Make Way for the Berwick Car Show

BERWICK -

Get ready to rumble on Sunday, June 2 as Berwick’s 11th annual car show gets underway. On that day, 11 Sullivan Square is the place to be for car enthusiasts and visitors alike. Hosted by Charles S. Hatch Post #79 to benefit local veterans and their families, this popular family-oriented event features several hundred cars, trucks, motorcycles, and customs. Registration starts at 8 a.m. sharp, and the event runs until 2 p.m.

Even though much has changed since 1934, when 15 gallons of gas set one back a whole $1.95, one thing has remained constant: the sheer joy, pride, and accomplishment that comes with restoring and owning one’s

own vintage vehicle.

This year, the spotlight falls on one featured auto, a beautifully restored 1934 Plymouth P.E. that has already won two “Best In Show” honors in 2024! This beauty took the original owner 17 years and 905 manhours to build. Lifelong mechanic and proud new owner Dave Horne of Somersworth, NH will be on hand to show off the Plymouth’s unique features, from the “suicide doors” that open backwards to the odometer (a mere 600 miles) to the striking color (“BMW blue”) that simply takes one’s breath away! Be sure to ask Dave about the mirrors

under his Plymouth.

The town square will be alive with music throughout the day, courtesy of D.J. John Cox. The grills will be hot and ready to serve burgers and hot dogs along with baked beans, breakfast sandwiches and desserts. Plus, there will be beverages, souvenir Tshirts and sweatshirts galore for sale, courtesy of Seacoast Printing & Awards in South Berwick.

Bring the kids, phones, and appetites, and get ready to rumble in Berwick on Sunday, June 2, a good time, guaranteed!

Rain date is June 9. For more information, visit www. berwickmelegionpost79.org.

Historic New England Houses Free on Saturday

SOUTH BERWICK & YORK -

On Saturday, June 1, all thirty-eight Historic New England historic properties will be open and free to the public.

Between South Berwick and York, visitors can choose from three historic sites with distinct architecture, lovely landscapes, and wonderful stories: Hamilton House, the Sarah Orne Jewett house, and the Sayward-Wheeler House.

In a picturesque setting overlooking the Salmon Falls River, Hamilton House is a striking Georgian mansion, and a National Landmark, c. 1785. Its landscape shares a history that mirrors much of Southern Maine, as the house is located on

former land once belonging to the Wabanaki. After European colonists took ownership of the area known as South Berwick, the site was purchased in the eighteenth century by merchant Jonathan Hamilton for his shipping business, farmed by the Goodwin family in the nineteenth century, and restored as the summer retreat of Emily Tyson and her stepdaughter, Elise, at the turn of the twentieth.

Today, Hamilton House reflects the occupancy of the Tysons in the early twentieth century. It is one of the region’s quintessential country estates of that era. The house features two whimsical murals commissioned by the women as well as antique

furnishings and handcrafted decorative arts they collected. The elaborate perennial garden, with its charming garden cottage, provides visitors with a place to stroll and picnic overlooking the river.

Iconic Maine author Sarah Orne Jewett was born in her grandparents’ eighteenth-century house in 1849. She lived there with her family until she was five years old, when the family built a Greek Revival house next door. As Sarah gained attention as a writer, she and her family lived in the two Portland Street homes in the center of town, but it was her grandparent’s house that Jewett so loved, she used it as the setting for her first novel,

“Deephaven” (1877). Jewett and her older sister, Mary, inherited their grandparents’ house in 1887, when Jewett was thirty-eight. By this time, Jewett was a successful author and living part of the year in Boston with her partner, Annie Fields. Still, Jewett returned for several months each year to the South Berwick home she loved.

Today, Sarah’s beloved home is now a National Historic Landmark. Sarah Orne Jewett House reflects not only the Jewett sisters’ eclectic tastes and their desire to preserve their family’s tradition, but the house also reflects the life, work, and

ASNNE June Astronomy Club Meeting, Presentation

KENNEBUNK -

The Astronomical Society of Northern New England’s (ASNNE) next meeting will be on Friday, June 7, 7:30 p.m. at The New School, 38 York Street, Kennebunk. The business meeting, also open to the public, commences at 7 p.m.

At the June meeting, ASNNE is proud and honored to host a presentation by Dr. Fabian Kislat. Dr. Kislat is an experimental astrophysicist who develops new instruments that examine the polarization of Xand gamma rays. He will discuss how stellar-mass black holes and neutron stars offer astronomers unique opportunities to test fundamental understandings of the Universe in extreme environments.

