The combined Public Safety Facility is planned as a 20-30 year plan. Total budget for the program is projected at $14,242,071. Summarized for Post Road, totaling 40,300 sq. ft: 20,499 sq. ft. Police Program; 1,852 sq. ft.

MMS Hawk Robotic Teams Take Two Second Place Finishes at South Portland H.S.

ELIOT Congratulations to the Marshwood Middle School Hawk Robotic Teams. MMS teams took two second place finishes at South Portland High School where 20 schools took part in the 13th Annual Maine Robotics Track meet on Saturday, May 13. In the “Table Clearing

Challenge, teams constructed robots designed to clear a table of 8 soda cans as quickly as possible without the robot falling off the table. The winning team used an ingenious design with ultra-sonic sensors and V-shaped arms. The “Table Clearing team members Jonah Nobel, Leah Maddison and Sean Williams went 8 for 8 cans cleared

in 3 attempts in a nail biting time challenge for the win. In the “Delivery Challenge, teams design a robot that travels a set route to drop a Lego block through an elevated target. The "Delivery" team members Alana Moretti, Kai Machamer,

Riley St. Pierre, and William Sandusky problem solved and used trouble-shooting strategies to find their way to 2 out of 3 successful deliveries with a conveyor belt design. Maine Robotics is a nonprofit dedicated to providing

Maine youth and teachers with mentored activities within the STEM fields, focusing primarily on robotics for it's multidisciplinary coverage of science and its ability to provide timely and popular tie-ins with today's youth. FMI: mainerobotics.org.

The Scouts spend much of their day exploring the island and cooking scrumptious meals over an open fire. At sunset, the Troop respectfully retires old, worn out American Flags that have been given to the Troop for disposal. His brothers Carter and Logan are students at Marshwood High School, and are also musicians. Max recently performed on trumpet in the University of Southern Maine (U.S.M) Honors Recital which features the most talented performers in the U.S.M. School of Music. It is a special honor for a student to be invited to perform at this recital. Max performed both as a soloist and as part of a jazz sextet. His solo selection was the very challenging “Fantasie Brillante" by Jean-Baptiste Arban and he performed with amazing technique on this very challenging piece. receive a commemorative bookmark depicting Henry Strater’s portrait of Ernest Hemingway from a rare, first edition volume of the author’s 1924 masterpiece, “in our time, which is on loan to the Museum from Bromer Bookseller’s, Boston. “Strater and Hemingway met in Paris in the midst of a rising Modernist movement that influenced generations of artists and writers, said Ruth GreeneMcNally, OMAA Collections Manager and organizer of this exhibition. “Their artistic collaboration revolved around a fervor for beauty, sport, and social activism. The materials in this installation trace a tumultuous relationship between two creative figures and chart the possibilities and limits of art and humanity in our time. Following the exhibition, book donations will be contributed to OMAA’s 2018 Art, Books, and Collectibles Sale to benefit the Museum’s education programs. If you're traveling with your pet this summer and plan to fly to your destination, make sure you familiarize yourself with the airline's pet embargo policy before you book your flight. During the summer, many airlines don't allow pets aboard flights -- as checked baggage or as cargo -- when temperatures are high. Airline pet travel embargoes (stoppages) are in the best interest of your pet and play a vital role in ensuring his safety. Not only is air travel stressful for your pet, but it can also pose serious health risks. Being confined in a carrier for long periods of time during the hottest months of the year is potentially dangerous for your pet and may lead to dehydration and heatstroke. In addition, certain breeds, such as brachycephalic (snub-nosed) dogs and cats, are susceptible to pulmonary distress when temperatures are extreme. According to the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association (IPATA), embargoes protect pets from exposure to extreme heat while they're in the holding areas and

