Celebrating Moms At Home This Year While Mother’s Day is a special day to honor the mom in your life and spend time with your family, this year the celebrations have changed due to recent events. According to a recent survey from TopCashback.com, two-thirds of Americans (66 percent) will be celebrating or doing something special for Mother’s Day this year. The survey polled a cross-section of 1,963 adults, aged 18 and over. 66 Percent of respondents
will be at home with my family, 28 percent will be virtually meeting with family via Zoom, FaceTime, etc., and several will visit Mom while staying a safe distance away (stand six feet apart, wave through windows, etc.). A whopping 87 percent of people plan on giving mom a gift this year. While shopping at an actual store may not be an easy option this year, 78 percent of respondents plan to shop online while 22 percent plan to shop inperson at a drug store, grocery
store, etc. The top three gifts include flowers, gift cards, or a phone or video call. 47 Percent intend to spend $50 or less on the Mother’s Day gift, 38 percent plan on $51-$100. While a lavish present may seem like the perfect gift for Mother’s Day, sometimes all mom wants is something a little more simple. Moms in the survey agree most on wanting a break from the mom routine, something homemade, or a gift card.
Whether you’re at home with your family for Mother’s Day or not, here are five budgetfriendly ways to celebrate Mother’s Day at home, according to Rebecca Gramuglia, a consumer expert at TopCashback.com: Create something homemade. Moms love sentimental presents and an easy, inexpensive gift is something homemade. So whether it’s a drawing to hang on the fridge, a homeSee MOMS page 4...
Ogunquit Playhouse Cancels 88th Season OGUNQUIT Responding to the safety challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic, Ogunquit Playhouse has announced that it will halt productions on all scheduled 2020 shows, effectively cancelling its 88th season. Ogunquit Playhouse has not gone dark for a season since World War II. Playhouse leadership reached the difficult conclusion that it must cancel its highly-anticipated shows with the hope of moving them to a future season. The decision comes after weeks of careful deliberation, extensive revisions to the season’s budgets

this pandemic. Although we have cancelled our main stage productions, we will continue our mission of providing artistic content in many new ways this year, while also focusing on raising needed funds and planning for an extraordinary 2021 season. Everyone at the playhouse was excited and honored to be presenting these exceptional titles this season. Our hearts are with all the artists, actors, craftspeople, our seasonal staff and crew, who are severely impacted by the upheaval to their professional lives and livelihoods. While the months ahead still hold much uncertainty, it is our mission to be here for future generations and to preserve this beloved historic theatre, and we will do just that. Ogunquit Playhouse has weathered many storms for nearly a
century. Together we will emerge from this crisis and look forward to brighter days when we can gather again at the playhouse,” stated Bradford Kenney, Ogunquit Playhouse Executive Artistic Director. This closure also disrupts the surrounding business community that depend on the theatre as a major economic driver in the region. Over 120,000 ticket buyers visit the playhouse each
season, and in turn patronize regional restaurants, hotels, and retail establishments. Public support during this time will help ensure that the Ogunquit Playhouse continues to share transformative and entertaining shows, new works, and world premieres on its stage for future generations. For more information on how to contribute, visit www.ogunquitplayhouse.org.

and show schedules, and thoughtful health and safety planning to protect staff, crew, volunteers, visiting artists, and patrons. The historic non-profit theatre relies on the sale of tickets for 80% of its operating budget so that the cancellation will have a profound financial impact on the playhouse. Despite drastic cost-cutting measures, the organization will incur financial damages exceeding $3 million. Its focus now will turn to raising funds to ensure the financial viability of the playhouse in future endeavors. “Our commitment to the health and safety of our staff, artists, and audiences is our top priority. Although this decision is difficult and heartbreaking, we understand its necessity and are willing to do our part to stop

