Bush Sr. Celebrates 90th Birthday • ••• • ••••• •••• •••••••••••••••••••• • •• ••••• ••• ••• •••••••••••••••••••••••• KENNEBUNKPORT There was a lot of red, white and blue in evidence last week as friends, admirers and supporters of President George H.W Bush celebrated his 90th birthday with a lawn party. The party, held at the First Families Museum at White Columns on Maine Street, included no less than 90 birthday cakes of all shapes and sizes, most of them decorated in the aforemen-

tioned red, white and blue. There were balloons and music, and cake, ice cream and lemonade

were served to the community. The crowd estimated at as high as 600 people attended the

party on the afternoon of the former president’s birthday and hours after he had marked the

occasion by again sky diving, with assistance, in what has become a birthday ritual. At one point a video of people dressed in the nation’s colors was made, with the singing of ‘Happy Birthday’, led by Jane Morgan, that was to be delivered to President Bush. The cakes were judged with prizes going to Sonja Midgle in the adult category, Jilian LaPoint in the youth competition, and the Kennebunk Inn in the professional division. Those aiding in the celebration included Arundel Ice Cream, Video Creations, Bentley’s, In Town Trolley, and PackGen.

Living Sustainably Now And Forever ARUNDEL The children and teachers of School Around Us (SAU) recently lived for three school days in a sustainably-sound village that was created in the woods next to the school. They ate only food they had prepared, used only energy they created, built and used an outhouse, and never entered the school building. The children were responsible for everything including set up, wood collecting, tending the fire, preparing the food, maintaining warm water, keeping the site

clean, and simply having fun. As a culminating event, students hosted a ‘sustainability unit share’ in which they invited their family and friends to experience the sustainable village. The children demonstrated the skills they learned, and shared information about the various areas of study in which they focused, such as: questions like “how far does my food travel and how sustainable is it?” and “how can we make changes to live in a more sustainable way?”, and processes like fermentation, aquaponics, cob oven building, hydraulic ram pump building, food preservation, using alternative cooking methods such as solar ovens and rocket stoves. Children at School Around Us had a very unique and authentic learning experience. The school’s educational philosophy is based on eight basic skills

which are encouraged in the child as part of a holistic learning process. This sustainable theme touched on all of these skills: environmental harmony, logical thinking, body knowledge, self knowledge, practical life skills, citizenship, creative arts, and communication. Some of the specific knowledge gained and practiced included gardening, preserving food, building and using tools, survival skills, problem solving, working in a team, creating and using different types of sustainable energy, reflecting on why living sustainably is important and recognizing our responsibilities to live sustainably. There were three groups that focused on the theme – food, energy and shelters. The shelter group centered

Strawberry Festival to be Held June 28 SOUTH BERWICK The South Berwick Strawberry Festival officially kicks off summer for this quaint, southern Maine town. This is a significant year for the Town of South Berwick since it was incorporated 200 years ago. To commemorate our 200th year birth, this year’s T-shirt has featured a scene of the Town from a bygone era. All over town one can see the bright red, white, and green strawberry flags that not only line the main streets, but can also be seen flying from many houses. The day is filled with food, entertainment, games, and crafts. For thirty-nine consecutive years, hundreds of volunteers from South Berwick, have come together for a South Berwick tradition. As always, official Festi-

val activities will take place only on the grounds of Central School, on Main Street, in the center of town. A stop at the Strawberry Festival Information Booth is a must to find out more about the day’s schedule for the entertainers, crafters, as well as the various activities throughout the fair grounds. At the information booth you can also purchase the strawberry festival t-shirts. Preparation of the strawberries start on Friday, the morning before the Festival at the Community Center, where over a hundred and fifty volunteers get together for a good old fashioned social to hull, slice, and sugar the berries. Preserving Transportation From A Bygone Era

has created an apprenticeship program to teach students real world life skills and foster community involvement. This past semester apprentices Nick Buzzell and Caleb Long, students at The New School in Kennebunk, took part in working on the res-

toration and preservation of trolley cars in the Museum’s Town House Restoration Shop. Donald Curry, Restoration Project Manager, found an innocuous chain hanging down from the underframe of a trolley car that was taken out of service, had all the “truck” assembly removed (that is the wheels, motor, and undercarriage of a trolley) and made into a diner that led Curry on a quest to discover the purpose of the chain. After extensive research, looking at old photographs and trolley blueprints, he discovered that the “chain” was part of what was once a track scraper. The track scraper was attached under the front of the trolley to keep the trolley tracks free of debris, leaves, mud and snow

