Love and Loss: Conference on Coping with Grief By Timothy Gillis KENNEBUNK, YORK & SCARBOROUGH Kate Braestrup, national bestselling author and chaplain with the Maine Warden Service, will be the 8th annual Thresholds Conference keynote speaker for Making Space for Grief in Our Lives, sponsored by Hospice of Southern Maine. As part of the conference, which is on Wednesday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hannaford Hall, USM Portland Campus, HSM will host three post-conference forums in Ken-

nebunk, Scarborough, and York. These forums are free and open to the public, and include a short video of Conference highlights, a light meal, and an information session on grief. The speaker has first-hand experience with love and loss and shares her experiences of how to handle it. Braestrup’s first husband, Maine State Trooper Drew Griffith, was killed in the line of duty, leaving her a widow with four young children. As it happened, Drew had spent the last year of his life planning to become
a Unitarian Universalist minister. This plan was naturally discussed with his wife, and inspired Kate to choose ministry as her own vocation after his death. Since 2001, she has served as chaplain to the Maine Warden Service, joining the wardens as they search for those who have lost their way, and offering comfort to those who wait for loved ones to be rescued, or their bodies to be recovered. “One of the themes that I find both helpful and fruitful is that this is something that everyone will have to do,” said Braestrup

discovered African-American gospel music and recognized the “tremendous similarities” between the two genres. And now, 62 years later, Curtis is an avid historian who has studied and documented those similarities and enjoys sharing his findings, along with vintage concert clips, to others in a lively presentation he calls “The Righteous Roots of Rock & Roll.” South Coast Senior College at York County Community College proudly brings Curtis to Wells to present his informative, music-filled talk as part of its lecture series on Monday, April 30 at 10 a.m.
John Curtis “Most people in Maine haven’t heard black gospel music,” he said, during an interview last
week. “That was true for me. I was never exposed to it until I was 18.” During the 1950s, Curtis said, as rock ‘n roll became popularized in the U.S., “few people outside the African-American community realized that this ‘new’ music was largely inspired by and modeled after black gospel music and its practitioners.” While artists like Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Clara Ward and Mahalia Jackson, “had performed to wide acclaim in the black community for decades, the fact that America was rigidly segregated at the time kept the original music from reaching a larger audience,” he explained.

In addition to the local conference, she is also headed to Virginia next week to train members of the Richmond Police Department this model of dealing with grieving families. “From my experience, my own losses, we know how to do it. This is a skill, an ability that we have. It makes sense that we have it. There’s never been a time when we didn’t have to deal with loss. It’s something that’s already in us, already there. Curtis’s fascination in the similarities between early rock and black gospel music were enhanced over several decades he spent away from Maine, working as a computer programmer in New York City. “I gravitated to African-American music,” he said. “I went to numerous James Brown concerts at the Apollo Theatre in New York. Brown always said his music came from church music. I also traveled to Norfolk, Virginia to attend gospel concerts at African-American churches,” he said. Returning to Surry, near Ellsworth, in 2000, he became the town’s historian and also set out to document his musical passion. See CURTIS page 10...
Legislature Honors Former First Lady’s Legacy STATEWIDE One day after First Lady Barbara Bush passed away at her home in Texas, the Maine Legislature voted to create a license plate that helps fund the hospital that bears her name. Governor Paul LePage signed LD 1685, An Act To Create The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital Registration Plate, on Thursday afternoon. “The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital license plate is the culmination of years of work from thousands of Mainers who have provided their support, their
advocacy and their signatures. Ensuring the long-term support for the health and well-being of Maine’s children is part of Mrs. Bush’s legacy, so it is fitting that the state Legislature would take this important step. We salute each member and thank them for their support,” said Rich Petersen, president and CEO of Maine Medical Center, which houses the children’s hospital. DAR Announces Good Citizens
WELLS, KITTERY & YORK The Old York Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, announced the winners of the Good Citizen Award for 2018: Caitlin Pelkey of Traip Academy, Estelle Reardon of Wells High School, and Lauren Schoff of York High School, Reardon is also this year’s state winner and will be honored at the Daughters of the American Revolution Annual Confer-
ence in Augusta on April 28. She has also been named the Northeastern Region Winner. The purpose of the Good Citizen Award is to recognize and reward senior high school students who have demonstrated outstanding qualities of scholarship, leadership, patriotism, dependability and service. Reardon talked about the inspirations for her success. “Throughout my life I have been fortunate to receive fierce

support from both my parents and my extended family when it comes to pursuing my goals. I have also had several teachers who have pushed me to achieve my full potential. However, I believe the person to whom I owe the most gratitude is myself. My success is largely something I crafted independently from my own ambition, drive, and discipline. For the next few years, she plans to start college at the University of Chicago where she

