WHS Senior Receives National Recognition for Photograph
Wells High School senior Lilly Arbelo and her National Gold Key Award winning photo, “Gentle Suffocation” (Photo from Emily Knight)
WELLS Earlier this year, Lilly Arbelo, a senior at Wells High School, received a prestigious Gold Key award in the national portion of the 2021 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. This is for a creative photograph of hers titled, “Gentle Suffocation”. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition is presented annually by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. “I was really excited,” said Arbelo recalling the day when she first learned of this honor from her art teacher Emily Knight. “I remember I was
kind of having a rough day and then my teacher, Miss Knight (called).” According to Arbelo, both she and Knight shed a few tears while discussing this news. “I did not expect this at all,” said Arbelo. “From the 230,000 artworks submitted to this year’s competition, Lilly is one of approximately 800 students who will receive the National Gold Key Distinction,” commented teacher Knight in an email. “This is an exciting and well-deserved recognition of Lilly’s hard work and talent.” According to Knight, six Maine students re-
ceived a National Gold Key Award this year. According to Arbelo, she experienced PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) during her freshman and sophomore years resulting from a lingering situation that gave her the sensation of subtle suffocation. It was that experience that inspired her to create a photo demonstrating her apparent torment and frustration. To create that effect visually she used an old camera of her father’s, some LED lighting of hers, and an ordinary trash See PHOTO page 10...

“21-Gun Salute” Corrected
The Weekly Sentinel published an article in the May 28, 2021 newspaper which erroneously gave meaning to the number in a 21-gun salute. The website www.arlingtoncemetery.mil explains it best as they wrote, “The custom stems from naval tradition, when a warship would signify its lack of hostile intent by firing its cannons out to sea until all ammunition was spent. The British navy developed the custom of a seven-gun salute
because naval vessels typically had seven guns. Because greater quantities of gunpowder could be stored on dry land, forts could fire three rounds for every one fired at sea – hence the number 21. With the improvement of naval gunpowder, honors rendered at sea increased to 21 as well. The 21-gun salute eventually became the international standard.” The 21-gun salute also should not have been referenced along with the folding of the flag during

military funerals since that ceremony actually uses the three-volley salute as a funereal custom (although a military funeral detail can include seven members who each fire three times). “Today, the U.S. military fires a 21-gun salute in honor of a national flag, the sovereign or chief of state of a foreign nation, a member of a reigning royal family, and the president, ex-presidents, and president-elect of the United States. The 21-gun salute is also fired [on certain holidays which include Memorial Day], and the day of the funeral of a president, ex-president or president-elect.” The website www.snopes. com also has an entry to clarify that “the 21-gun salute is often confused with the symbolic act of firing three volleys at military funerals, but these are two completely different rituals.”

Maine National Guard Answers the Call to Perform Final Salute

AUGUSTA For the Maine Army and Air National Guard’s military funeral honors teams, every day is Memorial Day – a day to honor and remember those that have died while serving. They have the distinct honor of performing this service at locations across the state throughout the year. “We know how important this service is to the family and friends of the veteran,” said Staff Sgt. Michael White, noncommissioned officer in charge for the Maine Army National Guard Honor Guard. The custom of military funeral honors formally began in World War I, and was provided in a somewhat limited basis, oftentimes when staffing permitted. This changed in