so the trolleys could keep running. Because of the harsh New England winters and ice-melting salt, the track scrapers had rusted away to practically nothing except for the bit of chain. The apprentice students from The New School, with the assistance of Curry, fabricated the pieces needed to recreate four track scrapers. The New School is proud of Nick and Caleb who had a hand in bringing these two magnificent trolleys back to a new life as a working car complete with the track scraper. Also, tree cutting safety, stripping bark and using draw blades, sawing techniques, lashing, water filtration, making activated charcoal water filters using recycled bottles and building projects; wood tent, table, teepee setup, fire pit and cooking tripod. The energy group explored renewable and nonrenewable energy sources, how a solar panel works, how a power plant creates energy (coal, water, and wind). They discussed how electrons are released from atoms in the process of creating energy, and about what energy is as it relates to power and heat sources. The food group focused on local foods and sustainable (circular) food production versus commercial production (linear). They planned and planted gardens, turned compost, discussed what is local versus not local in Maine, planned the menu for the group and used many types of food preservation techniques for storing. This sustainability unit showed the students how the daily choices we make can impact the entire world. Through their experience in the sustainable village, the students practiced what they learned and gained a deeper understanding of what is possible. They reflected daily in journal writing about their own impact on the world, and the role in which they play in the future of the planet. Commemorating Thirty Years of Spacewatch Observations of Small Bodies in the Solar System

YORK Many of us gaze at the night sky and wonder about what we see. But only a few dedicate their professional lives to observing space, identifying asteroids and comets, and understanding what impact these discoveries might have for us on earth. One who is doing this work is Terrence Bressi, an electronics technician, computer programmer, engineer and observer with the Spacewatch Project. For 30 years the Spacewatch Project, centered at the University of Arizona’s Lunar & Planetary Lab in Southern Arizona, has been surveying the night sky for asteroids and comets. Spacewatch operates two telescopes at the Kitt Peak National Observa-

tory twenty four nights a month, twelve months a year. During its years of operation, Spacewatch has observed hundreds of thousands of asteroids and discovered tens of thousands. Of those discoveries, nearly one thousand are considered near Earth asteroids and approximately one hundred of those are categorized as potentially hazardous. On June 24, at 7 p.m., York Public Library welcomes Bressi for a presentation that will highlight Spacewatch’s contributions to the astronomical community in its thirty year history, the equipment & methods Spacewatch uses to detect asteroids and comets in the solar system and the dangers posed to the planet by potentially hazardous

He attended the University of Alaska in Anchorage, AK from 1991-1992 and graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ with a BS in Physics & Astronomy in 1997. Bressi served from 19861991 in the United States Coast Guard as Quartermaster and Marine Science Technician. He has been working at the Spacewatch Project since 1993. the Spencer-Goodwin house and tavern. Excavation exposed a stone-walled cellar that measured roughly 13 by 13 feet. This structure was either a continuation of the Spencer-Goodwin home or an outbuilding. The trash found inside the cellar indicated the building was abandoned sometime between. 1760 and c. 1778, possibly when General Ichabod Goodwin took over ownership of the farmstead, home, and tavern soon after his father’s death in 1778. The occupants of the Spencer-Goodwin home used the abandoned southern cellar of the homestead as a convenient dump for kitchen waste and household trash. Most of the cultural material found was used by the family

