Grassroots Fund Awards Eliot Aging in Place Committee ELIOT The New England Grassroots Environment Fund has awarded the Eliot Aging in Place Committee (AIP) a $1,000 grant to support the community as it responds to the COVID-19 outbreak. Since the announcement that social isolation would become a key aspect of avoiding COVID 19, the AIP has contemplated how to assist Eliot residents to stay at home safely. The AIP was created by the Eliot Select Board to develop a more livable community and to assist Eliot residents to age in their homes. A recent conversation with State Representative

The company’s recently released, 6th annual Safest Cities in Maine report uses FBI crime statistics and US Census population data to rank the safest cities in each state and across the country. You can read the full report at www.safewise.com.

You will always find people who are helping.” Dick and Sherry Varano, owners of Varano’s Restaurante Italino, Billy’s Chowder House, and Hidden Cove Brewery in Wells, have been providing dinners to members of the senior center twice a week for the past five weeks, and intend to continue until social-distancing is over. Stay-At-Home Order Modified to Allow Business
AUGUSTA – Governor Janet Mills recently presented her administration’s plan to gradually and safely restart Maine’s economy. The plan, which comes as the state appears to be successfully flattening the curve, establishes the four gradual stages of reopening, the first of which begins May 1. The stages focus

As the administration gradually eases restrictions on some businesses and activities, it also implements protective protocols, along with broader additional health and safety measures, to protect Maine people. To that end, the governor also announced she will extend the stay-at-home order through May 31 in the form of a new “Stay Safer at Home” Executive Order. If Maine CDC detects a resurgence of the virus, the state will move quickly to halt progression through the stages and reimplement restrictions to protect public health and safety. The Maine CDC will be tracking three primary metrics in its evaluation of whether or not to progress through the stages: 1) a downward trajectory of influenza-like illnesses and COVID-like syndromic cases; 2) a downward trajectory of documented cases and newly hospitalized patients; and 3) the capacity of Maine’s hospital systems to treat all patients without crisis care and the ability of the state to engage in a robust testing program. The staged plan builds on the Governor’s current Executive Orders, which already allows grocery stores, pharmacies, financial institutions, home repair services, child care agencies, and car repair services, among others to operate, and then allows for the safe reopening of those businesses not currently operating. The upcoming four stages as contemplated by the Governor’s plan are: Beginning May 1, Stage 1 continues the prohibition on gatherings of more than 10 people, the quarantine of all people entering or returning to Maine for a period of 14 days, and the special precautions for
Annual Dragonfly Nymph Program WELLS The Wells Chamber of Commerce is once again offering dragonfly nymphs for purchase. Since 1976, dragonflies from the chamber have patrolled the skies in Wells and the surrounding towns. The program was started as an alternative to chemical spraying and has been a great success. Dragonfly nymphs are the beginning stage of the commonly called “Devil’s Darning Needle” or “Mosquito Hawk” native to the woodland ponds and swampy areas of the world. There are 450 species of dragonflies native to North America alone. The nymphs develop buried in the muddy shallows where they consume huge numbers of mosquitoes and other insects. They are considered older Mainers and others at risk of COVID-19. It calls for people who are able to work from home to continue to do so, including state employees. It will also newly require that people wear cloth face coverings in public settings where physical distancing measures are difficult to maintain, and continue strict requirements for long-term care facilities. Guidance on cloth face coverings will be issued in the coming days. The new system will provide features such as: Go Green - Register to get notifications when new bills are available online and schedule automatic payments so you never miss a deadline; Easy Searching - Search for Real Estate/Personal Property bills, without needing a bill number. The search feature works with your name or address; Balance Inquiries - Get instant balance calculations, including any interest owed, at any time. Open Burning Allowed
It’s been years since heating oil prices were this low.
Open burning will be allowed in Kittery beginning May 1. Permits are required and may be obtained
online at www.maineburnpermit. com. Permits will not be available at Kittery Dispatch. Warming and cooking fires (campfires) do not require a burn permit, however burning brush or leaves in a fire pit does require a permit. The state of Maine sets a Fire Danger Level daily, therefore permits will not be issued on days classified as high or beyond high. Permits are issued for 48 hours, so it may be possible to receive a permit on a low/moderate class day and have the class change to high the next day. The permittee is required to verify the class day after 9 a.m. on each day of burning.
Wells Town Update Re-Opening Preparations
Department heads are meeting weekly to discuss how to re-open facilities, such as the town hall, library, recreation department, and public works department. Physical preparations have begun on the acquisition and installation of acrylic barriers because of a tremendous donation from Röhm America LLC in Sanford. The town will require social distancing and face masks to be used by the public and staff. Restrictive entry will be enforced. Online solutions can soon be offered for town hall transactions, such as vehicle registrations, in order to avoid long lines. This is also true for the library and other facilities. The beach and coastal facility assessments, as well as the traditional spring time maintenance and repairs, are occurring at this time. Additionally, the town is hiring seasonal staff from lifeguards to public works staff. Visit www.wellstown.org/Jobs.aspx if you’re interested! There is a strong effort by the selectmen and town manager to work in concert with the coastal communities from Bar Harbor down to Kittery and NH towns in order to work towards opening the beaches

