Congdon’s After Dark Dedicates Opening to First Responders WELLS Congdon’s After Dark will give free doughnuts to all first responders and medical personnel during Memorial Day weekend as the popular food truck park kicks off its fifth season of operation. The park, located on Route One in Wells outside Congdon’s Doughnuts Family Restaurant & Bakery, will open on Thursday, May 27 at 4 p.m., hosting up to 10 food trucks in the evenings from late-May until early-October. Every guest who identifies
themselves as a first responder or medical professional at Congdon’s Sugar Shack food truck will receive a free doughnut. Congdon’s owner Gary Leech said this is a way to say thank you to the frontline workers who have helped lead the country out of the pandemic. “When you think of the bravery and selflessness of these people, it’s just inspiring,” said Leech. “There are so many other groups who did so much, but we thought it was important to start with the people who kept us safe
during all of this craziness.” The park’s 2020 opening was delayed because of the pandemic, but reopened in mid-June with a new layout and social distancing measures in place. Many of the same measures will remain in 2021 to ensure guests feel comfortable. One change, based on new guidance from the CDC and state of Maine, guests will now be allowed to enjoy the park without wearing masks if they choose. See CONGDONS page 20...

YORK COUNTY The pandemic has made for a difficult year for farmers’ markets, farmers, and producers. The amazing local market managers and organizations holding summer markets have worked very hard to make this season both safe and as close to normal as they can get. Be sure to follow local rules and guidelines including town mask mandates and CDC guidelines when attending your local farmers’ markets. Hines Raises ‘Benchmark’ for Eagle Scout Project
YORK York Hospital is the appreciative and fortunate beneficiary of a winter’s worth of hard work and skilled crafts-
manship by Eagle Scout Benjamin E. Hines of York. Ben, a member of Troop 301, Pine Tree Council, in the York District of Boy Scouts of America, chose

Greetings From Fishermen’s Dock Wow, it’s been quite a rocky ride for the past 18 months and the business forecast still proves to be uncertain. The pandemic, politics, inflation, unemployment, and the workforce not interested, have caused a completely new direction for the Restaurant Business World. At this juncture, it’s an expensive hobby at best! For this reason, I have decided to sell “The Dock” as of May 23rd at 4 p.m. I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and with perseverance have been able to succeed! At this point in my life, it is time to move on. So many thanks to the staff, patrons, and the many good friends who made the past eight years truly enjoyable!

to refurbish five outdoor park benches located on the hospital campus for his mandatory Eagle Scout Service Project. The wood and metal benches, in need of varying levels of attention, were removed from their concrete pads in February, repaired off site, and returned in April – just prior to the area’s first run of warm weather. Upon previous visits to York Hospital, Ben noticed how often the benches were enjoyed by patients, and visitors, and employees, weather permitting. “Patients use these benches to wait for appointments, and employees enjoy them during breaks and for outdoor lunches,” he explained. Ben also noted the increased importance of outdoor seating, especially in a medical setting, with COVID-19 still a concern, making it more comfortable for everyone. York Hospital Communications Specialist Jean Kolak couldn’t agree more, noting “Ben’s significant donation of both his skill and his time, has made a visit to York Hospital more comfortable, in

every sense. Our benches, are like new, and are the perfect spot to sit, relax and enjoy the scenery. They also offer peace of mind for those who prefer to remain outside in the fresh air and shade, while waiting for a friend or family member visiting with one of our providers.” The benches are located in between the Henry S. Warner Medical Office Building and the Garden Room at MIRACLES – The Diana Baldwin Dunnan Family Center. While the logistics, materials and project planning were Ben’s responsibility, the refurbishment work was shared by others. Fellow Troop 301 members Cam Dalton and Darryl Kelly, as well as neighborhood friends and family joined in to help.