We miss the camaraderie of the live event, but this online auction has opened new doors,” according to Pat Robinson, Auction Chair. “Not the least of which is a broader audience, plus it is so much fun to do some competitive bidding at a leisurely pace!” “Like other non-profits, Great Works Regional Land Trust relies on its annual fundraiser to build community and financial support. Thanks to business sponsors and the hard work of volunteers, every dollar raised will go directly into continuing the work of protecting the wildlife lands and working
landscapes that make our area special,” said Executive Director Danielle Olsen. Auction participants also have an opportunity to donate to an area of need for the organization. This year, Great Works would like to raise $3,000 toward the parking area (“the mudhole”) at Negutaquet Conservation Area in North Berwick. The online auction will close at 8 p.m. on May 10, and can be found directly at www.auctria.com/auction/2020GWRLT SpringAuction. Love Rocks! WELLS Sarah Hester and her son Jackson having been sharing the love in Wells recently, as they make rock momentoes to entertain passersby. Jackson continues to collect and paint rocks which are then put in Tic-TacToe bags and placed at the end of the driveway. If you would enjoy a little free fun, take a drive down Port Road in Wells on the weekends to get your own “memory of this crazy time”. ...MOMS from page 1 made card, printed or framed photos or something you’ve knitted or sewn, these gift ideas will put a smile on Mom’s face. Bring the entertainment to your home. If you typically do something entertaining (see a musical, go to a concert, attend a sporting event, etc.) for Mother’s Day, your plans have likely changed this year. Instead, consider a family game night with classic board games or look into virtual game nights and stream games from Jackbox. If you’re leaning on the musical side of things, you can stream performances from the Met Opera in New York City or you can watch concerts from your favorite musicians on TV and social media. Make it a themed Mother’s Day. If the mom in your life loves a certain decade, movie, food or anything else, try and make it into a theme! Decorate your house with things you have, create a
themed menu (make your own pizza, ice cream sundae, etc.), curate a playlist and dress-up in a costume (‘80s theme, a spa day or pajama party). The key is to use items you already have and spend a minimal amount of money. Guaranteed you’ll have some laughs. Shop early enough and stack the savings. Does mom have her eye on a specific gift? Make sure to compare prices and stack the savings by shopping with cashback sites or cashback credit to earn a percentage back on all qualifying purchases. Shop earlier rather than later to make sure your gift arrives on time. Cook and make the house sparkle. Who doesn’t love to be pampered all day? Treat the mom in your life to a clean house and a delicious meal. These are two simple gestures that go a long way and are easy on the wallet.

“Stories of Maine: An Incomplete History” Goes Online
PORTLAND The Portland Museum of Art (PMA) is now offering a new exhibit featuring a wide array of objects and voices from its Maine Bicentennial exhibition, “Stories of Maine: An Unfinished History”. Given the inclusive and interactive nature to the exhibition, the museum is uniquely positioned to share this wealth of research, contributions, and objects from throughout the state online at www.portlandmuseum.org. Stories of Maine centers on the question: What is the story of Maine’s history and who gets to tell it? Beginning in the summer of 2019, the PMA and the Maine Humanities Council
collaborated with partners and advisors throughout the state to select 20 stories about Maine’s past and present. The resulting exhibition includes objects such as an oil lamp from the Monhegan lighthouse and a 1906 Old Town canoe, as well as artworks such as David Driskell’s painting “Pine and Moon”. To interpret these objects, 19 Mainers from a wide range of regions and backgrounds share their perspectives about how these objects reflect life in Maine. The 20th story in this exhibition is yours — through a recording studio, you can record and share your own Maine story, helping us to better understand our state.