Compact systems like black holes and neutron stars cannot be directly seen with telescopes like

Chandra or JWST. Instead, stargazers and astrophysicists study X-ray polarization to learn about their surroundings. X-ray polarimetry has made a comeback since NASA launched IXPE in 2021. The University of New Hampshire is involved in IXPE through XL-Calibur. XL-Calibur flew on a balloon from Sweden to Canada in 2022 and will fly again in 2024. Dr. Kislat will talk about both missions and the insights X-ray polarimetry offers.

ment of Physics and Astronomy and a member of the Space Science Center at the University of New Hampshire (UNH). He has more than 12 years of experience in X-ray polarimetry and the development of instrumentation for high-energy astrophysics. He joined UNH in 2018 after spending six years at Washington University in St. Louis, first as postdoctoral researcher and since 2015 as Research Assistant Professor. He received his Ph.D. from Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, in 2011.

The June meeting agenda will also, as always, include Bernie Reim’s “What’s Up for the Month” and the ever-popular “Astro Shorts,” where attendees and members share questions, activities, news and observations. Astro Shorts always give way to lively and informative discussions.

ASNNE is a local association of amateur astronomers that meets monthly at the New School in Kennebunk. Meetings are on the first Friday of each month; anyone interested in astronomy is welcome. ASNNE also hosts monthly Star Parties at its own Talmage Observatory at Starfield, on Route 35 in West Kennebunk. For more information, visit www. asnne.org.

YORK COUNTYYork County Community College’s (YCCC) 2024 graduates recently celebrated a year of “firsts,” beginning with an inspiring send-off on graduation night from Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro. The 29th YCCC commencement ceremony was held at the Sanford Center for Performing Arts, with more than 300 degrees and certificates awarded to 236 graduates.

“Don’t let anybody tell you you can’t do something.” Del Toro told the graduates. “I congratulate each and every one of you, but today is not the end of your journey. Indeed, it is the beginning.”

Del Toro told the graduates about his family’s journey, fleeing Castro’s Cuba and growing up poor in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen, and how it influenced his decision to join the military: “This nation took my family in when we had nowhere else to go,” he said.

Del Toro highlighted the college’s role in preparing students for the workforce, noting the graduates trained for nearby jobs at major defense sector companies, such as the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Bath Iron Works, and Pratt & Whitney.

“Our nation’s vast network of community colleges is vital to providing educational opportunities to Americans from all walks of life, meeting them in the communities where they work and reside to deliver worldclass instruction across dozens of concentrations that allow them to realize their career goals,” Del Toro said, adding, “Service to our nation is more than just a job, it is an honorable and noble profession – one where you are part of something greater than yourself, contributing to the advancement of our nation, and indeed the world.”

St Peter’s By The Sea Begins Services Sunday, June 2

CAPE NEDDICK -

St. Peter’s by the Sea Episcopal, located at 535 Shore Road in Cape Neddick, opens its doors for the summer season on Sunday, June 2 with two Sunday services - 8 a.m. with Holy Communion and homily and 10 a.m. with Eucharist, sermon, and music, including 11 professional choristers. The Rev. Dr. Patrick Gahan is both celebrant and preacher during the month of June. Organist and Music Director is Harold Stover. A fellowship hour in the rectory is held after the 10 a.m. service every Sunday

with social, food and drinks of all kinds. All are invited.

St. Peters by the Sea was built in 1897 from a bequest by Nannie Dunlap Conorroe, widow of George Conorroe. Sited on Christian Hill so that its cross could be visible to sailors at sea, the parish quickly became well known to sailors and historians. This year marks the 127th year St. Peter’s Episcopal has served the coast of York county and its residents and guests.

Ms. Conorroe was also responsible for the library in Ogunquit, which is designed in a style similar to St Peter’s. Its stained glass windows throughout are well recognized for both their beauty and historical significance. A few of the windows were designed locally by the Connick brothers of Boston.

The stone church boasts

stained glass windows, a towering stone and wood altar adorned with a reredos and historic candles, a lofty beamed ceiling, intricately stitched wooden pew kneelers, and a majestic organ. Bells ring out each Sunday, calling everyone to experience what some visitors have described in social media as “awesome liturgical worship.”

welding, marine design, and advanced manufacturing have led to closer ties to the Navy. In March, as part of the new Maine Defense Industry Alliance, YCCC received $5 million in Navy funding to expand manufacturing and trade programs at the college.

The commencement address was delivered by Geoff and Mike Howe, founders of Mainebased robotics company Howe & Howe Technologies. The brothers shared their philosophy with the graduates: “Success through adversity… taking control of your destiny. When hard times hit, when obstacles get in your way… pause, think, execute. Welcome the setback and accept the challenge!”

It was an evening of “firsts.” In recent years, YCCC has significantly expanded its academic programs, short-term training, and added sports teams and student housing. This year’s graduating class included the college’s first group of students earning associate degrees in nursing, the first group of students earning Alcohol and Drug Counselor certificates, the first members of YCCC’s baseball team, and two national champions from the YCCC track team.

