“Thank You” to Frontline Workers and Their Sacrifices STATEWIDE Frontline workers have been highly deserving of thanks and accolades especially now during the COVID-19 pandemic. The month of May provides conveniently-timed recognition weeks to help remind us of the sacrifices made by doctors, nurses, police, firefighters, and other frontline staff. National Nurses Week concluded on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. Nationaltoday.com wrote “Thanks to her strict use of hand-washing and hygiene practices while caring for wounded
soldiers in the Crimean War, Nightingale and her helpers reduced the death rate from 42% to
2% — ushering in nursing as we know it today.” With over 3 million working
nurses in the US currently, nurses make up the highest percentage of the healthcare workforce. Registered nurses work everywhere from hospitals to nursing homes, or directly at a patient’s home. To show your appreciation, be sure to thank these “behindthe-scenes” professionals. At the least, bring them coffee to help them through their 12-hour (or more) shifts! A post on Southern Maine Health Care’s Facebook page said, “On this final day of Nurses Week, we want to thank all nurses for choosing a selfless profession that has never been more important. Thank you for your dedica-
tion and sacrifices. Thank you for your uncompromising excellence and compassion... They’re the heart in the heat of the moment. Being there when loved ones can’t be.” National Police Week runs May 10-15 this year, and was established to pay tribute to law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. Usually at this time, thousands of officers from across the country make their way to Washington D.C. to honor the brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the course of their duties.
and Footbridge beaches will allow walking, surfing, paddling, and fishing. Those with physical limitations are welcome to remain in position on the beach. Sports-related activities will still be prohibited since social distancing protocols are still in place. Estuary access is also prohibited at the main beach. Social distancing must
remain in practice at all York County’s beaches. Visitors should keep a distance of 6 feet from each other and group in less than 10 people. Please keep dogs leashed so as not to approach strangers needlessly. And please remember – People from out-ofstate are still subject to a 14-day quarantine. Local Beaches “Soft Open” YORK COUNTY York County’s beaches are slowy and carefully opening to local residents. After much deliberation, town officials have planned soft-openings which take into account the health of visitors and businesses alike. The Town of Wells reopened its beaches for walking, swimming, surfing, and fishing only, on May 11. The Town of York has announced it will open beaches and

“Maine Magical Realism” in Clark’s New Book YORK“Medillia’s Lament” is the newest release by local author Jody Clark of York. Like his previous five books, the story takes place in Maine. But unlike his previous books, Medillia’s Lament is a serious-toned story filled with despair, regret, and most of all, with what Clark calls “Maine Magical Realism.” The story, which is centered around two brothers, John and Kevin Mathews, takes place on fictional island called Applewood, just off the coast of Maine.

There will be no sitting, umbrellas, chairs, or tents allowed – and no access to the outdoor showers, fountains, or restrooms until June 1. Sohier Park will now be accessible but with no restroom or gift shop until June 1. June 15 is the intended date to open beaches to sitting as well as to open York’s

The magic stems from a fictional Native American legend about a fallen star named Medillia which crashes and emits its stardust onto the island. The following excerpt from the book describes it best: “As the legend goes, for the next nineteen sunrises, remnants of her stardust continued to fall onto the small Maine island. And it is said, during that brief moment in time, Applewood was turned into a magical place; a place where old wounds are healed, and a place where regrets find second chances. During this occurrence, time be-

comes irrelevant. The past, present, and future all get blurred together somehow, and within those nineteen sunrises, anything is possible… Anything.” The plot has many twists and turns, and although it starts off as a dark tale of loss and regret, it ultimately becomes a story about believing that things happen for a reason. When asked if this was his favorite book so far, Clark answered, “I know it’s cliché, but See BOOK page 6...

