Threat of Powassan Virus Comes To Maine Powassan (POW) virus is transmitted to humans by infected ticks. It is not transmitted directly from person-to-person. Approximately 75 cases of POW virus disease were reported in the United States over the past 10 years. Most cases have occurred in the Northeast and Great Lakes region. Signs and symptoms of infection can include fever, headache, vomiting, weakness, confusion, seizures, and memory loss. Long-term neurologic problems may occur. There is no specific treatment, but people with severe POW virus illnesses often need to be hospitalized to receive respiratory support, intravenous fluids, or medications to reduce swelling in the brain. Anyone bitten by a tick in

an area where the virus is commonly found can get infected with POW virus. The risk is highest for people who live, work or recreate in brushy or wooded areas, because of greater exposure to potentially infected ticks. The incubation period (time from tick bite to onset of illness) ranges from one week to one month. Many people who become infected with POW virus do not develop any symptoms. POW virus can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord). The best way to prevent POW virus disease is by protecting yourself from tick bites. There is no vaccine against POW virus.

Avoid contact with ticks by avoiding wooded and bushy areas with high grass. Apply insect repellents to bare skin, according to label instructions. Repellents containing DEET can be applied to exposed skin, but only last a few hours. Clothing and gear can be treated with permethrin, which

remains protective through several washings. Find and remove ticks immediately before they have a chance to bite and attach. Bathe or shower (preferably within 2 hours after being outdoors) to wash off and find ticks on your body. Conduct a full-body tick check. Parents should thoroughly check children, especially in their hair. Also examine clothing, gear and pets. If you think you or a family member may have POW virus disease, it is important to consult your healthcare provider. Information provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Together, Great Works, York Land Trust, and Nancy Breen, owner of Hilton-Winn Farm, developed a trail network that threads throughout these three properties. “This project is an example of what can be accomplished when people work together: three organizations, three properties, four towns, and a new trail network that connects them all. It's all about the collaboration and connections. Speaking to the development of the trail

network, Stewardship Director for Great Works Regional Land Trust, Darrell DeTour, stated. The new network features six interconnected trails that cover approximately three and a half miles of terrain. The trail system meanders through a variety of habitats including open field, upland forest, wetlands, and the riparian corridors along Tatnic Brook and the Ogunquit River. It also includes a portion of the historic Hilton Lane. Hikers can enjoy encounters with wildlife and the natural world while exploring a landscape rich with history of the Tatnic Region.“This partnership deepened the bond we all share

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Latin Bugalu at The Dance Hall KITTERY On Saturday, May 6 at 8 p.m. Lookie Lookie comes to The Dance Hall in Kittery. Boston’s Lookie Lookie is the brainchild of bassist Chris Maclachlan, best known for his work in the seminal Boston punk band Human Sexual Response. Maclachlan has an abiding love for Latin Bugalu, a crossover genre invented by Newyorican musicians in the 1960s. Incredibly fun and catchy, Bugalu lies somewhere between the stately Cuban sounds of the 50s and the manic high salsa of the 70s. Top artists included Joe Cuba and Ricardo Ray, whose tunes form

the backbone of the new band's repertoire. Lookie Lookie is a group of fellow musical explorers who have bonded over Latin Bugalu, a melange of styles that includes Afro-Cuban rhythms, mambo, rock and soul. All eight of the members come from other bands, in a variety of styles, but this is one “side project that captured all of their imaginations. A quick look at the Lookie Lookie roster is intriguing enough. Tickets are $16 in advance and $20 at the door and can be purchased at TheDanceHallKittery.org and Brownpapertickets.com.

BUSINESS & FINANCE 3 Reasons your Small Business should offer an Employee-Retirement Plan

Small business owners probably think they have enough headaches already, what with

meeting payroll, dealing with government regulations and pleasing customers.