The Rev. Patrick Gahan will be the celebrant and preacher, and Dr. Harold Stover as music director and organist. Kids’ Bible Activity bags are also available this year. The annual Jazz Concert is set this summer for August 1at 4 p.m. with its wine and cheese reception, and live music by the New Legacy Swing Band. (rain date: August 8). All funds raised from the event go into the church preservation fund. The annual Blessing of the Animals in honor of St. Francis of Assisi Feast day will be held October 3 at the 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. masses. Last year over 100 pets were blest by name with holy water and a prayer by the Rt. Rev. Gary
Lillibridge. Weddings play an important part at St. Peter’s each summer and fall as more and more straight and gay couples are married in the beautiful historic church. Following the Liturgy of the Anglican Church, its beauty, simplicity, and love with God provide couples a lovely way to begin their lives together. For details, email Tammy Mallen at
dtmallen@comcast.net. St. Peter’s was built in 1897 from a bequest by Nannie Dunlap Conorroe. Sited on Christian Hill so that a cross would be visible to sailors at sea, the stone church became well-known to sailors and historians. Among other things, it
showcases stained-glass windows, a carved mahogany altar, and needlepoint stitching on the pew kneelers. Everyone is welcome for Sunday worship, and social hour with food and drinks in the rectory on the ocean’s edge. For more information, email Michael L. Dear Computer Lady, You have often recommended Thunderbird as an email client – I agree that it’s an excellent program and used to use it myself. However, few years ago I switched to using Gmail as a client. It can be set up to retrieve mail from multiple providers, has close to unlimited storage space, is very unlikely to disappear, and best of all, it allows you to get mail from anywhere in the world as long as you have an internet connection. It also has excellent spam filtering, and has all the features you would expect from any modern email
client. Of course, you also get a free Gmail account in addition to any other existing accounts you may have. Fred Dear Fred, You have an excellent point! I actually use Gmail in my everyday work, I can access it on my computer or my phone. I use Gmail to collect mail from several different email addresses, and not only does it filter out the junk, but it does not download mail with known virus attachments. I still have Thunderbird installed and running on my computer however. It serves as my backup of all the mail I have stored in my Gmail account... just in case I ever need it. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, Good morning and thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I have read your column and learned and shared so much over the years. Dear Cathy, All you need is a program that will add a watermark to your photos for you. There are many programs that can do this, but I use a small, free program called Irfanview at www.irfanview.com. Here are the directions: 1. Open Irfanview and open the photo that you want to add a watermark to; 2. With your mouse, draw a box on the picture where you want your watermark to appear; 3. Click on “Edit” in the menu bar, then click on “Insert Text…”; 4. Type the desired text in the text box, select other settings as desired (you will probably want to increase the font size, and make the text semi transparent; 5. Click on the “Preview” button to test, then when you are happy with the results, click the “OK” button to save your changes. If you are going to use a watermark often, you can create an image of your watermark and just use the watermark image option in the Edit menu. ~ Arts & Entertainment ~ Leavitt Theatre to Return with Silent Film Series OGUNQUIT Classics of the silent film era return to the big screen this summer at Ogunquit’s Leavitt Theatre, which will host a season of vintage cinema with live music in the historic facility. The series gives area film fans a chance to see movies from the pioneering days of cinema as they were intended to be shown — on the big screen, with an audience, and accompanied by live music. Most screenings will be Wednesday evenings and will begin on Wednesday, June 9 with ‘The Kid’ (1921), Charlie Chaplin’s classic comedy/drama about the Little Tramp raising an orphan. The series runs through October, concluding with a Hal-
loween screening of the original ‘Nosferatu’ (1922) on Saturday, October 30. Admission for each screening is $12 per person. A total of seven programs will be offered in the series. Films will include Harold Lloyd’s iconic building-climbing comedy ‘Safety Last’ (1923) and the original silent film version of ‘Peter Pan’ (1924). “These are the films that first made people fall in love with the movies, and we’re thrilled to present them again on the big screen,” said Max Clayton, the Leavitt’s manager. The Leavitt, a summer-only moviehouse, opened in 1923 at the height of the silent film era, and has been showing movies to summertime visitors for nearly a century. The silent film series honors
the theater’s long service as a moviehouse that has entertained generations of Seacoast residents and visitors, in good times and in bad. Live music for each program will be provided by Jeff Rapsis, a NH-based performer and composer who specializes in scoring silent films. He uses a digital synthesizer to recreate the texture of a full orchestra. He improvises the music in real time, as the movie is shown. For the full schedule and more information, call 207-6463123 or visit www.leavittheatre. com.

