Robillard Wins ‘Greenlight Maine’ Collegiate Challenge ELIOT Marshwood alum and recent University of New England graduate Jillian Robillard ’20 (Marine Entrepreneurship) has won the “Greenlight Maine” Collegiate Challenge, scoring $25,000 in prize money to bolster her innovative lobster bait business, Green Bait, which aims to preserve Maine’s lobster fishing economy. Her win of the televised

pitch competition — which pits college students’ business ideas against each other for the chance to win the kickstart money — was aired on News Center Maine on Sunday, June 7. She bested two other student businesses: Easy Eats, a technology-based platform that provides dorm-door food delivery service to college students, and Ferda Farms, a sustainability focused oyster farm in Brunswick.

Green Bait is an extension of Robillard’s existing business Southern Maine Crabs, which buys crabs from fishermen along the Maine coast and sells them to wholesalers for profit. The new product is a lobster bait formula made from invasive green crabs, an insidious species that feeds on clam beds and oysters and has been linked to See GREEN page 3...

Descart added, “We have a total of 11 volunteer drivers who service the areas of Kittery, York, Eliot and Ogunquit. After COVID-19

Over the past 20 years, the program has grown to include not only York Hospital patients, but many community members at large – due to the high quality and low cost of the prepared meals. April Roberts, administrative dietary coordinator for York Hospital, oversees home meal deliveries and explained that there has been a strong and consistent increase in demand as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. “In mid-March when people started to realize they shouldn’t venture

Since the pandemic began in mid-March, Descart explained the hospital has received requests for, and has delivered, two to three times more meals to seniors in their homes than in March, April and May of last year. the decline of the soft-shell clam industry. The crabs appear in lobster traps as bycatch and, due in part to climate change, their numbers continue to rise in Maine and New England. Fishermen cannot legally return the species to the water, so they are often killed and discarded. Robillard saw the problem as an opportunity to grow her existing business while protecting the environment. To create the bait, she buys unwanted green crabs from fishermen and processes them into a proprietary bait blend. She then sells the bait back to those lobster fishermen at a reduced price. The bait is cheaper for fishermen to purchase, and it attracts the same number of lobsters as conventional bait, Robillard told the “Greenlight Maine” judges back in January. In Sunday’s Collegiate Chal-

lenge finale, she said that developing the product is one of the ways she is doing her part to make a difference at the local and global level. “Everyone has a social responsibility, and I think these fishermen are willing to try something new, especially if it’s in their benefit and if there’s an incentive,” she said. Judging the episode were Andy Nichols, CEO of Elmet Technologies; Briana Warner, CEO of Atlantic Sea Farms; and Isla Dickerson, senior vice president and director of marketing for Bangor Savings Bank. The three were particularly taken with Robillard’s product with Nichols calling her an “impressive, driven, young entrepreneur.” Dickerson was also especially impressed by the product. “I love the fact that she has taken something that has really been a blight on our oceans and turned it into something that can have a positive impact,” she said.

~ Ask The Computer Lady ~ Dear Computer Lady, Is there a way to print all my email addresses that I have in Outlook? I am afraid that I will lose them. When I used Incredimail for my emails, several years go, I could print out a copy of the names and email addresses. I can’t seem to do that using Outlook. I read your column every week. Thanks so much for any help, Juanita Dear Juanita, Not every email program has the ability to print out email addresses, but there is usually a way to work around the programming. Currently, there are three totally different email programs with the name Outlook in them. Outlook Express which came with Windows XP, but is not available in newer versions of Windows, Office Outlook which is part of the Microsoft Office suite of programs, and Outlook. com which is a free online email

service owned by Microsoft. I am not sure which Outlook you are using, so I will try to provide you with a solution that will work in any email program. First, start a new email message. In the “To:” section, click right on the word, “To” and you should see a list of your contacts. Some programs will have a box that you can click to select all your contacts, if you have that box, click on it to select all your contacts. If not, you can try the keyboard combination, “Ctrl & A” to select them all, or if you have to, you can click on each contact. Once you have all your contacts listed in the, “To:” field, click once on an address to highlight it. Press Ctrl+A to select all the addresses, then Ctrl+C to copy them all. Now, just paste (Ctrl+V) them into a document. You can use Notepad, or Word, or whatever document you prefer to use. Now that your email addresses are in a document, you can print them and/or save them for future reference. Elizabeth

