York’s Spencer Takes Command of 42nd Infantry Division YORK New York Army National Guard Major General Thomas Spencer, a resident of York, took command of the Troy, NY-based 42nd Infantry Division during a change of command ceremony held on April 17 at the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs Headquarters in Latham, NY. The division is one of eight National Guard division headquarters with 20,000 soldiers assigned to elements in New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New Hampshire. Spencer (pictured here with his wife Wendy) is a veteran of the Iraq War and Operation Desert Shield/Storm in 1990-1991, and has been serving as the Assistant Deputy Commander for Sus-
tainment for the 42nd Infantry Division since 2018. This included a deployment to the Middle East in 2020. Spencer replaces Army National Guard Maj. Gen. Steven Ferrari who is retiring after 40 years of service in the military. Ferrari took command of the division in February of 2017. “Tom, you have a critical job ahead, leading one of the Army’s 18 divisions. We all know that you are the right leader for this huge responsibility,” said Maj. Gen. Raymond Shields, the adjutant general of the New York National Guard. The 42nd Infantry Division was first organized in World War I by National Guard forces from across the United States. The division’s first chief-
of-staff, then Col. Douglas MacArthur, said the division would stretch across the United States “like a rainbow.” Since World War I the division has been nicknamed “The Rainbow Division” and its patch is a rainbow. The division liberated the Dachau Concentration Camp in World War II and deployed to Iraq in 2005. It was the first National Guard division to see combat since the Korean War. In his remarks, Spencer promised his audience, both in the headquarters building and watching on video, that he would ensure that the division’s standards never falter. “Soldiers of the 42nd Infantry Division, you have my commitment that our Soldiers are the See SPENCER page 4...

I wanted to tell their story through my eyes and canvases,” said Della Bernarda. The paintings will hang in the newly built 40,000-square-foot Wells Public Safety Building located at 1563 Post Road in Wells. The Wells Fire Department consists of ten full-time fire fighters and eight on-call firefighters. The Fire Department is led by Fire

Habitat York County Hosts NCCC AmeriCorps Team YORK COUNTY Habitat York County is excited to be hosting a team of six NCCC AmeriCorps members. AmeriCorps NCCC is a full-time service program that provides lodging and travel expenses, allowing young adults to serve on a team and make an impact in communities across the county while gaining valuable leadership skills. Habitat York County is the last stop on the team’s 10-month journey. The team is primarily working on Habitat’s home building project in Saco. When they are not at the build site, they are helping in Habitat’s Kennebunk ReStore. “This is the first time Habitat has hosted a NCCC team. Having the team on the build
site four days week has allowed us to make incredible progress on the home,” said Program Manager Alana Shapiro. Prior to the team’s arrival Habitat volunteers had completed interior framing and put sheathing on the roof. The team has been shingling the roof and will begin siding the home. “The team and I have really enjoyed learning how to shingle from John (Habitat’s Construction Manager). We are excited to help create a warm and safe home for Sarah and her boys,” said NCCC Team Leader Hillary Johnson. Sarah, a current Saco resident and disabled mother of five boys will purchase the new home. Habitat partners with local, low-income families who

have demonstrated need for safe, affordable housing, a willingness to partner and the ability to repay an affordable mortgage. Hancock Lumber is generously donating the building materials for this project. For more information about the Saco Build, visit www.habitatyorkcounty.org.
BERWICK The Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act, signed into law in 2017, designates March 29 of each year as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. On Saturday, March 27, the members of Charles S. Hatch Post #79 assembled at Berwick’s Veteran’s Memorial Park to hold a remembrance ceremony. The keynote address, a Vietnam Memorial tribute, was eloquently delivered by Post #79 1st Vice Commander Bryan English. He emphasized that “as a nation we owe it to the men and women who served in Vietnam to

recognize them for their service” and recalled that as a young child growing up in the south during the 1960’s, there was always a prayer at his church to “Bless the boys in Vietnam and bring them home”. He concluded his presentation with these words: “Thank you for serving. May God truly bless those still in Vietnam, those here among us and may he continue to keep them safe in body, mind and spirit.” The event was made more solemn by the presence of the Post Honor Guard, under the command of Honor Guard Captain Forrest Davis, with the rendering of a 21- gun salute. The Berwick Community Television team filmed the ceremony and created a moving and heartfelt video that includes impromptu interviews with some of the veterans of the Vietnam War who were in attendance. The video can be accessed via BCTV OnDemand through the Berwick town website at www.berwickmaine.org.

