This free family oriented event is hosted by the members of Charles S. Hatch Post #79 to benefit local veterans. In addition to cars, trucks, motorcycles and customs, there will be plenty of food, beverages and music to enhance your trip down memory lane. Lots of things have changed since 1934, when 15 gallons of gas for your Plymouth set you back a whole $1.95! One thing

hasn’t changed and that’s the sheer joy, pride and sense of accomplishment that comes with

owning and restoring a vintage auto. This year’s car show features a gorgeous 1934 Plymouth

Sedan that’s been restored and updated by antique car enthusiast Steve Plante, dealer principal of Tri-City Chrysler-DodgeJeep-Ram in Somersworth, NH. Tri-City is a family owned and operated dealership that has been in business for over 50 years, serving the greater Dover, Rochester & Somersworth areas. This award-winning business has won several Best of the Best and prestigious Customer First awards for excellence. Berwick Academy Seniors “Walking Home

SOUTH BERWICK Living in northern Massachusetts, Brown and Yates travel 40 miles and cross two state lines every day to attend Berwick Academy in South Berwick, ME. They decided to use the opportunity of a senior project to explore the towns and communities they pass by every day on their way to school, walking from campus to their hometowns, stopping along the way to volunteer in the surrounding communities and perform music. The inspiration for “Walking Home came when Brown was gifted a copy of Walking to Listen by Andrew Forsthoefel Brown after being awarded Berwick’s annual Blue and White Award last spring. The book describes the author’s four-

thousand mile journey across America to listen – one story at a time. Forsthoefel talked to Vietnam War veterans, cyclists, prison guards, former criminals, homeless people, artists, ministers, authors, and many more who shared their stories. The author learned about his nation, the people within it, and most of all, where he fits into the crazy jigsaw puzzle that is life. The book’s message stuck with Brown as he began his final year at Berwick Academy. In February, while hanging out with Yates and Hamel, the conversation drifted to their upcoming senior projects. In the fall, Brown will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute to pursue a degree in aerospace engineering, Yates will study classics at College of the Holy Cross, and

Hamel will return to the University in Toronto as double major in linguistics and Spanish. Brown suggested they walk from Berwick Academy to their hometowns of West Newbury, MA and Groveland, MA. “Walking home struck a chord with [Yates] and [Hamel] much like it had with me last summer, shared Brown. “Perhaps for different reasons, we all fell in love with the idea of walking from Berwick Academy to Groveland, MA, singing and volunteering the entire way. Maybe this is not the four-thousand mile journey taken by Andrew Forsthoefel to discover what life was, but maybe our 50-mile journey can give us some insight to the land we commute over everyday, yet never gave mind to. We want to connect with people, and share tunes along the way. Thus, “Walking Home was born.

The trio embarked from Berwick Academy on Friday, May 18, after their final class of the year. That evening, they performed a private concert for the residents of Berwick Estates, an assisted living community in downtown South Berwick, ME. Since then, they have volunteered at the Crossroads House, Red Cross, Gather (formerly Seacoast Family Food Pantry), YSCA Thrift Shop and have performed at the Hampton Library, Rye’s after-school program, Market Square in Portsmouth, Wallingford Square in Kittery, and the York Public Library. They will be performing at Berwick’s annual Woofstock celebration this Friday, June 1 at 4 p.m.

need, and a commitment to community service, a hallmark of the scholarship’s namesake. “My father was proud to support Maine’s community colleges and its hardworking students. He would have been honored to be associated with these outstanding recipients, their educational aspirations and their dedication to their families and communities, said Jennifer Wilson on behalf of her family. His investments in Maine’s community colleges exemplified that passion. He understood that Maine’s community colleges not only positively impact the lives of many aspiring individuals and their families, but also have a positive economic impact. Quite simply, he believed that welleducated community college graduates forge a bright future for the State of Maine, said Derek Langhauser, President of the Maine Community College System, in remarks at the awards ceremony. Leon Gorman, the longtime president and CEO of L.L.Bean, was deeply committed to the people and places of Maine. Recognizing the power and potential of Maine’s community colleges to transform people’s lives, Mr. and Mrs. Gorman worked quietly behind the scenes supporting the colleges. Katie Taran, Nicole Villinski and Jay Whitesell received the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) and will experience leadership training with other RYLA students in Raymond, in the end of June. Rachel Lane received the dedicated service award. With assistance from the advisors, Grace Jacobs and CJ Mauger, as well as the Rotary Club liaison Helen Goransson, the Interact students have organized and supported many meaningful projects. This year for example they organized an Halloween can drive for the food pantry, assisted with the South

Berwick Recreation Department’s Easter Egg Hunt and Valentine’s Day dance, assisted with the benefit pancake breakfast for Grahamtastics at GWS, made and delivered lunches for Crossroads House in Portsmouth, and volunteered monthly at the local food pantry and a soup kitchen.

