Remembering Barbara Bush: First Among Ladies By Timothy Gillis KENNEBUNKPORT Former First Lady Barbara Bush passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2018, surrounded by family and loved ones at her home in Houston, TX. She was 92 years old, the wife of the 41st president, George H.W. Bush, and the mother of the 43rd president, George W. Bush. She was a champion of healthcare for children and was the namesake of the Barbara Bush Medical Center in Portland. Bush, former first lady and president of the U.S. This photo is from 2009 at the Ogunquit Playhouse. Bush. Her unwavering support for chil-
dren’s health and deep commitment to the hospital that bears her name moved many to share her passion and improve the health of our state’s youngest and most vulnerable patients,” said Rich Petersen, Maine Medical Center president and CEO. “She connected with every child and family member she met during her many visits to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital. Many of those children have grown to be healthy adults and still treasure that connection. She was inspired by our care teams, and they were inspired by her passion and dedication. We will all miss her greatly.” Mrs. Bush and her husband,
President George H.W. Bush, joined MMC on September 28, 1995 for the announcement that Maine’s only children’s hospital would be named in honor of First Lady Barbara Bush. Since then, both have been important members of the Maine Medical Center family, and The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital has been among their most passionate causes. “It is so very important to have a children’s hospital here in Maine,” Mrs. Bush said during the naming ceremony in 1995. “Children are society’s most precious asset, and their See BUSH page 4...

In addition to the big Earth Day events, the Planeteers also support other non-profits in the area. The Planeteers have organized a full day’s worth of ac-

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Waterhouse Center on Main Street in Kennebunk, there will be a Celebration of Earth and Science entitled “What would Rachel do?” As Rachel Carson said, “The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.” Join your neighbors, farmers, scientists, artists, non-prof-

is a non-profit organization dedicated to marine mammal and sea turtle response, rescue, care, research and education. The non-profit was founded in 2011 to fill a gap in the need to respond to stranded sea mammals. It is the only organization federally authorized to carry out this work in southern and midcoast Maine. With two staff and a dedicated volunteer team, MMoME provides expert stranding response along roughly 2,500 miles of Maine’s coastline (including islands), from Kittery to Rockland. Through this hotline, anyone can report a stranded seal, whale, dolphin, porpoise or sea turtle to an experienced, dedicated team ready to respond. MMoME also operates a triage center for seals, providing shortterm care for critically injured animals before their transport to long-term care facilities. The program will offer a slideshow, as well as some hands-on activities and demonstrations. This program is free and all ages are welcome to participate. The onions are shipped immediately after being harvested and should arrive early to mid-May. Congdon’s Doughnuts on Route 1 has offered their facility for the pick-up site. Each order comes with a complimentary locally sourced cookbook filled with onion recipes as well as tips on storage. The deadline for placing an order is April 28. ...BUSH from page 1 care must be among our highest priorities.â€? Her passing was felt immediately by admirers far and near. “Mrs. Bush left an indelible imprint on this community through her many good works, whether it was reading to local school children or through the hospital bearing her name. She always had a smile and a kind word, was passionate about the cause of literacy, and embraced the community she called home for six months each year,â€? said Laura Dolce, executive director of the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel Chambers of Commerce. “She was a familiar face each morning walking her dogs on Gooch’s Beach, greeting people each year at the Memorial Day parade, and at the region’s many shows, shops and restaurants. Her grace and kindness will be missed by all.â€? The Bushes spend their summers in Kennebunkport and frequent area shops and restaurants. They are well known at Barnacle Billy’s in Ogunquit, where they’re said to have their
own corner table on the deck, and were regular patrons of the Ogunquit Playhouse. One of their favorite spots is H.B. Provisions in Kennebunk, owned by Helen Thorgalsen and Bonnie Clement. Reporters filled their store on Wednesday morning, looking at photographs of past Bush visits on the wall while soaking up the memories her death has elicited. “Both Helen and I are incredibly sad, Clement said. “But I think we are also celebrating her life and the wonders that she brought to our community, our state, our county, our world. She’s a big lady with a lot of passion. She has certainly touched our lives and a lot of people’s lives. We were just a small part of all the people she’s known. The friendship with the Bushes began almost two decades ago. “They came into the store. We had met them before, but that sort of sealed our relationship, Clement said. “We’ve been invited to events in Houston and (Washington) D.C. We were fortunate to be a part of their life. This summer will be very, very different without her here. We’re not even sure how that will be.

