York to Open COVID-19 Testing Center June 1 YORK A drive-through COVID19 Testing Center, the first of its kind in York County, will open at York Hospital’s York Walk-In Care location on June 1. With hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, for the months of June and July, this project is a collaboration between York Hospital and the Town of York. While previous plans located the testing site at York High School, further

assessment of both safety and logistical efficiencies by the Hospital and York Police Department resulted in the decision to shift the service to the hospital’s York Walk-In Care, 343 US Route One in York. All patients must call to pre-register at 207-351-2000 and have a signed provider’s referral in order to be tested. However, patients arriving without this documentation, who are symptomatic, or in a caregiver role for

someone at risk or compromised, will be evaluated by Walk-In providers, and if appropriate, given the necessary paperwork. Erich Fogg, PA-C, the hospital’s director of walk-in care, and Amber Harrison, health officer for the town, shared that two primary reasons for coordinating this collaborative drivethrough project are a “spike” in people who are hesitating to See TESTING page 2...

Ophelia had biliary atresia, a life-threatening liver disease, and was in need of a liver transplant. “In the middle of the COVID-19 crisis, with her health and strength declining, she finally received a donor liver and Ophelia was able to have the life-saving transplant,”

said Lizotte. “After weeks of fear and anxiety wondering if the transplant would be rejected, she is now home thanks to God’s love and mercy and the overwhelming prayers from all who shared in her journey.” Holy Spirit Parish’s role in that journey began a few months ago, when the council learned about Ophelia’s story and sprang into action. “When we learned about

Kate Pouliot SOUTH BERWICK It was 2 a.m. in the small town of South Berwick, and Catherine “Kate” Pouliot was helping her neighbor calve out his cows. Despite the deep chill in the air and the pitch-black sky, the young girl found the experience exciting. Pouliot did not grow up thinking she would become a veterinarian. Even so, that early morning experience sparked a love for veterinary science that has pushed her in new directions — and to considerable success. A Marshwood graduate who enrolled in the mixed animal track at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM) at Virginia Tech, Pouliot is poised to receive a Doctor of Veterinary Medi-

Pouliot, who completed a B.S. in animal science from the University of Maine, was drawn to VMCVM because of its new curriculum, which was intro-

duced in 2016. The curriculum enables practical experience sooner, with the goal of improving students’ problem-solving skills and establishing a solid foundation that will empower students in the classroom and beyond. Clinching the deal was Blacksburg’s small-town charm.

“I fell in love with Blacksburg and the campus,” Pouliot said. “It felt like home immediately.” Once enrolled at the veterinary college, Pouliot thrived in good part because of support from mentors who inspired her. Though initially not inclined to specialize while in school, those mentors guided her to a decision to pursue cardiology. During a mentor event at the veterinary college, she met Bill Tyrrell ‘92, a cardiologist who received the college’s Lifetime Achievement Alumni Award in 2019. Businesses Create the Kennebunkport Promise

KENNEBUNKPORT Weeks ago, when Kennebunkport Town Manager Laurie Smith began considering what re-opening would look like for the town, she knew its long history as one of the state’s hospitality centers would need to be carefully considered. To that end, Smith tapped Tina Gordon, general manag-

er of the Nonantum Resort, and Deb Lennon, managing partner of Sandy Pines Campground, Batson River Brewing and Distilling and Vinegar Hill Music Theatre, to lead the newly-formed Kennebunkport Hospitality Task Force. “We appreciated the faith Laurie showed in us,” Lennon said, “and we knew the busi-

We believe it will greatly support the state’s goal of expanded testing, so we can quickly identify cases, isolate, and contact all exposed in an effort to battle COVID-19,” offered Fogg. The collaborative effort goes beyond the Town of York and York Hospital. Amber Harrison has been working closely with the York Police & Fire Departments for logistics and traffic assistance, while York County CDC Liaison, Adam Hartwig and Art Cleaves, York County EMA Director have been instrumental in securing both the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and the many volunteers needed to staff the testing center, beyond that of York Hospital. Volunteers will be joining from University of New England’s College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Harris School of Business in Sanford and University of Maine’s Nursing School graduates. Additionally, Holly Roberts, Executive Director of The York Region Chamber of

Commerce along with Executive Director, Michelle Surdoval of York Community Service Association have been busy reaching out to area businesses to provide lunch for all volunteers. Amber Harrison added, “Offering the drive-thru testing at this time is crucial in continuing to help flatten the curve, as we begin to open our public spaces again in York and all of Maine.” For more information about York’s COVID-19 Testing Center, visit www.yorkhospital. com or contact The York Hospital Friendraising Office at 207351-2385.