All Marshwood high school students are welcome to join the Interact Club, which meets weekly before the school day begins. For those looking to fulfill community service graduation requirements, this is a fun way to find projects to undertake in the company of a group of great kids that wish to make a difference. ~ News ~ The 1718-2018 Ulster Diaspora Reunion BERWICK In 1718 several ships, carrying emigrants from the north of Ireland, landed in New England dispersing their passengers throughout the frontier lands of Britain’s colonial American “Eastern Frontier. The exodus continued for decades. The District of Maine alone would have over 30 communities of these so called “Scotch-Irish or “Ulster Scots established prior to the American Revolution. While much has been shared in recent years about the Scotch-Irish who travelled through Pennsylvania and down “the great wagon road, relatively little information has been available about those who settled in the northeast. The Maine Ulster Scots Project, MUSP, is dedicated to saving and sharing the stories of the Scotch-Irish in Maine. In cooperation with the University of Ulster and the Saint

Andrew Society of Maine, the Maine Ulster Scots Project will be hosting a celebration of three centuries of history and heritage. The program will include lectures, round tables, tours of historic locations, entertainment and featured speakers. These events will occur on or around the beautiful Bowdoin College campus from August 14-18. People will be attending from around the world. John T. Mann is a Professional Land Surveyor, founder and president of Mann Associates. Inc. a land surveying and consulting firm. He has 43 years experience surveying private and municipal boundaries in southern Maine. His work has been primarily within the “Kennebec and “Casco Bay settlement areas. John is a founder of the Maine Ulster Scots Project. He is also a descendant of Scotch-Irish emigrants who arrived in Maine on

the “Robert in 1718. He is the author of Ulster Scots on the Coast of Maine, Vol. 1, and various other articles. This glimpse of what will happen later this summer should be an inspiration as the labor and research of over a decade, the

hands-on down in the dirt digging, the archaeology, discovery and amassing of information, compilation of data, all come together to reveal hidden local history. No doubt we will learn of the severe winter of 1718 when the “Robert was trapped in the ice, unable to move. And many more facts, stories and incidents nearly forgotten.

This Berwick Historical Society Program is free and open to the public. Donations are always gratefully accepted. For more information on MUSP check out their website at www.maineulsterscots.com. For more information, call the historical society at 207-698-1155 or call the Berwick Public Library at 207-698-5737.

This Plymouth has an interesting provenance that traces from Detroit, Michigan where in August 1934 the one-millionth Plymouth came off the production line, to Berwick, where a prior owner had parked the sedan outside for years wrapped in canvas. Thanks to a lead from North Berwick Auto Center’s Barry Stevens, Steve Plante connected with the owner and recognizing its potential, brought it home. The rest, as they say, is history. The restored Plymouth features a 5.7 Liter hemispherical Combustion Chamber or Hemi V8 engine and took ten years to restore (Steve devoted over 200 hours to the hood alone!). A perfectionist to a fault, he tracked down hundreds of sources searching for original and/or custom parts, and even identified a source for the German-made roof through the MTV show Pimp My Ride! This all steel car, which sports an original frame, has power seats and windows, tilt steering, AC, automatic door locks, a sound system controlled from the front and even jacks for an IPOD! If you want to bring your own “classicâ€? to compete for best, preregistration forms are available at the North Berwick Auto Center, the Berwick town hall, or Tri-City in Somersworth.

He may be alone or he may be with his good friend, Gay, but either way this renowned tap dancer who appeared more than once on the Ed Sullivan Show comes to the dress rehearsals, opening nights and closing nights of all four productions each summer in the barn in the field in Berwick. Diggins is the kind of theater buff who flies to London for a few days to pack in as many shows as he can. But he holds a special place in his heart for Hackmatack Playhouse, where he gets free tickets in exchange for designing the theater’s posters. “Hackmatack is a marvelous place to come, said Diggins, his voice filled with the enjoyment of many performances enjoyed there. “When do you go to theater where you also see bisons out in the field? he asked. “Never. To visit Diggins in his Kittery Point home is to step into an