~ News ~ Earth Day Road Cleanup SOUTH BERWICK This weekend (April 21 and 22), the Town of South Berwick Conservation Commission will be sponsoring its annual Earth Day Road Cleanup. Residents of South Berwick are encouraged to team up with friends and family to “adopt” a road and make it the cleanest road in town.
For two days only, a special dumpster will be provided at the Town of South Berwick Transfer Station for free disposal of roadside trash collected. The South Berwick Transfer Station hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday. This year when you bring the trash you will be en-
tered to win a raffle prize. We can all appreciate that keeping our roads free of trash helps to make our neighborhoods and Town look good. Additionally, roadside trash often washes into rivers and streams where it can choke or disable wildlife, such as ducks, fish, frogs, turtles and birds. In one study, research-
ers found that 18 percent of all litter ends up in our streams and waterways as pollution. Removing roadside litter helps to protect important resources of South Berwick such as the Great Works and Salmon Falls rivers, as well as their streams and tributaries. Please always consider your safety first while cleaning up
along the roadside. Wear bright colored clothing or safety vests and wear gloves. Children should be of an appropriate age and well supervised by an adult. For more information, call 384-3300 ext 336 (South Berwick Conservation Commission voice mail), or email Pat Robinson at prnel@ comcast.net.
Annual Dragonfly Nymph Program WELLS Dragonfly nymphs are the beginning stage of the commonly called “Devil’s Darning Needle” or “Mosquito Hawk” native to the woodland ponds and swampy areas of the world. They are considered beneficial insects as they reduce populations of pest insects in their surrounding environment. They do not sting and do not bite humans. Dragonflies are also very beautiful and friendly additions to your neighborhood. Nymphs can be introduced
to fresh water ponds, marshes, swamps and other slow-moving waterways where they will complete their metamorphosis into adults and continue to prey upon mosquitoes in large quantities. To order dragonf ly nymphs, download the order form from www.wellschamber. org or for more information, contact the Wells Chamber of Commerce at 207-646-2451 or wellschamber@wellschamber.org. Deadline is Friday, May 4, and delivery is currently scheduled for May 18/19 and May 25/26.

~ News ~ Lecture Revisits Native American Enslavement in Colonial Northeast SOUTH BERWICK On Thursday, April 26, Mount Holyoke College professor Christine DeLucia will explore indigenous enslavement and unfreedom in colonial New England and the Atlantic world. In her new book, “Landscapes of Bondage and Refuge: Revisiting Enslavement, Resistance, and Memory in the Native and Colonial Northeast, DeLucia presents a narrative of Native American communities of the northeast, and how they maintained deep traditions of sheltering relations and refugees during times of conflict. Highlighting home sites, river routes, and swamps, that played powerful roles in captivity and bids for liberation and security, the talk weaves together documentary sources, material culture objects and oral traditions. “We have the opportunity to examine a part of the Native American experience we do not get taught about in school, said Nicole St. Pierre, OBHS vice-president. “To learn about the fallout of King Philip’s War and how it created the struggle of not just survival, but actual freedom, for Native Americans in the northeast will likely be an eye-opening topic for our audi-
ence. DeLucia received her doctorate in American Studies from Yale University. She earned master’s degrees from both Yale University, and the University of St. Andrew’s in Scotland, and received her bachelor’s degree from Harvard College. Her focus of studies include Native
American and Indigenous studies; early American studies; settler colonialism; New England regional and town history; environmental and landscape history; material culture; memory, monuments, and public history; cartography and cultural geography; and decolonizing and collaborative methodologies. The lecture is hosted by the Old Berwick Historical Society, and begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Commons Dining Hall
at Berwick Academy in South Berwick. Admission is free and
open to the public. Donations are gratefully accepted.