STATEWIDE U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine) recently participated in a video conference call with civics and history teachers from schools across Maine, who are adapting to distance learning. During the call, which was held in collaboration with Maine Department of Education’s Social Studies Specialist Joe Schmidt, Senator King provided updates on the latest federal efforts to support Maine people in the face of coronavirus, discussed the importance of our nation’s innate checks and balances, and answered questions from Maine teachers. “In the face of coronavirus, Maine’s teachers are stepping up and finding new, creative ways to keep educating our students,” said Senator King. “Dis-

Our entire state is grateful for continued efforts of Maine’s educators, and we’re all here to support their efforts in every way we possibly can.” As the coronavirus pandemic has caused cancellations of schools across the nation, Senator King has pushed to improve distance learning. He has requested funding for all K-12 students to have adequate home internet connectivity; that the FCC allow schools to utilize E-Rate program funding to pro-
vide Wi-Fi hotspots to students who lack internet access; that major internet service providers take steps to accommodate the unprecedented reliance needed to support remote technologies. As a co-chair of the Senate Broadband Caucus, Senator King has been a strong advocate for broadband infrastructure initiatives and to bridge the homework gap. In the February edition of Senator King’s monthly podcast, he was joined by Senator John Boozman (R-AR) and FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel to discuss ways to close the digital divide experienced by rural communities across the nation.

OUT Maine, a non-profit that serves LGBTQ+ youth throughout Maine, has been collaborating with other organizations to create even more free weekly workshops for youth and young adults. Workshop content ranges from life-skills building topics to creative expression. Upcoming workshops include “Poetry as a Prism for Self-Expression” with Danielle Layton on May 5 and “What is Effective Communication” with Jess Anderson on May 12. Pho-

In addition to these workshops, OUT Maine is offering weekly programming: Wednesday Youth Group for youth ages 11-18, Friday Young Adult Group for ages 18-22, and Thursday Dungeons n Dragons game for ages 11-22. These programs utilize online platforms including Zoom, Google, and Discord. Interested youth can register for programs at www.outmaine.org. Registrations are confidential as they simply pro-

New Artistic Director Faces Unpredictable Season BERWICK If you want to know how to plan for a season of summer stock theater when absolutely nothing is predictable, check in with Danielle Howard at Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick. “There will be things we have absolutely no control over, revide access to group programming “rooms.” OUT Maine is seeking more workshop presenters for online programs as it expands these offerings. If you are interested in providing a free workshop for youth, email contact rachel@outmaine.org Maine Family Planning, New Hope for Women, Camp Kieve-Wavus, Maine Youth Action Network (MYAN), Healthy Communities of the Capital Area (HCCA) and Maine Educational Opportunity Center (MEOC), as well as individual community members, are among those collaborating with OUT Maine to help keep Maine’s LGBTQ+ Maine youth and their allies connected and supported.
strictions, social distancing etc…” said Howard, Hackmatack’s new artistic director. “People just don’t know what things will look like in June.” If all goes well, Howard will be taking the helm in time to produce “The Foreigner”, “Legally Blonde”, and “The Spitfire Grill” this summer. “We are living in this day-today world and the first challenges are how will this summer happen and how will it happen safely and prosperously while navigating through the unknowns,” Howard said. “That’s been the primary focus of my attention the past few months.” Among the first unforeseen challenges facing Howard, Hackmatack’s annual in-person auditions had to be replaced with video auditions. Although Hackmatack always accepts video auditions, directors almost never cast a leading role through a video. She and the other directors spent about two weeks watching over 200 videos and callback submissions. The casting team created an online spread sheet of actors to be shared among Howard, theater owner Michael

