Medicine to Reverse Overdose Now At Hospital Apothecary YORK In a continued effort to curb the opioid epidemic in Southern York County, a medicine proven to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose is now available by request directly from a pharmacist at the York Hospital Apothecary in York. Through a standing order issued by the York Hospital Recovery Center’s Medications for Opioid Use Disorders (MOUD) Medical Director, Dr. Christine Munroe, pharmacists at York Hospital are now permitted to dispense by

request the narcotic blocker naloxone (Narcan®). A prescription from a doctor or other medical practitioner is not required. Naloxone is a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. It is an opioid antagonist which means that it attaches to opioid receptors and reverses and blocks the effects of other opioids. It can quickly restore normal breathing to a person if their breathing has slowed or stopped because of an overdose on fentanyl, heroin, or prescription opioid pain-

killers. However naloxone has no effect on someone who does not have opioids in their system. The temporary blocking effect allows time for professional medical attention to be sought. “Expansion of the availability and use of this medicine can greatly reduce drug overdose deaths and save lives,” said Dr. Munroe. “It is important for any family member, friend or other person in a position to help someone experiencing See DOSE page 20...

It’s estimated that this spend will support more than 750,000 new American jobs. Walmart’s Open Call is one way in which the company supports this commitment. It can be a tool of inclusion, or a barrier to attendance. When visitors do not have access, whether it’s because of a pandemic, a handicap, lack of transportation, lack of time, distance, or other issues, that means that the museum cannot reach its community members. and civic involvement.” Like many celebrations, the award ceremony was virtual, allowing those from far away to offer congratulations and support. A familiar face to York Parks & Recreation spoke on Robin’s behalf, the former director of 39 years, Michael Sullivan. Sullivan spoke of Robin’s 30+ year career, beginning as a camp counselor while in high school and then steadily taking on more responsibilities as her children grew up, from part-time special events coordinator, recreation program coordinator, director of the senior center, assistant director, to her current role as director of the department. Sullivan shared the following with the award ceremony attendees, “I’m proud of the work she is doing and I admire the woman she is. She is not only a parks-and-recreation professional, she is a bright, articulate administrator, and has done an extraordinary job during an extraordinary time. WELLS / OGUNQUIT How can we possibly thank all of the people who have worked tirelessly throughout this pandemic? Educators, first responders, grocery store workers, trades workers, medical professionals, the list goes on and on. These are the people who have not stopped working and for many – working many, many additional hours under tough circumstances – to keep us safe and continue on with everyday life. The Ogunquit and Wells Rotary Clubs collaborated to thank our community members who have given so much over the last year. The clubs jointly purchased a banner from Ocean Graphics in Wells to thank all of the frontline workers. The banner will hang for two weeks on Route 1 in Wells in front of the junior high school and for two weeks on Route 1 in Ogunquit. A special thank you goes

With the hope to bridge the gap between conservation and recreation in a new way for our town, the Meadow Woods Preserve will be a unique environment here in York County, but the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust (KCT) needs your help. Good job my friend.” Unaware of the award, Cogger shared that she was “quite surprised and humbled”, and in true Robin fashion, said the award “should really be a community award.” Cogger believes she’s “blessed to work in a community that welcomes parks and recreation, and they trust us.” As a director, Cogger oversees a diverse team with staff at multiple locations, from The Center for Active Living and Mount Agamenticus to Bog Road Fields Complex, and even some remotely. Her ability to bring the team together and create unity is nothing short of amazing. However, Cogger was quick to share that “it’s all about the team. What would my job be if it wasn’t for my team of skilled professionals who are dedicated and committed?” A true testament to Cogger’s work were the ceremony attendees excited to offer their support. In attendance there were members from town committees and boards, volunteer organizations, the entire York Parks & Recreation team, and family. Congratulations Robin on a well-deserved honor. ~ News ~ State of Civil Emergency Continues AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills recently extended the State of Civil Emergency through May 13. The Governor’s decision to extend the emergency is in line with nearly every other state in the nation which have ongoing emergency declarations, according to the National Governors Association. For example, the states of Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, New Mexico, South Carolina and Texas all extended their States of Civil Emergency this month. “We are in a race between vaccinations and variants,” said Governor Janet Mills. “With nearly half of all eligible Maine people having received at least one dose of a vaccine, we are