U.S. Senator Susan Collins also attended the ceremony, and had the honor of introducing Del Toro prior to his commencement address. “It was an honor to join in this great day for York County Community College and congratulate all of the impressive graduates and their families,” she said.

The church was designed by George C. Burns and built by Edward Blaisdell of York.

YCCC President Michael Fisher closed the celebration by thanking the graduates for choosing YCCC and trusting the college with their growth, and for enriching the lives of others with their presence, ideas, and aspirations.

Safe Haven Humane Society

WELLS -

In 2017, Safe Haven rescued a beautiful, longhaired black cat from a holding facility. She was not on their list of cats the shelter had planned on bringing back that day, but when the shelter’s volunteers saw her, they knew this beautiful girl could not stay there one more minute.

A stray originally from midcoast Maine, Spirit ended up in a stainless steel cage for over a year at the facility. Her cage was on the bottom row in the darkest section of the room. Amid the din of barking dogs and crying cats, Spirit’s only view was of people’s legs as they walked by, and of the tufts of hair that fell in front of her cage as caretakers bathed and groomed dogs in the middle of the noisy, musty room.

At Safe Haven, vets discovered that Spirit had ringworm and dermatitis around the top of her eyes, which thinned her eyebrow hair. Her condition required months of isolation in Safe Haven’s sunny quarantine room, where she was introduced to toys, soft beds, good food, and fresh water.

Once physically recovered, Spirit then needed to heal emotionally. She was wary and frightened, always on guard,

fearing the worst. The volunteers understood.

The shelter’s receptionist took Spirit home, and for four years she experienced real love and kindness. Spirit slept at the foot of the bed every night, and let her new guardian brush her. Her mom described her lovingly and proudly as the best cat she ever had. Unfortunately, a sudden housing issue ended their loving relationship and sadly, Spirit had to be returned to the shelter.

later, Spirit appears depr essed and lonely. Despite being in a room with other cats, she keeps to herself, a lonely island perched on a cat tree, avoiding interaction. Spirit becomes fearful and guarded if friendship is offered. Safe Haven volunteers know Spirit still has the light inside her, but it needs to be relit by a good caretaker with a quiet and loving home.

Spirit, now age 11, was recently diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease. Cats with this condition can live anywhere from six months to six years. What Spirit needs is a happy home where she can boost her immune system and become a part of a new family. She currently needs no medications, and is healthy despite the diagnosis.

PSNY Partners with Noble

KITTERY -

On May 16, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) entered into an Educational Partnership Agreement (EPA) with Maine School Administrative District 60, also known as the NOBLE School System (NOBLE) covering the towns of North Berwick, Berwick, and Lebanon. This collaborative agreement presents opportunities for shipyard employees and NOBLE faculty to promote and encourage students’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses of study.

“This dynamic agreement presents a wide variety of opportunities that will enhance the potential growth in STEM and trades employment and help continue to build our relationship with the NOBLE community,” said Shipyard Commander,

Capt. Michael Oberdorf. “This is an exciting opportunity to partner with the NOBLE school system. NOBLE’s commitment to engaging with community partners to broaden pathways for each student coupled with exposure to STEM-related fields at the shipyard will be at the foundation of this effort.”

The EPA allows the Shipyard to increase its level of engagement with NOBLE students by sharing real-world, practical applications within STEM fields and by making PNSY technology assets and experts available to NOBLE schools. Through this agreement, students will be able to explore areas of interest in a hands-on environment with unique facilities and cuttingedge technologies. In return, this helps develop future scientists, engineers, trades professionals,

Maine Launches

STATEWIDE -

The Maine Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) recently launched the Maine Clean Energy Jobs Network, a new online directory that connects jobseekers to Maine-based clean energy employers and training opportunities.

The Network was developed and launched by GEO in coordination with the Maine Departments of Labor and Economic and Community Development through its Clean Energy Partnership program, an initiative of the Maine Jobs & Recovery Plan. The partnership was established to work with other state agencies, employers, schools and colleges, workforce training organizations, and industry to expand job opportunities in Maine’s clean energy

and innovators, thus strengthening the regional pipeline to naval maintenance and research and development career fields.

“MSAD 60 NOBLE is excited to be partnering with PNSY in this forward-thinking opportunity for our students and for our community. There is a wide array of opportunities for our staff, students, and families to engage with under the scope of the educational agreement,” said Assistant Superintendent MSAD #60 NOBLE, Susan Austin. “Making these connections will enhance the potential for growth in STEM employment as well as open doors for skilled craftsmen and women. We are looking for-

ward to the relationships we will build and the education we can jointly provide.”