Amtrak Service Suspended & Gives Service Award
WELLS The Amtrak Downeaster will continue suspension through May 31. The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPRA) is working in partnership with Amtrak, Pan Am Railways, and station communities to prepare for the return of service later this spring. Pan Am Railways has expedited a series of

track improvement and maintenance projects to avoid construction-related interruptions later in the year. Train equipment used in the operation of Downeaster service is undergoing enhanced cleaning, and Amtrak has implemented new cleaning and disinfecting protocols nationwide. For details, visit www.amtrak.com. The railroad tracks are still active as freight trains continue to operate, as well as those for mechanical and training purposes. Trespassing on railroad tracks is extremely dangerous and against the law. The Amtrak Downeaster would like to spotlight Patsy Bragdon who has worked at the Wells Transportation Center for over 12 years. In 2017, Bragdon received the George Mitch-

If you asked anyone about Patsy, they would all highly praise her. Patsy greets everyone as if they are entering her home, she is very welcoming. She is truly the face of the Wells Train Station,” said Sally S., station manager in Wells.
Nod to the National Guard Armed Forces Day is celebrated in various forms around the world, as non-military personnel pay homage to those who serve. In the United States, Armed Forces Day is observed on the third Saturday in May each year – May 16, this year. It was established by President Harry S. Truman to celebrate all active duty service members. The U.S. National Guard has been providing domestic assistance throughout the COVID-19 outbreak. This branch of the military is unique from others in that it serves both local communities and the country as a whole. According to the National Guard’s official website, the guard responds to domestic emergencies, overseas combat missions, counterdrug efforts, reconstruction missions, and other missions as needed. The President of the United States and any state governor can call on the guard in a moment’s notice for assistance.
207.432.1738
The President may require the National Guard to be deployed around the world for stabilization operations. Domestically, governors usually require the guard for assistance during storms, fires, earthquakes, civil disturbances, or health crises. For example, the guard helped distribute food to residents of areas hardest hit by the coronavirus, assisting residents who were asked to remain in their homes. The guard also can help with things like transportation of medical personnel, disinfection, logistical support, and call center support. Each state has its own guard as required by the Constitution, and is the only branch of the military whose existence is required by the Constitution. The guard is a part of the reserve components of the United States Armed Forces as well. There also is a full-time cadre of active guard personnel in the Army National Guard and Air National Guard. Many guard members hold full-time civilian jobs while serving part-time in the guard.

...BOOK from page 1 I kind of look at all my stories as my babies, so it’s hard to pick favorites. But I will say this, Medillia’s Lament is definitely the best and most creative thing I’ve ever written, and it’s probably the story I’m most proud of. If people are looking for another lighthearted beach read, they’ll be in for quite a surprise. Hopefully, it will be a pleasant surprise.” Clark is best known for his popular Soundtrack to My Life trilogy, featuring “The Empty Beach”, “Between Hello and Goodbye”, and the final book – “The Ring on the Sill”. The trilogy was loosely based on Clark and his friends growing up in York Beach. Beyond the typical guy humor and silly summer shenanigans, he sprinkled in plenty of honest and heartfelt moments as well. Like all of Clark’s books, Medillia’s Lament was originally written as a screenplay. The first of many drafts was completed
back in early 2004. Out of the nine screenplays he has written, Medillia’s Lament has garnered the most attention from people in the movie business. Unfortunately, none of them could land the proper financing, leaving Clark to ponder new ways to share his stories. In 2012 he decided to start turning his screenplays into novels, and without a doubt, he knew Medillia’s Lament would be his first. “Even when I wrote Medillia’s Lament as a screenplay, I knew it would make an amazing novel. Because you have to keep a screenplay within a certain page count, I was forced to leave out so many details and backstories. So needless to say, I was very excited to add all of those ideas to the book version. Unfortunately, back then I had very little confidence in myself as a novel-writer. I didn’t believe I was a talented enough wordsmith to pull it off, so I ended up bringing on a co-writer to help me. Nearly four long years later, due to many creative differences, the project stalled, and I was forced to pull the plug on the whole thing.” It was at that point, Clark sunk into a deep writer’s depres-

