‘Quilts of Valor’ Honor Maine and New Hampshire Veterans BerWICK – By Joyce Amend, staff writer Tiny pieces of fabric are intricately hand-crafted into beautiful quilts depicting patriotic themes. These breathtaking creations, called ‘Quilts of Valor’, demonstrate true labors of love - tributes to our courageous and brave veterans who have sacrificed for our country. ‘Quilts of Valor’ are part of a national project that honors those who fought in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm. The project’s mission is to present the quilts to those who have served our country, as a means of comforting and healing and to cover all those service members and veterans touched by war. Over 98,500 quilts have been given since the program started some ten years ago.

A small sampling of the many quilts that were displayed.

On Sunday, over 34 quilts were displayed at the American Legion Post 47 and presented to deserving veterans from Maine and New Hampshire, including York, South Berwick, Ber-

wick, North Berwick, Dover, Farmington, Somersworth, Rollinsford and other local towns. A room gathered with friends and families were in attendance to pay tribute to those

wounded at war… wounds that were either seen or unseen. The quilts served as a tangible way of saying: ‘Thank you for your service, sacrifice and valor for our country’.

Lisa Lapierre, owner of Village Quilt Shop in Berwick, Maine, was the primary organizer of the project, now, locally, in its second year. Opening the ceremony, Lapierre addressed those who have served in the past and those who are currently serving today. “I would like to thank each and every one of you for the sacrifices made to serve and protect us and our country. God Bless America”. According to Lapierre, the Quilts of Valor are stitched with love, prayers and healing thoughts. Combat troops who have been wounded or touched by war are awarded this tangible token of appreciation. The exquisite quilts were lined up like soldiers as Bill Robinson, director of the American See QUILTS page 5...

dren’s book release concert with Sammie Haynes. The free event is in celebration of the new book, “The River in Your Town,” a song written by Haynes and illustrated by the 2012 second grade students of Central School in South Berwick. Two years ago, Central School art teacher Casey Everett worked with the then second graders to create collage illustrations for the lyrics to Haynes’ song, which were very familiar to the children. “Sammie’s song, ‘The River in Your Town,’ has long been a favorite at Central School,” said Kate Smith, a music teacher who coordinated the project. “We sing it in the classrooms, hum it in the hallways, and belt it out each year as the opening for our Hike through History.” The South Berwick Strawberry Festival granted funds to start the project, which received a boost when Deidre Randall, CEO of Peter E.