~ News ~ Expert Committee to Advise on Economic Recovery AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced that she is convening an Economic Recovery Committee charged with developing recommendations to mitigate the damage to Maine’s economy caused by the ongoing COVID19 pandemic and to jumpstart a long-term economic recovery for Maine people, businesses, and organizations. The thirty-seven member committee, co-chaired by Laurie Lachance, former Maine State Economist and President of Thomas College in Waterville, and Josh Broder, CEO of Tilson, includes representatives of small businesses, non-profits, financial institutions, unions, municipalities, tribal and immigrant communities, hospitality and tourism industries, and educational institutions as well as a bipartisan delegation of legislative designees. “This emergency has devastated families and our economy in unprecedented ways. We will have to be strategic in our investments, harness all of the diverse capacity in state, and be competitive in our approach to stimulus,” said Broder. “As we have seen so many times in our history, with focus and hard work, Maine can and

Those recommendations should address essential issues such as: Strengthening Maine’s key industries and small businesses; Strengthening workforce development; Improving opportunities for lower-and middle-income families; Expanding economic opportunities for rural communities; Attracting new investments and innovations in key sectors such as business, communication, health care, recreation and education. The committee will not address public health matters, including the reopening timeframe; however, it will provide guidance on the importance of good public health as a precondition for good economic growth. ~ News ~ Updated KHS Graduation Plans KENNEBUNK Over the past few months, RSU 21 has considered many plans for graduation very carefully, consulted with a number of stakeholders, and heard from a great number of people in the community. Under guidance from the Maine Department of Education and after exploring a variety of options and a variety of venues, the high school is moving forward with a plan that preserves as many KHS traditions as possible and directly involves as many people as possible. The Kennebunk High School graduation will take place at KHS on Sunday, June 7 beginning at 2 p.m. as originally scheduled. The goal is for the class of 2020 to have a communal experience and for families to be able to witness the commemoration of their graduation. The entire ceremony will

be live streamed so that families have the option of watching remotely. Speeches by the valedictorian, salutatorian, and faculty member will be pre-recorded and shared ahead of the event. Additionally, families will be given the opportunity to park in the main parking lot at KHS to watch the ceremony from their cars. A stage is being set up in front of the main entrance. Graduates and up to two family members will be organized into groups in socially-distanced pods on the field adjacent to the parking lot in accordance with DOE and CDC guidelines. Graduates are required to stay in their cars until their group is called by a staff member to the pods. Graduates will wear masks, as will all other guests who are in the car. The students will walk across the stage and then return to their cars with their family members where

they will stay until the end of graduation. Families who have concerns about attending the ceremony may request to have their graduates pick up diplomas at Kennebunk High School during the week of June 8. They should indicate that they will not be at the ceremony when they drop off their materials on May 30 or June 2; when they pick up their caps and gowns on June 5; or by emailing or calling Susan Cressey at scressey@rsu21.net or 207-9851110 x 1140. A videographer will record the June 7 event for graduates and their families and later take footage from multiple sources to produce a professionally edited See GRADUATION page 24...

Despite Stage Production Cancellations, Hackmatack Summer Camps Return

BERWICK Hackmatack Playhouse announced that it is cancelling its main stage productions for the summer of 2020 for the first time in 47 consecutive summers of providing theater from a barn on a farm in Berwick. “With a heavy heart I am announcing the cancellation of our 2020 season,” said Michael Guptill, Hackmatack’s owner and son of the man who founded the theater on the family’s 17th century farm. “We did not see a safe — or economically sound — way forward and the health and safety of our actors, our staff, and our patrons must come first,” Guptill added.

Maine’s guidelines do, however, allow for day camps, so the theater plans to run the summer theatre camp weekdays from June 22 to July 3. This will allow campers ages 7-13 to have the run of the barn and fields as they play games and rehearse for “Schoolhouse Rock Jr.,” an energetic, upbeat show that will be produced on July 3. “We are happy we can still run the camp and in this way bring arts to children and their families during this period,” said Sarah Hashem, the camp’s director Youngsters who want to attend camp at Hack-ma-camp, as it is called, will have the run of

the fields and theater this year. In a letter to supporters and in a facebook posting, Hackmatack acknowledged the challenge the theater is facing as a result of cancelling its three main stage shows. “The current situation has put Hackmatack Playhouse in a very precarious financial situation,” the letter said. Preparation for a theatre season begins months before opening night and Hackmatack invested heavily in the 2020 season, the theater noted. As a result Hackmatack is asking those who already bought tickets to choose between making a donation, getting credit for next

sad the theatre is unable to open in 2020, the mood was upbeat and the focus was on the future, while honoring its historic past. The cocktail hour began with a toast from Executive Artistic Director Brad Kenney. “During World War II, our predecessor Maude Hartwig had to cancel one season. She was recently widowed and single-handedly managed to reopen the following year, and to also keep the Playhouse alive throughout the duration of the war. If Maude could do that by herself, all of us together can certainly get through this. We must remain strong and look