artistic cornucopia. His charming house sits on a point in Spruce Creek, everywhere reflecting Diggins’s passion, his art and his talent. Ink drawings and caricatures line the stairwell, oil paintings with VanGogh-like colors and textures lean on easels, and photos of Diggins as a tap dancer with the famed Mattison trio rest in a nearby drawer. Exhibited proudly among the riches of years well-lived, you will find a decade of posters chronicling the recent history of Hackmatack Playhouse in Berwick. “You can’t be too arty or fancy because you need to do an image people recognize when they drive by, Diggins said. “Sometimes it’s a cliche but it’s something you have to do. You have to do something that’s interesting, but you can’t make it too complicated or fancy. A 28-year resident of Kittery Point, Diggins began crafting the posters for Hackmatack in 2009 at the request of the theater’s artistic director at the time, Sharon Hilton. Diggins and Hilton were longtime friends from the local

theater scene and she thought his art would make a great addition to the theater’s publicity. In return for his work, Diggins gets free tickets to Hackmatack shows, a benefit he takes full advantage of. He loves being one of the first people to know what plays will be on the Berwick stage each season, but promises he never divulges the information. Although he has done numerous caricatures and paintings, See DIGGINS page 22...

Workshops to be Offered at Arundel Farm Gallery ARUNDEL This summer, Arundel Farm Gallery will be offering a select number of workshops taught by gallery artists who have agreed to share their secrets and techniques. DeAnn L. Prosia, an award winning printmaker and watercolorist, will offer a three day workshop June 8, 9 and 10 which combines drawing and watercolors. The technique, which she developed, is an exciting combination of rich layering, textures and movement. DeAnn says this method is great for people afraid of making mistakes, for mishaps will become an exciting part of the painting. Some drawing experience is helpful but not necessary for this workshop. Jack Brumbaugh, who had a solo exhibition at the gallery last summer, creates gorgeous oil pastel paintings on canvas.

Brumbaugh will share his 25 years of experience in a three day workshop on June 22, 23 and 24. This flexible medium offers students a wide range of possibilities and learning from this master is a truly unique opportunity. Ann Getsinger, known for her oil paintings and drawings, will have a solo exhibition at the gallery from July 19 to August 19 this summer. She will offer a two day workshop titled “Stimulating Still Life with an Introduction to Still Scapes. Getsinger’s museum quality work is enchanting with elements that always elicit surprise and wonder. She shares her knowledge in this very special two day workshop on August 1 and 2. Finally, gallery owner, Julie Feingold offers a four day workshop on Mondays in June. Feingold shares a contemporary technique she developed to make mosaic masterpieces. If you’ve ever admired old world Italian mosaics but never thought you could create your own, think again! If you have patience and enjoy detail work, the results can be stunning when you learn this technique. More workshops may be added to the schedule throughout the summer and fall. Classes are limited to a minimum of four and a maximum of 8 students, so sign up early to reserve your spot. For students coming in from out of town, there are some accommodations on property. For detailed information on workshops, policies and accommodations, visit the gallery website, or email Julie at info@arundelfarmgallery.com or call 561-702-6396. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Art Show Opens at Morgan Gallery KITTERY “Side-by-Side” is a beautiful exhibit of works by Shawn Pelech and JoAnn Portalupi in the Morgan Gallery at the Kittery Community Center. This exhibit will be shown June through September. The public is invited to an Opening Reception with refreshments on Wednesday, June 6 at 5:30 p.m. Come hear the artists talk about their works and their process. Painting can be a solitary endeavour. But even the most solitary endeavour occurs within a context. When two painters work side-by-side over a period of years, that context includes critiques, conversations, and shared arts experience that build a rich sensibility that can trickle into the work at hand. In such fashion, Shawn Pelech and JoAnn Portalupi have set their easels side-by-side as plein air painters along the eastern coast from Lubec, Maine to Key West, Florida. Likewise, they set painting challenges for themselves inside each other’s studios. Painting is sometimes a struggle; in these moments they

She taught art in the public schools, including three years in the Frisbee School, which now has become the Kittery Community Center. Since retiring from public education, Shawn continues to teach painting to adults in her studio, and spends most of her time making art. JoAnn Portalupi is a painter from Lee, NH. She wrote and taught for years providing staff development to teachers across

the country in the area of writing instruction. She began painting – and being a student of painting – in earnest in 2000, and has transitioned from teaching to painting full time. JoAnn and Shawn’s work has been displayed singularly, and together, at various galleries throughout the Seacoast area and in Lubec, Maine. They are both juried members of the New Hampshire Art Association. This gallery is free and open to the public during KCC business hours and also open during performances in the STAR Theatre. The Morgan Gallery is located in the Kittery Community Center at 120 Rogers Rd in Kittery. For more information: www.kitterycommunitycenter. org or call 207-439-3800.