Shakespeare Podcast Series & Video Contest NATIONWIDE Excitement, scandal, and intrigue fill each episode of a podcast series that focuses on the controversial Shakespeare Authorship Question as “Don’t Quill The Messenger: Exploring the Truth of Shakespeare Authorship” celebrates 33 episodes in the lineup on the Dragon Wagon Radio network. Hosted by Steven Sabel, and featuring guest scholars from all walks of life, Don’t Quill The Messenger takes an investigative and often humorous look at the details surrounding the works in the See SHAKES page 7... sion and even contemplated burning everything he had written. “If it wasn’t for the endless support and encouragement from my wife and son,” he said, “I would have done just that!” With a renewed sense of determination, Clark got back on track. Although he put Medillia’s Lament on the back burner then, he knew that when the time was right, he would tackle it again one day. Four years and five successful novels later, his confidence in his writing ability has grown by leaps and bounds. From its original conception in 2003 to now as a published novel, Medillia’s Lament took seventeen years. “It would be easy to say the whole process took so long because life just gets in the way sometimes. But I truly think in this case, life didn’t get in the way, but rather living life allowed me to find the way… The way to finetune this story where it needed to be… And the way to have more confidence in my writing and storytelling ability.” Medillia’s Lament is due to be released on May 16, and until stores reopen, signed copies will be exclusively available at www. vacationlandbooks.com.

Episodes in the series include “Shakespeare Authorship Question 101”, “Shakespeare and the Law” featuring experts discussing Shakespeare’s legal knowledge, “The Will of Shakspere” discussing the famous last will and testament of the man from Stratford, and “It was all Greek to me,” covering some of the many Greek allusions found in the Shakespearean canon. New intriguing episodes are released every other Wednesday at www.dragonwagonradio.com and every major podcast downloading site. Health & Fitness Major COVID-19 Testing Expansion for Maine STATEWIDE Governor Janet Mills announced that her administration has secured a major expansion of COVID-19 testing for the State of Maine. A partnership with Mainebased IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. provided enough testing kits to more than triple the state’s testing capacity. The breakthrough will soon allow anyone in Maine suspected of
having COVID-19 to receive a test. IDEXX, a worldwide leader in animal diagnostics, also has deep expertise in human diagnostics through its human health business, OPTI Medical Systems. the detection of the 2019 coronavirus. The Mills Administration is purchasing enough of these kits to run at least 5,000 tests per week for the foreseeable future. These tests are in addition to those conducted for Maine residents by nongovernmental labs in and outside of the state. “This changes everything,” Governor Mills said. “Acquiring this testing capacity is a major breakthrough for all the people of Maine. On behalf of this administration and on behalf of all the people of Maine, I thank IDEXX for their ingenuity, generosity, and partnership. Acts like this demonstrate to us the heart of Maine’s extraordinary companies and the power of public-private collaboration.” Additionally, IDEXX is loaning a testing instrument to the Maine CDC’s laboratory to
Program Aides Mainers Who Lose Health Insurance YORK COUNTY With thousands of Mainers losing jobs and, often, employer-sponsored health insurance during the recent COVID-19 outbreak, leaders of a program at MaineHealth want people to help accommodate the higher testing volume and is generously donating enough test kits to conduct 3,500 tests. This significant expansion will ultimately allow Maine CDC to eliminate its testing prioritization system, which most states have had to implement as a result of the limited national supply of testing materials. They are now hiring additional staff at Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory in Augusta to support the expansion.