Special Reading of T.S. Eliot’s Poetry YORK John Farrell will give a special reading of one of the greatest poems from the last century’s greatest poet—“Four Quartets” by Thomas Stearns Eliot. And he will read this epic from memory! First undertaken in 2011 with permission—rarely granted— from T.S. Eliot’s estate, Farrell’s recitation of Four Quartets affords audiences an opportunity to immerse themselves in 1,000 lines of poetry exploring humankind’s relationship with time and with experience itself. Eliot completed Four Quartets in 1941, as Britain slid into the abyss of World War II, and he feared that civilization itself might perish in the coming years. Writing at the height of his artistic powers, Eliot packed into the suite of poems a summation

of his views on poetry and art, on mystical experience, and on the never-ceasing search for the divine. “Unlike encountering the poems in a book,” Farrell says, “hearing the poems recited out loud gives people a chance to absorb a complex and nuanced work in a very direct way. At the same time, I bring an actor’s sensibility to the text and a commitment to delivering the poems in a way that allows the poetry to speak for itself.” The tour of Four Quartets is generously supported by the Maine Theater Fund of the Maine Community Foundation, in addition to an Arts & Humanities grant from the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Arts Commission, an independent state agency supported by the National Endowment for the Arts. The performance, which is part of Figures of Speech Theatre’s 2018 Maine Library Tour, is free and open to all. An informal conversation with John Farrell will follow. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Gallery Opening Brings in Spring SOUTH BERWICK Emporium Framing and Gallery presents the vibrant, warm artwork of Edward V. Sabatini for their opening on Friday, April 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. This is official kick-off event for the new owners, Elizabeth Woodbury-Dunn and Lisa Bedell-Cheever, and you will be able to enjoy the art with complimentary beverages and snacks. Sabatini (born 1949 in Jersey City, NJ) paints large canvas, floral inspired abstract acrylics and medium sized landscape watercolors. Utilizing his training, knowledge, and experience with positive and negative space, light and life, Sabatini now takes his time and energy to project his gratitude and joy through his art. In this exhibit one observes the progression of technique and experience over time as well his expression of ‘soul place.’ His first wet-onwet watercolor abstract in 1972, ‘Tree Frog’ (1986), and ‘Big Red Barn’ (2012) demonstrate development of technique and physical places of his life. In the collection of abstracts one can observe his technique of creating overlapping, fluid shapes that are deep yet translucent. In the most recent large canvas works he has combined his watercolor with acrylic abstract techniques,
inspired by the beautiful flowers and light from the historic farm he shares with his wife, Ingrid in Alfred, called Three Charms Farm. Sabatini was introduced to his own artistic affinity and interest through an elective course as he began his secondary education at Lycoming College and received his B.A. with a focus in Fine Art from Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA in 1972. For the next 45 years, Sabatini continued to paint and receive professional creative training even though his primary energy was in the successful creation of construction, landscaping and most recently, farm businesses. His continued art training See SABATINI page 14...

Holocaust, Genocide Survivors’ Work on Display KITTERY Observing the April commemorations of the Armenian Genocide and the Jewish Holocaust, Kittery’s Haley Art Gallery will showcase works by survivors, Berj Kailian and Sam Bak. The works will remain on view throughout May. On Thursday, April 26 at 7 p.m., the Gallery will screen The Promise—a historical drama film directed by Terry George, starring Christian Bale, Oscar Isaac, and Charlotte Le Bon—with audience discussion following. The event is free and open to the public. Space is limited. The late, Berj Kailian, born on October 25, 1914 in Keghi, Armenia, lived through the atrocities of the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire. Her father was imprisoned and tortured by the Ottoman authorities
and later asked to dig his own grave where he was buried alive. Berj was the only child (out of four) to survive the forced marches, along with her mother, through historic Armenia (present day Eastern Turkey) and across the scorching hot, Syrian desert. “Art was a natural selection” Berj said “because I could express a great deal of thought and emotion through it in my own way.” Sam Bak, born on August 12, 1933 in Vilna, Poland (now Vilnius, Lithuania), along with his family was forced into the Vilna ghetto and later into a labor camp, and then smuggled from the camp and given refuge in a monastery, and along with