making progress, but we have got to keep our foot on the gas to get more people vaccinated, to keep people alive and healthy, and to get us back to normal sooner. With case counts increasing, and with spring vacation just around the corner for many, I ask all Maine people to keep doing the basic things that keep us safe, like wearing a mask, watching your distance, and avoiding large gatherings, particularly ones indoors.” A State of Civil Emergency allows Maine to deploy all available tools to respond to and contain COVID-19. This is Governor Mills’ fourteenth extension of the State of Civil Emergency. Under Maine law, Proclamations of See STATE page 21...

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ York Hospital Unveils Online Art Gallery

The first show at the hospital cafe showcases work by Cynthia Knowles of York. Watercolor of Perkins Cove.

YORK In conjunction with World Art Day on April 15, the Art Committee of York Hospital, comprised of members Cynthia Hosmer, Maryse Newton, Bernadine Speers and Judy Yandow), is pleased to announce the opening of an online art gallery at York Hospital. The Art Committee annually reviews proposals submitted by local artists and selects four finalists to display their artwork in the hospital café for the

coming year. While each artist’s work is typically seen by thousands, the café is currently closed to the public for in-house dining due to COVID-19 visiting restrictions. When the Art Committee and York Hospital leadership recognized that the community could no longer come to see the art, the idea of bringing the art to the community via a virtual gallery was born, and it has now come to fruition. The four artists selected for

this year include watercolorist Cynthia Knowles (April 15 to June 15), photographer Kevin Molloy (June 15 to August 15), architect and watercolorist Stephen Harby (August 15 to October 15), and pastel artist Caroline Kelley (October 15 to December 30). In addition to showcasing the work of these artists and supporting the sale of their art, the new art gallery will also focus attention on York Hospital’s COVID-19 Caring for All Fund. A portion of the proceeds from each piece sold will be donated to support this fund. Art Committee Chair Cynthia Hosmer states, “We are so pleased to promote these beautiful works of art to the public again – and to provide solace and inspiration to our frontline medical staff during the pandemic. York Hospital is a special place and an important part of our community, and we’re hopeful that the online gallery will help raise funds during this challenging time.” York Hospital’s Interim Chief Nursing Officer and former Director of Emergency and Surgical Services Charity Neal adds that she misses being able to gather with colleagues in the cafeteria. “I used to find it very relaxing to see the beautiful artwork when I grabbed a quick lunch,” Neal said. “The landscapes and images were calming and peaceful after spending a busy day in the emergency room.” Until the York Hospital cafeteria reopens to the public, you can view the artwork virtually 24/7 at www.yorkhospital.com/ online-art-gallery/ and enjoy a few moments of peace and calm from the convenience of home or wherever access to the internet exists.

It’s Maine Pottery Tour Time! STATEWIDE Springtime in Maine can mean daffodils or snow, and sometimes both, but the first weekend in May has meant the Maine Pottery Tour for nearly a decade. The 9th annual Maine Pottery Tour welcomes visitors on Saturday, May 1, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Sunday, May 2, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., to a self-guided tour of local potters in their studios. It’s a fun chance to meet the artists, peek in the kilns, see demonstrations, and shop for pottery and other handmade goods.

Nearly 50 pottery studios around the state are organized into three regions of approximately 15 studios, allowing several studios to be visited in a single outing. Participating studios in the southern Maine region include Homeport Pottery in Kennebunkport, Wendy Twitchell Porcelain in Kennebunkport, MEC Pottery in Cape Neddick, Southern Maine Clay Guild in Kittery, and Kat’s Katch Pottery in Lebanon. Hopefully this will help you get started. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, My computer reboots itself without warning 2-3 times a week. I’m not doing any one thing when this happens. It’s happened when I clicked a link in my browser, when I was simply reading something online, and when I was making a graphic. Other times too, I’m sure, but those are the instances I recall. One time recently it rebooted itself just a minute or two after I started it up. I don’t think it’s a maintenance update as I get warnings when it does those. I’ve searched