~ News ~ Community Colleges will Open in Fall with Expanded Access AUGUSTA Maine’s community colleges will offer expanded in-person learning this fall, part of an overall effort to return campus life to as close to normal as possible, while still meeting COVID-19 safety measures. “We are eager for the students, faculty and staff to return to our colleges as much as possible,” said Maine Community College System President David Daigler. “Hopeful signs such as Maine’s clear vaccination rollout plan gives us confidence in planning expanded in-person instruction.” The fall plans will evolve as more health and vaccine-related guidance emerges. If pandemicrelated restrictions ease, the intention is to offer a more traditional student experience this fall, with expanded classes, residential hall capacity, food service and other on-campus activities. During the last year, only about 30 percent of classes were offered in-person, residence halls at five campuses were limited to one person per bedroom, and campus facilities were mostly closed. The presidents of Maine’s community colleges are releasing campus-specific information about fall plans. All seven col-
leges will continue to use daily COVID-19 screening apps to monitor the on-campus population and enforce health protocols. More than 75 percent of the programs at Maine’s community colleges are the only ones of their kind in the state, and MCCS serves more than 29,000 people each year through degree programs, customized training, and credit and non-credit offerings. “Maine’s community colleges are essential to preparing people with the skills they need for the jobs they want, and for Maine to build a strong, sustainable recovery,” Daigler said. “Throughout history, education has been the cornerstone for transforming our economy after every major disruption.” Information about the Fall semester at York County Community College in Wells can be found at www.yccc.edu/covid19/. No More Overdue Fines
The American Library Association is urging libraries to go fine-free. Recognizing that fines have the effect of barring access to our most vulnerable populations, many libraries around Maine have followed that advice. In light of this, the library voted to permanently remove fines for overdue materials. Patrons will still be responsible for bringing materials back on time and will be charged the replacement cost for any lost or damaged materials or for materials that are

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Nikon Small World Photo Exhibit at Wells Reserve WELLS Feather of peacock, eye of weevil, and mite on a honeybee may sound like ingredients in a fanciful witch’s brew, but they are among the awardwinning close-up photographs showing at the Wells Reserve at Laudholm between May 28 and July 18. The exhibit presents the top 20 images from the 44th annual Nikon Small World photomicrography competition, those that were judged the best among almost 2,500 entries from scientists and artists in 89 countries. “Nikon Small World celebrates the beauty and complexity of life as seen through the light microscope,” explained Nik Charov, president of Laudholm Trust, who arranged for the exhibit to appear in Maine this summer. “Scientists at the Wells Reserve examine microscopic life all the time, from lobster eggs to zooplankton. This show is a great fit for a renovated exhibit space that also features a window into our active research lab.” First-place winner Yousef Al Habshi said, “Through photomicrography we can find a whole new, beautiful world which hasn’t been seen before.
I feel like I’m photographing a collection of jewelry.” Al Habshi’s winning image captures part of the compound eyes and surrounding greenish scales of an Asian red palm weevil. He stacked more than 128 micrographs “to show the black
body against the black background without overexposing the skin and scales.” Second place was awarded to Rogelio Moreno for his colorful photo of a fern sorus, a clustered structure that produces and contains spores. Saulius Gugis captured third place with an image of a spittlebug making its “bubble house.” Eric Flem, communications manager at Nikon Instruments, said “Imaging and microscope technologies allow artists and scientists to capture scientific moments with remark-
able clarity.” Winning photographs, images of distinction, and honorable mentions from current and past competitions can be viewed at nikonsmallworld.com. Nikon Small World will be
open 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. daily, with COVID-19 precautions in place. Entrance to the exhibit is free with regular admission to the Wells Reserve at Laudholm. For more information, go to www. wellsreserve.org/art.

