Local Author Comes Full Circle YORK Thirty years ago, at age 19, Jody Clark went to see the new John Cusack movie, “Say Anything.” The movie, and in particular, Cusack’s character (Lloyd Dobler) not only resonated with Jody, but inspired him to want to write his own movie with high hopes of John Cusack coming to Maine to star in it. “It’s laughable and slightly embarrassing to think how stupid and naïve I was back

then,” he said. At the time, the screenplay was never completed. After writing 20-30 pages, it was so horrible that he lit the whole thing on fire and never wrote another word for eleven years. “All of the great ideas I had in my head just weren’t coming through onto the paper, so I lit it on fire and gave up.” Fast-forward to 2019, not only has Jody written nine screenplays, but is in the process

of turning them into novels and self-publishing them under his company name – Vacationland Books. As of now, he’s turned five of his scripts into novels, and by far, his most popular is a trilogy which he calls, “The Soundtrack to My Life.” The trilogy is a creative blend of fact and fiction and is loosely based on him and his friends growing up in York See CLARK page 4...

The Smiths said the only chance to save Spencer’s life is through an experimental clinical trial, but $1 million must be raised to fund the research. They have set a goal of raising $500,000 for the research, but still have a ways to go. “At just two years old, our beautiful son, Spencer, was diagnosed with Sanfilippo Syndrome. 15th Annual Kennebunkport Festival June 4 KENNEBUNKPORT Since 2004, the Kennebunkport Festival has been a fun, delicious way for friends and neighbors to kick off the busy summer season in Kennebunkport. This year marks the 15th annual week-long celebration, considered by many as one of the best events in Maine. This year’s festival will showcase nine major events, and eleven Art of Dining dinners in local homes. Events feature Maine’s top chefs, artists, musicians, and dance parties all to benefit local charities. Once again, the 2019 Kennebunkport Festival is being orchestrated by local volunteers who have been meeting for over a year to coordinate details and garner support from sponsors to

make the festival possible. The continued goal is to generate excitement in the community, highlight local art, music, and cuisine, and raise significant funds for local charities. The Festival has become a much-anticipated salute to summer, attracting locals and visitors to celebrate the plethora of talent that exists in our vibrant community in early June, before

BERWICK For the sixth year in a row, the members of Charles S. Hatch Post #79 will host the Berwick Car Show from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 2, at the Berwick Town Hall, 11 Sullivan Square. This singularly seminal event has become very wellknown and draws large crowds and more than 100 participants (i.e. motor vehicles) from across New England who vie for top honors as the best in show for their vehicle class. This noteworthy car show spotlights cars, trucks, customs and motorcycles and everything in between, with dozens of awards handed out based on the votes cast by the families, friends and car show enthusiasts in attendance. (Rain date is the

following Sunday, 9 June, same time and location). This year’s featured car is a 1976 Pontiac Trans Am, owned by Dick Hall and originally owned and purchased by his father, a veteran of WWII. This year also marks the 100th anniversary of the American Legion, which was founded in March 1919 in Paris, France by U.S. World War I military personnel. The Legion has been instrumental in the creation of a number of major institutions of American society, including the formation of the Department of Veterans Affairs, creation of the U.S. Flag Code and passage of the GI bill. ‘Brave New World’ Opens at Counting House Museum SOUTH BERWICK A century before social media and search engines consumed our waking hours, the spellbinding power of radio and film caught our imaginations and made us a nation of listeners and watchers. Brave New World: The Wireless Age Begins is an

exhibition exploring the cutting-edge technology of the early 20th century, which transformed the way Americans thought, wrote, talked, danced and sang. The exhibit opens at the Counting House Museum in South Berwick on Saturday, June 1, 1-4 p.m. and will run through October on weekend afternoons. The public is invited and admission is free of charge. Astonishing inventions with roots in the 1800s, like the telegraph and telephone, vastly expanded the scope and speed of communication. But after 1900, advances in radio and cinema sparked a revolution in mass communication and accelerated the pace of change to a dizzying degree, much as we feel digital technology has today. “Hunger for connections—linking us faster, farther, longer, deeper— was a driving force behind much of the early 20th-century technology represented here, commented exhibit curator Nina Maurer. “That same force compels us now. The question we ask, glancing back, is whether those long-obsolete devices changed us for the better.

The “talking machineâ€? — what we now call radio — brought the world into our living rooms. Among the early 20th-century devices from the collections of the Old Berwick Historical Society that are part of the exhibit is a 1927 Atwater Kent cabinet radio, one of the first radios to use household current. Visitors can listen to an excerpt from the first broadcast of the period’s most famous radio drama, The Shadow, narrated by a young Orson Welles. Kodak Brownie cameras, the first to be marketed to children, are also included in the exhibit, along with a PathĂŠ motion-picture camera of the type used to produce early silent films like The Perils of Pauline. A film clip from comedian Buster Keaton’s 1928 classic The Cameraman will be on view as well. The Counting House Museum is Located at 2 Liberty St, South Berwick. The Old Berwick Historical Society, which operates the Counting House Museum, promotes public awareness of and appreciation for local and regional history. Learn more at www.oldberwick.org.