Setting up a retirement plan for their employees is just extra red tape – and possibly ex-

pense – they can do without. But creating such a plan is more doable than they may realize and even comes with benefits for the small business and its owner, says Andrew Denney, founder and CEO of Prosperity Financial Group. “I’ve worked with some employee retirement plans where there was in excess of $500 million in the plan,â€? Denney says. “At the other end, I’ve seen businesses with as few as 10 employees set up a plan.â€? Yet as a group, small businesses tend to forgo retirement plans. For example, only 22 percent of workers at firms with fewer than 10 employees report having access to a workplace savings plan or pension, compared with 74 percent at firms with 500 or more, according to a Pew Charitable Trusts report. Employee-sponsored 401(k) and IRA plans are among the more popular options for businesses that do offer a retirement benefit. Those savings plans allow the employees to deposit money routinely in the accounts with a deduction taken out of their paychecks. Since these are tax-deferred retirement plans, the employees see a lower income-tax bill at the end of the year. Some employers also offer a company match, providing an even heftier balance to the accounts. But employees aren’t the only ones who benefit. Denney says there’s also an upside for the small business owner, including: • Employee recruiting and

retention. Any business wants to hang onto good employees and offering a retirement plan helps do that. They’ll be happier knowing they’re more likely to have some financial security in retirement. A retirement benefit also serves as a recruiting tool. Imagine a job candidate who’s weighing similar offers from two businesses, but one has a retirement plan and the other doesn’t. “It separates you from the pack,â€? Denney says. • A lower tax bill. The business potentially can reduce its tax burden because a company’s contributions to the retirement plan are tax deductible. In some cases, the businesses also may qualify for a tax credit to help offset the cost of starting the plan, according to the IRS. • An opportunity to invest in your own retirement. Like their employees, small business owners may not want to work forever and need to set aside money for their own retirements. They’ll enjoy the same tax-deferred benefits the employees do as they build that nest egg. “It’s worthwhile for a small business owner to investigate whether an employee retirement plan is more attainable than they might realize,â€? Denney says. “A financial professional with experience in setting up such plans can explain to them the advantages and disadvantages, and suggest which plan would work best for See PLAN page 15...

Feeling Stuck in a Lousy Job? Take a Look Inward Taylor sits in her 6 x 8 cubicle waiting for the next IT ticket to come her way and suddenly feels the walls closing in around her. She feels like she’s suffocating and is only seconds away from a panic attack, her third this month. In her mind, it’s all because of the job. And that makes her like a lot of other people. A 2016 survey of 8,000 workers across three continents – North America, Europe and Asia – found that 15 percent of Americans hate their jobs. That number was nearly 5 percent higher than the next closest nation of job haters. Taylor won’t deny that she would be part of that 15 percent. Although she has taken a leave of absence because of the stress she feels from her job, and admits that it has caused problems in her personal life, she feels stuck in this job she doesn’t like, with little hope of leaving it in the near future. While Taylor is quick to blame co-workers, her workload or what she sees as poor management, the answer to her problems might actually be closer than she thinks. “Most people don’t want to acknowledge responsibility for their life, their story and what is not working in their life, says Carol Talbot, a keynote speaker and author of “YOU the Divine

Genius.â€? Talbot says that people who are stuck in situations they don’t like should take a step back and ask themselves “how did I create that?â€? For those who are unhappy with their job situation, she says, there are other questions they also might want to start asking themselves: • Do I hate my job or do I hate my field? Those who are frustrated with their job situation shouldn’t be so quick to look for a career change. Often jobseekers will take a position just to get their foot in the door of a certain industry or company. If this was the case, Talbot says, ...PLAN from page 14 their situation.â€? Andrew Denney, founder and CEO of Prosperity Financial Group (www.pfgmidwest. com), has more than 13 years’ experience in the finance industry, where he advises clients in such areas as retirement planning, asset protection, estate planning and wealth management. then perhaps it’s time to examine other positions that more closely resemble that ideal job or have a discussion with management to evaluate which position in the company is the best fit. • What kind of work would I do for free? Perhaps music producer Quincy Jones summed it up best when he said: “The people who make it to the top – whether they’re musicians, or great chefs, or corporate honchos – are addicted to their calling... [they] are the ones who would be doing whatever it is they love, even if they weren’t being paid.â€? Those who are passionate about

their work often feel as though they never worked a day in their life. • Do I have the courage to act? Plenty of people stuck in a job they don’t like know what they want but give up quickly after a few rejections. It takes courage to make a change, particularly when it comes to a career. “I encourage others to go beyond the boundaries of who they believe themselves to be,â€? Talbot says. “You are more than you think you are.â€? Carol Talbot (www.caroltalbot.me), author of the International Best-Seller, “YOU The