intends to study creative writing and international relations. At some point, she hopes to continue on to law school. Schoff wanted to thank her teachers for always challenging and pushing her to be so successful. “I also would like to thank my friends for supporting me and laughing at my bad jokes. Most importantly I would like to thank my family for teaching me how to work hard, be respectful, and treat others the way I would like to be treated, she said. “They are such positive role models and I can’t thank them enough for everything they do for me. In the next few years, she will be working and probably taking a wide variety of classes at a local community college. “Since I am not quite sure what I want to study, I’m going to try to figure out my interests and not go to a four-year college
right away just because it is what most kids do, she said. “It’s so expensive, I want to make sure I spend my money wisely toward an education for something I think would be a great career in the future. I am also planning on visiting my two friends in Germany and really hope that somewhere along the way I will figure out something that I would love to do for the rest of my life. No matter what I end up doing these past few years, I just hope I can maintain my positive attitude and be happy with wherever I am and whatever I’m doing. Pelkey is a senior at Robert W. Traip Academy in Kittery. She has chosen to take many honors and advanced courses since 9th grade. And she has not slacked off in her senior year. On the contrary, she is enrolled See DAR page 5...

Unplug for Screen-Free Week
WELLS Wells Elementary School students and their families are being encouraged to shut off all electronic “screens” which means avoiding television, game systems, tablets, phone apps, computers, etc. for one week beginning April 30. The goal is for them to rediscover other activities in which to participate. Screen Free Week is a nation-
al effort with origins dating back to the mid-1990s. “From April 30 through May 6, children, families, entire schools, and communities will rediscover the joys of life beyond the screen,” reads a statement from screenfreeweek.org. “Plan to unplug from digital entertainment and spend all that free time playing, reading, daydreaming, creating, exploring, and connecting with family and friends.”
This event is facilitated at WES by Kim Richard and Marty Cryer. Both school staff members are encouraging not only their students, but their families and other community members to join the effort to avoid television and other electronic device
screens for a week or more. To help make this effort a success, many activities are planned at the school including “Read Alouds” (teachers reading with students), a visit from a 5-21-0 representative on April 30 and a “Tough Warrior Fun Run” for
families of students on Sunday, May 6. The 5-2-1-0 program seeks to improve the lifestyle and health of students and their families by encouraging good nutrition, exercise and limiting recreational screen time to “2” hours or less daily.
the woods, and I respond to the wardens who have had vicarious grief and even in their own lives.” She said doctors and nurses are getting better at talking about grief. “I’m really impressed at how many hospitals have E.R. chaplains. They will be there with the family when things are looking pretty bad.” When her grandson was born, there was a catastrophic cord accident. The cord ruptured; the baby lived for five days. “It was awful, in terms of the care provided and the willingness to allow the family to be with the body,” she said. “In hospitals, it’s become a lot better.” When doctors lose a patient, it’s like failing for them, she said. “Doctors are like law enforcement officers in that they want to fix things. In law enforcement, once we’re talking about the recovery of a body instead of a search, we have to protect the clues, etc. With medical (workers), they have to figure out how to work with families in dealing with death.” Braestrup has been working with new recruits for the last five years at the basic law enforcement
academy all divisions enter. “If someone drowns, while dive team is doing recovery with the body, my question is when does the family get to have the body back,” she said. “That’s important in itself. For us it may be a technical problem, we may need to call the medical examiner. It’s a tragedy for family. They need to be able to make choices and have control in this situation. My hope is the chaplain provides an interface between them and the people in uniform.” In addition to Braestrup’s keynote presentation, Daryl Cady, the CEO of Hospice of Southern Maine, and Carol Schoneberg, the bereavement services manager of Hospice of Southern Maine, will discuss grief in the workplace, supporting employees, and bereavement leave policies. The conference will conclude with a “fireside chat” with community members who have experienced a loss, from loss of a parent or mate, to loss as a result of suicide and overdose. For more information and to register for Thresholds Community Forums, visit www.hospiceofsouthernmaine.org.
...GRIEF from page 1 dence is reasonable, not a madeup thing, whether we’re thinking about own potential losses or supporting others through theirs. Braestrup’s work for the Maine Warden Service recently became a full-time position, but for her it always was. “My primary identity is in the work, and has been forever,” she said. “I get to work with game wardens. I see it as a duo-chaplaincy. I respond with wardens to people who have had something bad happen to them in ...LITERARY from page 3 grade level (with the exception of Grade 12) will receive $100. Second place winners will receive $50 and third place winners will receive $25. Honorable mentions will receive $10 gift certificates to the Steakhouse in Wells. The Literary Achievement Awards contest was established in 1986. The program is sponsored by the Wells-Ogunquit CSD, the Rotary Clubs of Wells and Ogunquit, and the Steakhouse in Wells.

