Meteorologist Jason Nappi to Discuss Recent Storms

SOUTH BERWICK -

Since 2016, students from Marshwood High School have hosted students from Copenhagen, Denmark each October in their homes and in their school.

This past April, for the first time, Marshwood students traveled to Copenhagen to stay with students from Rysensteen Gymnasium. During the week, they toured the city and region’s cultural landmarks, attended school, and participated in RysMUN, Rysensteen’s annual Model UN.

At RysMUN ‘24, nearly 100 students from 12 different countries – including 16 students from Marshwood – joined 400 Rysensteen students on committees that explored solutions to some of the

KENNEBUNKPORT -

The Kennebunkport Historical Society (KHS) is pleased to announce a special event featuring meteorologist Jason Nappi of News Center Maine.

On Wednesday, May 15 at 2 p.m. at the historic Town House School, Nappi will engage attendees in an exploration of the recent storms and weather phenomena that have affected the state this past winter season.

With Maine’s recent coastal storms and flooding capturing public attention, Nappi’s presentation promises to provide invaluable insight into the cause of

these events. Drawing upon his extensive experience, including his tenure as chief meteorologist for KADN/KLAF-TV in Louisiana, Nappi will offer comparisons between current weather events and historical occurrences in the Kennebunkport area.

During his time along the Gulf Coast, Nappi navigated through one of the most challenging hurricane seasons on record, alongside various other weather emergencies such as tornado outbreaks and ice storms. His expertise extends beyond the realm of television, with notable roles at prominent news sta -

tions across the United States, from WMTW-TV in Portland to WPIX-TV in New York City.

In recognition of his dedication and proficiency, Nappi was awarded the prestigious American Meteorological Society Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (AMS CBM) designation in 2013. The accolade underscores his commitment to excellence in meteorological knowledge and communication.

A graduate of the State University of New York at Oneonta with a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology, Nappi’s passion for weather, particularly

tracking nor’easters, is palpable. He also finds joy in the culinary arts, with a penchant for crafting homemade pizza.

“We are thrilled to welcome Jason Nappi to Kennebunkport for what promises to be an enlightening and engaging discussion,” said Kristin Haight, Executive Director at KHS. “As our community grapples with the impacts of recent storms, Nappi’s expertise offers valuable perspectives that will deepen our understanding of weather patterns and their historical context.”

Marshwood Students Attend Model UN in Copenhagen A

world’s greatest challenges, including minority rights, climate change, and gender inequality.

Marshwood senior Annika Oberg, recognized as the “Outstanding Delegate” of her committee, says, “RysMUN provided teenagers the opportunity to exchange information about our cultures with people our own age.” Senior Leah Cavanuagh, who received “Honorable Mention” recognition in her committee, adds, “RysMUN helped me practice my public speaking and problem solving skills. And it was so cool to meet and work with students from around the world.”

At the opening ceremony, Martin Lidegaard, Denmark´s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, declared his hope in this generation’s ability to work together. And in his opening speech

Anders Schultz, Rysensteen’s

Head of Education, encouraged the student delegates to embrace the experience. “During the next couple of days, as you discuss and negotiate political solutions, remember this: As human beings we may, at times, act according to narrow self-interest, but we are just as capable of adhering to the highest ideals of cooperation and tolerance. It is a choice we make,”

he said.

Beyond the Model UN, the experience in Copenhagen is designed to be a cultural exchange: a week full of learning, collaboration, and new friendships across countries. Visiting students live with Rysensteen families and learn alongside their Rysensteen friends during the day. “The home stays allowed us to con-

nect with Danish students on a deeper level and experience their daily routines, which were faster paced in comparison to our rural life in Maine,” says Oberg. And while they are exposed to cultural differences, the students discover the ties that bind.