ists. One of the most common comments by readers is just how relatable his characters and storylines are. If you’ve been to the seacoast before, you will love how he weaves many local references to York and its surrounding towns. The best part, however, is that even if you’ve never stepped foot in Maine, his stories are still relatable. Another comment he receives a lot from readers is that they love how he tells the story. One reader described his style as, “It feels as if you’re sitting across from him having a drink while he tells his story. It’s as if he’s talking directly to you.â€? When asked how much of the main character (Josh) is based on himself, his response was, “His personality and quirks are 100% me, but everything that happens to him is definitely a blend of fact and fiction.â€? Usually his goal is to have a new book in the trilogy out by Memorial Day weekend, but this year he needed it done weeks earlier. Partially this was due to the big launch party he had planned for May 4 at Ruby’s Wood Grill in York, but mostly he needed it done for a movie he was going to see on May 18 in Concord, N.H. The movie would be none other than “Say Anythingâ€?‌ the 30year anniversary showing of it‌ hosted by John Cusack himself. “When I saw he (John Cusack) was touring the country

showing the movie and doing a Q & A, I knew I needed to go, and I knew I needed to give him signed copies of my Soundtrack to My Life trilogy. I didn’t go into it with the hopes of him reading the books and miraculously wanting to star in them as movies. To be honest, he’s way too old for them now. I honestly just wanted to thank him for his original inspiration 30 years earlier, and I thought giving him those books in person would be the perfect symbolism of me coming full circle. Although he only had a brief moment, Jody did indeed thank him for his inspiration as he handed Mr. Cusack signed copies of his long-time passion project: The Soundtrack to My Life trilogy. Mission “Full Circle – accomplished. Does this mean he’s given up on the idea of turning his stories into movies? “Not necessarily, he said, “but sometimes the reality of the situation makes you alter your goals, that’s all. For now, I’m very happy turning my screenplays into novels, and I’m even happier with the overwhelming support and interest these books have garnered. Jody still finds it a bit shocking and amusing that his trilogy has been so popular. “I honestly thought, due to my brand of sophomoric, and at times, perverted humor, that my

audience would be somewhat limited. Surprisingly, this wasn’t the case at all. The books have been enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. When asked what he thinks is the major attraction to his York Beach trilogy, Jody answered, “Through all the silly humor, there are characters and life situations that everyone can relate to. At the end of the day, the main characters are simply searching for their ‘it’. ‘It’ could be their true love or just what they’re true passion in life is, ya know, what gets you up in the morning? And at the end of the day, I think we’re all searching for that. Jody is so appreciative of all the support he’s received from his readers that he’s included a handwritten thank you note in each and every copy of his newest book – “The Ring on the Sill. What started off as one or two businesses carrying his books, has now turned into over a dozen local stores, and you can always get personalized signed copies on his website, www.vacationlandbooks.com.

YORK The York Public Library invites the public to attend a special presentation of the documentary Day of Days — June 6, 1944: American Soldiers Remember D-Day at 7 p.m. at the library on Thursday, June 6. This hour-long documentary is comprised of vivid recollections and testimonies from the men who valiantly fought and survived the invasion of Normandy. Over the ensuing hours and days, the men faced decimating machine-gun fire, mortars and artillery, eventually fighting their way inland, but not before suffering a staggering number of casualties. This hour-long documentary commemorates the Normandy landing by bringing together American D-Day veterans to share their experiences from that fateful day. As they vividly recall details from their ordeal - from the perils of the amphibious assault to the invasion’s gruesome aftermath - their

Joint Land Use Study Public Survey KITTERY The Joint Land Use Study (JLUS) is a collaborative planning effort between the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Town of Kittery and the Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC: www. smpdc.org) to protect and preserve military readiness while supporting continued community growth and economic development. The study area includes Kittery and Portsmouth specifically, as well as the general region incorporating York, Strafford and Rockingham counties. The study involves looking at 24 potential compatibility factors, however feedback during the public engagement process

is largely emphasizing concerns and challenges related to local and regional transportation. Public feedback in this survey will help inform recommendations developed in the final JLUS report with an emphasis on local and regional transportation. These may include changes to policy, recommended funding sources for transportation projects and improvements, or recommended follow-on studies. The survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete and all responses are confidential. To take the public survey, visit www.surveymonkey.com/r/RKCV97M. In addition to the survey, the public is invited to an open

house to ask any questions about the Joint Land Use Study and, most importantly, to share ideas about opportunities and solutions for some of the concerns raised during the public engagement process so far.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 5 at the Kittery Community Center, 120 Rogers Road, Kittery, 4:30-7 p.m.

