2014 Great Race to start in Ogunquit, June 21 SEACOAST The Great Race, the world’s premiere old car rally, will start at 10 a.m. in Ogunquit, on Beach Street, and will bring more than 100 antique automobiles to Maine for up to four days before the beginning of the $150,000 event. It marks the first time since its inception in 1983 the event will be in the state. The race will weave its way 2,100 miles down the Atlantic Coast to Florida over nine days and passing through 13 states before the finish at The Villages near Orlando on Sunday, June 29. The Great Race, which began 31 years ago, is not a speed race, but a time/speed/distance rally. The vehicles, each with a driver and navigator, are given precise instructions each day that detail every move down to the second. They are scored at secret check points along the way and are penalized one second for each second either early or late. As in golf, the lowest score wins. Cars start – and hopefully finish – one minute apart if all goes according to plan. The biggest part of the challenge other than staying on time and following the instructions is getting an old car to the finish line each

day, organizers say. The cars will be in the Portland area Friday, June 20, for a practice rally. Saturday morning before the start in Ogunquit, spectators will be able to visit with the participants and to look at the cars. It is common for kids to climb in the cars for a firsthand look. All Great Race stops are free to the public. The Ogun-
quit Chamber of Commerce is helping with the plans locally. Cars built prior to 1972 are eligible, with most entries having been manufactured before World War II. In the 2013 Great Race down the Mississippi River from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, a 1913 Premiere and a 1916 Hudson were the two oldest vehicles. There was also a

Ian Crocker and Isabella Bazata connect after weeks of searching.
By Joyce Amend, Staff Writer OGUNQUIT How do you make a wish come true? Look for the first star you see at night? Throw a coin in a fountain? Blow out the birthday candles? One little girl had the answer: sheer determination and tenacity. That’s exactly what worked for Isabella Bazata, a 3rd grader at Wells Elementary School, who wouldn’t give up until her wish came true. What was Isabella’s wish? ...a child who fantasized a vision, sparked by a school assignment? Isabella was assigned a classroom project by her teacher Michelle Boucher that re-

quired her to give a written and oral report on a famous Maine person. The assignment required researching the person and consisted of first writing notes, then 3 paragraphs and finally putting the information on note cards. The assignment also required a visual presentation that would support the project. Isabella is an avid swimmer, and a member of the Sanford YMCA Titans swim team, so it was no surprise that her attention turned toward Ian Crocker, a five-time Olympic medalist in swimming. Crocker’s roots were in Maine, and See WISH page 10...