of Captain Ichabod Goodwin and friends and strangers while eating, drinking, and smoking in the home and tavern of the Goodwin’s. The field school is open to upper level high school and college students seeking hands-on experience in historical archaeology, teachers in need of recertification credits, or history buffs interested in exploring an area with a rich colonial history. port Conservation Trust, Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation, Maine Island Trails Association and local lobstermen. The team scoured Goat Island, Trott’s Island, Green Island, Stage Island, Vaughn’s Island and the shores of Goose Rocks Beach for derelict fishing gear, winter storm debris and other rubbish. Skiffs, lobster boats and pickup trucks were loaded and brought to the pier in Cape Porpoise where a dumpster was waiting. Allen Daggett of Cape Porpoise Lobster Company provided a tractor and Choo, the operator, to transport debris from the boats to the dumpster. The Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation (GOMLF) collaborates with groups along the coast to coordinate cleanup days such as this one known as ‘Gear Grab’. “At most cleanups we need a backhoe to crush traps so we can fit them all into a Broadway World Award for Best Costume Design for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and a Broadway World nomination for West Side Story. You can tell the Trust is taking good care of their islands.” A 40 yard dumpster was on site for traps and a 10 yard dumpster was there for other debris. Both were removed from the pier the day after the cleanup and will be weighed to determine exactly how many tons of debris were removed from our shores. After hours at sea and working on the beach, volunteers were treated to a delicious bagged lunches and cold drinks from Cape Porpoise Kitchen. CPK delivered lunch straight to the pier to greet the hard working crew. The clean-up was also supported by the Kennebunkport Resort Collection. The Kennebunkport Conservation Trust holdings include twelve harbor islands and maintains them with the help of the volunteers at KCT Island Stewards. The islands vary in size, topography and use including four with primitive campsites, Goat Island Lighthouse, historic forts, important flora and fauna, and wildlife habitat. “We consider this a victory,” said Tom Bradbury, Executive Director of the Trust. If you’re going on vacation for a week or so, you may need to take some steps to safeguard your home: stopping your mail and newspaper, putting on a timer to turn on lights, alerting your neighbors that you’ll be out of town, and so on. But while it’s important to secure your home today, you will also want to help ensure it will be there for your family in the future, should anything happen to you. That’s why you’ll want to maintain adequate life and disability insurance. Know your route. If you are driving to your vacation destination, you will want to plan your route beforehand, so that you can avoid time-consuming delays and detours. And to reach your financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you will also want to chart your course –by creating an investment strategy that is designed to help you work towards those goals based on your specific risk tolerance,

BUSINESS & FINANCE Real Estate Industry Rises in Maine

The real estate sector, a leading driver of Maine’s economy, rose 2.4% over last year according to the latest data from the Maine Real Estate & Develop-

ment Association (MEREDA). In its semi-annual report on the state of Maine’s real estate industry, the MEREDA Index, increased to 78. The increase in the Index is attributed to the overall

Keep enough gas in the tank. As you set out on a road trip, you need a full tank of gas in your car, and you’ll have to keep refueling along the way. And to “go the distance” in pursuing your financial goals, you will need to have sufficient “fuel” in the form of investments with reasonable growth potential. Without a reasonable amount of growth-oriented vehicles in your portfolio, you could lose ground to inflation and potentially fall short of your objectives — so, over time you may need to “refuel” by reviewing your portfolio and rebalancing if necessary. Protect yourself from getting burned. If your vacation plans include a stay at the beach, you’ll need to protect yourself and your family from the hot sun - so make sure you’re all using sunscreen. When you invest, you can also get “burned” if you are not careful -especially if you are inclined to chase after “hot” investments. By the

time you hear about these socalled sizzlers, they may already be cooling off, and, even more importantly, they just might not be appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance. Instead of becoming a “heat-seeking” investor, focus your efforts on building a diversified array of quality investments appropriate for your needs. If you only own one type of financial asset, and a downturn hits that asset class, your portfolio could take a big hit. But by diversifying your holdings, you can help reduce the effects of volatility. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss. As we’ve seen, some of the same principles that apply to creating a vacation may also be applicable to your investing habits. So, put these principles to work to enjoy a pleasant vacation - and a potentially rewarding investment experience. increase in the real estate industry—specifically residential home sales, commercial transactions, occupancy rates and new construction jobs. This is the second consecutive increase in the Index since its inception. “This third release of the MEREDA Index shows signs of an improving real estate economy for the State,” said Drew Sigfridson, President of MEREDA and Managing Director with CBRE | The Boulos Company. “With the health of the economy directly tied to our industry we can be optimistic about the future and that we’ve turned the corner.” The data shows that the residential components continue to provide the major impetus to

growth over the past year with a 7% increase. The commercial market showed a slight decline of 1%, with construction employment up slightly, 0.5%. The MEREDA Index provides insight into what’s fueling real estate growth, predicts future trends and, most importantly, demonstrates the correlation between Maine’s commercial real estate market and the overall strength of the economy. The biannual MEREDA Index is a composite of nine measures reflecting both new development and transactions involving existing properties and covers both the commercial and residential

markets statewide. MEREDA is a nonprofit whose members banded together in 1985 to present the views of the state’s real estate industry to lawmakers in Augusta. Today, MEREDA’s more than 280 member firms are primarily from the commercial real estate industry and employ thousands of Maine citizens and drive a huge percentage of Maine’s economic activity. The organization aims to promote fair, responsible development and ownership of real estate throughout Maine. For more about MEREDA, visit www.mereda.org.