Dear Leon, There are a couple of things
you can do. First, make sure you have a good antivirus program installed and make sure you keep it updated! I use a great antivirus program, Emsisoft from www. emsisoft.com and it has prevented my system from becoming infected with any viruses. In fact, most of the time, it removes the virus from the email message before it allows me to read the email. Another thing you can do, is turn off the message pane in Thunderbird Mail. You can do this by clicking on the menu icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. The menu icon is made up of three horizontal lines stacked on top of each other. In the menu, point to “Options” then point to “Layout” in the
sub-menu and finally, click on “Message Pane” to turn it off. Now, you will have to double click on your messages to open them. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, A friend introduced me to your column... I love it and I thank you. How would I reduce a JPG photo that was taken by some else and downloaded on a CD for me? I have reduced it but I can not download the reduce one that I copied to my document folder. Arax Dear Arax, How you compress a JPEG photo depends on the software program you are using to work with your pictures. Since my favorite photo program Irfanview,

is free, I will give you directions using that program. If you don’t have Irfanview installed on your computer, you can read about it, and download it on their website at www.irfanview.com. When you have Irfanview installed on your computer, open your JPEG picture in Irfanview. You can do this using the “File” and “Open” commands in the menu bar. When you have the image open, click on “Image” in the menu bar, and then click on “Resize/Resample”. This will bring up a small window with some options to chose from. In the Resize/Resample image window, you will be able to chose from several options. You can set a new size by typing in the pixel size, make the new picture a percentage of the original, or select some standard sizes. I usually like to use the button on the upper right hand side of the window that says “Half” You can click on that button once or twice and get the picture as small as you would like. Once done, click the “OK” button at the bottom of the window and you will see your image in its new size. If you like the size of your new image, you can save it. Don’t forget this step, because if you close the image without saving, you will revert back to

Dear Computer Lady, I read your column each week, like some folk do the Bible. I’m new to computers and do not fully understand the email system in Thunderbird. But I’m worried when I receive email from someone I don’t know and to be honest I’m scared to open them because they might contain viruses. Is there some way to highlight the “strange” email without it popping open and possibly contaminating my system. This way I can contain it, right click on my mouse and hit delete. the original large size image. Just click on “File” and “Save As”. I always give the smaller image a new file name so that I don’t lose the original. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am having trouble with my “Num Lock” key. It seems it turns itself off and if I don’t notice that the Num Lock light is “off” and use the number keys, they do not work (print). Is there a way to fix this problem? Thanks for your help, Joe Dear Joe, Normally, Windows is supposed to remember what position the Num Lock key is in, and put it back in the same position when you start your computer back up. If your Num Lock key is only resetting when you turn your computer off and then back on, then the problem with probably with Windows itself. There is a registry key for keeping the Num Lock key on or off when Windows starts, but editing the registry is not for beginners, and can cause your computer to stop working if you make the wrong changes so I am not going to give directions here. You can find directions if you search online. You might also want to go to the power settings in the control panel and turn off “Fast Startup”. This sometimes helps Windows get all the settings right when it is starting up. If the Num Lock key is resetting more often, while you are using the computer, I would suspect a problem with the keyboard. Try using a different keyboard. If you are using a laptop, you can always plug in a USB keyboard just to troubleshoot the problem. Hopefully, this will help you with your problem. Health & Fitness A New Resource: Toolbox.vet NATIONWIDE America’s longest war will draw to a close in Afghanistan in September, but advocates say reckoning with the impact of those wars will stretch decades into the future, and a new online library aims to better equip advocates and providers with the tools they need to connect with veterans of all ages and assist them. Developed by Swords to Plowshares and funded in partnership with the Walmart Foundation, Toolbox.vet is unique in that it blends written content with podcast audio and video conversations with real veterans and advocates. So while you are reading content online, you can also hear real people talk about the issue athand. Chapters are also available in audio formats, making it convenient to learn and build your competencies in veterans advocacy and support. Content is broken up into 10 chapters, with chapters 1-4 debuting online on May 17, 2021. These chapters will discuss the history of veterans advocacy (it hasn’t always been easy), military-veteran culture, veteran mental and behavioral health, and veteran physical health. Chapters 5-10 will be published to the site by Monday, June 14 and discuss accessing Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits, traumainformed care and designing spaces and services to welcome veterans, supporting unhoused veterans, education benefits for veterans, employment and training services for veterans, and administrative best practices when assisting veterans. Swords to Plowshares will offer free webinars monthly from May through September to spotlight key elements of Toolbox.vet such as aging veterans, assisting homeless veterans, understanding VA benefits and more. MaineHealth Begins Vaccinations of Children ages 12-15 PORTLAND MaineHealth, the region’s largest integrated health system, announced that it has begun offering vaccinations for COVID19 to children ages 12-15 following state and federal approval of inoculations for that age group. In anticipation of the approval, MaineHealth opened up registration for the vaccine to children ages 12-15 last week, and more than 2,000 pediatric patients are registered. MaineHealth began offering appointments for those children today, and it is expected that all those who signed up will be offered an appointment this week. MaineHealth is also offering vaccinations on walk-in basis to children 12-17 at some of its clinics, including this week at locations in Westbrook and Brunswick. However, as eligibility expands to individuals age 12-15, parents and families are encouraged to schedule appointments in advance to avoid long wait lines and ensure vaccine is available. Only the vaccine made by Pfizer-BioNTech is approved for use in people under the age of 18. All people (including non-Mainers) over the age of 12 can be registered for an appoint-
ment at vaccine.mainehealth.org, and those 18 and over can schedule their appointment directly through that site, an option that is sometimes also available for those under 18 depending on Pfizer vaccine availability. Information about walk-in options are also available through the website, and people can also register by calling 1-877-780-7545. Once registered, children under the age of 18, or their parents as appropriate, will be notified of an appointment at a clinic set up for younger patients. MaineHealth is also working with local school districts to set up vaccine clinics in high schools and middle schools. The first of these are taking place this week in Oxford County. MaineHealth officials say they are anxious to set up the school-based clinics soon so that second doses of the Pfizer vaccine, which are given at least three weeks after the first, can be administered by the end of the school year. For those seeking a vaccination, children under 18 will require consent from a parent or legal guardian. There are no outof-pocket costs for getting the vaccine, but people should bring their insurance information. Health insurance is not required, however, to receive a free vaccination.