Alphabet Hunt - Try to name one object in the backyard or along a trail that starts with each letter of the alphabet, starting with A. For example, A for acorn, B for butterfly, C for cat, etc. Air Pong - Divide family members into two groups. Each group stands on opposite sides of a table or other surface outside with hands behind backs. A polystyrene cup or small ball (ping pong ball or similar) is placed in the center between the two groups. On ‘go’ teams try to blow the cup to the opposite team’s side. Sticks, stumps, hills, puddles, rocks, jump ropes, hula hoops, and other objects can all be organized to create a series of mini-challenges. Health & Fitness Virus Helpline for Families Affected by Alzheimer’s WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Susan Collins, the Chairman of the Aging Committee, announced that the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) has set up a helpline to answer coronavirus questions for families affected by Alzheimer’s. Staffed entirely by licensed social workers, the helpline is available to answer questions in over 90 languages. “Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease to the mind and spirit, often robbing people of the golden years of their lives. It not only affects patients, but it dramatically changes the lives
of family and friends who love and care for them, said Senator Collins. “The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America continues to be responsive to the needs of Alzheimer’s patients and their families, and this helpline will serve as a vital line of communication for vulnerable members as we work to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. The helpline can assist families with questions such as: How can I keep my loved one active and engaged while at home?; Are there steps I can take to deal with the disruptions in the person’s daily routine?; What do I do if I’m feeling stressed or
overwhelmed?; What steps can I take to reduce the chances of the person being exposed to coronavirus?; What services are still available to help?; How much should I share with my loved one about the pandemic?; How can I stay connected with a loved one in a nursing home or assisted living facility that is no longer allowing outside visitors? The free helpline can be accessed seven days a week (9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends) through visiting www.alzfdn.org, and clicking on the chat box in the lower right-hand, or by calling 800-272-3900.
Banking on Help for Mask-Making! ELIOT & KENNEBUNK In different times, you might think you were hallucinating if you went by the drive-up at the bank window in Eliot and saw employees inside working at sewing machines. But in April of 2020, you can see that the bank tellers, managers, and loan officers at Kennebunk Savings Bank are making fabric masks, items now in high demand as protection against sickness. Inspired by a new non-profit that makes masks for virus protection, the seven employees at the Eliot bank branch have made 200 masks during their workday since the bank effort began earlier this month. “We have ebbs and flows in our days because See MASKS page 19...
FEMA Applications for FireďŹ ghters WASHINGTON, D.C. Following a bipartisan push, FEMA announced that they will make $100 million in emergency funding available for firefighters to purchase personal protective equipment (PPE). FEMA began to accept applications on April 28 and fire departments have until May 15 to apply for the funding. The CARES Act had included $100 million in supplemental funding for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant
(AFG) program to be used for the purchase of PPE, including for reimbursement of PPE expenses. “First responders in Maine and throughout the country are on the front lines working to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, said Senator Susan Collins. “This emergency funding will help provide firefighters with additional PPE to improve their safety while they continue to serve our communities.

WELLS We hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful spring weather and staying healthy at home. As our lives, in some ways, have become quieter and more homebased, we’re even more aware of the benefits of sharing life with animal family members. Animal adoptions have soared nationwide! Even though our shelter remains closed, you can meet our adoptable kitties by visiting www. safehavenhumanesociety.org. Once you see a kitty that calls to your heart, call us at 207-646-1611. We’ll set up an appointment for you to come visit, and our volunteers will help you learn everything about them. Whiskers and Sabrina are two beautiful long-haired kitties who are tightly bonded. Whiskers loves flopping over onto Sabrina. She happily lies there, smothered in his loving silliness. They’re lovable and affectionate once they get to know you. A video of them is on our Facebook page – Check it out! Whiskers, the black and white (pictured), is more confident

than Sabrina (grey and white). She’s still a bit fearful, but really coming along. Again and again, shy kitties have shown they blossom once adopted. Due to the pandemic, our thrift store remains closed and unable to receive regular donations. However, we’re seeking certain items for our new location in Wells at the former Cattail Farm Antiques. We especially need bookcases! If you have some to donate, please give us a call at 207229-8314. Our shelter is also in great need of canned Friskies cat food, Purina kitten chow (dry), canned Fancy Feast, and clumping litter. Cat treats, especially Temptations, are always welcome, as is catnip. We’d love some catnip plants to plant at our new location!

Animal Welfare Society KENNEBUNK Oh the weather is getting nicer, and how I long to go outside… I’m Polar and I’m your typical indoor/outdoor cat. Inside is ok, don’t get me wrong, and I’m content to curl up in a warm spot on a cool evening or look out the window on a rainy day. And of course meals are best served in the kitchen, but my very favorite place in the world is out in the fresh air. I’ve always been an indoor/outdoor cat and it truly is the way I live my best life. It’s the way to get out all my kitty energy, use my keen sense of curiosity and practice all those things cats are naturally inclined to do! In fact, one of my friends at AWS said it best and I quote, “He’s very smart and needs that open air and freedom to keep him happy and keep his mind working. I think when he’s given that outdoor access, he’ll probably be more relaxed inside his home.” Well, then why am I not a barn cat or what you humans call a feral cat? Well, I’m a socialized fellow, that’s why. I’m used to humans, and I am a friendly chap. Humans are pretty cool, after