Fix-A-Bike Workshop at KFL

KENNEBUNKThe Kennebunk Free Library (KFL) is pleased to welcome back the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, who will be presenting their Fix-A-Bike program on Monday, May 20 at 5:30 p.m. The Coalition invites the public to “be their own mechanic” by spending the day learning how to maintain their bike, fix a flat,

pump up a tire, change a chain or cable, make shifting adjustments, and more in a hands-on learning experience.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own bicycles and be prepared to get dirty. The event will be held outdoors, but may move inside in the case of inclement weather. Should the program need to move inside, participants

~ News ~

are asked to be prepared to share a bike with another person for the hands-on portions of the day.

The Fix-A-Bike program is offered to the public ages 13 and up. The program is also free and wheelchair accessible. As space is limited, the KFL asks all to register through the library calendar at kennebunklibrary.org.

The Kennebunk Free Library is located at 112 Main Street in Kennebunk. For more information, email kfl@kennebunklibrary.org or call 207-985-2173.

The event is open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to arrive ahead of time to secure seating. The Town House School is located at 135 North Street in Kennebunkport. For more information, email khaight@kporths.com or call 207-967-2751.

AFIO May Meeting: Combat Photojournalist

KENNEBUNKThe next meeting of the Association of Former Intelligence Officers (AFIO) will take place on Saturday, May 18 at 2 p.m. in Kennebunk High School’s Economos Lecture Hall, 89 Fletcher Street in Kennebunk. The meeting will feature Jonathan Alpeyrie, a combat photojournalist who was born and raised in France and who has covered 14 wars to date. The program will delve into whether the United States and its allies in the Western world will continue to uphold their moral high ground in the global arena.

In an era marked by rapid change and perceived decline, the world’s view of the U.S. is shifting, evoking less admiration. This shift is particularly

Jonathan Alpeyrie

evident in the geopolitical landscape, with significant movements akin to tectonic plates: the ascendancy of Asia, Africa’s shifting focus away from the West, a resurgent Russia, and a Middle East in the throes of nation-state reconfiguration. Mr. Alpeyrie will provide insights into how the U.S. can navigate these changes, preserving its influence while adapting to evolving global dynamics. His analysis will spotlight regions such as Haiti, the Middle East, Ukraine, and Mexico.

The AFIO meeting is open to the public and will commence at 2 p.m. Following the presentation, there will be a questionand-answer session. For more information, visit www.afiomaine.net.

Obie and Danica arrived at Safe Haven as examples of man’s cruelty to animals. They came from two separate households.

Obie arrived beaten, both physically and mentally. His battle-scarred face bore the marks of a tomcat defending his turf. His ear was mangled and infected, his teeth were broken off and worst of all, a bullet was lodged in his leg. Covered in dirt and ticks, Obie looked at Safe Haven’s volunteers

with his sad eyes, fearing that this would surely be the end of him.

Actually, it was a new beginning! Safe Haven arranged for surgeries to treat Obie’s ear, fix his teeth, and remove the bullet. As Obie slowly healed, he began to relax and was socialized by the shelter’s Farmhouse team.

Next, Safe Haven answered a call to save a cat named Danica, who was rescued by an organization that could not keep her.

been locked in a filthy garage to be a mouser. She was left there with no care or socializing for 12 horrific years. It is difficult not to cry when thinking about the neglect, ignorance and brutality Danica must have suffered.

The garage was so filthy and mouse infested, Danica had no clean place to rest or sleep. She lived in the dark rafters, alone, year after year after year. No one even knew she existed, save for the man who kept her there.

During their time at Safe Haven, Obie and Danica shared a lovely room at the Farmhouse, becoming friends and healing together. Obie now trusts those he is now familiar with, and happily accepts love and pets. Danica is not quite over her trauma yet, and is still afraid to let anyone touch her. She is simply shy; guarded, not aggressive. Danica just needs more time to heal from her traumatic past, and Safe Haven knows she will indeed recover!

Now, both kitties have been moved to another room that allows them to enjoy the shelter’s wonderful, screened-in porch.