KENNEBUNKPORT The Kennebunkport Festival will take place June 4 through June 10, after 40-plus community members representing restaurants, business owners, hoteliers, home owners, and sponsors voted unanimously to move forward with the popular series of fundraising events, designed to raise money for a variety of charitable foundations. “Overwhelmingly, the community believes passionately in the potential of the festival as a positive force in the Kennebunks and will do everything possible to make it a success,” said newly appointed festival director Emily McConnell. Events at the new Kenne-

McConnell advised that people who purchased tickets prior to the change in event management should seek a full refund from Maine Magazine and then repurchase tickets through individual event hosts or through the new website, www.thekennebunkportfestival.com, when they become available. The charitable giving component remains the focus and most important reason for continuing with the festival. Within this new format, McConnell anticipates that each event will support one or more local not-for-

This year, they in turn are joined by ‘cellist Bruce Coppock for what will be their final appearance in Ogunquit. In future, Hill plans to reduce his performance schedule to allow for semi-retirement. On Friday, June 8, 7:30 p.m. at the Dunaway Center, Boston Chamber Music will play works by Muczynski, Rachmaninoff, Martinu and Brahms. Town Manager Patricia Finnigan will open the concert with a welcome, a tribute to Hill is planned, and a champagne reception will follow the performance. The following Friday, June 15, 7:30 p.m. at the Barn Gallery, the DaPonte String Quartet will return to OPA after a long absence. Performances by this Quartet, many of them at the Barn Gallery, also go back to the beginning of OPA’s festivals, and in addition to their many appearances at OPA, DaPonte has also developed an enthusiastic following at other venues in Southern Maine. They too have been long-time friends with Thomas Hill, and collaborations have occurred

many times over the years. Thomas Hill has served as principal clarinetist of The New Haven Symphony, The Long Beach Symphony, The Handel and Haydn Society Orchestra of Boston, The Mainly Mozart Festival Orchestra, The San Diego Symphony, and The Cascade Festival Orchestra in Oregon. He has appeared with both The Boston Symphony and The Boston Pops. Bruce Coppock has enjoyed a long musical career as cellist, teacher and management executive. He served twice as president and managing director of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, a position in which he served both as the artistic and the executive director. Prior to Saint Paul, Coppock was deputy director of Carnegie Hall and executive director of the Saint Louis Symphony.

Randall Hodgkinson achieved recognition as a winner of the International American Music Competition for pianists sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation. He has appeared frequently as soloist and chamber music artist in festivals throughout the United States. His solo debut with the Boston Symphony Orchestra was presented both in Boston and at Carnegie Hall. The DaPonte String Quartet have been broadcast over nation-wide radio and television programs in both the United States and Canada. Tickets are $18 in advance; $20 at the door; $5 student; $30 series, and may be purchased at the Barn Gallery, Dunaway Center, Ogunquit Camera Shop, Ogunquit Playhouse Downtown Box Office, and Ogunquit Welcome Center, or online at www.ogunquitperformingarts.org.

NFPA Underscores Electric Shock Hazards in Pools, Marinas The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

swimming pools, hot tubs and spas, on board boats and in the waters surrounding boats, marinas and launch ramps. Electric Shock Drowning happens when faulty wiring sends an electrical current into the water. The current then passes through the body and causes paralysis. When this happens, a person can no longer swim and ultimately drowns. “Most people are not aware, including boat and pool owners and swimmers, are not aware of the risks of electric shock drowning, said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “NFPA is raising awareness of this troubling trend and sharing our water safety resources so that everyone can safely enjoy summer water activities. Tips for swimmers Never swim near a marina, dock or boatyard, or near a boat while it’s running. While in a pool, hot tub or spa, look out for underwater lights that are not working properly, flicker or work intermittently. If you feel a tingling sensation while in a pool, immediately stop swimming in your current direction. Try and swim in a direction where you had not

felt the tingling. Exit the water as quickly as possible; avoid using metal ladders or rails. Touching metal may increase the risk of shock. Tips for pool owners If you are putting in a new pool, hot tub or spa, be sure the wiring is performed by an electrician experienced in the special safety requirements for these types of installations. Have a qualified electrician periodically inspect and — where necessary — replace or upgrade the electrical devices or equipment that keep your pool, spa or hot tub electrically safe. Have the electrician show you how to turn off all power in case of an emergency. Make sure any overhead