Since airlines impose embargoes to ensure your pet's safety, there are no exceptions. However, if an embargo is in effect on the day of your flight, the airline will work with you to re-route your flight, if possible, or schedule your flight for another day. Although each airline establishes its own policies for pet embargoes, the following are a few pet friendly airlines and some of their regulations. Alaska Airlines - Although Alaska Airlines doesn't have any embargoes scheduled this summer, if temperatures are too high for pets to travel safely, they may place an embargo. However, your pet may travel with you in the cabin if he fits in an approved carrier that can be placed under your seat. American Airlines - To ensure your pet isn't exposed to extreme heat, American Airlines imposes an embargo any time the current or forecasted temperature is above 85 degrees Fahrenheit at any location on the itinerary. Although, if your pet fits in an approved carrier that can be placed under your seat, he can travel with you in the cabin. Delta Air Lines - To ensure the safety of your pet, Delta places an embargo on pets as checked baggage from May 15 through September 15. BUSINESS & FINANCE How To Match Your Current Savings To Your Ultimate Retirement Needs In a nation that debates nearly everything, this topic creates almost no disagreement. Americans aren’t saving anywhere near enough for retirement, setting the stage for a potentially dreary time ahead for many when they reach the closing act of their lives. In fact, a study by the Economic Policy Institute found that almost half of American families have no retirement-account savings at all. While the widespreadsavings shortfall is a given, a consensus is trickier to find when it comes to advice on just how much of your weekly salary you need to stash away if you want your retirement to be secure. “Opinions vary; you’ll hear some people say 10 percent, you’ll hear others says 15 percent,” says Rick Rivera, a partner at Safeguard Investment Advisory Group. “Some people say you need to have saved $1 million by the time you retire, which is a tall order

for a lot of people.” Clearly, something is better than nothing, but following some general rule of thumb for saving could lead you astray, Rivera says. Everyone has different circumstances, goals, and objectives. “What your neighbor needs and what you need may not be the same thing at all,” he says. “You need to take a look at your own financial situation and at what a good retirement would look like to you. Rivera suggests a few things to consider on the way to zeroing in on the right savings amount: • Figure out what it is you plan to do in retirement. Do you want to travel or spend a lot of time golfing? Is there a hobby you enjoy? Maybe you want to spend time as a volunteer. “Once you have an idea what it is you want to do,” Rivera says, “you’ll want to consider the expenses related to those activities.” That means creating a budget and determining the amount of monthly income you’ll need to do the

things you want to do. • Review your potential income sources. Will you receive Social Security? Is there a monthly pension check in your future? Although it’s becoming much less common, some people have great pensions, so they don’t need to save as much. Most people, though, don’t fall into that category, so they need to focus more on saving to cover the shortfall. • Do the math. If, for example, your pension and Social Security add up to $4,000 a

month, but you’ve determined you’ll need $6,000, then you know you’ll need to make up that $2,000 shortfall from your sav-

ings. Based on your age and an estimated rate of return, a See SAVINGS page 29...

Rick’s Run 5K Run to be held in South Berwick SOUTH BERWICK Community members are looking forward to a new, family-friendly, 5K taking place Memorial Day weekend in South Berwick. This is a family-friendly, walk or run event, and will follow the same route as South Berwick's own Pumpkinman Triathlon sprint run course, "Rick’s Run" 5K was created in memory of Rich-

ard A. Roy, a Vietnam Veteran who served his country proudly, yet suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He lived with this burden daily throughout his life until he passed unexpectedly after complications from surgery in 2013. South Berwick resident Rachel Martin, wanted to do something special to keep her father's memory alive and help our current veterans, so "Rick's

Run" seemed like the perfect event to make that happen. "My dad struggled daily with PTSD after returning home from Vietnam. Veterans today are coming home and facing that same struggle. He would be happy to know we are doing something to help change the stigma around PTSD, and that we are assisting our veterans in getting the help they need at the time they need it," said Martin. Much research has been done to help veterans with PTSD, and Martin created this event to support this cause. "Rick's Run" will be donating 100 percent of the proceeds from this 100 percent Volunteer-run event to "Veterans Count", a program within the Easter Seals. Veterans Count’s mission is to provide critical and timely

Students Organize Blood Drive and Bone Marrow Registration YORK 4th grade students at Coastal Ridge Elementary School in York will organize their 6th annual blood drive on May 25. Miss switzer’s class will make phone calls to schedule donors, make signs, do presentations to high school classes to recruit young donors, and work the drive by manning the canteen. This year the students will also be involved in a bone marrow donor registration. There is a young soccer player at USM that is in need of a bone marrow transplant and no match has been found for her as