and searched for a fix, but to no avail. It seems to be a Windows 10 problem that affects many, but no one (that I could find) has a solution. Thank you for your wonderful column. I’ve been a fan for many years! Best, Dennis Dear Dennis, This is probably a hardware issue. A hard one to isolate though. It could be the power supply, or the RAM or the motherboard. What to do depends on the age of the computer, and how much money you want to put into finding an answer. Do you have your computer plugged into a good UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)? Sometimes the power can fluctuate just enough to cause your computer to restart, but not enough that you might notice the lights flicker or need to reset the clock on your microwave. A UPS would switch to battery quickly enough to fix the problem. If you are confident that it is not a power issue, bring it into your local computer repair shop for some diagnostics. They will probably reseat the RAM, run some hardware diagnostic software, and possibly even replace

Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, A friend purchased as a gift for me OE Classic and I like it but I cant seem to get both my address book and folders from Thunderbird to transfer to OE Classic. If you think you could help it would be so appreciated. I have Windows 10 and have tried so many things but nothing has been successful. Thank you for your time and help if can or can’t. Venna Dear Venna, I had not heard of OE Classic until I read your message and did a little bit of research. OE Classic does have an import function, but I don’t see Thunderbird listed as a program you can import from. It does look like you can probably transfer your address book by first exporting it from Thunderbird, then importing into OE Classic. They have directions listed at www.oeclassic.com/online-help-import. As for your email folders, OE Classic uses the .eml mail format so you would need to export your messages from Thunderbird to the .eml format, then you could import them into OE Classic. There is a guide at www.mailsdaddy.com/blogs/ how-to-export-thunderbirdemails-to-eml/. I can’t give you step by step directions because I don’t use or own OE Classic. Maine Veterans to Receive up to $1,400 STATEWIDE Congresswoman Chellie Pingree announced that many Mainers who receive veterans’ benefits could expect Economic Impact Payments of up to $1,400 to hit their bank accounts through the end of the month. Many Mainers have already received Economic Impact Payments as part of the American Rescue Plan. This latest round of payments applies specifically to veterans and their beneficiaries who receive Compensation and Pension (C&P) benefit payments and who don’t normally file a tax return. Most payments will be automatically deposited into bank accounts or loaded onto the Direct Express cards where veterans receive their benefits.

Those waiting on paper checks or debit cards through the mail should expect to receive their payments over the next several days. In most cases, these payments are automatic, and no action is necessary to receive them. Congresswoman Pingree encourages all Mainers to use the “Get My Payment” tool from www.irs.gov to check the status of their payments and make sure they receive the money they are owed. “We want to make sure that Maine veterans and their families get the money that is rightfully theirs. Help is here, and our veterans have the longawaited support they need to help them recover from the impact of COVID-19,” said Congresswoman Pingree.

Vets Can Apply as Aides-de-camp AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced that she is seeking applications for Maine’s Aidesde-camp positions, an advisory council of military veterans who advise the governor on policies impacting Maine veterans. “As someone who comes from a military family myself, I deeply appreciate the service and sacrifice of Maine veterans and their loved ones,” said Governor Janet Mills. “Maine has the largest percentage of veterans per capita in the nation, and these Aides-camp-positions will create an important line of communication between them and state government and will support our shared efforts to improve services and opportunities for veterans across Maine.

economy and community, include a resume and cover letter, three (3) references, two (2) professional and one (1) personal and proof of registration of the institution/school chosen to attend. Application deadline is Wednesday, April 28 by 4 p.m. The Review Committee will be comprised of Chamber Executive Director and representatives of the Chamber’s Board of Directors. The committee will review the essays and select finalists in each category for interviews. Finalists will be notified by email. Interviews will be held

in grades 8-12 with information and support in career sectors of interest to them. Maine’s career and technical education schools and Community College system are doing amazing work introducing students to programs such as public safety, building trades, electrical construction, and heavy equipment operations as well as other trade and technical careers. In addition, the University of Maine System is providing two and four-year degree programs in environmental protection, renewable energy, engineering, and other growing fields. These careers, for the most part, are considered high wage and high demand in Maine,” said Suzanne SenechalJandreau, conference planner for New Ventures Maine – a statewide community outreach program of the University of Maine at Augusta. Senechal-Jandreau adds, “Maine employers are looking for skilled tradeswomen and we want young women to