KAA All Member Show: Solstice KITTERY The Kittery Art Association’s newest exhibit of 2021, an all-member show titled “Solstice”, opens on June 3. The Spotlight Wall artist for this show is John Kessler. His website www.jbkessler-artist. com notes that Kessler turned his attention to oil painting after a career in engineering. He describes his paintings as representational in nature but with a bit of impressionistic style, and reminds us that “there is beauty in all sorts of places in this world. As an artist I hope to point out some of these special instances that occur in our everyday lives.”

The museum will be open through October, Tuesdays - Saturdays 1-5 p.m. Due to the restrictions of last year and limited attendance, the museum is keeping up the exhibits celebrating Maine’s 200th anniversary as a state and Ogunquit’s 40th anniversary as an independent town. For Maine, the curator created an exhibit celebrating some of the state’s illustrious, history-making residents over the 200 years. For Ogunquit, a timeline

has been constructed to illustrate how it started as a grant from Sir Ferdinando Gorges to his cousin Thomas Gorges in 1641, and continued up until the village separated from the town of Wells in 1980. In the keeping room is a new presentation showcasing artist Mark H. Dennis during the 25 years he lived in Perkins Cove. Norman West was his mentor and the subject of a couple of the paintings, as is Isabel Lewando and the beautiful cove itself. In the small borning room, a permanent collection gives prominence to a pair of Ogunquit’s
famous teahouses – The Dan Sing Fan and The Whistling Oyster. The ell houses the Perkins Cove collection, including a fish shack replica and the artifacts typically found in the fishermen’s shacks of old, as well as local paintings and photographs. The museum also houses the extensive Charles Littlefield Seaman Library, historical information on Maine families and towns, and a reproduction of the famous Ogunquit dory. Quilt Webinar AUGUSTA Maine State Museum curator of history and decorative arts, Laurie LaBar, will share insights and striking images of Maine quilts during a webinar on June 10 at 6:30 p.m. It marks the official launch of her new book, “Maine Quilts: 250 Years of Comfort and Community”. The book, co-published by the Maine State Museum and Down East Books, is the first to take a comprehensive look at Maine quilts and quilters. For LaBar, it is the culmination of over a decade of research. The result is a lavishly illustrated study, full of stories, inspiration, and artistry. “As the book’s title implies, comfort is central to Maine quilts because of the physical comfort of having something over you during cold winters,” commented LaBar. “But there is also an emotional comfort to a quilt because someone you love may have made it for you. At the same time, community is important because quilts, especially album or friendship quilts, hold so many stories about the communities of women who made them.” Sponsored by the Maine State Museum and the Friends of the Maine State Museum, the webinar is free of charge. To register, visit www.mainestatemuseum. org/book-launch-laurie-labar/ or call 207-287-2301.

Help for Medications Becomes Law AUGUSTA On Tuesday, May 25, a bill from Senator Ned Claxton, D-Auburn, was signed into law by Governor Mills. The bill, LD 523, “An Act Regarding Prior Authorizations for Prescription Drugs,” will help Mainers access prescription medications with less hassle. “More often than not, prior authorizations slow down the process of a patient getting their prescriptions and get in the way of good medicine,” said Senator Claxton. “Not only is the process frustrating, but it can actually lead to folks not getting a medication that was prescribed to them. This law will require real-time communication between the insur-
Health Insurance Improvements for Firefighters AUGUSTA Governor Mills recently signed into law a bill sponsored by Senator Nate Libby, D-Lewiston, to help retired firefighters and law enforcement officers. As an emergency measure, LD 37, “An Act To Amend the Laws Concerning the Retired County and Municipal Law Enforcement Officers and Municipal Firefighters Health Insurance Program,” is now in effect. “Standing up for our first responders is an issue people from across the political spectrum can agree on. As a legislator, I know how important it is to support the hardworking law enforcement officers and firefighters who protect our communities, both during their time of service and after they retire,” said Senator Libby. LD 37 improves health insurance plans for retired county and municipal law enforcement officers and municipal firefighters, including expanding the open enrollment period. In the 129th Legislature, Sen. Libby sponsored LD 1674, “An Act To Amend the Laws Concerning the Retired County and Municipal Law Enforcement Officers and Municipal Firefighters Health Insurance Program,” which was signed into law in 2019 and made amendments to ensure earned benefits are accrued and disbursed fairly. The Maine Association of Police and Professional Firefighters of Maine both submitted testimony supporting LD 37.
ance carrier and your health care provider, so we can reduce the annoyance that comes with getting medications and improve outcomes for patients. I thank Governor Mills for signing this important bill into law.” LD 523 requires an insurance carrier to adopt at least one electronic tool for real-time communication between them and a health care provider. By providing prescribers with real-time feedback on whether a prior authorization is needed and if a request has been approved, patients will get their medications more quickly and with less hassle, and providers will know whether their prior authorization was approved or not. Studies have shown that about a third of patients don’t return to pick up their medication when there is a delay in filling a prescription. The law will take effect 90 days after the Legislature adjourns.