~ News ~ Clean Transportation Plan to Accelerate Climate Goals AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills signed an executive order to accelerate Maine’s progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation by calling for a “clean transportation roadmap” to achieve the state’s climate plan goal of increasing the number of electric vehicles (EVs) on the road in Maine by 2030. The roadmap, due by De-
cember, will develop recommendations to enhance the EV market in Maine, expand charging infrastructure, evaluate effects on electric utilities and the grid, and ensure an equitable and affordable transition to clean transportation for all people in Maine. Reducing emissions from transportation – which is the source of more than half of all greenhouse gas emissions
...ESSAY from page 2 Winning entries will also be published in the May 2021 issue of Maine Town & City, MMA’s monthly magazine, which is mailed to 4,300 municipal officials statewide and posted at the MMA website (www.memun. org). MMA’s Citizen Education program aims to educate citizens of all ages about the importance,
in Maine – is a key piece of Maine’s overall effort to curb state emissions by 45% by 2030. The state’s climate action plan, Maine Won’t Wait, estimates Maine needs 219,000 light-duty EVs on the road by 2030 to meet its emissions targets. Work on the clean transportation roadmap will be led by the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future and the Governor’s Energy Office, in concert with the Maine De-
partment of Transportation, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, and the Efficiency Maine Trust. “Growing the number of clean vehicles in Maine to reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to transportation is a key opportunity to address climate change in Maine,” said Hannah Pingree, Director of the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future, and co-chair of the Maine Climate Council. “The clean transporta-

tion roadmap will make recommendations to ensure Maine consumers have affordable options for EVs, and access to charging infrastructure that meets the needs of rural and urban drivers alike.” “As electric vehicle technology advances, Maine needs to ensure we have an electric grid that can support this growth,” said Dan Burgess, Director of the Governor’s Energy Office. “The clean transportation roadmap will begin to address the grid impacts and rate design needs to support this transition.”