Both kitties are happy to enjoy sunbathing together. They are a beautiful pair of kitties and deserve only the very best care.

Danica is a little lame in her front leg, but gets around fine. She is 14, healthy and loves Obie, who has become her protector. If anyone gets too pushy with Danica, Obie hisses to remind them that she is his friend. He is her ideal “big brother.”

Obie is only about five, but has arthritis in his hind leg and hip, where the bullet was lodged.

He is a great big fellow who deserves kindness, love, protection and companionship.

Safe Haven would love to see Obie and Danice adopted together. Those who may be home often, have a sunny spot, love cats, and admire the courage these kitties have shown to survive the worst of life, can apply to adopt Obie and Danica today.

Come visit the kitties at the shelter, 1420 Post Road in Wells, open weekdays 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., weekends by appointment.

Bipartisan Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act

NATIONWIDE -

Senator Angus King is cosponsoring bipartisan legislation designed to protect children and teens online. The Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0) strengthens and modernizes provisions in the original Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by updating privacy laws, cracking down on harmful data collection and holding Big Tech companies accountable for harm and manipulation of children online.

In 1998, the original Children’s Online Privacy Act (COPPA) was signed in law, establishing basic privacy protections, including parental consent requirements to protect users under 13 years of age. While this legislation took major steps toward safeguarding children’s personal information online, this law predates smartphones and the modern internet – including tracking, algorithms, and other potentially harmful advancements.

“As the online environment evolves, it’s critical that we update how we protect our children from consuming online content that could be detrimental to their development and safety,” said Senator King. “The bipartisan, bicameral Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act will ensure that our children are guarded from pervasive tracking and targeting, often used by companies or bad actors looking to manipulate our young family members. Maine has a strong tradition of supporting digital literacy and learning, and this bill will act as a backstop for the online safety of our children.”

The bipartisan bill is co-

sponsored by Senators Edward Markey (D-MA), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Maria Cantwell (DWA), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Laphonza Butler (D-CA), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Mike Crapo (RID), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Ben Ray Luján (D-NN), Joe Manchin (D-WV), Gary Peters (D-MI), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Peter Welch (D-VT), and Ron Wyden (D-OR). Organizations supporting COPPA 2.0 include the AASA, The School Superintendents Association, American Federation of Teachers, Association of Educational Service Agencies, Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO), Consortium for School Networking, Council of the Great City Schools, National Association for Pupil Transportation, National Education Association, National Rural Education Association, National School Boards Association, Public Interest Privacy Center, and Public Knowledge.

Lithium-Ion Battery Resources Educate Consumers about Fire Risk

NATIONWIDE -

Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly found in many devices used today, from smartphones, laptops, and tablets, to micromobility devices such as e-bikes, e-scooters, and electric vehicles, among countless other devices. As use of these items has grown, so too, has the number of fires associated with them.

This May, National Electrical Safety Month focuses on the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries and ways people can stay safe when using, charging, and storing devices that are powered by these batteries. The annual campaign is sponsored by the Electrical Safety Foundation (ESFI), which raises awareness of potential home electrical hazards, the importance of electrical fire safety, and the safety of electrical workers, each May.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)is actively supporting the campaign in coordination with ESFI, providing free safety information and resources to residents to help reduce the risk of injury and damage to property when storing and charging lithium-ion batteries in devices. Firefighters and other first responders are encouraged to use these materials in their public outreach efforts.

“Lithium-ion batteries power the lives of millions of people every day, but what many consumers may not know is that these batteries can pose a fire risk if they are used or recharged improperly, are damaged, or fail to operate safely,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA. “During Electrical Safety Month, NFPA is taking

MCEC Celebrates One Year Anniversary

STATEWIDE -

The Maine College of Engineering and Computing (MCEC), an innovative institution under the University of Maine Systems (UMS) TRANSFORMS Initiative, recently celebrated its first year of successful operation. MCEC, established through a grant from the Harold Alfond Foundation, has emerged as a beacon of modern education, addressing the evolving needs of Maine’s workforce and economy.