More information is available from the Hackmatack Box Office at 207-698-1807. As he searches for a silver lining, Guptill says that a cancelled season may mean a oncein-a-lifetime trip with his wife. “This will be an opportunity to take my wife on her first summer vacation for decades,” said Guptill. summer, or receiving a refund. “Given our financial position at this point, this option may take some time,” Guptill admitted, adding, “Hackmatack appreciates the generosity of so many folks over the decades, and we thank you so much for any additional generosity you might be able to provide in this time of crisis.” This year’s season could be deferred so Hackmatack produces “The Foreigner,” “Legally Blonde,” and “The Spitfire Grill” next year, Howard said, but noted the future is still unclear. “We will all have to see what hap-

forward to brighter days. But in the meantime, tonight is a night to be optimistic, to celebrate our alternative opening and raise a glass to the future of Ogunquit Playhouse!” Ogunquit Playhouse will focus on reimagining the 2020 season to carry on its mission and fundraising efforts to ensure the financial viability of the historic non-profit theatre. Public support is crucial in this time of global health and economic crisis. For more information on how to contribute and to stay connected during the coming year, visit www.ogunquitplayhouse.org.

~ People Helping People ~ Caffé Prego to Open with Fundraiser OGUNQUIT Beginning June 5, 3-8 p.m. and continuing through Sunday, June 7, 12-8 p.m., 100% of Caffé Prego’s take-out sales will be donated to the non-profit organization that serves the emergency food needs of families through a network of more than 500 partner agencies from their two distribution centers in Auburn and Hampden. In addition to the proceeds raised by the restaurant, which is owned by Donato Tramuto and Jeff Porter, the Tramuto Foundation, also based in Ogunquit, will donate a matching amount. The Foundation was created in 2001 following the death of Donato and Jeff’s close friends on September 11. “For several years the Tramuto Foundation has supported Good Shepherd Food Bank’s mission to help underserved communities throughout Maine. Now the need is greater than ever as many more fami-

lies are facing increased financial distress because of job loss and the loss of school and daycare-sponsored meals for their children,” Tramuto said. “Our hope is that with Caffé Prego’s opening weekend sales, combined the Foundation’s matching donation, we can make a real difference in the lives of Maine families who are struggling during these troubling and uncertain times.” The Food Bank is meeting evolving needs head-on by shifting their food sourcing and distribution models to keep as much nutritious food flowing as possible statewide. Good Shepherd Food Bank has forged partnerships with L.L. Bean to pack emergency food boxes, which contain shelf-stable products and bags of produce to supplement a family’s monthly food needs, as well as a partnership with Pineland Farms Dairy to take excess milk supply from local dairy farmers and make cheese.

“We estimate that $6.3M in additional resources will be needed over a six-month period to help Mainers struggling with hunger as a result of the COVID19 crisis,” stated Kristen Miale, president of Good Shepherd Food Bank. “A recent survey indicated 90 percent of the food pantries we serve are seeing an increase in people seeking help. This donation could not have come at a better time, as retail donations are down and the Food Bank has turned to purchasing food for distribution.” In order to encourage safe physical distancing, Caffé Prego’s online ordering at www.cafeprego.com will be available and is the preferring method of ordering. Phone-in orders will also be available at 207-646-7734 and guests may place in-person orders at the restaurant’s order window at 44 Shore Road. For more information, go to www.tramutofoundation.com.

Generosity Abounds at Conservation Trust Food Drive ARUNDEL It’s sometimes easy to forget, amidst all the stress and upheaval that people are struggling with these days in this Great Pandemic, that really good things can still happen when people come together to work for a common cause. That’s what happened on May 16 when Arundel residents, businesses and community leaders responded so positively to the Arundel Conservation Trust in our ACT Food Drive, asking people for food to be given to those in need during these tough times. The ACT Food Drive was a huge success with over 2,000 pounds of much needed food, staples, and canned goods going to the Community Outreach Services (“COS”) food distribution center at Vinegar Hill Music

Theater in Arundel. Volunteers from ACT picked up food donations at people’s homes, and at donation containers at the Arundel Town Transfer Center, the Arundel Fire Station, J Brothers Variety Store and at ACT’s Welch Woods Preserve trailhead. The Arundel Historical Society donated a big supply of frozen home-made baked beans and pasta sauce, which is usually only available at their (now suspended) monthly Saturday Night Suppers. This event even included some anonymous stand-outs who helped make the event a success: The town official who packed the bed of his pickup truck with a lot of food; A lady who lives on Limerick Road who called Arundel’s

General Assistance Director and asked where to bring 18 bags of food for the Drive; Employees at the Town Transfer Station whose donations helped top of the 2,000pound goal; Someone called the “Great PB&J Donor”, who donated a tasty assortment of peanut butter and jelly. Usually at this time of year, ACT leaders and volunteers are busy building new trails and doing maintenance work on conservation properties in Arundel but since the pandemic makes that impossible now, the food drive was a great way for members and supporters to help those in need as a tangible demonstration of building a greater community among residents and businesses in Arundel.