have access to information that can lead them to good paying and secure jobs in the future. It’s a win-win for students and the Maine economy.” The workshops are free, and open to girls in grades 8 through 12 who are exploring or considering employment in the featured career sectors. Funding for the virtual Totally Trades Career Week is provided by the Maine Department of Education/CTE and the Maine Department of Transportation. Additional support and in-kind contributions are provided by businesses and community partners. Individuals seeking more information on the virtual Totally Trades Career Week sessions, or interested in registering should contact Suzanne Senechal-Jandreau at 207768-9635 or email senechal@ maine.edu. Health & Fitness Locations for 2021 Drug Take-Back Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. Ahead of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day this Saturday, April 24, U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME) announced that the locations of the Maine collection sites can be found at https://takebackday.dea.gov/. “Unused prescription drugs that collect in our homes can fall into the wrong hands, creating unintended gateways to opioid addiction. Properly

disposing of unused drugs is one way we can each do our part to combat the opioid epidemic, particularly as Maine has seen a concerning increase in drug abuse during the pandemic,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “Maine is one of the top ten states that have disposed the most prescriptions through the DEA’s Drug TakeBack Program. We are confident that our state will continue to lead efforts to stop the misuse of unused drugs that pose a serious threat to our communities.”

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. In 2020, the collection sites began accepting vaping devices and associated substances. At a previous Take-Back Event in October 2020, federal, state, and local government entities took back more than 985,000 pounds of unused, expired, or unwanted drugs at more than 4,500 locations across the United States. Over the course of the program, more than 14.6 million pounds of prescription drugs have been safely collected across the country, including more than 450,000 pounds of medication in Maine alone.

Bill to Protect Seniors from Elder Abuse Signed into Law WASHINGTON, D.C. Approximately one in 10 seniors aged 60 and older have experienced some form of elder abuse. For people with Alzheimer’s and related dementias, the prevalence is much higher, with some estimates putting it at just over 50 percent. Legislation authored by Senators Susan Collins (RME), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) to protect seniors with dementia from harm and exploitation has been signed into law. The Promoting Alzheimer’s Awareness to Prevent Elder Abuse Act will ensure that the Department of Justice’s elder abuse training materials take into account individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The bipartisan bill passed Congress unanimously earlier this month. “As Chairman of the Senate Aging Committee, one of my top priorities is protecting our seniors against abuse,” said Senator Collins, a founder and co-chair of the Congressional Task Force on Alzheimer’s Disease. “During the pandemic, there may be increased risk for elder abuse, including elder financial exploitation. This law I co-authored with Senators Menendez and Grassley will help to ensure that the frontline professionals who are leading the charge against elder abuse have the training needed to respond to cases where the victim or a witness has Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.” “We ought to do all we can to ensure the Justice Department is well-prepared to respond to crimes involving Alzheimer’s patients and folks with other forms of dementia. These cases can be particularly challenging at each stage, from investigation to prosecution. This legislation will strengthen our collective response to these crimes, which are unfortunately all too common. I’m glad, with the bill now signed into law, that the government can now more effectively handle and address these problems,” Senator Grassley said. Specifically, the Promoting Alzheimer’s Awareness to Prevent Elder AbuseAct will: Require that the National Elder Justice Coordinator take into account people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias when creating or compiling

elder abuse training materials; Instruct DOJ to consult with stakeholders, as appropriate, in developing these materials and to review and update existing materials; Include information in DOJ’s annual report about where to access the publicly available training materials. The law builds on the Elder Abuse Prevention and Prosecution Act, which became law in October 2017 and required DOJ to create training materials to help criminal justice, health care, and social services personnel assess and respond to elder abuse cases. It also aligns with the latest recommendations from the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease, which include disseminating information on abuse of those with dementia and educating law enforcement about interacting with these individuals.