Guptill, Alden Caple, who will direct Legally Blonde, and John Berst, Howard’s husband and the theater’s musical director, who will direct The Foreigner. According to Guptill, the process was more uplifting than challenging. “It was incredibly inspiring to see the line-up of talented actors out there anxious to bring art and drama to our stage,” he said. “And I could not have asked for a more talented and level-headed partner than Danielle for launching this highly unusual season.” The biggest challenge was for call back scenes, a time when actors are generally asked to read with another actor. Some actors had scene partners over the phone and others found other creative solutions. Howard is forging ahead knowing she can’t know what the landscape will look like come July 8, the opening date for the first show, The Foreigner, a hilarious comedy about an Englishman on vacation at a fishing lodge in Georgia. A graduate of Somersworth High School, Howard spent many years working in theatres around the country and now lives in Dover, NH, and works as a freelance director and adjunct theatre professor. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Art Teacher at BA Named MAEA Educator of the Year SOUTH BERWICK Raegan Russell, Visual Art Teacher at Berwick Academy in South Berwick, has been named the Maine Art Education Association (MAEA) Secondary Art Educator of the Year for 2020. When asked about her role within art education here in Maine, Russell said, “Coming from a kid who lived her life in the art room, I know in my bones that art gave me a clear way to interpret and handle the world at times... I challenge my students to think of themselves as artists who have the power to impact their community.” Russell has been leading student international trips, museum field trips, and collaborative projects with community programs outside of the Berwick Academy campus since joining the educational staff there. She became the 2019 art teacher delegate to Aomori, Japan, where she worked with the students in Aomori to create traditional

woodblock prints. Russell has been an active MAEA member; and her commitment and dedication to the continued advancement of art education in Maine is to be commended. Due to the epidemic, a statewide awards ceremony will be held online in the near future. “Even now in an era of social distancing and remote learning, the arts and the connections we make with our student artists will be more important than ever,”wrote Jodi Thomas, 2019 MAEA Secondary Art Educator of the Year from Thornton Academy.
KENNEBUNK The Brick Store Museum will mark the dual bicentennials of the State of Maine and the Town of Kennebunk this year. The museum recently received a major grant from the Maine Humanities Council to fund its “Century Saturdays” program, which kicks off May 2 with “16th Century Saturday.” The Century Saturdays program will run once a month (on a Saturday) from May through October, ending on October 12 with “21st Century Saturday” to ask the community “where do we go from here?” The museum has planned an immersive experience for visitors to get the chance

During college she discovered a love for musical theater and had her first summer stock experience at Hackmatack where she was cast in the ensembles for “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” and “The Sound of Music”. After college she interned at the New London Barn, where she also met her future husband and life-long collaborator, John Berst, before working at various theaters outside New England. After a decade of performing, she became interested in directing and returned to school at Indiana University to get a master of fine arts in directing. Howard and Berst, who spent several years in the midwest, moved back to the seacoast just over a decade ago. In 2017, Howard returned to Hackmatack when she was given a chance to direct “She Loves Me”. The next year she directed “Bridges of Madison County” and in 2019 “The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Night-Time,” which won the Moss Hart Award – a New England-wide award for excellence in theatre – for Hackmatack.

to see, smell, taste, hear and touch the different centuries that led to the present. Timing perfectly with Maine and Kennebunk’s dual bicentennial celebrations this year, this six-month programming schedule allows visitors and locals alike to explore our shared history in a new way. Studying one century per month allows for easy compare and contrast, observation of change, and a focused discussion about social systems and everyday life in Maine over hundreds of years. The 16th century provides a good place to begin a discussion on pre-European contact and the peoples living in the area that is now Maine (thousands of years
prior as well). While the May 2 program was supposed to be a physical event, staff has created an online program that includes speakers Dr. Arthur Anderson, archaeologist at UNE, and Tim Spahr, archaeologist with the Cape Porpoise Archaeological Alliance. In addition to the recorded talks, the museum will also offer an online pop-up exhibit to explore its collection of indigenous stone tools, and at-home activities that families can undertake together, including making 16th century foods. Online programming is free with donations accepted. Program schedules can be found on www.brickstoremuseum.org.