Bank Provides Remote-Learning for Local Schools YORK COUNTY Local students are getting a free education in how to manage their money. Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution is working with Banzai, a national award-winning financial literacy program, to make an online, remote-friendly curriculum available to 12 schools in York and Cumberland Counties completely free. “Banzai is a web-based financial literacy program. Kids get their own accounts, and they work through assignments that are based on real life,” Morgan Vandagriff, co-founder of Banzai, said. “But because Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution is sponsoring it, local schools

get it for free. More than ever, it’s important that kids develop sound financial skills to prepare them for the real world, and Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution realizes that and they’re doing something about it.” Banzai is an interactive, online program supplemented by printed workbooks and aligns with Maine state curriculum requirements for personal finance education. The course work can be completed on any internet enabled computer or mobile device, and teachers are able to monitor student progress remotely. It has become the largest program of its kind, servicing more than 60,000 teachers nationwide. Saco & Biddeford Savings

Institution has offered time, money, industry experience, and a variety of resources to help local schools teach personal finance in the classroom. Students using the program are exposed to real-life scenarios where they learn to pay bills and balance a budget – but it’s not always easy. Students must learn to manage unexpected expenses such as parking tickets, interest charges and overdraft fees. The educational program also introduces students to auto loans, bank statements, entertainment costs, savings and more. Teachers interested in using the Banzai program can visit sbsavings.teachbanzai.com or call 888-8-BANZAI.

the Stimulus Package give-away in March saying, “We know people are struggling right now. It’s unprecedented times and we can relate as we live here and are a Maine small business. We’ve decided to take $10,000 in income we received as well as help from Great Falls Marketing as a sponsor and give it back to listeners. Over the next several weeks we’ll give $100 to 100 different Mainers to help them during these tough times.” Listeners can win a $100 simply by listening to the station and staying informed. Additionally, each winner will receive a gift card to a local Maine business including Rising Tide, Side by Each Brewing, El Rodeo, Bubba’s Frye’s, and more. The station has also given out free radio time to local Maine businesses and hosted many of them on air in the form of interviews. “We plan to survive this in the business sense and we want to help as many people and businesses as possible pull through as well” said Deelon.

MaineHealth and Partners Bring Back Some Services YORK COUNTY MaineHealth (which includes Southern Maine Health Centers) announced enhanced safety measures and set criteria for which patients would be seen as it restores some services in accordance with state guidelines during the pandemic. The first phase of Maine Gov. This first phase provides an opportunity to address the needs of those patients for whom waiting could negatively impact their health and wellbeing, explained Joan Boomsma, MD, chief medical officer of MaineHealth. “We will focus on caring for those patients whose pending procedures and office visits were postponed in March, but for whom waiting longer at this time could be clinically significant.” Boomsma said decisions about which procedures and office visits to undertake will be made by clinicians, taking into account each patient’s particular needs. Boomsma said providers will reach out to those patients who should have their procedure or appointment rescheduled. Additionally, she said patients with new or worsening symptoms should contact their provider. MaineHealth continues to maintain readiness in the event of a surge in patients with

Community Programs Serving Local Aging Population YORK Serving our Seniors (SOS), York Maine, is an organization of dedicated community members who care about the health, COVID-19, and as such is not completely resuming normal operations. In addition to limiting the number of procedures and appointments to be rescheduled, MaineHealth organizations will be maintaining capacity and readiness for COVID-19 patients. For those patients whose office visits are not deemed time-sensitive and therefore have not been rescheduled, Boomsma said telehealth visits remain a safe and effective means for receiving care. For those who do come in, MaineHealth has issued the following guidelines to assure that care will be delivered as safely as possible during this time: Social distancing measures and masking; Screening for COVID-19 symptoms; Separating respiratory care centers for the care of COVID-19 patients; Care team members will be screened daily for symptoms and kept from the workplace if they show signs of infection.

Health & Fitness Contact Tracing Expanded to Limit Spread of COVID-19 AUGUSTA Governor Janet Mills announced that the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is significantly expanding contact tracing by increasing the number of skilled staff and volunteers, harnessing innovative technology, and securing social services to help people with COVID-19 maintain selfisolation. The State’s expanded contact tracing parallels its major increase in testing capacity. Contact tracing is the process of identifying, assessing, and protecting people who have been exposed to a disease to prevent their transmitting infection to others. Taken together, testing and contract tracing enable Maine to identify, investigate, and isolate individuals with COVID-19 to prevent its spread in the absence of effective treatment or a vaccine. “Expanded testing and contact tracing are critical to both identifying and limiting the spread of COVID-19 in Maine,” said Governor Janet Mills. “By increasing the number of people conducting contact tracing and by deploying the new Sara Alert system to assist us, we can improve our efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus, protect the health of Maine people, and support our goal of safely restarting Maine’s economy.” “Contact tracing has been an important part of our response to COVID-19 since the first case was identified in Maine,” said Dr. Nirav. D. Shah, Director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC). “Enhancing our contact tracing technology and workforce now allows us to make best use of expanded testing capacity at our lab.” Maine’s contact tracing strategy has three components: Increasing Personnel The Maine CDC currently has a contact tracing and case investigation team of approximately 30 people. It expects to more than quadruple this team as needed through the following steps: Immediately enlisting the help of 50 trained volunteers, who have offered their skills through Maine Responds, a system to tap into health care, public health, and emergency volunteers to respond to emergency situations. These volunteers will assist for at least two months and will start training

the week of June 1. Begin hiring up to 125 contracted staff over time for up to 12 months to supplement Maine CDC’s work. This hiring will be staggered based on COVID-19 trend data and will include those with proficiency in multiple languages.