Parents and kids in Maine and New Hampshire can also look forward to an additional side option for Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals starting July 4: Go-GURT® Low-Fat Strawberry Yogurt . This Go-GURT Low-Fat Strawberry Yogurt is made exclusively for McDonald’s, contains 50 calories, has 25 percent less sugar than the leading kid’s low-fat yogurt* and is made with natural flavor. Guests now have more options for sides in kids’ meals – they can choose either Go-GURT Low-Fat Strawberry Yogurt or apple slices, or choose both together as their sides in place of a kid-size fry. These new additions are the latest examples of McDonald’s USA’s ongoing dedication to children’s nutrition and well-being as

Go-GURT Low-Fat Strawberry Yogurt, which delivers about one quarter cup of lowfat dairy and is a good source of calcium and vitamin D, provides another balanced choice for kids, along with apple slices, 1% low-fat white milk, fat-free chocolate milk and 100% apple juice beverage options. This latest offering supports McDonald’s partnership with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, an organization founded by the American Heart Association and Clinton Foundation to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity and empower kids to develop lifelong, healthy habits. Health & Fitness Pedestrian Safety a Concern to AARP The matter of pedestrian safety usually takes a backseat to other public policy issues, but AARP finds that it is a matter of great concern for older adults in Maine. It’s no wonder older Mainers are concerned with their safety when out on the roads; people aged 65 and older make up 15 percent of Maine, but they were 35 percent of pedestrian fatalities across the state between 2003 and 2010. As an older adult living in Maine, I do not want to become another number in the count of pedestrian fatalities. A recent report from Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets

Coalition in collaboration with AARP noted that “older adults face more risks as pedestrians because they may be less likely to react quickly to an oncoming vehicle” and they are “less likely to recover from a serious collision.” This should be of particular concern for the state of Maine because we have the oldest population in the nation. The path to greater pedestrian safety is found at the local, state, and federal level. Locally, people can document roads and crossings they find dangerous and insist that public officials respond. On the state level, officials can make sure pedestrian safety is built into a project from the start. Congress can help by

passing the Safe Streets Act as part of the renewal of the federal transportation law, requiring all states and local planning organizations to adopt safe streets poli-

cies for federally funded projects within two years. Let’s give pedestrian safety the visibility and strong support it deserves. Submitted by AARP

Author Monica Wood Speaks in Support of Center for Grieving Children WELLS – Award-winning author Monica Wood says she was moved to “tears of joy” during a recent visit to the Center for Grieving Children’s home in Portland. She will help raise support for the Center’s work by talking about her writing and signing books the evening of Thursday, June 26 at the Coastal House in Wells. For children, teens, and families confronting loss, change, and grief when someone close to them dies or is seriously ill, the Center is an oasis of loving support at its service sites in Portland and Sanford. Touring the Center’s Portland site earlier this year, Wood learned how Center staff and volunteers are attempting to meet growing demand for grief support. “What a miracle that such a place exists: a refuge filled with warm, responsive people whose mission is to help broken-hearted souls find their way back to joy.” Wood is the author of several books based in Maine, where she is a lifelong resident. Her recent, award-winning and best-selling memoir, ‘When We Were the Kennedys’, is the story of her father’s death and family’s life in Mexico, Maine, when she and her younger sisters were children. Losses in the book are many, primarily the shattering loss of Wood’s father, but also the loss of a manufacturing-based economy and accompanying way of life in Mexico and other towns across Maine. Guests at the June 26 event will hear about the 27-year-old Center’s newly expanded service to families from York County. They will learn how to volunteer for the Center as well as access its edu...HAPPY from page 16 choices in keeping with healthy, balanced lifestyles. cation and training for schools and workplaces. “We are honored that Monica is helping the Center raise awareness and support,” said Anne Lynch, executive director of the Center. “She has an especially compassionate grasp of our mission and deep empathy for grieving children.” Offered free to families, age-specific peer support groups for children, teens, and adults are available weekly in Portland and Sanford, thanks to the Center’s small group of staff members and more than 100 dedicated community volunteers trained as group facilitators. Volunteers also assist the Center’s office and events, and help raise awareness of and financial support for the Center’s services. In addition to grief support groups for children and families, the Center brings grief-related training and crisis support to schools, workplaces, and other organizations, including more than 40 sites in York and Cumberland counties last year. Tickets are $25 per person. More information is available by calling the Center at 207-7755216 or visiting cgcmaine.org.