BUSINESS & FINANCE State Revenue Forecasting, Freezing Spending
AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills recently announced that the Consensus Economic Forecasting Commission (CEFC) and the Revenue Forecasting Committee (RFC) will convene off cycle to examine the economic ramifications of COVID-19 on state government’s revenues. The committees will meet in July 2020 and August 2020, in advance of and in addition to the statutory dates currently set for November 2020 and December 2020, respectively. The CEFC and RFC are responsible for projecting revenues that the administration and legislature then use to determine the State’s budget. “There is no question that the virus is impacting state revenues; the real question ultimately is by how much?” said Governor Mills. Department of Administrative and Financial Services (DAFS) Commissioner Kirsten Figueroa, Maine State Economist Amanda Rector, and DAFS Associate Commis-
sioner for Tax Policy Mike Allen believe that the July and August timeframe will allow for the CEFC and RFC to more accurately understand the economic ramifications of COVID-19 on Maine’s economy and the state budget, rather than attempting to gauge it earlier and obtaining a partial and inaccurate pic-
ture. Once that information is in hand, the governor will work with the legislature to determine the best path forward. Additionally, Governor Mills instructed all departments to apply an emergency basis scrutiny to spending and hiring. This includes freezing unencumbered balances for Fiscal Year
Startups Step Up STATEWIDE Maine Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD) is activating Maine’s startup and early-stage technology companies in response to the COVID-19 disaster. In collaboration with Village Capital and the Sorenson Impact Foundation, the department is identifying Maine startup companies with a product or service that may help in ways beyond immediate medical needs, such as economic disrup-
tion and recovery. Does your startup have a solution that could be adapted to help Mainers or others during this emergency? Would working directly with the state of Maine help you pay it forward? Would additional investment allow it
STATEWIDE Maine home sales and values remained positive in March. Maine Listings reported a median sales price of $227,950 for existing single-family home sales in March — an increase of 8.55 percent compared to March of 2019. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. A total of 1,124 homes changed

The governor has also prohibited state employees from traveling out of state on state business. “Similar to the mid-course adjustment we made in the sup-

rose 1.3 percent compared to March 2019. According to the National Association of Realtors, home values increased 8.0 percent across the country, reaching a national MSP of $282,500. Sales in the Northeast declined 3.0 percent, while the regional MSP jumped 8.3 percent to $300,400 comparing March 2020 to March 2019. “Real estate is an essential business and essential transactions are happening,” reports Cole. “We anticipate that the second quarter statistics will reflect this current pandemic pause; we also expect that due to the continual need for housing, the real estate industry will be positioned to help drive the economic recovery in Maine and nationally.”