the new system, Maine CDC is also working with partners to improve it, including implementing language translations for nonEnglish speaking individuals. Maine CDC began using Sara Alert last week and already has logged 345 contacts in the system as of May 25.

Deploying Sara Alert System Maine CDC has deployed a new tool called Sara Alert to support monitoring and reporting of COVID-19 in Maine. The Sara Alert system, which is also used by several other states, allows individuals who have been diagnosed or potentially exposed to COVID-19 to report daily symptoms through web, text, email, or calls. The tool provides real-time insights and increased reporting capability to support containment of the virus. It also enables hospitals and health systems to conduct contact tracing for their own employees. As it deploys

Expanding Social Supports Staying apart from people for a period of time to protect the public health is a challenge for all, let alone for those who may have low incomes or struggle with housing, food security, transportation, mental or substance use disorders, or access to affordable healthcare and childcare. To address these challenges, DHHS is expanding its social supports for people isolated or quarantined because of exposure to COVID-19 by contracting with Community Action Programs (CAPs). Once finalized, these arrangements will offer individuals

in isolation or quarantine social supports such as delivered meals, prescriptions, and behavioral health counselling. DHHS will also contract with Wabanaki Public Health for support for Native Americans. It will engage

Catholic Charities, which operates the State’s refugee program, to help with language translation for non-English speakers. Maine DHHS will also assign a point person to coordinate this work statewide.

Jackson continues his work with the school and community through student government, mission trips, playing basketball and volunteering at the Berwick Recreation Center and at a local summer camp. Jackson’s mission trips have brought him to cities like Washington, DC and Detroit, MI where he worked with the Salvation Army and helped to build a community

Legislature Designates York River AUGUSTA The Maine State Senate gave unanimous approval to a Joint Resolution, sponsored by Rep. Lydia Blume, D-York, and co-sponsored by Sen. Mark Lawrence, D-Eliot, and Reps. Patty Hymanson, D-York, Michele Meyer, D-Eliot, Tiffany Roberts, D-South Berwick, and Deane Rykerson, D-Kittery, which supports federal designation of the York River as a part of the National Wild and Scenic River System. The measure was

passed by the Maine House in March. Inclusion of the York River in the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System requires the approval of Congress and will give the communities along the waterway access to federal financial and technical assistance to preserve it in its natural state. The Joint Order states the Legislature’s official support for Congress granting the York River and its tributaries status as part of the national system.

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

BUSINESS & FINANCE $20+ Million for Maine Fishing Industry

WASHINGTON,DCU.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King, and Representatives Chellie Pingree and Jared Golden announced that Maine lobstermen, fishermen, and other Mainers working in the seafood supply chain will receive a total of $20,166,476. The funding represents the fifthhighest amount being awarded among 31 recipients. Senator Collins and Representative Pingree worked with bipartisan groups of

their colleagues from coastal states to secure $300 million in the CARES Act specifically to assist fishermen and fisheryrelated businesses such as dealers, processors, and aquaculture operations affected by COVID19. Collins, King, Pingree, and Golden urged the administration to quickly release this urgently needed financial assistance. “The hardworking men and women in Maine’s lobster and fishing industries are facing severe financial difficulties due to the pandemic that

has closed restaurants and reduced exports,” said the Maine delegation. “This targeted relief will provide crucial support for workers, help our seafood supply chains survive, and assist the families and communities that depend on this important economic sector.” The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is allocating funds proportionately based on a multi-year average of the total annual revenue of each region’s commercial fishing, charter fishing, processor,

and aquaculture sectors. This method allows NOAA to utilize data that are readily available while accounting for regional variability in the size of commercial, charter, processor, and aquaculture industries. These funds may be awarded on a rolling basis, and within a fishing season, to ensure rapid delivery of funds during the pandemic. NOAA has also released guidance on its rollout plan, including more information on eligibility and how this funding will be distributed. In general,

