help young artists over a broad spectrum of arts: visual art, music, dance, theatre, culinary art, photography, videography/ film, poetry and design. They help by providing some, or all, mentoring, materials and/or lessons and workshops. The Englands do this through a nonprofit called “Continuum Arts Collective. The Collective took on the status of 501(c)(3) last year with the help of an all-volunteer board. Jen England teaches in Multiple Pathways, an alternative education program for

challenged teens at Noble High School in North Berwick. She comes in contact with a lot of teens who want to be artists but are limited by lack of materials, or have no access to lessons or support. These teens may also live in isolated rural areas, where access to resources ,like those available in an urban areas, is not possible. As a teacher, Jen has seen the change in students when they are given arts opportunities: “When the artist in a student is honored, often everything falls into place – their grades go up

History of Mothers’ Day Celebration Mother's Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May. It complements similar celebrations honoring family members, such as Father's Day, Siblings Day, and Grandparents Day. In the United States, celebration of Mother's Day began in the early 20th century. It is not related to the many celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years. The modern holiday of Mother's Day was first cel-

ebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. St Andrew's Methodist Church now holds the Inter-

Marty said: “There's a lot of talent and promise among the youth of our area and they deserve our support.â€? The Englands see other special programs provided by schools for students, such as sports for athletes, chorus and band for musicians. “But for the student who is a non-conformist, who wants to make an individual artistic statement, there isn't a

national Mother's Day Shrine. Her campaign to make "Mother's Day" a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Ann Jarvis had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother's Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honor all mothers, because she believed that they were "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world". In 1908, the US Congress rejected a proposal to make Mother's Day an official holi-

day, joking that they would also have to proclaim a "Motherin-law's Day". However, owing to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, by 1911 US states observed the holiday, with some of them officially recognizing Mother's Day as a local holiday, the first being West Virginia, Jarvis' home state, in 1910. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. Although Jarvis was successful in founding Mother's Day, she became resentful of the commercialization of the holiday. By the early 1920s, See MOTHERS page 16...