NOBLE schools include Noble High School, Noble Middle School, North Berwick Primary School, Eric L. Knowlton School, Lebanon Schools, Mary Hurd Academy and Vivian Hussey School. NOBLE schools are dedicated to designing learning experiences that help students pursue personal interests and career aspirations, gain applied knowledge and skills, and build strong work habits and character traits. NOBLE is committed to providing a comprehensive clearly communicated system of pathways and supports to allow

Clean Energy Job Board, Training Directory

Jobseekers and Maine-based employers hiring for clean energy job can join the Network, post jobs, explore open positions, and learn about clean energy training programs in Maine. The Network is free to join and will be promoted through a marketing campaign that will kick off later this year.

On May 8, Governor Janet Mills announced that the number of clean energy jobs in Maine has surpassed 15,000, increasing faster in Maine than any other New England state, and the clean energy sector grew to contribute $2.31 billion to Maine’s economy in 2022, according to an independent report released by GEO.

According to the report, Maine’s clean energy sector grew

more than three times faster than the state’s overall economy between 2016 and 2022 and now employs more than 15,020 people, which exceeds pre-pandemic levels and puts Maine on a pathway to reach the goal of 30,000 clean energy workers in Maine by 2030.

“Clean energy can stabilize energy costs, protect our environment and strengthen our economy. Today I am pleased we are launching the Maine Clean Energy Jobs Network, the first recruiting tool and training directory designed to connect Maine-based clean energy employers to interested jobseekers,” said Dan Burgess, Director of the Governor’s Energy Office. “The Network will strengthen Maine’s fast-growing clean energy economy by making good jobs in the sector easy to find and help Maine-based businesses recruit qualified applicants to meet the growing demand for clean energy workers.”

sector has to offer.”

“Maine businesses need a continuous supply of skilled clean energy workers at all levels to maintain Maine’s incredible momentum in the clean energy sector. We’re proud that Maine’s community colleges are a part of that,” said David Daigler, President of the Maine Community College System. “We’re committed to providing a wide range of high-quality, affordable, and relevant clean energy training programs, and this new website is a great way to connect jobseekers with the training that works for them. Everything’s available to motivated jobseekers: free short-term programs, stackable credentials, and two-year degree programs that lead to great highwage and meaningful work.”

all to reach their goals. By giving faculty and students the ability to work with industry experts to better understand career opportunities, NOBLE is delivering on their vision to help students explore paths that will make them contributing members of their respective communities.

skills and resources to build careers in the clean energy field. In 2022, GEO awarded $2.9 million in grants to nine entities for clean energy workforce development programs to attract new workers, provide career training and upskilling, increase diversity and representation, and facilitate entry into the clean energy job market. In December 2023, the office awarded another $1.3 million in grants to three entities to support clean energy innovation through new business accelerator and incubator programs to be launched in Portland, Brunswick, and Waterville.

“The Network is a gamechanger for clean energy businesses who are looking to grow and scale operations in Maine,” said Eliza Donoghue, Executive Director of the Maine Renewable Energy Association. “Having this website as a resource for employers and jobseekers will not only allow renewable energy businesses to thrive in Maine but will also help raise awareness of the fulfilling and exciting career opportunities Maine’s growing clean energy

“The expanding clean energy sector holds great opportunities for everyone in our communities, including people with disabilities, women, New Mainers, veterans, and youth,” said Laura Fortman, Commissioner of the Maine Department of Labor.

“For those who may not have a background in energy but are interested in learning industry skills, the Network will provide clear training pathways to these careers, including pre-apprenticeship and paid registered apprenticeships.”

Using $2 million in Federal funds through congressionally directed spending secured by U.S. Senator Angus King and Representative Chellie Pingree, GEO is now seeking applications for clean energy and energy efficiency workforce development and training programs through a Request for Applications (RFA). Elizabeth Poole, 90

YORK – Elizabeth “Lizzy” Poole of York and Cudjoe Key, FL, passed away on May 13, 2024, peacefully, under her loving daughter’s care.

Born March 18, 1934, in Boston, MA, Lizzy was the daughter of the late Charles Lester and Marjoire (Welch) Lester of Chestnut Hill, MA and Raymond, ME. Lizzy attended Beaver Country Day and graduated Bridgton Academy in 1953. She went on to study at the University of Maine, University of New England (Westbrook Junior College), University of Hokkaido in Japan, and Maine Photographic Workshops.

In 1957, while working for the Maine House of Representatives in Augusta, she met her first husband, Emery Beane, Jr. and had two children, Charles and Nancy Beane.

In 1979, Lizzy married her current husband, Herbert S. Poole, and they split their time between York and Cudjoe Key, FL, enjoying deep sea fishing, bicycling, swimming, organic gardening and gourmet cooking. Lizzy was known for her fish “chowdah” (a family favorite), and loved making fruit salad each morning for the local iguanas. She loved music and humor, especially Dave Barry books.

While living in Maine,

Lizzy’s professional roles included working as a journalist, photojournalist, poet, copywriter, elementary school teacher, women’s rights activist, secretary to the Maine Trade Commission and Commissioner of Agriculture, lobsterwoman, and fisherwoman.