lines maintain the proper distance over a pool and other structures, such as a diving board. If you have any doubts, contact a qualified electrician or your local utility company to make sure power lines are a safe distance away. Tips for boat owners Avoid entering the water when launching or loading a boat. Docks or boats can leak electricity into the water causing water electrification. Each year, and after a major storm, have the boat’s electrical system inspected and upgraded by a qualified marine electrician to be sure it meets the required codes of your area, including the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC). Health & Fitness Students “Rally for Upcoming Blood Drive at WJHS WELLS The Wells Junior High School student body filled the seats in the Ward Gymnasium on May 23 for a blood drive “rally featuring a student quiz show presented by the American Red Cross. This was in advance of an actual blood drive to be held by the Red Cross at WJHS in the Ward Gym on June 4 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The panel for the quiz show consisted of representatives from the school’s grades who sat in front of the audience to answer questions from Sherry Woodes of the Red Cross’ Portland office. Woodes came to the presentation with two student volunteers from Greely High School who assisted her while appearing as a big brown dog and a “very large drop of blood with eyes. Woodes indicated that employing a quiz show format before a group of students is an idea that she tried for the first time at WJHS. “It

was a great response. The kids were fantastic, she said. Woodes, the Donor Recruitment Account Manager for York County, indicated that this informational and motivational event at the school was part of the Red Cross’ Future Donor Program targeted to educate, engage and motivate a middle school audience. Despite being too young to donate blood, this presentation is to communicate to them that they can still play a role in helping in the ongoing cause to build up critical blood supplies. Woodes said that she organizes and coordinates the blood drives in York County, averaging 25 each month. Woodes pointed out in the presentation that there are many ways students can help make a blood drive successful including informing and motivating their parents and other adults to come to an upcoming blood drive at their school. “They need to go out and talk to adults. They need to let adults know about the blood

drive and the importance of donating blood, said Woodes.

which is why we must work hard every day to constantly replenish the supply.

“Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood, commented Woodes later. “It is the blood (that is) already on the shelves that saves lives,

BUSINESS & FINANCE H-2B Visas Available Across Country

WASHINGTON, D.C. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that an additional 15,000 H-2B visas will be made available to employers across the country to fill seasonal jobs. U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King had urged the Administration to release these visas to allow Maine small businesses to hire additional temporary employees and help support their operations during the busy summer tourist season. “Maine’s ability to host the millions of visitors to our state depends upon H-2B workers, who are essential to supplement our Maine workforce to staff the seasonal businesses in our tourism and hospitality industry. Without their help, many of these hotels and restaurants would be unable to open or would have to curtail their operations, hurting local communities and Maine workers employed by these business-

es,” said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. “Although the release of these visas is a step in the right direction and will help some Maine small businesses hire the additional temporary workers they need to keep their doors open this summer, the delay as well as the limited number of visas issued underscore the need for reform. We will continue our efforts to improve the H-2B program so that Maine’s tourism industry does not continue to suffer from a lack of workers.” In April 2018, Senators Collins and King wrote to DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Department of Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta, calling on them to quickly release these additional visas. H-2B workers support American jobs and small businesses. Every H-2B worker creates or sustains 4.64 American jobs on average according to a study conducted by the American Enterprise Institute. Maine Real Estate Sales Jump 8.59 Percent STATEWIDE Tighter inventory in the single-family existing home real estate market has led to an uptick in sales prices and home sales. According to Maine Listings, 1,201 homes were sold in April—an 8.59 percent increase compared to April of 2017. Sales prices are also on the rise; a median sales price of $200,000 represents a jump of 8.11 percent comparing April 2018 to April 2017. The MSP indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. “Our April statewide statistics show continued high volume and confidence in home ownership. With limited forsale inventory and tight markets in many areas of Maine, we’re seeing increasing sales prices. 2019 National Defense Authorization Act Approved WASHINGTON, D.C. “Each year, the National Defense Authorization Act lays out the tools our military needs to ensure national security, and each year, there are a number of provisions that reinforce the importance of Maine to the defense of our nation,” said U.S. Senator Angus King (I-Maine). “This year’s legislation includes funds for continued shipbuild-

ing at Bath Iron Works, military construction to modernize Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, as well as the production of aircraft parts and other military requirements at additional sites throughout Maine. The Committee’s passage of this legislation is welcome news, as the bill will continue to support goodpaying Maine jobs that boost our security at home and abroad.”