~ Arts & Entertainment ~ OPA Presents 25th Annual Chamber Music Festival OGUNQUIT Ogunquit Performing Arts (OPA) celebrates 25 years of Chamber Music with its 25th Annual Chamber Music Festival, Friday, June 7 and Friday, June 14 at 7:30 p.m. The first concert will take place at the Dunaway Center, 23 School Street, Ogunquit; the second concert will be at the Barn Gallery, Bourne Lane at Shore Road, Ogunquit. Free parking is available for ticketed concert-goers behind the Dunaway Center and at the Barn Gallery. Since its inception, the Chamber Music Festival has been the concluding event of OPA’s performance season, and has always been a very special occasion. Almost from the beginning, the first concert of the Festival has been devoted to the performance of a chamber group of Boston-based musicians called Boston Chamber Music, assem-

bled especially for this one concert by master clarinetist Thomas Hill. Hill retired as a performing musician last year, but OPA is now delighted to announce that Boston Chamber Music will continue to open the Festival every year. Renowned cellist Bruce Coppock has taken over direction of the group, and will continue to personally select musicians from the Boston area each year to provide a special concert absolutely unique to Ogunquit. On Friday, June 7, 7:30 p.m. at the Dunaway Center, Boston Chamber Music will play wonderful works by Beethoven, Debussy and Brahms. Coppock will be joined by violinist Matthew Vera and pianist Randall Hodgkinson. Thomas Hill, now a member of OPA’s Advisory Committee, will be in the audience, and a champagne reception will follow the performance.

The following Friday June 14, 7:30 p.m. in the beautiful setting of the Barn Gallery, Portland’s ChoralArt Camerata will appear for the first time in Ogunquit. One of the three ensembles comprising the highly acclaimed ChoralArt organization, the very selective Camerata is comprised of 14 singers and presents a wide range of a cappella repertoire from Renaissance to modern, including music of various other ethnicities. ChoralArt performs annually with the Portland Symphony Orchestra and in special

concerts with the Kotzschmar Organ in Merrill Auditorium. The Camerata will perform an entrancing program of Sacred and Secular Songs for Spring. The program will include beautiful sacred songs, spirituals, madrigals, love songs, and folk songs. A champagne reception will follow the performance. Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, $5 student, and may be purchased at the Barn Gallery, Dunaway Center, Ogunquit Camera Shop, Ogunquit Playhouse Downtown Box Office, Welcome Center, or at www.ogunquitperformingarts.org.

An illustration by Tony Falcone of the lobsters boats of Perkins Cove from the children’s book, Mermaid under the Bridge, by Brenda Yorke Goodale.

WELLS / OGUNQUIT All ages are invited to a book reading and talk on Saturday, June 1 at 10 a.m. with author Brenda Yorke Goodale, artist and illustrator Tony Falcone, and the star character of the book, Goodale’s grandson, young Jack. This event will celebrate the recent publication of Goodale’s newest children’s book, Mermaid under the Bridge. The much loved author lives near the subject of the book, as her home overlooks the bridge at Perkins Cove in Ogunquit. An interest in this special spot comes from her family history — grandfather George Yorke, was a fisherman in Perkin’s Cove. Family, friends, and characters of Ogunquit are depicted in her written into her books. Her grandson, Jack, is the main character of this as well as her first book, The Pride of Perkins Cove. It is Jack who sees the mermaid (being that only children can see mermaids), and brings this story off the pages! The illustrations have been beautifully produced by Tony Falcone, a self-taught artist, who established his Falcone Art Studio in 1974. His murals and paintings enhance public buildings throughout New England. Tony has used Wells history as

the subject of his work previously, in a mural of Lindsey Tavern depicted in the time period of the Marquis de Lafayette speech on its steps to the townspeople, during the 1825 tour of the US. This program will take place in The Meetinghouse Museum, located across from Hannaford Plaza in Wells. Light refreshments will be offered. For details, email info@wohistory. org or call 207-646-4775.

KHS Debuts Unified Spring Play

KENNEBUNK In lieu of Kennebunk High School’s traditional spring play offering, the Performing Arts Department is proud to present an afternoon of theater featuring an original student-written play created by their Unified Theater Troupe and a performance by Portland Playback Theatre Company. The theme for both performances is “Superheroes & Villains.” The concept of “unified theater” is similar to the Unified Basketball program, which is also offered at KHS. Students with and without disabilities come together to create and perform their own original play. The national Unified Theater program is managed by non-profit organization Kids Included Together (www.kit.org). The KHS unified play features original characters and a story-line cre-

ated by the participants as well as a student director, student playwrights, and students designing costumes and props. The project is co-produced by theater teacher, Marianne Pillsbury, and special education teacher, Meg Murray. Portland Playback Theatre Company (www.portlandplayback.com) is a professional improv group who use improvisation for a special purpose: to honor the stories of audience members. “Our performances create a venue for individuals to share significant events and experiences, and through the art of improvisation, witness their immediate enactment. In this way, the story ‘tellers’ come to recognize that they are not alone, that their stories matter, and that they are part of a larger community of empathic witnesses who recognize both the unique and the universal within us all.”

Marquis

The Portland Playback performance is funded by a grant from the Education Foundation of the Kennebunks and Arundel (EFKA: www.educationfoundationka.org). EFKA “works with the schools of RSU 21 to inspire and ignite young minds by funding creative and innovative programs for students and professional development for teachers and other staff.” An additional component of the EFKA grant involved a member of Portland Playback visiting Pillsbury’s Improvisation class, which includes members of the Unified Theater troupe, to teach some of the Playback improv forms. The students will showcase what they’ve learned at the All Arts Night at KHS on Thursday, May 30, 5-7 p.m. The Superheroes & Villains double bill will have one performance only on Sunday, June 2, starting at 2 p.m. at the Kennebunk High School Performing Arts Center (KPAC), 89 Fletcher St. Suggested donation is $10 for adults, $5 for students, seniors, and children under 18. Tickets can be purchased at the door only. For more information, email mpillsbury@rsu21.net.