$5 Million to Expand Testing WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that 18 health centers throughout Maine have been awarded a total of $4,732,797 to purchase, administer, and expand capacity for COVID-19 testing. Locally, $179,104 was allocated York County Community Action Corporation. “Expanded testing is crucial for our ability to ultimately reopen our society and to give Mainers the confidence to resume their daily lives. This important funding will be used to increase walk-up and driveup testing as well as purchase the PPE necessary to help protect those on the front lines,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. Big Daddy’s Ice Cream Opens with New Owners WELLS Big Daddy’s Ice Cream first opened its doors in 1976, started from scratch by Jack Harmon – and has been serving the public the same good, old fashioned, homemade ice cream ever since. The family tradition has continued with daughter Margaret and her husband Dan O’Connell – until this spring when Big Daddy’s opened with new owners. Locals Melanie and Raney Tromblee bought the successful ice cream shop in March. “Rest assured, that any changes will be minimal and we are working closely with Dan and Margaret to ensure you will continue to enjoy all of your ice cream favorites. We look forward to seeing all of you!” wrote Melanie on Big Daddy’s Facebook page.
Compounding pharmacist Cindy Theriault provided the Ogunquit Police Department with a donation of compounded hand sanitizer in April.
The Tromblees were huge fans of the well-established landmark in Wells. They are now excited for the opportunity to extend the family tradition of ownership to their children, niece Rachel, and grandchildren, in the future. The same current list of 41 flavors will continue to please loyal Maine residents and outof-state visitors. However, a few
new flavors may surface as well as some baked goods. Opening during the pandemic may limit the usual Big Daddy’s experience, but ice cream can still be enjoyed at your vehicle or as take-out Thursday through Sunday 12-9 p.m. Big Daddy’s is located at 2165 Post Road. For more information, call 207-646-5454 or visit www. bigdaddysicecream.net.
Nikanos Celebrates Family & First Anniversary OGUNQUIT For Marc and Jennifer Saulnier, it’s all about family. That’s why they named their restaurant Nikanos – a combination of their sons’ given Greek names, Nikolas and Christianos. The Mediterranean restaurant itself is an homage to Marc’s grandparents Antigone and Constantine Ganellas, the owners and proprietors of Valerie’s Restaurant, an Ogunquit landmark from 1947 until 1996. Nikanos, just three doors down from Valerie’s former location (now the site of Maine Street), is in its second season this April. The Saulniers were elated with the results of 2019, their opening year. “We were overwhelmed by the amount of local support,” said Marc. “We really felt the momentum needed in every restaurant launch was just cresting, and the current crisis not only halted our progress, but put us as well as everyone else in survival mode.” The restaurant is now open for take-out, curbside, and delivery, with temporary hours of 12-6 p.m. on Thursday and Sunday and 12-8 p.m on Friday and Saturday. “The silver lining was that we were planning on rolling out take-out and delivery this year, but just not this suddenly!” Saulnier said. Valerie’s was very much a family business. Saulnier’s parents Ray and Valerie (for whom it was named) worked there, and Ray purchased it in 1991.
Compounding Pharmacy Opens in York
Marc and his older brother John worked there as youngsters as well. He remembers, at the age of eight, standing on a milk crate in order to wash dishes. “I’d do anything to be part of the action,” he said. As he got older he bused tables, cooked, bartended, and eventually became a manager. Saulnier was forever impacted by his experiences at Valerie’s. Saulnier met his wife Jennifer when she was hired to bus and wait tables in 1983. “We became friends over the next few years and started dating in 1987,” Saulnier said. The couple married in 1991, had their first son, and worked at Valerie’s until it was sold in 1996. Jennifer also had a family connection to Valerie’s – her mother, brother, and two sisters, also worked there. “My Yiayia (Greek for grandmother) loved this busi-
ness to her core,” Marc said. “Her dining room was truly her living room and she made people feel that way. My Papou (grandfather) was the entrepreneur, and together they created a legacy that I hope we can prove worthy.” The Ganellas’ customers referred to Antigone as “Tiggie” and Constantine as “The Captain”; the staff called them “Mr. and Mrs. G.” After Valerie’s was sold, Jennifer and Marc changed career paths, but yearned to return to the business. “This was our last act if you will... Our dream to wake up every day and go to work doing something you love,” said Saulnier. When the Saulniers opened last year, they were assisted by their sons. Nicholas was the bar manager and Christian worked nights waiting tables, following his shift as a lifeguard at Ogunquit Beach. “When we told them the news last spring, they both offered to put their lives on hold and help us wherever we needed them,” Saulnier said. “The boys were truly a large part of our success last season.” Nicholas will now stay in Florida where he owns a juice company called “Love Yourself Juice”, but Christian continue to lifeguard and wait tables, as well as handle the restaurant’s social media. Jennifer will manage the front of the house and Marc will split time between the kitchen and dining room.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~