Her writings and photographs are part of the Maine Women Writers Collection Archives at UNE in Biddeford, the Stanley Museum in Kingfield, and the Owls Head Transportation Museum. Her work was published in Yankee Magazine and various Maine publications, and exhibited at the Harlow Gallery in Hallowell.

Throughout her life, Lizzy’s passion was being an activist for women’s rights, peace and the environment. She wrote and published her own feminist newspaper, Fish Rapper Digest (later called Radical Journey), Maine’s only feminist publication. She was the Chairwoman of the Publication Committee for the Maine Organic Farmers & Gardeners Association (MOFGA), served on the Boards of Directors of the Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF), the Maine Women’s Lobby on the Maine Governor’s Transportation Advisory Committee, and the Stanley Museum. She was a member of the League of Women Voters and the National Organization for Women (NOW). Lizzy traveled to Cuba with the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples to promote peace. She also helped to create the Town of York’s recycling program.

She is survived by her adored husband, Herbert S. Poole of Cudjoe Key, FL; beloved daughter Nancy Beane Kolligian and husband Mark of Franklin, MA; granddaughter Bailey Kolligian and husband Shane Moorehead of Plainville, MA; and grandson Max Kolligian and fiancé Haley Rudin of John’s Island, SC. She was predeceased by her son Charles E. Beane of Camarillo, CA.

In her honor, the family asks to do some of the things Lizzy loved most: pet a dog,

eat ice cream directly out of the carton, go swimming, grow vegetables, have a tequila sunrise, and spread peace and laughter wherever you go!

A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom at www.wilpf.org/ donations-and-support.

The Charles F. Oteri and Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St., Franklin, MA, is honored to assist the Poole family. Visit the guestbook at www.oterifuneralhome.com.

KENNEBUNK -

Norway Savings Team Members Help “The Center” Thrive Church on the Cape Welcomes Music Director Paul Stephan

The idea sprang from Annie and Hank Spaulding’s shared and painful experience of watching their parents age and become isolated from the community. Just over 34 years later, that idea has turned into one of the most impactful and revered organizations in southern Maine.

Located on 175 Port Road in Kennebunk, The Center is a nonprofit organization that serves over 500 adults, ages 50 and over, by offering a wide variety of community outreach programs that provide support, sensitivity, and smiles to residents in Kennebunk and beyond.

“The Center remains the focal point for seniors in the Arundel, Kennebunk, and Kennebunkport communities. Members come together on a daily basis for interaction, health and fitness, education, and the opportunity to meet new people,” said Jason Fitzgerald. “It’s an organization with a sole mission of togetherness.”

Fitzgerald is the Market & Indirect Relationship Manager RVP for Norway Savings Bank and served on The Center’s Board of Trustees for nearly a decade. He is one of many NSB team members who have offered their time, knowledge, and expertise to the organization over the years, including as volunteers and two current board members Amanda Drouin (NSB Branch Manager and Retail Lender in Saco) and Julie Richardson (NSB Personal Banker in Kennebunk).

In addition, NSB has contributed tens of thousands of dollars to The Center, including a $2,500 donation last month.

“Norway Savings Bank has been a generous sponsor for years,” said Bridget Dempsey, Executive Director of The Center. “The NSB team members who have volunteered are highly skilled and community minded. They have strengthened our operations with their active support. We truly appreciate the bank’s community involvement and their commitment to caring for the area’s seniors.”

The Center is a vision that was brought to life in 1990 by the Spauldings, who decided to turn their antique and interior accessories shop, Annie’s Apple, into the Senior Center at Lower Village – now known simply as “The Center” – a place for the community’s seniors to gather, meet new friends, and enjoy a variety of activities.

Today, the list of activities and offerings stretches page after page, including games, a walking group, crochet classes,

wellness workshops, luncheons, crafting, book clubs, movies, art sessions, yoga, and dancing. The Center also offers the chance for seniors to add skills and knowledge through specialized gatherings like a French Club, finance workshops, a mindfulness course, a ukulele group, technology seminars, and the opportunity to schedule free and private meetings with a lawyer to ask legal questions. A caregiver support group provides solace for those caring for seniors as they navigate their journey.

“I think The Center’s mission to provide support and companionship for the community’s seniors is important to the wellbeing of our community as a whole,” said Richardson. “Volunteering for The Center inspires me to find ways to build connections with the people around me.”

The Center continues to flourish in the middle, standing as a source of support and community for people of all ages.

“During our walks in life, friendship and socialization is a huge part of what makes us the way we are. As we get older, sometimes our friendships and ability to socialize gets interrupt-

ed due to various reasons. To be able to have a place where you can meet with friends, enjoy similar hobbies together and even be able to share life stories, the good and the bad, is like a diamond in the rough,” said Drouin. “The Center is not just a ‘55+ community center’ to our members, but a beacon of hope. Our community wouldn’t be able to have this amazing place to be if it wasn’t for the dedicated staff, board members and volunteers who truly believe in this mission.”