Within five years of being made available statewide, the plate is projected to raise more than $200,000 each year to enhance patient care at Maine’s only children’s hospital. Kim and Joe Westrich of Wiscasset began the campaign for the BBCH specialty license plate nearly three years ago as a
way to give back to the hospital that did so much for their family. Their daughter, Madison, was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 2 years old. She was treated at BBCH and is now a healthy 12-year-old. The Westrich family’s goal is to create a stable funding source for generations to come. “Former first lady Barbara

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, I want to uninstall ClearScreen Player from my computer. When I hit uninstall a message comes up “Do you want this app to make changes to your device.” Should I hit yes or no? I am afraid to hit yes because it may take over my computer. What should I hit, yes or no? Allan Dear Allan, This is just a standard message you will see when trying to run a program that makes changes to your system. And, uninstalling a program is making some pretty big changes. So, even though it sounds intimidating, it is safe to select, “Yes” when you are uninstalling a program and the dialog box appears asking if you want to allow the app to make changes to your device. You are just giving it permission to remove the application. Once you have uninstalled the program, make sure you shut down and restart your computer. This will finish the removal of the program you are uninstalling. Elizabeth

I have previously used Picasa with success but since I got a new computer I am not able to do this. I want to print pictures so that I can make a collage. Any suggestions of a program that is easy for someone who is not good with computers? I faithfully read your newsletter every time I get it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Juanita in Iowa Dear Juanita, Windows 10 includes a built in function for importing photos from your camera or phone. Just follow these directions: 1. Insert your camera card, or usb cable. If using the camera connected by a cable, make sure the camera is turned on. 2. Once your device is connected, open File Explorer and click on “This PC” in the left column. You should see your camera or camera card listed under “Devices and Drives”. 3. Right-click on your camera or card, then click on “Import pictures and videos” in the context menu that appears. 4. The “Import pictures and videos” wizard will begin. Follow the prompts to select your
pictures, then click the “Import” button to begin the process of importing. When your pictures have been imported, you will be able to see them on your computer using File Explorer. You can then view and print them using File Explorer or another photos app. I like to use the free program, Irfanview to make changes to my photos, but it is not the best for printing. You might want to go to www. ninite.com and look at the available imaging apps there. Print. net has some good printing options. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do I know what my computer is named? When I log into my Microsoft account, I see several computers listed, but I am only using two computers, a desktop and a laptop. I can remove the computers I don’t use any more, but I can’t tell from the names which ones are old and which are new. Can you help? Curtis draws from these resources, plus his own extensive collection of biographies on gospel singers, for his talk. It is divided into two parts—“The Godmothers of Rock & Roll” and “The Fore-Fathers of Rock and Soul.” There will be a 30minute break between the two talks at YCCC on Monday. Curtis’ video includes “names” like Ray Charles, James Brown and Marvin Gaye, plus lesser-known, but highly respected gospel singers like the Pilgrim Jubilee Singers, The Mighty Clouds of Joy and Solomon Burke. The talk’s timing couldn’t be better, he noted, since Sister Rosetta Tharpe is being inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland this month for her early influence on rock ‘n roll. “She directly influenced Chuck Berry, who played the same guitar and had the same playing style she did,” said Curtis, who loves traveling throughout the state to share this slice of Americana. “It’s a labor of love for me,” Curtis concluded. “I am an historian and sharing America’s musical history is an important part of our national history.” Monday’s talk runs 10 to 11:30 a.m. followed by a half-hour break. KITTERY Tom Clark hits town with a new show called “Cinco-DeMaine-O,” starring his Maine comic character “C.L. Thomas.” This marks his third trip to the Star Theatre but this show is a new and improved version thanks to his new gig at PPMTV in Portsmouth. “I’m really excited about this collaboration with PPMTV,” said Clark, who lives in Kittery with his wife and daughter. “I self- produced some three-four minute segments out of my basement years ago that I showed PPMTV ‘s executive director
Bill Humphries. He agreed their studio could reshoot them in a more professional, three camera shoot with better music and lighting. With Bill’s reputation as a legendary Seacoast actor, I felt honored having him in charge as director and editor!”. Clark now has nine episodes that he turned into one 30-minute show. Season Two started with new episodes added weekly. For those who haven’t seen the comic character, Clark says, “C.L. is an old Mainer—the kind you might have seen sitting around the wood stove in
National Comic at Jonathan’s OGUNQUIT Nick Di Paolo, feature performer on The Comedy Central Roasts, The Tonight Show and Louis CK’s “Louie” brings his renowned stand-up comedy Jonathan’s Restaurant. Di Paolo’s brutally honest performances remind us of what great stand up should be— funny, socially relevant and a little bit reckless. While 95 percent of stand-up comedians are liberal, Di Paolo leans the other way and is unafraid and unapologetic. His strong political opinions and razor wit make him a perfect fit for talk radio, where he
has his own show, and in performances on The Tonight Show, Late Night with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Conan O’ Brien. He was twice nominated for an Emmy for his writing on HBO’s The Chris Rock Show. He has also had three half hour standup specials on Comedy Central, a Showtime Special “Raw Nerve,” a self