OGUNQUIT The Ogunquit Heritage Museum at the Captain James Winn House, 86 Obeds Lane in Ogunquit, opens for its 19th season on Saturday, June 1. The museum will be open through Oct. 31, Tuesdays-Saturdays from 1 - 5 p.m. The Museum is excited to be doing an exhibit on Henry Strater as an artist, member of the Lost Generation, philanthropist, Ogunquit Museum of American Art founder and prized fisherman. OHM has been loaned Strater’s artwork from private collections featuring some really spectacular

paintings. With that the Museum segues into showcasing tuna fishing and Perkins Cove. Henry was an integral part in getting the Cove dredged in 1941 so larger boats and their catches could come into harbor. And the fishermen have never looked back. Last, but not least, is a presentation of the Ogunquit Square Theatre. Starting with it being the original Ogunquit Playhouse run by the Hartwigs in 1933 and ending as the Ogunquit Square Movie Theatre owned by the Cooksons’. In the small borning room

a permanent collection gives prominence to a pair of Ogunquit’s famous teahouses-The Dan Sing Fan and The Whistling Oyster. Showcased are signs, furniture, menus, photographs and paintings from the original buildings. The ell houses the Perkins Cove collection, including a fish shack replica and the artifacts typically found in the fishermen’s shacks of old. There are also paintings and photographs, past and present, that have been created around Ogunquit. Admission is free but donations are gratefully accepted.

The Museum also houses the extensive Charles Littlefield Seaman Library, information on Maine families and towns through the years and a reproduction of the famous Ogunquit dory. For more information, call 207-646-0296.

YORK COUNTY In early May, Sarah Goodwin graduated from the Layman Way Recovery Center in Alfred. This unique residential drug and alcohol treatment program has given Goodwin, 39, a chance to live a better life. Goodwin, who has had a lifelong struggle with drugs, especially opiates, was arrested and jailed last summer for aggravated use of a methamphetamine lab. She flourished at the recovery center, which offers a six-month intensive program. Now she has been reunited with her two sons, and the family has moved into York County Shelter Programs’ housing. Goodwin says the support and caring she received at Layman Way are what changed her life. “This place loved me until I could love myself,” she says.

Travis Greenwood, 31, another recent graduate, also says the caring he felt at Layman Way was the reason he could go through the program successfully. “I have never felt such support,” Greenwood says. Layman Way Recovery Center opened last May. It was created for people who have been jailed for charges directly related to drug or alcohol use. Untreated, it is likely the substance abuser would continue to use alcohol or drugs once released from jail – and perhaps end up in jail again. In an effort to break this cycle, York County Shelter Programs partnered with the county’s district attorney’s office and county government to create the recovery center. Layman Way is unique in Maine – and perhaps in the country – as it is supported by local taxpayers through county government. Its founders had initially sought state and/or federal funding, but discovered that no monies were available for the recovery center they envisioned. Individuals who are jailed for alcohol or drug use and are considered non-violent, and who also may be incarcerated because they lack financial resources to make bail, are screened for referral. With approval by the dis-

trict attorney and a judge, an individual moves to the center, which can house up to 12 men and 12 women. Residents receive intensive support, which includes group and individual counseling, 12-step support, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Young People in Recovery, medication assistance treatment (MAT) (medication for people withdrawing from opiates,) family support groups, mentor programs, and case workers who help residents plan for life following graduation. A local adult education program offers classes there, and wellness activities are offered. The Center also provides after-care, with counseling and support available for those who have successfully completed the program. Fifty six people were admitted to the program over the past year. Seventeen successfully completed the six-month program. Those numbers speak to the difficulties inherent to breaking substance addictions. The numbers make the program a success. York County manager Greg Zinser says, “The commissioners and See RECOVER page 15...

Health & Fitness ...RECOVER from page 14 I are very pleased with the success of Layman Way Recovery Center, and we are grateful for the ongoing support of the budget committee. Layman Way is a testament to a solid partnership with the office of the district attorney and York County Shelter Programs as we all seek to combat the opioid crisis.” York County Shelter Programs CEO Bob Dawber is also pleased with the center’s first year. “On the first anniversary of Layman Way Recovery Center, we are celebrating those whose lives have been renewed as a result of their work in recovery,” Dawber says. “Working in partnership with the county gives us more resources as we address substance abuse – especially Maine’s ongoing opiod crisis. We had many success stories this year. Credit also goes to our compassionate staff, who offer hope to all who enter the program.” Both Goodwin and Greenwood had been battling addictions for years. Goodwin, a graduate of Bonny Eagle High School, had been using drugs since she was 16. After she became a mother, she was clean for 12 years. A few years ago she began to use methamphetamines. Charges are still pending; she will be placed on probation. Goodwin says of that time when she was arrested, “I was so broken. So tired. So hopeless. I felt like giving up.” She regained some hope when she heard of the Layman Way program and was accepted into it. Greenwood, a Windham native, had also given up. He says that when he was arrested for trafficking fentanyl last year he was relieved. He was