Recovery Center Receives $5K Grant From St. Peter's YORK On Thursday, May 13, representatives from St. Peter’s by the Sea Community Sharing Committee presented a check for $5,000 to the York Hospital Recovery Center to help provide treatment medication to people in recovery from opioid use disorder. The donation was a result of a number of informational sessions held via Zoom this spring, as St. Peter’s Committee members evaluated community needs and where their support might be most impactful. Due to the worsening of Maine’s drug overdose crisis during the pandemic, largely because of the opioid epidemic, St. Peter’s decided to do something tangible to help people on their road to recovery. As the pandemic ushered in isolation and financial hardship, overdose deaths reached new heights in 2020. “We know that stress, isolation, and economic upheaval are all known triggers for addiction and relapse,” said Eric Haram, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor and Director at the York Hospital Recovery Center. “This past year has been hard on so many people in treatment for substance use disorders and we’re very grateful to receive financial support that benefits our patients directly. This generous grant from St. Peter’s by the Sea will literally allow York Hospital to provide 500 doses of the treatment medication buprenorphine to patients in need,” added Haram. Buprenorphine is an oral

sublingual medication used to treat opioid addiction. The medication helps to curb the craving to use opioids by blocking a person’s opiate receptors, thereby reducing the urge to use. Without that overwhelming urge to use the drug, it is easier for those who are addicted to opioids to break that initial grip that the drug has on them and engage more successfully in treatment and longterm recovery. York Hospital’s President and CEO, Dr. Patrick Taylor was grateful for the opportunity to meet the St. Peter’s Committee and thank them in person for their generous grant. “Many of us in medicine enter the profession as a calling to serve, similar to a spiritual calling. The important work that St. Peter’s by the Sea is doing by sharing proceeds from church collections with community members in need is honorable and greatly appreciated. I believe York Hospital and St. Peter’s share a similar mission to improve conditions and provide care and compas-