Dear Computer Lady, I find your emails very interesting. My 12-year-old computer is about shot, and I am thinking of buying a Chromebook laptop. I understand they are very good. Would you mind expounding on them a little? Thanks, Barbra Dear Barbra, If you only use your computer for email and the internet, a Chromebook will be a good choice for you. You can also create and save some documents using the online Google Docs applications, but you will not be able to install and use office applications like Word. You will be able to play online games on your Chromebook, but you will not be able to install and play games like you do on a Windows PC. You can use online bookkeeping applications like Quickbooks online, or Wave, but you will not be able to install bookkeeping applications on your computer like Quickbooks. I hope this helps you decide which type of computer will work for you. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, I have a new HP Pavilion

Eat Better: Swap This for That During a time of high stress, we often comfort ourselves with food, drinks or other vices. The following can help you make smarter choices when it comes to junk food verses the taste you’re really after. Replacements for Sweets Fruit: When trying to curb a craving for sweets, try biting into fresh or frozen fruit. It’s a great source of natural sugars that won’t leave you with a sugar crash later in the day. Oddly enough, frozen is usually fresher and definitely recommended for delectable smoothie protein shakes! Yogurt: Many yogurts are great options when you find yourself reaching for ice cream. It’s a great probiotic and is a healthier alternative. Watch out for hidden ingredients, however. Some of them can be packed with hidden added sugars such as high fructose corn syrup or cane sugar. The more natural the ingredients list, the better. A better snack bar: Instead

of reaching for a candy bar, try either a RX Bar or Perfect Food Bar. It will give you the sweetness you want without all the processed sugars. More nutrient-dense graband-go snacks: Trade the chips for pre-cut veggies. Cut up a bunch of veggies all at once and store them in airtight containers. Carrots, cucumbers, peppers, and celery all make excellent crunchy snacks, and when you already have them prepared, you’re more likely to eat them! Add a little hummus dip to avoid bottomless chips

from an event like this to help ourselves and our families. For the links to join the zoom event or to register for the auction, visit http://mainegoredluncheon.heart.org. and salsa. Looking for a little more healthy fats? Swap the hummus with some homemade guacamole. Both are great and better than a dairy based dip full of empty calories. Curb that salty craving with a handful of nuts: Whether you are on the go or just looking for something salty, nut mixes can be an awesome solution. It will give you the salt you want and the good fats keep you feeling full. Just want a snack? Popcorn can be a light afternoon snack that won’t pack on the calories or leave you feeling guilty.

...VOLUNTEERS from page 1 Burke said he enjoys delivering meals – and trading jokes – with one York resident. “Maurice always comes to the door and has a great one-liner to brighten my day. Neal Sherman, a longtime volunteer driver for the Meal Delivery and Bridges Programs at York Hospital shared that “Sometimes it is the little things that matter most. A few weeks ago I was reading the newspaper online and saw that one of the couples I deliver meals to just celebrated their 60th Anniversary. I printed the article and delivered it with their meals and they were touched. When I brought a card on Mother’s Day, there was so much gratitude for my gesture. “I truly enjoy working with everyone at York Hospital and love delivering meals to seniors at their homes.” Sherman added. Kate Ford, director of volunteer services at York Hospital echoed these sentiments, “It is a pleasure working with Jorge and April in Dining and Nutrition. The volunteers who deliver meals are incredible individuals and a top notch team and the addition of Bridges Program volunteers to help expand meal delivery into South Berwick, Berwick and Wells is the icing on the cake. We are now positioned to help even more seniors during a time when they need us most”. For more information or to volunteer, contact Ford at 207-351-2224 or kford@yorkhospital.com, or visit www. yorkhospital.com/giving-back.

up here and there. We’re careful to always trap the entire family and never leave anyone behind. We love tomcats, too. They arrive so dirty and beat up but with a swagger and sassy attitude. We let them complain and pout but soon they realize they actually enjoy getting regular meals, soft beds, occasional catnip, frequent kind words, and volunteers fussing over them.