COVID-19 Vaccine and Mammograms – Schedule Now or Later? YORK Recent media coverage regarding the efficacy of a mammogram, following administration of a COVID-19 vaccine, has caused concern among women planning for this annual test. Reports have
indicated that side effects from the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine may include swollen and tender lymph nodes. These were found in 11.6% of patients following the first dose, and 16% of patients after the second dose of the Moderna vaccine; lower

amounts were detected following the Pfizer vaccine. “This does not mean that you should cancel your mammogram,” says Breast Radiologist, Dr. Amanda Lewis, of York Hospital. “The vaccine that prevents COVID-19 can cause swollen lymph nodes under the arm in which the shot was given; and because your lymph nodes are integral to the body’s immune response, the swelling is a sign that your body is responding to the vaccine and building up de-
fenses against the corona virus. These lymph nodes, if reactive and enlarged, may be imaged on your mammogram. Concerns arise because breast cancer can also cause enlargement of these lymph nodes if cancer cells spread to the lymph nodes.” Dr. Lewis and the York Hospital Breast Care Team continue to recommend that patients have routine mammography without delay in care. However, they also advise letting their radiologist know the date of your

FINANCE & CAREER Bob Winn Scholarship at Wells High School WELLS The Ogunquit Residents Alliance will be honoring a home-town hero, Select Board Member Bob Winn, by establishing the Bob Winn Scholarship at Wells High School to award two graduating seniors $1,000 each. Winn grew up in Ogunquit, attended the Ogunquit Village School, and graduated from Wells High School. After college, he returned to his beloved state as a teacher and running coach. Bob inspired students with his love of running and led teams to several state championships. He himself is a national elite runner and was inducted into the Maine Running Hall of Fame. However, it’s never been about
awards or accolades for him. Students’ lives, their peace, their happiness, their success in and outside of school is what makes him tick. As importantly, his work ethic, character and service to his community have been paramount. As a Select Board member for nearly a decade, Bob
has given his time and energy to Ogunquit. He has served with honor and integrity. The two scholarships will be awarded through Wells High School. Generally, the kids apply for any of the scholarships by the end of March. This year it was Friday, March 26. The team at Wells High will make

She’s blending in well, but she misses her old life with the person who loved her. Lily has been through a very painful life change, and we want to fix her heartache and loneliness quickly. She’s very sweet and affectionate and loves to be held, patted, and fussed over. She is healthy and needs no special diet or medication. Lily doesn’t do well with dogs, isn’t all that receptive to other kitties, and would prefer being the “only kitty.”
Lily purrs all the time. When she gets purring very hard, she’s been known to drool! Find out more about Lily by calling Leonore at 207-985-3227 or the shelter at 207-646-1611. The Safe Haven shelter at 1420 Post Road, is looking for receptionists so we can reopen to the public (currently by appointment only). We need a few cat-loving volunteers who can answer the phone, greet visitors, help with household chores, and be a welcoming face in our lobby. We also need cat care volunteers on Sunday mornings, and Thursday and Saturday evenings. And we need Sunday cashiers and help
in pricing and receiving. Volunteer applications are online at www.safehavenhumanesociety or call 207-646-1611.