so addicted to the drug that it no longer gave him a high; he shot up just to stop the sweating and sickness he felt when he woke up every morning. He was working seven days a week as a sub-contractor in order to make money to buy fentanyl. He says he was in a cycle that was leaving him suicidal. Greenwood had been using drugs since he was 14. He has been to treatment several times. Layman Way was different, he says, because of the intensive support given residents. “Support, love, dedication…that’s what makes this place stand out,” he says. “They cared about me when I couldn’t care about myself.” Greenwood has found sub-contracting work with a contractor who is also in recovery. He has reconnected with his 11-year-old son. He has recon-

nected with numerous family members who had given up on him. Greenwood is still facing federal charges that may carry a sentence of five to 10 years. “But you know, no matter what, I can do it sober,” Greenwood says. “I am not scared of tomorrow. I embrace it.” York County District Attorney Kathyrn Slattery feels the center is making great strides towards change. “A year ago York County embarked on its mission of hope for individuals who battle addiction and are enmeshed in the criminal justice system,” Slattery says. “Layman Way has created a path for its residents to move out of the criminal justice system and into society. Steps toward recovery are steps toward a safer community for all of us. I continue to be grateful for the county’s support of its residents through Layman Way.”

9% Funding Increase Secured for Veterans WASHINGTON, D.C Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) announced that the House Appropriations Committee has approved a $10 billion funding increase for veterans programs and military construction projects—including assistance for homeless veterans and veterans mental health, and support for survivors of military sexual assault, among other key items. As a member of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations subcommittee, Pingree voted to approve the

9% funding increase over FY 2019 and support these vital programs. “This bill honors our nation’s commitment to those who serve by prioritizing funding in their physical and mental health,” said Pingree. “I’m proud this bill includes funding for Maine’s veterans and protects our shipyard, and I’m particularly happy to see support for survivors of military sexual assault, which has long been a key priority of mine.” Highlights from the appropriation bill include: $107.6 billion in FY20 and

Nearly $1.4M for Head Start in York County WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced that York County Community Action Corporation received $1,389,483 for its Head Start program. “Head Start provides children with a strong educational foundation that allows them to grow and succeed,” Senators Collins and King said in a joint statement. “This important funding will help build an educational foundation for children in York County and provide parents with

access to the services they need during their children’s formative years.” York County Community Action Corporation seeks to alleviate poverty for the people of York County by assisting families and seniors within the community. The organization helps to administer economic stability services such as Head Start, Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), and Women with Infants and Children (WIC). Head Start was established in 1965 to promote school readiness and provide a comprehensive array of health, nutritional, and social services to eligible four- and five-yearold preschoolers and their families. Head Start services include early learning, health, and family well-being. This funding, which was awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, funds local agencies that provide Head Start services across the country.

Weekly Recipe: Fresh Asparagus Soup I love Asparagus in all forms: raw, steamed, boiled, broiled, baked, cooked on the grill, but my favorite is as a soup. Asparagus soup is definitely something you should try. I think you will love the apple pieces added to this recipe. ~ Paul Parent

Half cup of heavy or whipping cream 2 scallions

Directions: 1] Snap off the tough ends of the asparagus to also remove any yellow portions of the tips. Cut into 1.5 inch piece, place in a pot and barely cover with water. Add a pinch of salt and Sugar, bring to a boil slightly covered for 10 minutes. Strain the asparagus and save the water. 2} Puree your cooked asparagus with a cup of the cooking water in your food processor or blender until smooth and

set aside in large bowl. 3} Add 4 cups of vegetable broth in a medium pot and then 2.5 cups of additional saved water used for cooking the asparagus and mix well. 4} Add the pureed asparagus mixture and a half cup of cream to the broth mixture and season with salt pepper and a pinch of nutmeg. 5} Peal your Granny Smith apples cut in half and coir out the seeds. Chop up the apple into 1-inch cubes and add the apples to the soup mixture. If you want to make this fancy use a melon scooper instead of cutting cubes of apples. 6} Whip the soup mixture together and warm up over a low fire until ready to serve. 7} Garnish each portion with a dollop of your whip cream. Cut one of your scallions into small rings and the other split it in half the long way and again in half giving you 4 pieces to set in the bowl of soup with the rings of scallions. 8} Optional: I like to toast a couple prices of pita bread, butter well, slice into 2-inches slices and serve with the soup. Enjoy!

