Hackmatack Playhouse Chosen as Location for Feature Film BERWICK Students and faculty from the Fairfield University Film, Television, and Media Arts program in Fairfield, Connecticut will be shooting a portion of their feature film titled “Wild Kingdom” at the Hackmatack Playhouse at the end of May and early June. who made the trip to spend the day learning about STEM careers. A biology teacher and ten female students from Wells, HS made the trip to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Students participated in 6 hands-on career tracks that included Emergency Medicine, Civil Engineering, Food Engineering, Veterinary Medicine, BioPharmaceutical, and Clinical Research. In addition they heard an outstanding keynote speech from Ms. Jo VIney, the VP of Immunology Research at Biogen Idec in Cambridge, MA. track workshops each led by local women who are leaders in their STEM fields. They were treated to a delicious lunch, won prizes and went home with a new understanding of many of the STEM careers available. The day ended with a talk from a college admissions agent and a giveaway for all the girls. The Summit was jointly hosted by Jr.Tech and Biogen Idec Foundation. The career tracks that were highlighted at this Summit were: Medical Science, Veterinary Science, BioTechnology, Clinical Research & Science, Civil Engineering and Food Engineering. Marshwood Interact Club Supports Families in Guatemala

SOUTH BERWICK For the eighth year in a row, Marshwood High School’s Interact Club has supported the Maine-based organization Safe Passage / Camino Seguro with a donation of $1200. In 8 years, Interact has donated $9600 to support Safe Passage with its work with the impoverished children and families of Guatemala City, Guatemala. At a combined Interact-Rotary meeting held on Thursday, May 1, Merrill “Skip” Cousens, a retired Marshwood English teacher now doing a long-term substitute teaching assignment at the school, told the group about his recent 10-day volunteer trip to work at Safe Passage along with
a group of Bowdoin College alumni. His group helped children with everything from art projects to yoga. Safe Passage / Camino Seguro was founded in 1999 by Hanley Denley, a graduate of Bowdoin College, whose life was transformed after seeing hundreds of at-risk children in Guatemala City dump picking through the refuse looking for food and items that could be sold.