The National Association of Realtors today released statistics showing a 5.5 percent increase in the national MSP to $259,900. The regional Northeast experienced an 11 percent dip in sales, while the regional MSP rose 2.8 percent to $275,200. Below are two charts showing statistics for Maine and its 16 counties. The first chart lists statistics for the month of April only, statewide. The second chart compares the number of existing, singlefamily homes sold (units) and volume (MSP) during the rolling quarter of February, March and April of 2017 and 2018. Once Diggins gets the names of the four shows on the schedule each season - usually in deepest winter - he gets right to work right away. Usually the posters are ready within a few days. This year he worked to make the “Dial M For Murder: poster have just the eerie feel he was looking for, and ring a bell with older people who might be familiar with the show. Born in Hampton, Iowa, he served in the US Army during World War II as a performer and then returned stateside to begin a career in tap. He lived in New York and toured with the wellknown Mattison Trio. By 1970 he had made a career change to become a professor of psychology at Brooklyn College., but kept dancing all the while. He and his later partner, Jack, spent time in Kennebunkport and when they retired in 1990, they moved north, finding this house in Kittery Point. Diggins does not take for granted that his days have been rich in art and accomplishments. P.U.P. Bags & Preserves with Kennebunk Land Trust KENNEBUNK The Kennebunk Land Trust is hosting a social walk for owners and their dogs 10 a.m. Sunday, June 10 at the Butler Preserve, also known as “Picnic Rock. This is a special walk as KLT will be partnering with P.U.P. (Pick Up Plastic) Bags, a local environmental organization created by Jane Schaller and her daughter, Caitlin Martone Cox. P.U.P. Bags helps you walk with purpose! The foldable, reusable bag clips conveniently to your dog’s leash or collar so you can pick up plastic on your walks. Healthy you, healthy dog, healthy planet. A free P.U.P. Bag will be provided to all those who attend. At the walk, folks will be

encouraged to utilize their new P.U.P. Bags to help pick up any plastic/trash at the preserve. All dogs must remain on leash at all times. Owners are expected to bring their own bags for pet waste. Butler Preserve is a gem of a walk and can be described as easy to moderate in terms of difficulty. The trail leads to a large boulder known as Picnic Rock with views of the Kennebunk River. In earlier times, Picnic Rock was a well-known spot where boaters traveling the river would stop and picnic. Now the preserve is enjoyed by people of all ages as a stop on a kayak excursion or to hike. A RSVP is appreciated but not necessary at

info@kennebunklandtrust.org or call 207-985-8734. This is a rain or shine event; please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for the weather. Call 207-985-8734 for more details.

Safe Haven Humane Society Animal Welfare Society KENNEBUNK Let’s have an honest conversation‌are you a little high maintenance? A clean freak? Type A? But most importantly enjoy investing in and taking care of something for a greater purpose? Then Roxy may be the dog for you! Eight year old Roxy is quite the character and true to her bull terrier breed; lively, loyal, a touch of obsessive (aren’t we all), and sweet as pie. Roxy does great with all ages, enjoys the company of cats, but is picky about living with dogs. She takes her self-titled role as princess a little to seriously sometimes. From Roxy’s awesome foster mom: “I’ve been fostering this princess for 5 months now, why so long you ask? Because (in the name of love), she is a hot mess. Roxy has extreme allergies, and when she came to us at AWS they hadn’t been

properly diagnosed and cared for. Through tedious diagnostics and trials, we have gotten her skin under control, and she is finally comfortable. Roxy’s medical needs are lifelong, and she is looking for a home that can accommodate those needs both environmentally and financially. Roxy’s routine includes foot soaks, every other day bathing, and weekly immunotherapy injections administered at home, along with other allergy management protocols. Roxy is

WELLS Pudge is a classic shorthaired calico with all the beautiful markings a multicolored beauty could wish for. Her personality is so sweet and invites affection from all. Diagnosed for diabetes, Pudge is comfortable to be injected with insulin twice daily by the devoted Safe Haven caregivers at our adoption center. She never rebels, never makes a fuss, is simply grateful for the care and love she receives. She is simply no bother at all. This darling girl requires a special diet so she can’t mingle with the other kitties, or they might eat her food. So Pudge is restricted to a quiet room by heravailable by appointment only. Interested parties, please submit an adoption survey to her foster mom via email at nicky@animalwelfaresociety.org. Questions? Call (207) 985-3244 and ask to speak to Nicky.

self. Our busy volunteers visit her whenever they can, but not often enough. She needs and deserves more love, more one-on-one time, and that can only come with a home of her own. Please visit her -- and don’t let her diabetes stop you from adopting her. Many of us with diabetic animals enjoy the rewards of taking extra care of extra special kitties! Come and visit Pudge at our adoption center, on Rt. 1 next to the Wells Public Library, open 11-4 Tuesday-Saturday, 207-6461611. On summer vacation? Consider donating a few hours a week as a seasonal volunteer at our adoption center in Wells. The kitties always need extra loving hands, catroom “buddies who play with them, brush them, and talk to them. Our five free-roaming cat rooms are filled with sunshine, comfy chairs and happy cats. There’s nothing sad at our shelter. We’ve always been No Kill, and our kitties are treat-