Additional Federal guidance from the U.S. CDC for schools and other venues is expected. Health & Fitness Good Shepherd Food Bank Embarks on Campaign to End Hunger by 2025 STATEWIDE Good Shepherd Food Bank, Maine’s largest hunger-relief organization, is embarking on an unprecedented $250 million campaign to end hunger in Maine by 2025. The organization’s leaders say the campaign goal is as extraordinary as the problem itself. Before the pan-
demic, the Food Bank estimated that 175,000 Mainers were at risk for hunger, and now that number could climb upwards of 215,000 — or 16% of the population — including 60,000 children. “The pandemic has placed a microscope on the devastating impacts of hunger, the resiliency of our 500 partners across the
$400K to Bolster Health Services includes YC Community Action WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus King (I-ME) announced that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has awarded a total of $418,800 to strengthen health services in communities throughout Maine. The grants will support the Portland Community Health Center, Maine Mobile Health Program Inc., York County Community Action Corporation, and Islands Community Medical Services, Inc. “Access to affordable healthcare is key to the health and well-being of our communities, particularly during the coronavirus pandemic,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “At this critical moment when vulnerable populations are at increased risk, we welcome this funding to support health centers in Cumberland, Kennebec, York, and Knox Counties as
they work to serve Maine people. In the days ahead, we will continue to advocate for necessary resources to help Mainers stay healthy through this pandemic and beyond.” The funding is allocated as follows: Portland Community Health Center has received $118,500; Maine Mobile Health Program Inc. has received $95,100; York County Community Action Corporation has received $106,140; Islands Community Medical Services, Inc. has received $99,060. This DHHS funding was awarded through the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Health Center Cluster Program at HHS, which is tasked with improving access to health care by building healthy communities, strengthening the health care workforce, and achieving health equity. HRSA’s programs target the economic and medically vulnerable as well as the geographically isolated.
$3.5M to Combat Mental Health and Substance Use WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced recently that the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and two tribal organizations in Maine have been awarded a total of $3,586,266 to support mental health and substance use programs throughout the state. This funding was awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). “No community is immune from these heartbreaking disorders that have taken a toll on far too many of our peers, friends, and neighbors,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “Substance use and mental health pro-
grams are important to building healthier and more prosperous communities. We welcome this important investment in Maine families.” The funding will be allocated as follows: Maine Department of Health and Human Services has been awarded $2,000,000; Aroostook Band of Micmacs has been awarded $500,000; Wabanaki Health and Wellness has been awarded $1,086,266. This funding will support accessible mental health programs across Maine, improve outreach and case management programs, and ensure that scientifically-established findings and practice-based knowledge are applied in preventing and treating mental health and substance use disorders.
state, and on the willingness of Mainers to reach out and help their neighbors,” said Kristen Miale, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank. “With a renewed public awareness about the prevalence of hunger, now is the time to build a movement and end hunger in our great state. The pandemic will someday fade away, but its impacts on hunger won’t unless we take action now.” Through its Campaign to End Hunger in Maine, Good Shepherd Food Bank endeavors to raise $100 million in cash and pledges and $150 million in donated food before the end of 2025, creating an overall fundraising goal of $250 million. The organization has raised $115 million in food and funds to date. Hannaford Supermarkets is the lead donor for the campaign, projecting it will contribute $120 million in donated food and financial donations through 2025. “In the 40 years since Hannaford Supermarkets helped found the Food Bank, we’ve never seen a need like there is today,” said Mike Vail, president of Hannaford Supermarkets. “As an employer with stores throughout Maine, we have seen firsthand the negative impact hunger has on individuals and our state. ” Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has also offered a national endorsement of the Food Bank’s work with a gift of $25 million. Supporters have repeatedly responded to the organization’s calls for help with unprecedented generosity.
The goal of the Campaign to End Hunger is to ensure that every Mainer has access to enough nutritious food, when and where they need it, by 2025, and the primary measure for meeting that goal is meal distribution. Based on data from Feeding America, the largest hunger-relief organization in the U.S., Good Shepherd Food Bank estimates that 40 million meals are missing from the plates of Mainers this year. In partnership with more than 500 community organizations in its network, the Food Bank has grown its distribution from 10 million meals in 2010 to 27.2 million meals during its last fiscal year. This leaves a gap of nearly 13 million meals, which the Food Bank will work to close through its campaign by