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I have reason to believe that someone installed a keylogger on my laptop. I was told by a computer repairman that malware bytes detects those and deletes them but I cannot see where they would find that info. how can I remove a keylogger off of my laptop? Your faithful follower, Julie Dear Julie, There are two types of keyloggers that can be put on a computer. One is a hardware device that usually plugs into the same port as your keyboard and gets information directly from the keyboard connection to the computer. This type of keylogger can be easily found and removed by inspecting all the connections on your computer. The other is a software program that records all your keystrokes and saves them in a log file that can be sent to another computer. Many keylogger programs can also monitor all emails, and instant messages on your computer. Not all keylogger programs are malware. When my children were young, I had this type of program on their computer. It was easier for them to stay away from bad sites when they knew Mom was getting a daily report of their online activity. Employers might also use keylogger software to make sure employees are not using business computers for personal corrospondence. Unfortunately, keylogger software can be included in spyware programs, which would allow thieves to access your data. How do you get

rid of a software keylogger? Most antivirus companies already include protection against known keyloggers, so if you keep your antivirus program updated, you will be protected against most threats. The only 100% sure way to remove a keylogger is to securely erase the hard drive and do a clean install of Windows, something your local computer repair shop would be able to do for you. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have an iPad Air 2 and a computer desktop with AOL for my e-mail. I have turned off all sound for my settings on my iPad. For my e- mail on AOL, I have also turned off the setting for receiving e-mail. However, every e-mail that I receive, my iPad still “dings. My iPad shows me that all the sound is turned off! What can I do to stop the sound? Thank you so much for all your help all these years! Kathy Dear Kathy, While I can’t tell exactly what is going on without looking at the settings on your iPad, I can give you a couple of things to try. First, try putting your iPad on mute. You should be able to do that with the small slider button on the long edge of your iPad just above the volume up and down buttons. I find that by keeping my iPad on mute, only things that really need sound like movies and some games will override the mute setting. Another thing to try is to turn on the “Do Not Disturb setting on your iPad. To turn on “Do Not Disturb you

can either hold down the home button on your iPad until it beeps and then say, “Do Not Disturb. Your iPad will tell you that it has turned on “Do Not Disturb. You can also access the “Do Not Disturb setting in the settings on your iPad. Find the “Settings icon and find “Do Not Disturb in the second section from the top. You can either schedule a time of day for it to be turned on (mine is on from 10pm to 5am) or you can tap the button next to “Manual to turn it on at other times of the day. I hope this helps you keep your iPad from making unwanted sounds. Elizabeth

probably never use again (by the time you replace your new computer, the transfer cable will probably be outdated) but you will be able to use the data stick or hard drive to save files and backup your computer. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, Can you, please, tell me which Transfer Cable to buy? I went to Belkins web site, but it seems that they sell many different kinds! I want to transfer all my ‘stuff’ from Windows 7 (I really don’t have much) to my Win 10 machine. Also, could you please include a link at your website that will show me How To Transfer From One PC To Another. Thanks for any help, Madison

~ Church News ~

St Peter’s By The Sea Episcopal Church to Open for Season CAPE NEDDICK St Peter’s By The Sea Episcopal, located at 535 Shore Road in Cape Neddick, will open for its summer season on June 9, as the day of Pentecost will be celebrated in music and praise with the Rev. W. Patrick Gahan. Fr. Pat is widely acclaimed as a dynamic preacher of the word of God. The Sunday services will be at 8 a.m. with homily and holy communion, and 10 a.m. with sermon, music, and holy Eucharist. The new music director and organist is Harold Stover. A fellowship hour with food and drinks follows the 10 a.m. service in the

historic rectory, the Marmion House, alongside the church and ocean. The church will remain open until Sunday, October 13, when it closes for the season). Everyone is welcome. St Peter’s By The Sea was built in 1897 from a bequest by Nannie Dunlap Conorroe, widow of George. Sited on Christian Hill so that its cross would be visible to sailors at sea, the parish became well known to sailors and historians. The church was designed by George C. Burns and built by Edward Blaisdell of York. Conorroe was also responsible for the library in Ogunquit which is designed similar to the parish of St. Peter’s!

The beautiful stone church has many stained glass windows, high altar of stone, dark woodwork, large beamed ceiling, wooden kneelers, a majestic organ, and a strong music program under the auspices of Harold Stover. The stained glass windows are well known in the northeast and in the US for their historic significance and beauty. Some of the windows were designed by the Connick Brothers of Boston, MA. Summer events are held often at the church and on the grounds alongside the rectory (the priest’s residence) and ocean. The widely acclaimed jazz concert with its wine and

cheese reception following provides funding for the on-going restoration efforts at St. Peter’s By The Sea and to the preservation fund. The church has become a popular destination for those who want a Christian/ Episcopal wedding. Baptisms as a holy sacrament of the Anglican church are also popular each summer as more children and adults are being baptized. The memorial gardens, the only one of its kind in Maine, provides a burial place in a sacred setting next to the church. Many visitors walk through the beautiful gardens and sit on the benches to find peace or pray. For more information, visit www.st-peters-by-the-sea.org or call 207-361-2030.