“We are advancing cutting-

edge engineering and computing innovation and technology,” said Joan Ferrini-Mundy, University of Maine President and University of Maine System Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation. “The Maine College of Engineering and Computing is poised to support the demand for thousands of new engineering and computing graduates who will continue to push the boundaries of research and innovation in the state of Maine and beyond.”

action to help educate the public about ways they can protect their lithium-ion battery-powered devices and vehicles and safeguard their families and property.”

Founded in 1896, NFPA is a global, self-funded, nonprofit organization devoted to eliminating death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire, electrical and related hazards. The association delivers information and knowledge through more than 300 consensus codes and standards, research, training, education, outreach and advocacy. NFPA also provides important information, materials, and trainings for firefighters and first responders to learn how to safely deal with emergency situations involving alternative fuel passenger vehicles, trucks, buses, and commercial fleet vehicles that use lithium-ion-batteries.

The mission of ESFI is to prevent electrically-related injuries, deaths and fires while saving lives and property through public education and outreach.

ahead as these relationships develop further, the programs grow and more opportunities arise.”

Leading the college is Giovanna Guidoboni, dean of MCEC, with colleagues who are collaborating on steering the college towards excellence in education and innovation. By bringing together the fields of computing and engineering, the college is providing a holistic approach to preparing students for the demands of today’s job market.

MCEC serves as a statewide hub for engineering and computing disciplines, bolstered by partnerships with UMaine’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and USM’s Department of Engineering. Enrollment has grown by 3% overall and nearly 10% for master’s and doctoral programs from Fall 2022 to Fall 2023. Mechanical engineering boasts the largest

enrollment across the University of Maine System. The Data Science and Engineering program (MS) has surged by nearly 300% in two years. Additionally, programs like Surveying Engineering Technology rank among the nation’s top two. New academic offerings include USM’s Industrial Engineering program (BS), an undergraduate concentration in Mechanical Engineering focused on Offshore Wind, and a graduate program in Surveying Engineering Technology at UMaine, expanding workforce development opportunities.

“We have made tremendous progress in fostering collaboration across our universities and programs,” said Jacqueline Edmondson, University of Southern Maine President. “I am proud of the efforts of our faculty and I fully expect we will see even more innovation in the years

“It’s amazing what we have achieved in just one year. We have launched new programs and concentrations that broaden learning opportunities across the system,” said Guidoboni. “We have developed innovative programs to reach younger students in area K-12 schools, helping them to explore opportunities at MCEC. We have also forged important partnerships with indus-

YORK RESIDENTS

NO ON 64

This short term rental (STR) ordinance is bad for York

No STR study was done as called for by the 2022 Town Comprehensive Plan

Town’s own data showed very few isolated issues with STRs in the past 7 years

Town’s proposed budget wastes $1 million+ on a global company for STR monitoring

Town staff and budget will be overwhelmed with 900 inspections and disputes

Town will be burdened with lawsuit costs due to a lack of “grandfather” provisions

Maine Housing Authority study showed rentals are not the reason for the affordable housing crisis in York

York will be the only town in Maine to ban nearly all firepits

Weaponizes neighbor against neighbor, and wastes police, fire, and town staff’s time

We recommend rejecting 64 and forming a committee of diverse stakeholders to further study this topic and work together to develop practical solutions!

where he was an ROTC Corps of Cadet Commander.

Windol began his Air Force career after graduating from Texas A&M and entering pilot training. As a 23-year veteran of the Air Force, Windol spent most of that time as a pilot, flying first B-52 bombers and then FB-111s. During his three tours in the Vietnam War, he flew over 500 missions earning numerous commendations and medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, which is awarded for heroism or extraordinary achievement during aerial flight.