sourcing and distributing more meals. But food alone will not end hunger. In addition to providing more meals, the Campaign to End Hunger in Maine will invest immediately and ongoing in the capacity of existing community partners through direct grants. Campaign priorities also include developing new partnerships and innovative models for community food access and advocating for public policy that improves food access for families, seniors, children, and all individuals. Across all of its strategies, the Food Bank will focus on equity for communities of color, which are disproportionately affected by hunger, and inclusion of community members who have lived experience with hunger. FINANCE & CAREER Maine Tourism Optimistic
STATEWIDE The Maine Tourism Association (MTA) recently polled its members about their perspective on the upcoming summer tourism season, visitor concerns and questions, and how the pandemic is affecting their business decisions. According to MTA Chief Executive Officer Tony Cameron, members responding to the survey were optimistic that their business and tourism in Maine were on the road to recovery, and that this year’s spring and summer season would be far better than 2020. “We need a strong recovery and this is going to be a critical year for the long-term health of Maine’s tourism industry. When tourism is strong, more Maine people are put to work, and businesses buy more local products and services,” Cameron said. Of all those responding to the survey, 69% were optimistic the tourism in Maine will do significantly better this year than last and will start to recover from the pandemic, while 67% were optimistic that their business is in the process of recovering this year. For businesses that take reservations, most say those reservations are still far from prepandemic numbers. Only 35% said their reservations for the spring and summer were close (76-100%) to what they were in 2019. Just over one-third (36%) of the respondents said their reservations were between 26% and 75% of 2019 numbers. An overwhelming number of respondents, 74%, said most potential visitors were asking about vaccination, quarantine and testing requirements to visit Maine. Some 18% of visitors
were asking about capacity and service limitations at businesses and attractions they planned to visit, and only 8% asked about cleaning, safety and health protocols at the business. When asked about the biggest factor affecting their decisions on such things as staffing numbers and start dates, marketing, investments in and maintenance of their property, and opening and closing dates (for seasonal businesses) in planning for this spring/summer season, the responses were as follows: General economic uncertainty and the potential for cancellations – 34%; Uncertainty about travel restrictions for visitors from different states (quarantine/ testing/vaccination requirements) – 28%; Limited capacity for customers/guests – 24%; Lack of operating funds because of last year – 15%. Cameron said that tourism promotion by the state is also critical to a successful season. Last week, the Maine Legislature enacted a Resolve (LD 246) to keep unexpended funds in the state’s Tourism Promotion Marketing Fund to be used this year. Survey respondents overwhelmingly believe that Maine’s marketing efforts are important to tourism’s recovery – 87% said these efforts were important. Cameron also noted that promoting Maine to visitors is helping to attract new residents too. “Our staff at the State Visitor Information Centers are speaking to a lot people who are moving to Maine, not just visiting. This demonstrates that promoting Maine is not just about marketing us as a vacation destination but reminding people about Maine’s unsurpassed quality of life. Tourism marketing helps drive our entire economy,” he said.
Invasive Plant Control Grant Program Applications Open AUGUSTA The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s (DACF) Maine Forest Service (MFS) is providing up to $85,000 through 2023 for local governments, municipalities, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and private family woodland owners interested in obtaining Invasive Plant Control Practice Plans (IPCPP) for their woods. This new invasive plant management program is administered by the MFS and the Maine Natural Areas Program (MNAP). Funded by a Landscape Scale Restoration Program grant from the USDA Forest Service, financial incentives for IPCPPs are available to public and private woodland owners with ten
to one thousand wooded acres in Maine. The program will reimburse up to 50% of the cost based on the number of acres. An average small woodlot may receive up to $400 maximum incentive; larger lots will have larger maximum incentive amounts. The IPCPP provides woodland owners with maps and treatment recommendations for invasive plants. The program’s goal is to address invasive plants that choke out native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers in the eligible woodlands. A corps of natural resource professionals trained through the program’s Invasive Plant Academy will be qualified to develop the IPCPPs. A list of trained plan preparers will be available on the MFS Invasive
Plant Management Program web page at www.maine.gov/ dacf/mfs/projects/invasive_ plant_mgmt/index.html. “IPCPPs are an important tool for managing and controlling invasive plants across our state, and a great resource for landowners,” said DACF Commissioner Amanda Beal. Landowners with approved IPCPPs will also be eligible to apply for the next phase of the program to receive free invasive plant treatment conducted by a contractor hired by the Maine Forest Service. Visit www.maine.gov for the 2021 IPCPP application which is due by 5 p.m. on May 31. To learn more, call MFS Landowner Outreach Forester Andy Shultz at 207-287-4980.