~ Pets ~ Animal Welfare Society KENNEBUNK Meet Mocha and Deja. Mocha the cat is happy being a background character - no leading role for her. She’s quiet and reserved and would like a home where she can be comfortable but that doesn’t require her to take center stage. Her new people will have to be very patient as she slowly comes out of her shell. She would prefer to be the only pet in a new home. Mocha is currently in foster care, but her foster mom is traveling for a month starting

June 5 so we’d really like Mocha to find her new home before then. She takes a very long time to be comfortable with her new people, so please help us find her retirement home now so we don’t have to transition her back to AWS, where she will be very unhappy with the hustle and bustle of the Adoption Center. If you have room in your heart and home for this shy senior (15 years old) to spend her golden years, please contact us today. Also, Mocha is a DDAF Senior and through generous funding from the Doris Day Animal Foundation (DDAF), we are able to offer Mocha’s adopters up to $100 in post-adoption support for qualified non-routine veterinary care, such as dental care, surgery, diagnostics, and certain prescrip-

tion medications. Deja the dog is two years old and a beautiful leading lady, ready to be the star of her own production. She would also like to be the only pet in her new home, and she would like any human co-stars to be older children or grown ups. She doesn’t quite know what to make of the toddlers and other small children who are about her size. But for bigger people, she’s just a big ol’ lap baby. She forgets she’s 50

Safe Haven Humane Society WELLS First, thank you to everyone who made last weekend’s Yard Sale such a big success. Special thanks to our Safe Haven volunteers, who literally had to hang on to our canopies during strong wind gusts. In fact, one canopy was swept away by the wind and smashed! We are really grateful to the young men from the nearby construction site who not only ran to our rescue, but brought buckets of heavy gravel and ropes to better secure our canopies.

Second, Willow (photo) lived in midcoast Maine until her owner died. She was then surrendered to a holding facility and eventually to Safe Haven, where she has started her life anew. This beautiful young short-haired kitty has fur like velvet, black and white and oh so soft. We’re not sure what her past diet was, but we suspect she ate a lot of people food instead of a proper feline diet. Willow is very sweet, friendly, lovable and likes to play. She’s enjoying summer camp at Saint David’s Budget

Box thrift shop in Kennebunk, which is a Safe Haven satellite location. Because she must be on a special diet, her meals can be monitored, so it would be easiest is she is an “only pet. Come meet Willow at the Budget Box, 2 Bragdon Lane in Kennebunk, next to Anchor Fence. You’ll quickly see just what

lbs when she jumps up to snuggle in your lap on the couch. She’s loyal and affectionate and smart. She already knows “sit,â€? “shake,â€? and “down.â€? She has lots of love to give and can’t wait to be the star of her new family, perhaps during an epic production of Tug o’ War, her very favorite game. Deja is also in foster care, so if you’d like to add Mocha or Deja to your family, contact us at 207-985-3244. Thank you! a sweet and special girl she is. Third, our adoption center is at full occupancy, and we’re so happy our snow bird volunteers are back and lending their helping hands. But additional help is still urgently needed evenings for feeding, scooping and comfort care. If you love cats and can spare a couple of hours once a week around 4 or 5 p.m., we’d love to have you join our cat care team! FMI: 207-646-1611. Lastly, our thrift shop, 1517 Post Road, Wells, is a great place to hunt for treasures. It’s overflowing with bargains that will tickle anyone’s fancy. ~ Church News ~ Award-Winning Pastor, Author and Educator Now in Cape Neddick CAPE NEDDICK Donna F.G. Hailson is now serving as pastor of the Cape Neddick Baptist Church. The awardwinning minister, author, educator, photographer, and radio host is delighted to be back home in New England, following eight years of adventuring around the United States. “It wasn’t all that difficult an adjustment to get back into the habit of preaching, teaching and caring for a flock, she said, “As I had formerly led churches in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania. Hailson was educated at the University of Massachusetts with majors in political science and

English. She earned her Master of Divinity degree at GordonConwell Theological Seminary followed by doctoral studies at the London School of Theology in England. She then served as a Visiting Professor at two of GordonConwell Theological Seminary’s campuses in Massachusetts and at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. She was subsequently named to a professorship and tapped to serve as Director of the Doctor of Ministry in the Renewal of the Church for Mission, also at Eastern (now Palmer). As a speaker and retreat leader, she has addressed audiences throughout the United

States and in Europe. Her work has centered on the development of Christians in the spiritual disciplines of the faith; the renewal of persons, congregations, and communities; and engagement with world religions and new religious movements. As a member of the Missions Committee and Worship and Spirituality Commission of the Baptist World Alliance, she learned about the challenges of ministry from leaders in nations on every continent. Her travels have taken her to many points on the globe — from the Philippines to Zimbabwe to Spain. As the Hailsons were setting off on their road adventures,

Donna was invited to become the Internet radio host of On the Road with Mac and Molly. With no specific itinerary and an everchanging format, she reported on the joys and challenges of sharing the open road with Gene and their two Old English Sheepdogs, Mac and Molly. Two of her book projects about the natural world were completed and published in 2016. Big Cypress Swamp: The Western Everglades, 2nd edition (which she edited), and Celebrating America’s National Parks (which she authored) were collaborations with renowned large format landscape photographer, Clyde Butcher (his images, her words). The latter

volume placed first in the category of “Professional Book — Nature in the 2017 International Photography Awards Competition. She is currently at work on The Rockery, her sixth book project (as editor and/or author). The volume is centered on theology, nature and the arts as spiritual ambassadors for the Christian faith. She blogs at www.donnafghailson.com.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

