy, who was adopted with her friend Diamond. Miss Poppy was especially deserving. She was the feral kitty who doted on her kittens despite
her broken leg. She lived at Safe Haven for many years, because she didn’t “show well.” It took two very special people, June and Roy, to see through her fear. Our heartfelt thanks to all who’ve adopted shy or feral kitties. Safe Haven is on a very tight budget now. Our thrift shop is closed and our income has basically ceased. But we couldn’t say no to a stray kitty needing emergency surgery. Her foster mom has named her Honey (see photo). She is recovering well from her
surgery and is a very sweet girl about two years old. Volunteers and friends pooled their money for her initial treatment. We’ve launched a “Money for Honey” fundraiser to pay the rest. Want to help us out?
Mail a tax-deductible donation to Safe Haven, PO Box 91, Wells, ME 04090, or use your credit/ debit card or Paypal on our secure website. We appreciate your support no matter the size. Since both of our thrift
shops sit closed, our volunteers still make the trip to care for our in-house kitties. They’re lonely, so they entertain plaza shoppers by sitting in the windows as they come and go. We pray we can reopen in the near future!

There must also be repair of the overall damage that the infections caused in order to get a person back to baseline or close to it. The number of reported cases of Lyme disease in Maine alone has quadrupled since 2005. A great deal of research has focused recently on improving early diagnosis and treatment. If you suspect you have Lyme disease and are interested in an evaluation, schedule an appointment with a doctor. During this COVID-19 pandemic, appointments are being conducted via Telehealth. Utilize take-out and curbside to-go services (websites like Portland Food Map are keeping updated lists of restaurants offering these services). Always call first and consider tipping more than usual! Purchase merchandise from the business’ website – obviously retail locations, but many businesses and organizations in all industries offer merchandise such as clothing, hats, glassware, posters, and more. Buy online and have it shipped to your door! See if your service providers offer virtual options: Tax accountants, business coaches, yoga instructors, etc. If you can’t afford to show monetary support, share the website or social media account of your favorite business or organization and encourage others to support them. Offer up to help in any way you can. Help deliver products to those in need. Volunteer your time to help feed the hungry. Put together packets for school children. Provide child-care for those still working (especially those in health care and medical fi elds) and in need of a helping hand. Post a video of teaching others about a favorite skill or technique. Lastly, share posts, photos, and actions with the hashtag #PayItForwardMaine, and encouraging others to do the same.
This effort is supported by several Chambers of Commerce and community partners, including our own from Ogunquit and Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel. The Ogunquit Chamber of Commerce hopes to promote their members utilizing #PayitForwardMaine by posting business offerings on their Pay it Forward Maine page on www.ogunquit.org, in their upcoming newsletters, on the chamber Facebook page, and on the Ogunquit NOW Facebook public forum. Their website has further details as well as a tool kit to help promote the campaign. The Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel Chamber of Commerce has developed a program called “Pay Now, Play Later”, which they plan to incorporate into #PayitForwardMaine as an added bonus to their members. The program encourages locals, summer residents, and visitors to pay now for something they can enjoy later. This can include gift certificates for dining, hotels, stores, memberships, and more, and could also include an incentive such as $120 of gift cards for $100 for example. Further details on this offering can be found at www. gokennebunks.com. Learn more about the campaign and how you can get involved by visiting www.payitforwardmaine.com.