Health & Fitness Teen Peer Support Text Line STATEWIDE Maine’s chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI Maine) is pleased to announce the launch of the Teen Text Support Line, a new mental health program for youth 14-20 years of age living in Maine. The text line can be reached at 207-515-8398 (TEXT). The support line operates from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. each day and provides adolescents who may need additional mental health support with a safe space to talk with another young person. Staff providing support via the line are 19-23 years of age. “NAMI Maine is focused on providing mental health support to all Mainers,” says NAMI Maine CEO Jenna Mehnert. “We saw the need to create a mental health peer support teen text line and were able to launch this new resource.”
“In this time when routines are changing more than ever, it is important for youths to have some connection to others who can understand some of the struggles and disappointments that we are experiencing,” says one Maine eighth grader. According to the 2019 Maine Kids Count Data Book (www.mekids.org), Maine’s youth have the highest rate of diagnosed anxiety in the nation and the country’s third highest rate of diagnosed depression among children aged 3-17. The Teen Text Line is not a crisis line. If you believe that you or someone you know could be in crisis, do not hesitate to connect with the Maine Crisis Line via phone or text at 1-888-568-1112. For more information, visit www.namimaine.org or contact Jenna Mehnert at 207-907-0303 or jenna@namimaine.org.
Southern Maine AIDS Walk/5K Run Goes Virtual OGUNQUIT Due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and guidelines for physical distancing, Frannie Peabody Center is moving its Southern Maine AIDS Walk/5k Run online. Originally scheduled for May 2, the Virtual Walk will now take place on Saturday, August 15. The walk is the agency’s largest annual fundraiser. Last year, the event raised over $130,000 to support direct services for people in Maine living with HIV/AIDS, as well as prevention and outreach programs. The event, which takes place at Ogunquit Beach, has been known as AIDS Walk Weekend and includes the Red Ribbon Party live auction the night before. There will now be a virtual Red Ribbon Party on May 1 at 5 p.m. hosted by Candy Manuel on Facebook Live. Check in on it, decked out in your finest red
$5M Grant to Expand Epidemiology & Lab Capacity WASHINGTON, D.C. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME) recently announced that Maine will receive $5,075,000 from the CDC in support of the state’s COVID19 response. The funding, which was provided through the CARES Act, will go towards epidemiology and lab capacity for COVID-19 diagnosis and testing. “In order for Mainers to get back to work and help our economy recover, we need widespread, accessible testing for everyone across our state,” said Pingree. “With this sizable grant, Maine’s public health
system will have increased capacity to process tests at labs and help us understand the true scope of
clothing, win contest prizes, and take part in the one-item auction! “For those who lived through the early days of the AIDS epidemic, the COVID-19 pandemic is strangely familiar, and can create a renewed sense of uncertainty and fear,” said Frannie Peabody Center’s Executive Director, Katie Rutherford. “Every year, The Southern Maine AIDS Walk/5K Run has brought people together in support of one another. During this
challenging time, it’s more important than ever to still find a way to come together, even if that means virtually.” Participants of the Virtual AIDS Walk/5K Run will be encouraged to share their virtual walk/run photos and videos via social media. More details on this digitally interactive event are available on www.peabodycenter.org/ AIDSwalk, where people can also support the event through donations.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, My computer goes to sleep every time I dust the keyboard off. I try to avoid the sleep key (it has a moon on the button) but it’s very sensitive. I always have to shut down the computer completely and turn it back on to WAKE it up. What can I do to wake the computer up? Thank you, Mary Dear Mary, I would ALWAYS shut the computer down and unplug it before doing any cleaning on it. This is to protect the computer from static electricity, which can destroy sensitive electronics. Even dusting can generate static electricity. Before you clean the computer, turn it completely off, and unplug it. If it is a laptop, unplug it and remove the battery. Now it is safe to clean your
computer. You can dust it with a damp rag, blow the dust off with some compressed air, or use a cleaning wipe made for computers. Don’t use a vacuum to clean your computer, since a vacuum cleaner generates static electricity. This will not only solve the problem of having your computer go to sleep when you don’t want it to, but also protect your computer from electrostatic damage. Elizabeth Dear Computer lady, I have just had my first and hopefully my last bout with “The Blue Screen of Death” on my HP desktop. The tech that got me back working again, feels that the AVG program I was running was responsible. I have been using AVG antivirus programs on three different com-
puters for at least five years or so and haven’t had any problems. I would appreciate your take. He recommended Avira antivirus. Look forward to your weekly columns. Tom Dear Tom, It seems like tech support people like to blame antivirus programs for a lot of computer issues, but most of the time this is just not the case, no matter what antivirus program you use. It is probably not the antivirus program in your case either, since a BSOD (blue screen of death) is almost always the result of a hardware or driver issue. If it happens again, take your computer to a local shop and get some diagnostics done. It could be anything from a bad RAM stick to a corrupt video driver. Elizabeth
Dear Computer Lady, How do I remove a program from my computer? I saw a notice to delete one of my programs because it is no longer going to be supported. Should I do that if I can find it? Rachel Dear Rachel, Yes, you can uninstall any program you want using the following directions: 1. Click on “Start” then type “Control Panel”, and click on “Control Panel” when it appears in the start menu. 2. In the Control Panel, click on “Uninstall A Program” under “Programs” (you might have to switch to category view first). 3. Find the program you want to uninstall in the list of programs, click on it once to select it, then click “Uninstall” in the menu bar.
4. Click “Yes” in the dialog box asking if you are sure you want to uninstall your program. Click “Yes” again if needed and wait while the program uninstalls. 5. When it is finished, your program will no longer be listed in the programs list, and you are free to close the Control Panel and restart your computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady:, I have an Apple iPhone. How do I get the photos from my phone to my PC? Thanks for all the help you give us. Mike Dear Mike, The easiest way to get your photos from your phone to your PC or any other device with internet access is to use iCloud. See COMPUTER page 15...

1 stick of butter 8 tablespoons
1 clove of garlic chopped finely
Our website now has a button specifically for donations. Every penny goes toward food!
1 shallot thinly sliced and chopped finely
1 small leak, thinly sliced and chopped finely 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning or mix up 1 tablespoons each of fresh parsley, oregano and chives fresh from the garden and chop finely. Salt and pepper to taste
1 cup of shredded Parmesan or Romano and Parmesan combination
Directions: 1} Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut Squash in half the long way and place in a baking dish with the cut side facing down. Add about ½ inch of water in the pan to keep it moist and bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until tender to touch. Cover with foil. 2} Place butter in cut up pieces in food processor. Add chopped
up herbs, garlic, shallots, leeks and lemon juice to the butter and process until smooth and well blended.
3} When Spaghetti squash is tender, remove all seeds from the squash. With a fork, fluff up the strands of the squash from the skin and cut the strands with a knife to bite size pieces. Once the spaghetti-like strands of squash are separated add spoonful of butter and herb mixture to the squash half pieces. Spread evenly so it will melt easily and add cheese, place on serving dish and cut into strips 2 to 3 inches wide, for easy serving. Enjoy!