York Hospital Receives Grant from Maine Health Access Foundation to Expand Addiction Care YORK York Hospital has received a planning grant from the Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) to increase medical training and build treatment capacity in

order to begin offering medication assisted treatment (MAT) services to people who are struggling with opiate addiction, including medically underserved populations. MeHAF funding, which totals $100,000 over two

years, will support the York Hospital Integrated Medication Assisted Treatment program in the Seacoast Area and southern York County. Maine’s opioid crisis claimed 378 lives last year.

Among the counties with the highest number of opioid-related deaths, York County ranks second with 38 deaths - and fourth in natal abstinence syndrome, with 86 births. “Doctors have a mandate to alleviate pain and suffering, but also have a social responsibility to patients and their families, said York Hospital’s Director of Emergency Services Dr. Robert Hulefeld. “I’d like to see prescription monitoring programs across state lines, more treatment options, and community resources. York Hospital will engage a broad-based network of partners, including primary care providers, behavioral health specialists with expertise in substance use and addiction care, emergency medical services, law enforcement, and peer support and mutual aid groups, to ensure the necessary referral relationships and wrap-around services to support expanded access to

MAT in primary care settings. “York Hospital plans to design a new patient treatment and recovery program. Based upon our recent success with the Opioid Roundtable Community Group, a collaborative of hospital executives, clinicians, counselors and community partners to address the growing opioid epidemic in our area, we understand the important institutional role the hospital plays in southern Maine and will lead efforts to support successful recovery for our residents, noted York Hospital President and CEO, Jud Knox. “We remember these are our patients, our families, friends and neighbors added Knox, “and we will not stand idly by while this epidemic grows in our community. For more information, contact York Hospital’s Friendraising Office at 207-351-2385 or email info@yorkhospital.com.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, Hi. I wanted to format my USB stick on my PC but it keeps on saying the media is writeprotected. I really need help and I don't know what to do, please help. Osibaht Dear Osibaht, There are a couple of ways the USB stick might have become write- protected. You will have to investigate and find out what type of write- protection is on your stick. There might be a write protection switch on the drive itself. Look closely on your USB stick for a small switch on the side or bottom and if you find one make sure it is not in the locked position. If you don't have a switch on your USB stick, it might be write- protected in the drive properties. Right-click on the USB drive in Windows Explorer and click on "Properties". Click on the "Security" tab and change the settings to allow everyone to read and write to the drive. Check to see if an individual file is set to read-only. That might be preventing the drive from formatting, however on my computer I was able to set a file as read-only and it still allowed me to format the drive. It is also possible that the drive is corrupted and you will not be able to format it. I hope this helps you figure out the problem. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, What is a PC Cleaner? Thanks, Robin Dear Robin, I'm guessing that you are talking about programs that claim to speed up your computer by cleaning it out. There seems to be a lot of them out there, and they are always advertising trying to get you to purchase their product. The truth is, you don't need to waste your money, most of the things that these programs do can be easily done on your own, and some of them are automatically done for you by Windows. For example, some PC Cleaner programs say that they defragment your hard drive for you. Actually, your Windows operating system automatically defragments your hard drive for you. Many of the tasks run by a PC Cleaner program can be done simply following these directions: 1. Open File Explorer (Or Windows Explorer) and click on

"This PC" in the left column. 2. Right Click on your hard drive in the right side of the window, and click, "Properties" in the context menu. 3. Click the "Disk Cleanup" button on the General tab, select the types of files you want to clean up and click the button that says, "Clean up system files". 4. Once that is finished, click the "Tools" tab and use the two tools on that page to defragment and check your hard drive for errors. That will clean up your computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do I know what my computer is named? When I log into my Microsoft account, I see several computers listed, but I am only using two computers, a desktop and a laptop. I can remove the computers I don't use any more, but I can't tell from the names which ones are old and which are new. Can you help? Thanks, Ron

Dear Ron, You can easily find the name of your Windows computer with the following steps: 1. Right-click on the start button and click on "System" in the context menu that appears. 2. In the middle section, you will see "Computer Name" followed by the name of your computer. You can even give your computer a more descriptive name by clicking on the, "Change Settings" link in that section. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady: I have an Apple 5C. How do I get the Photos from my phone to my PC? Thanks for all the help you give us. Mike Dear Mike, The easiest way to get your photos from your phone to your PC or any other device with internet access is to use iCloud.