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ York Land Trust Hosts Native Program & Plant Sale YORK Just in time for Mother’s Day weekend, York Land Trust will host a native plant sale on Saturday, May 8, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at 1 Long Neck Marsh Road. They’ll have more than two dozen varieties of shrubs, trees and perennials available for purchase from Pierson Nurseries in Biddeford. The land trust is hosting this event as a resource for local gardeners and as an opportunity to learn about the benefits of gardening with native plants. These particular varieties are ones that have evolved within local climate and soils. They are well adapted to live here, and local pollinators are well adapted to feed on them, helping keep our local habitats abuzz. Planting native plants also helps reduce the spread of invasive species that can rapidly take over landscapes and out-compete native species. And while some non-native ornamental plants have especially alluring colors and forms, there’s still plenty to be found in native varieties. York Land Trust will host a program, “Gardening With Native Plants”, also open to the public on Friday, May 7, 1-2 p.m. at 1 Long Neck Marsh Road,
with registration required. For more information, visit www.yorklandtrust.org or call 207-363-7400 x 2.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ OMAA Opens for 68th Season on May 1 OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA), located at 543 Shore Road in Ogunquit, is open for their 68th season on May 1, daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with its sculpture park and gardens, weekly talks and tours, multiple galleries, and a variety of interesting exhibits. A few of the presentations include: “One Hand Clapping: Jo Sandman” - Sandman’s innovative artistic practice explores complex interconnections between the physical world and the structural underpinnings of abstraction. Working with a variety of materials, Sandman realigns the connections between painting, sculpture, drawing, photography and assemblage with highly personal imagery. Each outcome is a supposition about the natural world and her own self-study. Sandman studied
with Hans Hofmann and Robert Motherwell at Black Mountain College; as an artist and educator, she has taught at Wellesley College, The Art Institute of Chicago and Massachusetts College of Art and Design. In 2018, OMAA acquired 33 of her works through the Jo Sandman Legacy Project. In this exhibition, the collection is presented for the first time alongside major pieces from public and private collections. “Khalil G. Gibran: The Surface and Below” - The first focused exploration of its kind, this exhibition examines a finite selection of paintings from Khalil Gibran’s early and formative years as a Boston Expressionist. Working in encaustic and oil — alongside contemporaries including Mark Tobey, Karl Zerbe and Maud (Cabot) Morgan — Gibran’s visual meditations on mysticism and ab-
straction identify the immediacy, beauty and prescience of painting. The exhibition, organized with guest curator Anthony Moore, includes twelve works of art painted 1948-1952, most of which have never been publicly exhibited. “Remember the Ladies: Women Painters in Ogunquit, 1900-1950”- Women have long been the subject of art, traditionally depicted as objects of beauty, or engaged in domestic and practical arts. When regarded for their achievements as creators of fine art, women of the Ogunquit colony may be remembered as vanguards of American arts and culture throughout the 20th century. Trained at Charles Woodbury’s Summer School of Drawing and Painting and Hamilton Easter Field’s Summer School of Graphic Arts, female artists remain an integral part of Ogunquit’s standing
as a leading artist collective and a major cultural influence throughout New England and the U.S. Gertrude Fiske, Nellie Knopf and Susan Ricker Knox — among the colony’s most prolific painters — became influential painters, teachers and policymakers. This exhibition, organized with Darin Leese,
examines the politics and public policies that engendered compulsory education, civic engagement and professional opportunities for women. These presentations run May 1 through July 16. For more information, go to www.ogunquitmuseum.org or call 207-646-4909.
...MOTHER from page 13 will feel connected to people who may otherwise be very different to them. I think what we really need now is the chance for understanding and compassion, and we can’t be reminded enough that despite our differences we all share many things.” Participants in the project will self-record their replies to questions about their mothers and their relationships with them. Katie will then turn these recordings into audio snapshots
by editing them and adding music and sound. The snapshots will be released as individual podcast episodes starting on Mothers’ Day, May 9. FINANCE & CAREER Additional H-2B Visas To Support Tourism Industry WASHINGTON, D.C. Following a push led by U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME) and Representative
Chellie Pingree (D-ME), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced recently that they will provide an additional 22,000 H-2B visas to help
small businesses fill seasonal job openings for the upcoming season. These visas will supplement the previous supply of 33,000 H-2B visas for the second
Maine Home Sales & Prices Up AUGUSTA Strong home buyer demand continued across Maine last month, with Realtors reporting 1,313 singlefamily existing home sales — a sales jump of 16.81 percent over March 2020. According to statistics released recently
Free Tax Filing Assistance STATEWIDE Aligning with the federal government’s extension of federal income tax filing, Maine has extended the individual state income tax filing deadline to May 17. Through CA$H Maine, if you or your household made $57,000 or less in 2020, you can have your income taxes prepared for free by IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers! by Maine Listings, the statewide median sales price (MSP) reached $268,500, an increase of 17.79 percent compared to March 2020. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “Maine residential real estate sales volume and median sold values showed continued strength during March 2021,” says Aaron Bolster, Broker/ Owner of Allied Realty in Skowhegan and President of the Maine Association of REALTORS®. “The pace in the residential real estate market continues to be rapid. For March 2021, the statewide days on market statistic was 11 days, compared to 48 days for March 2020.”
The National Association of Realtors reported a 10.4 percent nationwide increase compared to the March 2020 statistics. Prices also rose 18.4 percent to reach a national MSP of $334,500. Regionally, sales in the Northeast jumped 16.9 percent and the regional MSP increased 21.4 percent to $364,800 comparing March 2021 to March 2020. “In this fast-moving market, homes become available for sale and are immediately met with pent-up buyer demand,” added Bolster. “Whether you’re a seller or a buyer, start working with a REALTOR® when you first think about transacting real estate so that you’re fully prepared and ready to take action.”
half of the current fiscal year, all of which have been claimed. “We have heard from many Maine businesses, particularly in the tourism and hospitality industries, that are having difficulty finding enough workers to fully staff inns, restaurants and hotels to prepare for the busy summer season,” said Collins, King, and Pingree, in a joint statement. “Today’s announcement will provide welcome relief to Maine employers who might otherwise be unable to open or would have to curtail their operations, hurting local communities and Maine
workers.” H-2B workers support American jobs and small businesses. Bipartisan research has found a direct correlation between increased numbers of H-2B workers and a rise in pay across the board for all employees. As required by law, employers must first make a concerted effort to hire American workers to fill open positions. H-2B visas fill needs for American small businesses when there are not enough able and willing American workers to fill the temporary, seasonal positions.