Piscataqua Landscaping Thanks Healthcare Workers ELIOT Piscataqua Landscaping & Tree Service recently unveiled a special message to all area healthcare and essential workers on a new enclosed lawn maintenance trailer. The truck is getting attention and honks from others who share their gratitude as it makes the rounds to service customers throughout the seacoast. Justin Gamester, President and CEO of Piscataqua Landscaping & Tree Service, said, “We don’t have masks, gowns or face shields to donate and if we did we would. However, we do service customers that play a role in many essential fields of work all over the seacoast. These folks work tirelessly to provide for us everyday – but especially
these days – and my team and I wanted to to do something. So I went to my extremely loyal local vendors at REP Trailer in Greenland, NH, and Raitt Signs in Eliot, and we made this happen. We will be towing this around the communities that have supported us for many years and will give a few respectful honks
of the horn as a thank you when we see these folks!” The company is considered an essential business and has incorporated elevated protocols to keep its workers, customers, and community safe. They encourage you to honk back to say thank you to all those who are working to protect at this time.

Coyne Attends Master Broker Summit WELLS EXIT Oceanside Realty Broker/Owner, Rick Coyne, travelled to Orlando recently for the Master Broker Summit, an intense two-day workshop attended by some of the top real estate leadership in North America. Coyne participated in discussions focused on developing real estate professionals, company culture and marketing. Also in attendance were EXIT Realty Corp. International’s CEO, Tami Bonnell, Canadian Divisional President, Joyce Paron other top executives. Another focus of the Summit was ways in which real estate brokerages can become more involved in their local communities. A portion of every transaction fee collected by EXIT Realty Corp. Inter-
national is applied to its charitable fund. Through the Spirit of EXIT Dollar-for-Dollar Matching Program, EXIT offices and associates can raise money for local, approved, registered charities, including Habitat for Humanity, and apply to EXIT’s head office to have those funds matched from the company’s pledged pool of funds. To-date $4 million has been pledged to charity. “Participating in Master Broker Summit is an opportunity for me to work ’on’ my business, instead of ’in’ it,” said Coyne. “Learning how real estate brokerages operate in markets across the U.S. and Canada and sharing my own experiences help me to be a better leader, create a better environment for my agents and in turn, provide better service to our community.”

Teachers Donate to Those in Need YORK The members of the York Teachers Association (YTA) donated $500 to the York Community Service Association (YCSA) recently to support the local food pantry. This donation is the first in what the YTA says will be a series of donations over the next few months. “The teachers in York know how hard this time is for many families in our community. While we are working hard at home to maintain some sort of normalcy for our students, we know many families are struggling with basic needs, like food, and we want to help in any way we can,” said Bill True, York High School social studies teacher and president of the
York Teachers Association. The $500 donation from the teachers for the month of April will be followed up by a $500 donation in May and then another $500 for June for a total of $1,500 donation to YCSA. The association partners with York residents who are in need of support and services during difficult times. Money for the donations came after the YTA executive committee voted unanimously to use some of its association funding to support the charity. The York Teachers Association is the local association affiliated with the Maine Education Association and represents 97% of the teachers in the York School District.
Teacher to Enter Summer Program KITTERY Eric Waddell, Superintendent of Schools in Kittery, is proud to announce that Liz Hoyt, a Science teacher a Traip Academy, has been accepted to the ‘Teaching the Genome Generation’ summer program. The program will be hosted at Bowdoin College by The Jackson Laboratory. It will also be hosted at a second site in California. According to The Jackson Lab, health care providers will increasingly use a patient’s genome to diagnose and treat disease. Unfortunately, high school students are under-prepared as future consumers of genomic medicine. Through the Project, JAX provides high school science teachers with the skills and resources to improve genomics instruction, encourage students to pursue STEM
careers, and enhance student understanding of genomics and health. The program is supported by the National Institute of Health. Hoyt has been a Science teacher at Traip Academy since 2014 and serves as the Chair of the Science & Technology Department. Her appointment to the program was announced earlier this month by Program Director Michael McKernan.

action to this was nothing short of remarkable. She fought and beat cancer, relocated to a new home in PA, and reestablished herself, while remaining strong throughout the entire process. Her favorite past times were walking the beaches of Ogunquit with her dogs Oliver and Scarlett, as well as spending time with her other dog-loving family and friends. Pam was extremely social and enjoyed her lifelong friendships. In 2016, Pam’s cancer reemerged. Once again, the strength she demonstrated through the many radiation treatments was clearly extraordinary. A special thanks to all the family, friends, and caregivers that supported her during these times and along her journey. Pam was predeceased by her father Arthur Simonelli on January 28, 2000. Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