It was also at Texas A&M where he met the love of his life, Sondra Nicole Covey Weaver. Married 58 years, they lived

around the country in various Air Force towns until finally settling in York, when Windol was assigned for a second time to Pease Air Force Base in 1980. After retirement from the Air Force in 1987, Windol worked various jobs to pass the time, from making sandwiches as he wisecracked with friends at the Lunch Box on Route 1, to manning a desk as a stockbroker

in Portsmouth, NH.

In 1990, Windol was elected to the York Budget Committee, where he found the rewarding public service role that eventually led him to run for the Maine State Legislature, representing York. Well-known for his campaign signs that read “Leave it to Weaver,” he served four terms as a State Representative from 2006 to 2014, working tirelessly for his constituents. Windol was always the first to arrive at the State House and had a perfect attendance/voting record.

In addition to Sondra, who still resides at their home on Southside Road, he is survived by two sons, Kevin of Lancaster, PA, and Kyle of York; and four grandchildren in college and high school: Maxwell Weaver, Stella Blue Weaver, Sophie

Weaver, and Lucilla Weaver. He also leaves behind his sister Kay Fleming, youngest sister Peggye Thornburg and brother-in-law Frank Thornburg; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.

Despite witnessing troubling scenes of war, Windol was always chipper. Walking doorto-door while campaigning during election season, he hailed residents with his signature Southern accent, sharp wit, and big smile. Windol credited his happy disposition to his youngest sister Peggye, who thrived in life despite the crutches and braces she has worn since childhood from the effects of Polio. As he met with residents while campaigning, he was at times heard to say, “If that’s your biggest problem, you’re doing alright!”

YCCAC Seeks Drivers for Pilot Program

YORK -

The York County Community Action Committee (YCCAC) was recently awarded a grant through the Maine Department of Transportation’s Workforce Transportation to launch a new pilot program. The project involves the creation of an innovative worker/driver initiative, through which Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNS) employees will be trained and employed by YCCAC to operate commuter vehicles.

The committee will explore the process of having shipyard workers become parttime employees for YCCAC. PNS workers will get paid to

drive the vehicles to and from their full-time work at the Shipyard. The new service will be eligible for the Transportation Incentive Program (TIP) for Shipyard employees who ride the buses to work.

The goals are to increase convenience for employees traveling to the shipyard while helping to relieve congestion in York County, particularly in downtown Kittery.

Drivers do not need to have a commercial driver license (CDL) but some commercial driving experience is helpful. Those interested in exploring this new service, can email Kim Engel at kim.engel@yccac.org or call 207-459-2928.

Over the years, SCC has traveled and performed though Hungary, Italy, France, England, and Scandinavia, sharing American music throughout Europe. SCC sings because music has the power to heal and unite – qualities that benefit individuals, communities, and even countries. Whether at home or far away, music bonds, singer to singer and stranger to stranger.

“Where Maine Reads” at Library, in Stores

KENNEBUNKPORT -

“Where Maine Reads” is a large-format book of photographic portraits and personal essays that capture the joy, wonder and benefits of reading, especially in those special places where Mainers of all ages – some famous, some not – like to read, such as porches, bars, boats, hammocks, and yes, even bathtubs. The book features 50 Mainers representing a diverse range of ages, professions, geography, race, and culture.

The brainchild of freelance photographer and graphic artist Buddy Doyle of Gardiner, in collaboration with Steve Price, “Where Maine Reads” showcases both nationally recognized Maine writers, as well as everyday individuals spanning a spectrum of professions: teachers, firefighters, high school and college students, librarians, business leaders, and shop owners.

The book is on sale at independent bookstores and at Graves Memorial Library, 18 Maine St., Kennebunkport. All proceeds benefit Maine Public’s statewide literacy programs. The staff at Graves invite the public to stop by and pick up a copy of the book. The book makes for a great gift idea, or as a keepsake! For more information, visit www.graveslibrary. org and www.mainepublic.org/ where-maine-reads.