Kenneth H. Doty, Sr., 84 YORK – Kenneth H. Doty, Sr., age 84, went home to be with His Lord and Savior on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on February 25, 1937 at York Hospital, the eldest son of the late Charles H. and Elizabeth (Drew) Doty. Ken attended York schools, graduating in 1957. Ken married his sweetheart Betty A. (Clark) Doty from Northern Maine on August 5, 1962, who came down for the summer and stayed. They would have been married 59 years this year. At an early age Ken worked on the family farm, then started working at several local garages. He worked for Carl Snow Mobil, Dave Weeks Sunoco, and Howard Gunnison’s Service Station in Kittery. For the last 25 years he worked for the York School Department at Village Elementary School and Coastal Ridge Elementary, advancing from custodian to facility manager. Ken was a member and deacon at the Cape Neddick Baptist Church and served 25 years as a volunteer firefighter at the York Village Fire Department. Ken had many things he enjoyed in life – but most of all, faith and family and being a mentor for a Coastal Ridge student. He was an avid Boston Celtics and Boston Red Sox fan. He enjoyed the beauty of the ocean. He loved to go down in the early mornings to Long

Sands Beach and sit with his newspaper, and be by the ocean. Survivors include his two children Wanda (Doty) Morris and Kenneth H. Doty, Jr. with daughter-in-law Laura; two grandchildren, Stephanie A. (Morris) Martin and Brandon R. Morris with future daughterin-law Fa Fa; six great-grandchildren, Olivia, Dawson and Drew Martin, Cody, Haley and Natalie Morris; sister Barbara (Doty) Fernald; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents; sisters Shirley and Sheila Fernald; and brother Robert. Graveside services were held privately. Ruth E. Boston, 89 SOUTH BERWICK – Ruth E. Boston, age 89, passed away at home on April 12, 2021 after a brief period of failing health. She was born in Brockton, MA, on December 21, 1931. She was a resident of South Berwick for most of her life where she was active in the community and on several town boards. In 1952, she was the first married graduate of Berwick Academy where she was class agent, and eventually a member of the alumni board. Ruth worked at the South Berwick shoe shop and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where she retired after 28 years as an executive secretary (donating 13 gallons of blood over the years!).

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Local Agents Help Take The Bite Out of Dog-Related Injuries

STATEWIDE With an estimated 90 million dogs living in U.S. households, accidents are bound to happen. Most dogs will never bite, but it is important to remember that any dog can bite regardless of breed or type. In 2020, State Farm paid $157 million as a result of 3,186 dog bite and injury claims. Over the past decade, State Farm paid more than $1.1 billion for dog-related injury claims.

Maine was ranked #39 in 2020 in number of State Farm dog bite claims with an average pay out of $24,000 per claim. This is a decline from the state’s #45 ranking for 2019. The top three states for 2020 dog bite claims are California, Illinois, and Ohio, respectively. The highest month for the number of claims and amount paid for those claims was at the start of the COVID-19 lockdown. In March 2020, State Farm paid

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS -

Lennie arrived at our Cattail Farmhouse seeking friendship, comfy accommodations, yummy meals, and a soft bed. His previous caregiver could no longer keep him because their new housing did not allow cats. Not allow cats? Yikes! That seems archaic to us. However it does happen and sadly many kitties are displaced due that outdated rule. Millions of people have cats, including many lonely older people who feel unloved. The last thing a lonely senior needs is to have their best friend taken away from them when they need them the most. Lennie was one of the lucky ones. He landed at Safe Haven’s Cattail Farmhouse, where the resident kitties enjoy the comforts of living in a charming antique farmhouse, with lots of sunshine, loving volunteers, and all the comforts a kitty could wish for. Lennie was aptly pegged as a Love Bug by our farmhouse team. This lovely 2-year-old doesn’t just purr when petted, he practically turns himself inside out to show you how much he treasures your affections. He even knows his name, runs to greet you, and hops into your lap for love. Lennie’s grey-and-white coat is very handsome, and his calm, loving personality makes him perfect for anyone. He would be fine as an only cat. That way he’ll get all your atSafe Haven Humane Society 1420 Post Road / 1784 Post Road Wells, ME 04090