yet. Students are adding the “all for Ally marrow donor registry drive this year. People can donate blood and do a mouth swab both at the drive. This is such a great undertaking by these students and although they can not donate now, they are saving many lives each year with their drive. We are sure that when they are old enough they will value the importance donating themselves. Go online to www.redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment to donate blood. Health & Fitness York Harbor Inn Raises Funds for Autism Programs YORK The York Harbor Inn hosted their 4th Annual “Light It Up Blueâ€? fundraising event to raise awareness and funds for local Maine autism charities in April. Over $8,000 was raised to benefit two local groups: Waban’s new Autism Therapy Wing currently under construction at the Fraser-Ford Child Development Center, and Service Dogs by Warren Retrievers, a program that provides Autism Service Dogs. The Yorkshire Ballroom was alive with dancing, refreshments and raffles while the Oceanview Dining Room displayed an enticing collection of silent auction items that included weekend getaways, leather purses, home dĂŠcor and so much more! Aime from Aime’s Twist & Paint made fantastic balloon animals and flowers to entertain the children and many faces sported the creative artwork of Brenda Kiberd of Imagination Faces. Those same faces were mesmerized by the fantastic salt water iQuarium from Aqua-Theatre donated by Eddie Hanson with a living “Nemoâ€? fish,

colorful LED lights and video background, complete with dancing water in the speakers. Jillian Scaccia, Perry Kim and Carter Short each took a turn at center stage, entertaining the crowd by singing favorite songs and then the dance floor filled back up again as organizers Greg and Christa Silva led the whole group in a line dance, which has become a tradition at this annual event. Each April, the York Harbor Inn celebrates “Light It Up Blue along with the international autism community, in commemoration of the United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day. “Light It Up Blue is a unique global initiative that kicks-off Autism Awareness Month and helps raise awareness about autism and the people it affects. Silva is already planning for next year’s event, which will be the 5th Annual and he said, “I am, as always, extremely humbled and proud of this amazing event. I am blessed and thankful for everyone who donated goods, services and their time to this wonderful event. A special Thank You to ALL the volunteers and staff, the York Harbor Inn for allowing us to host this great night,

and thanks to everyone for attending. Your support means everything. We’ve got something really special planned for next year! Wednesday’s event brought the total raised over the last 4 years to over $38,000, distributed locally to various autism charities supporting children and families in Maine. Many thanks to Clark Sillery from Fred Pappalardo DJs, Chef Gerry Bonsey, Paul Houser and Chad Manning for the delicious food, Kate’s Bakery for the adorable little blue cupcakes and whoopee pies, and volunteers from The York Harbor Inn and Waban Projects. The Maine to Boston Photo Booth afforded everyone the opportunity to carry away a free memory of the night.

Is the Anti-Gluten Frenzy about to be Countered by a Pro-Wheat Comeback? Americans at one time lived their lives utterly unconcerned about the gluten in their

diets. But an anti-gluten craze that erupted in the last decade has become so prominent that it

in the opposite direction, though even Douillard acknowledges that avoiding gluten is the right move for certain people. May, for example, is Celiac Awareness Month, which brings attention to the genetic autoimmune disease that damages the small intestine. “People with celiac disease should avoid gluten, there’s no doubt about that, Douillard says. “But for the greater majority of people, the anti-gluten frenzy has gone too far and needs to dial it back. Far from being a dinnertable scoundrel, wheat can be beneficial, helping to lower the risk of diabetes, obesity and Alzheimer’s disease, he says.

spawned a $16-billion-a-year industry. Gluten became branded as the enemy of good health, bestselling books scared the public away from wheat, and foods marketed as gluten-free popped up everywhere. But it’s time everyone takes a deep breath and re-evaluates this whole “wheat-is-a-villain attitude, says Dr. John Douillard, a leader in the natural health field and author of “Eat Wheat. “Wheat was found guilty without a fair trial and there are risks when we just blindly take a food that people have eaten for 3.5 million years and remove it from our diets, Douillard says. He’s ready to lead the charge