neering at a four-year university. There is a preference for applicants demonstrating an interest and/or actively participating in their Franco-American heritage. The deadline for applications, which are available at www.mainecf.org, is June 1.

Land Protection Grant Awards $250K STATEWIDE The Maine Community Foundation’s Maine Land Protection grant program has awarded $250,000 to eight nonprofit organizations across the state. Launched last year, the program provides grants for land acquisition or land conservation easement projects. The 2020 grantees include Kittery Land Trust Inc., to preserve 30 acres for use as an outdoor center for students, vol-
unteers, teachers, farmers, and diverse members of the town. The application for the next round of Maine Land Protection grants opens June 1; deadline for submission is September 15. Kennebunk Savings to Give Away Tree Saplings KENNEBUNK Kennebunk Savings is giving away 1,871 white pine saplings in honor of their 150th anniversary (the bank was founded in Kennebunk in 1871). The giveaway, taking place at all 17 of their branches, is timed to coincide with Maine Arbor Week, May 17-21. “We have deep roots in this community,” said Bradford C. Paige, President and CEO. “We thought it would be fun to put some new — and literal — roots down as well.” “Our logo is actually based on the old Lafayette Elm tree in Kennebunk,” explains Mike Moloney, Senior Vice President, Corporate Development and Training Manager. “But we’re big fans of trees just generally – they’re steadfast, dependable, and they give back to their surrounding environments.” (The Lafayette Elm tree, formerly located on the grounds of Storer Mansion in Kennebunk, developed Dutch Elm disease in 1965.) The free trees are 4-7 inches, and will be available at all branch locations as long as supplies last. “We wanted to give back to the community in a way that would last for generations,” said Jennifer Radel, Assistant Vice President, PR & Communications manager. For the bank’s 150th celebration, they’re also holding week-long celebrations taking
turns at each of their 17 branch locations, a party that will continue from now until late fall. The bank is also planning a few tree-planting ceremonies with larger specimens, and collab-