BUSINESS & FINANCE How High Schoolers Can Boost American Business
This article was submitted by JD Hoye, the president of NAF. STATEWIDE Media reports tend to focus on the lack of science, tech, and math skills. But more than four in 10 business executives complain that too many job applicants lack “soft skills like creativity, teamwork, and communication. Indeed, a full half of the nation’s hiring managers say the college graduates they meet are short on “critical thinking and problem solving skills and the ability to pay adequate “attention to detail. Closing this soft skills gap is critical. Fortunately, business leaders don’t have to wait on schools or colleges to step in. They can easily take action on their own. It all starts at the local high school. With well-designed internship programs, businesses can help young people acquire the full range of skills they need to be successful throughout their lives. While many employers have internship programs for college students and recent graduates, smart companies will get a head start on building a workforce by identifying and developing even younger talent. Employers who have already opened their door to high school interns have witnessed the contributions that young people bring to their businesses from day one. A recent survey found that 45 percent of those who offer internships to high schools were “very likely or “completely likely to extend full-time job offers to their former interns. As David Bilodeau, a senior member of the technical staff of Verizon, explains, “(Students) don’t have any preconceived notions of what you can and can’t do, and that’s invaluable. He estimates that Verizon makes a “tenfold return on its investment in interns. One in four business leaders say they get fresh ideas from their high school interns. I know from personal experience what high school interns bring to business. The organization I lead, NAF, helps high school students qualify for and obtain intern slots at top companies like Verizon, Capital One, and Marriott. Throw away any pre-conceived notions of interns making coffee; our students work in robotics, plan events, and devise cost-cutting strategies. By the time they finish
their internships, they have enough confidence to run social media campaigns, develop business plans, and cold-call sales leads. That’s value added for companies and marketable skills for student resumes. Reaching out to high schoolers also offers tremendous potential in an area of perennial concern for employers: diversity. Due to structural barriers, too many young people of color
never make it to college or leave before they finish. A New York University study found that over “60 percent of the racial gap in college completion rates can be attributed to factors that occur before college. Put simply, companies that look only to college students and grads put themselves at a diversity disadvantage. See BOOST page 34...

STATEWIDE Maine ranked 11th in a recent study of the most environmentally friendly states, based on three major categories called environmental quality, eco-friendly behavior, and climate-change contributions. Health & Fitness Tips to Avoid Foodborne Illness STATEWIDE Spring is finally here. It has been a long wait, but warmer temperatures bring events like weddings, graduations and holiday celebrations. These events bring together groups of people to enjoy considerable amounts of delicious and often traditional foods. But if proper food safety steps aren’t taken, your celebration could turn into a disaster. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that in the U.S., foodborne illness causes 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths each year. This spring, USDA is offering tips on how to properly handle, cook and store food when serving large groups of people. These tips will keep you and your guests safe from foodborne illness. The Four Basic Steps to Food Safety:
• Having the right kitchen equipment will make your life easier when practicing four food safety steps: clean, separate, cook and chill. • Clean hands frequently with warm soapy water, especially before and after handling raw food; thoroughly wash cutting boards, countertops and utensils with hot soapy water. • Use separate cutting boards for raw and ready-to-eat foods. For example, use one cutting board for produce and a different one for raw meat and poultry. That way, you are preventing cross contamination between raw and ready-to-eatfood. • Always use a food thermometer when cooking. Measure the internal temperature of meats, poultry, and seafood and egg products before serving to make sure they are ready to eat. Perishable food should not

be left out at room temperature for more than two hours. At celebration gatherings, make sure your cold food is kept cold (40°F or below) by serving it in smaller portions and refilling, or by putting the food containers over ice. Hot food should be kept hot (140°F or above); you can keep the food warm by serv-
ing in warming trays or using a slow cooker. Spring Kitchen Basics: • Make sure your refrigerator temperature is set to 40°F or below and your freezer at 0°F or below. An appliance thermometer can come in handy to check those temperatures. • ‘Spring clean’ your fridge