Cape Breton Fiddling in West Kennebunk

WEST KENNEBUNK -

Young Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, fiddler Doug Lamey and pianist Neil Pearlman bring the compelling, driving sounds of the island’s music to West Kennebunk on Sunday, May 19. Their performance is part of the long-running “Concerts in West K!” series.

Limited-Edition Prints to Benefit OMAA, Doctors

OGUNQUIT -

The Ogunquit Museum of American Art (OMAA) is pleased to partner with online retailer Artspace to introduce “Sleeper with Signs,” an exclusive variable edition of risograph prints with hand-colored drawings by artist Anthony Cudahy. Proceeds from the sale of “Sleeper with Signs” will benefit OMAA and Doctors Without Borders.

This new series of prints by Cudahy comes with a copy of the artist’s first comprehensive monograph by Monacelli Press, “Spinneret,” published to accompany his current solo exhibition at OMAA, now on view through July 21.

Anthony Cudahy is known for his evocative figurative paintings whose tender scenes reveal the nuanced complexities of life. In masterful compositions, he creates a world for unspoken stories, intimate moments, and romantic gestures with diverse references from news footage and family photographs to Renaissance paintings. Personal and poetic, Cudahy’s figures coalesce with the atmosphere of their environments in fluid brushstrokes.

To purchase a print, visit www.artspace.com. For more information, visit www.ogunquitmuseum.org.

2011, Lamey is carrying on a family tradition of music that extends back to his grandfather, Bill Lamey. The senior Lamey was a renowned fiddler and a major force in playing, recording, and broadcasting Cape Breton music. He continued his musical activities even after he took his family to Boston in the early 1950s. Doug grew up steeped in the sounds and traditions of the Cape Breton diaspora in Boston and, in a reversal of his grandfather’s path, relocated to the island over a decade ago. He is deeply involved in the Cape Breton musical community. Since moving north, he has released two CDs: “A Step back in Time” in 2011, and “True North” in 2023.

Pianist Neil Pearlman will accompany Lamey. Pearlman

is a multi-instrumentalist, step dancer and host of the TradCafe podcast. He has been called a “vital and distinctive voice in contemporary traditional music” and “a force to be reckoned with.” Pearlman is best known for his groundbreaking approach to the piano in Celtic music. He has appeared at major festivals across North America and Europe including the Newport Folk Festival, Celtic Connections in Glasgow, Celtic Colours in Cape Breton, the Orkney Folk Festival, and has recorded, performed or otherwise collaborated with such artists as Natalie MacMaster, Darol Anger, Seamus Egan, Alasdair Fraser and many more.

“The atmosphere was electric as students and staff participated in improv events,” said New School Business Director MaryBeth Luce. “Fritz Grobe’s approach to creativity and his message about continued curiosity inspired everyone in attendance. Pre-Dead Social Club

To Host “Death Over Drinks”

STATEWIDE -

KENNEBUNK -

New Hampshire’s The Pre-Dead Social Club is hosting a Kennebunk event, “Death Over Drinks: A DieA-Logue.” The event will be held at gourmet grocery store The Elective on Tuesday, May 14, 5:30-7 p.m.

neighbor or their neighbor’s neighbor or just come solo!” At each event, participants share stories and various points of view in response to an ice breaker question.

The mission of The PreDead Social Club, which recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, is to cultivate multi-generational communities interested in having compassionate conversations about death, dying and endof-life, making it a bit easier, less burdensome, and more tenderhearted long before a lifelimiting or terminal diagnosis arises. The facilitated event occurs monthly and offers a chance to explore topics related to death, dying and the eventual end-of-life. The Pre-Dead Social Club was born because death doula Laura Cleminson realized there are people out there who want to discuss the one thing everyone has in common – death – but do not have anyone talk to, or know where to find others who feel the same way.