Founded in 1866, Norway Savings Bank is a leading mutual banking and financial services company headquartered in Norway, ME. It has received an “Outstanding” rating for three consecutive Community Reinvestment Act Exams from the FDIC. Norway Savings has also received the Best Place for Working Parents designation in 2022 and 2023 and was recognized with the “Best Wellness Employer – Gold Certification” for the fifth year in a row by Wellness Workdays.

CAPE PORPOISE -

Energetic, engaging, and enthusiastic about the spiritual power of music, the newly appointed Church on the Cape (COTC) organist and music director looks forward to learning from and growing with the established musical program in place.

Paul Stephan took on the role as the organist and music director at the Church on the Cape in September of 2023, with a goal of celebrating the talent and capabilities of the parishioners and those who have created a solid musical foundation at the historical church over the years.

“The Church on the Cape is a wonderful congregation, full of giving, gracious, happy people. The music program is in great shape-the choir is vibrant, filled with many people who love to bring their music into the Church.” He added, “I have eclectic tastes in music and love everything from classical to gospel and country. As a director, I like to showcase the best that the people I’m working with can give. But I also like to urge them to be a little bit better than they thought they could be. I love it when someone

‘ups their game’ and grows.” Parishioner Kathy Berger said, “Church on the Cape is known for its beautiful music, talented musicians, and singers. We were so excited to welcome Paul Stephan as our music director, organist, and pianist. Paul brings energy and superb musicality to our Sunday services and music programs. We welcome the public to visit and enjoy an hour of peace and music at COTC.”

KFL Showcases L. Randal Boyd

KENNEBUNK -

The Speers Gallery at the Kennebunk Free Library (KFL) presents the exhibit, “Seeking the Quiet Within,” by L. Randal Boyd of Kennebunk. Boyd’s two-dimensional works feature oil on canvas, mixed media, and several prints of personal observations.

According to the artist, “This is my first ‘one-man’ show, and intentionally my last. As my life ebbs, naturally, I consider how I wish to be remembered – as an artist. Hopefully, viewers will see a work that engages their own memories and our shared emotions.”

Four of the nineteen works were completed prior to 1999, and the others since the fall of 2019. Since 2019, Randal has also painted an additional ten works privately owned and not on display. No work in his exhibit is for sale.

Randal said one main feature of his life are the many recurrent voices intoning these

similar themes. “Why, you could have been in this profession; you could have done this with your life; you might have been well remembered had you become this. But ... I have been a veteran, a darkroom film developer, a tailored suit salesman, an air conditioner installer, a truck driver, land surveyor, a vice president of a government union, and an engineering instructor. And yet, after retiring with 38 years of service from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, I am happy to finally accept my own artistic ‘gift’ from my grandmother, Clara Marie Sands Boyd, and as Bob Dylan said, ‘all the faces who brought me here’.”

The public is invited to view the exhibit in the library’s Speers Gallery, June 3-28, at 112 Main Street, Kennebunk, during regular library hours when the gallery is not in use for library programs. For more information, visit www.kennebunklibrary.org.

“Write Your Life” Memoir

WELLS -

Everyone has a story to tell, and now is the time to tell yours.

“Write your Life” is a new program that explores memoir writing, led by Bill Farr, PhD. Classes are hosted at the Historical Society of Wells and Ogunquit (HSWO), 938 Post Road (US Rte. 1), Wells.

The series is designed to provide participants with an opportunity to begin or continue writing a memoir. During the sessions, writers will explore memoirs, try memoir writing techniques, and begin writing their own life story in a safe and supportive environment. There will be no grades, only encouraging suggestions within a workshop structure. No writing experience is required, all writers will need is the motivation to write a memoir and a desire to share your life experiences on paper. Word processing expertise helps

the student liaison for the event. Pride in the ‘Bunks is proudly sponsored by the Kennebunkport Resort Collection, Old Vines Wine Bar, Kennebunk Savings, South Congregational Church, the Kennebunk-Kennebunkport-Arundel Chamber of Commerce, Daytrip Society, and numerous other businesses and organizations.

cipal cellist of the Boston Lyric Opera.

Featured composers include three of the most prodigious composers of the Classical and Romantic eras: Franz Schubert (1797-1828), Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827), and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). All were child prodigies and were thought to have crossed paths as adults in Vienna, influencing one another’s music.