Support for Health of Family Caregivers Signed into Law WASHINGTON, D.C. Following unanimous passage by the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, the Lifespan Respite Care Reauthorization Act was recently signed into law. Authored by Representative Jim Langevin (D-RI) and Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), along with Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), this bipartisan legislation will support the health and wellbeing of family caregivers by authorizing $10 million annually for the Lifespan Respite Care program from fiscal year 2020 through fiscal year 2024. “The Lifespan Respite Care Reauthorization Act will provide critical funds to improve access to respite care services and help ease the burden on family caregivers,” said Representative Langevin, who co-authored the Lifespan Respite Care Act that became law in 2006. “There are an estimated 53 million family caregivers in the country, and respite care continues to be one of their most frequently reported unmet needs.” “In my conversations with family caregivers, I have found what they need most is respite care, a break from the
24/7 job of caregiving. Caregivers provide an estimated $470 billion in uncompensated care each year. Yet, an astounding 85 percent of caregivers have not received any respite services at all,” said Senator Collins. Respite care provides temporary relief to caregivers from their ongoing responsibilities. By protecting the health of caregivers, respite care decreases the
need for professional long-term care and allows individuals who require care to remain at home. To date, 41 states have received funding through the Lifespan Respite Care program. The program provides competitive grants to states to establish or enhance statewide respite resources and help ensure that quality respite is available and accessible to all family caregivers.
Protection for Veterans Signed into Law WASHINGTON, D.C. Following unanimous passage by the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, the State Veterans Homes Domiciliary Care Flexibility Act was signed into law. The legislation was ultimately passed as part of a broad veteran benefits improvements package, the Johnny Isakson and David P. Roe, M.D. Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020. The bipartisan legislation, authored by Senators Susan Collins (RME), Angus King (I-ME) and Dan Sullivan (R-AK), will address a current gap in care for veterans in Maine living with early-stage dementia. Domiciliary Care Flexibility Act will allow the VA to waive certain eligibility requirements to allow veterans with early-stage dementia to be cared for in state veterans’ homes when it is in the best interest of the veteran. Specifically, the legislation will require VA to implement a waiver authority, allowing the VA to grant domiciliary care per diem payments for veterans who meet at least half of the VA’s current eligibility requirements or if such a waiver would be in the veteran’s best interest. This will provide the flexibility to ensure this vulnerable group of veterans do not fall through the cracks and that VA can help address the growing needs for assistance for these patients.

By Dora Anne Mills, MD When I open up social media these days, I often see references to “pandemic pounds” and “quarantine couch calories”, among photos of banana bread and homemade mac and cheese. They reassure me that I’m not the only one struggling to eat healthy and exercise safely these last few months! The good news is that just as COVID-19 has reshaped our lives, so too has it reshaped the Diabetes Prevention Program offered by MaineHealth. We are proud to have pivoted from offering this program only in-person to now virtually. And it’s free! Designed by the U.S. CDC, the Diabetes Prevention Program helps anyone at risk for diabetes or who just wants to be healthier to lower their chance of developing type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems, like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, or stroke. troduced companion legislation in the House. The State Veterans Homes Domiciliary Care Flexibility Act also passed the Senate as stand-alone legislation on December 8. Maine Veterans’ Homes (MVH) has provided domiciliary care for veterans with early-stage dementia in its homes since 2004, but newly enforced Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) eligibility requirements have limited access for many of these veterans. The State Veterans Homes Domiciliary Care Flexibility Act will address this by providing the VA with additional flexibility to allow veterans with early-stage dementia to receive this care. “Maine’s veterans stepped up and answered the call to protect our state and our nation, and we have a responsibility to repay them with gratitude and the highest-quality care available,” said Senator King. “For decades, Maine Veterans’ Homes has helped our state fulfill that duty to our veterans, and this legislation will ensure they have the flexibility needed to continue to perform their vital services.” The State Veterans Homes