On your phone, go to the settings, then icloud, and make sure photos is turned on. There is a setting under photos named, iCloud Photo Library. Turn this setting on, in addition to the "Upload to My Photo Stream" setting. Once these settings are turned on, it might take a little time for everything to sync with iCloud. On your computer, open your browser and go to www. icloud.com. Log into your apple account, and click on the icon that says, "Photos". Select the photos you want to download to your PC, then click the "Download" button at the top. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Berwick Academy

Boys' Varsity Lacrosse Wednesday, April 19 Berwick 9, Proctor 8 (ot) Current Records: Berwick Academy 2-3, Proctor 4-3. Brad Simas (2g), Derek Muse (2g), Byron Welch (2g), Jack Mareki (1,1), Tanner Derby (1g); Connor Derby (1g); Goalie: Jake Smith (9 saves). Berwick traveled over to Andover, NH to take on Proctor Academy and put together their most comprehensive game of the season. The opening quarter was marked by good possession in the offensive half and quick, organized defense in the other. Focus here allowed the visitors to build a 4-0 lead on goals by Jack Marecki, Byron Welch, and a pair by Brad Simas. It wasn’t long, however, before the talented Hornets came alive and answered back scoring 7 of their own, capitalizing on some sloppy turnovers by the Bulldogs. With a half-time score of 7-5, Berwick saw themselves in a favorable spot, knowing that better ball protection was the most judicious route. Effort here coupled with some exceptional goal-tending and distribution by Jake Smith, helped minimize the damage the hosts inflicted in the first half, and kept them to just a single goal in the second half. As the game entered the final minutes, and with the game knotted at 8 on a pair of goals by the Derby brothers and two more by Derek Muse and Welch, Berwick was awarded a two-minute man advantage, which presented an excellent opportunity to put the game on ice. Unfortunately, a dropped

~ Sports Scoreboard ~ pass put the ball in their opponent’s sticks, where it remained until the penalty expired, and shortly thereafter the final seconds ticked away in regulation time. With overtime afoot, only a single goal would decide this evenly played contest, and with three minutes gone the ball found its way to captain Derek Muse who went directly at his defender, slipped past him, and emphatically put the game winner in the awaiting net. 9-8.

Sunday, April 23 Berwick 6, Tilton 5 Berwick Goals: Byron Welch 3, Derek Muse 1, Tanner Derby 1, Connor Derby 1; Berwick Goalies: Jake Smith 5 saves, Greg Stohrer 3 saves. The Bulldogs began another contest with an early afternoon tilt with the Rams of the Tilton School. In a game that was starved for goals, the visitors from Berwick managed to net just enough to drive away with a 6-5 victory. With a half-time score of just 3-2, things resembled a Bruins-Senators playoff game rather than a lacrosse score, but with a few extra-man opportunities for both teams in the second half, chances began to slightly open up. Tilton made things interesting late in the game with a couple of goals to narrow the lead, but Berwick managed to hold on and see things out. The defensive trio of Ben Davis, Pete Marshall, and Ben Joslin standing in for an injured Rafe Gaughan gave goalies, Jake Smith and Greg Stohrer, plenty of protection, while the offensive was boosted by a hat trick by Byron Welch and goals by Derek Muse and Connor and Tanner Derby.

Overall, a good week for Berwick, taking a pair of wins off of Proctor and Tilton from the Lakes Region League, though dropping a disappointing one to EIL foe Pingree.