Brent Selby, cellist and teacher, is from the small town of Bath, NC. Up until age eleven, Brent thought he would end up farming crops like his father, but after seeing Yo-Yo Ma perform on PBS, he decided he was interested in music; specifically, the cello. Luckily, retired violinist Doris Hamilton had recently moved to the area and agreed to teach him. Selby earned his bachelor’s degree from the New England Conservatory studying with Natasha Brofsky and then went on to study privately with violinist Mela Tenenbaum. In addition to performing with various local ensembles, he began teaching cello for Lifelong Music Academy in Franklin, MA, where he has been teaching for over a decade. In 2018, Selby joined the Rhode Island Philharmonic’s cello section, and in 2021 he was appointed assistant principal cellist of the Portland Symphony Orchestra. In 2022, Selby was appointed principal cellist of the Rhode Island Philharmonic, and in 2024 he was appointed prin-

STATEWIDE -

In-Person FEMA Assistance Extension Approaches

The last day for in-person assistance from FEMA or the SBA is this upcoming Monday, June 3, but online applications will still be accepted until Tuesday, June 4, the end of the 15-day grace period.

The final day for in-person assistance at the Disaster Recovery Centers (FEMA and SBA) and Business Recovery Centers (SBA only) was Monday, May 20, with an automatic 15-day grace period. SBA Business Disaster Loans can cover damaged rental properties and fishing/ lobstering equipment (boats, docks, traps, line, inventory, etc.), for as low as 4% interest rate with a 30-year term. Those offered a loan will have two months to decide, and can easily decline the loan offer at no cost.

The SBA Office of Disaster Recovery & Resilience works alongside FEMA when there is a Presidential Disaster Declaration, such as the flood-

ing that occured across the state on January 10 and 13 of this year. SBA offers low-interest, long-term loans to cover damages not covered by insurance, FEMA or another source. These loans are available to homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and nonprofit organizations who experienced storm-related damage from January 9-13, 2024. Residents of Cumberland, Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo, Washington or York County, who experienced physical damage to their home, personal property, business or non-profit, can apply for a low-interest loan from the SBA. There is no cost to apply, and no interest or payments for the first year of the loan. If the loan is paid off within the first year, the borrower a year, the borrower will not have to pay any interest. Those who have already used a credit card or obtained a bank loan to pay for repairing a home or business, or to replace business inventory or equipment,

can still get an SBA loan and replace that more expensive debt with a low-interest disaster loan from the SBA.

After the first year with no interest or payments, the interest rate for most homeowners and renters will be 2.688%, 4% for most businesses, and 3.25% for non-profits. For those unsure whether they will need a loan or still waiting for their final insurance settlement, it is advisable to apply by Monday, and decide later. If offered a loan, applicants have two months to decide whether or not to accept it, and can easily decline the loan offer at no cost.

Loan terms can be up to 30 years with relatively small payments. For instance, a $24,000 home loan with a 30-year term would have monthly payments of just over $70. Those with a high insurance deductible can use SBA disaster loans to cover that amount. Additionally, homeowners and businesses can request an additional 20% of the total estimated damage for mitigation purposes, such as installing a stronger roof, sump pump, changing landscaping, building a retaining wall, or elevating the furnace and hot water heater to prevent future damage.

For loans up to $25,000, no collateral is required, and there are no closing costs. Loan recepients do not need to put a lien on

their home or business if the loan amount is $25,000 or less. Based on the estimated damage and the ability to repay, homeowners can borrow up to $500,000 for home damage, and homeowners and renters can borrow up to $100,000 to repair or replace damaged personal property. Businesses can borrow up to $2 million for a combination of physical damage, mitigation, and working capital. Those who did not suffer any physical damage but experienced a drop in sales income due to indirect effects of the disaster, can borrow money to cover monthly expenses. For those with damage, it is crucial to register with FEMA first to see if any grant money is available. After registering, those above a certain income level may receive a letter stating they have been referred to the SBA for a loan. FEMA may still provide temporary housing and basic repairs if the home is uninhabitable. It is important to follow through and apply for a loan if referred to the SBA, even if the loan is not desired. If the loan is denied, applicants may be referred back to FEMA for possible additional grant assistance for basic personal property needs.

The application process involves several steps. If a letter or notification online indicates that the application has been declined or withdrawn, it is important to check if additional information

is needed. Upload the required information before clicking on the “Reacceptance” or “Reconsideration” buttons, contact the SBA directly by phone or visit any disaster recovery center for assistance. Be sure to include all assets and the income of everyone in the household to demonstrate the ability to repay the loan. If a private road or driveway to a primary residence has enough damage that emergency vehicles cannot reach the home, it is important to register with FEMA to see if they can help. Anything not covered by insurance or FEMA may be eligible for an SBA loan. SBA Disaster Home Loans are only for primary residences, but those with rental property and rental income can apply for a business disaster loan to cover uninsured damages to rental property, with an interest rate as low as 4%.