BEACHFIRE IS OPEN!
Naked Cakes: Frosting-Free the Latest Trend A new trend is taking hold both in North America and on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean. Cakes are being pared down so that frosting and fondant coverings are now nearly absent from the confections. They’re called “naked cakes, and these simplified desserts showcase the texture of the cakes and their fillings. According to culinary experts, the idea for the naked cake came from Christina Tosi, owner of Momofuku Milk Bar. It’s an award-winning bakery with locations across the United States and Canada. Now many other pastry chefs and bakers are hopping on the naked cake bandwagon, with the trend being highlighted by the likes of Martha Stewart and the respected wedding resource The Knot. Just because these cakes may be short on exterior but-
tercream doesn’t mean they fall flat on flavor or visual appeal. Cakes can be embellished with fresh blooms, gum paste-molded flowers, edible pearls and gems, fresh berries, and much more. The Knot notes many naked cakes are garnished with flavors that are included in the cake, such as chocolate chips, crumbs, cookie dough, or candy sprinkles. Couples who are stripping down their weddings to include more basics and natural effects may be drawn to these naked cakes. They’re also an option for those who find frosting, buttercream and fondant too sweet for the palate. Naked cakes enable the interior flavors to really shine. ~ Obituaries ~ Anna Brooks Grant, 98 ELIOT – Anna Brooks Grant, 98, passed away after happily spending the last 14 months at Varney Crossing in North Berwick. She loved her room, the caregivers, the food and especially her view. Anna was born at home in Kittery Point on July 28, 1919, one of four children of Phillip and Bertha (Nutter) Brooks. After graduating from R W Traip Academy in 1938, she worked for the Frisbee family in Kittery Point as a housekeeper, in the laundry at Wentworth by the Sea, and at Molly Button before marrying Roger Grant of Island Falls, ME in 1942. After WWII they lived in Kittery Point, York, and Kittery before their final move to Eliot in 1961. Anna then began working for the Department of Health and Human Services lovingly caring for newborns until they were adopted. Anna and Roger built camps in Smyrna Mills, ME, and spent all their vacation time there. At home and at camp there were lively card games and lots of joking with family and friends, always ending with Anna’s delicious pies and desserts. Her homemade donuts were sought after. You felt very special if she gifted you a bag of her donuts. In her 90’s Anna loved feeding and watching birds and the view out her window. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband in 1999, two brothers, Raymond and George, her sister Beatrice, and two sons-in-law James Costello
and Robert Mayo. Anna is survived by three daughters, Patricia (Wesley) Kennedy of South Berwick, Christine Costello of Lebanon and Janis (Donald) Scheithe of Tucson AZ and Howell, Ml. Five adored grandchildren, Wendy (William) Ralph, Rachael Costello, Shannon Costello Pizzimenti, lan (Alexandra) Grace, Jennifer (Emest) Marchi. Step granddaughter,Heidi Mayo (Michael) Butler. Great grandchildren, Catharine, Elizabeth, and Margaret Ralph, Micah Costello, Paul and Mairyn Pizzimenti, Michelle, Devante, Maxwell, and Akeelah Grace, and Joseph (Alyssa), Tyler, Tess, and Tanner Marchi. In accord with Anna’s wishes, there will be only a short graveside service for family at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 26, at Brooks Memorial Cemetery, on State Road in Eliot. Should one desire Anna’s favorite charities are Waban, Sweetzer and the Salavation Army. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.jspelkeyfuneralhome. com. Care for the Grant family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
Stacy R. Haskell, 50 NORTH BERWICK – Stacy R. Haskell, 50, of Maple Street, passed away at home on April 17, 2018. He was born in Sanford, January 2, 1968, the youngest of three children born to Stanley and Irene (Cole) Haskell and attended Noble Schools. Stacy worked with Mike Ryan
in construction, spanning two decades until recently working as a dietary aide at the Kennebunk Nursing Home. Stacy will be remembered as a big teddy bear with a heart of gold. He was the kind of guy who would take the shirt off his back or give anyone his last dollar. In his younger years, he raced at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway and was on the pit crew for Wink Racing and had a collection of NASCAR memorabilia. Stacy enjoyed tinkering on old engines and attending Antique Engine shows with his brother, Dwayne. His greatest love in life was his family. WELLS Tiny Toes became a momma before her own body had reached its adult size. So Tiny Toes is still very small with very tiny—you guessed it—toes. She fed and cared for three kittens alone in the Maine woods. She protected them from predators and even fought off a hungry turkey. She even had a scar on her forehead to prove it. (It’s now gone.) Safe Haven rescued Tiny Toes and her kittens. One kitten,
Goody, is still totally devoted to her and thinks he’s still her baby. But he looks like a moose next to Tiny Toes. They’re an odd couple indeed. Tiny Toes holds Goody firmly in her petite paws and washes his face and ears, even slaps his face if he tries to sneak away before she’s finished. Then Goody returns the favor and grooms his mom. What a darling pair of kitties! Tiny Toes’ face has remarkable markings. Almost as
if someone drew a happy smile on her face with a broad marker. It suits this petite short-haired black and white sweetie perfectly as she’s a very happy kitty. Goody is beautiful, too, with the looks of a Maine Coon mix. He has long silky black hair with a white stripe down his nose. He’s a bit standoffish now, but in a home of their own he’ll become a real lover boy. This spring a young woman visited our shelter. She ignored the kittens, walked past the younger friendlier kitties, and asked to see our older