KENNEBUNK Why do mice make great pets? Mice are very smart. Just like a dog or cat, mice can recognize human faces and get excited when they see (and smell) their people coming. They are adept at navigating mazes and can even use their smarts to learn tricks! Like dogs, they are very treat motivated, especially if they are going to be rewarded with cheese or fruit. Mice are very loving and affectionate. Mice like to be snuggled and pet just like any other animal (although, probably a little more gently). They enjoy riding on your shoulder or sitting in your hand to snack on some veggies. They are great TV-watching and reading companions as they are happy to curl up in your lap or in your pocket for a nap! Mice don’t take up much space and are clean and tidy. They keep their sleeping area free from getting soiled or dirty from loose food or debris and may let you know when things get untidy. They tend to do their ‘business’ in designated areas of their habitat, separate from their eating and sleeping areas – some

can even be trained to use the litter box! Also like cats, they groom themselves regularly. Mice can entertain and exercise themselves in their habitats, provided sufficient space and activities. A wheel, a hidey-hole and a few ramps, ropes or shelves can keep a mouse busy for hours, all in the safe confines of his home. Mice are great first pets because they don’t require the care and commitment of a larger pet yet they can teach children how to be responsible and compassionate caregivers. Even children as young as toddlers (with parental oversight, of course) can participate in taking care of their pet mouse by feeding, preparing fresh water, or cleaning the habitat. Kids are naturally drawn to mice, as they are commonplace in cartoons and children’s books – Mickey & Minnie, Cinderella’s dressmakers, the Rescuers, Tom’s Jerry, Stuart Little, mo-

very shy ones are getting wonderful homes. Spirit, who dwelled in a cage up north for more than a year, and battled ringworm twice, is enjoying a wonderful life with a very special woman. Bently, Brianna, and Bonney, despite their shyness, have been adopted together into a very loving home. Wiley and Ranger, two very shy and fearful kitties, have each found their very own homes. It goes on and on. Recently a woman came to our shelter wishing to meet Pickles. We explained that Pickles will hide, but she didn’t care. She quietly laid down next to the chair where Pickles hid, talked gently, and slowly started petting her. The only sound in the room was Pickles’ happy purring. Needless to say, we’re thrilled that Pickles will soon be leaving for her forever home. Honey, a stray kitty needing emergency surgery, recovered quickly and has found a wonderful home. She’s doing great and is the center of her new family’s universe. Our heartfelt thanks to our volunteers, who pooled their money to help pay for her surgery – and also to several of you who mailed in a donation. How can we be anything but happy and hopeful when we see everyone rising to meet the needs of the animals, even during a pandemic! Enjoy the photo of her in her new home. Nevertheless, the vet bills continue, and so does the need to raise money. We need your help. The amount doesn’t matter, it all adds up. Please mail a check to Safe Haven Humane Society, PO Box 91, Wells, ME 04090. Friskies cat food and clumping litter is also needed. Leave it at our shelter at 1420 Post Road, next to the Wells Public Library. I think the most joyful thing about our work is watching magic unfold. It happens when people visit and find their next family member. We’re like proud parents, and want each of these kitties to have the best life. Our hearts rejoice when the right person chooses one of our kitties. It’s our reward. This is why we do this.
The thrift store provides vital income with which to pay our vet bills and other expenses.

On this day over 42 first through fourth grade students were recognized in front of an audience of parents, staff and guests. They were each recognized with a certificate for demonstrating one or more of the school’s core values in school. Those values include responsibility, honesty, trustworthiness plus compassion and respect for others. “I love celebrating student successes,” commented WES Principal April Noble. “I think it’s special that it is a tradition in all three (WOCSD) schools that began when Superintendent Daly was the principal at the high school. It’s an honor for our kids to be recognized this way.” According to the principal, all school staff members can now nominate a student demonstrating a core value for