~ Where To Dine ~

At Wine-Focused Restaurants, Embracing the Unknown “Representing real people who make real wine has always been very important to me,” explained Danny Fisher, the general manager and beverage director of Ripple, a wine-focused restaurant in Washington, D.C. “When you’re drinking wine -- or any kind of beverage, really -- you want to know that someone has put time and effort into it. It shouldn’t be mass produced, toyed with, or manipulated.” Fisher and I were chatting about the wisdom -- or foolishness -- of loading up a restaurant wine list with smallproduction, unfamiliar offerings. Sure, Americans have fallen for wine. We surpassed France as the world’s largest wine-consuming nation in 2010 and have been drinking more each year. But consumers still feel most comfortable

with major grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Sauvignon Blanc. And most stick with easily recognized brands, like Duckhorn, Kendall-Jackson, and Chateau Ste. Michelle. In restaurants and wine bars across the country, however, a growing number of courageous sommeliers are eschewing these obvious choices and gently guiding patrons outside their comfort zones. These efforts are having an impact. Thanks in no small part to people like Fisher, Americans are beginning to embrace the unknown. Consider Ripple’s by-theglass list. It’s home to 40 different wines, including an unusual blend of Vermentino and Grenache Blanc from maverick California vintner Steve Edmunds; an orange wine from Channing Daughters on Long Island; and a Teroldego from superstar Italian

winemaker Elisabetta Foradori. “From the beginning, one of our biggest things was that we wanted people to be able to taste different wines -- and that’s why we have so many by the glass,” Fisher explained. “It’s so our customers can explore what different wines taste like with foods. You can do half glasses if you want; it’s all about tasting and seeing what you like and maybe discovering something new.” The focus on food is echoed by David McCarus, the proprietor of a boutique wine distribution agency in South Carolina. While the general manager and beverage director of FIG, an award-winning restaurant in Charleston, he focused on the interaction of wine with food and the role wine should play at the table. And he saw how eager consumers were to learn. When McCarus moved to Charleston from San Francisco in 2012, he wasn’t sure he would find a receptive clientele. “I didn’t know if there was an appetite in town,” he explained. “But I had a strong enough belief that people would understand the wine program if it made the food taste better. Consumers might not know what they’re looking for. They might not really know what they want. But if the wine and food can combine into this organic dance -- and it makes sense while it’s happening -- people will be comfortable. And people will come back.” McCarus saw his patrons come back again and again. A successful wine program satisfies virtually every customer, of course, so McCarus made sure to always have something for everyone, even if it was obscure and didn’t match the exact request.

“My point was always, ‘why don’t we try this?’” he continued. “So If someone comes in and asks for a glass of Pinot Grigio, we can say, ‘no, we don’t have a glass of Pinot Grigio, but we have this beautiful Erbaluce from Piedmont made by this great producer and it’s really delicious and it will be really good with your fish.” What McCarus and Fisher have done isn’t unique. Nationwide, more and more sommeliers are showcasing smallproduction, interesting wines -- and providing opportunities

for people to try things that aren’t available at the local supermarket. They’re acting as educators, eager to share their palates and preferences with their customers. The wine world is vast. And thanks to this work, Americans are beginning to make all sorts of discoveries. David White is the founder and editor of Terroirist. com, which was named “Best Overall Wine Blog” at the 2013 Wine Blog Awards. His columns are housed at Grape Collective.

WHS Band Receives Awards At Music Festival

WELLS – During the first week in May, the Wells High School Band and Color Guard attended ‘Music in the Parks’, a band competition in Williamsburg, Virginia. From their performances, the WHS Parade Band received 1st place in competition while the Concert and Jazz bands placed 4th and 2nd place respectively. And, for the third time, the WHS Band received the prestigious Esprit de Corps trophy, an award given to just one of the

attending bands determined to have displayed the best behavior, attitude, cooperation and sportsmanship during performances and down time. “These Band & Color Guard members always conduct themselves in a manner worthy of receiving the Esprit de Corps Award,” said WHS Band Director Larry Downing. “It’s just more rewarding when they actually receive the award! They performed well, they were well behaved, and they represented the communities of Wells & Ogun-

quit in an exemplary manner. All of us, staff & chaperones, were honored to travel with these students.” Downing has taken the WHS Band to this festival every third year since 1990. The 61 students and 13 adults (staff and chaperones) arrived back at WHS on May 4th at 10 p.m. to a congratulatory crowd of parents. Each year, a Music in the Parks competition takes place in a variety of locations throughout See MUSIC page 26...