Tuesday, April 25 Berwick (4-4) 15, Landmark (2-2) 10 Points: Derek Muse 5 g 3a; Byron Welch 4, 1; Jack Marecki 3, 2; Connor Derby 1g; Tanner Derby 2g; Liam Collins 1a. Goalie: Grant Quinn 6 saves. In spite of the raw, rainy conditions in South Berwick, the Bulldogs raced off to a 9-4 halftime lead and while Landmark mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter to make things interesting, the hosts had things well in hand. Derek Muse led all scorers with 5 goals and 3 assists, and his attack partner, Jack Marecki collected 3 and 2. Byron Welch had a big day in the midfield dodging hard and finishing sharply adding 4 goals and an assist to his ever growing season total. Liam Collins and Jackson Sidford added some great support in the clears and ride, while the defense grouping of Pierce Wood, Peter Marshall, and Ben Joslin protected goalie Grant Quinn nicely. Curtis Wirbal played considerable minutes as our LSM, offering a good deal of help to face off middie Ryan Gaulin, who won 16 of the draws. The Derby brothers, Tanner and Connor, also collected points on the day. In the passing days, the Bulldogs hope to return some injured players and look forward to a Blue and White bash this weekend against a top foe in the Abbey.

Girls' Varsity Lacrosse Wednesday, April 19 Berwick 10, Tilton 5 In cold April temperatures, Berwick pulled ahead of Tilton, 10-5, late in the game. Much of the contest had BA leading by only a goal or two, but with under 10 minutes to go, the Bulldogs put on the jets and secured the win with a few unanswered goals. The girls worked hard at both ends of the field, but getting the draw controls and a few crucial turnovers on defense made the difference. Mackenzie Mallett was the leading scorer with 4G, Laura Hoy had 2G, Charlotte Noerdlinger 1G and 1A, Teya Adams had 2G, and Rayne Zimmermann had 1G. Adams led the team with 5 ground balls. Senior GK Caroline Rizzo came up with 14 big saves.

Friday, April 21 Berwick 7, Winsor 13 The Bulldogs lost to Winsor on Friday 13-7. On a rainy afternoon, the Bulldogs had a hard time taking control of the contest despite some high points. Teya Adams had 4g, Annie Vatcher 1g, Mackenzie Mallett 2g. Caroline Rizzo had 8 saves.

Girls' Varsity Softball Wednesday, April 19 Berwick 0, Bancroft 21 Berwick Academy Girls Varsity Softball had their home opener today at Berwick Academy in South Berwick. Berwick lost to the Bancroft School in 5 innings by a score of 21-0. Both Delaney Kingsland of MA and Andrea Caradonna of MA each went 1-2 with a single.

Marshwood HS

Girls' Varsity Tennis Monday, April 24 Marshwood 0, Massabesic 5 1st S: Thyme Whitten 6-2,6-0 over Emerson McCoomb; 2nd S: Ivorie Dickenson 6-2,6-2 over Morgan Hasty; 3rd S: Lylliana Pelletier 7-5, 6-1 over Molly Barrett; 1st D: Ashliegh Miller and Elizabeth Brown 6-1, 6-2 over Bridget LaSelva and Amelia Rowell; 2nd D: Zolyia Nedzbala and Amy Barke 6-2, 6-2 over Halliday Dinsmore-Patch and Anna Molin.

Girls' Lacrosse Tuesday, April 25 Marshwood 17, MGA 4 MHS:(1-0). Hannah Costin 7g6a, Luci Albers 3g6a. Reagan Nichols 3g2a, Ruby Albers 1g, Abby Rowe 1g, Nicole Villinski 1g, Olivia Melton 1g, Skyler Amsden 10 saves. MGA: (0-1) Zoe Mazur 3g1a, Catherine Reid 1g.

Traip Academy

Boys' Baseball Friday, April 14 Traip 4, Buckfield 1 The Traip Academy baseball team opened its regular season with a 4-1 win versus Buckfield on April 14 in Kittery. Shane MacNeill and Trevor Salema combined to strike out 18 Bucks in the victory. MacNeill earned the win with 12 strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings pitched, while Salema picked up the eight-out save. Isaac Keefe and Hunter Sawtelle had RBI singles for the Rangers, while Ryan Perkins reached base all three times and scored twice.