Dear Computer Lady, I need to remove Norton from my Windows 10. I no longer want it but can’t find the add and remove in the control panel. I can’t even find the control panel. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Jean Dear Jean, It is hard when you get a new operating system and you have to re-learn how to find anything. Let me share with you a quick way to find the old fashioned control panel. Simply click on start and just type “Control Panel” (without the quote marks). Windows 10 will do a search, and display a link to the control panel that you can click on. Once you get to the control panel, you should be able to find the link to uninstall a program. If you are still having problems removing Norton, they have a removal tool on their website. You can find a link and
directions on their website here: http://tinyurl.com/asvvgov. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have learned so much over the years from you. When you work with Windows 10, how do you create a shortcut for a webpage you are viewing? It used to be right-click and then click “Create Shortcut” and it would appear on the desktop. It does not work with Windows 10. I appreciate your help, Nancy Dear Nancy, The new browser that comes with Windows 10, the Edge browser, does not have a shortcut for saving a link to a webpage on the desktop. Your options in Edge would be to click the star and save the webpage to your favorites (you could put a shortcut to your favorites folder on your desktop) or you can copy the website address from the address bar, right-click on your desktop, point to “New”
click on “Shortcut” and paste the address in the new shortcut dialog box. Not the easiest solutions, but the best workarounds I could find. However, Internet Explorer still has that feature, and it is still available in Windows 10. Just click on the start button and type “Internet Explorer” to find it in the start menu. In addition to IE, you could also use Chrome or Firefox. In those browsers, you just drag from the address bar to the desktop to create a shortcut. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, A couple days ago Windows 10 was installed on my PC. Overall I think it is a very good system. However, I have lost my menu bar (File, Edit, Copy, etc.) at the top of the page. How do I restore this bar? Thank you for all the great information you have shared over the years. Robert
Dear Robert, You haven’t specified which program or app you have lost your toolbar in, but this trick should work in most Windows programs. Just tap the “Alt” key on your keyboard and the menu bar will temporarily appear. If you want it to be visible all the time, just follow these directions: Tap the “Alt” key to bring up the menu bar. Click on “View”, point to “Toolbars”, and click on “Menu Bar”. Now the menu bar will always be visible. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am grateful to be able to ask a question that is making me crazy! I have hundreds and hundreds of old photos that are priceless that I need to scan to make them available to all family. In the best world, I would love to give them each a disk with all the photos. My question is – is there a particular program that would
make this as simple and easy as possible? I think I probably have to scan each one but I’m looking for a program that I can put the picture, organizing them, and then be able to have a space to explain the picture and name the people. And for it to look nice – a little bit polished? Am I dreaming? Or is there a program out there? I know that you can hire a service to do all the scanning which would be so awesome, however, it’s not an affordable option for me. Thanks for any direction! Sincerely, Lora Dear Lora, You are right that you will need to scan each photo with a scanner. The software that comes with the scanner should make that part easy for you. I like the Epsom Perfection series of scanners, they are high quality (you will get better scans than you will from an inexpenSee COMPUTERS page 22...
BUSINESS & FINANCE York County Relief Fund Grants KENNEBUNK United Way of York County’s newly established York County COVID19 Relief Fund has granted more than $100,000 to local nonprofits that provide food, housing/emergency shelter, and youth engagement/teen mental health assistance to York County residents. The first round of funding was distributed in mid-April, and the second round by May 11. A third round of funding for nonprofits will happen in late
May as additional community needs are assessed. “The needs of individuals and families and the increased demand on nonprofit services during this time are staggering,” noted Barb Wentworth, UWYC’s President and CEO. “We are grateful to everyone working each day to meet these challenges and we are thankful to be able to support their efforts.” The grants are due to the incredible generosity of donors who have given directly to UWYC’s
COVID-19 Relief Fund, as well as those donors who took part in the Maine United telethon on NewsCenter Maine in early April. Locally, the York County COVID-19 Relief Fund has raised over $135,000 to date. Those wishing to donate can text COVIDMAINE to 41444 to contribute to the fund, or go to our website www.buildcommunity.org/york-countycovid-relief-fund. No fees will be taken from donations — 100 percent of the resources raised will go to nonprofits helping with food, housing and emer-
gency shelter, and youth engagement/teen mental health in York County. Checks can be mailed to: United Way of York County, P.O. Box 727, Kennebunk, ME 04043 with “COVID Relief” in the memo area. UWYC is also making connections in the community to help those in need due to the pandemic. This includes connecting Tom’s of Maine with several organizations that were able to include the local company’s hygiene products in community support efforts. UWYC has also facilitated weekly donations of
Starbuck’s coffee to healthcare workers at Southern Maine Health Care. Funky Bow Brewery in Lyman recently held a food drive that United Way staff delivered to the YCSP Food Pantry in Alfred. UWYC also worked with Arundel Ford to help Youth Full Maine with a van to deliver food to its clients. UWYC continues to seek out partnerships that will benefit the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information, call 207-985-3359.