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Pulitzer Poet at Art Association KITTERY Poet Charles Simic will be the featured guest in the Kittery Art Association’s annual Mangion Memorial Poetry Celebration, on Saturday, May 5, beginning with a public interview and craft talk with the poet from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the reading, reception, and book signing beginning at 7 p.m. The talk and reading at the Kittery Art Association honor the memory of beloved KAA member and vol-
unteer Bob Mangion, founding member of KAA’s First Tuesday Poets, and core member of the decade-long music Series. Simic’s prize-winning books will be available for sale and signing during the evening reception. This following interview with Charles Simic is from October 19, 2013. Simic, 75, is a Serbian-American poet and was co-poetry editor of the Paris Review. Since 1967, he has published 20 books of his own
poetry, seven books of essays, a memoir, and numerous of books of translations of French, Serbian, Croatian, Macedonian, and Slovenian poetry. He has won numerous awards for his poetry, among them the Pulitzer Prize, the Wallace Stevens Award, the Robert Frost Medal, and a MacArthur Fellowship. In 2007–2008, Simic served as the U.S. Poet Laureate. He is a professor emeritus of English who still teaches part time at the University of New Hampshire. The interview was conducted by
Timothy Gillis. TG: You’ve been teaching at UNH for more than 30 years. How have college students changed over that time? CS: Students were better educated. They read more in high school. They read more in middle school. We read Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare and lots of stuff like that. Now, there’s none of that. Nothing. Unless, on their own, you know, or somehow they just love to read and got into books. It isn’t just literature they don’t know.
There are lots of things they don’t know. They don’t know history. They don’t know the See SIMIC page 36...

Drug Tack-Back Day NATIONWIDE National Drug TakeBack Day is Saturday, April 28. It’s an unfortunate fact that unused or expired prescription medications can be a public safety issue. Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as
dangerous as other street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision. Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold. Take back programs like National Drug Take Back Day,
are a safe and anonymous way to dispose of old drugs, and you can participate in Kittery. Unused or expired drugs can be brought to the Kittery Police Department from 10 to 2 p.m. on April 28. For more information, or other local resources and collection sites, visit www.deatakeback.com.

Wildfire Community Preparedness Day NATIONWIDE Wildfires are causing more damage to homes and businesses each year, not only in California but in states as different as Tennessee, Montana and Florida. The National Fire Protection Association and State Farm are helping communities take steps toward safety with their fifth annual national Wildfire Community Preparedness Day event on May 5. Wildfire Community Preparedness Day is a reminder that there are many steps communities can take to be prepared for wildfire and an opportunity for residents to participate in wildfire safety activities. There is still time to prepare to take action with regard to wildfire safety and NFPA and State Farm encourage people to get involved by planning a project and participating on May 5. Recent wildfire events make the need for Preparedness Day more important than ever before. Last October, more than 40 people lost their lives
in a rash of Northern California wildfires that burned more than 245,000 acres. In December, wildfires near Los Angeles forced more than 230,000 people to evacuate their homes. Several other states that experienced large fires in 2017, including Idaho, Oregon, Montana, and Utah, have put the U.S. on pace to exceed the average acreage burned annually over the past 10 years. “Since NFPA and State Farm first partnered together on Preparedness Day, the number of projects has grown tremendously. We are pleased to provide 150 communities with $500 each to fund their wildfire risk reduction activities on May 5,” said Vickie Hodges, P&C underwriting analyst, State Farm. For more information about national Wildfire Community Preparedness Day including resources, videos, and tip sheets, and to see the list of winning projects and their locations, please visit www.wildfireprepday.org.