ed like family because they are! So join us! Our thrift shop is seeking donations of quality items -only the best, most useful and most unique for our customers, and they respond by eagerly shopping which supports our vet bill fund. Items we’re now seeking: beach and cottage style dÊcor, jewelry, paintings, giftware, kitchenware and garden dÊcor. We’re a 501(c)3 non profit organization so your donation is tax deductible. of January 2018 during the polar arctic freezing weather spell we had, left to fend for themselves! We’re happy to say that he is doing well in foster care, not yet ready however for adoption. Jamie will need an understanding and patient person or family to offer her reassurances that she is safe, loved, and will never be harmed or left out in the cold or hungry ever again! We feel that young children may be too much excitement for this sweet sometimes timid girl who has been through so much already in her short little life. Jamie is current on all of her vaccinations, has been spayed and has passed her wellness exam. Dogs are an unknown, but with gradual introductions could be possible. We currently have available and also ready to find their furever homes, will be available to

meet with this coming Saturday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during Open Adoption hours at our Adoption Facility located at 251 Country Club Rd, Sanford. Appointments to meet Jamie and any of our other cats at other times can be arranged by calling either Marilyn at 207-490-2855 or Amanda at 603-205-3615. Our Capitol Fund which we have only just begun to raise funds for are needed. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, I have never backed up my computer; what method do you recommend on how to do this? And once done, what is a good way (If hard drive crashes) to reinstate what has been backed up? Also, how often do you recommend backing up ones hard drive? Thanks for all you do to help us. Jean Dear Jean, The best method for you to use to backup your computer will depend on what you use your computer for, and what you have on it for data. If you use your computer only for reading email and web browsing, and perhaps playing games, you need a good recovery image, but if you are not adding pictures and documents to your computer there is no need for an ongoing backup program. You might want to create a new image once a year to keep it updated. If you use your computer to store data like pictures, documents, recipes, patterns, knitting directions, music, etc. you will need an ongoing backup routine. I suggest a good backup program like Acronis True Image, and an external hard drive that you plug in to do your backup, then remove it from your computer when the backup is finished so that it is safe from ransomware. Acronis can be set up to do the recovery image. It can also be setup to do the ongoing backup on a regular schedule. If you add new files every week, then backup weekly. If you only add them occasionally, set your backup to once a month. When you need to access the files on your backup, you just use the Acronis software. Just select the backup that contains your files, click “recover files, and follow the prompts to copy the files back to your computer. Business owners need to have a bit more in place, I would be happy to chat with you about your needs if you are running a business and need a robust backup solution. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I just got a new laptop with Windows 10, and I don’t like the new, “Edge browser. I would like to go back to Internet Explorer, but I don’t see it on this computer. Can I put Internet Explorer on my Windows 10 com-

puter? Thanks, Tracy Dear Tracy, Actually, Internet Explorer is already on Your Windows 10 computer, you just have to know how to find it. The easiest way to do this is to press the Windows logo key on your keyboard and type, “Internet Explorer. Windows 10 will search for and find Internet Explorer, and display it in the list of search results. Once you click on “Internet Explorer (IE) and the program opens, there will be an icon for IE on your taskbar. Right click on this icon, and click “Pin To Taskbar. Now, when you want to open Internet Explorer, just click once on the icon on your taskbar. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I am grateful to be able to ask a question that is making me crazy. I have hundreds and hundreds of old photos that are priceless that I need to scan to make them available to all family. In the best world, I would love to give them each a disc with all the photos. My question is - is there a particular program that would make this as simple and easy as possible. I think I probably have to scan each one but I’m looking for a program that I can put the picture, organizing them and then be able to have a space to explain the picture and name the people. And for it to look nice - a little bit polished? Am I dream-

ing? Or is there a program out there? I know that you can hire a service to do all the scanning which would be so awesome, however, it’s not an affordable option for me. Thanks for any direction!! Sincerely, Lora Dear Lora, You are right that you will need to scan each photo with a scanner. The software that comes with the scanner should make that part easy for you. I like the Epsom Perfection series of scanners, they are high quality (You will get better scans than you will from an inexpensive printer/scanner/copier machine) last a long time (I am on my second one in 20 years) and the software that comes with it has a lot of options. I would scan each photo in .jpg format since that is pretty universal, and the file format will be used for many years to come. You can organize the pictures with a combination of file names (1985summer001. jpg for example) and folders. I usually have one folder for each year, with quarterly folders inside. If there is a big event that year like a wedding, it would get its own folder as well. If you organize them in a program like powerpoint, or publisher, your photos are only as good as the program you use. If the person you send it to doesn’t have that program, or the company making the program stops developing or supporting it, people