As president and general manager, he guided the company to become New England’s largest school furniture distributor. Upon retirement, he turned the company over to the employees, and moved to Twin Mountain, NH, where he and his wife built a log home, located at the base of the Sugarloaf Mountains, and lived there happily for 30 years. Sheila Urbanetti, 91 WELLS – Sheila Urbanetti used to say that the three most important things she’d done in her life were: 1) have her two children 2) separate from her

husband 3) have her knees replaced. And in that order. That’s just how she was – all five foot, two of her: straightforward and loving and strong with a hint of glee. With her jetblack hair and blue eyes, she had a spark. Sheila loved her family and friends, her Irish heritage, a clean, well-decorated house, chocolate, and Miller Lite. Sheila died on May 19, 2019 after suffering from dementia for twelve years. Sheila Margaret Reilly was born September 19, 1927 in Hartford, CT, to Agnes (Bender) Reilly and Owen Reilly. Her mother died when she was four. Sheila was raised by her father and her strict grandmother in Manchester, CT. Her “Grammie went blind when Sheila was eight. It was not an easy childhood, but it shaped who she would become, a woman who had a hard side and a soft side and showed them equally. She married Marino Urbanetti when she was nineteen and had two children, Steven and Ellen. Though she loved Marino, she knew she needed to separate from him to provide a better life for her children. She was ahead of her time, leaving when many women would have stayed. She valued people for their character, not the color of their skin. She raised her children to know they were no better than anyone, and no one was any better than them. Sheila made the best of adversity. Raising two children alone in Hartford was challenging, but she made do and always managed to have fresh flowers every Friday. Sheila worked several jobs at various points and eventually became an interviewer for the State of Connecticut Employment Services. Sheila retired from the state at sixty-four and motivated

her friends to get up and go out. She hosted luncheons where she and her friends played cards for nickels. They saved up the winnings and all would go out for a treat. Sheila relocated to Maine in 2007 and lived with Ellen and son-in-law, Roger. She has lived at a memory care facility, Avita of Wells, since January 2017. She is survived by her son Steven (Kim) Urbanetti of Las Vegas, NV.; daughter Ellen Salvatore-Voisine and Roger Voisine from North Berwick; a granddaughter Connie (Judd) Mazur of Tempe, AZ; grandson Michael (Jose Antonio) Salvatore of NY; step-granddaughter Kim (Stefan) Voisine of Manchester, CT; step-grandson Kevin (Candice) Voisine of DeBary, FL; three great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; two great-great grandsons; and a brother-in-law Joseph (Yolanda) Urbanetti. She was preceded in death by her parents Agnes and Owen Reilly; husband Marino Urbanetti; sisters Dorothy McNair and Evelyn Walters; two sistersin-laws Palmira Marinelli and Mary Sharples; and brother-inlaw Peter Urbanetti. Sheila’s family would like to send their deepest thanks and love to a dear friend through all of the seasons, Lafern O’Connor of Manchester, CT. They would also like to thank the staff at Avita of Wells and Beacon Hospice for appreciating and loving Sheila’s spirit. Please join them in celebrating Sheila’s life Saturday, June 1, 1:30-2 p.m. at the South United Methodist Church, 1226 Main St, Manchester. CT. A luncheon will follow at the Manchester Country Club. Per Sheila’s request, please wear bright colors. And please visit Sheila’s page at www.weremember.com/ sheila-urbanetti/0l1l/memories.

Governor Mills Signs Bill to Prohibit Native American Mascots in Maine AUGUSTA Flanked by Maine tribal leaders and ambassadors, lawmakers, and education officials, Governor Janet Mills signed into law a bill passed unanimously by the Legislature to prohibit Native American mascots in all Maine public schools. “While Indian mascots were often originally chosen to recognize and honor a school’s unique connection to Native American communities in

Maine, we have heard clearly and unequivocally from Maine tribes that they are a source of pain and anguish,” said Governor Mills. “A mascot is a symbol of pride, but it is not the source of pride. Our people, communities, and understanding and respect for one another are Maine’s source of pride and it is time our symbols reflect that.” “I am deeply proud of the steps our Legislature has taken this session to finally honor

Maine’s tribes in the way they should be honored. Our tribal communities laid the foundation of our state. They are people, not mascots. I am grateful Gov. Mills continues to support laws that recognize the rightful place of indigenous people in our state,” said Representative Benjamin Collings, D-Portland. California, Oregon and Wisconsin have enacted similar bans or restrictions on the use of Native American Mascots and

Rodeo Presented by Students and Staff at WES WELLS On April 27, Wells Elementary School’s second-grade, and multi-1/2 classes presented the school’s annual Rodeo, the culmination of a multidisciplinary unit that combines the core classes of music, physical education, art, library, and technology in studying the settlement of the American West via the famed Oregon Trail. Early in the afternoon, 125 students, dressed as western pioneers strutted into the school’s gymnasium and formed a large rectangle around the gym floor. They were greeted by an estimated 275 parents, siblings, relatives, teachers, and staff who made up the audience. The program started with a few students reading aloud snippets of information about the arduous journey on the Oregon Trail, the 2,000-mile route over which thousands of pioneers mi-

Michigan, New York and South Dakota are among states nationwide that have enacted resolutions calling on the end of their use. Upon Governor Mills’ signature, the law will take effect 90 days after the adjournment of the Legislature.