have the pleasure of helping to find a loving furever home for and humans to call her very own once again. Her previous human, herself elderly and in declining health, was sadly no longer able to care for Muffin and she was brought to us as a result. It is very evident in Muffin’s mannerisms and gentle kind nature that she was very well cared for. When she first arrived, she was a bit confused by being uprooted from the only home she’d ever known so abruptly and appeared some-

what shy and reserved. That did not last long however! Her desire for love, attention and affection and our willingness to shower her with it ultimately won! Muffin is a low key kitty who seeks to find that special person who will sit with her, brush her long fluffy fur and watch tv with her. She is not as of now a lap cat, but she does like sitting very
close by or above you on a chair or sofa softly purring and being spoken to. She seems unphased by mellow dogs or other kitties, though we would stress that gradual introductions and time to adjust if you have other pets in your home be highly insisted upon, especially given her age. A quiet place for her to softly land and enjoy her golden years would be ideal for this darling girl! Muffin is up to date on all of her vaccinations and recently had some dental work done too.

NORTH BERWICK Introducing “Muffin. This sweet 14-year-old elderfur is by far one of our sweetest and most lovable cats we currently
cats. She was delighted to see the loving relationship between Zeus and Marley. She didn’t hesitate when she learned they had to be adopted together. They were a perfect match,
and now Zeus and Marley are in their forever home! It’s been a long wait. Marley came to us in 2011 as a feral kitten, and Zeus in 2012. Zeus and Marley became best friends and looked so similar, they were often mistaken as siblings. With their shy personalities, they were usually overlooked at adoption time. For years they had patiently waited their turn. And now it’s here, and we are thrilled!