would not be able to view the photos. You can add information to the photos in a couple of ways. After you have scanned the image, you can open it in a photo program like Picasa (which is free from Google) and add tags. A tag can be a person’s name, or an event. Once you have tagged your photos in Picasa, the information is part of the picture and can be accessed by right- clicking and clicking on “Properties then look at the “Details tab. Another idea would be to write or type a small description on paper, and scan it with the photo. That way, your description would be part of the image. Once you have your photos scanned and organized into folders, you can burn those folders to a CD or DVD using any burning program. I would just burn it as a data disk, then anyone can use the pictures on their computer. I hope this helps you with your photos. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Have learned so much over the years from you. When you work with windows 10 will you try to find out how to create a shortcut for a webpage you are viewing. Used to be rt. click and then click create shortcut and it would appear on the desktop. it does not work with 10. I appreci-

ate your help, Nancy Dear Nancy, The new browser that comes with Windows 10, the Edge browser, does not have a shortcut for saving a link to a webpage on the desktop. Your options in Edge would be to click the star and save the webpage to your favorites (you could put a shortcut to your favorites folder on your desktop) or you can copy the website address from the address bar, right click on your desktop, point to “New click on “Shortcut and paste the address in the new shortcut dialog box. Not the easiest solutions, but the best workarounds I could find. However, Internet Explorer still has that feature, and it is still available in Windows 10. Just check out my article above on finding Internet Explorer in Windows 10 and you should be all set. In addition to IE, you could also use Chrome or Firefox. In those browsers, you just drag from the address bar to the desktop to create a shortcut. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Vintage Baseball Weekend at the Brick Store Museum

KENNEBUNK During the weekend of June 9-10, Brick Store Museum will present its second annual Vintage Base Ball Weekend, with special events surrounding 1860s base ball. The weekend will culminate in a Vintage Base Ball game played between the Dirigo Base Ball Club of Maine and the New Hampshire Granite at 11 a.m. on Sunday, June 10. The game will be played on Kennebunk’s Parsons Field, at the corner of Dane Street and Park Street. Tickets to each of the events are only $5 per person, with children under 16 free. “Making history come alive is our job,” Executive Director Cynthia Walker said. “Now, mix history with baseball, and we have quite the event. It’s something that’s touched all

of our lives. We hope visitors will take a trip back in time with us to the 1860s, when baseball was just starting.” On Saturday, June 9, from 10 a.m.–3 p.m., participants can explore the Brick Store Museum’s 1860s Day, featuring the 3rd Maine Regiment reenactors, who will share experiences about camp life, medical history, and 1860s fashion. Also included in the day is a pop-up baseball exhibit with a complimentary beer (or soda!) from Shipyard Brewing, and baseball snacks. Visitors will also hear more about the rules they’ll see at Sunday’s game, which are vastly different from the rules we watch in Major League Baseball today. Tickets to this event are $5 per person, with children under 16 free.

...BALL from page 36 inning that ended up being the difference. Cole Hernon led off the inning with a walk, followed by a single from Brady Desjardins. Ryan Sullivan roped a double in the gap that scored Hernon. Spencer Aubin finished the inning by hitting a two-out double that increased the lead to 3-0. Abbey was able score an unearned run both in the first and third innings Sunday, June 10 will feature the big game! Beginning at 11 a.m. on Kennebunk’s Parsons Field, participants are asked to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the game, during which the teams will play by 1860s rules (no gloves or helmets, for starters!). A concession stand will be on site; plus 50/50 raffles and giveaways. Tickets are $5 per person, and free for children under 16. The Vintage Base Ball Weekend has been generously sponsored by Shipyard Brewing Company, Kennebunk Savings Bank, Port & Shore Realty, Huston & Company, Tracey Bricker/State Farm Insurance, Deering Lumber, Huston & Company, Redfin, and Hannaford.

to cut the deficit to 3-2. Aubin helped secure the victory with his performance on the mound. With this being only his second start as a pitcher, the freshman showed true moxy. He was able

to close the door on a number of occasions when Abbey had men in scoring position. Abbey finished the game leaving seven runners on base. Aubin finished the game allowing only five hits.

...ROW from page 37 season in school history by finishing third in the varsity eight race and as a team at the NCAA Division III Women’s Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida The team finish is the highest of

any NCAA team sport in school history. This year’s championships was held May 25-26 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, FL, hosted by the University of Central Florida.

...DEAN from page 22 wood I have never had an injury” and crediting his health in part to his eating habits: “I don’t eat red meat, dessert or lunch.” As he walks out to the small rustic barn where he dances alone for more than an hour every day,

he stops to again count his blessings. “I’ve been very lucky that I’ve been in the right place at the right time,” he said. “And there are a lot of things I love to do.” (Story credit Hackmatack Playhouse facebook page.)