They have lived most of their lives together so we would really like them to go home as a pair. They love each other and very much enjoy playing together. While they are friendly and outgoing, they might be best in a home without young children, mainly because of their size and active play style. If you have room in your heart and home for this pair of lovable dogs, give us a call at 207-985-3244. For more details, visit www.animalwelfaresociety.org. Emergency Loan Fund designed to help eligible Kennebunk businesses with challenges due to COVID-19. Loans will be offered at up to $5,000 with a very low interest rate, with payments deferred for the first two years. The term will be five years, with half of the loan amount forgiven if certain criteria are met. “We wanted to create a program to help Kennebunk businesses with 10 or less fulltime employees meet the challenges of COVID-19,” said

Robert Georgitis, KDC president. “Most are facing extra expenses, having to retrofit businesses with plexi-glass, buy PPE, do minor construction to create outdoor spaces and more – all while trying to keep payroll covered. It’s our hope that this loan will help some of our vulnerable businesses survive and thrive.” The loan program will be administered by the Southern Maine Finance Agency, which will be the only authority to know a business’ name and per-

Museums Partner for Bicentennial Distance Challenge

KENNEBUNK The Bicentennial Distance Challenge is a virtual run, walk or bike that asks participants to travel an historic, seven-mile distance to celebrate Maine and Kennebunk’s dual Bicentennials this year, and support the Brick Store Museum and the Historical Society of Wells-Ogunquit, as well as other cultural nonprofits in Wells and Kennebunk impacted by the pandemic. The Bicentennial Distance Challenge is sponsored especially by Southern Maine Health Care, with additional support from Kennebunk Savings. The virtual race allows participants to choose their race day and their course, as long as it’s seven miles. Why seven miles? In 1820, three months after Maine became its own state, the

towns of Kennebunk and Wells split to become two separate towns. Their meetinghouses sat seven miles apart. “It’s a great opportunity to work with our neighbors at the historical society to highlight our shared history in an active way. As COVID-19 hit, this event remained one that we could carry out, as a virtual race allows for adequate distancing and health safety while encouraging our community to get outside and get to know their neighborhoods,” said Museum Director Cynthia Walker. The seven-mile distance race will feature prizes donated by local businesses, including

awards for run and bike fastest times; most creative course; and more. Participants who are walking can do the entire seven miles at once, or split up their distance over several days. Registration for the race is $35 per person, and $10 for children under 16. The race kicks off June 24 (Kennebunk’s birthday), and participants can complete their race anytime before October 17. Every participant receives a commemorative bib number to wear during their race and a cast participant medal during the Virtual Finish Line event in October. Registration is via www.runsignup.com, and can be reached at www.brickstoremuseum.org.

...UPDATES from page 2 open for parking; Beaches - Open for regular use as of June 10. Social distancing required. Towels, blankets, chairs, etc. must be spaced 6 feet apart from other beachgoing patrons. Beach umbrellas, sunshades, and low to the ground cabana-style canopies with single center poles or flexible poles, that are no larger than 4 x 4 are permitted. Pop-up canopies or tents with 4 corner poles, that are greater than 4 x 4 will not be permitted. Individual umbrellas and sunshades must have 15 feet between one another, no umbrella or sunshade may be connected to any other umbrella or sunshade (umbrella city). Must be manned, exception given for reasonable amounts of time for swimming, walking beach, etc. and can not be used to reserve

space on the beach. Set-up prohibited before 9 a.m., coinciding with Lifeguard and Beach Ambassador schedule. Lifeguards and Beach Ambassadors will be in place starting June 20. Dog beach regulations will revert to the normal rules. Dogs allowed on beach and off-leash under voice control from sunrise until 8 a.m.. Dogs allowed on beach on leash from 6 p.m. to sunrise.

Town of Ogunquit Updates

The Town of Ogunquit Select Board has opened Ogunquit beaches for swimming, sitting, sunbathing and more. Social distancing protocols per CDC and Maine CDC recommendations will require visitors to the reopening beaches to stay 6 feet apart at all times and wear a mask when social distancing is not possible. Casey Kibat, 77

ELIOT – Casey Kibat passed away peacefully at Massachusetts General Hospital on Friday, May 29, 2020 after a courageous battle with cancer. Casey was born on March 13,1943 in Detroit, MI to the late Marvin and Thelma (Bacon)