Protect Yourself from Tax Season Scam Calls Tax season has become a prime time for phone scams. Of the almost 9.6 billion robocalls that have already been placed nationwide this year, more than 40% have been scams. These phone scams are run by fraudsters armed with robocalling technology that enables them to make tens of thousands of calls per minute with the sole purpose of deceiving people and stealing their money. According to the FCC, people reported losing more than $667 million to various scams in 2019, with phone calls being the number one way people were contacted by scammers. At T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile, we want to help customers stay safe from the increasing threat of scam calls that wireless customers receive every day. Here’s what

customers should know: 1. The IRS may call people, but it will usually send bills by mail first. If the IRS does call you, know that the it will never demand immediate payment over the phone or threaten action from law enforcement. Tax season is already stressful enough—if you receive an urgent and/or threatening phone call regarding your taxes, it’s definitely a scam! 2. Beware of Caller ID Spoofing! As scam protection gets smarter, so do fraudsters. Many scammers will use a technique called “Caller ID Spoofing,” disguising their phone number to make it look like a local number so people are more likely to answer. If you receive a call from a local number that you’re not familiar with and want to play it safe, let it go to voicemail and, if needed, call

back later. 3. The suspicious Facebook message from that person you’ve never met? Probably a scam. Phone calls aren’t the only weapon scammers have in their arsenal—they can contact you by email, text, and social media. If you receive a suspicious message through one of these channels, that’s your first clue that you’re being targeted. The IRS will never contact taxpayers by email, text message or social media. 4. Your wireless service provider may have solutions for you already. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently implemented new standards for wireless service providers in order to help fight scam calls—especially spoofing. With new technology, network operators can verify that calls are truly coming from the number displayed on Caller ID. Of course, not all robocalls are nuisance or scam calls. An unknown call could be a reminder for a doctor’s appointment, or a notification of a package delivery. Thankfully, many network operators have solutions in place to help customers verify calls. Customers should ask their operator what solutions they have or look for third-party solutions to verify who’s calling. Taking these basic steps

can help keep you—and your money—safe from scammers this tax season, but it won’t guarantee 100% protection. Ultimately, being educated about various types of fraudulent scams, taking preventative steps to protect personal information, and making smart, informed choices can help you outsmart potential scams during the tax season. Remember, if it seems questionable, it probably is!

Home Sales Ease During Pandemic AUGUSTA Despite a pandemic-fueled wane in the sales of single-family existing homes, values in Maine increased double digits last month. According to Maine Listings, Realtors sold 194 fewer homes in April 2020 compared to April 2019, which is a decrease of 15.41%. The median sales price (MSP) jumped 12.29% to $235,800, comparing April 2020 to April 2019. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “The April 2020 statistics show the beginning impact of the pandemic pause on Maine’s real

estate sales,” says Tom Cole, 2020 President of the Maine Association of REALTORS® and Managing Broker of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate The Masiello Group in Brunswick. “Because real estate transactions take 30-45 days to close, contracts written before the pandemic have likely now been completed. “Recent statistics show that Maine’s for-sale inventory is down 19% compared to a year ago. REALTORS® from across Maine indicate that buyers are plentiful and multiple offer situations are prevalent due to the historic low mortgage interest rates and the constrained inventory levels. Nationally in April 2020, sales decreased 15.5% compared to April a year ago. The National Association of Realtors also cited a rise in April’s home prices — 7.3% — to a national MSP of $288,700. In April 2020, the regional Northeast experienced a sales dip of 18.2%, while the regional MSP increased 8.7% to $312,500 compared to April 2019.

If you can help, we sure could use it! Once we’re open we’ll need cashiers and shopper assistants to help us keep our new store efficient. We will be setting up many departments including all the most popular clothing and housewares but we will also have a tool department, craft supply area,

Animal Welfare Society KENNEBUNK This handsome boy is named Monty and he is looking to be your one-and-only. He is a great companion, affectionate, friendly and fun, yet he isn’t too needy – he can be independent and do his own thing, especially if that involves purring up a storm while catnapping. Monty is a great pal, so if you’re looking to add a cat to your heart and home, perhaps Monty is the one! To learn more, visit www.animalwelfaresociety.org. Monty is available for adoption at AWS but due to COVID19, we have a new adoption process. Cats are available for adoption during this time so please call to make an appointment if you are seriously interested in adopting. We understand that folks may want to meet several cats to get to know them before making a decision and that will be possible during your appointment. We ask that you only make an appointment if you are seriously interested in adopting. Adoption appointments can be made by calling 207-985-3244 x 125 between the hours of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please know, voicemails will not count so please be sure to speak to a staff member to schedule your appointment. Also please understand that appointments will be limited to five each day to promote social distancing. Hard to believe it’s been ten weeks since we made the difficult decision to close our doors to visitors and postpone our in-person programming. Despite not having visitors, we are humming along. We are still taking in stray pets and we continue to accept pets from owners who are no longer able to care for them. All pets that have come to AWS are doted on by staff, receive medical