KENNEBUNK BEACH – Registration is now open for the 104th season of the Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association (KBIA). Again this summer, KBIA will offer eight weeks of summer recreational and enrichment classes for ages 3 to 17, starting June 23.

KBIA will again waive the membership fee for all Week 1 participants (June 23-27) as a way for first-time families to try out KBIA with no commitment. The nonprofit summer camp offers swimming, sailing, surfing, standup paddleboarding, kayaking, diving, golf,

tennis, drama, arts and crafts, and woodworking, among its 50plus course offerings. Other popular options include counselor-intraining classes, marine biology, reading, pottery and sculpture, and beach games. In 2014, KBIA will offer 14 scholarships to local children. In its final year of KBIA’s 100th Anniversary Capital Campaign,

The boosters raise money from sponsoring turkey suppers at St. Mary’s Church in Wells, candle sales through Yankee Candle Company, collecting returnable bottles, an annual craft sale, and receiving corporate donations.

Downing wishes to express his gratitude for assistance with the trip to Williamsburg and performances at Music in the Parks to Percussion Instructor Paul Bell, Color Guard Coach Bailey Smith, volunteer percussion instructor Jeff Smith and volunteer color guard coaches Deb Lareau, Dianah Shelley, and Amy Cashman.

its Board of Directors is focusing on growing scholarships. Now through September, KBIA supporters will match every $2 given toward scholarships with a $1 donation. For information on either opportunity, email Executive Director Martin Lodish at mlodish@kbia.net.

FUNERAL HOME Somersworth, NH

Tribute To Marty Fitzgerald: A Dedicated Ogunquit Businessman OGUNQUIT We first came to Oqunquit in the summer of 1961. It was just a day trip but we didn’t expect to find such a beautiful place. Our family continued to enjoy Ogunquit over the next few years. Then in 1977 Leon and Lillian Perkins suggested that Marty purchase ‘Treetops’ on Shore Road. Marty told me it was a handyman’s dream and it certainly was. During the winters of 1977 and 1978 we renovated it. We had that wonderful cottage for 18 years. In 1980 Leon told Marty he was no longer going to use his lobster shack in Perkins Cove, and if Marty wanted to renovate it for a candy shop he could. Of course, we did! In June we opened Perkins Cove Candies which remained in that location for five years. Leon and Lillian told us we should buy the building that we are presently in. The candy store has started its 35th season run by our children.

Marty wisely bought the trademark for the Whistling Oyster Shop in 1990. When he retired in 1993, he fulfilled his dream of creating a beautiful shop. Marty met Alice Sturzinger who previously sold jewelry and Murano Glass to the original Whistling Oyster. He incorporated her items with an extensive canvas collection, art, music boxes and other magnificent jewelry pieces. In 1987, Marty headed a group of interested people and started ‘Christmas By the Sea’. It remains the highlight of the holiday season to this day. Marty enjoyed gardening and kept the entrance to Perkins Cove planted with beautiful flowers. He also included many attractive floral displays around his shops. He had a brief respite in winter by going to his other love, Sanibel Island, Florida from 2000 to 2008. He loved biking, boating and was a member of the local bike club. Marty was a people person who always enjoyed animated conversations with everyone. Very often he was accompanied by his dog, Kerry. Family and friends will always remember his favorite saying: “While you live, live in clover, for when you’re dead, you’re dead all over.” Greatly missed by Fay, his wife of 53 years, Children, Michael, Jeffrey, Amy and Erin.