tention. But with his gregarious, wonderful personality, he would get along well with other friendly kitties. Just make sure you don’t get stingy with the affection – He deserves it all! Lennie is all ready for adoption. He’s healthy, neutered, and up-to-date on his vaccinations. To learn more about Lennie, call Nancy, our Cattail Farmhouse manager at 207-229-7094. Our Thrift Vintage Antique shop at 1784 Post Road is now looking for architectural pieces, outdoor gardening benches, pots, trellises, watering cans, shutters, old windows, outdoor chairs, unusual outdoor pieces, old cupboards, tables, vintage anything, including Christmas and Halloween, toys, any items that are current and useful or lovely. Donations are accepted 12-3 p.m. Saturdays. If you have large items you cannot bring on Saturdays, call Joyce at 207-2298314. over $19 million dollars for 320 injury claims. Dogs were picking up on their owners’ stress and increased activity in the home, such as children being home from school and adults working from home, resulting in negative behavior because of anxiety. “Children make up more than 50% of all dog bite victims and the highest risk group in children are ages 5-9 years old,” says Wells State Farm Agent Nancy Hafford. “The elderly and home service people, like mail carriers, are also high on the list of frequent dog bite victims. Being bitten or attacked by a dog can leave physical and emotional scars. For the dog, it can be a death sentence.” State Farm claim numbers include dog bites as well as dog-related injuries. This can involve injuries resulting from a dog jumping on a person and knocking a person down or off a bicycle. A person can also be injured because they were afraid of the possibility of a dog attacking, such as falling down stairs while backing away. State Farm is one of the few insurance companies in the country that does not refuse insurance based on the breed of dog someone owns. “We recognize that,

KENNEBUNK Hiya friends! My name is Larry I can’t believe I’m writing to you today; it’s like a dream come true! It’s so exciting to think my perfect people are out there somewhere just waiting to find me and I’m just sitting here all wiggly-and-waggy waiting for that to happen. I love hiking and walking and running on the beach, as well as munching on some good food, and getting my belly rubbed. However, my absolute favorite thing in the whole world is squeaky toys! Well, not just squeaky toys but, toys in general – I’ve never met a toy I didn’t like and, odds are, I’ll have a toy in my mouth when you come to see me. I have to be honest with

under the right circumstances, any dog might bite,” says Kennebunk State Farm Agent Tracey Bricker. “That is why we encourage people to be responsible pet owners and educate the public, especially children, on how to safely approach a dog.” Hafford and Bricker offer several tips to help prevent dog bites: Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog, even if it is a family pet. Children are often bitten by dogs in their own household; Make sure your pet is socialized so he feels at ease around people and other animals; Walk and exercise your dog on a leash to keep him healthy and provide mental stimulation; Regular veterinary visits are essential to regulating the health of your dog. A sick or injured dog is more likely to bite; Be alert. If someone approaches you and your dog, caution them to wait before petting the dog. Give your pet time to be comfortable with the stranger; Understand and respond to changes in your dogs’ body language. Look at the eyes, ears, tail, and posture to know when your dog may be happy, fearful, or angry; Spay or neuter. This procedure can help reduce your dog’s aggressive behaviors.

Homeowners and renters should talk to their insurance agents about proper coverages. Additional resources about responsible pet ownership can be found at www.statefarm.com.

Online ATV Registration STATEWIDE ATV owners can now use an online service to register ATVs with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IF&W). Following payment, owners will receive a temporary registration form to print for immediate use. Official registration and stickers will arrive at the shipping address specified within 30 business days. ATV registrations are valid from July 1 through June 30. ATV registrations submitted on or before April 30 will expire on June 30 of the current year. ATV registrations submitted on or after May 1 will expire on June 30 of the following year. Businesses that wish to renew their ATV or snowmobile cannot use the online system and must renew at the town office. Those who can use this service include Maine residents renewing a registration, and non-residents who may do both renewal and new registrations online. However, Maine residents with new registrations must be done through

a registration agent or the IF&W main office in Augusta. Registration fees are $46 resident, $76 non-resident for 7 days, $91 non-resident for the full season. Required documentation includes information on the registered owner and vehicle. A MasterCard or Visa credit/debit card and a printer to print a copy of the temporary registration, will be needed as well. Wells Boys Varsity Lacrosse Bounces Back to First Win By William Griffith, High School Sports Contributor, and Ryan Bingham WELLS On April 15, the Wells High School Varsity Lacrosse team came back from their scrimmage loss to succeed in their first official game of the season, against Biddeford. The