care and training (as needed) and then go up for adoption! So, despite the situation during these past weeks, we still have many reasons to smile as adoptions have been steady. In fact, 176 pets are now living their best lives in their new homes! We thank our adopters who have graciously adjusted to the “new normal” of adoptions by appointment, which will continue at AWS for the time being. Here are a few stories shared by families who took adopted pets since COVID-19 changed everything. These pets are happy at home, living their best lives! Coronavirus can’t stop us from helping pets find happy new homes! Bonito: Adopted March 20. “My husband and I have been talking about adding a puppy to our family for awhile now. Bonito instantly caught our eye - he was just so cute! I couldn’t believe that we got an appointment to meet him! My son and Hunter (Bonito) instantly became best pals. He plays lots of fetch and chase in our backyard with his “person,” our 2 year old son.” Moxie: Adopted March 20. “Hello, I want to thank all of you for making Friday, March 20, a magical day for me and Moxie. She loves the Island and especially the beach. She knows how to fetch, sit, poop and pee outside and come when I call her. We are getting plenty of exercise, she crashed at 8 p.m. last night.

Your donations of canned cat food, clumping litter, cat treats and toys are always needed and welcome. Please bag them and leave them outside the door of our shelter. Turtle Crossing Under Route 236 ELIOT The Maine Turnpike, Maine DOT, and the Town of Eliot are partnering to build a turtle crossing under Route 236. A culvert along Route 236 will be turned into a wider, taller tunnel so that turtles can cross underneath. Low fences will also be added alongside to keep them from traveling over the roadway. Traffic may be detoured along

Route 101 and Beech Road as well. A combination of portable message boards and detour signs will be used to re-route traffic. The project will begin either later this fall or next spring depending on the availability of the culvert materials. For more information, visit the Southern Maine Planning & Development Commission at www.smpdc.org.

Bear: Adopted March 20. “I adopted Bear in March and he is slowly adjusting to city life! He has a brother named Wally that he loves to play with, and he makes so many friends when we go to the park.” Rosie: Adopted April 8. This update was especially meaningful for AWS staff as Rosie was very near and dear to our hearts. She had spent more than five months with us, waiting for that just right family to come along! Cinder: Adopted May 10. “Cinder (now Ruby) loves her new home. She is adjusting well. Ruby loves to be brushed and petted. She does not appear to be overwhelmed or stressed out at all. She is sleeping and eating fine and has not even missed her litter box once. She is friendly and affectionate but not needy. Share your Happy Homes story at www.animalwelfaresociety.org/happy-homes-update/. Thank you for your continued support in these uncertain times. Your donations keep us going, helping the pets and people in our community. For those of you cleaning house, thank you for thinking of us! However, we are not able to accept any used donations at this time, including old litter boxes, crates, carriers or opened bags of food. We also cannot accept

towels, sheets, blankets or pillows. Please know that we have plenty of bedding on hand to keep our pets cozy and comfy. Thank you for understanding! ...POULIOT from page 1 Abbott, Pouliot’s hands-on experience in the college’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital proved to be especially meaningful. Along with helping patients and their owners, Pouliot said that she is proudest of the relationships she built with her peers while at the college. Such connections helped them work through challenges together. With degree in hand, Pouliot is headed to Texas A&M University to complete a small animal rotating internship, aiming for a cardiology residency afterward. “I’d love to be able to give back through mentoring,” she said, “because I’ve had such great mentors here.”

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Mame, Cut and paste or copy and paste is the process of copying text and/or pictures from one place on your computer and placing the text and/or pictures in another place (like a document or email). When you cut and paste, you are removing the original text and/or pictures (cutting them out) and placing them in your new location. When you copy and paste, you are making a copy of the original, leaving it in place and putting the copy in the new location. Exactly how you cut and paste is explained in detail, with illustrations on my website at https://asktcl.com/ basics/how-to-copy-paste/. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, In my computer when I click on the bookmarks tab at the top of my page, in the drop down list, I cannot delete any bookmarks. I use windows 10 classic shell, and Firefox. There was a time when I could right click on an unused bookmark and then

delete it, now I can’t. Nothing happens when I right click. Is there a way to fix it? Mary

click “Organize” in the menu bar and “Delete” in the drop down menu. Elizabeth

Dear Mary, While I can’t tell you how to fix this problem without first figuring out what is causing the right-click to stop working, I can give you some other methods of deleting bookmarks in Firefox. If you want to delete a single bookmark in Firefox, first, click on the bookmark to go to that page, then click on the star icon as is you were going to bookmark the page, and click on the button that says, “Remove Bookmark”. Another way, which also allows you to delete more than one bookmark at a time is to click on the Bookmarks button and click on “Show All Bookmarks”. Select one or more bookmarks to be deleted, then