What else should I be doing? Thank you! Mike Dear Mike, Copying files to a thumb drive is a good step in the right direction, but there are a couple of other things that you should do as a bare minimum. 1. Check your backups: Connect that thumb drive to a different computer and verify that you can open the files. I can’t tell you how many times I have had someone bring me a backup only to find that the files on the drive are corrupt and unreadable. Even worse, sometimes the actual files are not on the thumb drive, on a shortcut to the original file on their computer. This is why I suggest you test the backup on a computer different

from the one that you made the backup on. 2. Rotate your media: Backing up to one thumb drive for years at a time is not enough. The older your thumb drive gets, the higher the chances are that you files will become corrupt at just the time you need them. If you are saving your files to a thumb drive, by them in pairs and alternate drives each week. That way if your most recent backup fails, you have another that is no more than 2 weeks old. 3. Replace the drives yearly: Again, the older your drive gets, the higher the chance of failure. Don’t trust your important files to old thumb drives, purchase a new set every year. We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

She is healthy and loves having a fuss made over her. Because she’s declawed, a home with no dogs and perhaps very laid-back cats would be best for her. I could spend all day cuddled up on my blankets enjoying the sounds of my people nearby as they make lemonade or watch TV. I also love the simplicity of a summer night as I cuddle with my humans in bed and listen to the peepers outside the windows.” Noodle: “Summers are meant for getting outside and having fun! WAA was among the initial organizations to join the wideranging list of Commemorative Partners supporting the efforts of this congressionally chartered Commemoration, which was established under the Secretary of Defense. Since first becoming a partner in 2012, WAA has had the distinct honor of conducting 2,190 welcome home ceremonies for Vietnam veterans across the country, presenting each veteran a Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin, and thanking them for their service, valor and sacrifice. “As the Nation commemorated National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29, we are grateful to have Commemorative Partners like Wreaths

Buxton Fire Rescue Chief. The workshop featured topics including the legal aspects of fire protection; professionalism and politics; a fire chief’s role in leadership; financial management and planning; a fire chief’s role in coaching, counseling and correcting; training, safety and risk management; incident management; and community and media relations. ~ Sports & News ~ Wells Warriors Shut Out OOB By William Griffith High School Sports Contributor WELLS On May 17, the Wells varsity baseball team picked up a big win at home against Old Orchard Beach. The game started quickly as Old Orchard had the bases loaded at the top of the first but failed to score. Wells scored in the second inning after multiple singles and multiple stolen bases and was up 2-0. Action continued in the fifth inning when Wells scored
a run off of an RBI double and then in the sixth inning they topped it off with a sacrifice fly to score a run. Notable in this game were the number of stolen bases recorded – seven – which is more than most Major League Baseball games! Pitching stats included three wild pitches, five walks and three players hit by pitches. The Wells Warriors won the game 4-0 and are scheduled to face York, Kennebunk and Traip Academy in the weeks ahead.

...HAVEN from page 22 We’re developing a wonderful team of Cattail volunteers to help at our farmhouse and shop, but there’s still room for more team members. As we prepare for the busy summer season, we want to enlist as many volunteers as possible right now! We prefer people who can volunteer five hours per week, but if you can only spare a few hours on a regular basis, we’d welcome your helping hands! If you’re younger and like physical work, call us before spending money for a gym. You’ll get a great workout carrying items
from the first floor of our barn to the third. Cardio, steps, we’ve got it all! You’ll get your body “beach ready,” and you’ll spare our more “mellowed” volunteers lots of knee pain and backaches, as we remain working on the first floor. Experienced cashiers are needed immediately. Our thrift/vintage shop at 1784 Post Road is an amazing place. It’s heaped to the rafters with great inventory, donated by the public to support our No Kill mission of saving homeless and unwanted kitties. Every purchase
helps save kitty lives and provide health care. If you can’t volunteer, at least please shop with us! Open 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday. Donations are received on Saturdays 12-3 p.m. We’re currently seeking donations of garden items, such as benches, lawn furniture, pots, trellises, tools as well as tasteful beach theme décor, furniture ie: bookcases, tables, throw pillows, and lamps with clean shades. If you have a lot of items, call Joyce at 207-229-8314 to schedule an appointment. Thanks!