YORK COUNTY Dr. Akhil Sastry, orthopaedic surgeon and provider at Atlantic Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, will speak at Dinner with the Doctor, a lecture event hosted by York Hospital on Thursday, May 3, at the Sable Oaks Marriott in South Portland. An expert on robotic-assisted knee replacements, Sastry will discuss innovations in knee replacement surgery, including how the use of robotics allows for greater precision and how that benefits the patient. He has been a pioneer in the field, having performed the first MAKO robotic-assisted knee replacement in Maine and New Hampshire, as well as the first to perform a
direct anterior hip replacement surgery. Sastry leads training programs throughout the country to train other orthopaedic surgeons in this cutting-edge technology, which has benefited more than 500 patients from Atlantic Orthopaedics alone. York Hospital is the first and only hospital to offer comprehensive, robotic-assisted surgery for knee arthritis in the state of Maine. Dinner with the Doctor is free and open to the public; however, reservations are required. To register, contact York Hospital at 207-351-2385 or email info@yorkhospital. com. Light fare and refreshments will be provided. The event begins at 6 p.m.

Health & Fitness York County’s Air at Risk STATEWIDE The American Lung Association’s 2018 “State of the Air report found across the board improvements in counties in Maine. York County received a D grade for high ozone days. For the first time in three years, no Maine counties received failing grades for ozone. This is in spite of a trend seen across the nation of higher ozone pollution levels. “The 2018 ‘State of the Air’ report finds that Maine has taken some big leaps this year, with significantly less ozone than in years past, said Jeff Seyler, chief division officer of the American Lung Association. The trends reflect the ongoing challenges to reduce each pollutant in the changing political and outdoor climate. “It’s important to remember that it only takes one bad air day to land a child with
asthma, or an elderly person in the emergency room. We can and should do more to save lives, said Lance Boucher, director of Policy in Maine for the American Lung Association. Each year the “State of the Air provides a report card on the two most widespread outdoor air pollutants, ozone pollution, also known as smog, and particle pollution, also called soot. The report analyzes particle pollution in two ways: through average annual particle pollution levels and short-term spikes in particle pollution. Both ozone and particle pollution are dangerous to public health and can increase the risk of premature death and other serious health effects such as lung cancer, asthma attacks, cardiovascular damage, and developmental and reproductive harm. Ozone Pollution Compared to
the
report, Maine experienced fewer unhealthy days of high ozone in this year’s report. In fact, Bangor, Maine ranked as one of the cleanest cities for ozone, with no unhealthy days, while six counties showed improved grades, signaling less unhealthy days from this dangerous pollutant. “Ozone especially harms children, older adults and those with asthma and other lung diseases, said Boucher “When older adults or children with asthma breathe ozone-polluted air, too often they end up in the doctor’s office, the hospital or the emergency room. Ozone can even shorten life itself. This report documents how warmer temperatures brought by climate change make ozone more likely to form and harder
to clean up. This year’s report showed that ozone levels increased in most cities nationwide, in large part due to warmer temperatures in 2016, the second hottest year on record in the U.S. Over the past decades, ozone pollution has decreased nationwide because the nation has cleaned up major sources of the emissions that create ozone, especially coal-fired power plants and vehicles. Particle Pollution The 2018 report also found year-round particle pollution levels remained in line with national standards. Nationwide, the best progress in this year’s report came in reducing yearround levels of particle pollution. “Particle pollution is made of soot or tiny particles that come