of Americans with prediabetes or are at risk for diabetes (e.g. overweight, obese, have a family history of diabetes), this program will help you significantly reduce your risk and reverse prediabetes. (Note: This class is not designed for people who already have type 2 diabetes.) The goals of the program are to lose 5-7% body weight, which is enough to usually reverse pre-diabetes, and to help you maintain healthy eating and physical activity. Participants most often see reductions in blood pressure and many other non-scale victories. Classes meet once weekly for the first four months, then once every other week to once monthly for the rest of the year. Classes are about one hour in length and are led by an instructor here in Maine or New Hampshire, who has been trained by the U.S. CDC and who serves as a coach. Classes are fun and informative, no matter what your knowledge level is. I participated this last year in MaineHealth’s Diabetes Prevention Program and loved it! Health & Fitness Improving HOPE for Alzheimer’s Act Signed into Law WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Ed Markey (D-MA), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) announced that the Improving HOPE (Health, Outcomes, Planning, and Education) for Alzheimer’s Act passed Congress as part of the year-end omnibus package and has been signed into law. The Improving HOPE for Alzheimer’s Act will require the Department of Health and Human Services to conduct outreach to make more health care providers aware of this important benefit and to report back on rates of utilization and barriers to access. “It is imperative that those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their families receive the resources they need, including information about treatment options and what medical and community services are available,” said Senator Collins. “Fortunately, following our advocacy, CMS implemented a new rule in 2018 that allows Medicare beneficiaries to receive a care planning session. Our legislation will expand access to this service by increasing awareness of this policy change among physicians. As the Co-Chair of the Senate Alzheimer’s Task Force, I will continue to support those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers.” Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States, and more than 16 million Americans provide unpaid care for people
with Alzheimer’s. The HOPE for Alzheimer’s Act requires Medicare to pay for an individual care plan for newly diagnosed Alzheimer’s patients. This benefit encourages doctors to give a clear diagnosis to patients with Alzheimer’s disease, including information about treatment options and what medical and community services are available. In 2017, less than one percent of seniors living with Alzheimer’s disease received the care planning benefit. The Improving HOPE for Alzheimer’s Act requires HHS to conduct outreach to health care practitioners about comprehensive Alzheimer’s disease care planning services, including education initiatives and materials on appropriate diagnostic evaluations and explanations of the requirements for eligibility.

As Student’s Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), the organization provides education, resources, and events for teens to make positive choices every day. It is SADD’s goal for students to stay safe as they celebrate the end of the academic year as well as all the challenges they overcome. The virtual prom provides grades 9-12 an opportunity to responsibly celebrate with games, music, giveaways, outfit contests, and more. The movie-themed event,

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, My husband has a new HP computer with Windows 10. He uses edge. Sometimes when he opens it up his favorite bar is missing. No one knows how this happens and it takes a while for it to come back. Do you know anything about this? Sue Dear Sue, While I can’t tell you what is happening to make the favorites bar disappear, I can tell you how to quickly turn it back on. 1. Open Microsoft Edge. 2. Click on the, “More” button in the upper-right corner of the window, and click on “Settings” in the drop-down menu. 3. In the settings, find the section named either “Favorites” or “Favorites Bar”. If you have a favorites section, click on the button that says, “View favorites settings”. 4. Click the button under, “Show the favorites bar” to turn it on and the favorites bar should instantly appear. If the favorites bar is already turned on, try turning it off and then back on. I hope this helps keep your favorites bar in place. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I want to be able to highlight certain text in the Reading Pane of Outlook 2016 for Incoming and Outgoing email. Example: when I save a weekly
newsletter in its’ own sub-file. If I could, for example, highlight a sentence or paragraph that would quickly tell me why I chose to save said newsletter. Based upon my research to-date, I have yet to find the answer – be it from Microsoft or outside vendors. Grrr! Yes, I can highlight other things in a given email(s) but not from the body of the email itself. I can’t be the only person in the world who would like to do this--as if I were holding a real “Hi-Liter” above a piece of paper to highlight certain words, phrases or paragraphs. Would you help? Please! Dave Dear Dave, Unfortunately, this is not a feature that is programmed into Outlook, or any other email program that I am aware of. The best work around would be to forward the email to yourself. Once you click the “Forward” button, you will be able to make changes to the subject and highlight text before you click “Send”. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I want to download a video file (of my husband’s memorial service) from my granddaughter’s Facebook page. She gives me permission but I don’t know how. I have a Windows 10 Toshiba notebook. If it cannot be done on mine, what kind of computer can it be done on? Thank you, Beverly
Dear Beverly, I am sorry to hear of your loss. Facebook does not appear to have a way to easily download videos to your computer, but with a little bit of research and testing, I have found a simple trick using Notepad that will allow to save the video of your husband’s memorial service. 1. First, go to your granddaughter’s Facebook page and find the video. 2. Once you have the video playing, right-click on it (I seem to have to right-click twice before the context menu appears) and click on “Show Video URL” in the context menu that appears. 3. A small box will open over your video with a URL (web address) in it. Right-click once on the box, and click “Copy” in the context menu that appears. 4. Now open Notepad. Just click on the start button and type, “Notepad” (without the quotes) and click on the Notepad icon. 5. Paste the video URL into Notepad. The URL you just pasted will start with, https:// www.facebook.com/. All you need to do is change the, www part of the URL to mbasic so that it looks like this: https:// mbasic. facebook.com/. 6. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Thank you so much for the wonderful column. I have been reading for many years and have learned so much. I’m having a problem with email. I use Hotmail and I made a contact group with a number of neighbors. Unfortunately I can’t seem to use it anywhere but on my laptop. I use my iPad a lot but when I put in the group name nothing comes up. Because it’s an online email program shouldn’t it be available on any platform? I do not use any mail program on my computer. I just go online and sign into Hotmail. It’s very frustrating as I need to add people one by one on my iPad or iPhone. I’d appreciate any help. Thank you Julie
and copy the list of group members from a previously sent message, then paste them into a new message. Another thing you can try is an app called, Edison Mail. It will not use my Gmail groups, but it will use groups that I have created in my contacts on my iPhone and iPad. The only catch here is that you can’t actually create the group on your phone, you need to have your contacts sync with iCloud, then go to www.icloud.com on your computer, sign into your account and create the group on the web interface. I hope this helps, Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years. To submit a question, email her at elizabeth. boston@gmail.com. Dear Julie, I use Gmail but not Hotmail. It seems that Gmail works the same way as your Hotmail. Groups can be created and used on a desktop or laptop computer, but not on the phone or tablet versions. The only work around that I have found so far is to go to your sent mail on your device