“My experience over the past year as a ‘Death Over Drinks’ participant and facilitator has only affirmed for me the club’s premise: that there really are people in every community who want to connect with others in order to transform what can often be a very solitary journey into a shared dialogue,” said Tanya Alsberg, Kennebunkport resident and co-host for May 14 event. “Laura and I are excited to bring the Pre-Dead Social Club’s approach to conversations about our mortality to southern Maine and to expand this community to a new area.”

“At every ‘Death Over Drinks,’ we welcome folks... who want to discuss the thing we all have in common – that we are all going to die someday,” said Cleminson. “We encourage participants to bring a significant other, a friend, their

irreversible harm to brain development in children. To protect children and families, the Biden Administration has committed to replacing every lead pipe in the country. The recent announcement, funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and available through EPA’s Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF), takes another major step to advance this work. The funding builds on the Lead Pipe and Paint Action Plan and EPA’s Get the Lead Out Initiative.

Lead exposure disproportionately affects communities of color and low-income families. The total funding announced through this program to date is expected to replace up to 1.7 million lead pipes nationwide, securing clean drinking water for families across the United States.

Working collaboratively, EPA and the State Revolving Funds are advancing the Administration’s Justice40 Initiative, ensuring that 40% of overall benefits from certain federal investments flow to disadvantaged communities that are marginalized by underinvestment and overburdened by pollution.

“The science is clear, there is no safe level of lead exposure, and the primary source of harmful exposure in drinking water is through lead pipes,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. “President Biden understands it is critical to identify and remove lead pipes as quickly as possible, and he has secured significant resources for states and territories to accelerate the permanent

The Pre-Dead Social Club offers a variety of opportunities for discussion and connection throughout the year, including the upcoming “We Wish We Knew That!,” a thought-provoking roundtable discussion between healthcare professionals, caregivers, and audience members about the roles everyone plays when it comes to health and receiving whole-person care.

“We Wish We Knew That!” will take place on Monday, May 20, 6-8 p.m. at 3S Artspace in Portsmouth, NH. Tickets for “We Wish We Knew That!” are $10 per person.

removal of dangerous lead pipes once and for all.”

“Our goal is simple, yet essential: to assure that everyone has clean, safe drinking water. That’s why identifying and replacing lead service lines is crucial; it can protect our communities, especially the most vulnerable, from lead exposure,” said EPA Regional Administrator David W. Cash. “New England has some of the oldest housing stock in the country, and no one – no matter where they live –should have to worry about lead in their drinking water and what comes out of the tap.”

“We know there is no safe level of lead consumption, especially for children. And while Maine was decades ahead of the nation on banning lead pipes and plumbing fixtures, thousands of lead service lines are still in use across the state,” said Senator

Angus King and Representatives Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden, adding, “... this $28 million federal investment will help identify and replace remaining lead pipes across Maine so we can eradicate this known health threat for good.”

“The Maine CDC remains committed to assisting Public Water Systems with identifying and replacing any lead service lines that may still be present across the State,” said Dr. Puthiery Va, Director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention. “The U.S. EPA funding is available to Public Water Systems in Maine to support that important work.”

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is investing $15 billion to identify and replace lead service lines across the United States. The law mandates that 49% of funds provided through the DWSRF General Supplemental Funding and DWSRF Lead Service Line Replacement

Funding must be provided as grants and forgivable loans to disadvantaged communities. EPA projects a national total of 9 million lead services lines across the country, based on data collected from the updated 7th Drinking Water Infrastructure Needs Survey and Assessment. The funding announced will be provided specifically for lead service line identification and replacement and will help every state and territory fund projects to remove lead pipes and reduce exposure to lead from drinking water.

Alongside the funding announced, EPA is also releasing a new memorandum that clarifies how states can use this and other funding to most effectively reduce exposure to lead in drinking water. Additionally, EPA has developed new outreach documents to help water systems educate their customers on drinking water issues, health impacts of lead exposure, service