all. And I couldn’t live without ‘em. They feed me, they keep me healthy by taking me to the vet, and they give me a safe and comfortable place to come home to. My humans don’t mind my friendliness – they like when I rub up for a quick pet or catch them on the couch for a short snuggle (though not for too long – quick as a flash I’m off on my next adventure). Humans can get quite silly with their laughter when I entertain them (you just wait – my rolling around on the floor routine is epic). I’m also known to do “zoomies” around the house, which my humans enjoy watching – it’s like a one-cat race, Olympic-style, and I always win the gold! Ball chasing and feather batting round out my comedic repertoire. It’s fun to make my humans laugh at my antics! What do I like best about my humans? I especially like them when they let me out in the morning and call me back in for the night. I appreciate that they trust me to be on my own during the day, where I am most happy.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, I just got a new laptop with Windows 10, and I don’t like the new “Edge” browser. I would like to go back to Internet Explorer, but I don’t see it on this computer. Can I put Internet Explorer on my Windows 10 computer? Thanks, Tracy Dear Tracy, Actually, Internet Explorer is already on your Windows 10 computer, you just have to know how to find it. The easiest way to do this is to press the Windows logo key on your keyboard and type “Internet Explorer”. Windows 10 will search for and find Internet Explorer, and display it in the list of search results. Once you click on “Internet Explorer” (IE) and the program opens, there will be an icon for IE on your taskbar. Right click on this icon, and click “Pin To Taskbar”. Now, when you want to open Internet Explorer, just click once on the icon on your taskbar. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have had a message on my laptop saying the administrator has disabled the update for Chrome. Since I am the admin-
istrator I would like to enable the updates. Looking at forum entries has been very disheartening as there are so many having similar problems and the advice is just too techno for this (very) senior lady. Can you make some suggestions please? Thanks a lot, Rose Dear Rose, It looks like this problem is caused by a registry error, and can be fixed by editing the registry. Since the registry holds all your computer settings, and changing the wrong setting can disable your computer, I suggest that you leave registry editing for the experts. I make registry changes for my customers quite often, but let’s see if we can find another way to update Chrome for you. I have not personally run across this issue, but I can tell you how to get the most updated version of Chrome. Simply go to Chrome’s website at www.google.com/ chrome/browser/desktop/index. html Please make sure you are at this website, and not some other website pretending to be Chrome. On this page, you will see a blue button that says “Download Chrome”. Click on that button. Take a look at the terms of service, then click the “Accept
and Install” button. A file download will start. Save the file, and when it has finished downloading, double click on the file to start the install process. This will give you the most recent version of Chrome, and while I am not certain, it just might fix your updating problem as well. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have never backed up my computer. What method do you recommend on how to do this? And once done, what is a good way (if hard drive crashes) to reinstate what has been backed up? Also, how often do you recommend backing up one’s hard drive? Thanks for all you do to help us. Jean Dear Jean, The best method for you to use to backup your computer will depend on what you use your computer for, and what you have on it for data. If you use your computer only for reading email and web browsing, and perhaps playing games, you need a good recovery image, but if you are not adding pictures and documents to your computer there is no need for an ongoing backup program. You might want to create a new image
once a year to keep it updated. If you use your computer to store data like pictures, documents, recipes, patterns, knitting directions, music, etc. you will need an ongoing backup routine. I suggest a good backup program like Acronis True Image, and an external hard drive that you plug in to do your backup, then remove it from your computer when the backup is finished so that it is safe from ransomware. Acronis can be set up to do the recovery image. It can also be setup to do the ongoing backup on a regular schedule. If you add new files every week, then backup weekly. If you only add them occasionally, set your backup to once a month. When you need to access the files on your backup, you just use the Acronis software. Select the backup that contains your files, click “Recover Files”, and follow the prompts to copy the files back to your computer. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, What would your recommendations be for a 67-year-old lady on a very limited income that’s not very tech savvy. I’ve already “been taken” and lost a lot of money in the process not knowing who to trust. You’re one that I do trust to tell me what
would be good for me to use, that won’t break the bank, and give me a sense of security. I’d like to get to writing books instead of always worrying about my computer. Kris Dear Kris, First and foremost don’t believe anyone who calls and says they have detected problems on your computer. Also, don’t believe the ads that pop up on some websites that say your computer is having problems and call the number listed for help. Both of those are scams. Don’t give anyone control of your computer unless you absolutely know who they are. If you have any doubts, don’t do it. Beyond that, have a good antivirus suite running on your computer and a good malware program. I use Emsisoft at www. emsisoft.com which protects against both viruses and malware. With those protections in place, you should be able to concentrate on your writing just like I do, and not worry about your computer security. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? People whose claim doesn’t require further review should begin receiving benefits within seven days from filing. All claims will be retroactive to the date of business closure or job separation provided on the application, back until March 15. If work was lost earlier than that due to COVID-19, claimants will be able to provide documentation to show that in the near future. Stephen R. Fleming, 55 SHAPLEIGH – Stephen R. Fleming, 55, of Shapleigh, passed away unexpectedly at his home on April 14, 2020. Stephen was born in Sanford on September 27, 1964, the son of Rev. Gordon and Lois (Randall) Fleming. He graduated from Dublin Christian Academy in Dublin, NH, before serving in the US Army. Steve married Jessica Weymouth, raising two children in Shapleigh. He attended HD Mechanical School in Orlando, FL, becoming a certified Harley Davidson Motorcycle Mechanic, then fulfilling his dream of opening his own shop, SR Cycles in Shapleigh. Steve was a quiet soul who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and motorcycles. He loved their dogs Samuel, Claudia, and Cash. More than anything, Steve loved his family and was an awesome dad. He made many memories with them, whether it be rides on the bike, ice fishing, or attending track meets. He was proud of his kids. Grace and Steve had Saturday
night bowling dates and annual Father’s Day rides; she loved riding in the sidecar. Steve spent time with Sam helping earn badges through Boy Scouts and going on camping trips with the troop. Steve was pre-deceased by his parents Gordon and Lois Fleming, and mother-in-law Sandra Weymouth. He will be missed by his wife of 22 years, Jessica (Weymouth) Fleming and their children, Samuel and Grace Fleming, all of Shapleigh; brother with whom he was exceptionally close, Timothy Fleming and his wife Laurie of Derry, NH; two sisters, Rebekah Ross of Manchester, NH, and Linda Fleming and her significant other James Church of Sanford; father-in-law Leslie Weymouth and brother-in-law John Weymouth, both of North Berwick; nephew Jeffrey Fleming and his wife Sarah and their son Timmy Two; nieces Kristin and Amanda Fleming, Kassidy Ross and Crystal Michel; numerous cousins and friends; and his longtime trusted friend and employee, Nick Harriman. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, funeral services will be held as soon as possible. Updates will be announced. Funeral and interment will be held at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale. Memorial contributions may be made to support Maine Suicide Prevention at NAMI Maine, 52 Water Street, Hallowell, ME 04347. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home in North Berwick. Condolences may be expressed at www.johnsonfuneralhomeme.com.
Paul J. Robie, 78 SANFORD – Paul J. Robie, 78, passed away April 23, 2020 at the Scarborough Veterans Home where he had been residing the last year and a half. Paul was born in Biddeford on May 13, 1941, son of Joseph T. and Elda (Guyette) Robie. He lived and attended school in Kennebunk until he was drafted into the Army in April of 1965. He was shipped to Fort Dix, NJ, for basic training and became a Medical Supply Specialist, receiving the Good Conduct medal. Paul then went to 485 Preventive Medicine Unit in Ludwigsburg, Germany, then US Army Medical Equipment Repair School at Fitzsimmons General Hospital, Denver, CO, then Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC. Paul was shipped to Viet Nam, serving in 93 Evac Hospital Long Binh and the 36th Evac Hospital Vung Tau. When Paul returned to the states, he worked retail for many years; living in California for 10 years before returning to Maine where he was employed at York Hospital in Medical Records. Paul was very active in
the Sanford/Springvale area as Chairman and Past Chairman of the Cemetery Committee, Sanford Springvale Veterans Memorial Committee, Board of Directors of Riverside Cemetery in Springvale, and a Pease Greeter for many years. He was District Treasurer in District 1 American Legion, Vice Commander American Legion Post #19 Springvale, Commander 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2016, Commander of the VFW in Sanford 2009-2001, lifetime member of the VFW Post #5744 in South Berwick, and member of the TW Cole Post #19 Springvale. Paul was a recipient of the Silver Rose Medal, Quilt of Valor 2017, and Eagle Cane 2017.
Paul is survived by two sisters Janet Robie Hooke of North Berwick and Marion MacMillan and her husband Robert of Standish; many nieces and nephews; and good friend Dale Midgley of Kennebunk. His family would like to thank all the staff members at the Veterans Home for his care. A military service will be held at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale where he will be laid to rest. Donations in his name may be made to the TW Cole Post #19, P.O. Box 801, Springvale, ME 04083. Arrangements are entrusted to the Johnson Funeral Home in North Berwick where condolences may be expressed at www. johnsonfuneralhomeme.com.

FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Super Flood Basin Pile Driving KITTERY Portsmouth Naval Shipyard will commence pile driving operations in the vicinity of Dry Dock #1 beginning the week of May 4 as part of the MILCON P310 Super Flood Basin Construction Project. The construction project was awarded November 21, 2019 to Cianbro Corporation of Pittsfield, as a firm-fixed-price contract for $157,949,610. Dry Dock #1 is the shallowest of the three dry docks at the shipyard and requires a buoyancy assist system comprised of large floodable airfilled tanks in order to dock and undock submarines. The super flood basin, similar to a navigational lock, is being constructed at the entrance of the dry dock and enables submarines to dock without the use of buoyancy assist tanks. Dry Dock #1 remains in service during construction to support the submarine maintenance schedules at the shipyard. “As in any good organization, the foundation of our suc-
cess is our people, but our crown jewels are our dry docks,” said Shipyard Commander, Capt. Daniel Ettlich. “This investment in our infrastructure enables us to operate independent of the Piscataqua River tides and optimizes our dry dock operations for years of safe and efficient use in continuing to deliver submarine readiness to the fleet.” The super flood basin directly supports the Navy’s Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP) designed to improve the efficiency of the naval shipyards to better execute maintenance and modernization of ships and submarines to provide the Navy the nation needs. The pile driving will produce higher than normal noise levels and will be conducted in a series of phases. Daily pile driving is planned for May to September, January 2021 to March, and May 2021 to July. Sporadic pile driving is planned for October to November, April 2021, and August 2021. These operations are regularly scheduled between 7 a.m. and 5