at the State Tournament of Odyssey of the Mind. Three teams competed and all three came home with trophies for their divisions. One of the fifth grade teams, the Liquid Solids, have been invited to the World Finals competition at the University of Iowa at the end of May. These kids have created a performance full of silliness, imagination and awesomeness and they are so excited and proud of their achievements so far. They are so appreciative of all the community and school support. They are now actively fundraising to bring their team to Iowa. This is an experience that will educate and inspire these kids for a lifetime
Service for both Lawrence Morrill and his brother Leon Morrill, will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Berwick United Methodist Church, 37 School Street, Berwick. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Berwick. To share a memory or leave a message of condolence, please visit Lawrie’s Book of Memories page at www.bibberfuneral. com. These internships benefit students too, of course. Urban Alliance’s High School Internship Program provides career training, internships, and mentorship to at-risk students in Washington, DC., Baltimore, Northern Virginia, and Chicago. An internal assessment found that completion of an internship correlated with increased rates of college attendance for young men. And whether college-bound or not, students who have completed a high school internship programs enjoy starting wages 11 percent higher than the average for students who have not been interns. Companies across the country can play an active role in shaping the talent pipeline and can be confident in knowing that the solution is closer than they realize -- in local high schools with perfect hires. SPORTS LL & Coastal Riptide Team Up for Multisport Complex WELLS Wells-Ogunquit Little League has announced a partnership, in principal, with Coastal Riptide to build a multisport complex at Tilcon Field. Scheduled to break ground late summer, both organizations have been collaborating with the town to ensure the project is in alignment with community needs. “We approached Coastal Riptide because they share our mission to promote positive player development,â€? said Eric Sargent, Wells-Ogunquit Little League board member. “This partnership allows us to expand our program and its offerings without financial impact to families or the taxpayer. It also provides additional resources to the community that extend beyond baseball.â€? Sargent’s sons, Gage 10, and Michael, 8, both play baseball, and although Sargent was brought up playing football, he got involved with the local little league to support their efforts. The new facility will focus on baseball first, and
then expand to feature soccer and basketball possibly. “Once it’s up and running, they want to make it a multisport complex, which is what we have always wanted for kids in our towns, and surrounding towns, he said. “We’re hoping it’s ready in January (2019) in time for the winter baseball season. The facility will be located at the corner of Swamp John Road and Route 9. “A lot of us are really excited about it, Sargent said. “We decided to partner with Coastal Riptide because they are a teaching organization. Now we can offer a place for our kids to play year-round. The complex will have new indoor fields, renovated outdoor fields, a weight room and enhanced amenities. “Our kids will benefit from having a place where they can be active during the winter months, said Helena Ackerson, Wells-Ogunquit school committee chair. “The complex can also be used for other types of recreation, not just playing baseball. “The facility will offer
space for rent so other teams and organizations can take advantage of the same opportunity. Not only are many youth organizations in need of space, but there are a growing number of adult teams and leagues with limited indoor options, said Travis Carpenter, Wells Ogunquit Little League board member. In the coming months, Coastal Riptide will reach out to other organizations in the Greater Seacoast to assess needs and develop working relationships to fulfill the complex mission of furthering wellness in the community. “We are excited about the opportunity to do more for youth baseball players as well as help others offer athletic and fitness programming year-round, said Jana Doughty, director of operations at Coastal Riptide. “Our purpose is to have a positive impact on health and wellness and we look forward to finding opportunities to expand beyond youth athletics. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, Thank you so much for the wonderful newsletter. I have been subscribed for many years and have learned so much. I’m having a problem with email. I use Hotmail and I made a contact group with a number of neighbors. Unfortunately I can’t seem to use it anywhere but on my laptop. I use my iPad a lot but when I put in the group name nothing comes up. Because it’s an online email program shouldn’t it be available on any platform? I do not use any mail program on my computer. I just go online and sign into Hotmail. It’s very frustrating as I need to add people one by one on my iPad or iPhone. I’d appreciate any help. Thank you, Julie
Dear Julie, I’m afraid I don’t have a quick answer for you, but I am including your question here in case someone else has found an answer. It seems that Gmail works the same way as your Hotmail. Groups can be created and used on a desktop or laptop computer, but not on the phone or tablet versions. The only work around that I have found so far is to go to your sent mail on your device and copy the list of group members from a previously sent message, then paste them into a new message. Another thing you can try is an app called, Edison Mail. It will not use my Gmail groups, but it will use groups that I have created in my contacts on my iPhone and iPad. The only catch here is
that you can’t actually create the group on your phone, you need to have your contacts sync with iCloud, then go to www.icloud. com on your computer, sign into your account and create the group on the web interface. I hope this helps, Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I want to download a video file (of my husband’s memorial service) from my granddaughter’s Facebook page. She gives me permission but I don’t know how. I have a Windows 10 Toshiba notebook. If it cannot be done on mine, what kind of computer can it be done on? Thank you, Beverly Dear Beverly, I am sorry to hear of your loss. Facebook does not appear to have a way to easily download videos to your computer, but with a little bit of research and testing, I have found a simple
trick using Notepad that will allow to save the video of your husband’s memorial service. 1. First, go to your granddaughter’s Facebook page and find the video. 2. Once you have the video playing, right-click on it (I seem to have to right-click twice before the context menu appears) and click on “Show Video URL” in the context menu that appears. 3. A small box will open over your video with a URL (web address) in it. Right-click once on the box, and click “Copy” in the context menu that appears. 4. Now open Notepad. Just click on the start button and type, “Notepad” (without the quotes) and click on the Notepad icon. 5. Paste the video URL into Notepad. The URL you just pasted will start with https:// www.facebook.com/. All you need to do is change the “www”