(207) 282-4445 PUBLIC NOTICES PUBLIC NOTICE: ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS MAINTENANCE DREDGING PROJECT; NOTICE OF INTENT TO FILE AND FEDERAL CONSISTENCY DETERMINATION; HAUL ROUTE Please take notice that United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is intending to file a Natural Resources Protection Act permit application with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection pursuant to the provisions of 38 M.R.S.A. §§ 480-A thru 480-BB on or about April 29, 2020. The application is for periodic maintenance dredging of shoaled portions of the 8-foot entrance channel and the north and south settling basins of the Wells Harbor Federal Navigation Project (FNP) in Wells, Maine for multiple dredge events over a period of up to five years. USACE proposes to periodically dredge approximately 20,000 cubic yards of sandy sediment to remediate shoaling conditions and to place the sandy sediment at a nearshore site off Wells Beach, approximately one mile southward of the entrance channel. Periodic dredging is expected to take up to one month to complete between June 1 and August 15, 2020 or in the following years between May 15 and August 15. USACE proposes the following haul route for dredged materials: transit from the dredge area southward and parallel to the shore for approximately one mile and place the material at the previously-used nearshore site off Wells Beach, in an area approximately 2000 feet long by 500 feet wide. Any gear or buoys located within the dredge area or the haul route to the placement site needs to be removed prior to dredging. The dredge will monitor VHF channel #13 and #16 and can be contacted for inquiries regarding the loss of fishing gear during the dredging operation. A request for a public hearing or a request that the Board of Environmental Protection assume jurisdiction over this application must be received by the Department in writing, no later than 20 days after the application is found by the Department to be complete and is accepted for processing. A public hearing may or may not be held at the discretion of the Commissioner or Board of Environmental Protection. Public comment on the application will be accepted throughout the processing of the application. USACE has submitted to the State its determination that the proposed periodic maintenance dredging will be conducted in a manner consistent with applicable enforceable policies of the Maine Coastal Program, including pertinent standards under the Natural Resources Protection Act (38 M.R.S.§§ 480-A through 480-Z) and state water quality laws (consistency determination). The Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) review of the USACE’s submission will constitute the State’s consistency review pursuant to Section 307 of the Federal Coastal Zone Management Act, 16 U.S.C. §1456. The USACE’s submission will be filed for public inspection at DEP’s office in Portland, Maine, during normal working hours. A copy of the submission may also be seen at the municipal offices in Town of Wells, Maine. Written public comments may be sent on or before May 22, 2020 to: Robert Green, Department of Environmental Protection, Southern Maine Regional Office, 312 Canco Road, Portland, Maine 04103. For further information regarding the proposed dredging of the Wells Harbor FNP, please contact: Coral Siligato USACE Project Manager, 696 Virginia Rd. Concord, MA 01742-2751; telephone: 978-318-8012.

~ Sports ~ Special Olympics Maine Get’s Creative STATEWIDE 5,000 Maine children and adults with intellectual disabilities rely on and look forward to the 75 events offered by Special Olympics Maine each year. The athletes train hard and get excited about all of the opportunities they usually have to be seen for their abilities and not their disabilities. They look forward to seeing old friends, spending time with their team mates, traveling to other towns for training or competitions, attending the dances, staying in dorms, earning medals and ribbons, getting free health screenings, and having people cheer for them when they compete. Special Olympics Maine relies on several fundraising events throughout the year, as well as the generosity of others, in order to meet their 1.3 million dollar per year budget and to provide opportunities to their athletes. Like so many other nonprofits, the pandemic has resulted in all training and social and competitive events in Special Olympics to be canceled through June 10. This includes regional and state basketball tournaments, spring unified sports, state swimming, spring games, and the largest event of the year – the state summer games. In addition, all live fundraising events have been canceled as well.
Within minutes of announcing the cancellations, Special Olympic Maine staff (all five of them) began to brainstorm how they would continue to offer opportunities to our athletes to stay physically, mentally and emotionally fit during the quarantine, how to keep them all feeling positive and looking forward to future events. Social media has been the key so far. Through Facebook and Instagram, Special Olympics Maine is offering daily workouts, cooking classes, stress management tips, yoga, stretching, and strong mind activities. Volunteers and staff have been creating videos to share every day and have created a schedule of online events for everyone to follow. Mondays are dedicated to fundraising. For example, Special Olympics Maine is holding a raffle, selling tickets for $20 each, and the winner will receive 3 prizes – yes three – a snowmobile, a 4-wheeler, and a Sea-do. The drawing will be held October 30. Also, iff people shop through Amazon Smile, they can choose Special Olympics Maine as their charity of choice. Tuesdays are dedicated to staying positive – stress relief, meditation, finding activities that are fun and help keep your mind focused on good things. Wednesdays offer Weekly Warrior workouts where volun-
teers share workout videos of things athletes and their families can do at home. Thursdays are focused on essential workers who are Special Olympics athletes and volunteers. Friday is fun day! Several classes are offered such as for cooking or juggling. Throughout the week, Healthy Athletes Tips will be presented by Healthy Athletes Clinical Directors and students at USM and UNE, covering topics such as care of your teeth, hearing, and feet. The response has been incredible! Parents have commented that they cannot imagine how they would have gotten through this time with their child who has autism or an intellectual disability, if it were not for the activities offered to keep them busy, active, involved, and excited to see what’s coming next. Athletes are calling and messaging daily to tell how much fun they are having. Check out Special Olympics Maine on Facebook and Youtube to see for yourself! Information and activity kits can be mailed to families who do not have access to internet. If you would like to purchase a raffle ticket or make a donation, call 207-879-0489 or mail a check to Special Olympics Maine, 125 John Roberts Road, Unit #5, South Portland, ME 04106.