from coal-fired power plants, diesel emissions, wildfires and wood-burning devices. These particles are so small that they can lodge deep in the lungs and trigger asthma attacks, heart attacks and strokes, and can even be lethal, said Boucher. “Year-round particle pollution levels have dropped thanks to the cleanup of coal-fired power plants and the retirement of old, dirty diesel engines. “State of the Air 2018 also tracked short-term spikes in particle pollution, as these can be extremely dangerous and even lethal. BUSINESS & FINANCE Bill to Help Poverty-Stricken Becomes Law
STATEWIDE An Act to Reduce Child Poverty by Leveraging Investments in Families for Tomorrow, or LIFT, became law on Saturday without the governor’s signature. “Families need a fair shot to get ahead in this economy, and we know that education and training are the surest ways to get that,” said Joby Thoyalil, policy analyst for Maine Equal Justice Partners. “We also know that when low income parents go back to school, they often face significant barriers to completing their education. This bill will help knock down those barriers.” LIFT uses evidencebased and cost-effective strategies to provide support for parents living in poverty so that they can acquire the skills and tools they need to be successful. Both the Maine House of Representatives and the Maine Senate enacted the bill ‘under the hammer’ early this month with broad bi-partisan support. The new law will utilize available federal funds to create the Higher Opportunity for Pathways to Employment program, increasing access to programs that provide industry-recognized credentials and degrees to eligible parents. LIFT will: • Leverage federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds already available to Maine to help low-wage parents successfully achieve associate degrees or industry-recognized postsecondary credentials leading to jobs in any field that has at least an average job outlook as determined by the Department of Labor; • Help low-wage parents successfully achieve bachelor’s degrees leading to jobs in the health care, technology or engineering fields; • Guarantee that all HOPE participants will have access to wrap-around support services, such as child care and transportation, to help them succeed in their education programs; and • Provide increased capacity for educational institutions to provide navigators that will work one-on-one with program participants helping them to overcome obstacles that threaten their educational goals. “This bill removes some of the barriers I’ve faced making life work as I go back to school, juggle family obli-
gations and chart my path for a new career in a changing economy,” said Flavia Oliveira, a Waterville mother of four who testified in support of the bill. “It will help me and many like me who just want a chance to succeed.” The final version of the bill was a successful bipartisan com-
promise that garnered strong support from both Democrats and Republicans in both chambers of the Legislature. Addressing child poverty should be everyone’s goal and this new law is an example of what can be accomplished when politics are put aside, and lawmakers work
Education Foundation Marks Milestone KENNEBUNK The Education Foundation of the Kennebunks and Arundel announced they have reached the one million-dollar mark in grants awarded to the students and teachers of RSU21. ...MILESTONE from page 25 trict, researching education foundations around the country. He enrolled as a freshman at Kennebunk High School for a school year, taking classes, reading books, and engaging in classroom discussions. He talked with teachers, compiled their wish list, and then surrounded himself with people who could make a difference. In July 2006, Damon and other like-minded community members formed the Education Foundation, Damon said, “There’s a pressure on the school budget, more and more every year. The Education Foundation is a concept that will provide grants to help supplement
the school funding. In that first year the Foundation’s board of directors contributed a total of $20,000. The first grant awarded was used to send 230 freshmen from Kennebunk High School to simulate a space mission at the Challenger Learning Center in Bangor. The students spent three days using science, math, and teamwork to solve problems. Foundation grants are intended to further creativity, innovation and excellence in the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, and Arundel public schools. The ultimate goal of EFKA grants is to stimulate student learning. “MSK parents will be familiar with the 7th Grade trip to
the Leadership School at Camp Kieve, the Telling Room, and Econobunk. At the Elementary school level, we support the 4th and 5th Grade Arts Festival, Lego Robotics, and have provided 3D printers for each school. Our High School Programs include sponsoring a band/choral trip to New York City, a CNC router for the STEM lab, and robotics, James Read, EFKA president said. The EFKA has awarded grants to Kennebunk High school’s STEM coordinator, Alan Carp, that are helping the engineering program. “I recently attended his student presentations and they’d made everything from fully functional electric guitars to remote controlled skateboards,

says Read. Any student, teacher or administrator may submit an application. Funded projects must be carried out in alignment with the RSU 21 school system and have approval of the principal of each involved school. Each month the grant committee meets to discuss grants with applicants. Their recommendations then go before the EFKA board of directors. What make the EFKA unique is that it’s an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff and no office space. Damon is delighted with the results of the EFKA’s work. He knows that the support of the Foundation sparks creativity in the students and teachers. “I’m very happy to say thank you to

so many supporters. The teachers, the kids, are thrilled with so many of the programs we provide. And all of the funding essentially comes from individuals in the local community, Damon said. EFKA invites the community to celebrate the one million dollar milestone at Casino Royale. EFKA’s latest fundraiser is set for Friday, May 11, from 7 to 10:30 p.m. at the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport. Instead of the usual Catch the Wave silent and live auctions they are presenting Casino Royale, a night of poker, craps, roulette, and blackjack with hors d’oeuvres, music by Vinyl Countdown, and a cash bar. Tickets are $100 per person and get you $1,000 of fun chips. Prizes include the much coveted limited edition Rams chair, Cocktail Making Class at Old Vines, a private charter on the Pineapple Ketch, and two tickets to Fire and Ice 2018. The event is 21+. Tickets can be purchased on the EFKA website at educationfoundationka.org. Contributions, which are tax deductible, can be made on the site or by mailing a check to Education Foundation of the Kennebunks and Arundel, P.O. Box 1531, Kennebunkport, ME 04046.

...FITCH from page 16 was most passionate. They met while Paul was president of the Coastal Singles Club in Rollinsford, NH in 1987 and had an intimate marriage ceremony on the Amtrak Downeaster on April 7, 2002. Paul greatly enjoyed attending his class reunions, the annual pilgrimage to the Fryeburg Fair, and was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. He shared his humor, smile and laughter with the world, but loved reminiscing about old times with his grandchildren the most. A man of small stature, he gave much, touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed by all. Viewing hours were held at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market St., North Berwick, on Saturday, April 14, 2018. A celebration of Paul’s life was held at the American Legion in North Berwick later that day. A private graveside ceremony with military honors will be held at the Southern Maine Memorial Veterans Cemetery, in Springvale, on a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to go to Safe Haven Humane Society of Wells, a no-kill feline rescue. A special thank you to all the doctors, nurses, and repre-
sentatives from the Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Southern Maine Medical Center, York County Dialysis, and Hospice. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. Condolences may be expressed online at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com.