“The real problem is that processed foods have changed our digestive systems,â€? Douillard says. “That’s why people often feel bad when they eat wheat. But taking foods out of the diet won’t fix what processed foods have done to your system. That just kicks the problem down the road, leaving people at risk for more serious health concerns later on.â€? So if going wheat-free isn’t the answer, what can you do to begin to improve your digestive system? That can get complicated, but Douillard has a few suggestions to get you started in the right direction: • Eat more fiber. Aim for 50 grams of fiber in your diet each day. Make half your plate green vegetables, one-fourth starch and another one-fourth protein. Increase the amount of beans you eat. Of course, beans can be difficult for some people to digest, but one easily digestible bean is the split yellow mung bean. As your digestion improves, you can re-introduce other beans. • Drink water between meals. The brain’s relationship with the rest of the body can be a funny thing. When people are dehydrated, the signals to the brain often get translated as hunger signals. So people scarf down an unhealthy snack when they should be reaching for a glass of water. A good guideline is 16 ounces 30 minutes before each meal. • Don’t overeat. Perhaps it can be traced back to our mothers telling us to eat every bite, but people have a tendency to eat until their plates are empty rather than stopping when they’re full. Douillard says it’s better to stop even before you’re full. About three-fourths full is the way to go, he says. “Your digestive strength is the key to a long, healthy and vital life,â€? Douillard says. “Whether you eat gluten shouldn’t be decided for you because of weak digestion. It should be decided by you based on what you prefer.â€? Dr. John Douillard, DC, CAP, author of Eat Wheat (www.LifeSpa.com), is a globally recognized leader in the fields of natural heath, Ayurveda and sports medicine, and is author of six previous health books. He is the creator of LifeSpa.com, a resource for Ayurveda. Douillard also is the former Director of Player Development and nutrition counselor for the New Jersey Nets NBA team. Health & Fitness Jayne Hitchcock Receives Red Cross ‘Real Heroes’ Honor YORK The Southern Maine chapter of the American Red Cross recently presented its 'Real Hero awards.' “We’re honoring everyday people who do extraordinary things in service to others,” said Patricia Murtagh, CEO of the American Red Cross of Maine. “We salute these Real Heroes and recognize that they embody the spirit that is at the very heart of the American Red Cross. It’s the dedication of our volunteers and the generosity of our donors that ensures that we can be there for families when disaster strikes.” Among the 2017 Southern Maine Real Heroes was local resident, Jayne Hitchcock of York, who received the Education Award. Hitchcock started fighting cyberbullying and cybercrimes after she became a target

of online stalking in 1996. Maryland, where she lived at the time, was the first state to pass an email harassment law and she became the resident cybercrimes expert for “The Montel Williams Show.” The author of “Cyberbullying and the Wild, Wild Web: What Everyone Needs to Know,” Hitchcock works with young people to help them protect themselves online. She also urges their parents to be more involved with what their children are doing online. “They need to sit down, talk with their children and find

out what’s going on and not get mad at them,” Hitchcock said.

“Because the one thing I hear most often from students is that they are afraid they’re going to be punished and kicked off the internet if they go to their par-

ents for help.” For more information, pvisit maineredcross.org, and find them on Facebook and Twitter.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, I've converted to Windows 10 & since then am unable to log in as a user, (forgot my password) though I can as administrator. Initially, I follow the prompts asking for the USB thumb drive to be inserted to make another password. And then, I'm asked to put in a disc. I have a DVD-R disc, which does not work. Can you please furnish me with "noob - ez" instructions, please? Thank you most kindly! Joseph Dear Joseph, Since you are able to login as an administrator, you can quickly and easily change the password on the user account

from the administrator account. Here is how: First, you want to open the control panel. Depending on the version of Windows 10 you are running, you can either access the Control Panel by right-clicking on the start flag, or click on the start flag, type, "Control Panel" and click on "Control Panel" in the results. Once in the Control Panel, click on "User Accounts", then click on "User Accounts" again. Click on "Manage another account", and click to select the account you want to change the password for. Click, "Change the password" for the account, type your new password twice, add

Computer Lady Spring Cleaning Special

a hint if desired, then click the "Change Password" button at the bottom of the dialog box. Hope this fixes your problem, Elizabeth Dear Reader, I'm sure you have heard by now about the newest ransomware outbreak, 'WannaCry.' I think the name is pretty descriptive. Many of you have called and written about it over the past couple of days. How can you make sure you are protected? There are two things you need to do. First, and most important is to make sure you have a backup that is NOT connected to your computer. If you are comfortable with cloud backups, then use something like Carbonite. It will automatically backup your files, and

they will be waiting for you to retrieve if you do get hit with any form of ransomware. If you are not comfortable with cloud backups, get yourself two external hard drives and set them up with your backup program. Only use one at a time, and every week switch the drives so that if you get infected, you still have a backup that is less than a week old. Second, make sure your computer is protected. Don't run Windows XP. Don't open any attachments unless you know who sent it, and you are expecting them to send you an attachment. Make sure you are doing windows updates. Make sure your security software will protect you from ransomware. Remember that the post office