For residents on islands, if a boat and dock are the only means to access a primary residence, damage to these may be eligible for an SBA disaster home loan. However, if the home can be accessed by car, then the boat and dock are likely not eligible. If the occupation is in aquaculture, such as fishing, crabbing, or lobstering, a privately-owned boat and dock used for the commercial fishing business may be eligible for an SBA business loan as business equipment.

passion of Sarah, who created a life of artistic and literal freedom for herself in Victorian America.

The Greek Revival house next door is a visitor center incorporating a museum store, programming space, and community meeting space.

At Sayward-Wheeler House, overlooking the York River, free and enslaved people lived in close proximity as the dramatic events of the American Revolutionary War unfolded around them. Enslaved household members Prince and Cato sought freedom, while wealthy and esteemed property owner Jonathan Sayward found himself at the center of turmoil.

On land once home to the Wabanaki people, SaywardWheeler House was owned by one family through direct lineage from 1719 to 1977. The

house changed little in the nineteenth century, due to the declining wealth of Sayward’s descendants and in deference to the family’s patriarch. In the twentieth century, descendant Elizabeth Wheeler purchased the property as a vacation retreat and to preserve her ancestral home. Today, the parlor still contains furniture and portraits that were there on the eve of the Revolution. It is believed to be one of the best-preserved colonial interiors in the nation.

The public is invited to enjoy any of these sites, which offer a wide range of architectural styles, beautiful gardens and landscapes, and authentic stories of true Maine history. Most tours are active between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., but run times do vary from site to site. Admittance is on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, visit www. historicnewengland.org.

Family Health and Fitness Day Returns To York

YORKFamily Health & Fitness Day is back, and it’s bigger and better than ever! Mark calendars for Saturday, June 8, as York Parks and Recreation partners with Inspired Movement and A Welcome Haven to host a free community event promoting health and wellness for the whole family.

Family Health & Fitness Day, celebrated nationally every year on the second Saturday in June, underscores the vital role that local Parks and Recreation organizations play in fostering healthy, active communities.

This year’s event promises a diverse array of wellness activities and resources aimed at empowering individuals to live their

healthiest lives.

From 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., the York Beach Ball Field will come alive with interactive classes, demonstrations, and informational booths showcasing various wellness modalities available in the community. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore and experience a wide range of offerings. Seacoast

Pickleball will be in attendance, along with Green Leaf Holistic Massage, Know Your Options, and much more.

The event kicks off with a rejuvenating Community Yoga session, 8-9:30 a.m., followed by the dynamic Move & Be Balanced class led by Inspired Movement, 9:30-10:15 a.m. At 10:15 a.m., Strong Girls United will lead Strong Minds and Bodies, a high-energy workout designed to empower both body and mind. Finally, the morning concludes with Shake It Up!, and invigorating dance fitness class led by Rhonda and the Yorkettes. The Yorkettes is a popular dance group who went viral last year for their flash mob at Short Sands Beach.

Whether one is looking to break a sweat, discover new wellness practices, or simply enjoy a fun-filled morning with family and neighbors, Family Health & Fitness Day has something for everyone. Attendees are welcome to drop by for any or all of the free classes and activities, or simply stop by to learn more about the diverse health and wellness resources available in the area.

Prioritize health and wellbeing while connecting with the community!

Water Safety Tips for Summer

The American Red Cross encourages families to prepare for the fast-approaching summer swim season by learning to be “water smart.” Research shows that participation in formal water safety and swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% for one to four-year-olds.

“Before families head out to pools, beaches and lakes, it’s important for all family members to learn and review critical water safety skills,” said Stephanie Couturier, chief executive

officer, Red Cross Northern New England Region. “Knowing fundamental Red Cross water safety skills will help you feel more prepared for fun outings in, on and around the water.”

Each year, more than 2.5 million people learn to swim through Red Cross’ aquatics programs. The programs incorporate the latest science-based curriculum and industry best practices, helping to keep individuals and families safer while enjoying water activities. Over the last century, the Red Cross has helped to reduce accidental

The ACEN accreditation is an acknowledgement of the college’s commitment to excellence in nursing education and confirms the program’s adherence to quality and effectiveness.

The accreditation process involved a thorough review of YCCC’s program’s curriculum, faculty qualifications, resources, and facilities. Nursing Program Director, Lisa GattiArnold said of the recognition, “The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) is a leading accrediting organization for nursing programs in the United States. The plan to create an accredited Nursing program at YCCC started in 2020. Now that the college has achieved this goal and graduated its first cohort of students, President Michael Fischer stated, “Receiving initial accreditation for our Nursing program is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our faculty, staff, students, and clinical partners. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Maine legislature, Maine Health, and Northern Light Health for their generous support in addressing the pressing nursing shortage. Their investment in community colleges across the state has not only enabled our program expansion but also positioned us to better serve the healthcare needs of our community. This milestone reflects our collective commitment to advancing healthcare education in Maine.”