Kibat. He attended Kimball High School in Royal Oak, MI, and soon after enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1960. Casey was stationed at Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, NH, where he met his loving wife Sharon M. (Thomas) Kibat of 58 years. In June of 1976 Casey started Northeast Hydraulics Inc. “The Shop” in Kittery which is where you could find him 90% of the time in the last 44 years. Casey took so much pride in his business, which he has proudly passed down to his son and grandson. Casey was always looking to learn which explains him getting a mechanical engineering degree in 2009 at the age of 66 just for fun. If Casey wasn’t at the shop he was either watching NASCAR with an iced cold Snapple or out on the lake casting a line or two. Although above all,

Dorothy Elizabeth (Parenteau) Tanguay. Carolyn had the loveliest voice and loved to sing all the time… when cooking, at weddings, at restaurants where she waitressed, outside around the campfire, doing housekeeping, and my favorite, singing at the kitchen sink while we did dishes together. She would sing at holidays with all of us, myself, my brothers and sister, and always, always sang Patsy Cline songs. She loved to dance whether it would be tap (in her youth), jitterbug, waltz, square dance, as well as free style. Carolyn was a committed Catholic all her life and attended St. Martha’s (previously St. Monica’s) in Kennebunk and often volunteered to cook for weddings and funerals in their back kitchen. Carolyn was the head cook at the Kennebunk Elementary schools for more than 30 years. She catered with pleasure to the children who required special diets at their moms’ request. She was one of the world’s best cooks, my dad would say – and all family and friends agree – because we had home-cooked dinners every night ready by 5 p.m. sharp when my dad arrived home from work. Carolyn was predeceased by her husband Daniel Joseph Morse, Sr., married 33 years; their first son Daniel Joseph Morse, Jr., who passed as a child at two years old; her second son Brian Timothy Morse, who passed at the age of 54; second husband Bob See DIXON page 17...

Bernier-Gelinas FUNERAL HOME

Kittery, ME We are often asked by the families we serve, here at JS Pelkey & Son and Bernier Funeral Homes, why certain expressions and traditions exist in the funeral service industry. One of the most often asked questions is “Why send flowers to a memorial service or funeral, aren’t they just a waste of money?” Well nothing could be further from the truth. As my friend Todd Van Beck recently wrote in an article: Flowers are sent to funerals for several reasons. Flowers are a means of expression. It is often difficult for those mourning a death to put feelings into words. Flowers are a visual expression of love, sympathy, and respect. They are a way of lending support and sharing the burden of grief. In addition to sending flowers to the funeral, there is a growing trend to send flowers to the home of the bereaved after the service. Some people also send flowers to the church in memory of the deceased. Flowers create a background of warmth and beauty which adds to the dignity and consolation of the service. Those who have attended services where there were no flowers have noted that something was

bereaved’s feelings in the patterns of community support which are psychologically beneficial. Flowers, however, express the inexpressible – they are symbolic.

missing – that the funeral was depressing. The funeral meets the bereaved’s need for support. Death throws people into despair and depression by separating them from one who has provided love, companionship, and security. The funeral and customs provide the means by which those close to them can give their support and share their suffering. The funeral period provides for the expression of sorrow. Only through talking about the past can the bereaved person realize the extent of the relationship with the deceased, and accept the loss and suffering. Only through weeping and talking to good listeners can they release their grief and feelings of guilt and hostility. Experts in grief therapy believe that it can be expressed best through rites, rituals, and ceremonies. The ceremony deals primarily with intellectual concepts and doesn’t fully engage the

There are three points to be stressed, finally, in connection with the tradition of funeral flowers. First, the role of flowers are both symbolic and aesthetic. They add great value to the richness and meaning of the ritual. Second, flowers represent sympathy extended to the bereaved. Third, flowers are sent to both the living and the dead. They are sent to the living as comfort and as tokens of respect for the deceased. We, at the JS Pelkey & Son and the Bernier Funeral Homes, hold the value of the work our local florists do in very high regard. We always encourage the families we serve to contact a local florist directly. Certainly there are national floral outlets that can be reached with a simple Google search but, honestly, the quality of these products are often substandard. Simply click the “Send Flowers” tab on our website and you will be directed to our list of trusted florists. Please call us about any questions with which we may help.