Bring your computer in for a complete clean-up / tune-up during the month of May and

will not send you an attachment. I do know that Emsisoft anti-malware will protect you from this version of WannaCry. You will have to check with your security software company to see if they have protection in place yet. One other interesting thing that I read on PCmag. com is that more than $33,000 has been paid in ransom, but no one has reported being able to get their files back. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, In my windows 7 when I click on the bookmarks tab at the top of my page, in the drop down list, I cannot delete any bookmarks. I use windows 7 classic shell, and Firefox. There was a time when I could right click on an un-used bookmark and then delete it, now I can't. Nothing happens when I right click. Is there a way to fix it? Mary Dear Mary, While I can't tell you how to fix this problem without first figuring out what is causing the right-click to stop working, I can give you some other methods of deleting bookmarks in

Dear Nancy, Microsoft has had many different email programs over the years, and each has had different features. I'm pretty sure that Windows Live Mail has the ability to create folders to store your messages in, but I know that the newer email app that comes with windows 10 does not have that ability. Instead of using Windows Live Mail, I like to set up Mozilla Thunderbird for my custom-

ers. It is a free, open source email program that has been around for many years and will most likely be around for a good many more years. You can download Thunderbird at: https://www.mozilla.org/ en-US/thunderbird/. Once you have downloaded Thunderbird, double click on the file to run the installation. Thunderbird is easy to set up, all you need to know is your email address and password. It even works with online email accounts like Gmail. Thunderbird is easy to backup. Everything is located in two folders which makes it easy to backup, and easy to transfer to another computer when the time comes to upgrade. Thunderbird allows you to create as many folders as you want to organize your email messages. People and Business Profiles The Truth about Ogunquit Rotarians

OGUNQUIT For those who may be considering joining the Ogunquit Rotary Club, this article will, hopefully, offer some inspiration. First some common misconceptions: Attendance is taken and you must commit a certain percentage of your life to Rotary. FALSE! While weekly attendance is encouraged, it is not mandatory to attend. And if you’re seasonal to Ogunquit, that’s okay too. You’ll quickly realize that after Friday morning Rotary breakfasts you'll feel invigorated and ready to tackle your day. You will look forward to catching up with this special group of people on a regular basis. Meetings are weekly, Friday mornings at 8 a.m. at the Beachmere Inn, $8 for breakfast and coffee. You must be 50+ to fit in. FALSE! While Rotary was formerly considered an old men’s club, this has changed complete-

ly. Everyone, all ages and genders are welcome. Members range in all ages and backgrounds and there is a deep sense of camaraderie that makes this group an extension of your family. Meetings consist of lunch and drinking. FALSE! There are many people who simply don’t know about the meetings and what purpose Rotary serves. Meeting agendas generally consist of breakfast (and coffee!) and catching up with fellow members.

Then club affairs are discussed, Happy and Sad dollars are shared and a guest speaker from the region is introduced. Meetings run about 1 hour and if you have to leave early, that’s okay! As for Rotary’s purpose, its motto is “Service Above Self. To the Ogunquit club, this means volunteer work as a club and charitable club donations to local causes. Ogunquit Rotary is involved in several local projects and causes. A few of them are ongo-

ing, annual events, while others are one time donations or causes. One of the greatest aspects about this club is that you can be as involved as you want (and even suggest service projects!). If you don’t have the time, there is no pressure to commit to certain number of events and hours. Projects and support include: The Beach Wheelchair, 2-Cent Sale, York County Realtors Fuel Fund, Spirit of Giving, “kitchens in rural schools of Colombia, the Rotary Park at Perkins Cove, Capriccio Kite Festival, Habitat for Humanity, Gra...ODYSSEY from page 2

hamtastic, Wells Library, scholarships at Wells-Ogunquit High School and York County Community College, just to name a few. FMI: ogunquitmerotary.org. ...JURIED from page 13 NH, to name a few. Susan Mesick draws inspiration for her oil and pastel paintings from local landscapes. She believes, “Making a piece that speaks to the viewer is what makes a painting successful. She is a member of numerous art associations in Maine and New Hampshire. She is represented by Gallery on the Green in Alfred. After retiring from teaching English, John Forssen began to work in pencil in earnest with attention to every detail and nuance. He said, “Tones and textures are infinite in the world around us... the world around us and inside us is a fascinating place the details of which are deserving of our attention.