Don MacAulay, 79 By Marvin Pave for The Boston Globe GULFPORT, FL & YORK – Don MacAulay felt exhilarated in the 1950s when he ran track for Commerce High School, competing in the relay in the annual Boston Athletic Association meet at Boston Garden against freshmen from other city high schools. “I remember the thrill of running around that track with thousands of people cheering for
me, he told the Globe in 2011. “I think it was then I realized this was something I wanted to stay with. He did so in many ways. MacAulay was a popular teammate on the Northeastern University track team, head coach of Stoneham High School’s 1971 state Class C championship indoor and outdoor boys’ squads, a respected track official and pioneering inventor, and a chronicler of college and high school track as a Globe correspondent. “Don was an inspiration to many, said his friend Irwin Cohen, a Northeastern teammate and a former track coach and athletic director at the university. “As an athlete he always gave his best, and that’s what he was like as a coach, official, and writer— always striving for perfection. MacAulay, whose officiating assignments included the Boston Marathon, died March 19 from complications of liver disease while in hospice care at Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg, Fla. He was 79 and divided his time between Gulfport, Fla., and York, Maine. “Don was part of the old guard of officials and timers who helped us organize the Boston Marathon for decades, and he helped make the event what it is
today, said Boston Athletic Association CEO Tom Grilk. With longtime track official and coach Joe Abelon of Lynn, a former Northeastern teammate, MacAulay founded Ab-Mac Finish Line Systems. They devised a series of chutes that processed up to 300 runners per minute, faster than any previous manual system. The chutes, which runners funnel through at the end of the race, were used at the Boston Marathon before the advent of computer chips. “We found a need and we filled it, MacAulay told the Globe. Abelon described him as “very motivated with a genuinely friendly demeanor, and a loyal friend. Chris Lane, a former Massachusetts Track & Field Officials Association president, said MacAulay’s keen eye judging the finish line was appreciated by meet officials and coaches. “Don was respected for his knowledge, how he conducted himself, and his objectivity, Lane said. MacAulay, who also was a past president of the association and a lifetime member, initiated the Globe’s track All-Scholastic selections in the early 1970s with help from a committee of area coaches. ~ Pets ~ Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS Spook is such a remarkable cat. The evening he arrived was a surprise. The Safe Haven Adoption Center was closed, but luckily a volunteer was still there. The kitty’s owners had taken him to the vet to be euthanized, but after the vet examined him they told them he couldn’t because the animal wasn’t sick or in pain. So the caregiver called us. Safe Haven is a small shelter with limited funds, so we’re always full and use a wait list for

spared an unnecessary, premature death. We were grateful to the vet and eager to begin a new happier life for Spook. Spook is long-haired, all black, and magnificent. He is also the biggest kitty I’ve ever seen, long and solid but not fat. He was rescued as a stray kitten from the outdoors. But something was wrong with his hind leg. It didn’t support him properly. Of course he never seemed to mind and adapted perfectly. He lived a happy and normal life, and wasn’t sick a day in his life. Due to family illness and arrival of a puppy, Spook’s behavior changed and his caregivers decided they could no longer keep him. Spook does walk a little funny, but he still jumps up and down, gets around fine and uses his litter box perfectly. He is really friendly, loves people and
gets along with other kitties. He craves attention and deserves it. He will be a fantastic family member and is eager to meet you! Our adoption center needs scoopable litter, canned cat food, and financial support for our mounting vet bills. Please help, no matter how small the amount. All is needed and welcome. Donate on our website or at Safe Haven, PO Box 91 Wells, ME 04090. Drop off supplies at 1420 Post Road, next to the Wells Library, 207-646-1611 Open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Our Thrift Shop, next to IGA, welcomes donations of quality and useful items. Pots, pans, kitchen utensils, small appliances, bath, beach, hand towels in good condition, wall clocks, artwork, jewelry, books, are all needed. Thank you for all your support!