part of the URL to “mbasic” so that it looks like this https:// mbasic. facebook.com/. 6. Copy the entire URL from Notepad and paste it into the address bar of your web browser and press the “Enter” key on your keyboard. You should see your video. 7. Click on the video once to start it playing, then right-click on it and click “Save video as” in the context menu. You will now be able to save the video on your computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I want to be able to highlight certain text in the reading pane of Outlook 2016 for Incoming and outgoing email. Example: when I save one of your weekly newsletters in its own sub-file. If I could, for example, highlight a sentence or paragraph that would quickly tell me why I chose to save said edition. Based upon my research to-date, I have yet to find the answer – be it from Microsoft or outside vendors. Grrr! Yes, I can highlight other things in a given email(s) but not from the body of the email itself. I can’t be the only person in the world who would like to do this – as if I were holding a real “Hi-Liter” above a piece of paper to highlight certain words, phrases or See COMPUTERS page 37...

~ News ~ ...COMPUTERS from page 36 paragraphs. Would you help? Please! Dave Dear Dave, Unfortunately, this is not a feature that is programmed into Outlook, or any other email program that I am aware of. The best work around would be to forward the email to yourself. Once you click the “Forward” button, you will be able to make changes and highlight text before you click “Send”. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My husband has a new HP computer with windows 10. He uses edge. Sometimes when he opens it up his favorite bar is missing. No one knows how this happens and it takes a while for it to come back. Do you know anything about this? Sue Dear Sue, While I can’t tell you what is happening to make the favor-
ites bar disappear, I can tell you how to quickly turn it back on. 1. Open Microsoft Edge. 2. Click on the, “More” button in the upper-right corner of the window, and click on “Settings” in the drop-down menu. 3. In the settings, find the section named either “Favorites” or “Favorites Bar”. If you have a favorites section, click on the button that says, “View favorites settings”. 4. Click the button under, “Show the favorites bar” to turn it on and the favorites bar should instantly appear. If the favorites bar is already turned on, try turning it off and then back on. I hope this helps keep your favorites bar in place. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. Ashley Breton has been the organizer of this textile drive since its inception. “This couldn’t have been accomplished without the support of our textile drop locations (local schools, the town hall, the superintendent’s office, Prime Storage, Matt’s Barbershop, and the Wells Transfer Station), the local papers printing our press releases, all of the volunteers that worked on the drive and, of course, the community who so generously donated their gently worn textiles,” said Breton who added, “It takes a village!” The Music Boosters would like to thank everyone in York County that had a part in this year’s drive.