the lobby is now closed,” said Robert Fischer, branch manager. “This allows us to be productive and busy during down times and certainly makes for great conversation when customers see us at work.” The Eliot branch was inspired by the Main Street branch in Kennebunk which has been making masks since March. Fischer heard about the effort and suggested Eliot do something similar. As it happened, lead customer service assistant Anne Raitt had a direct connection to the Seacoast Mask Makers, an organization whose mission is to make as many masks as possible for care providers and service workers in the area. Her sister-in-law, Lisa Raitt, is the organizer for the Mask Makers in Eliot, which has made more than 30,000 masks for 185 organizations since it began on March 21. The partnership brought mask-
making kits to the bank. Branch employees set up stations for cutting, pinning, sewing, and ironing. They take turns in different parts of the process with proficient sewers assigned to the machines, and send the masks back to the Seacoast Mask Makers to distribute. Although the mask project began with kits, the group now has supplies they have gathered themselves. Fischer’s mother, an avid seamstress, has donated fabric and was able to get a good amount of elastic, which is one of the items in short supply now as people worldwide make and order masks. In fact, efforts at the Kennebunk Main Street branch has slowed down recently because they have had trouble finding more elastic. Masks from Kennebunk have been distributed among employees, customers, and local health care facilities, according
to Theresa McKeefrey of Kennebunk, a customer service assistant. McKeefrey was making masks at home in mid-March for anyone who asked, but the demand got too large for her. “It got so big I asked my coworkers if they wanted to help and by the next day they had ironing boards and sewing machines and buckets of fabric at the bank,” she said. Not every week has been leisurely for bank staff. When the government’s stimulus program opened, employees worked overtime to get as many loans processed as possible before the money ran out. Over a two-week period after Congress passed the stimulus package, the bank processed more loans than it typically does in a year. Places that want masks for employees, can fill out a form available at www.seacoastmaskmakers.org.

ELIOT’S 2020 ROUTE 236 CORRIDOR STUDY SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT! The Town of Eliot will soon be working with Gorrill-Palmer Engineering and Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission to conduct a study of several issues on Route 236 from Beech Road to the South Berwick town line. A very similar study was done last year on Kittery’s portion of Route 236 up to Beech Road in Eliot. The study will look at traffic flow issues, access and egress to lots on Route 236, turning problems and danger areas, possibly a center turning lane, and other issues. The Town’s TIF Committee felt it would be wise to ask frequent users of Route 236 to identify the things they view as problematic or dangerous. If you would like to share your thoughts and ideas, please email the Town Manager, Dana Lee, at townmanager@eliotme.org. We will be accepting comments through the end of May.