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME
Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.
missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

WELLS Oreo and Vinney lived happily with their human companion for four years. In 2017, things changed dramatically when their human passed away. Suddenly the world they knew and loved disappeared. They were scared and confused. Nothing remained, except for their food dishes. They wandered their empty house and grieved. They had no idea where everything had gone or what would happen to them. Neighbors rallied for them, fed them, and scooped their boxes, but after they left, the quiet and loneliness of the house weighed on them. Eventually Safe Haven was alerted. Upon arrival, these two dear kitties were withdrawn, but ended up loving being around the other kitties and our volunteers at the shelter.

Eventually, they were adopted by a young couple. But now, two years later, the couple is expecting and worry that Vinney and Oreo might not fit into the new family dynamics. They don’t have as much time to play with the kitties, and they seem sad. So we are looking for either a foster home or a permanent home for Vinney and Oreo. They really deserve a permanent home where they can finally feel secure. Both kitties are males, very sweet and lovely. Oreo is a long-haired black and white, and Vinney is a slim, short-haired brown tiger. They are tightly bonded. These kitties are our top priority and need a new home asap. They’re only 6-7 years old and would be wonderful members of your family. Please help them.

Bear Sightings Increase YORK COUNTY With so many people staying home during the pandemic, wildlife is flourishing in areas usually too busy with human activities. Local news and social media channels have been inundated with wildlife encounters, and most alarmingly, with bears! Over the past century, conflicts between bears and humans in Maine have lessened with changes in agricultural practices, the decline of farming, and increased interest in bear hunting. In addition, Maine has a small human population (1.3 million) that is mostly concentrated in the southern third of the state where bear densities are lower and therefore bear-human conflicts are less numerous. However, each year, primarily in the spring and early summer, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife receives numerous calls from homeowners when bears have destroyed bird feeders or disturbed garbage. Most conflicts with bears can be prevented by removing common food attractants around homes. To help prevent conflicts during busy bear season, April 1 through October 1, consider the following tips: Bring in your bird feeders, rake up and dispose of any seed left on the ground, and store unused seed inside. If you want to continue to feed birds consider using an electrified mat. Clean your grills and empty the grease cup after each use. Do not discard grease on the ground. Burn-off any food residue, clean blood and grease dripping, and discard food wrappers. Bring trash to the curb on the morning of trash pickup or use a certified bear resistant container. Keep dumpster lids closed and do not allow them to overflow. Consider storing

dumpsters in a secure building or behind electric fencing. Try fencing or barriers around orchards, livestock, and beehives. Electric fencing works best if it is in place and operating before conflicts occur, as bears that are food-conditioned will go right through anyway. Bears can be lured into licking or sniffing the electrified wire by applying molasses, bacon grease, or peanut butter packets on the fence. Check resources for the correct voltage which may differ from that needed for deer. Corner posts will need to be carefully braced. Heavy chain-link or woven-wire fencing needs to be at least six feet high. Install barbed wire running along the top if necessary. Try a two-foot wide underground apron of chain-link or steel mesh staked down and attached to a fence to keep bears from digging underneath. Wildlife offices throughout Maine respond to bear sightings only when there is a threat to public safety or property. A See BEARS page 20...

...BEARS from page 16 simple sighting does not constitute a threat, so that typically, no attempt will be made by agency staff to remove, relocate, or destroy the animal at that time. Although problem bears can be live-trapped by specially-trained wildlife professionals and moved to more remote areas, removal is expensive, time consuming, and seldom effective. Once a bear has tasted human food or garbage,
it will remember the source and return again and again. Bears have been known to cover more than a hundred miles after relocation to return to a food source. In addition, using tranquilizing drugs on bears to facilitate removal is not without risks to bears and humans. When other methods have failed or the bear poses a threat to public safety, lethal removal of problem animals may be the only alternative. You can help prevent lethal removal by following the recommendations
presented above. Although the black bear is classified as a big game animal, consult Maine’s laws on harming nuisance bears. A hunting license and bear permit are required for the 13-week hunting season that opens the last Monday in August and closes the last Saturday in November. Call the Region A wildlife office in Gray at 207-287-2345 or visit www.maine.gov/ifw/ for more information. In the case of an emergency, call 911 or the state police.