~ Classifieds & News ~ director of the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association, recalled that it was not uncommon for MacAulay to officiate at a meet and then jot down a few notes for his next Globe story. After the Globe’s 1975 All-Scholastic team was published, the Rindge Tech track squad wrote a letter to the sports department commending MacAulay’s caring and his “superb knowledge, insight and hard work.” In the 2011 Globe interview, MacAulay said officiating and writing were ways “of staying close to the sport. I got to enjoy the guys and girls more through the years, and it was more than just a job, it was a pleasure.” Donald Campbell MacAulay was a son of Andrew C. MacAulay, who worked as a book binder at the Houghton Mifflin Co., and the former Margaret Fleming. A student co-op at the Globe while attending Northeastern, MacAulay served in the Army after graduating in 1961. He subsequently coached at Stoneham High and worked for several years in public relations for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. MacAulay was an avid Bruins fan who rooted with the legendary Gallery Gods—

dozens of dedicated fans who used to sit together in the Boston Garden’s second balcony. He met Ann Murphy of Brockton after a Bruins-Rangers game. They married in 1980, and in 1991 they purchased the Faircrest Motel in York, which they operated until two years ago. “I admired Don’s ability to tell a story, his honesty, and his hard work,” said his wife, who is MacAulay’s only immediate survivor. “At one time, he worked days for the state, nights at the Globe, and weekends at track meets.” MacAulay was a past president of the Rotary Club in Ogunquit, and was a member of York’s 350th anniversary committee. He belonged to a group, dubbed the “over the hill gang,” that played golf Thursdays at Cape Neddick Country Club in York. He also was a starter at the Twin Brooks Golf Club in St. Petersburg, where a tree will be planted in his memory. A memorial Mass will be said on May 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Christopher by the Sea Church in York. A celebration of MacAulay’s life will follow at the York Harbor Inn. Special Olympians Compete in Spring Games NORTH BERWICK More than 400 Special Olympians are expected to attend the York County Spring Games on Thursday, May 3, at Noble High School. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 9 a.m. and events begin immediately thereafter and continue through 2 p.m. Special Olympics athletes from all over York County attend the annual event, which is a divisioning event for the Special Olympics Maine State Summer Games, held each June in Orono. Athletes participate in track and field events, and there is a division for athletes using wheelchairs and other assistive devices as well. Sponsors of the event include the Knights of Columbus,
York Hospital, Coastal Fitness, and the Kittery Lions. Nearly all of the event officials are student athletes from Noble High School. Logistical support is provided by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Many Law Enforcement agencies send representatives who assist in award presentations. The events are open
to the public and spectators are welcome. Concessions are available. It’s recommended you bring folding chairs as seating is limited. Noble High School is located at 388 Somersworth Rd. in North Berwick. On-site parking is available. Please observe all signs to park in designated areas.
...SIMIC from page 13 history of ideas, politics, on and on. When I started teaching at UNH in 1973, this was the end of the Vietnam War, and student protests were still taking place, so back then students were “veterans” [i.e. experienced]. They were on the ball. That’s the biggest change. TG: Tell us about your writ-

ing habits. Do you write every day? Morning or night? What’s your inspiration? CS: I still write each day, but it has changed so much over the years. I’m 75 years old, you know. I’ve had many different habits at different phases in my life. I’ve pretty much covered all the possibilities. I’ve worked late, late at night for years. I’ve worked early, early in the morning, afternoon, midday. As for inspiration, things percolate slowly and then something happens, and I begin to scribble down words or phrases or lines of poetry, so it has evolved as a mystery how these things come about. Most poems that I’ve written I have
Local Rower Competes in Cup WELLS The Worcester Polytechnical Institute women’s rowing varsity eight, including Jasmine Loukola of Wells, has earned the NEWMAC Boat of the Week accolades for their performance in the Bernard Brown Cup. The group was also named as the WPI Women’s Student-Athlete of the Week. Marlies de Jong, Melissa Bazakas-Chamberlain, Jasmine Loukola, Christine Hovermale, Sarah Wutka, Kinsey McNamara, Eva Barinelli, Diana Celaj and coxswain Madison
Healey was the first WPI crew to capture the Bernard Brown Cup since 2013. The Engineers, ranked ninth in the CRCA/USRowing Coaches Top 15, crossed the finish line in 6:44.30 while 11th-ranked Tufts followed with a 6:46.01 in the cup portion of the headline race. No. 12 William Smith also rowed a sub-seven minute 2K to take third. WPI hosts the NEWMAC Championship Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond. The event is slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. with the varsity eight currently scheduled for 9:15 a.m.
no idea how they started or why. There’s nothing clear cut. Nothing where I could say, “Yes, this is the way I work.” Writers, artists really need to have habits and routines, but poets are different in how they work. Some have to have a routine, sit at a particular desk with a particular writing notebook, some kind of ritual associated with the writing work. I have none. TG: No rituals? CS: Nothing. [Laughs.] To read more of this inter-
view, and to find out what Simic thinks of translations, art, and music, visit our Facebook page. The reading is at First Congregational Church at 23 Pepperrell Road in Kittery Point. The suggested donation is $20, which admits one to both events. All proceeds benefit the work of the Kittery Art Association. Doors open a half hour before each event.