Dear Computer Lady, Hi... I’m a long time fan. Thanks for your newsletter and web site, great info! The other day I was listening on the radio to a tech show and the host said that once you get Win 10 that you no longer need a virus/ malware protection program because they have “finally” made the Windows Defender do what it is supposed to do. And that it protects the computer faster than any virus protector can and it works at the very heart of your internet connection. And that another virus protector would slow your machine down. I have never been without virus protection and am a little leery of removing my program. Can this work? Thanks in ad-

vance, Ginnie Dear Ginnie, While the Windows Defender program that comes with every version of Windows is better than no antivirus, tests show that it does not perform as well as many other security programs. If you want to see for yourself, you can check out the independent tests of Anti-Virus software at www.av-comparatives.org/dynamic-tests/. I will continue to use my antivirus software with Windows 10. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have backed up my files and system on carbonate. Is

this adequate before I re-install Windows 10. Thanks, A

Dear A, Yes, as long as you have all your important files backed up on Carbonite, you will have them available to you in the event you lose files during the Windows 10 re-install. I would check Carbonite first to make sure your files are available, then go ahead with the Windows 10 reinstallation. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Getting to Know Some of Our Real Estate Professionals! Joanne Stone | joannestonebroker@gmail.com | 207-337-2359 How long in the business of real estate, and what led you to this career? 35 Years... had been working for Maine Post & Beam selling custom-built homes... decided to get licensed to help find land for clients on which to build their dream. What energizes you in real estate? The fact that every transaction is so different from the next energizes me... always a new challenge. What advice would you give to your teenage self? To grow in confidence of my skills and to never allow myself to be bullied. One behavior or trait that you think most attributes to your success in real estate? If you hire me to accomplish a task, I will get the job done. I stand accountable for my word. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you and what’s a hidden talent? People don’t realize what a homemaker I really am... and that I am quite content alone. Hidden talent: I am secure in myself and have learned from mistakes and choices made over the years. Best advice you were ever given? Give people permission to shine!

Josh Lagasse | josh@lagasseteam.com | 207-251-3701 How long in the business of real estate, and what led you to this career? I purchased my first home in Gorham in 2012 after spending three years overpaying for rent in Portland. I was intrigued by the home buying process and decided to get my real estate license to learn more. What started as a way to become a more informed buyer, soon developed into a full-time career change from corporate insurance. Since then I’ve never looked back! I have committed myself to helping buyers and sellers be as informed as they can be throughout their own home-buying or selling process! What energizes you in real estate? I love working on behalf of my clients to make their home-buying or selling process as seamless as possible. I have the knowledge and tools to navigate the whole process beginning to end and truly enjoy working through any challenges that arise throughout the transaction. I get to be a daily problem solver, while my clients get to experience the smooth transaction they deserve. And with each success I become more motivated to make it happen for others, too! What advice would you give to your teenage self? If I’m being honest, I would tell my teenage self to buy as much real estate in my hometown of Wells as possible and sit on it until 2020, then call myself to list this year. One behavior or trait that you think most attributes to your success in real estate? I take on everyone’s problems and treat them as though they are my own. You’re not purchasing a home, WE are, you just get to live in it after we close. I’m in the trenches with you every step of the way from beginning to end.

Three words friends use to describe you? Count-on-able, successful, loving.

Carmen Lessard | carmenmlessard@gmail.com | 207-590-8655 How long in the business of real estate, and what led you to this career? A little over 15 years. Honestly I wanted to try something new and had been in the hospitality industry for years, and run my own site selection/event planning business right before I entered into real estate. What energizes you in real estate? I love helping the older person who is stressed, being their confidant and friend, and helping them to laugh and enjoy the process. Heck, they make me pie and muffins! I like to educate the young buyers so they feel good about their decisions. I love my families and getting their Christmas cards that show how fast the kids are growing. I am blessed with wonderful clients and enjoy lots of hugs. I like to be a strong negotiator. I like to problem solve.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you and what’s a hidden talent? In 2007 during college, I performed an acoustic guitar and vocal version of a song by a then-unknown artist named Taylor Swift in front of a couple thousand people at UMaine in Orono for a competition charity event, and won! Best advice you were ever given? My father used to say, “If you’re going to do something, do it right or don’t do it at all.” In other words, don’t take on a project or client unless you can promise 100% of your attention to it to see things through. Three words friends use to describe you? Knowledgable, honest, responsive.

What advice would you give to your teenage self? Don’t doubt yourself. Just do what you know, what makes you happy, what your gut tells you, and take risks. One behavior or trait that you think most attributes to your success in real estate? Full service in the sense of time committed, communication, truly watching out for my client’s best interest, and going the extra mile. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you and what’s a hidden talent? I went on a trip to Puerto Rico by myself and repelled an 80 foot waterfall, hiked a mountain stream, and zip-lined five levels of the rainforest, all while being afraid of heights, can’t swim, and not prepared. Hidden talent... I enjoy throwing clay on a potter’s wheel and am the messiest at it, ending up with clay in places on my clothes and body where no one else would believe! Best advice you were ever given? You don’t always get to be the colonels in life, win the elections, and shine. Sometimes you just have to be the tough-working, unsung sergeant, and know that you are doing and being the best you can be even when no one notices. Three words friends use to describe you? Bubbly, high energy, thoughtful.