Weekly Recipe: Potato, Mozzarella and Garlic Pizza Ingredients: 1 pound of new white potatoes 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 garlic cloves crushed and chopped fine 1 10-12-inch pizza pan 1 medium size red onion sliced thin 1½ cup smoked mozzarella cheese, grated 2 tablespoons of fresh chopped rosemary or sage Salt and fresh ground black pepper 3-4 tablespoons of fresh grated Parmesan cheese to garnish
Directions: Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees. Cook potatoes in boiling water for about 5 minutes. Drain water and
leave potatoes to cool on cutting board. Slice thin about ¼ inch thick slices. Don’t worry about skin on new potatoes but if using older potatoes, peel before cooking. Heat two tablespoons of oil in a frying pan. Add the sliced potatoes and garlic and fry 5-8 minutes, turning frequently until tender. Brush pizza pan with remaining oil and coat pan well. Scatter onions on bottom of pan then arrange potatoes on top. If adding meat, add the meat on top of the onions and then cover with potatoes. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese over potatoes evenly, then add rosemary or sage. Bake 15-20 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven and sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top and cut into pieces and serve. Salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy!

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Her adorable face and long, silky black hair, golden eyes and sweet demeanor make her very easy to fall in love with. Once a stray, she’s now living the good life at Safe Haven. Seven months old, Pixie bursts into a contented purr the minute you hold her or brush her beautiful long coat. She’s now learning to enjoy the companionship of other kitties. Traip Academy Announces Recipients of Western Maine Conference Citizenship Award
KITTERY Each year the Principals and Athletic Administrators of the Western Maine Conference select two seniors from each member school who have made contributions to their school in the areas of academics, athletics, leadership and citizenship. This years recipients from Traip Academy are Mary Lombardi and Kiara Audette. Mary Lombard (left photo) is a dependable, innovative, and determined athlete and student. Over the last four years, she has been an indispensable teammate on the Traip Academy Football team. She does not hesitate to work hard to accomplish the task at hand. Additionally, she is a member of NHS, NTHS, and the Robotics Team. Last year when COVID-19 shut down the schools, she took to making masks to give out to those in the community by hanging them on the fence for people to take. This is just one example of how she looks for the good as a team player to solve issues as they arise and make a situation better. She pushes herself on and off the field, from participating in an Exchange Program to Italy to sailing tall ships off Maine’s coast in the Sea Challenge program. She is in the Engineering and Architecture program at SRTC and is looking to attend WPI or RPI in the fall. Whichever school she selects they will be lucky to have her.