Warriors started down 2-0 but won 7-4 by the end. With the COVID-19 protocols in place, spectators, coaches, and players wore masks in order to attend in person. Player Colton Harding said, “The game went well. We came out slow but picked it up in the end.”

Podolec Named to Track & Field

...AIR from page 16

BERWICK The Assumption University Department of Athletics in Worcester, MA, has announced that Owen Podolec of Berwick has been named to the 2021 Track & Field team. The men’s team returned to competition in April after the 2020 spring season was cancelled due to the pandemic. The Hounds took home third place at the Merrimack Invitational, in which they competed against Division I schools Merrimack College, UMass Lowell, and Bryant University. On March 11, Assumption announced the full return to competition for all spring sports programs with a number of safety protocols in place, including regular COVID-19 testing for student-athletes. Resuming participation in NE10 competition this spring is contingent upon student-athletes’ compliance with all COVID-19 health and safety protocols put in place.

Clean Air Act’s Mercury and Air Toxics Standards have done double duty in protecting health: not only have they reduced mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants by nearly 90%, but they’ve also cleaned up dangerous particle pollution at the same time. Reducing sick days: By reducing some of the most common, widespread air pollutants, the Clean Air Act was projected to prevent 13 million lost workdays and 3.2 million lost school days in 2020. Cleaner Air and a Growing Economy: Cleaning up the air is cost-effective for our nation. Since 1970, the six most common pollutants have been cut 77% while at the same time the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has grown 285%. Cleaning Up Ozone: Ground-level ozone, a widespread type of air pollution, is dangerous to human health. Beyond human health, ozone air pollution also damages crops. Emissions cleanup under the Clean Air Act has reduced ozone levels by 25% since 1990.

Harding said he is unsure what is next for them. “It seems the boys’ varsity team is improving with constant practice and gaining chemistry which can improve a team from losing 0-14 [the scrimmage with Berwick Academy] to winning 7-4. We’ll see if the team can turn one win into a win streak!”

Laying the groundwork for a safe climate: The law’s tools provide a pathway for dramatically reducing the greenhouse gases that cause climate change. Saving lives: EPA projected that in 2020, the Clean Air Act would prevent more than 230,000 early deaths every single year by ensuring cleaner air quality. Hannaford Expands ‘Fuel Kids At School’ Pantry Initiative SOUTHERN MAINE Hannaford Supermarkets announced an expansion of its ‘Fuel Kids at School’ pantry initiative to Maine’s community colleges with a donation of $35,000 to establish and expand pantries at all seven community college campuses. The donation will be used for startup and buildout of pantry and storage spaces as well as food costs. The York County Community College in Wells received $2,000 to help stock their food pantry. Based on research conduct-

ed with Preble Street in Portland, system officials estimate that at least 40% of students enrolled at the colleges are food insecure. “This generous donation not only helps keep these food pantries stocked, it provides for freezers and refrigerators that will allow these food pantries to provide a range of food options for years to come,” said Maine Community College System President David Daigler. “Our students can’t learn if they’re hungry. These food pantries, many of them student-run, are a

The colleges will work directly with Good Shepherd Food Bank on preparatory and operational logistics, including food safety training and inspections and food purchases. “By removing barriers and bringing food right to where people already are and through folks they already trust is such a win-win,” said Shannon Coffin, Vice President of Community Partnerships at Good Shepherd Food Bank. The donation is a part of Hannaford’s $1 million commitment to ‘Fuel Kids at School’ pantry initiative launched in November 2019 to establish 90 school food pantries across the northeast, including 30 in Maine. Since then, all 30 schoolbased food pantries have been established at Head Start preschools across the state in partnership with Good Shepherd Food Bank.