My problem is that the zoom keeps changing in both programs. What can I do to set the zoom so that it stops changing? Carole Hi Carole, I’m guessing that your zoom is changing because you are brushing against part of the touchpad with your wrists as you type or scroll. Try covering the touchpad and see if that makes a difference. Elizabeth Dear Computer Lady, How do I remove deleted program entries from MSCONFIG’s start up menu? I found several entries of programs which I assumed were removed a while ago. How do I get rid of these entries and their check boxes from the MSCONFIG start up menu list? Bruce Dear Bruce, If you remove the program using the control panel’s “Uninstall A Program” feature, the entries should be removed from the startup list as well. If a program is removed by just deleting the files, the registry entries will not be removed. If the program was uninstalled in the control panel, but still shows up in MSCONFIG, just right-click and disable the entry. If you can’t live with the disabled entry in MSCONFIG, you will probably need to re-install the program, then uninstall it again. The only other way to remove a program entirely from MSCONFIG’s Startup list is to edit the Windows Registry, which is something I don’t recommend, since making a mistake in the Registry can result in Windows no longer working. Getting to Know Some of Our Real Estate Professionals! Marcia Giniusz | 207-752-0472 | Marcia@yorkmaine.com How long in the business of real estate, and what led you to this career? I have been in the business for 5 years and decided to get into it because it was a lifelong dream, but I did not think I could dedicate the necessary time until my kids were grown. What energizes you in real estate? People energize me – the fact that I can be a part of their dream. What advice would you give to your teenage self? I would advise my teenage self to not take everything so seriously – things work themselves out. One behavior or trait that you think most attributes to your success in real estate? I believe my success is due to my tenacity and honesty. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you and what’s a hidden talent? People don’t know that I am a polyglot and speak 5 languages. Best advice you were ever given? Work diligently and honestly and the money will follow (my Dad).

Carolyn Weller | 207-351-6717 | Carolyn@teamwunder.com How long in the business of real estate, and what led you to this career? I have been in the real estate business for 13 years, starting right before the 2008 downturn. I have always had a curiosity about the real estate industry having bought and sold our fair share of houses over the years, but it was a real estate acquaintance that planted the seed, years ago telling me that I would be good at it, and that stuck with me. The rest is history as they say. What energizes you in real estate? The joy that you see in your buyers knowing that they are moving toward something that is all their own, and assisting sellers to move on to the next chapters in their lives. It is gratifying to be a part of those sometimes life-changing journeys, knowing that you had a role in helping them navigate it all. It is important work. What advice would you give to your teenage self? Teenagers are notoriously bad at listening to advice, but I guess I would tell my younger self to not be afraid to take risks. Growing up using the safe strategy or path was always preached, but with big risk can come big reward. So I would say, step out of your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to go for the bold. One behavior or trait that you think most attributes to your success in real estate? I’m determined. If a customer or client has a particular want or need I will figure out how to make it happen.

Three words friends use to describe you? Kind, tenacious, loyal.

Dan Letellier | 207-590-1776 | danletellsells@gmail.com How long in the business of real estate, and what led you to this career? I’m currently in my 5th year. What led me to a career in real estate was the opportunity to work alongside my brother, Bob, in a career he really loves and excels at. What energizes you in real estate? The joy and excitement on the faces on my clients when they purchase their home! What advice would you give to your teenage self? Stay true to yourself and try to leave a positive impact on the world every day you can.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you and what’s a hidden talent? I am a pretty open book, so the people around me know me. Regarding my talents, I am pretty crafty. I recently returned to sewing after a long time and am now making masks to protect the people. I love and care about and have been known to dabble in crocheting, making a crocheted baby bikini to match the picture on an invitation to a baby shower without a pattern. Was it perfect? No. Did it give me great joy to have done it? Yes! Best advice you were ever given? The answer is always NO unless you ask the question. You can’t always assume that someone will say NO to an idea or thought that you may propose, so ask the question. You may be surprised at the response. That is advice that has played a crucial role in my real estate career. Three words friends use to describe you? Loyal, helpful, family-oriented.

One behavior or trait that you think most attributes to your success in real estate? I feel that I am easy to talk to so people feel comfortable working with me.

NEW LISTING!

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you and what’s a hidden talent? I sang in front of my student body with a band in high school. A hidden talent is that I’m a pretty good juggler – I’m not ready for the circus or anything, but I can juggle three of most anything. Best advice you were ever given? Someone I coached with in the past told me to “Always do what I feel in my heart is the right thing to do. As long as you can look at yourself in the mirror every morning then you’re doing good.” Three words friends use to describe you? Funny, friendly, caring.