...GUARD from page 2 officer in charge for the Maine State Honor Guard of the Air National Guard. The Maine National Guard formally began its military funeral honors program, also referred to as honor guard, in 2004 and has collectively provided more than 20,000 services between the Army and Air Guard teams. About one in ten adults in the state have served in the military, making Maine one of the highest veteran populations per capita. The Army Guard has ten members who are assigned to perform these duties full time, with another ten who provide the service as needed. The Air Guard has two staff assigned full time, with about thirty trained volunteers available. The requests can be for services anywhere within the state, and members know that weekends, especially during the summer, will be spent performing this duty. When the teams are not taking part in a funeral, they are practicing every detail of the service. From the team’s movement into position, the execution of various commands, the playing of taps, the volley of the rifles, and the folding and presentation of the U.S. flag, each member has spent hours rehearsing. Both the Army and Air Guard have members who participated in formal training to serve as trainers for their teams in Maine.

We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief.
AWNINGS, WINDOWS & GUTTERS
Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

Free Fishing Weekend!
STATEWIDE On Saturday, June 5 and Sunday, June 6, any person may fish in Maine without a license (except those whose license has been suspended or revoked!). All other laws and regulations apply on these days. For more information go to www.maine.gov/ifw/ fishing-boating/fishing/fishingresources/index.html.
~ Sports & Outdoors ~ Camping in Bear Country STATEWIDE Maine is home to the largest population of black bears (Ursus americanus) in the eastern United States. Black bears in Maine are most active between April 1 and November 1. While it is great to spot bears in the wild at a safe distance, you should never approach a bear, and should quietly back away and leave the area. Below are
tips to avoid bear conflicts while hiking and camping.

problem, hope you can help. I have Malwarebytes and also Emsisoft installed on my desktop. My computer freezes (needs to recover webpage) every time Emsisoft installs updates (which seems like every time I need to do something). Malwarebytes never did this. I talked to a very nice gentleman at Emsisoft and he took a lot of time to check things out on my PC. He didn’t find any problems but he did tell me that my machine was just slow. When I bought this Dell all-in-one about four years ago, I did go by your guidelines. So would this problem be caused by my server? I was paying for the fastest speed for several years, but was told it really wasn’t available in my area. So I dropped down two notches because it was getting expensive. Also, why is Emsisoft freezing my computer

Thank you, Jan Dear Jan, Thank you for your question. Let’s start with the difference between sleep and hibernate. Sleep puts your work and settings in memory and uses a small amount of power to hold them there. Hibernation puts your work and settings on your hard drive and then turns your computer all the way off. There is no power being used in hibernation mode. Other than that, there is no difference between the two. If you want to use the sleep feature, you should be able to find it in the power settings in the Control Panel. Just click on

For additional tips for avoiding Black Bears, download educational materials from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife at www. maine.gov. (Photo from of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) when Malwarebytes downloads, no freezing? Thanks for any info, Nancy – P.S. Do I also need an antivirus? Dear Nancy, Without taking a look at your computer, I can’t really tell you what is causing your problems or why. I can tell you that I have Emsisoft installed on a large number of computers that I manage and there are almost no issues with them. Since Emsisoft protects you from viruses (you don’t need another antivirus program) and malware, I would suggest that you un-install Malwarebytes and see if that fixes the problem. It might also be that after four years your computer is overdue for a good tune-up. Your local computer repair shop would be happy to do that for you.
One of the classic signs of a hard drive that is starting to fail is that it slows down your system, so you might want to get your hard drive tested and see if that is the problem. Hopefully these suggestions will point you in the right direction. Elizabeth Interested in learning more? Elizabeth has answered thousands of computer questions over the years.