Getting to Know Some of Our Real Estate Professionals! Patti Fortier
Karen Rice - karen@yorkmaine.com - 207-451-3990
- pattifortier@remax.net - 207-651-7020
How long in the business of real estate, and what led you to this career? I got licensed in 2016. What led me to this career is the flexibility with setting my own schedule and still being able to be present in the kids’ lives while starting to work on my business. Especially now with all three home needing help constantly, I can’t imagine anything else.
How long in the business of real estate, and what led you to this career? I began my real estate career in 2006. I was led to a career in real estate while working in residential lending. I loved the interaction with the buyers, realtors, appraisers, and attorneys. I was often in a situation to troubleshoot problems during the transaction that needed to be resolved to get to the closing table. I had a great deal of satisfaction in seeing the end results. Several professionals stressed their satisfaction in my performance which guided me into real estate. What energizes you in real estate? I am energized by people and my clients! I enjoy meeting clients and their families, listening to their hopes and dreams, and becoming their trusted friend. What advice would you give to your teenage self? Life is difficult no matter your income! It’s what you make of it that matters. Always keep an open mind and a positive attitude. Cherish every day! Time goes by so fast. One behavior or trait that you think most attributes to your success in real estate? I LISTEN to the clients and problem solve! I go above and beyond to get to the closing table – which, in turn, proves to my clients that I can be trusted. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you and what’s a hidden talent? They don’t know I’m happiest hiking in the woods or on the water! And I am mentally and physically stronger than I appear. Best advice you were ever given? When people are nasty be nice! There is usually a reason for their disposition that has nothing to do with you.
What energizes you in real estate? Making my own money and helping people. What advice would you give to your teenage self? Start in real estate sooner. One behavior or trait that you think most attributes to your success in real estate? I always show up. Best advice you were ever given? Don’t compare yourself to others. Three words friends use to describe you? Focused, dependable, dedicated.

How long in the business of real estate, and what led you to this career? I have been in the real estate business for 10 years now and wanted to get my license long before that, but never took the jump until I got laid off from my last employer. Wish my employer had laid me off 10 years before that... haha!
Three words friends use to describe you? Loyal, honest, kind.
What energizes you in real estate? I really love meeting new people and making lasting friendships. Their reaction when they are handed the keys to their first home or a check from the sale of their home is so rewarding.
Susan Michaels - susan@yorkmaine.com - 207-205-3060 How long in the business of real estate, and what led you to this career? Been in this business for 34 years. At the time I was a widow and I enjoyed the flexibility of my real estate schedule. Have enjoyed every day of my real estate career!
What advice would you give to your teenage self? Don’t feel any dream is unreachable. Through hard work, you can achieve the golden nugget. One behavior or trait that you think most attributes to your success in real estate? Patience.
What energizes you in real estate? Finding the perfect property for my buyers and getting the best price for my sellers. Love a happy closing. What advice would you give to your teenage self? Study more and pay attention to the folks that have been around a long time. You don’t know it all right now, you just think you do.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you and what’s a hidden talent? I’m a very shy person. Hidden talent? In baseball I use to bat lefthanded and throw righthanded, but could also bat righthanded and throw left handed. In fact, they had me switch throwing the ball in order to strike a batter out once in Little League... haha!
One behavior or trait that you think most attributes to your success in real estate? Optimism and the willingness to “hear” what my clients are saying.
Best advice you were ever given? You’re doing great work and there’ll be a golden nugget for you at the end of the road.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you and what’s a hidden talent? I am actually an introvert (social distancing works for me) and quite boring. My hidden talent is that I listen and people (even people I don’t know) talk to me and tell me their deepest secrets.
Three words friends use to describe you? Generous, selfless, funny.
Best advice you were ever given? Stay in real estate because you love it. Three words friends use to describe you? Kind, optimistic, loyal.
In appreciation of all the Mother’s who have taken on the many challenges thrust upon you! We couldn’t have done anything we do without YOU, YOUR SUPPORT, GUIDANCE & LOVE! Thank you!
