New in the Kennebunks – LAUNCH! A Maritime Festival THE KENNEBUNKS The Kennebunks will kick off summer with the first LAUNCH! A Maritime Festival, which gets underway on Friday, June 17 through June 19. Fresh local seafood, nautical history and an array of events at locations throughout Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Arundel will celebrate the community’s rich maritime history — one that continues to this day. through various anchor events and activities: from a Clam Jam at the Seafood Center of Maine with homemade clam cakes and ice cream, buoy decorating and a bouncy house for kids; to a "Chopped" style chef competition, chowder cook-off and local food truck gathering in downtown Kennebunk; to an authentic Lobster Bake with red and white checked tablecloths at the Pilot House, overlooking the Kennebunk River; to a River Lights boat parade and a VIP “Rock the Boat� adults-only shipboard after party. Throughout the three-

day festival, visitors can also run the Sailors & Sirens 5K themed road race, enjoy historic walking tours with costumed interpreters from the Brick Store Museum and White Columns (Kennebunkport Historical Society), brewery tours and tastings at the Kennebunkport Brewing Company, a craft fair on the river green and more. Puppy Leigh is a lab/golden retriever cross who will one-day know over 40 advanced commands, and be matched with a person with disabilities and will make amazing difference in the life of a person. Volunteer Puppy Raisers are critically important to the work of Canine Companions for Independence. Puppy Raisers take the pups into their home at eight weeks of age, raising them, teaching them basic commands and socialization skills. The socialization is perhaps the most

important, because the dogs need to be exposed to any and all types of surroundings. With the special yellow capes they wear, these dogs are permitted to go to many public areas that family pets are not allowed. When the dogs reach about a year and a half old, they are returned to the Canine Companions for Independence regional headquarters in New York. Special Olympics Summer Games STATEWIDE The 48th annual Special Olympics Maine State Summer Games are approaching. Over 1500 athletes, ages 8-87 have been training, planning, and now packing for this exciting event. They will represent 122 teams from Kittery to Presque Isle and will compete in a variety of Olympic Style sports at the University of Maine in Orono June 10-12. The week prior to the games, nearly 600 members of Maine Law Enforcement will be carrying the Olympic Torch, the Flame of Hope, across the entire

state. These members of Law Enforcement will be trying to raise funds for and an awareness of Special Olympics Maine. The run began in Berwick on Tues-

day, June 7 and will conclude on Friday with a Final Leg entering in to the UMO campus late afternoon. Competition will actually

begin on Thursday, June 9 at 9 a.m. with Bowling and Unified Bowling. (Unified events bring together athletes with intellectual disabilities and those without for an opportunity to compete together on the same team.) On Friday the excitement continues with more bowling, Time trials, Bocce Competitions and relays. Friday evening, June 10 always proves to be a fun-filled night with our annual Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg arriving around 4:30 p.m., an outside picnic for the athletes, our