SPORTS Fun Ways To Exercise Outdoors Abundant sunshine, higher temperatures and longer days make spring the perfect time to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. Local parks may offer a slew of outdoor recreational activities to members of the community each spring, and there are bound to be a few seasonal offerings that focus on outdoor fitness. Taking your workout outdoors is a great way to enjoy pleasant weather and stay fit at the same time. In addition to exercise routines done at the gym, explore the following energizing outdoor activities to burn calories and soak up some springtime sun at the same time. Hiking A nearby park or wildlife preserve that features walking trails is a good place to begin an outdoor workout. Some parks build exercise stations into their hiking paths, enabling visitors to vary their workouts along the

way. Signs may also point out particular exercises that can be done during the hike, such as lunges or squats. Hiking is a good cardiovascular workout that is particularly beneficial when done on varied terrain. Mixing uphill and downhill portions of the trail with level ones will work the various muscles in the legs and also provide greater resistance to get the heart pumping. Hiking yoga is a new fitness trend that melds the classic poses of yoga with the cardiovascular workout of hiking. Hikers can break up their workouts at various points by getting into yoga poses. By doing so, it’s possible to burn twice the amount of calories one would in a standard yoga session. There’s also the added benefit of being outdoors, which can boost your mood. Outdoor sports Rev up the heart and cardio-

vascular system with sports you can play in the great outdoors. Eschew indoor racquetball for a game on an outdoor court. It’s easy to break a sweat and enjoy a good workout when a game of hoops is taken outdoors. Many parks include basketball courts where a few players can square off against one another. Pickup football or baseball is another way to enjoy physical activity outdoors, especially for those who may not be gym hounds. Both sports provide a cardiovascular workout while building muscle. When players are engrossed in the game, they may not realize they’re having fun and getting fit at the same time. Cycling Major cities across the United States, including New York, Denver, Washington, D.C. and Minneapolis, now boast

bike-sharing programs. Calories burned while biking vary depending on the length and intensity of a ride, but cycling is often great exercise. Cycling is not only for city streets. Explore the various “rails to trails” programs that crisscross the country. Defunct railway lines have been turned into walking and biking paths. Some hug coastal areas and feature impressive views. Especially adventurous riders can hop on a mountain bike and take to the hills. Jungle Gym & Parks Workout Use items in the park to tailor a complete workout. Park benches can serve as a workout bench where athletes can do push-ups, triceps dips and step-up exercises. Stretch on a jungle gym or use monkey bars to fit in some pull-ups. Some parks have their own fitness zones with exercise

equipment built into the design. Hop onto a rowing machine or a hydraulic-based elliptical free of cost. Beach Bounty The beach is not just for relaxing and catching some sun. Beaches can be a great place to get a good workout as well. Swimming in the ocean against the tug of the tide and waves is quite a task. The buoyancy of the water will prevent strain on your joints, but the resistance of the water will work your muscles harder than if you were swimming in a pool. Running or walking in sand is tougher than doing the same activities on a packed surface. The sand offers more resistance, which will tire out your legs and provide a greater cardiovascular benefit. Locally-Grown Ornamental Grasses Spring Up CAPE NEDDICK With increasing consumer interest in low-maintenance and environmentally-friendly landscaping, ornamental grasses are more popular than ever. Hutchins House OG, based in Cape Neddick, ME, grows more than 20 varieties of ornamental grasses and provides expertise to help home gardeners and landscapers make the most of these captivating plants. On Saturday, June 21, Hutchins House OG will hold an Open Field and Sale Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the old Hutchins Farm at 9 Hutchins Lane in Cape Neddick. “We’ve carefully selected varieties of ornamental grasses that combine pleasing form and

texture with Zone 5 hardiness,” said Heidi Lumia, president of Hutchins House OG. “One of the benefits of buying from a local grower is the knowledge we can pass on to our customers. People have a lot of questions about how to incorporate grasses into their gardens. They seem to enjoy walking the property and seeing different grasses growing in the field and garden.” Hutchins House OG grasses spend at least two winters in the ground before being sold. This practice ensures their local hardiness and allows them to grow to a larger size than the potted grasses found at most retailers. Once they are established, ornamental grasses typically do not require supplemen-

tal watering, nor do they need chemical fertilizers and amendments, making them highly sustainable. “Grasses have an almost mystical ability to make any garden more interesting,” said Ms. Lumia. “Natural elements like fog, light and breezes seem to be captured by grasses in beautiful and subtle ways that you don’t often see with other plants.” Hutchins House OG is open to the public by appointment only from mid-May through mid-July. They can be reached at 207-641-9073, by email at Heidi@HutchinsHouseOG.com or through website www.hutchinshouseog. com.

strumental in her ethereal vocal style, her new producers were able to use her previously recorded vocal tracks to help make her dream come true. Carrigan is counting on support from a Kickstarter campaign to cover the costs of producing and promoting her album. Kickstarter “backers” will have the opportunity to be part of the new album’s success. Carrigan’s new album, ‘I Dreamed Last Night,’ transforms traditional Celtic music, adding a more modern flair. Her music evokes the production styles of artists like Grammywinning Lorde or Lana Del Ray and will appeal to fans across

music and art, and she continues to fight against long-term health challenges daily. Today, her paintings and music are different than they used to be, reflecting her new perspective,” explained her husband, Steve Carrigan. “While all artists evolve based on their personal journeys, Elizabeth’s transformation as a musician and artist is especially poignant, as she continues to recover from her very serious health crisis, using art and music to express her emotions.” “Elizabeth never gave up and never lost hope. Even now, more than four years poststroke, she still has struggles

and some days are harder than others, health-wise. But she has remained brave and positive throughout the entire ordeal. Her positive attitude and will to live are pivotal in her ongoing recovery,” Steve added. “This new album celebrates her strong spirit and her commitment to conquer her health issues, and it will appeal to busy parents, stroke survivors, music lovers across all genres - as well as anyone who has worked to overcome adversity.” To join Carrigan’s Kickstarter campaign, visit www.kickstarter.com/projects/1460710679/idreamed-last-night-album.

I’ve been working on it for more than four years, and completing the CD has been a huge motivator in my ongoing recovery,” Carrigan explained. “I’ve seen that life can change in an instant. Jaya is timid at first but warms up quickly. She’s been living in a foster home where she gets along great with other the other dogs, both big and small. She is a regular at the dog park and has some new BFF’s. She will chase cats so if you have any in your home they need to be confident and not let her have the upper hand.

Jaya is very good with children as long as they don’t rush at her. She is used to being on her own, free to come and go so it is important that her new family has strict control over access to doors and that she is kept on a leash when outside until she understands that this is her new home and bonds with you. Once she does, she is happy to stick around. Florence Meet Florence, a 3-year old medium-haired cat. ~ Ask The Computer Lady ~

Dear Computer Lady, Is it OK to leave a DVD disk in the computer all the time or should it be removed? If not, what could possibly happen! Thank you for such a wonderful, informing and easy to understand site!•• • • ••• • • • • • • • Dear Audrey, It is fine to leave a DVD disk in the drive. The only thing that you might notice is that the disk will spin every time you turn your computer on, and it might take a little longer for the computer to start up, since it will check the contents of the disk for bootable files. I quite often leave disks in the optical drive. Sometimes on purpose, but more often, I just forget it is there. • •••• • ••• • • • • • • • • • Dear Computer Lady, Thank you for your great

Just click on “Start”, then, all programs and click on “Windows Update”. Click the link to check for updates, then install them. You should always install the secu-

format issue in Excel. For some unknown reason, when I enter a person’s email address in a cell, Excel automatically formats the entry with a “Mailto” format or tag. So when I click on the cell, my email client opens up with a blank email message. How do I change this to a plain vanilla data entry? •• •• • • • • Dear Jack, Don’t you love it when a

computer program tries to make your life “easier” by guessing what you want to do? Seriously, it is only a program so it is not guessing anything, but it has been programmed to do certain things when we enter certain types of data in a cell. What you need to do is tell Excel that you don’t want your email addresses to turn into an active link. Here is how to do that. First, open your spreadsheet. Right-click on the cell with the email address on it. Click on “Remove Hyperlink” in the context menu that appears. I used Excel 2010 to write these directions because I don’t have version 2003 installed on my computer. If your version isn’t exactly like this one, you should be able to find the setting with a little bit of exploring. For those of you using LibreOffice Calc, you would right-click and then click on “Clear Direct Format-

Thanks, •• •• • • • • Dear Jack, You need three things in order to make copies of your DVD. You need a DVD burner on your laptop (most computers include this). You need blank DVDs, make sure you have the right size for your project. DVD-R disks come in single layer (4GB) and dual layer (8GB). You need the right software. I use Roxio Creator NXT for creating and copying optical disks. Once you have everything you need, you simply open Roxio, click the “Copy Disk” icon, then choose your source (the original disk) and where you want to copy it to. You can use the same drive to copy from and to, the program will prompt you to remove your source disk and insert the blank disk. • •••• • ••• • • • • • • • • • Interested in learning more?
